Coaching Football and Training Soldiers are very similar but also very,
very different.I know this because I was a 20 year career soldier and
have 50+ years experience with football as both a player and coach.
In 2007, I was a Coach with the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europa.
Unfortunately, 2007 was the last year of the League due to financial
reasons. I decided to stay in Germany for a while, to spend some time
with my son who was born here and works in the area as well.
In 2009 I went to see a Razorbacks practice. I had been contacted by a
number of teams but Ravensburg was close to Friedrichshafen where
I was living. I was surprised by how few players attended practice but
was impressed with Frank Kienzle who was a player, Headcoach and
Abteilungsleiter.
The defense needed help and that was where I coached. The Team got
better and we won the Oberliga that year and were promoted to the
Regionalliga South. I`ve been with the Team since then,
16 years. We have had good years, great years and
some not so good years. However, the structure of
the team has gotten better each season. In my
opinion, the single most important part of the
ifm-Razorbacks plan for success was the 2015
Recruitment of Coach Gilligan. The experience,
professionalism and character he brings is
invaluable on and off the field.
Above, I mentioned training Soldiers. Being
a Soldier and training Soldiers are two of the
things I am most proud about. After going to college
on a Football scholarship, I was not drafted into
the NFL but I did sign a contract with the Dallas Cowboys.
I suffered an injury in a preseason game and was released. About a
year and a half later I signed a contract to enter the U.S. Army. I have
much more pride in my contract to serve in the military and what I have
accomplished, than I ever had after signing to play in the NFL. If anyone
that reads this editorial ever served in the military, German, The United
States or any other democratic country,
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

JOHN GILLIGAN
COACH OF THE YEAR 2024!
John Gilligan, Head-Coach of the ifm Razorbacks Ravensburg,
has been honored by the AFVD—and deservedly so!
After a difficult start to the season, he led his
team to five consecutive victories, securing
second place in the GFL South and the club‘s
first-ever playoff appearance!
Respect for this strong performance, coach!

Facts about the opponent
The merger that led to today‘s Hurricanes was preceded by a long
history of football, in which the people who are still playing and
involved today were involved. At the end of the 1996 season, the
managers of both clubs, “Dillingen and Saarbrücken,” realized
that they could no longer improve on their own. In order to make
better use of their sporting and economic resources, a merger
was agreed upon. The name of the new club was chosen to reflect
the origins of football in Saarland. In 1999-2000, additional players
joined from the Friedrichsthal Vikings and Homburg Silverhawks,
which were no longer participating in competitive play.
Among the most important milestones are several championships
in the regional league, promotions to the GFL, and several playoff
appearances. Particularly noteworthy is the 2021 season, in which
the Hurricanes were runners-up in the GFL South and faced the
Dresden Monarchs in the playoff semifinals.
In the 2025 season, the Saarland Hurricanes are presenting themselves
as a team with a lot of potential. After a mixed start to the
season, they are currently in fourth place in the GFL South with a
record of 1-2.

The team has a dynamic offense led by quarterback
Jakob Parks, who impresses with his accurate passes
and quick decisions. The running game with running
back Benjamin Thompson provides additional danger
on the field.
While the defense makes a strong impression overall,
there are occasional weaknesses in covering against quick plays,
which leads to unnecessary points.

interview
with TIM MÜLLER
What originally drew you to American football – and why the tight end position, and now a
wide receiver?
Tim Müller: Like many others, I played soccer in my youth. At 15, I realized I was losing interest in
it. I was physically strong, and watching TV gave me the idea of trying football. I went to Ulm and
was immediately accepted there. Due
to my stature, I was used as a tight end.
I’ve been playing for the ifm Razorbacks
since 2022..
How would you describe your playing
style as a wide receiver – more speed,
technique, or physicality?
Tim Müller: I played as a tight end and am
now a receiver. I was the biggest and
heaviest tight end. My playing style is
physical and fast. The technique is still to
come, as I’ve only been playing receiver
since this year..
What does the ifm Razorbacks team
mean to you – and how do you experience
the team spirit?
Tim Müller: I feel very comfortable in the
club and on the team. It’s nice that most
of my teammates from last year are
back, as this creates a familiar atmosphere
and I don’t have to get to know
a completely new team again. The team
spirit is excellent, and we receivers get
along very well. Everyone supports each
other, and I also have a good relationship
with the organization. I feel very
well looked after in Ravensburg.
What do you do outside of fooball –
professionally, at university, or privately?
Tim Müller: I’m studying social work as part
of a dual study program.
13
So, I’m always at university for three months, and then I work for three months..
Oh, nice, you don’t hear that very often. I would have expected sports or business.
Tim Müller: Yes, that’s true, people are always surprised. Everyone thought of sports. I enjoy
working with children.
responsible task to follow in big footsteps.
Privately, I’m a family person. Besides studying and football,
I have a little time to spend with
friends and my girlfriend.
You answered in “Introduce Yourself” that you’re a
Los Angeles Rams fan. How come?
Tim Müller: Actually, I don’t have a particular favorite team.
I’m more interested in individual players and am especially
a fan of Justin Jefferson.
What do you say about our two previous games, unfortunately
losing narrowly?
Tim Müller: There are good and bad things we can take
with us. I was satisfied with the Schwäbisch Hall game,
including my performance. However, I’m unsure about
the Straubing game. Overall, we didn’t play badly and
can learn a lot for the next games.
Did you play against Muhlenberg College?
Tim Müller: Yes, only two drives. I was impressed by the
athleticism of these 18- to 21-year-olds. The American
sports system is just completely different. It was a great
experience playing against them and seeing their
progress.
What advice would you give to young players who
want to become wide receivers one day?
Tim müller: Give it a go! If you enjoy it, stick with it. Come
to training, everyone is welcome. Don’t just play football,
experience the best sport in the world!
Now the last question: What’s it like being on all the
posters as Tim Müller?
Tim müller: It was an unusual experience being on all the
posters. Nevertheless, it was interesting to be featured
on Instagram posts and to participate in the games. It’s a

united stars cheerleader
New Name - Even More Commitment
The “United Stars Cheerleaders,” or USC for short - many of you know these talented
girls and boys from the past few years. They enthusiastically cheer on the ifm
Razorbacks Ravensburg football teams and fire up the crowd at games both on the
sidelines and with their impressive performances on the field – always with passion,
which, along with their outstanding team spirit and cohesion, makes them unique..
The USC consists of a total of 76 athletes of
various age groups and offers all members
the opportunity to develop their skills in a
supportive and motivating environment.
They are divided into three age categories.
The youngest cheerleaders, our Starlights,
ages 6-10, learn basic techniques such as
simple stunts, jumps, acrobatic elements,
and teamwork through fun and games.
For many, this is their entry into the sport,
which not only develops physical fitness
but also builds confidence in their own
abilities.
The next oldest group, our Blue Stars, aged
11-15, often already have some cheerleading
experience and are now working on further
refining their skills. Cheerleading becomes
more challenging, including more diffcult
stunts, lifts, acrobatic elements, and precise
execution of choreography. They participate
in competitions and demonstrate
their skills. During this phase, emphasis is
also placed on discipline, cooperation, and
the development of a strong community.
A championship in Neu-Ulm is planned for
May 2026. Our juniors would be very happy
to receive any kind of support.
23
The Flying Stars, ages 16 and up, are the
most advanced group. The focus is on
professional techniques and challenging
performances. Their performances are
characterized by spectacular stunts, synchronicity,
and physical fitness. This isn’t
just about physical training, but also team
coordination and overcoming challenges.
The seniors regularly participate in national
competitions and proudly represent the
“United Stars Cheerleaders,” as they did this
year in Heidelberg at the state championships
in March. For the first time, a small
group of girls also competed, a so-called
group stunt, and, like the team, won 4th
place in their respective categories.
The “United Stars Cheerleaders” focus not
only on athletic ability, but also on fostering
team spirit, discipline, and personal
development. The cheerleaders learn
the importance of working together as a
team, supporting one another, and always
giving their best. Every year, we celebrate a
Christmas party with all the teams, and in
the spring, we host a barbecue. This means
there’s plenty to do off the mat as well.
Regardless of age, everyone is supported in training and competition preparation
so that everyone can achieve their own goals. A positive, respectful
environment is created in which members can develop both athletically and
personally.
The United Stars Cheerleaders are a vibrant and diverse group that motivates
young people of different ages to achieve peak performance. Through their
24
structured approach and strong sense of community, they offer participants not only
a sporting home, but also a place where team spirit, discipline, and the will to succeed
are fostered.
We are always happy to welcome new members; regardless of age or gender (boys are
also very welcome!). To continue to ensure all of this, we also need financial resources.
These come from our cheerleading fund. You can all contribute to this with a small donation
or at the cake stand in the stands. We sell all kinds of coffee, cakes, waffles, and
smoothies at every home game.
The cheerleading fund is used to finance, for example, championships, new ribbons,
training equipment, and uniforms. After several years, our seniors were able to purchase
new uniforms and shine in new splendor – literally.
Some also contributed to this with donations via a “GoFundMe” link last year. We
would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported us and helped
make our dream come true
– THANK YOU
Your United Stars Cheerleaders

Players, positions, and roles in defense
Defensive-Line:
They mainly defend the running game and
prevent running backs from gaining yardage.
Linebacker:
Middle Linebacker:
He is often the “quarterback of the defense,”
leading the defense and determining the
right coverage for each play.
Outside Linebacker:
They are responsible for pass rushing and stopping
running plays on the outside flanks.
Defensive back:
Cornerbacks:
They are the outside defenders and defend
against the wide receivers.
Safeties:
They are the last line of defense and are responsible
for defending passes and intercepting passes.
In American football,
the defense is the defending
team whose main goal is
to prevent the opposing offense
from scoring and to gain possession
of the ball. It tries to prevent
the offense from executing its
plays by stopping running and passing
plays and gaining possession
of the ball.
