Beyond the Summit
(2025)

PROGRAM NOTES
In southwest Pennsylvania, the Laurel Highlands are nothing short of nature’s beauty. Centering on Laurel Hill and Chestnut Ridge of
the Allegheny Mountains, the Laurel Highlands are made up of Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland Counties, and are home to
many historical parks and sites such as Fort Necessity, the Flight 93 National Memorial, and Fort Ligonier, and architecture such as
Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous “Fallingwater.” Being a popular area for many outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting, running /
cycling / mountain biking (the Great Allegheny Passage or “GAP” Trail runs through the Laurel Highlands all the way to Cumberland,
MD) among others, the Laurel Highlands draws many local and out of state visitors throughout the entirety of the year. As the
seasons progress from summer to fall, and as we get to the end of September and October, the change in color of the foliage is
absolutely breathtaking. It’s worth a Sunday drive (or any day of the week drive) to see the change in color before the leaves fall.
Beyond the Summit was commissioned by the directors of the FayWest Honors Band Festival in celebration of the 20th year of the
festival. This festival began in spring 2005 as a way to provide another festival for the students of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. I
have listed the participating schools and their directors below, but what makes the FayWest Honors Band Festival unique is that we
as the directors serve as the guest conductors for the festival, giving the ensemble an opportunity to learn from 6 - 7 teachers for the
one-day festival. Additionally, in the beginning stages of the festival, us directors would perform with the group as well, serving as a
little side-by-side with the students. The festival has grown exponentially over the past 20 years and many of our students have
commented on how it’s their favorite festival each year.
This piece was written as a celebratory piece, starting off as adventuresome as if one was seeking the peak of the summit (pun
intended ). While it’s written in ¾, it’s better felt “in 1” when conducting / performing. As the piece slows to the middle section at m.
101, my goal was to put into music my experiences at a location in the Laurel Highlands called the Jumonville Cross. To sit at this
location with one’s thoughts, while looking out over the mountain, was truly powerful for me. It’s easy to just sit there for an hour and
truly appreciate the serenity that comes from being there. As the piece continues, the main theme returns, ending as if one achieved
their goal of reaching the mountaintop.
I am beyond grateful to all of the directors of the FayWest Honors Band for giving me the honor to compose this piece for our 20th
year of the festival. These directors are more than colleagues…they are friends, and I am grateful for each and every one of them.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
- Pedaling in chimes and vibraphone should be done generously so as to not create a “cloudy” or “blurred” sound. It is not
always marked in the score or part, so please use your best judgment with what sounds best to your ear.
- Divisi parts are marked in both the score and parts when necessary.
- This piece is meant to be celebratory, adventuresome and reflective throughout. Whatever types of adventures you enjoy, I
hope that you are able to connect them to moments within this piece.
- I hope that this piece is enjoyable for you and your students!
BIOGRAPHY
Mark Surovchak (b. 1979) is a music educator and freelance musician residing in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He received a bachelor of science degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and a master of music
degree in percussion performance from the University of North Texas in 2004.
As a performer, he has had the opportunity to perform and record with the Keystone Wind Ensemble (Dr. Jack Stamp, conductor) on
multiple occasions. Additionally, Mark has been part of the Pittsburgh Creators Project Board of Directors, a nonprofit organization in
the Pittsburgh region whose mission is to promote Pittsburgh artists of all concentrations. Since the summer of 2021, the Pittsburgh
Creators Project has hosted multiple summer reading sessions in order to provide young composers in the Pittsburgh region full
recordings of their music.
Mark has been an instrumental music teacher in the Belle Vernon Area School District in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania since 2004,
where his position currently includes teaching instrumental music performance to students in grades 7 - 12. As a creator and
composer, much of the writing that he has done has reflected his experiences in public school music education, with a few pieces
written specifically for his students. Performances of his music have ranged from elementary, middle and high schools to the
university and professional level.
Outside of music, Mark is an avid cyclist and loves exploring western Pennsylvania and east coast trails on two wheels.
