Okuma shows numerous

floor inspection system. Its fast, reliable, accurate, and

offers the perfect solution for customers looking for a

manually driven CMM with an indexable probe. It comes

in four different sizes with Y axis travel up to 1,200mm.

While the Nakamura Tome WT15011 has two 24-tool

turrets, each capable of powered cutting at 6,000rpm, it

handles complex 4-axis operations and allows multiple

tools to work at once, cutting cycle times and boosting

Toxic US water data

EEnvironmental Protection Agency

(EPA) reveals that more than 158 million

Americans – nearly half the population

– are now exposed to toxic PFAS

compounds, widely known as ‘forever

chemicals’, in their drinking water.

While the red-flag findings –

highlighted by the Washington-based

Environmental Working Group (EWG)

– have triggered concern across the

United States, Swedish water tech and

beverage pioneer Bluewater warns that

this is not just an American crisis. The

same threats are unfolding in tap and

bottled water around the world.

“Let’s be clear: What’s happening in the

US is just the tip of the iceberg – it’s

a planetwide threat to public health,”

said Bengt Rittri, founder and CEO of

Bluewater. “From forever chemicals to

plastic particles, our drinking water is

under siege. The world can’t afford to

ignore this any longer.”

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl

substances, are synthetic chemicals

used in industrial applications and

consumer products like non-stick

cookware, firefighting foam, and food

packaging. They resist degradation and

accumulate in both the environment &

the human body, posing risks including:

event: DataPlus, and its Fuel Grade Indicator.

EMCO Wheaton’s DataPlus is an electronic

pump metering system that uses sophisticated

electronic control technology alongside proven

engineered components that are fitted onto a

road tanker. The DataPlus fuel metering system

is made up of several components including a

lightweight aluminium pneumatically actuated

manifold assembly with integral gas extractor,

liquid sensors, electronic counter/control unit,

meter, pump, printer and product transfer system.

The system’s gas extractor is mounted directly to

the underside of the manifold assembly, saving

space and weight. The manifold assembly also

features product transfer functionality, and

interlocked guard bars for safety when travelling

between deliveries. A delivery is initiated by

the litre counter, which receives signals from

a pulser unit connected directly to the

meter chamber. Once a compartment

is selected, product is drawn via the

manifold into the pump, through the

meter and delivered via a hosereel or

bulk line. Product contamination is

prevented by pneumatic interlocking.

The DataPlus system supports RS232

connectivity, facilitating the transfer of delivery

information such as date, time, product and

quantity values to a third party in cab tablet

system that will share live data regarding vehicle

position, on-board stock, delivery volumes

and pricing with the back-office transport

staff and accounts teams, enabling better

operational decision making and a reduction in

administration time and effort.

The DataPlus system can be fitted

to rigid type vehicles or semitrailers

(Urban Artics) alike.

EMCO Wheaton’s Fuel Grade

Indicator is strategically placed

above each manual API adapter

to offer unparalleled safety

and efficiency. Designed for

tank trucks, this indicator allows the operator

to check and set product grades for individual

compartments and features integrated

pneumatics which control the opening and

closing of the bottom tank valve (Footvalve) to

simplify the process, allowing seamless loading

and unloading in one location.

In traditional road tanker pneumatic systems, the

Footvalve controls are housed in a control cabinet

mounted remotely from the API loading envelope.

Controlling the Footvalve from the Grade Indicator

which is fitted adjacent to each respective API

valve allows the driver to immediately close the

appropriate Footvalve in the event of a loading

arm or unloading hose coupling problem. The

convenience of having the Footvalve control at

the API valve gives more confidence in controlling

deliveries by reducing the chance of error due to

better viability and reduced drive movement. An

integrated visual indicator gives clear indication

of the Footvalve status.

Removing hazardous

PFAS chemicals from

drinking water

he chemicals known as PFAS are

Tconsidered a severe threat to human

health. Among other things, they can

cause liver damage, cancer, & hormonal

disorders. Researchers at the Technical

University of Munich (TUM) have now

developed a new, efficient method

of filtering these substances out of

drinking water. They rely on so-called

metal-organic framework compounds,

which work much better than the

materials commonly used to date. Even

extremely low concentrations of PFAS in

the water can still be captured.

The team led by Nebojša Ilić from the

TUM Chair of Urban Water Systems

Engineering and Prof. Soumya

Mukherjee, a former Alexander von

Humboldt postdoctoral researcher

at the TUM Chair of Inorganic and

Organometallic Chemistry during

the study period and now Assistant

Professor of Materials Chemistry at

the University of Limerick, identified

water-stable metal-organic framework

compounds made of zirconium

carboxylate as particularly effective

PFAS filters. The bespoke class of

materials is characterised by the

adaptable pore sizes and surface

chemistry. The materials are waterresistant

and highly electrostatically

charged. By specifically designing the

structures and combining them with

polymers, the filter capacity has been

significantly improved compared

to materials already in use, such as

activated carbon and special resins.

However, it will be some time before

this new filter material is adopted at

large scale in waterworks. The newly

discovered principle would have to

be implemented with sustainably

available, inexpensive materials that are

safe in every respect. This will require

considerable further research and

engineering solutions.

PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl

substances, have become a major

concern for regulators and the

water industry, which means it will now

impact on your business. Known as ‘forever

chemicals’ due to their persistence in the

environment, PFAS pose complex challenges

What Is PFAS and why should you care?

PFAS are a group of thousands of synthetic

chemicals used for their heat resistance, water

repellency, and non-stick properties. They are

found in everyday products, including cleaning

products, water-resistant fabrics (umbrellas,

raincoats), grease-resistant paper, nonstick

cookware, personal care products, (shampoo,

dental floss, nail polish, eye makeup), stainresistant

coatings (carpets, upholstery, fabrics)

and electronics.

While PFAS make products more durable, they

also resist natural breakdown. Once discharged

to trade effluent, sewer or foul drains and

subsequently released into the environment,

often through wastewater discharge they can

easily contaminate groundwater, surface water,

and soil.

More importantly, due to the bioaccumulation

effect, PFAS exposure has been linked to serious

health concerns, including developmental issues,

immune system disruption, and certain cancers.

For industrial operators, this presents issues with

regulatory compliance, clean up, environmental

responsibility and competitiveness challenges.

What’s the problem for industry?

In the UK and across Europe, regulatory pressure

is mounting. The Environment Agency has

increased monitoring of industrial discharges

for PFAS compounds, and tighter discharge

limits are anticipated under evolving UK REACH,

water and environmental legislation. Water

companies are now seriously reviewing discharge

consents and analysing effluent streams for PFAS

contamination.

Machining

New UNISIG operating system streamlines the

human-robot interface

epresenting a leap forward in programming,

RUNISIG’s next-generation operating system further

improves the human-robot interface and slashes

programming times.

The new operating system, featured on UNISIG’s

UNE6-2i-750-CR small-diameter gundrilling machine,

streamlines the setup of dozens of different part

handling combinations to reduce new part setup times

by 80% or more. The system significantly improves

the communication between the machine’s human

machine interface (HMI) and the robotic controller.

This enables centralised data storage or a single source

of truth – the coding and data for the gundrilling

operation and the program for the part handling are

stored together for ease of recall.

Because it works within a parametric programming

environment, the new operating system automatically

adjusts its parameters to any dimensional part

changes, without the need to manually calculate and

enter in new parameters. Such intelligence eliminates

the need to start over and create entirely new and

independent programs, while greatly simplifying and

shortening programming times for part families.

The UNE6-2i-750-CR gundrilling machine with

integrated robot ships with a handheld programming

console/teach pendant connected to the machine.

Prior to the use of parametric programming, all part

handling operations were pre-programmed using the

& store all machine & robotic

parameters in the machine

HMI. This allows for a more

centralised user experience and

greatly reduces the depth of

robotic experience required.

The machine HMI has built-in

parametric selection guides,

allowing users to toggle

between data entry and the

programming guides. Each

data value, and its function,

are graphically displayed in the

on-screen programming guide.

This prevents the guide from

being misplaced and makes it available at all times,

which is especially advantageous when periodically

adding new parts involving large time gaps between

them.

The UNE6-2i-750-CR with integrated robotic

automation also features interchangeable part trays.

The robot services both the machine’s spindles and

accommodates drilling of different diameters from

each end.

The optional lantern chuck system on this machine

model allows workpiece loading into the rear of an

automatic collet chuck to ensure accurate workholding,

especially for uniquely shaped workpieces.

UNISIG’s UNE6 Series of precision gundrilling machines

generate holes from 0.8mm to 6.0mm (0.03” to

0.24”) in even the most challenging of materials.
