Tradespeople, contractors, nominations wanted

Nominate a deserving veteran for home improvement project eligibility

SLOANE’S

SUMMER VACATION

The first adventure of summer

was glow in the dark golf. We

watched loud fireworks. The

next day we went to the Candle

Mercantile. You pick your favorite

sents to use for your candle or

difuser. We have gone to Mars

and Dip In The Bay. I went to

Manitowish Waters. We saw

the Skiing Skeeters. They were

amazing! I finished Opti Sailing

Camp and made youth teachers.

Maddie and Cam came to visit.

My sister and I went to Covenant

Harbor and rode the banana boat.

Soon I will see my new cousin,

and go to the demolition derby!

In the first year of the proram,

launched last summer,

ore than $200,000 worth of

ome improvement projects

ere awarded to 30 of the

Actually, due to word of

and community support,

aid Dawn Bremer, owner

nd president of the McHeny-based

Bremer Team.

“None of this would have

ncredible contractors who

tepped up time after time

hen I asked,” Bremer said.

They didn’t just repair

Bremer said the first year’s

fforts were greatly supportd

by Home Depot. She sinled

out Geri Quirk-Blanken,

anager of the Volo Home

epot store, and Sarah Stiler,

manager of the McHenry

store, for high praise.

“Without them, this would

not have happened,” she said.

Quirk-Blanken said the

Home Depot Foundation and

Team Depot members from

stores within the chain’s

are on board to support

the coming year’s projects.

“We really enjoy giving

Michael Adams, a Bremer

Team agent who also is a

U.S. Marine veteran, stopped

by the home of U.S. Army

Sgt. Retired Johnathan Draper

in Lakemoor July 31 to

check out Draper’s recently

completed project. Lennar

homebuilders removed

and replaced a dilapidated,

unsafe back deck, adding a

wide ramp for the disabled

vet.

“Talking to all of these

veterans, especially the ones

who have received a home

improvement project and

hearing their feedback, it’s

the motivation to keep me

pushing with Dawn and the

rest of the team to do this

again and again and to give

back to this community that I

care so much about,” Adams

said. “I’m incredibly excited

for the launch of our second

year.”

Draper, who lives in

Lakemoor with his youngest

daughter, Evie, and their

pet dog, said he was overwhelmed

by the help he was

provided. It included not only

the deck and ramp, but also

gated fencing so that he could

have a safe running spot for

the family’s beloved Staffordshire

Labrador, Willow.

And Lennar didn’t stop there,

Draper said.

“They also installed landscaping,”

said Draper, a

36-year-old who served from

2007 to 2011. “They put in

bushes and flowers all around

the outside of the deck and inside

the fence. I’m not versed

on plants. I don’t know what

they are, but they are beautiful.”

Bremer said what was

done for Draper is one of the

many examples of generosity

Labor Day traffic safety

campaign underway

Lake County participating

with 200-plus other agencies

The Lake County Sheriff’s

Office is one of over 200 law

enforcement agencies across

Illinois participating in the

statewide “Drive Sober or Get

Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get

a DUI,” and “Click It or Ticket”

campaigns this Labor Day.

From Aug. 15 through

Sept. 2, deputies will be focused

on stopping impaired

driving and reducing other

dangerous driving behaviors.

Deputies will also be enforcing

seat belt laws as part of

the “Click It or Ticket” initiative.

Buckling up is the most

effective way to prevent serious

injury or death in a crash.

Everyone in the vehicle – front

seat or back – should be properly

buckled, every trip.

In addition to alcohol, officers

will be on the lookout

for drivers impaired by cannabis

and other drugs. Messages

like “Drive Sober or

Get Pulled Over” and “Drive

High Get a DUI” are part of

a statewide education and enforcement

effort aimed at saving

lives.

This local effort is part of

a larger statewide campaign

supported by the Illinois Department

of Transportation,

which administers the “Drive

Sober or Get Pulled Over”

and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns

with federal highway

safety funds.

The initiative is reinforced

by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game”

media campaign running

across radio, TV and digital

platforms to highlight the

deadly consequences of impaired

driving.

Help the holiday spirit come early

Jeeps on the Run Toys for Tots Run registration now open

By Cynthia Wolf

CONTRIBUTOR

You don’t have to be Buddy

the Elf to radiate a little early

Christmas spirit.

You need only to visit jeepsontherun.com,

where registration

is now open for the 13th

annual Jeeps on the Run Toys

for Tots Run and after-party

scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 7.

For $30 per Jeep and $5 per

after-party ticket (no Jeep ownership

required to attend the

after-party), registrants receive

the gift of knowing they’ll place

smiles on kids’ faces this holiday

season. Event organizers

coordinate with U.S. Marines

Toys for Tots to benefit families

in Lake and McHenry counties,

with more than 50,000 families

supported over the past 12 years.

Cash donations buy additional

toys after the run, said

Mike Missak, president of

Jeeps on the Run. The organization

has raised more than $2

million in cash and toys since

2013, giving primarily to Toys

for Tots but also to charities

including the American Cancer

Society and the American

Heart Association, as well as

area food pantries.

Jeeps registered for the 2025

event will gather once again at

the location of event title sponsor

Ray Chrysler Dodge Jeep

Ram in Fox Lake and travel

to the Marriott Lincolnshire

Resort in Lincolnshire, where

semi-tractor trailers will await

participants’ toy donations. The

decorated Jeep procession is

capped at 500.

“We typically sell out, so

register those Jeeps ASAP,”

Missak said, adding that 2025

is shaping up to prove exceptionally

exciting. “Not only do

we have a new, $46,375 Jeep

Gladiator to raffle off, but our

after-party crew also is looking

to add some impressive new

interactive activities for all who

attend.”

While activities details, as

well as the live band selection,

are still coming together, one

ever-popular VIP’s presence is

definitely a lock. “Santa will

be there,” Missak said. “We

pinned that down before we

said goodbye to him last year.”

Ray Chrysler Dodge Jeep

Ram president and dealer principal

Ray Scarpelli Jr., who

has donated roughly $300,000

to Jeeps on the Run in the form

of new Jeeps for raffling and

other support, said he is looking

forward to another successful

event.

“For a lot of folks, the Toys

for Tots Run equates with the

launch of the holiday season,”

Scarpelli said. “Families have

Special Investigations

Group arrests

cocaine dealer

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office

Special Investigations Group, a

High Intensity Drug Trafficking

Area funded task force, concluded

an investigation that resulted in the

arrest of a Beach Park woman for

dealing drugs, including sales that

occurred within 500 feet of a middle

school.

This year, SIG detectives learned

Karla L. Rangel-Tirado, 30, of the

37800 block of North Metropolitan

Avenue, Beach Park, was actively trafficking narcotics

in the area. During the investigation, detectives

conducted multiple undercover controlled purchases of

cocaine from Rangel-Tirado. Two of the transactions

took place within 500 feet of a Middle School in

Waukegan.

On Aug. 11, SIG detectives conducted a traffic stop

and took Rangel-Tirado into custody without incident.

After reviewing the case, the Lake County State’s

Attorney’s Office approved the following charges:

• Two counts of Delivery of a Controlled Substance

within 500 feet of a school (Class X felonies)

• Two counts of Delivery of a Controlled Substance

(Class 1 felonies)

• Two counts of Unlawful Possession of a

Controlled Substance (Class 4 felonies)

“Whether it’s a large-scale trafficking operation

or an individual dealer targeting our communities,

our Special Investigations Group is committed to

disrupting the sale of dangerous drugs,” said Sheriff

John D. Idleburg.

“Selling cocaine near a school is especially

egregious, and I commend our detectives for their

diligent work to keep our neighborhoods safe,”

Idleburg added.

Rangel-Tirado remains held in the Lake County Jail

pending an initial court hearing.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless

proven guilty in a court of law.

Man sentenced to 16 years

for drug-induced homicides

McHenry County State’s

Attorney Randi Freese announces

that on Aug. 11,

Raynardo O. Gonzalez, 54, of

Chicago, Ill., was sentenced

to a total of 16 years in the Illinois

Department of Corrections

by the Honorable Tiffany

Davis.

Gonzalez entered a negotiated

plea to two counts of

Drug-Induced Homicide, a

Class X felony, where he accepted

responsibility for his

act of conducting a heroin

transaction in Chicago that

resulted in the fatal overdose

deaths of two Harvard residents.

In August of 2022, the Harvard

Police began an investigation

after two next door

neighbors in a residential

neighborhood both suffered

on the same

day. Gonzalez

had been

a long-time

friend of

the first victim.

The investigation

revealed

that the first

Raynardo O.

Gonzalez

victim had traveled from his

home in Harvard to meet

Gonzalez in Chicago to purchase

heroin for both himself

and his neighbor.

Following the transaction,

that victim immediately drove

back to Harvard and gave his

neighbor his portion of the

purchased heroin. Both men

ingested the heroin within

their respective homes, which

resulted in their deaths. With

input and agreement of both

victims’ families, Gonzalez

was sentenced to a ten (10)

year prison sentence on Count

1 to run consecutive to six (6)

years on Count 2 for a total

sentence of sixteen (16) years

imprisonment.

Truth-in-Sentencing will

require that Gonzalez serve

75 percent of his sentence

prior to release from custody.

Following that prison sentence,

he will be placed on

a term of Mandatory Supervised

Release for 18 months.

State’s Attorney Freese is

grateful for the extensive efforts

of Sergeant Eric See of

the Harvard Police Department

and the collaborative

work with FBI Special Agent

Jeremy Bauer of the Chicago

Field Office of the Cellular

Analysis Survey Team.

Freese is proud of the work

that the McHenry County

State’s Attorney’s Office

does in partnership with law

enforcement to prosecute

overdose deaths in McHenry

County. She emphasized that,

“all drug dealers who sell

death to McHenry County

residents will be investigated

and prosecuted, regardless of

whether or not they physically

set foot in McHenry County.”

This case was successfully

prosecuted by Chief of Staff

Ashley Romito and Assistant

State’s Attorney Shelby Page

with the important assistance

of State’s Attorney’s Office

Texas GOP chairman: Illinois a winnable ‘purple state’

Republicans recruiting candidates and trying to hone message

By Peter Hancock

CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS

The chairman of the Texas

Republican Party said last

week that he thinks Illinois

is winnable for the GOP in

2026, despite the party’s lack

of success in recent elections.

Speaking to a joint meeting

of the Illinois party’s state

central committee and county

chairs, Abraham George

pointed to the fact that Donald

Trump won 43.5 percent of

the vote in Illinois in the 2024

presidential election. That

was three points more than

he received in 2020, when

he lost his first reelection bid

to Democrat Joe Biden, and

nearly five points more than

he received in his first presidential

run in 2016.

The closer margins, however,

were mostly due to

fewer votes for Democratic

candidate Kamala Harris, as

Trump improved his vote total

by just over 2,000 from 2020

to 2024.

“That’s not a blue state

anymore. That’s a purple

state,” George said. “This

state can flip to a Republican

pretty fast.”

The meeting of party officials

last week was a precursor

to the annual Republican

Day festivities at the Illinois

State Fair, an event where

the party showcases its major

candidates for the next round

of elections and tries to generate

enthusiasm among its core

base of voters.

Gerrymandering battle

George was invited to

speak to the group largely because

of the ongoing controversy

in his home state over

congressional redistricting, a

controversy that has spilled

over into Illinois politics.

The Texas Legislature is

currently meeting in a special

session to consider several

issues, including relief for

victims of deadly floods that

struck the state in July.

In addition, at Trump’s

request, the Republican-controlled

Legislature is also

considering a mid-decade

congressional redistricting

plan that is designed to give

the GOP at least five additional

seats. That would raise their

total to at least 30 out of the

state’s 38-seat delegation.

To prevent the Texas House

from voting on that plan, dozens

of Democratic lawmakers

fled the state on Aug. 3, with

many of them lodging in Illinois.

That has prevented the

Texas House from mustering

the two-thirds quorum required

for it to do business.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker,

a Democrat, has openly welcomed

the Texas lawmakers

to stay here. He has also suggested

that if Texas Republicans

follow through with their

redistricting plans, Democratic-led

states like Illinois and

California could retaliate by

redrawing their own maps in

favor of Democrats.

But George criticized the

outrage that Pritzker has

shown over the efforts in Texas,

given how heavily gerrymandered

the Illinois maps already

are. He noted that while

Trump won 43 percent of the

vote in 2024, Republicans

hold only three, or 18 percent,

of the state’s 17 congressional

seats.

“You know, Democrats,

they don’t hate gerrymandering.

They hate losing,”

George told the Illinois Republicans.

“Because if you

haven’t looked at your map,

they love gerrymandering.

I was looking at the map of

Illinois and the congressional

seats. I’m like, I don’t think

this is possible in a computer

system.”

Recruiting candidates

Despite the optimism expressed

last week, Republicans

have been slow to announce

runs for some of the

higher-level offices that will

be up for election in 2026.

Those include races for governor

and all other state constitutional

offices, all 17 congressional

seats and a U.S.

Senate seat being vacated this

year by the state’s senior senator,

Dick Durbin.

One Republican who has

decided to run is former state

party chairman Don Tracy, a

Springfield attorney, who has

announced he intends to run

for Durbin’s U.S. Senate seat.

Speaking to reporters last

week, he conceded it is a

“daunting task” for a Republican

to run for any statewide

office in Illinois, given the

Democrats’ significant fundraising

advantage.

“They usually outspend

us three-to-one, five-to-one,

10-to-one,” he said. “I think I

can beat them if it’s only fiveto-one.

If it’s 10-to-one or

20-to-one, it will be a bigger

challenge.”

But fundraising isn’t the

only challenge facing Republicans

in a statewide race.

They also face the reality

that in recent statewide races,

Democrats have consistently

outpolled Republicans

in Illinois by roughly a 55%

to 45% margin. That means

to be considered viable, any

given Republican needs to

attract about 6 percentage

points more than GOP candidates

have typically gotten in

recent elections. Based on the

last race for a U.S. Senate seat

in 2022, that would amount to

about 246,000 votes.

Asked how he intends to

attract those votes, Tracy

said, “by running a good campaign,

by having a big team,

by taking advantage of the

Pollination issues add to crop concerns

By Daniel Grant

Recent rounds of “million-dollar

rains” helped crops

in many areas deal with the

stress of heat indices in excess

of 100 degrees.

But the crops are far from

poor pollination to disease

pressure threaten to take the top

“We’re really fortunate. We

got 3 to 4 inches (of rain) right

before the latest heat wave,”

Ryan Gentle, agronomy manager

for Wyffels Hybrids, told

DeLoss Jahnke of the RFD Radio

Network.

“We’d be in a lot worse

shape if we didn’t get that,” he

said. “We’ve got good (yield)

potential, but we need a few

more showers through August.”

Pollination issues pop up

One issue that’s caught

a lot of farmers off guard is

poor pollination in some fields

caused by tight tassel wrap.

The relatively new phenomenon

is caused during excessive

growth of the corn plant when

not many branches are available

to pop the last leaf open

during pollination, so a small

portion of the tassel must pollinate

the whole ear.

“It’s a factor of a few different

things from what we’ve

been seeing,” said Gentle, who

hasn’t found the issue yet in

Wyffels hybrids. “It’s part

environmental, genetics and

what the industry has selected

for.”

Large corn tassels can produce

up to 4 million pollen

grains while even “normal”

sized tassels produce up to

2 million pollen grains. But

it takes about only 1,000 to

fertilize an ear, so the seed

industry subsequently selected

genetics over the years for

corn that doesn’t use as much

energy to produce the pollen

grains, according to Gentle.

But stress from extreme

heat this year made it more difficult

for the smaller tassels to

emerge in some fields, which

led to pollination issues. The

average overnight temperatures

from June 15 through

July 15 were the fifth hottest

for that 30-day stretch in more

than a century, Gentle reported.

“In genetics and hybrids

that aren’t affected, we’ve got

pretty normal pollination out

there,” Gentle said. “But, in

some fields I’ve looked at I’ve

seen anywhere from 10 to 40

percent of ears affected. And

of those affected, I’ve seen

anywhere from 10 percent of

kernels missing to up to 50

percent.

“If you’re worried, call

your seed rep and get out and

look,” he said. “Even if you

take 10-15 percent off the top

of 240-250-bushel corn, that

adds up really fast.”

Jeff Guilander, FarmWeek

crop watcher from Jersey

County, reported problems

with tight tassel wrap in his

area.

“Green snap, twisted tassels

and husks that are too tight

around the ear seem to be of

concern,” Guilander said. “It

makes me wonder about the record

for corn) USDA is expecting.”

Crop diseases

on the move

Meanwhile, farmers continue

to apply fungicides as the

heat and humidity in July was

a good recipe for the spread

of crop diseases. Tar spot and

southern rust have already been

confirmed at numerous locations

around the state.

“In my area, gray leaf spot

is the trigger for many of the

fungicide applications,” Gentle

said. “And we’ve also had reports

of southern rust. It blows

up on storms, and we’ve had

plenty of those.”

Tar spot typically spreads

when conditions are humid

and cool, so cooler weather to

start August could be something

to watch.

CropWatchers Daniel Herriott,

Champaign County, and

Josh Sullivan, Christian County,

both reported farmers are using

more drones in their areas

to apply fungicides this year

than in the past.

“This year, (the use of

drones) has certainly picked

up significantly,” Herriott told

RFD’s Jim Taylor. “We’re

very fortunate. We’ve had

pretty good moisture, so the

crops are handling the stress

nicely so far.”
