Vase of Hope in Victoria Gardens, Truro Enjoying the Cornish Views

Hello & welcome!

The universe works in mysterious and beautiful ways. Recently,

I was touched to hear from a reader who was overjoyed

to see The Great Invocation featured in our pages (see p15).

It’s moments like this that remind me how words can connect

and inspire us across time and space.

I hope your summer has been kind to you - and here’s to the

joy of an Indian Summer in September.

Over these past weeks, I’ve had something of an epiphany.

I’ve changed my relationship with time. Instead of feeling as

though I never have enough of it, I now set realistic goals

and trust there is time for everything that truly matters. It’s

remarkable how shifting your mindset can shift your reality -

what you think and project, you truly do receive.

One of my daily joys this summer has been greeting the

morning sun, offering a moment of thanks for its unconditional

light, warmth, and energy. In return, my garden has blessed

me with a bountiful harvest - including tomatoes that finally

ripened into beauties after last year’s stubbornly green crop!

I’ve even had enough spinach to share at the Truro Homeless

Action Group’s Friday breakfasts.

If you’ve never tried growing your own food, I encourage you

to start - no garden required. A sunny windowsill and a little

passion can produce something wonderful.

And if you’re at that exciting stage of choosing a senior school

for your child, don’t miss the open days listed on p12.

Here’s to a September filled with gratitude, growth, and

golden light.

Cornwall’s Voice -

an interview with

Deputy Mayor

This summer, Truro Together caught

up with Loic Rich, recently elected to

both Truro City Council and Cornwall

Council, and now serving as Truro’s

Deputy Mayor.

Alongside supporting Mayor Chris Wells,

Loic also holds a Cornwall Council Cabinet

position as an Independent, with a portfolio

covering environment and climate change.

This includes public rights of way, waste and

recycling, crematoria, the Carbon Neutral

Cornwall team, nature recovery, and the

maritime department.

Loic is passionate about promoting

Cornwall’s identity and culture within the UK,

celebrating its Celtic heritage and rich history.

“Cornishness, to me, is about community,

openness, and connection - not just where

your family comes from, but how you

identify and contribute to the place you live,”

he says.

One of his proudest ongoing projects is the

Truro Loops - a community-led vision to create

safe, accessible walking and cycling routes

linking Truro with its stunning surrounding

countryside. The project includes plans for

a new bridge, redesigned as a swing bridge

to keep it within budget. Loic believes these

routes will allow residents and visitors to

connect more deeply with nature, improving

wellbeing while offering a free and sustainable

way to enjoy Cornwall’s beauty.

Loic windfoiling on River Truro

Housing is another priority. Loic highlights the

importance of developments that provide

affordable homes for local people, along with

spaces that encourage community life.

Beyond the council chamber, Loic is an

advocate for healthy, active living. A keen

wingfoiler and cyclist, he also enjoys

meditation and believes strongly in the mental

and physical benefits of connecting with

nature.

As he puts it: “We’re surrounded by an

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Within

minutes, you can be immersed in wildlife

and fresh air - we need to make it easier for

everyone to enjoy that.”

Truro Rangers

words by Anna Cormie -

Assistant Countryside Ranger

Our most common bird of prey, buzzards

(Buteo buteo) can be found perched on

fences and lampposts, or hovering over fields

and woodlands – a great place to spot them

is in the Northern Meadows of Coosebean

Woodland.

They hunt rodents, rabbits and birds, and can even

be spotted on the ground in search of earthworms!

Buzzards will also scavenge carrion (dead animals)

such as roadkill, this is a hugely important part of the

ecosystem. Without scavengers such as buzzards,

we would have a huge problem where dead

animals would not be cleared up, making scavengers

important animals to look after.

These impressive birds have a wingspan of between

113-128cm and are 51-57cm tall, though they like

to sit in a hunched position. They can vary in colour

from dark brown all over to far paler variations, but

all buzzards have dark wingtips and a finely-striped

tail.

They haven’t always been our most common bird

of prey, by the mid-20th century buzzards had

disappeared from most of the UK due to the use

of pesticides and persecution by gamekeepers. To

help these stunning birds, legal protections were put

in place and the amount of pesticides used reduced

to decrease the threats buzzards faced. Because of

this, the number of buzzards in the UK has more than

quadrupled since 1970 and there may now be more

than 70,000 breeding pairs across the country!

This shows that with care and protection, we can

help recover many species that are disappearing

from our landscapes, and help to protect the

delicate ecosystem that we all rely on.

born as part of Heligan’s pioneering reintroduction

programme. Their names were chosen by pupils at

Mevagissey and Gorran primary schools after lively

assemblies with Heligan’s wildlife experts.

Heligan beaver kits born earlier this year

More than 150 name ideas were submitted – from the

cute and clever (“Woody,” “Chip”) to the downright

hilarious (“Chewbarka,” “Justin Beaver”). In the end,

the judges picked Lerryn, suggested by five-year-old

Lerryn from Mevagissey, meaning “waters” or “flood”

in Cornish, and Willow, proposed by seven-year-old

Ada from Gorran, linking to Heligan’s name in Cornish

and the trees beavers love to munch.

Jessica Robinson, Heligan’s Learning Engagement

Lead, said: “These names celebrate our heritage and

the beavers’ beautiful habitat. It’s been wonderful

to involve so many children in understanding their

importance to our ecosystem.”

Proud parents Twiggy and Byrti were introduced in

2023 and 2024 as part of a national effort to bring

back this keystone species after 400 years of absence.

Their presence is already helping boost biodiversity

and restore balance to the landscape.

GARDENING

Autumn Glow: 5 essential September &

October gardening tips

As the days shorten and a crispness

fills the air, it’s time to prepare your

garden for the cooler months ahead

while celebrating the final harvest. To

get your garden ready for autumn and

beyond, here are five essential tips:

Celebrate the Harvest: Now is the time to

gather in the last of your summer bounty.

Harvest pumpkins, squash, and maincrop

potatoes before the first frost hits, ensuring

your hard work doesn’t go to waste.

Plant for Spring Colour: Start thinking ahead!

September and October are the perfect

months to plant spring-flowering bulbs like

daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths. This will

reward you with a vibrant display next year.

Tackle Your Tidying: Keep on top of fallen

leaves by raking them from your lawn and

borders. You can use this organic matter to

create leaf mould, a fantastic soil improver for

next season.

Tidy and Prune: Cut back old foliage from

summer perennials and deadhead late-blooming

flowers to keep your garden looking neat.

However, leave some seed heads for the birds

to enjoy.

Look After Your Soil: Don’t leave your soil

bare! Cover it with a generous layer of mulch

or sow a green manure to protect it from winter

weather, enrich it with nutrients and suppress

weeds.

Lawn Care: Give your lawn one last mow with

the blades set high to leave the grass slightly

longer for winter. You can also aerate and

scarify your lawn now to improve drainage and

get it ready for spring.

COMMUNITY NEWS

A message of

peace for Truro

and beyond

In the summer issue of Truro Together, the

Great Invocation was shared - a timeless

World Peace Prayer ** that speaks of

unity and transformation, envisioning a

world free from war and harm.

This universal call to the divine energies of Light, Love,

and Purpose seeks to uplift humanity and bring peace

to the Earth.

Following publication, the publisher was touched to

receive a call from a local woman who has been faithfully

reciting the Great Invocation since 1988. Inspired by her

dedication, the publisher began reciting the prayer - not

only as a blessing for the Earth but also with a special

focus on Cornwall and the Truro community.

It is believed that each of us can contribute to healing

our world. By creating thought-forms of peace and

cultivating loving kindness towards others and ourselves,

we can gradually bring about positive change. Rather

The Great Invocation

than becoming

consumed by

discussions of war

or idle speculation

about leaders’ actions,

we can instead envision

those in power seeing

the light, laying down

weapons, and fostering

reconciliation, peace,

and forgiveness.

Acknowledging that

all people have made mistakes (including ourselves),

the message encourages growth, understanding,

and compassion. Through daily acts of kindness,

mindful words, and a shared vision for harmony, the

seeds of a more peaceful future can take root.

The Great Invocation remains a reminder that peace

begins within, and when nurtured collectively, it

can radiate outward - bringing healing to Truro, to

Cornwall, and to the world.

Note from the Publisher: Join me and recite the

Great Invocation at 9:27 am on Mondays during

the month of September. Recite facing outside, my

favourite place is Victoria Gardens, Truro.

Truro BID delivers events, projects

We hope that you have enjoyed the summer

and are getting ready for the autumn. As you

may know, Truro BID aims to increase footfall

into the city to support the High Street. One

of the ways that we do this is to organise and

support events throughout the year.

In June, we brought Children’s Day to the

city for the eighth year. Families enjoyed lots

of mostly free entertainment and activities

including mountain bike stunt shows, dance

performances and have a-go sessions, along

with in-store activities and offers at some

of Truro’s shops and eateries. New for this

year, we had more activity across the city

including market stalls, and Viking and

Cosplay Characters in Pydar St.

On Sunday 6th July, we held the third Truro

unique opportunity to see a wide variety of

cherished classic and vintage vehicles across

This is because Christmas Eve falls on a

As you may have read, due to financial

One of his hopes is to offer a prescription delivery

Crematorium in Camborne provides a lovely

setting with views over the valley; and Glynn Valley

Crematorium in Bodmin is particularly popular for

the train enthusiast. Local burial options include

traditional burials in public or parish cemeteries or

churchyards, woodland burials in managed natural

habitats, or the option of natural burials at Penmount

Crematorium’s wildflower meadow. Families may have

a service prior to the burial at a location of their choice,

or opt for a simple graveside service.

Decisions need to be made in a timely fashion and

families are expertly guided through a variety of

options.

From choosing the coffin and deciding whether

to have atraditional oak, wicker and other

environmentally conscious design, to a personal

bespoke picture or coloured coffin to reflect the

different personalities of those in their care.

Helping to organise service sheets, newspaper

announcements, floral tributes, and the option to

collect memorial donations for a chosen charity,

including via Memory Giving, an online secure

platform.

Supporting families to engage a minister or celebrant

to lead the service, depending on whether they

prefer a religious or non-religious service, with some

families even conducting the service themselves

for a more personal farewell.

Guiding the families with particular music or readings,

or suggesting thoughtful touches such as photo

tributes or live-streaming options to allow people

near and far to feel part of the occasion.

If a cremation is chosen, there are also decisions

to be made around ashes - whether they are

returned in a chosen urn, scattered in a garden of

remembrance, or a small amount may be kept in a

piece of jewellery as a keepsake.

Their message is clear: “Nothing is too much trouble.

No two lives are the same, so no two goodbyes

should be either. We’re here to help families make it

personal and meaningful.”

COMMUNITY NEWS

New Community

Hub at to open

September will see the opening of the

Lifehouse Community Hub next to All Saints

Highertown church in Truro.

This brand new building replaces the tired old hall

and facilities which have been used by so many

community groups and organisations over the

years. It will be a green building with underfloor

heating throughout powered by air source heat

pumps running on solar panels and battery

storage, supplemented by renewable electricity

from the grid.

The Lifehouse comprises a large community hall

with full audio-visual facilities, a comfortable and

welcoming café for people to meet or rest, a

commercial kitchen, two meeting rooms, toilets and

a Changing Places room to give greater accessibility

for those in our community who are disabled. A

sensory garden is also planned with quiet spaces

for reflection and to aid healing and wellbeing.

The building has been designed to be welcoming,

light and airy, and accessible to all, with particular

consideration for the neuro-diverse.

The vision for the Lifehouse is to provide a point

of connection, support and friendship – a safe

haven that increases social cohesion - and to enable

community groups and organisations to deliver

classes or programmes that enrich and improve

people’s physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

The name originates from a verse in the bible that

Jesus has come to bring life, and life in abundance.

The Lifehouse will be open to everyone, so do

drop in and see the lovely facilities once we open

in mid-September. If you are an individual or an

organisation interested in hiring any of the spaces,

details can be obtained by contacting our Lifehouse

Administrator, whose details are below. We look

forward to welcoming you!

COMMUNITY NEWS

Facing fear, embracing healing:

the power of wild swimming and

inner courage

On a calm Sunday morning at Loe Beach in Feock, a quiet act of courage

took place. A woman, recently rescued from a rip current at a North Cornwall

beach, returned to the sea for the first time since the traumatic experience.

Not long ago, she had been caught in a

powerful rip current at a North Cornwall

beach and rescued by a lifeguard who

happened to be riding past on a jet ski.

The experience had left her struggling with

nightmares and anxiety, a reminder of how

quickly the sea can change from beautiful

to dangerous.

But on this morning, with calm waters and

no crowds, she entered the designated

swimming bay at Loe Beach. Armed with

a bright pink buoy and a gentle sense of

purpose, she allowed herself to reconnect

with the water. No grand gestures, no

pressure - just a small, symbolic act of going

under to wet her head. A reset. A release.

This simple moment holds a powerful

message: healing doesn’t always come in

dramatic waves - it arrives quietly, through

presence, safety, and inner strength.

The sea, when respected, can be deeply

therapeutic. But it’s vital to remember

that safety must come first. The Royal

National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) shares

life-saving advice for anyone entering

open water:

Float to Live: If caught in difficulty, lie on

your back, spread your arms and legs, and

float until your breathing steadies.

Choose lifeguarded beaches: Especially

when conditions are unfamiliar or turbulent.

Never swim alone: Let someone know

where you’re going.

24 Truro Together is part of Community Together

Know your limits: Even confident

swimmers can be caught off guard by

currents.

These tips, combined with respect for nature,

can mean the difference between life and loss.

We also owe deep gratitude to our

lifeguards and RNLI teams, whose vigilance

and bravery continue to save lives across

Cornwall’s coastline every week. Their quiet

heroism is felt by families, friends, and

communities alike.

The sea may sometimes test us - but it can

also help us rebuild. With courage, calm,

and care, even the most fearful moments

can be transformed into healing. If you have

suffered trauma from an experience like this

What if you could recharge

your body like a battery?

When electricity was first explored by

Benjamin Franklin, and later harnessed by

visionaries like Thomas Edison and Nikola

Tesla, it was met with disbelief. You couldn’t

see it - yet today, we depend on it for nearly

every part of life.

Energy within us works the same way. Invisible, but

constantly felt - in our interactions, thoughts, emotions,

and even the energy we carry into a room. Have you

ever sensed someone’s mood without them saying a

word? That’s energy.

Our bodies are intelligent systems capable of healing,

but only if they have enough life force - supported by

sleep, food, rest, and emotional peace.

Energy healing, or Pranic Healing, is a non-touch

therapy that anyone can learn in a weekend. It can

speed up the recovery of many physical conditions

- from the common cold and headaches to more

complex issues like dementia, hormonal imbalances,

heart conditions, and even cancer. It also supports

emotional and psychological healing - from everyday

stress to deep-rooted trauma and addictions.

Modern Pranic Healing was developed by Master

Choa Kok Sui, a chemical engineer, successful

businessman, and philanthropist. He spent over 20

years refining this method into a practical, accessible

system now used worldwide.

Energy therapy isn’t new -
