NATURAL & ORGANIC PRODUCTS EXPO 2024 REVIEW
Natural & Organic Products
EXPO 2024 review
he Natural & Organic Products Expo

T is the leading industry show for sustainable,

across the whole sector.
NOPEX 2024 was co-located with the Natural Beauty

15th April at the ExCeL in London. This year’s spring
show welcomed a record 7,305 visitors over the two
days, with over 600 exhibitors showcasing over 500

The extensive range of products exhibited included:

Hello Wellness isn’t just about products; it’s
about embracing a lifestyle rooted in natural
goodness. Our supplement range offers
simple remedies for everyday health hurdles,

By prioritising strains
that are native to
the land we live on,
Bristol Fungarium are
single-handedly avoiding the spread
of billions of spores from commercial
mushroom strains that have been selected
specifically for their ability to grow fast
and fruit heavily, and will therefore easily
outcompete our native mushroom strains
– with potentially damaging results to
local biodiversity. Utilising native fungi
also paves the way for a closer connection
to the medicine of this land, which they
honour by making the strongest tincture

This was recently confirmed by the

Diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

of sustainable practices. Reducing energy
consumption in production processes can be
achieved through investments in energy-efficient
machinery, the utilisation of renewable energy
sources, and the improvement of operational
efficiencies. Heritage Cider, for example, often
use traditional methods that require less energy
compared to industrial-scale production. By doing
so, they not only reduce their energy footprint but
also preserve the traditions of the past.
this can be difficult due to fragmented supply
chains and lack of standardisation. Additionally,
consumer behaviour plays a significant role in
driving sustainability. While there is a growing
trend towards environmentally conscious
consumption, many consumers are still influenced
by price and convenience. Educating consumers
about the benefits of sustainable products and
encouraging behavioural change is essential but
challenging.
In the food and drink industry, sustainable
practices encompass a broad range of strategies
aimed at reducing environmental impact,
conserving resources, and promoting social
responsibility. A key area of focus is sustainable
sourcing, which ensures that ingredients are
obtained in an environmentally friendly manner
that also supports local communities.
PEPPADEW ® , renowned for its sweet piquanté
peppers, exemplifies this approach. The company
sources its produce from local farmers, supporting
local economies. Additionally, PEPPADEW ® invests
in new technologies, such as hydroponics, to
grow peppers in a dynamic shift from traditional
cultivating methods. This innovative method aims
to provide a more sustainable way of cultivating
crops while maintaining their signature great taste.
By working closely with local communities and
fostering partnerships, PEPPADEW ® aspires to
be a forward-thinking innovator, committed to a
sustainable business model.
Another critical aspect of sustainability in
this sector is waste reduction. Food waste is a
significant issue, contributing to greenhouse gas
emissions and resource wastage. Companies
are implementing various strategies to minimise
waste, such as improving inventory management,
donating surplus food to charities, and utilising
food by-products. Parkside Flexible, a flexible
packaging company, has made strides in this area
by developing packaging solutions that extend the
Packaging innovation is another area where
significant progress is being made. Packaging
plays a crucial role in the food and drink
industry, and sustainable packaging solutions
are essential for reducing plastic waste and
pollution. Companies are increasingly adopting
biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable packaging
materials. Proampac’s development of flexible
packaging that is both recyclable and made from
renewable resources offers an environmentally
friendly alternative to conventional packaging,
demonstrating the industry’s commitment to
sustainability.
Despite the progress being made, several
challenges hinder the widespread adoption
of sustainable practices in the food and drink
industry. Financial constraints are a significant
barrier, especially for small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs). Implementing sustainable
practices often requires substantial investment,
and without adequate financial support or
incentives, the transition can be prohibitive.
Navigating the regulatory landscape can also be
challenging. The UK government has introduced
several legislations to promote sustainability, such
as the Plastic Packaging Tax, which incentivises
the use of recycled plastic in packaging. However,
staying compliant with these regulations
requires continuous adaptation and can be
resource-intensive.
Supply chain complexities further complicate
sustainability efforts. Ensuring sustainability
across the entire supply chain involves multiple
Adopting sustainable practices offers numerous
benefits, including environmental preservation,
cost savings, improved brand reputation, and
compliance with regulations. The primary
benefit of sustainability is the positive impact
on the environment. Sustainable practices help
conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas
emissions, and minimise pollution, which is crucial
for mitigating climate change and preserving
ecosystems for future generations.
In the long run, sustainable practices can lead
to significant cost savings. Energy-efficient
technologies, waste reduction strategies, and
sustainable sourcing can lower operational
costs and improve profitability. No More Lids
innovative packaging solutions not only reduce
waste but also enhance product efficiency, leading
to cost savings for both manufacturers and
consumers.
Companies that prioritise sustainability can
enhance their brand reputation and appeal to
environmentally conscious consumers. Transparent
communication about sustainability efforts builds
trust and loyalty, differentiating brands in a
competitive market. PEPPADEW’s ® commitment
to sustainable sourcing and supporting local
farmers has strengthened its brand image and
attracted a loyal customer base.
Adhering to sustainability regulations ensures
compliance and reduces the risk of penalties
and legal issues. Staying ahead of regulatory
trends can also provide a competitive advantage,
as companies are better prepared for future

legislative changes. The UK’s Plastic Packaging Tax,
for instance, encourages companies to innovate and
adopt sustainable packaging solutions, positioning
them favourably in the market.
As a leader in flexible packaging, Proampac
has made significant strides in sustainable
packaging solutions. The company’s emphasis on
recyclable and renewable materials demonstrates
its commitment to reducing plastic waste and
promoting a circular economy. Proampac’s
innovations, such as high-barrier packaging
that extends shelf life, contribute to waste
reduction and offer practical benefits to
consumers and manufacturers alike.
The company’s holistic approach to
sustainability encompasses not only
environmental impact but also
social responsibility, ensuring fair
labour practices and community
engagement.
The food and drink industry
is at a pivotal moment where
sustainability is not just a
choice but a necessity. The
interconnectedness of sustainable
practices, from sourcing to
packaging, highlights the need
for a comprehensive approach to
address environmental, social, and
economic challenges. While there
are significant obstacles, the benefits
of adopting sustainable practices are
substantial, ranging from environmental
preservation and cost savings to
improved brand reputation and regulatory
compliance.
Companies like Christeyns, National Flexible, and
Heritage Cider producers exemplify how sustainable
practices can be successfully integrated into business
models, offering valuable lessons for the industry.
As consumer awareness and regulatory pressures
continue to grow, the shift towards sustainability
will undoubtedly become more pronounced, driving
innovation and fostering a more sustainable future
for the food and drink industry. By embracing
sustainability, the industry can contribute to global
efforts to combat climate change, conserve resources,
and promote social equity, ensuring a healthier planet
for generations to come.

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
Sustainable wrapping
for the food industry
A
dopting sustainable wrapping solutions
can significantly reduce the environmental
footprint of the food industry, whilst
promoting a more sustainable future.
In recent years, we’ve seen a gradual shift towards
environmental best practices within the food
industry. There’s been a notable increase in the
adoption of sustainable wrapping solutions, driven
by a growing consumer demand for eco-friendly
products and a heightened focus on minimising
environmental impact.
For over 25 years, Prowrap has been a leading
manufacturer of cling film, aluminium foil, baking
papers, and dispensers. Its product lineup includes
the award-winning, fully recyclable, PVC-free
Ecocling, along with its renowned range of consumer,
own brand, and professional cling films. Each
product is crafted to meet the needs of professional
caterers, extend food shelf life, and reduce waste.
Prowrap envision a future without food waste, a
major contributor to climate change. The company
also foresee advancements in recycling infrastructure
that will efficiently handle more flexible plastic films,
minimising the impact of packaging waste.
Prowrap aims to revolutionise wrapping through its
six sustainability ingredients and core principles that
guide its daily operations: manufacturing products
manufacturing practices, including the Foodservice
Packaging Association (FPA), Sedex, Business in the
Community, and Alupro.
Every Prowrap product is responsibly sourced or
manufactured in the UK. The company develops new
products as sustainably as possible, collaborating with
key stakeholders in the foodservice sector to create
new initiatives that benefit everyone in the industry.
Sustainable materials used
Prowrap takes a holistic view that considers all
aspects of a product’s life cycle. For example, its
Infinity Foil can be recycled again and again, while
its Ecocling films are suitable for recycling without
compromising on stretchability, cutting capability, and
durability. Their parchments are 100% biodegradable
and compostable, ensuring that most of their products
are designed to have a second life after use.
This approach is fundamental to every design
decision Prowrap makes regarding its products.
For example, their Speedwrap Pro Dispensers now
feature Biocote antimicrobial technology, which
enhances dispenser protection by inhibiting the
growth of harmful microbes. This innovation allows
kitchens to use more eco-friendly cleaning products
while achieving the same high level of hygiene.
Ecocling is the newest addition to the Prowrap range.
It is a fully recyclable PVC-free cling film that is
available in widths of 300mm and 450mm to fit both
sizes of the Speedwrap Pro dispenser. It is designed
to balance recyclability and functionality, offering
the high levels of durability and stretchiness that
customers expect from professional-quality cling film.
The future must be sustainable
Prowrap understand and believe that using sustainable
products in professional kitchens is vitally important
to change. A spokesperson from Prowrap commented,
“Both food waste and packaging waste are two major
environmental issues, and kitchen operators are in the
rare position of being able to influence both. In five
years, kitchens will have a better handle on recycling
challenges, driven by evolving consumer preferences
and changing legislation, such as the anticipated
simple recycling regulations.”
“One example where we helped a customer on their
sustainability journey was when we designed our latest
innovation, the Speedwrap Pro. Its compatible refills
fit directly into the dispenser without needing a plastic
adapter, significantly reducing plastic waste. Additionally,
the dispenser incorporates Biocote antimicrobial
technology, minimising the need for cleaning
chemicals to maintain hygiene. By cutting precise
lengths of film, foil, or parchment, the Speedwrap
Pro also helps reduce wrapping material waste.”
Paving the way
Prowrap is continually evolving and introducing new
measures in collaboration with its customers to help
reduce the overall environmental impact. One of
these measures is a new dispenser recycling initiative.
Prowrap will look to work with its customers to
collect old, unwanted dispensers, and in conjunction
with its UK injection moulding partner, Prowrap will
recycle as much of the dispenser as possible to reuse
across the Prowrap dispenser range.
in the UK to minimise carbon footprint, using
recycle-ready films and foils, offering biodegradable
and compostable parchment, investing in a greener
future, reducing plastic usage and wrapping waste,
and tackling food waste.
Sustainable investment
Prowrap continually reinvests in all levels of its
business to benchmark better ways of working. The
company is also a proud member of several industry
organisations that promote responsible sourcing and
Ecocling is suitable for covering and wrapping all
types of food and is microwave and freezer-safe. It
also fits seamlessly into the dispenser without the
need for a plastic insert in the roll, reducing the
amount of plastic used in the dispenser design.
Furthermore, Prowrap has recently announced its
support for the Burnt Chef Project, a tremendous
non-profit organisation focused on providing mental
health training and support to hospitality workers.
A Prowrap spokesperson said, “Being a partner to
our customers means more than simply providing
products – we are seeking to drive the industry
through creative, sustainable and innovative
solutions to enable the foodservice sector to
become productive, profitable and efficient.”
In addition to actively participating in culinary trade
shows, Prowrap is committed to making a positive
impact in its Bristol community. As members of
the Business in the Community scheme, Prowrap
acknowledges its environmental responsibility
and strives to create a brighter future for all.

EPPADEW ® is the UK’s
No.1 pepper brand*,
known globally for
its Sweet Piquanté Peppers
and multi-award-winning
PEPPADEW ® Bites. Winning
silver at the 2023 Casual
Dining Innovation Challenge
and more recently, the Quality
Food Award in the Foodservice
Party Food and Buffet
category, PEPPADEW ® Bites
are a game-changer in the
premium snack sector.
In this issue of Food & Drink
Matters, we are looking at the
timely topic of sustainability
across the sector, not shying
away from the challenges
faced by businesses but also
celebrating the triumphs, large
and small. PEPPADEW ® is
one of those companies that
is already reaching significant
milestones on its journey
towards carbon-negative
status. With its peppers in
brine now only packaged in
100% recyclable glass, there
is no single-use plastic on-site.
Furthermore, the plastic inserts
to keep the peppers in brine
are a fully recyclable product,
mirroring the circular economy
philosophies.
“We have reduced the tray that our jars fit into on
average by 23%, with the tray board fully FSC certified
and reduced our shrink-wrap from 80 to 40 micron. We
have successfully removed single use plastic by changing
to pop caps and are delighted to report that we planted
40 water-wise shrubs (Spekbome) on our PEPPADEW ®
site and Andzisane trees in 2020.”
“Working with the British Carbon Neutral Trust more
recently has strategically enabled us to reduce our
carbon footprint,” explained Simon Harris, Brand
and Marketing Manager.
Carbon-neutral status
The British Carbon Neutral Trust is the UK’s leading carbon
offsetting initiative and empowered PEPPADEW ® UK to
reduce carbon emissions through a series of meticulous
assessments to ascertain an accurate carbon footprint.
A key component to reducing carbon emissions was
strategic investment in carbon offset projects through the
Trust including reforestation projects, methane capture
initiatives, and investments in renewable energy projects.
“We worked with Carbon Neutral Britain to ensure
that these projects were not only in the UK, but in
Africa too. Now that we have offset our carbon
footprint, as a UK team we have defined targets to
reduce the amount of carbon emitted.”
“We are continuing to monitor our carbon emissions
and moving to continuous improvement to lower our
carbon footprint.”
Beyond ESG: Hydroponic Projects in South Africa
Whilst monitoring company carbon emissions at the
UK head office in Leatherhead and factory in Weston
Super Mare, PEPPADEW ® is mindful of supporting
sustainable farming and community livelihoods in the
Limpopo province of South Africa.
Having supported rural water projects for over a decade,
PEPPADEW ® had been striving to support goal 6 of the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (ensure
availability and sustainable development of water and
sanitation for all). The award-winning company is going
further now and branching out into Hydroponics: to
control the amount of water and nutrients that each
plant receives. This reduces the amount of water used
and prevents any unwanted waste.
This method of cultivation is particularly suited to
growing peppers and has numerous cited sustainable
benefits: Conserving water, preventing land
degradation and furthermore produces quick growth,
a higher yield compared to soil-grown peppers with
more seasonal predictability.
“For five years, we have been testing and using
Hydroponics to grow Piquanté peppers across two
hectares. To reduce water and the amount of fertiliser
used, a nutrient solution is dripped onto the base
of each plant, providing consistent hydration and
nutrients.”
“Nutrient Management is used to regularly check
the nutrient solution's concentration and maintain
appropriate levels for pepper growth. Pest and Disease
Management is used to monitor plants regularly
for pests like aphids and spider mites. For disease
prevention we ensure proper spacing, good airflow,
and clean equipment to prevent fungal and bacterial
diseases.”

té peppers
“Hydroponics uses less water than traditional soil-based agriculture, making it more
sustainable, which is aligned to goal 6 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”
“In South Africa, we’re happy to report that we’ve reduced the site’s energy
consumption and, consequently carbon footprint by 5%.”
The beauty of ‘odd shaped’ peppers and seeds
A staggering 40% of a crop of vegetables can be thrown away in the UK because
it does not meet the ‘supermarket beauty standard.’ There has been a consumer
backlash against this wasteful aesthetic, with more shoppers happy to buy ‘wonky’
fruit and veg.
PEPPADEW ® intuitively understands this and de-cores each pepper by hand,
keeping the seeds to be re-harvested the following year, following stringent testing.
“We sample test each seed, for germination rate, disease resistance, and genetic
consistency. These samples are germinated under controlled conditions to measure
the percentage that successfully sprout, ensuring the batch meets the required
germination rate standards.”
“We test the seeds for common pathogens that could affect crop health, such as
fungi, bacteria, or viruses. This ensures that the seeds are free from contamination
and reduces the risk of disease outbreaks in the crop. Only then are these seasons’
seeds ready to go into the Nurseries ready for next year.”
Moving towards the vision of carbon-negative
Having successfully achieved carbon-neutral status through the British Carbon
Neutral Trust, PEPPADEW ® now has its long-term vision set on moving towards
carbon-negative.
PEPPADEW ® will be at the Casual Dining Casual Dining Show 2024
and European Pizza & Pasta Show 2024.

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
The Good Cup ® : Turning th
PLA-lined beverage cups
I
n 2030, there will be more single use plastics in
our oceans than fish, according to UNESCO.
This sobering statistic highlights the pressing
need for action and the UK Government has started
to respond with timely legislation.
There is where The Good Cup ® comes in.
Introducing The Good Cup ® – time for change
The Cornish coastline conjures up images of sun
kissed surfers, sandy beaches and picturesque rugged
coastlines but under the idyllic surface, lies an ugly
plastic underbelly. Every year, 10 million tons of
plastic are dumped in these shores catastrophically
impacting marine life. No More Lids’ Managing
Director, Chris Brown has seen first-hand the plastic
debris washed up on the golden sandy beaches,
blighting the sea views.
For years Chris had been looking for an alternative
to the destructive plastic cycle lids and greenwashed
PLA lined cups as he explains, “No More lids have
a simple mission and it’s right there in our name:
we want to say No More Lids for the hospitality
industry and beyond. We want to see the end of
separate lids including plastic or bagasse paper
lids and an end to plastic or PLA lined cups, which
are difficult and cost prohibitive to be recycled or
composted with over 97% ending up in landfill,
taking over 200 years to decompose. We have now
found the answer: we are proud to be the UK home
of The Good Cup.”
From US Celebrity endorsement to cup
revolution
The actress-turned chat show legend Drew
Barrymore famously featured The Good Cup on
her daytime show last year, praising its foldable
ingenuity. The design has already launched in the UK,
Canada and Japan and is being
trialled in Australia, with a launch
date expected soon in the USA.
No More Lids was created when
Chris discovered The Good Cupinvented
by Cyril Drouet, an
established packaging designer.
“The Good Cup is a cuttingedge
design: the truly unique
hot and cold drinks cup is both
fully compostable, at home and
industrially and is fully recyclable
as paper with no specialist
treatment or collection required.
Even if the cup ends up in landfill
by chance or accident, it will
disintegrate without a trace and
have zero negative impact on the
planet within three to six months.
The unique thing about the cup
is it has an integrated folding lid,
so we can make lids a thing of the
past. It is so much more than a
cup and is suitable for food use too!”
Here in the UK alone we use over 14 million single
use cups per day - with the vast majority of them
ending up in landfill or plaguing our coastlines.
“We aim to introduce the Good Cup to the UK
hospitality industry. It is all very well people pointing
out the issue but real sustainable change only occurs
when a viable and accessible solution can be offered.”
Spotlight on The Good Cup
The Good Cup is made from FSC paper board and
uses a natural water-based lining called Aqueous –
this simply means that it can be
fully recycled up to seven times
and still be classed as paper,
which is the maximum recycling
process possible.
There is a lot of current industry
focus on emissions from freight
transportation and the good
news is that The Good Cup takes
up 40% less packing space than
standard cups and lids. This is
due to its ingenious foldable
design and when transported by
sea freight, it still has less carbon
footprint than cups created here
in the UK.
The Good Cup is packed in cases
of 1,000 cups, which means that
it fits nicely into one box only,
reducing shipping costs, which
is welcome good news during
the cost-of-living crisis. The cup
uses 35% less energy to produce,
making this the most sustainable coffee cup on the
market.
For those independent coffee shops short on counter
or storage space, the flat-packed, foldable designs
take up minimal space, making busy workplaces
with hot drinks safer too.
“The Good Cup is accessible on bulk price and is
a real option for all businesses looking to save on
money, space and the planet. The cup can be fully
branded allowing people to take ownership and
to shout loud and proud that they have made a
positive change for the planet.”

e tide on plastic lids and
“We haven’t reinvented the cup and how people
drink, we have simply improved the drinking
experience and done it in a way that can make
a huge positive impact to our planet!”
Watershed moment for the hospitality
industry
Making the transition to using The Good Cup
instead of a cup and lid is a small change, with a
monumental impact. It is an easy switch to make
and for smaller businesses who can’t afford to install
renewable energy just yet, this is a huge step in the
right direction and signals to customers that your
business is taking sustainability seriously.
No More Lids has already established a network
of 25 resellers across the hospitality and packing
industry, which is growing by the day including
brand giants like AFL, Alliance, Catering24, and
Swift Catering.
“One example close to home is Adrenalin Quarry
in Cornwall. They have been working to become a
plastic free destination for the past few years and
made the switch from plastic lined cups and black
plastic lids to The Good Cup, which was fully
branded using their distinctive and vibrant Black
and Yellow. They have removed 432kg of single
use plastic from Cornwall, based on the plastic
lid and plastic lining of their previous cups and in
addition, saved 1cbm in storage space. It’s good
news for sustainability too as they reduced their
carbon footprint on delivery of the cups by 46%
as we delivered 100 cases instead of the equivalent
300 cases (cups and lids). The Good Cup has now
given them the final piece in the puzzle and we are so
proud to have helped them complete that journey.”
Another local Cornish company: Kynance
Cove: The Lizard moved to The Good Cup for
all three sizes of cups and had a beautiful bespoke
branded cup created for their main size 12oz.
They ordered 120 cases of the Good Cup and have
successfully removed 560kg of single use plastic
from Cornwall, based on the plastic lid and PLA
lining of their previous cups. The company also
benefitted from saving 1.2cbm in storage space and
reduced their carbon footprint on delivery of the
cups by 51% as we delivered 120 cases instead of the
equivalent 360 cases (cups and lids). By switching
to The Good Cup, they removed 120,000PLA lined
cups and plastic lids.”
The future of The Good Cup
No More Lids is buzzing with plans for the future
and is already working on variations of the current
cup and have designed food container and 3D spout
versions of the cup – opening up possibilities for
other uses.
“We are in talks with numerous national and
international brands and our goal is to help people
make the switch and to reduce the huge volume of
non-processable waste more and more. Every one
million cups we switch will reduce the single use
plastic waste by over 4 tonnes.”

make informed and sustainable packaging decisions.
At the heart of ProAmpac’s journey towards a
more sustainable tomorrow is our annual IMPACT
report, which serves as a central document for
communicating our strategy and progress.
Futureproofing food packaging recycling habits
The global food sector is heavily dependent on
packaging for optimised food safety in preparation,
extended retail shelf life, and aesthetically pleasing
packaging, which is important for consumer
marketing.
The challenge in the food sector is viable end-life
recycling, namely, disposal points that allow for
packaging to be returned for correct industrial recycling.
“The industry is hyper-conscious of the potential
for Food-to-Go packaging to become discarded
waste, and so over the next five years in the UK, we
anticipate there will be an increase in reward-return
schemes to incentivise the return of packaging to a
viable return system.”
“We are also going to see a rise in hot Food-to-
Go and in particular, cook in packs. This will
enable the food to be
prepared, then frozen
or chilled and then
only cooked as needed
by the customer.
This will once again
reduce food waste and
increase food safety.”
“The challenge will
be ensuring the
packaging and product
can work together to
give a quality cook,
alongside compostable
packaging solutions.”
said Kevin Vyse.
ProAmpac success
stories
“When we worked
with PRET a while
back, we introduced
a range of packaging
to eliminate up to
80% of the plastic used in similar Food-to-Go
solutions. Since then, we have gone on to create
long-life solutions that range from three to twentyeight
days. We have also introduced a range of
paper-only pouches and flow wrap solutions for
customers where plastic laminate has been replaced
with recyclable paper. We are working to introduce
this scheme across the fruit and vegetable markets.”
Kevin Vyse added.
Looking to the future
ProAmpac is currently working on the publication
of its third annual IMPACT report, detailing our
renewed strategic focus on a core set of United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in
addition to plans for setting GHG reduction
targets in alignment with the criteria outlined by
the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI).
“Our mission is to be informed and ready to
respond to consumer demands that come via
brands and retailers. A great piece of packaging
should be intuitive and obvious, should conform
to the market and environmental need, and use
the least possible material for the best possible
protection.”
“This is made possible through our firm
commitment to innovation and ongoing science-led
development of more sustainable packaging. This
is enhanced by the Collaboration & Innovation
Centre in Rochester, NY, where customers are
encouraged to join in with the innovation process
and to work with our teams using state-of-theart
testing equipment as well as having access to
production machines that mirror customers’ own
capabilities.” said Kevin Vyse.

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
Creating packaging
for tomorrow...today
Throughout this Food & Drink Matters issue, we have shone a light on
sustainability across the sector, highlighting challenges, solutions and innovations
E
stablished over seventy years ago, award-winning
Parkside is a pioneering packaging solutions
provider specialising in compostable, recyclable,
paper-based and innovative plastic flexible packaging
solutions for the food, personal & household care
and tobacco sectors. The company is a truly global
supplier with manufacturing sites in the UK & Asia
and is headquartered in Normanton, West Yorkshire.
With a focus on the UK Government’s 2050 New
Zero Targets and the United Nation’s Sustainable
Development Goals accelerating across the country,
it is the turn of Parkside to showcase how its ESG
policies align with wider green thinking.
United Nations & SME Climate Hub:
Concerted push for global sustainability
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted
by all United Member States in 2015 as a pledge for
greater sustainability today and for future generations.
It is hoped that these goals will be reached by 2030
and include gender equality, ending world hunger, and
tackling climate change head-on, whilst encouraging
economic, sustainable growth.
Parkside, like many like-minded businesses, has
aligned its company’s daily ESG operations and
holistic growth to the 17 SD goals through initiatives
like the non-profit SME Climate Hub.
The SME Climate Hub works across the globe
propelling small and medium sized businesses to take
definitive climate action. The Hub is a joint enterprise
between the We Mean Business coalition, Exponential
Roadmap Initiative, United Nations Race to Zero
campaign, with Normative and the Net Zero
Team at Oxford University.
“To ensure we meet the SME Climate Hub
commitments, we have set several aims. One of the
most important is our commitment to reducing our
greenhouse gas emissions and overall carbon footprint.
We use carbon footprint tracking and reporting
software as part of our Climate Hub commitment.”
“We have also sourced a zero to landfill waste
management company to ensure every aspect of our
business is aligned with the circular economy,” explains
Julia O'Loughlin, Parkside Group Marketing Manager.
Sustainability accreditations:
Responsible sourcing
Parkside is committed to sustainable sourcing and
working closely with suppliers to take a holistic
view of the end-to-end supply chain. This includes
important accreditations from the triple experts:
FSC, PEFC, and ISCC.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is
one of the most sought-after global environmental
accreditations in the packaging sector. The FSC
certifies that all paper and wood supplied to the UK
and other countries are sourced from a healthy forest
that hasn’t been harmed through felling and that
wildlife is protected (the number of trees cut down
doesn’t surpass the ability of the forest to reproduce,
therefore maintaining a CO 2
neutral forest).
The FSC logo therefore ensures that the products
come from the responsible management of the world’s
20
FDM is sponsored by – see them on pages 40-41
forests and is an instantly recognisable stamp of
approval for consumers in the packaging industry.
The Programme for the Endorsement of
Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international
standard working as an independent monitoring body
and currently covers 260 million hectares of forests. It
enhances the FSC certification further with sustainable
forestry management, with further adaption for
smaller-scale land usage.
Lastly, the International Sustainability and
Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an independent
initiative tasked to certify sustainable, climatefriendly
supply chains, which are fully traceable and
deforestation-free. The ISCC Certification covers
agricultural biomass, biogenic waste, recycled
carbon-based materials and non-biological
renewable materials.
Sustainable 7 strategy
Some packaging companies would gain sustainability
accreditations and stop there but Parkside has
gone the extra mile through the development of its
company strategy. Launched in 2023, the ‘Sustainable
7’ strategy represents the seven pillars that underpin
all of Parkside’s packaging projects:
● Reduce
● Remove
● Recycle
● Renewable
● Waste Reduction
● Reuse
●
Carbon Footprint.
The 7 pillars mirror the company’s expertise in
flexible packaging evolution; namely lightweight
and low carbon footprint designs, utilising recycled
content solutions as well as recyclable monopolymer
film, renewable paper and compostable materials.
The packaging substrates are enhanced with high
barrier performance for extended product shelf life
through the development of laminate structures and
the application of innovative barrier coatings. This
provides barrier protection against moisture, oxygen
and grease, making the packaging suitable for a wide
range of food and non-food applications.
“As a flexible packaging expert, our solutions are
generally lighter and more efficient to transport than
rigid packs, due to their use of more lightweight
materials combined with a reduction in the total
amount of material being used. This means less
empty air is shipped in each consignment and
more packs can be shipped in a single container.”
“We recently expanded our Recoflex range of,
recyclable paper-based packaging. The original
application for this material was an award-winning
freezer-proof paper pouch for seafood – the first fully
functional recyclable paper pack of its kind.”
“We’re working on long-term projects with a
number of household name brands to develop
materials suitable for large-scale product launches,”
elaborated Julia.
Spotlight on the award-winning
Recoflex range
The freezer-proof seafood paper pouch was designed
for supermarket giant: Iceland as part of their North
Coast range of frozen seafood. The innovative
design won the prestigious Stationers’ Company
Innovation Excellence Award in the Product
Design category. The winning design was made with
Recoflex paper materials, treated with a water-based
coating that acts as a moisture and grease barrier,
whilst also cleverly preventing ice crystals from
forming on the exterior pack. This is a game-changer
in the paper-based freezer-proof flexible packaging
sector, as Julia adds, “We recently launched a
metallised paper into the Recoflex range, which uses
an advanced aluminium deposition technique to create
a high barrier metallised flexible material that can still
be certified as recyclable. This complements the rest of
the range, which includes a flow wrap, a high-barrier
PET laminated paper, and a translucent option.
In defence of plastic
“Plastic is often seen as the villain of the story, when
quite often it is the most sustainable option when you
take a holistic view of the whole supply chain. For
one, it offers optimum barrier protection and helps to
reduce food waste, which has a much greater global
carbon footprint than packaging waste does. Plastic is
also a lightweight material, meaning it can help reduce
transport emissions in some applications.”
There are other timely challenges for the whole
packaging sector as Julia illuminates, “The cost of
materials, particularly rising costs stemming from
the lack of availability of recyclate for use in postconsumer
recycled content materials, is an issue for
everyone. The growing demand for recycled and
recyclable materials highlights the continued lack
of recycling infrastructure in the UK, which means
some categories of plastic that could in theory be
recycled still end up in landfill or incinerated. This is
particularly pertinent for flexible plastics, which are
commonplace throughout the industry but without
compatible recycling infrastructure to match. As a
result, many brands and retailers find themselves
unable to fulfil their ESG goals and pledges.”
Looking forward with next-level innovations
Parkside embraces new technology, as part of the
emerging Industry 5.0 sector to promote next-level
packaging solutions, such as the laser scribing and
scoring system ParkScribe.
“We can score peel-and-reclose flaps into lidding
film to create an integral opening mechanism. When
weld-sealed to a rigid tray of the same material – for
example, a PET film can be welded to a PET tray –
this enables the creation of trays and punnets that are
then deemed suitable for recycling as one unit under
current OPRL guidelines.”

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
From orchard to bottle
Sustainable cider production refers to the creation of
cider in a way that minimises environmental impact
and promotes long-term ecological balance
I
n a world where sustainability is emerging as a
cornerstone of long-term business success, the
economic advantages, social benefits, long-term
viability, and environmental protection are clear
examples of how sustainable practices not only ensure
business longevity but also preserve the planet for
future generations.
Taunton Cider has been part of cider making from the
beginning and boasts a long heritage and a passion
for all things cider. Over the years, Taunton Cider
has made significant efforts to integrate sustainability
into its operations, recognising the importance of
environmental stewardship in the cider-making
process, but the story doesn’t end there.
Heritage Cider is leading the charge in advocating
for reduced waste and increased use of recyclable
products across the cider industry. Its commitment
to sustainability sets a shining example for other
companies to follow. With initiatives aimed at making
cider production more eco-friendly, Heritage Cider is at
the forefront of driving positive change in the industry.
Introduction to Heritage Cider
The Taunton Cider brand has been a successful
household name since the 1980’s, with its illustrious
roots stretching back to the early 1800’s. It was
around the 1980’s that Taunton Cider was marked as
the second largest cider maker in the UK, following
Bulmers.
By 1991, a management buyout saw the brand
floated on the stock market and eventually bought
by Matthew Clark plc in 1995. In 1998, the famous
Norton Fitzwarren site had closed down and hundreds
of locals had lost their jobs. This was the perfect
opportunity, once the trademark had been let go,
to reform such an iconic brand!
In 2023, Heritage Cider acquired the brand, including
its orchards and recipes. This strategic move has led
to significant expansion, with the establishment of
a larger warehouse facility equipped for increased
pressing and storage capacities. As a result, more cider
enthusiasts can now enjoy the refreshing taste of coldpressed
cider any day of the week.
Heritage Cider’s commitment to sustainability
We had the opportunity to chat with Edward Down,
Production and Orchards Manager at Heritage Cider,
to gain insight into the company’s perspective on
sustainability and its implications for the cider
industry at large.
“For us, sustainability means actively reducing our
environmental impact and footprint. Our goal is to
minimise our emissions and waste, preserve resources
and ensure our operations have the least possible
impact on the planet.”
Food & Drink Matters is a keen advocate for
sustainable practices in the food and beverage industry,
22
FDM is sponsored by – see them on pages 40-41
therefore, we asked Edward
what specific challenges do
sustainability initiatives bring
to cider making.
“Sustainability presents unique
challenges for us at Heritage –
and we believe this is a common
challenge faced by other cider
producers as well. We grow,
harvest, press, and blend all of
our ciders in-house, however,
this process necessitates the
use of tractors, machinery, and
electrical appliances. To mitigate
our environmental impact,
we have implemented various
countermeasures in areas we
believe that we can be more
environmentally friendly.”
“For example, all our bottled
products are made from glass, and we use recyclable
cardboard trays and plastic wrapping. These measures
help minimise our environmental impact. Additionally,
our kegs are made of stainless steel, allowing for
unlimited reuse and eliminating waste. We also offer
a bag-in-box range that are stored and shipped in
recyclable cardboard boxes, further ensuring our
products are as eco-friendly as possible.”
Heritage Cider clearly recognises that sustainability
is an ongoing journey and therefore, will continually
look to invest in renewable energy sources to further
reduce its carbon footprint whilst innovating in
sustainable packaging practices.
The company’s support for sustainable orchard
management practices has also not gone unnoticed,
as it helps to preserve biodiversity and protect wildlife
habitats in its surrounding areas.
“At Heritage Cider, we manage and maintain 50 acres
of orchard land with around 5,500 apple trees with
each tree taking in around 25kg
of CO 2
per year which equates
to around 137,500kg per year!
Furthermore, all of our waste
yeast and cider excess is taken
away and put into an anaerobic
digester to create electricity
which goes back into the main
grid!” stated Edward.
Heritage Cider is proud to
engage with local farmers, as
sourcing locally grown apples
is a fantastic way to support
local agriculture and contribute
towards the rural economy.
This engagement fosters strong
community relationships and
promotes a wider sustainable
agricultural practice. Heritage
Cider use Somerset apples to
achieve an eco-friendly triple
whammy that includes the best fruit in the world
whilst supporting local farmers and lowering its
carbon footprint.
A statement taken from its website reads, “We do not
import foreign concentrate. Our cider supports the bio
diversity of the English countryside and the money we
spend stays in the local economy. We make our cider in
a traditional way; we do not force the fermentation or
hurry things along and we end up with an incredible
base cider from which our master cidermakers blend
our different styles.”
Heritage Cider products
Its multi-award-winning craft cider uses a heritage
of varieties that include English bittersweet and
bittersharp cider apples grown in orchards that
have supplied Taunton Cider for generations.
Its vast range of 500ml bottled ciders include a fantastic
blend of quality and tradition while incorporating
modern innovations such as 0% alcohol choices.
Available in single bottles, boxes of 12, or 20 Litre
Bag in a Box, there is a flavour for every palate in its
collection.
Recommended are the Taunton Row 34 Cider 5.3%,
Taunton Ultra Dry Cider 5.5%, Taunton Medium
Cider 4%, Taunton English Berry Cider 3.4%, Taunton
Vintage Cider 6%, Taunton Zero Cider 0%, and one
of its Best Sellers: Taunton Dry Cider 4%.
Heritage Cider also have a couple of mobile bars and
horseboxes which can be found at various events
around the year such as; Somerset County Show,
Somerset Cricket Cider Festival and more. What’s more,
when these bars are not being used at events, they are
available to rent for private events. “This gives our
customers the option of throwing the best and most well
catered events. You will have the option to have the bar
ran by our amazing team or you can do what is called
‘a dry rental’ where we just supply you the bar. You
can then hook up your own supply or purchase some
incredible Taunton Cider at a discounted rate!”
Choose from the Mobile Roller Bar – the perfect
option for venues without a bar as it can easily fit
through small doors. It is also ideal for small parties
and events as it takes up very little room. Or, The
Horsebox Bar – mainly used for large events. With a
range of extras, this bar has 4 taps and enables you to
have multiple drinks on draught and could give your
event or show the professional touch.
In closing, Heritage Cider has more than impressed
us with its local sourcing practices, energy-efficient
production, waste management strategies, and support
for the local community. These efforts demonstrate
how a historic cider producer can successfully integrate
sustainability into its operations, contributing to
environmental protection and long-term business
viability in today’s world.

SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
Christeyns Food Hygiene
UK wins Gold Medal for
Sustainability
hristeyns Food Hygiene UK has been
awarded the coveted EcoVadis Gold
CMedal for its steadfast commitment to
sustainability best practice. EcoVadis provides
a globally-recognised gold-seal of approval to
businesses demonstrating optimised sustainability
across set parameters. This Gold Medal
achievement for Christeyns displays an unwavering
dedication to environmental stewardship, labour
practices, ethical conduct, and sustainable
procurement, placing the company in the top
5% of companies recognised across the world.
“We are justifiably proud of our Ecovadis Gold
award, which we achieved on our first attempt,
as vindication of our long-term work to
improve our operations in a sustainable and
environmentally conscious manner,” outlined
Matthew Fancy, Technical Operations Manager
at Christeyns Food Hygiene.
Sustainability track record
The EcoVadis Gold Medal comes on the back of
the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
certification, which was achieved back in 2020.
Warrington-based CFH has been manufacturing
leading hygiene products for over thirty-five years
and alongside its partners supplies world-class
solutions for the safe cleaning and disinfection of
food and beverage plants and food retail businesses
across the country. The firm is wholeheartedly
committed to superlative standards in food safety
management systems, whilst role-modelling
sustainable business practices in the sector.
Christeyns Food Hygiene is part of Christeyns,
an international hygiene group with centralised
headquarters in Ghent, Belgium. The group has
signed up to the UN Global Compact – the world’s
largest sustainability initiative with Ten Principles
that help businesses act as a force for good. The
principles cover pertinent issues such as: human
rights, labour, anti-corruption and the environment
and asks its participants to mobilise for a more
inclusive and sustainable era.
In addition, CFH is also aligned with the
Responsible Care Global Charter with the
International Council of Chemical Associations,
an association of visionaries, innovators, solutions
providers and product stewardship pioneers.
The ICCA’s mission is to strengthen chemical
management systems, whilst simultaneously
safeguarding people and the environment.
Responsible sustainability in food safety
management systems
In line with the timely UN Sustainable
Development Goals, Christeyns Food Hygiene
fully embodies its stewardship role – the idea
24

that companies are entrusted to the care of the
planet through sensitive, responsible management.
With a long-term focus on locally-sourced raw
materials and minimised water and energy usage
for example, the firm has always strived to put
sustainability at the forefront of our operations.
With this in mind, the Project Terra Working Group
was formed in 2020 by a collective across head-office
and field-based teams to ensure that sustainability
was central to working practices. Sadly, greenwashing
has unfortunately become an axe to grind for many
companies and CFH is keen to show disparity between
merely ‘talking the talk’ and actively ‘walking the walk’
through routine staff briefings, social media campaigns
and tool-box talks – essentially making sustainable
thinking part of intrinsic work-based culture.
“We subscribe to the philosophy that this issue
is everyone’s responsibility and as such not the
purview of any one individual with sustainability
as one of their annual KPI’s.”
“To this end, we have adopted a multi-functional
approach which leads to widespread understanding
and adoption across our teams both in our
manufacturing operation and our field-based teams.”
“CFH UK, a part of the Christeyns group of
companies recently released our third corporate
social responsibility report and are on target for
our 1st CSRD Compliant management report in
2026 on 2025 activities.”
Shining a light on company practices
Reports show that 47% of UK power generation
now comes from renewable sources – in May 2023,
the country produced its trillionth kilowatt hour
of electricity generated from renewable sources.
We are well on our way towards meeting the UK
Government’s 2030 Net Zero Targets and many
companies are doing what they can to support this,
from SMEs to larger companies.
Christeyns has introduced solar technology across all
its UK production sites, alongside interior LED lighting.
The company only operates during weekdays, saving
energy production during the evenings and weekends
and has converted a significant proportion of its
transport fleet to hybrid or pure electric technology.
“In 2017, we deployed, a unique range of
soluble-sachet based chemistry to a customer with
over 2,500 food retail shops spread across the
UK which replaced the traditional water-based
chemistry we had previously supplied. This had
significant benefits in health & safety, storage and
distribution space as well as eliminating plastic
waste from cleaning & disinfection activities to the
tune of over 8.5 tonnes of waste per annum.”
“Our ‘Green R’ range of official ecologically
professional hygiene products is designed to reduce
impact on the environment without compromising
food safety standards and we constantly review our
traditional formulations to ensure we maximise
efficiency. We pioneered the development of superconcentrates
whereby a pre-mix is supplied to be
locally completed into a fully-built product at a
co-formulator closer to the customer’s site reducing
weight in transport and reducing CO 2
production.
In 2023, 12 % of the Christeyns Group total
production has an official certification for either
EU Ecolabel, Ecocert or Nordic Swan, cementing
our commitment to greener thinking.”
The simplicity of the circular economy
The ‘circular economy’ ideology hinges on
eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products
and materials at their highest value and regenerating
nature. Thankfully, it has now become entrenched in
our societal infrastructure and offers a muti-faceted
approach to the challenges of climate change,
biodiversity, waste and pollution and ultimately
protecting the earth’s finite resources.
“For CFH, maintaining a circular economy is
second nature. We have long utilised shared
distribution contractors to reach our customer’s
sites located in remote corners of the UK and
Ireland to make more efficient use of vehicular
movements to minimise CO 2
production.”
“On a more practical level, we have for our
entire history collected, re-claimed, cleaned and
reused a large proportion of our chemical product
containers once our customers have finished with
them for free. This allows us to both keep our
packing costs low and crucially eliminates the
contaminated plastic waste that would arise were
these to enter landfill.”
“With many of our customers we review their
ability to benefit from bulk storage containers
to reduce their reliance on plastic containers and
work with them to both install and remotely
monitor the need to refill allowing more efficient
planning of distribution fleet’s routes further
reducing CO 2
production.”
Facing challenges head-on
Christeyns Food Hygiene is transparent about
all aspects of the company, especially chemical
products which are constantly under review. With
cutting-edge research & development, CFH has the
advantage of mobilising production when greener
alternatives present themselves, “We are cognisant
that we are still making chemical products capable
of causing environmental damage. We do not shy
away from that, our products are a vital link in
the supply of safe food to the consumers, however
we are constantly reviewing our formulations
to ensure that where less damaging alternatives
become available our R&D teams quickly mobilise
to assess and implement them.”
“CFH works alongside suppliers to identify more
sustainable raw material alternatives as quickly
as possible and is currently working to implement
more capacity of bulk storage which reduces
customer’s reliance on multiple deliveries helping
reduce CO 2
production.”
Looking ahead to superlative
sustainability practices
With the advent of video conferencing platforms,
CFH alongside many other companies now has
the advantage of remote meeting options, which
removes the need to travel, with associated
carbon emissions. This is ideal for meeting with
European and international colleagues, making
it a convenient and sustainable method of
communication.
“We plan to reduce our reliance even further on fossil
fuel through additional solar technology and hybrid
vehicles, in addition to remote meeting options.”
“Our milestones will namely be the actions we
undertake – the more efficient use of products by
customers, the growth in our electric and hybrid
fleet, our net-zero production of waste and our
adoption of new and sustainable raw materials
as they become commercially available.”

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING MATTERS
Savour the flavour with Belazu’s
premium hand-roasted snacks
B
elazu was born to inspire and serve chefs in
every kitchen. From the UK’s top restaurants
to food lovers and home cooks alike, if you
are passionate about flavour, Belazu will help you to
transform any dish with their range of high-quality
chef-grade ingredients.
When Belazu founder George Bennell tried his first
Provençal olive at a French farmer’s market in 1991 and
decided to bring them back home, their rich partnership
with chefs was born. Today, those olives – along a
rich variety of authentic ingredients – are available for
everyone from home cooks to culinary experts.
Belazu prides itself on sourcing the finest ingredients
from around the world. From the sun-drenched groves
of the Mediterranean to the bustling spice markets of
the Middle East, every product is selected with care
and a commitment to quality and provenance that
you can taste. If they’re not proud enough to present
a product to a Michelin-starred chef, then they won’t
source it or produce it.
Their extensive range includes everything from pantry
staples such as Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic
Vinegar of Modena, to speciality items such as Truffle
and Artichoke Pesto, Rose Harissa Paste and Tahini.
Their website is not just a store, it is a hub of culinary
inspiration featuring recipes, tips, and inspiration from
food enthusiasts and professional chefs.
Belazu’s Head of Product Innovation, Andrew Ritchie,
says, “Belazu ingredients have been proudly supplied
to chefs in the UKs best restaurants for over 30 years,
and we’re excited to be sharing these same products
with consumers through their local supermarket,
allowing home cooks to replicate restaurant-quality
dishes in their own kitchens.”
When it came to selecting their packaging, Belazu
needed to put their trust in someone who would
reflect their commitment to quality, sustainability, and
customer satisfaction, so we were thrilled to be given
the opportunity to help.
Choosing National Flexible as your packaging supplier
means partnering with a company that is dedicated
to excellence, innovations, and sustainability. We
knew how important it was to provide Belazu with
packaging that helps to retain the authentic taste and
high quality, with effective protection during transport.
With all of this in mind, together we produced a 20
OPP/28 Extendo laminate, with a soft touch lacquer.
High quality packaging reinforces Belazu’s brand
image as a purveyor of premium, gourmet products.
Attractive, well-designed packaging not only stands
out on shelves but also builds trust with customers,
assuring them of the products quality and the
company’s attention to detail.
With Belazus’ commitment to sustainability being
extended to their snack range, they prioritise
environmentally friendly sourcing and packaging,
allowing you to enjoy their delicious nut and snack
mixes with a clear conscience. The new packaging has
been produced to be conveniently recycled in store,
helping to reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions,
conserving natural resources.
The Smoked Chilli Nut Mix, Rosemary Snack Mix,
and Truffle & Pecorino Nut Mix are hand roasted
with care, ensuring a level of craftmanship that massproduced
snacks simply cannot match. So, if you
haven’t tried them yet – why not give them a try?
If you would like to discuss your packaging needs, let
us help you elevate your brand with packaging that
not only protects and preserves, but also enhances the
appeal of your products.

ICE CREAM VANS MATTERS
Conversions go hybrid!
Summer’s here! And this can only mean one
thing – more ice cream vans and mobile
catering vans. As the temperature soars,
there’s nothing better than the sound of the
local ice cream van or the delicious evening
smells of street food wafting from a food van.
There are estimated to be 5,000 ice cream
vans operating in the UK, selling everything
from Mr Whippies, to Mediterranean Ices and
7,000 street food units serving Mexican Tacos
through to Asian fusion.
For many people, the thought of running
their own street food service or ice cream
parlour on wheels though is just a pipe dream,
but not anymore!

Anest Iwata Spray
Guns to achieve
the premium

polypropylene components put less pressure
on the gun and the lack of seals and baffles
stop the gun from fluttering. The bodyshop has
fully-fitted spray booths ready for action, with
industrial-strength ramps rated at 5,000kg to
load all vehicles.
The result? World-class body work, with trafficstopping,
intricate attention to detail.
If you’re a first-timer starting out, looking to
revamp your vehicle in time for the summer
festivals or want your van to make a statement,
the boys at Royal Conversions will make your

Don’t just take our word for it – the company

spray booths in action and before and after

FOOD SAFETY MATTERS
Microwave enhanced
ashing of food samples –
application report
he ashing test on
Tfood samples is
commonly used for
evaluation of mineral
content because this
content plays an
important role from a
physicochemical and
nutritional point of view.
Ash content analysis is
also an accepted index
of refinement of foods,
such as wheat flour or
sugar production since the ash test is a
reliable indicator of efficiency of which the
separation of bran and germ from the rest
of the wheat kernel. Mineral constituents
include potassium, sodium, calcium, and
magnesium that are often present in larger
amounts as well as smaller quantities
of aluminium, iron, copper, manganese,
arsenic, zinc, arsenic, iodine, and fluorine.
Traditional ashing methods for food
samples have used electrical muffle
furnaces that have disadvantages such
as long ashing times, extended cooling,
and high power consumption. An
alternative and rapid ashing method
for determination of mineral content in
food samples using an
enhanced microwave
system is available
from Analytix. The
Milestone PYRO
system incorporates
all the benefits of
using microwaves and
working with specially
developed fast heating/
cooling crucibles makes
the ashing application
fast, easy, and efficient,
coupled with complete safety with all
fumes produced during the process
diverted away from the user.
An application report highlighting the
advantages of a microwave enhanced
ashing system is available that demonstrates
the recoveries of a certified food standard
material being in compliance with the
certificate value plus the reproducibility
of the method due to temperature
homogeneity across the muffle.

P S Analytical: Experience,
performance, reliability
and support
S Analytical (PSA) provides niche
P analytical instruments for the trace
and ultra-trace determination of mercury,
arsenic, selenium, antimony and bismuth
in food and beverage samples.
These toxic metals in their various
forms are of real concern to those
administrating food safety programs and
to all food processors and manufacturers
of food and feed products. Increasingly
the determination of both total and
speciated chemical forms is required
to assess product quality and this
requirement generates further analytical
challenges of sensitivity, selectivity and
freedom for interferences.
Coupling Atomic Fluorescence
Spectroscopy (AFS) with either cold
vapour generation or hydride generation
has been PSA’s core competency for
over 30 years providing this detection
capability. With the addition of analyte
separation that allows for speciation
studies, PSA offers some powerful tools
to help with these endeavours.
Some examples include the separation
of methyl mercury from inorganic
mercury in water, shellfish, seaweed,
dairy products, vegetables and grains
& the determination inorganic arsenic
from less toxic organo-arsenic species
in water, rice, seaweed are examples of
routine applications developed by PSA.
With literally thousands of systems in
the field today, and support networks
in Europe, USA and SE Asia, PSA offers
the ideal package of performance,
reliability and support.

MANUFACTURING MATTERS
DMN-WESTINGHOUSE Rota
Setting new standards for the dairy
industry
Product quality, product safety. The
guiding mantra in dairy production.
That’s why the world’s leading dairy
producers rely on the products and solutions
developed by DMN-WESTINGHOUSE. Our
rotary valves and diverter valves offer the
highest level of precision engineering, preventing
bridging and possible contamination during
conveying processes. At the same time, they
guarantee unparalleled cleanability, drastically
increasing product safety while reducing
downtime for maintenance and repairs.
Taking up the challenges
Through years of experience and valuable
partnerships, DMN-WESTINGHOUSE has
gained a deep understanding of the global
dairy industry and its challenges. We have
earned the trust of an industry where hygiene,
cleanability, and safety are paramount. In our
R&D department, we leverage innovative
technology, setting the dairy industry
standard. In our factories, we control every
step in the manufacturing of heavy-duty
rotary valves and diverter valves.
Always compliant
Just like you, we strive for unparalleled
quality and consistency. A commitment
underscored by our compliance with current
certifications, including USDA, EHEDG-ED
Class II and ATEX. Whether it’s about infant
formula, lactoferrin, (plant-based) milk
powders, caseinates or probiotics, at DMN-
WESTINGHOUSE, we help you maintain the
highest quality standards in dairy.
Heavy-duty, finest quality
Many producers of dairy products, ranging
from baby formula to lactoferrin, rely on our
renowned heavy-duty rotary valves. These
valves come in two types and various sizes:
the drop-through type (AL/AXL/AML) and
the blow-through type (BL/BXL/BXXL).
They comfortably comply with the stringent
hygiene standards the dairy industry needs
to maintain. All product contact surfaces
consist of food-grade material, polished to
perfection. They are all radiused and polished
to an astonishing 0.8μm Ra (150 grit), and
the rotor vanes have precisely chamfered
edges preventing the build-up of conveyed
dairy powders.
MZC-series: standard for safety,
hygiene and cleanability
Cleaning intervals will vary depending on
which dry dairy substances are processed. To
reduce cleaning time and resulting downtime,
we developed the MZC rotary valves based
on our AL and BL series. The MZC-I and
MZC-II are equipped with supporting
rails so the rotor and end cover can be
removed. The MZC-II opens on two sides
for unprecedented easy access and superior
cleanability.
These valves facilitate premium process
handling, raising the bar in cleanability,
hygiene, and safety. The rotor body clearances
are set automatically when the rotary valve is
closed after cleaning.
Options for ultimate safety and reliability
Adding innovative solutions can take your
dairy production to the next level.
We offer:
● Rotor Interference Detection (RID 3.0) is our
third generation, detecting unwanted contact
between the rotor and body or end covers.
This prevents major damage and provides
insight into product contamination. RID
3.0 offers 50 times more accurate resistance
measurement than its predecessors.
● Shaft seal flow control boosts the
reliability of our AL and BL heavy-duty

ry Valves and Diverter Valves
rotary valve series even more. Precise flow
control prevents the build-up of powder
residue on the shaft seals, minimising
the risks of seal failure, contamination,
leakage, damage and downtime.
● Rotary valves equipped with the Sanitary
Air Seal (SAS) outboard bearing shaft
seal minimise leak risks due to pressure
changes inside the valve, thus maintaining
the right airflow.
Cleaning-in-place (CIP)
For maintaining hygiene and preventing
contamination, cleaning-in-place (CIP) is
indispensable. CIP is about cleaning the
interior of pipelines, valves, tanks and other
equipment without the need for disassembly.
In the dairy industries it’s a necessary, often
automated method to maintain the highest
levels of hygiene and prevent contamination.
Your perfect Niro replacement
Handling dry dairy solids is about
maintaining the strictest standards and
requirements 24/7. Are you currently
operating Niro rotary valves needing
replacement any time soon? Our NR347
rotary valves (NR = Niro replacement) match
the outer dimensions of the Niro valves
operating within your system, which means
they are usually a perfect fit. The NR347 is
based on our heavy-duty AL250 model and
is made of stainless steel. Meeting all hygiene
and safety standards, the NR347 will prove
its value day in and day out.
Our diverter valves: boosting
efficiency and hygiene
Diverging and converging powders or
granulates is a daily routine in dairy
production. Safety, efficiency and maximum
hygiene are key. That’s why our 2-TDV,
3-TDV, M-TDV, and GPD diverter valves
are very much in demand.
● Our 2-TDV and 3-TDV diverter valves
are designed for quick disassembly and
streamlined distribution. The 2-TDV
effortlessly handles two destinations,
while the 3-TDV targets three.
● The M-TDV efficiently handles the
pneumatic transport of powders or pellets,
diverging and converging flows to multiple
destinations. Available in different sizes,
offering up to 14 ports.
● Our diverter valves are the perfect choice
for systems needing regular, quick cleaning
with minimal downtime.

Introducing Scalibur TM :
Next-level potato slicing with
Dual Rotation Technology
FAM STUMABO
introduces the Scalibur TM ,
a revolutionary potato slicer
designed to deliver unmatched
gentleness and efficiency. This
innovative machine features a
patented rotation technology
where both the cutting head
and the impeller rotate for a
controlled and gentle cutting
process.
Whereas potatoes were
previously pushed against a
static knife, the Scalibur TM features
a rotating blade that slices through
the potato at a lower speed. This,
combined with the independent
centrifugal force of the impeller,
minimises impact damage to the
potato’s cell structure. This results
in less starch and scrap loss and
thus less fryer contamination. The
slicer is equipped with powerful
dual stainless-steel motors and
the patented Smart Slicing system
allows differential speed adjustments
with varying gravities. The reduced
impact on blades and segments from
foreign objects results in lower parts
consumption and repair costs.
The slicer is widely used in potato
chip production, but also delivers
perfect results in the production
of vegetable chips from carrots,
beetroot, sweet potatoes, taro,
parsnip, etc. Supplied with a
full range of interchangeable
cutting heads, Scalibur TM allows
for different types of cuts to be
produced: flat, crinkle or V-cut
slices or sticks in many dimensions.
