FUSO Glass charts the future of
automated glass processing in India
In Conversation With GB, MD Ashok Jain Shares How FUSO Glass Is Redefining
Architectural & OEM Glass Manufacturing
Glass Bulletin speaks with FUSO Glass MD Ashok Jain on automation, innovation and
growth strategies shaping India’s glass processing industry.
In an exclusive interaction with
Glass Bulletin, Mr. Ashok Jain,
Managing Director of Fuso
India Glass Pvt. Ltd., discusses
the company’s remarkable growth
journey, cutting-edge fully automated
facilities in Mumbai and Chennai, and
its vision to lead India’s architectural
and OEM glass markets.
He highlights how strategic
investments in Industry 4.0
technologies, global partnerships
Mr Ashok Jain
Managing Director, Fuso India Glass Pvt. Ltd.
and customer-focused innovation
are positioning FUSO Glass at the
forefront of the country’s evolving
glass processing landscape.
Excerpts from the conversation:
– Could you briefly introduce Fuso
India Glass Pvt. Ltd. and share your
journey so far as a leading name
in architectural and OEM glass
processing?
I’m pleased to share the journey
and growth story of FUSO Glass.
The promoters of FUSO Glass
have been associated with the glass
industry for over six decades. What
began as a modest trading business
evolved significantly over the years.
The IT boom of the mid-1990s
was a turning point. With the rise
of IT parks and major government
infrastructure projects, glass
transitioned from a basic lighttransmitting
element to a structural
and aesthetic material. It was now
expected to address safety, strength,
thermal, acoustic, and design
requirements. Recognizing this shift,
FUSO made a strategic entry into
glass processing.
We established our first processing
unit in 2004 in Sriperumbudur,
Chennai, followed by Hyderabad in
2009 and Mumbai in 2011. In addition
to architectural glass, we diversified
into automotive, locomotive, and
OEM segments to meet growing
market demand.
In 2023, we launched India’s first
fully automated, state-of-the-art
facility in Sriperumbudur, dedicated
exclusively to OEM and industrial
glass.
In 2025, with the support of Yinrui,
China, we launched India’s first fully
automated, state-of-the-art facility
in Mumbai, dedicated exclusively
to architectural glass processing—a
milestone driven by our vision to
meet the evolving demands of these
precision-focused sectors.
Our journey continues with a vision
to bring world-class glass solutions
to the Indian market. Today, we are
recognized for our quality, service,
and process innovation with a strong

customer focus. FUSO is a Goldrated
glass processor under Saint-
Gobain’s Quality Excellence Program
(QEP).
– What has been the driving vision
behind setting up two state-ofthe-art,
fully automated facilities in
Mumbai and Chennai?
Honestly, the vision of my son Jainik
Jain has been the driving force
behind the creation of our fully
automated, state-of-the-art plants.
During and after the COVID period,
he recognized that this technology
would shape the future of glass
processing in India. He played a
crucial role throughout—from
designing the layout to selecting
machines and technology.
With the world economy
Mumbai Architectural Unit
increasingly viewing India as a viable
alternative in the global supply chain,
we see significant opportunities
ahead. Setting up fully automated
plants in Mumbai and Chennai is a
strategic investment to future-proof
our operations. These facilities are
a reflection of our commitment to
continuous improvement, customer
satisfaction, and leadership through
technology.
– Can you elaborate on the new
architectural glass processing plant
in Mumbai? What makes it stand out
in terms of technology, capacity, and
capabilities?
FUSO is at the forefront of building
next-generation smart factories. We
take great pride in being the first
glass processing company in India to
take bold strides toward Industry 4.0.
Yinrui’s line is seamlessly connected
to our ERP through an MES platform,
enabling end-to-end data flow, realtime
monitoring and process control.
This advanced setup features
online laser marking technology,
enabling unique identification of
each glass piece through QR codes.
As glass moves through various
processing stages—from cutting
and edge grinding to tempering and
insulation—the system ensures zero
human intervention, with intelligent
automation rotating the glass
precisely for each stage.
The integrated buffer system
optimizes bed utilization, significantly
enhancing overall productivity.
– What types of architectural glass
products and solutions will this new
facility cater to? Are there any special
focus areas such as high-performance
façades or jumbo-size glass?
The Mumbai plant is strategically
positioned to serve the rapidly
expanding architectural glass
segment in western India. Driven by
the increasing number of skyscrapers
and high-rise developments across
the region—particularly in the
commercial capital—there has been
a significant surge in demand for
jumbo-sized architectural glass.
In response, we have recently
undertaken a major expansion to
address this demand by offering a
comprehensive portfolio of highperformance
architectural glass
solutions. We have invested in
world-class technologies, including
a state-of-the-art jumbo tempering
line from LandGlass and advanced
pre-processing systems from
HanGlasstec. The facility is further
equipped with a robotic Insulated
Glass Unit (IGU) line from Hanjiang to
support modern façade designs and
green building requirements.
To ensure precision, scalability,
and consistent quality in jumbo glass
production, the plant incorporates a
fully automated processing line from
Yinrui. This end-to-end automation
enables optimized throughput while
maintaining the highest standards in
architectural glass manufacturing.

Interview
Mumbai Architectural Unit
Mr Jainik Jain
– Tell us more about the OEM glass
processing unit set up in Chennai.
What industries or applications will
this plant primarily serve?
This unit of ours in Chennai is
broadly known as the Industrial
Glass Unit. It is dedicated to
producing glass for various
applications such as home
appliances, solar panels, and the
furniture segment.
It is specially tailored with
end-to-end automation for
high-volume production with
the capability to achieve tight
tolerances, quick changeovers, and
flexibility—critical for industrial
glass applications.
– With OEM demands increasing,
how does this Chennai facility
enhance your responsiveness and
competitiveness in that segment?
Post-COVID, the industrial glass
sector experienced a severe supply
shortage, as it was predominantly
dependent on imports. This gap in
the market presented a strategic
opportunity for FUSO to step into
the segment.
Being located near major
automotive and electronics
manufacturing hubs, FUSO was
well-positioned geographically.
However, competing with
international players required more
than proximity—it demanded
world-class quality, zero-defect
deliveries and just-in-time supply
capabilities.
To meet these expectations,
FUSO made the strategic decision
to invest in a fully automated
production line. This transformation
has led to significant reductions in
production rejections, logistics lead
times, and overall costs, enabling
FUSO to be more agile, reliable,
and competitive in the industrial
glass market.
– What unique technologies or
innovations have been incorporated
in the Chennai plant to meet high
precision and volume requirements?
We have invested in cutting-edge
European technology, including
high-precision cutting systems
and 3-axis CNC grinding and
milling machines, integrated with
high-speed conveyors and robotic

Edgetech showcases Super Spacer ®
innovation at glasspro INDIA 2025
Flexible T-Shaped Spacer Offers Energy Efficiency, Design Flexibility & Precision
Edge Sealing For Future-Ready Insulating Glass
Edgetech Europe presents Super Spacer® at glasspro INDIA 2025, highlighting energy
efficiency and architectural flexibility in glazing.
Edgetech Europe, the
manufacturer of the flexible
insulating glass spacer system
Super Spacer®, will be presenting its
product range at the International
Exhibition for Flat Glass Processing
Products and Accessories from 10 to
12 September 2025, at Stand B44 in
Hall 3.
Joachim Stoss, Vice President
of International Sales at Edgetech
Europe/Quanex Inc., explains:
“From Killa Design’s Museum of the
Future and Zaha Hadid’s The Opus
in Dubai to the new headquarters
of the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)
in Copenhagen, Super Spacer®
is featured on world-renowned
buildings.
“Thanks to the flexible material,
it brings very specific advantages
to each project. For example, freeform
and parametric glass façades
are virtually impossible to achieve
with rigid spacers, while the silicone
structural foam of the Super Spacer®
conforms precisely to all glass shapes
and reliably compensates for all
tolerance deviations at the edges
of curved insulating glass units. In
addition, the flexible material helps
to resist climatic changes and wind
loads in the space between the
panes.”
Super Spacer® crucial
contribution to meeting
energy efficiency targets
For projects such as the MOL Campus
in Budapest, the warm edge function
is particularly important. With a
Psi value of up to 0.029 W/mK for
the Super Spacer® T-Spacer, the
spacer has extremely low thermal
conductivity. It effectively prevents
thermal bridging at the edge of the
insulating glass, helping achieve even
the most demanding energy targets.
“Whether you want to create a
spectacular tower with a structural
glazing façade or a smaller residential
project with insulated glass windows,
you can achieve excellent U-values
with any product in the Super
Spacer® range. This means you can
also meet the high demands on
glazing for sustainability and building
certifications such as DGNB, LEED,
and BREEAM,” states Area Manager
78 Glass Bulletin | July - September, 2025

Fabrice Keller.
T-shape of the Super
Spacer® ensures edge seal
integrity
Thanks to its unique shape and
100% resilience, the spacer system
made of T-shaped silicone foam can
withstand the pumping movements
of insulating glazing countless
times. Its structure provides several
advantages:
;;
Substantial reduction in
tension levels on the butyl
cord and secondary seal
;;
Prevents the butyl cord from
entering the visible area of the
glass unit
;;
Suitable for both manual and
automated application
;;
Ideal for flat and free-form
glazing
Super Spacer® ensures low
thermal conductivity
Psi values allow comparison
of different spacers’ thermal
performance. A difference of 0.04
W/mK in the Psi value translates to
a 0.1 W/mK improvement in the Uw
value. Super Spacer® products offer
Psi values as low as 0.029 W/mK,
efficiently preventing thermal bridges
through which valuable energy could
be lost.
“Our most popular products also
have Passive House certification.
Manufacturers, architects, and
project managers are opting for a
mature and future-proof product. All
Super Spacer® products significantly
contribute to low U-values, reduced
heating and cooling costs, and an
improved indoor environment.
With automated production and
warm edge technology as standard,
insulating glass manufacturers and
processors are preparing for the
future,” adds Fabrice Keller.
Exact parallelism also
ensured with XXL glazing
Up to an edge length of 3.5 metres,
a deviation of 4 millimetres from the
straight edge is allowed; for larger
lengths, the deviation may be up to 6
millimetres. Precision is essential—
not only for standards but also for
visual appeal.
“With the increasing size of
insulating glass units, rigid spacer
frames are becoming harder to
manage due to their lack of tensile
strength and tendency to bend,”
says Joachim Stoss. In contrast, the
flexible Super Spacer® is applied
from rolls on partially or fully
automated lines with robotic support,
offering outstanding precision and
immediate stability even in oversized
glazing applications due to its
excellent adhesive strength.

Glass industry meets AI: And the
glazier trade?
From Production Lines To Office Desks: AI Finds Growing Relevance Across The
Flat Glass And Glazier Value Chain
AI is transforming flat glass manufacturing and slowly entering glazier workflows,
boosting efficiency, automation, and workforce adaptability.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is
increasingly being used in
manufacturing by major
flat glass producers with a view to
optimising processes, reducing energy
consumption and CO₂ emissions, and
securing competitiveness long term.
But are AI applications also already
of relevance to glass processors and
the glazier trade? This question was
explored by the author on behalf of
glasstec, the world-leading trade
fair for glass producers and the
associated machinery manufacturers,
but also for glass processors and the
glazier trade.
In machine technology and
manufacturing processes, AI
developments have been driven
intensively over the past few years.
The improvement of administrative
processes, however, was followed less
closely even though AI developments
also hold plenty of potential here.
In industrial flat glass production,
AI is already being used in machine
producer technologies such as in
automation platforms to dynamically
adapt production flows by adaptive
process control or material flow
optimisation, for example. AIassisted
image processing is used
for high-precision defect detection
and dimension control in flat glass
production. AI can be used in socalled
digital twins for predictive
maintenance or the smart control of
sizing and warehousing processes.
In the glazier trade and glass
processing, by contrast, AI still seems
to be less systematically deployed.
Nevertheless, initial applications are
also finding practical use, as Karsten
Sommer of the Hamburg Glaziers’
Karsten Sommer (Hamburg Glaziers’ Guild) also sees
an increasing use of AI applications in the glazier trade,
especially if they are integrated into existing systems or can
be coupled with them.
Photo: Glaser-Innung Hamburg
Guild revealed: “Many outfits are
starting to look at this topic. This is
especially easy to achieve when AI
becomes part of the systems already
used such as AI-based office and
communication tools like Microsoft
Copilot, Google Workspace AI or
ChatGPT. These can easily help with
text-based proposals, calculations
or appointment organisation.”
Other imaging AI tools such as
Canva AI, Midjourney or DALL·E 3
help users get a first impression or
provide inspiration for visualising
workpieces, products or construction
planning, thereby making days of
rendering done by high-performance

production and processing in order data capture.

computers increasingly superfluous –
at least for initial designs or concepts.
Initial concrete applications:
order entry
All this means AI allows both
companies big and small to free
up time with the help of assistance
systems. A case in point is order
entry, which – except with classic
electronic data interchange systems
– is often performed manually due
to its complexity. Here, plenty of time
is tied up in data transfer, queries
and error corrections – because only
very few enquiries are complete
and precisely formulated from the

outset. Add to this the wide variety of
enquiries – there are glass producers
capable of supplying IGUs in ten
thousand possible configurations.
How the order data entry process
can be noticeably simplified by AI
was explained by Georg Katzlinger-
Söllradl, CEO and co-founder of the
start-up “Lumeso,” who exhibited
his AI solutions for the first time at
glasstec 2024: “Our software analyses
incoming e-mails, automatically
identifies all relevant order data
and compiles them in a structured
manner. Missing data is completed
automatically by smart queries. After
release by the case handler, the
data is transferred directly to the
order data capturing system via an
interface. This solution was only made
possible for us by the availability
of performance AI systems. AI in
administration markedly increases
the speed of order data capture,
significantly reduces errors and
considerably minimises the
throughput time from order entry to
confirmation.”
The efficiency gain is attractive,
but customers were particularly
interested because they lacked
relevant staff or did not even find the
staff to manage existing processes
to start with. Katzlinger-Söllradl:
“We soon realised we can also help
combat skilled labour shortages with
our AI. Experienced employees can
reduce their workload and focus on
control and decision-making tasks,
while younger staff can be drawn
into the exciting flat glass working
environment by modern, attractive AI
solutions.”
A view at the state of the
art gives hope: the increasing
availability of modular AI tools
and the development of handson
sector-specific solutions can
increase efficiency, prompt positive
developments for everyday work,
while making employers more
attractive at the same time. We can
look forward to glasstec 2026 where
AI & Digital Technologies will be
Hot Topics alongside circularity and
decarbonisation.

Flexible, High-Performance Warm-Edge Spacers
Bring Fluid Design And Structural Precision To
Parisian Architectural Landmark
With applications ranging
from automated largescale

and monument protection Quanex
Company Edgetech claims that its
flexible Super Spacer® is the ideal
solution for all projects, even the
most challenging ones. For example,
it was used in the restoration and
modernisation of the magnificent
Pathé Palace in Paris, a building from
the Parisian Belle Époque, by Renzo
Piano Building Workshop.
The successful
transformation of an iconic
film venue.
For over 150 years, the building at
the intersection of Boulevard des
Capucines and Rue de la Chaussée
d’Antin has been a cultural landmark.
Originally opened in 1869 as a
vaudeville theatre, it was converted
into a cinema by Paramount in 1927
and later transformed into a luxurious
film palace by Renzo Piano on behalf
of the Pathé Group. The new Pathé
Palace boasts seven state-of-the-art
auditoriums with LED screens and
heated, adjustable leather seats.
At the same time, the golden
age of Parisian Belle Époque and
widescreen cinema has been
brought back to life. Instead of
streaming from the comfort of your

façade, characterised by three

Art Deco-style bar. Designed by
Jacques Grange, probably the world’s
most famous interior designer, it
offers a breathtaking view of the
vibrant theatre district in Paris’s 9th
arrondissement.
“Light and transparency are
very close friends.”
This quote by Renzo Piano
encapsulates the design leitmotif
of many of his buildings. The Pathé
Palace was therefore completely
gutted and extensively glazed
at street level. The building’s
transparency is intended to invite the
city to enter the light-flooded atrium,
‘the piazza’. Only the striking dome,
rotunda and natural stone façade
from the Belle Époque period were
reconstructed. In accordance with
official specifications, some interior
elements such as the grooved marble,
stucco work and cast-iron banisters
also had to be integrated into the
redesign.
An inverted glass pyramid
dominates the 300-square-metre
‘piazza’ behind the entrance area.
Measuring just 45 square metres at
its base, this elegant glass and steel
structure expands to a width of 29
metres, creating a clear opening of 154
square metres and allowing natural
light to flood into the building five
storeys deep. The 1,200-squaremetre,
150-tonne interior façade
is suspended. To hold and stabilise
the filigree mullion-transom system
for the glazing, façade builder Josef
Gartner constructed a light grey,
painted steel structure.
Super Spacer®: flexible for
difficult geometries, light
grey for transparency
Gartner and the renowned bending
specialists at Döring Glass developed
a technically complex insulating
glass construction for the corners.
The 28 double cylindrically curved
rectangular panes ranged in
dimension from 1638 x 5546 mm
to 1663 x 3440 mm. The 44- and
46-degree bends each form a
90-degree corner with a flat section
in between, followed by a short
straight section after the bends.
The radii range from 100 to 150
millimetres, depending on the
bend. The inner and outer panes are
made of 12 mm laminated safety
glass composed of extra-clear
DIAMANT® float glass and PVB film.
A 10-millimetre-wide Super Spacer®
TriSeal Premium Plus spacer in ‘light
grey’ was used in the space between
the panes. The architects had
specified a grey spacer for the entire
glass pyramid. As it virtually merges
with the glass, the spacer plays its
part in realising Renzo Piano’s vision
of an atmosphere of light, airiness and
transparency.
Martin Lenz, Sales Manager at
Döring Glass, emphasises: “Super
Spacer TriSeal Premium is ideal for
difficult geometries as it can adapt
flexibly to any contour. Fortunately,
Edgetech allows for individual colour
selection, so we were able to meet all
the technical specifications without
any problems.”
Joachim Stoss, Edgetech Europe’s

the most demanding architectural
requirements in terms of edge seal
aesthetics. Curved glass is finding
more and more applications in
architecture as it enables the creation
of fluid, organic shapes. The fine art
of glass bending and the production
of free-form glass are integral to
parametrically planned building
envelopes.”
Super Spacer® flexible spacers
are ideal for curved glass, as they can
adapt to complex curves and radii.
However, they also offer advantages
for flat glazing. Their elasticity reduces
stress in the edge seal and distributes
forces evenly, thereby minimising the
risk of breakage. During production,
they facilitate precise application,
even with tight radii. They also absorb
hardly any climatic loads, which
relieves the edge seal even further.
They ensure maximum accuracy and
parallelism of the panes, as well as
clean edges, with both automated
and manual processing, particularly
with large format insulating glass
elements.
“Super Spacer has several key
properties that make it ideal for
clean corner formation in the edge
seal. Applying it from the roll enables
precise 45-degree transitions. Thanks
to its elasticity, the silicone structural
foam can adapt better to the corners
of the glass, ensuring an even surface
without the risk of bubbles forming,”
explains Christoph Rubel, technology
expert at Edgetech.
A view of the Boulevard des
Capucines as seen through
double-curved XL glasses.
For the Pathé Palace’s rotunda façade,
Döring combined and realised two
further manufacturing challenges
with Super Spacer®: large format
curved double glazing, with the
largest piece measuring 963 by 4,811
millimetres and comprising three
different glass structures.
“Only white glass was used for the
24 curved insulating glazing units
on the exterior of the building. In
some cases, this was combined with
ECLAZ and ECLAZ ONE coatings
to maximise transparency and light
transmission while ensuring optimal
thermal insulation,” says Lenz.
The curved glass underwent
various long-term tests on ageing
behaviour, dew point and gas
concentration over a period of more
than six months before installation
and acceptance by the client, in
order to prove the performance and
reliability of the spacer.
“In a constantly changing world,
adaptability is the key to success,”
explains Joachim Stoss of Edgetech.
“Super Spacer provides our customers
with the means to react to current
market requirements and proactively
shape future trends.”

MAC-YUGONG and BOYU’s 5th
automation milestone in jumbo
glass manufacturing
A Fully Integrated 5400 Sqm Factory Sets New Benchmarks In Automation,
Efficiency & Premium Glass Processing
MAC-YUGONG delivers its fifth automation project for BOYU, establishing an
advanced jumbo glass factory with seamless digital integration.
BOYU, the renowned glass
processor, established a 4,000
sqm automation factory in
2019. In 2025, it invested in a Jumbo
glass automation factory (3,300
× 7,000 mm). This marks the fifth
automation project completed for
BOYU, and once again, the MAC-
YUGONG team delivered exceptional
results.
The new Jumbo glass production
factory, spanning 5,400 sqm, features
a fully integrated setup designed
by the MAC-YUGONG team. This
includes a raw glass storage system,
a 2-in-1 laser marking and cutting
line, a double edger, a 35-layer
sorting system, a tempering furnace,
a vertical sorting system, a PVB
lamination line, and a TPS/4SG
warm-edge IG line. The factory
primarily produces jumbo insulating
glass units for premium windows.
Automation System
Introduction
1. MAC Warehouse
Management System (WMS)
Production begins with the handling
of raw glass sheets. Workers use a
handheld scanner (PDA) to scan
each package, instantly uploading
data to the ERP system. This ensures
real-time inventory visibility for
both offline and online raw glass
storage. The ERP system then
optimizes based on order structures
and communicates with the MES
system, forming the basis of precise
production planning.
Based on WMS instructions,
glass sheets are transported to
the warehouse for storage and
unpacking. With 32 racks (each

storing 1–2 packages), the system
meets daily production needs.
Shuttle cars transport glass to the
loading table as needed, ensuring a
smooth flow of materials.
2. Precision Cutting and
Identification
Using advanced algorithms, the ERP
system optimizes cutting to maximize
raw material usage, saving significant
long-term costs. At the laser marking
table, each glass sheet is assigned
a unique identity, with the ability to
mark 3C certifications, QR codes,
logos, and more. A 4mm × 4mm
barcode enhances traceability and
efficiency. Post-cutting, a CCD device
records detailed information and
feeds it back to the ERP for quality
control.
3. Edging Process and
Special Handling
The MAC MES system minimizes
the frequency of double edger
opening/closing. It shares data so
the edger auto-adjusts to various
sizes, thicknesses, or edge deletion
requirements. For example, it
automatically removes Low-E
coatings where specified. Oversized
and small glass sheets requiring
drilling are offloaded separately for
specialized handling.
4. Horizontal Storage and
Sorting System
A rotary table connects the double
edger to a 35-floor horizontal
storage and sorting system. The
MES system determines the glass
rotation direction using the MACsoft
algorithm, optimizing transfer
efficiency and ensuring high-quality
outputs—especially important for
curtain wall production. Another CCD
device captures data and updates the
MES in real time. The space-saving
system includes a cloud ladder with
dual functions: the upper layer as an
inlet conveyor and the lower layer as
an outlet and batching layer with XYZ
three-dimensional batching to fully
load the tempering furnace.

5. Advanced Batching and
Tempering
The MACsoft algorithm pre-batches
glasses of different sizes to maximize
loading. A second rotary table
connects the sorting system to the
tempering furnace. Glass sheets are
arranged in a three-dimensional
layout for optimized batching, guided
by three principles:
;;
Maximum loading capacity
;;
Order prioritization
;;
Quality assurance (especially
for curtain walls)
Post-tempering, another CCD device
detects defective or self-exposed
glass. If found, the MES automatically
initiates compensation procedures.
6. Shuttle Systems and Line
Integration
The vertical sorting system includes
two Jumbo 3,300 × 7,000 mm
shuttle cars, five sorting crates,
and slideways. This supports PVB
lamination, IGU production, and
laminated-IGU production.
Shuttle #1 transfers glass from the
tempering furnace. Laminated glass
exiting the autoclave also enters the
system via Shuttle #1. Crates with
hundreds of slots accommodate
varying glass thicknesses and widths.
Slots are optimized to store multiple
sizes, maximizing utilization.
The MES optimizes pairing
before IG and lamination lines,
reducing manpower and boosting
efficiency. Shuttle #2 then seamlessly
directs glass to its respective line,
maintaining a continuous flow.
The BOYU Jumbo Glass
Automation Factory is a significant
milestone in smart manufacturing.
With a full suite of MACsoft
systems—ERP, MES, and WMS—
this facility represents cutting-edge
integration of hardware and software.
Beyond producing premium jumbo
insulating glass units, this factory sets
a new industry standard in efficiency,
traceability, and sustainability. MAC-
YUGONG is proud to have partnered
with BOYU on five successful projects
and looks forward to scaling new
heights together in the future.

Smart IGU manufacturing in
Industry 4.0 era: From ERP to
automated excellence
Hanjiang Pioneers Intelligent IGU Production, Fusing Software And Hardware Into
A Seamless, Low-Labor Automation Ecosystem.
Hanjiang introduces a fully integrated, intelligent IGU production system combining
ERP, MES, and warm-edge technologies for efficiency.
As Hanjiang continues to
engage deeply with hundreds
of smart factory projects, it
have come to a clear realization:
among all units in architectural glass
deep processing, the insulating glass
(IG) production line consistently
demands the most manpower.
Take the 2021 automation project
by MAC-YUGONG for BOYU, China
as an example. A single shift requires
the following personnel: 1 person for
raw glass storage, 1–2 for cutting, 1 for
edging, 2 for the tempering furnace,
5 for the IG line, and 4 for the
laminating line. In total, an intelligent
factory needs around 15 people per
shift.
If that comparison isn’t compelling
enough, consider the 2023
automation project MAC-YUGONG
executed for FUTENG, China. This
factory is equipped with two smart
processing lines and four IG lines.
Under a two-shift operation, the
cutting-edging-tempering unit
requires 20 people, while the IG
lines demand nearly 50 people (4
lines × 6 people × 2 shifts, plus 2 IG
production managers).
This clearly highlights that the
IG production unit remains a
critical bottleneck in the pursuit
of full automation and smart
manufacturing.
As automation continues to
mature in the glass deep-processing
industry, a key question emerges:
how can manufacturers adopt a
minimal-labor model while truly
achieving cost reduction, efficiency
gains, and quality control in IG
production? This has been Hanjiang’s
core research focus over the past
three years. At the 2025 China
Glass Expo, Hanjiang successfully
showcased a fully integrated

The MAC-YUGONG ERP enables
one-click order placement for IGU
production. Unlike conventional ERPs
used in standard glass factories,
our system integrates all technical
specifications for IGU production
right from the order entry stage. This
includes detailed configurations for
Glass A such as glass type, surface
treatment (printing, sandblasting),
thickness, manufacturer, and
processing flow (cutting, grinding/
polishing, Low-E edge deletion,
tempering, IGU).
It also defines spacer bar types
like aluminum, Super Spacer, TPS,
spacer width, sealant depth, and
whether gas filling is required.
Glass B is configured in parallel. For
shaped or step glass, users can input
dimensions or upload CAD drawings
for customized ordering—creating a
truly integrated and digitalized IGU
workflow.
The clearer and more specific
the information provided during
ERP order placement, the easier
it becomes for the MES system
to interpret and execute, thus
enabling true intelligent production.
In this system, the ERP transmits
production commands directly to the
IG-level MES, which functions as the
“digital production manager” of the
IG line.
The MES communicates directly
with various PLCs, treating each
device with an independent control
system as an individual PLC node.
At the exhibition, the demonstrated
production unit included: an
automatic loading table, compact
vertical sorting system, 90° turning
table, washing machine, visual
inspection system (Line Eyes),
Super Spacer applicator, TSR, gasfilling
press machine, automatic
cork applicator, sealing robot, and
automatic unloading station.
Once the MES receives the day’s
production orders, the operator only
needs to select orders, press “Start,”
and place the designated glass racks
onto the loading table. The system
then automatically sends both clear
and Low-E glass into the sorting
system. Each piece is scanned by
a CCD camera, and the associated
QR code—which contains all ERPdefined
order data—is read and
logged.
The sorting system intelligently
groups glass into A/B pairs before
sending them for washing. For
workshops with limited space,
L-shaped or U-shaped layouts offer
efficient alternatives. The glass then
turns 90 degrees into a high-speed
washing machine with pre-washing
features. It supports large panels with
thicknesses ranging from 3 mm to 25
mm.
The updated air knife significantly
increases drying speed to 10–12
meters per minute, enabling fullsurface,
dead-zone-free cleaning.
For high-quality glass, inspection
is essential. The Line Eyes visual
inspection system accommodates
varying customer definitions of
surface defects, accurately detecting
all standard flaws.
Beyond the automated
transmission of production
orders, a core aspect of intelligent
manufacturing is replacing manual
operations with automation.

Hanjiang’s Super Spacer applicator
and TSR streamline the traditionally
labor-intensive processes associated
with aluminum spacers—including
cutting/bending, desiccant filling,
butyl application, and manual frame
mounting.
Upon receiving MES instructions,
the system automatically identifies
spacer type (Super Spacer or TPS)
and thickness, completing the framemounting
process in one step. This
transition to warm-edge spacers not
only reduces labor but also enhances
quality, performance, and aesthetics.
The press machine also follows
MES instructions, adapting to
double or triple glazing, step glass
configurations, and gas-filling
requirements with precision.
Similarly, the sealing robot requires
no manual input of spacer width. It
automatically interprets order data
and switches between sealant supply
systems, ensuring seamless and
accurate sealing.
Once sealing is complete, the glass
is transferred to the designated rack
via the automatic unloading station.
This intelligent IGU production
unit integrates ERP–MES–PLC data
flow with fully automated machinery,
providing a one-stop solution for
managing complex and diverse IGU
orders.
Ultimately, every smart factory
strives for three key goals: cost
reduction, efficiency improvement,
and quality enhancement. Whether
or not you currently operate a smart
facility, a highly intelligent IGU
processing unit can empower you
with true flexibility and autonomy in
glass production.
The Hanjiang team is ready to help
you unlock deeper insights into the
“know-how” of smart IGU production.

Hotspots in solar
panels: Invisible threats
to solar efficiency
Understanding Causes, Risks, and Solutions for
Hotspots to Maximize Solar Panel Efficiency and
Longevity
Hotspots in solar panels are invisible high-temperature
regions that reduce efficiency, damage materials, and
pose safety risks. Early detection and prevention are
critical.
Hotspots are localized
regions on a photovoltaic
(PV) module that exhibit
significantly higher temperatures
than the surrounding areas. These
temperature anomalies are often
invisible to the naked eye but can
have serious implications for the
module’s electrical performance,
reliability, and safety. Hotspots are
widely regarded as one of the most
persistent and detrimental forms of
performance degradation in solar
panels, often arising from shading,
cell mismatch, and other factors.
While the average surface
temperature of a module under
standard operating conditions might
range between 45–70°C, hotspot
regions can exceed 100°C, potentially

Waaree • 2
damaging cell interconnections,
encapsulants, or even causing
module burnout in extreme cases.
These thermal imbalances not only
reduce power output but can also
shorten the lifespan of a PV system.
Causes of Hotspot
Formation
Hotspots typically originate
from partial obstructions or
inconsistencies within a module
that force certain cells or cell regions
to operate in reverse bias, thereby
dissipating power as heat instead of
generating electricity.
Shading Effects
One of the most common causes is
partial shading due to nearby objects
like trees, poles, or dirt accumulation.
When a cell in a series string is
shaded, it acts as a resistive load,
heating up while the rest of the string
continues to drive current through it.
Cell Mismatch
Variations in electrical properties
among cells, degradation, or
microcracks can result in uneven
current flow. Cells with lower
current generation capacity become
bottlenecks and, under forced
current, dissipate excess energy as
heat.
Defective Bypass Diodes
Bypass diodes are intended to
protect shaded or underperforming
cells by redirecting current flow. A
failed or incorrectly functioning diode
can leave a cell vulnerable to reverse
bias operation, intensifying local
heating.
Manufacturing Defects
Localized impurities, edge isolation
failures, poor soldering, and broken
interconnect ribbons can introduce
electrical discontinuities or elevated
series resistance—both of which
contribute to hotspot development.
Impact on Performance and
Safety
Electrical Degradation
A hotspot leads to increased series
resistance and non-uniform current
generation, lowering the fill factor
and overall module efficiency. Even a
small hotspot, if sustained over time,
can reduce energy yield by several
percentage points annually.
Material Damage
The localized high temperature can
thermally degrade the encapsulant
(typically EVA or POE), causing
browning, delamination, or bubble
formation. The backsheet may
discolor or crack, and solder joints
might melt or fail.
Long-Term Reliability
Frequent hotspot occurrences
accelerate potential-induced
degradation (PID), increase
interconnect fatigue, and promote
arc faults. These degrade system
reliability and may lead to complete
module failure before the expected
25–30-year lifespan.
Fire Hazard
In worst-case scenarios, hotspots
can reach ignition temperatures for
certain polymeric components. This
has led to several reported incidents
where hotspots contributed to
electrical fires, particularly in rooftop
systems with poor ventilation or
insufficient monitoring.
Detection Techniques
Early detection of hotspots is
essential for minimizing their impact.
Common diagnostic methods
include:
;;
Infrared (IR) Thermography:
Uses thermal cameras to
detect temperature anomalies
quickly, especially under load
conditions in sunny weather.
;;
Electroluminescence (EL)
Imaging: Captures cell-level
defects by applying voltage to
the module in dark conditions.
;;
IV Curve Tracing: Detects
deviations in I-V curves that
indicate resistive losses or
damaged cells.
;;
Drone-Based Inspection:
Enables fast thermographic
surveys for utility-scale plants.
Mitigation and Prevention
Strategies
;;
Bypass Diode Optimization:
Proper diode design reduces
reverse biasing risks.
;;
String Design and Orientation:
Avoids shading and mismatch
issues.
;;
Regular Cleaning and
Maintenance: Prevents soiling
from debris, dust, or bird
droppings.
;;
Quality Control in
Manufacturing: Ensures
defect-free modules through
rigorous screening and
uniform soldering.
Industry Standards and
Testing
IEC 61215 includes stress tests to
evaluate module susceptibility to
hotspots, such as:
;;
Hotspot Endurance Test:
Modules are subjected to
artificially induced reverse
bias conditions, and surface
temperature rise is monitored.
;;
Thermal Cycling and Damp
Heat Tests: Simulate aging
effects and test encapsulant
degradation, which hotspots
can accelerate.
Hotspots are a silent yet potent
threat to PV module performance,
often causing irreversible damage
before becoming visible. As solar
installations grow in scale and
complexity, early detection and
mitigation through better design,
diagnostics, and manufacturing
controls are essential to ensure longterm
efficiency, safety, and reliability.

Technology Days 2025: Innovation,
conversation, insights into future of
glass processing
LiSEC Showcases Cutting-Edge Glass Processing Technologies and Automation
Solutions at Technology Days 2025
LiSEC highlighted innovative glass processing technologies, automation solutions, and
sustainability initiatives, offering valuable insights through expert presentations and a
factory visit to Energy Glas.
After a six-year break, the LiSEC
Technology Days took place
again in Bad Arolsen, Germany,
on 25–26 June 2025. Around 60 glass
processing specialists from Germany,
Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands,
and Belgium gathered to discuss
current developments and practical
solutions.
The programme offered engaging
presentations on the latest LiSEC
technologies and an exclusive
factory visit to Energy Glas in
Wolfhagen, near Kassel. The seven
specialist presentations focused
on key topics in glass processing:
spacer application, system planning,
automation, software solutions,
logistics processes, and sustainability.
The highlights of the
presentations
Thanks to advanced simulation
technologies, almost all LiSEC
machines can now be realistically
simulated during the planning
phase—including cycle times,
material flows, and logistics
processes. LiSEC presented two
implementations: the “perfect
factory,” a highly automated line
with maximum throughput, and the
“complex factory,” a flexible solution
for producing challenging special
glass in confined spaces.
In the insulating glass production
area, new solutions for all common
spacer types were presented,
including the FSI-A frame mounting
station with an assembly aid and
the FSA-A flexible spacer applicator.

From grinding to the laser – Elias Leichtfried demonstrates new methods in glass processing
Welcome and opening of the event by
CEO Gottfried Brunbauer
Michael Palmanshofer during the presentation
on system planning in the flat glass industry
enable convenient setup of large
frames, as well as easy cleaning and
inspection of glass lites.
LiSEC also showcased innovations
in glass edge processing. New
procedures, from edge grinding
to laser processing, enable more
precise, faster, and more versatile
operations. The new LiTEC slider
technology ensures perfect
edges—even with poor breakage—
reducing scrap and associated costs.
Additionally, LiSEC presented new
laser applications, including precise
drilling (LDP-A), structured surface
processing and edge deletion
(LSP-A), and permanent glass
labelling (LMS-A).
The IG Sort systems fully automate
handling at the end of the insulating
glass line. Using robots, they ensure
continuous production, automatically
detect shipping racks, and place units
with constant precision—avoiding
deformation even with thermoplastic
spacers. They also allow temporary
storage of wet insulating glass units,
automatic rejection of defective
parts, and autonomous handling
of remakes, leading to greater
productivity, flexibility, and reduced
manual intervention.
LiSEC emphasised resourcesaving
machine solutions such as
the IGD-A and LiTEC Temperature
Control, which reduce energy and
water consumption, emissions,
and material usage. In 2025, LiSEC
received the EcoVadis bronze
medal for outstanding sustainability
solutions. Digital tools like the free
“Grafana” software help analyse
consumption data and optimise
prototypes.
In glass cutting, various efficiencyenhancing
approaches were
presented. A standout was the
new VSL-A double-bridge solution
featuring dynamic, self-learning load
optimisation.
In production planning, adaptive
optimisation was showcased: a
system that continuously analyses
data (orders, error messages,
downtimes) to dynamically create the
most efficient production plan while
meeting delivery deadlines despite
faults.
Exclusive factory visit to
Energy Glas
A highlight was the visit to Energy
Glas in Wolfhagen, where modern
LiSEC technology is used to
produce highly insulating glass.
The factory tour provided valuable
insights into automated processes.
Visitors, including Lothar Schleiner,
Operations Manager at Gethke Glas
Gronau GmbH, were impressed:
“I found the LSG glass cutting
on the VSL-A that processes glass
remnants of just 2 cm particularly
interesting—that’s really small. It
was also impressive to see the entire
organisation and automation of
production in process.”
The LiSEC Technology Days 2025
successfully demonstrated how
dynamic, innovative, and futureoriented
the glass industry is. With
expert presentations, new product
innovations, and an inspiring factory
tour, the event provided valuable
impetus for the future.

Laminated safety glass in
vogue: How researchers
are now recycling it
Addressing Sustainability Challenges And Enabling
Closed-Loop Reuse Of Glass & PVB Interlayers
A new four-stage process for separating laminated
safety glass and PVB film promises sustainable
recycling, reducing waste and enabling reuse in
architectural and industrial applications.
The topic of “safety glass”
seems relevant: Many
glass manufacturers are
strengthening their laminated
safety glass production, developing
thinner laminates to save raw
materials, energy and weight
in façades or advancing to the
highest safety classes. Bulletproof,
explosion protection, etc. appear
to be attracting more interest
in unpredictable, volatile times,
especially for system-relevant
infrastructure.
On behalf of glasstec, the author
asked Steffen Schäfer, Technical
Director at the German Flat Glass
Association (BF, Bundesverband
Flachglas) and Dr Miriam Schuster,
Head of the Glass and Polymers
Research Group at the Institute of
Structural Analysis and Design at the
Technical University of Darmstadt,
whether the “feeling” of increased
activity in the field of safety glass
is appropriate and what research
is being conducted in the field of
safety glass.
B+L Marktdaten GmbH has
been regularly analysing the
markets for windows and façades
in all global markets relevant to
German companies on behalf of the
Bundesverband Flachglas e.V. (BF) for
20 years. This includes monitoring
production volumes and sales of
the different “types” of float glass,
coated glass, toughened safety
glass, laminated safety glass and
insulating glass. Unsurprisingly, the
persistently low level of construction
activity is also having a negative
impact on sales in the glass industry.
The weakening construction sector
does not appear to be a singular
problem, but rather the result of an
economic, political and social crisis:
interest rate increases and higher
borrowing costs, high construction
costs due to rising energy prices,
building materials, transport and
tradesmen’s services – first due
to supply bottlenecks caused by
the COVID-19 pandemic, then
due to inflation. At the same time,
there is a shortage of skilled labour,
meaning that construction times
are being extended, costs are rising
and planning reliability is suffering.
Increased uncertainty is also included
in this due to political and geopolitical
developments that are difficult to
predict, insufficient state subsidies

The so-called “daisy effect” occurs when laminated safety glass is heated and indicates the beginning of bubble formation in the PVB. It is a key indicator for the optimum separation time.
In Figure 1-d and Figure 1-e (bottom row), you can also see that the film thickness has increased due to the daisy effect.
Figures: Maximilian Düwel, master’s thesis “Circular economy of laminated glass – investigations into the unmixed separation of glass and interlayer” (2024)
and the much-described basic
problem of strict German building
regulations and correspondingly long
approval processes. Finally, there is
the demographic and social change
with declining construction activity
in shrinking regions and increasing
requirements in growing urban
centres.
The German Flat Glass Association
provides an insight into the new
B+L figures on the market data for
windows and façades: “While all
types of glass have been affected by
declining sales since 2022, laminated
safety glass has stagnated at a
relatively high level, and sales are
even forecast to increase slightly
year-on-year in 2025. This is partly
due to a growing interest in safety
glass applications and the very active
work on DIN 18008 in recent years.
Fortunately, laminated safety glass
products are being favoured on the
market, especially in comparison to
basic glass”, explains Schäfer. One
of the major challenges facing the
flat glass industry – but also one of
its opportunities – is the increasing
demand for greater cost-effectiveness
and sustainability in safety glass: “The
glass industry is already making a lot
of progress here – manufacturers are
increasingly using renewable energy,
saving resources, developing products
with a lower carbon footprint and
effective ways to close their cycles.
They know that if they invest here,
they will create a good competitive
position for themselves in global
competition in the future.”
In progress: recycling
laminated safety glass
Sustainability is now also a
competitive advantage in economic
terms – but laminated safety glass
has been in a difficult position up
to now, as it is difficult to recycle
due to the film bond. Dr Miriam
Schuster, head of the Glass and
Polymers research group at the
Institute of Structural Analysis and
Design at the Technical University
of Darmstadt, reports: “We are
researching new ways to separate
and recycle laminated safety glass
by type, as it is now an integral part
of modern architecture, both in the
interior and the façade. While the
glass is theoretically fully recyclable
and PVB as a thermoplastic material
can also be recycled in principle, the
reality is sobering: The majority of old
laminated safety glass elements are
shredded and the glass fragments
are transferred to other industries, for
example for the production of glass
wool or hollow glass. The majority
of PVB residues are landfilled or
incinerated. The separation of
glass and interlayer has so far been
the biggest obstacle to a genuine
recycling or reuse cycle.”
A team of researchers led by
Dr Miriam Schuster and Prof Dr
Johannes Kuntsche from the
Department of Structural Engineering
at Darmstadt University of Applied
Sciences (h_da) has taken up this
challenge. At the “CircuClarity One”
conference, which took place at
glasstec 2024, they presented
preliminary investigations into
an innovative process that
allows laminated safety glass to
be separated by type without
glass breakage and without PVB
contamination. The aim is to enable
the reuse or closed-loop recycling

glass dust are obtained.

of the glass sheets as well as the
recycling of the PVB film.
Their separation method
is based on a four-stage
process:
;;
Heating: The glass samples are
heated to approx. 170-220°C
until the so-called “daisy
effect” (formation of bubbles
in the film) has fully formed.
;;
Mechanical separation: The
laminates are sheared and
pulled apart in a manually
guided device. Crucial:
The interlayer is separated
cohesively without damaging
the glass.
;;
Water treatment: Heat
treatment in water leads to
improved separation.
;;
Peeling: Finally, the remaining
intermediate layer is removed
mechanically.
Freshly produced samples of different
types of structure, different PVB
adhesion levels (high, medium),
different interlayer moisture contents
(0.32-0.66%), different lamination
processes – and, of course, aged
samples – were analysed. In addition,
different temperatures were analysed
for step 1. The result: The lower the
temperature is, the longer it takes
for the daisy effect to fully develop.
The adhesion of the PVB significantly
influences the separation process
during peeling in step four, but not
significantly during mechanical
separation in the second step.
The successful separation of LSG
enables closed-loop recycling as
cullet in float glass plants and even
reuse, e.g. glass sheets in secondary
applications. However, Schuster
believes that further steps are
required for successful, practical
and industrial implementation, such
as an in-depth analysis of the daisy
effect during the heating of LSG,
the industrial scaling of the heating
process or automated peeling,
the optimisation of the process
parameters and an evaluation of the
material quality after separation. A
corresponding research proposal
for further development has already
been submitted.
On 20-23 October 2026 in
Düsseldorf, glasstec 2026 will once
again be the central and impulsegiving
leading trade fair for the
exchange of ideas on future topics in
the glass industry. With the special
show “glass technology live” and the
associated “glasstec conference”, the
trade fair will bring together research,
manufacturers and users who want
to help shape the future. In this
context, visitors can also look forward
to a follow-up event on the topic of
circularity: “CircuClarity Two”.
