EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
RYAN LIVERGOOD
Our Library, Reimagined
About 15 months ago, we thought we knew our library and
our community pretty well. Then we took a hard look through
fresh eyes and discovered we could do even better. The
changes you are seeing at Warren-Newport Public Library,
from café seating near the entrance to new privacy booths, are
all part of a story that began with one simple question: How
can we serve you better?
The first chapter starts back in May 2024, when we worked
with an independent consultant that spent a few days in our library observing how the
community interacted with our space and asking WNPL staff questions about what we
observe every day. What we learned shaped our next steps.
The second chapter began in the summer of 2024. We made some immediate changes to
the library, such as removing the teen collection from The Vault to make more space for
teens and creating a new café area at the front of the library.
As we saw positive outcomes from the changes we made, the third chapter led the Board
to formally hire an architect to help us create a facilities improvement plan. A lot of hard
work by staff and the Board is leading us to the first major transformation of the library
you will begin to see starting in August.
In the current chapter of our story, the changes you will see when you visit the library
this August include new service desks positioned where you need help the most and new
shelving optimized for easier browsing and discovery of library materials.
There are several more chapters of this story yet to be written. Looking ahead several
months, our youth areas will be completely renovated, and the space used by teens
and adults will be enhanced as well. The exciting changes we have planned will create
wonderful interactive and engaging spaces for youth, a variety of seating options (from
quiet study seating to collaborative spaces), and easier browsing as collections will be
organized for discovery.
We will be rolling out changes gradually to minimize disruptions, and we would love
your feedback as we go. If the library hasn’t been part of your story for a while, now is a
great time to explore all that WNPL offers, from our Library of Things to The Workshop
makerspace. Or sign up for a digital library card to access ebooks, audiobooks, online
learning, and more.
No matter how your story unfolds, we are proud to be part of it and excited for what
is next.

Thanks to generous gifts from 2024 Annual Fund donors, the library
recently added Pillar booths to our study and meeting room availability.
Already very popular, the Library is grateful for the opportunity to offer
these new spaces for study, virtual calls and meetings, or a place to rest
and reset. For more information, visit www.wnpl.info/study-meetingrooms/.
