Gerrards Cross West Common in Autumn
Hello and welcome
We all face moments in life that stop us in our
tracks. This July, I would have celebrated my
30th wedding anniversary - except I didn’t.
Coincidentally, it was also the date Princess
Diana would have celebrated hers - except she
didn’t. Remembering her kindness and tireless
humanitarian work made me reflect on the legacy
we leave.
Life can lift us up or hit us hard, yet even a
harsh “slap” can be a wake-up call to live more
meaningfully. In our summer issue, I included The
Great Invocation, a World Peace Prayer written
after World War II. Peace begins at home - with
the energy we project. Is it love and kindness… or
something else?
We have one life. Make the most of it. Be kind to
your neighbours. Spread goodness like a ripple, by
helping in your community - perhaps volunteering
for the Fun Run. Don’t limit your care to yourself or
your immediate family.
I’ve learned through Pranic Healing that we all have
the capacity to change, to heal, and to lift others.
The smallest act of kindness can be the start of
something extraordinary.
With love,
Therese

Prerna Bhardwaj:
A visionary light for
Gerrards Cross
Gerrards Cross & Chalfonts Together
were delighted to catch up with
Councillor Prerna Bhardwaj, now
in her second consecutive term as
Mayor, to hear more about her vision
for the year ahead.
Having lived in the town for over seven
years, Prerna sees the role as both an honour
and a platform to connect with residents,
schools, and businesses. With a background
in law, finance, and international publishing,
she brings a passion for positive storytelling
and practical action.
Her priorities for the year include
diversifying the high street, promoting
alternatives to harmful pesticides, planting
more trees, and enhancing safety through
improved lighting and new CCTV cameras.
Prerna is equally committed to involving
young people in local democracy. Listening
to children’s ideas has already led to real
change - from trampolines in the park to
accessible play equipment. She wants every
resident, no matter their age, to feel their
voice matters.
She is also a strong supporter of community
events such as the Fun Run Together (5km)
family run in Gerrards Cross taking place on
May 17th 2026, recognising their power
to unite people and raise funds for local
charities.
Her message to the community is
heartfelt: “We are fortunate to live in such a
wonderful place. Let’s keep working together
to make Gerrards Cross even better. My door
is always open.”
To contact Prerna, write to the Clerk at
Gerrards Cross Town Council, where she
will respond personally.

COMMUNITY NEWS
A year of
community
connections
words by Annabel Pelling Tesco’s
Community Champion
It’s hard to believe it’s been just over
a year since my store manager Eddie
White gave me the opportunity to
become Community Champion. In
that time, I’ve been lucky enough to
meet so many incredible people who
go the extra mile for others.
I’ve met parents working tirelessly to create
better facilities for their children’s schools,
food banks providing meals for the homeless
and support for families struggling with
the rising cost of living, and Brownies and
Scouts raising funds for exciting activities.
Every one of them has shown just how
powerful community spirit can be.
Over the past year, he’s completed a
parachute jump for Scan-Appeal, given
countless inspiring talks, and even received
awards for his outstanding work.
Our Stronger Starts blue token scheme has
been a real hit - especially with the children,
who love voting for their favourite project.
Right now, we’re supporting:
• 1st Iver Heath Scout Group
• The Gerrards Cross Church of England
School
• Lynch Hill Primary School Academy
I’ve also had the privilege of meeting other
Community Champions who inspire me
every day. My closest is BJ from Tesco
Amersham - one of the most selfless people
I’ve ever met. Whenever I pop into his store,
I find him championing the food bank or
shining a light on local charities and projects.

We’d love to see even more local projects
get involved. Recently we’ve had to look a
little further afield, so if you know a group
that could benefit, please nominate them at

Here’s to another year of working together,
supporting one another, and making a real
difference in our community.

EDUCATIONAL NEWS
What to ask on a school
tour: A parent’s guide to
choosing the right fit
As the summer sun gives way to autumn
routines, it’s officially ‘open event’ season - a
key time for families weighing up their school
options.
Across the county, independent and state
schools alike are preparing to open their doors,
offering prospective parents and pupils a chance
to experience life in school before making those
all-important applications.
But with polished presentations and pristine
classrooms, how do you get beneath the surface
to understand whether a school is truly the right
fit for your child?
Start by observing the atmosphere. Do pupils
seem happy, confident and engaged? How do
staff interact with them? A quick glance at corridor
conversations and classroom dynamics can be
more telling than any league table.
Ask about what matters to your family - whether that’s
pastoral care, academic stretch, sport, wraparound
provision or SEND support. Don’t be afraid to ask
how the school supports working parents - some offer
early years provision all year round and run in-house
holiday clubs, which can ease the childcare puzzle.
It’s also worth enquiring about pupil destinations:
where do children go on to thrive after leaving?
The answer can offer a window into the school’s
values and aspirations.
Finally, trust your instincts. A school might look
impressive on paper, but it’s how it feels - and how
your child responds to it - that matters most.
School tours aren’t just about buildings. They’re
about belonging. Take your time, ask the right
questions, and keep your child at the centre of
every conversation.

If you think a
care home is

words by Dr Jim Morrisroe
With an increasingly ageing

thinking that spending your twilight

South Bucks/Chilterns
and the chances are
you’ll find one of the
50 plus residential care

the one thing that we’re
not short of.
But what happens if you’ve reached that
stage in life where you need care, but the only
home you want to live in is your own? What
happens of you enjoy your independence and
home comforts, but need a little help around
the house, or with the shopping? And what
happens if you have a child or young adult with
a disability and need a break now and again?
Well, the good news is that you now have a
choice.
A More Caring Approach...
Eden Care at Home opened an office in
Gerrards Cross two years ago, where they offer
quality care at home for you, or your loved
one, whether a child, young adult or an elderly
person. Eden care’s management team have
more than 50 years in the care sector and was
established by Dr Jim Morrisroe. Jim knows
from personal experience that the decisions a

EYE NEWS
Look stylish
this Autumn
Glasses are no longer just a vision aid -
they’re a powerful statement of fashion
and who you are.
Experimenting with different shapes and
colours allows you to express your personality
and switch up your look with ease. Round
frames offer a vintage vibe, while square or
rectangular shapes add a modern, structured
touch. Cat-eye frames bring a fun, retro flair,
perfect for bold fashion lovers.
Colour plays a very important role. Classic
black or tortoiseshell frames will always be
versatile and timeless, while bright hues like
red, blue, or pastel tones can add a pop of
personality and fun. Transparent or two-tone
frames offer a contemporary twist for those
wanting something subtle yet stylish. The new
transparents have a hint of soft colour such as
grey or sand and are much softer than the stark
clear frames of a couple of years ago.
Having a variety of glasses in different shapes
and colours gives you flexibility to match your
mood, outfit, or occasion. The right pair of
glasses can complete your look and make you
feel confident.

Dear neighbour,
I’m inviting you to experience something completely new and
honestly, there’s nothing else like it around here.
BEAR is a 14-seat chef’s table I’ve created to be different.
More personal. More daring. It’s been shaped by everywhere I’ve
cooked, everywhere I’ve travelled, and everything I love about food.
Expect a seasonal menu packed with bold flavours, wild creativity,
and ingredients foraged and sourced with real care. Some dishes will
surprise you. Some you might not even believe until you taste them.
But every plate is designed to spark something, curiosity and
conversation long after the night ends.
Open Tuesday to Saturday

The Full Carlo Scotto Experience at 19:45 all evening from £110.
Set within an open kitchen, BEAR isn’t just about food on a plate.
It’s a front-row seat to the process, the passion, the moments you

GARDENING
Autumn Glow: 5 essential September &
October gardening tips
As the days shorten and a crispness
fills the air, it’s time to prepare your
garden for the cooler months ahead while
celebrating the final harvest. To get your
garden ready for autumn and beyond,
here are five essential tips:
Celebrate the Harvest: Now is the time to
gather in the last of your summer bounty.
Harvest pumpkins, squash, and maincrop
potatoes before the first frost hits, ensuring
your hard work doesn’t go to waste.
Plant for Spring Colour: Start thinking ahead!
September and October are the perfect
months to plant spring-flowering bulbs like
daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths. This will
reward you with a vibrant display next year.
Tackle Your Tidying: Keep on top of fallen
leaves by raking them from your lawn and
borders. You can use this organic matter to
create leaf mould, a fantastic soil improver for
next season.
Tidy and Prune: Cut back old foliage from
summer perennials and deadhead late-blooming
flowers to keep your garden looking neat.
However, leave some seed heads for the birds
to enjoy.
Look After Your Soil: Don’t leave your soil
bare! Cover it with a generous layer of mulch
or sow a green manure to protect it from winter
weather, enrich it with nutrients and suppress
weeds.
Lawn Care: Give your lawn one last mow with
the blades set high to leave the grass slightly
longer for winter. You can also aerate and
scarify your lawn now to improve drainage and
get it ready for spring.

Wednesday Club
Cafés for people living
with Dementia
“The Club Cafés have been a godsend to
my wife,” shares one local resident. A carer
comments, “My loved one hasn’t smiled so
much in ages.”
The Wednesday Club Cafés in Gerrards Cross and
Chalfont St Peter are warm, welcoming spaces for
people living with dementia and their carers. Held
twice a month in Chalfont St Peter - on the first
Wednesday of the month at St Joseph’s Church
Committee Room (10am–12 noon) and the third
Wednesday at St Peter’s Hall, Church Lane (10am–12
noon) - these gatherings offer connection, understanding,
and a chance to simply enjoy life.
Our mission is to help those affected by dementia
to live well. We believe in creating an atmosphere of
dignity, joy, and purpose. Whether it’s conversation
over tea, a shared laugh, or gentle activities, every
visit helps lift spirits and ease the burden of isolation.
We also help the carers in a number of ways notably
by listening, by signposting and ensuring that they
have the opportunity to discuss with other carers their
shared concerns.
The cafés are completely free to attend and
supported by a team of caring, dementia-trained
volunteers.
If you or someone you love would benefit from
joining us, please contact Dementia Specialist
Sally Blackden on 07932 643 949.
Because every smile matters - and everyone deserves
to feel seen and supported.
Chalfont St Giles
wins the Pushman
Cup
The Parish Council is delighted to
announce that Chalfont St Giles has won
the Pushman Cup in the Buckinghamshire
Best Kept Village Competition.
The competition. is judged on several criteria
which include: floral displays, children’s play areas,
community facilities, environmental features and
evidence of community engagement. Many
village groups and residents helped to tidy the
village and ensure that the features being judged
were shown in their best light.
The village scored an amazing total of 196
points out of a possible 200. Items noted in
the judge’s remarks were the excellent High
Street war memorial, the village pump and
the specially created ‘Best Kept Village’ letter
box topper created by the Knit and Natter group.
This is a wonderful achievement and welcomed as
the village pulled out of the competition in 2024
due to pollution in the River Misbourne. Showing
what a difference a year makes, the environmental
features noted as being very well looked after
were Riverside Walk and the village pond.
The Pushman Cup will be presented to the
village on Saturday 20 September. We would
welcome everyone who contributed to this
competition to come along and help to celebrate
the win. Please check social media and the
Parish Council website for further information

Microsuctioning
At Hearwego Clinic we provide instant and effective ear wax removal treatment. Microsuction is the gold
standard method of ear wax removal.
Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, which uses water, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove
ear wax. This is a safe, gentle and effective method of ear wax removal and, in the majority of cases, provides
instant relief and immediately restores full hearing. Our Audiologists are trained in all methods of ear wax
removal, microsuction, ear irrigation (commonly known as ear syringing) and instrumentation.
What to expect at your appointment
At Hearwego our practitioners will use a microscope to see a detailed view of your ear canal and examine
the potential build-up of ear wax. Ear wax and debris are removed using a gentle device. Our appointments
include an examination of your ears and removal of ear wax using microsuction, which typically lasts between
10-30 minutes. Depending on the consistency of the wax, we may need to revert to ear irrigation (commonly
known as ear syringing) or instrumentation. In rare cases, a follow-up visit may be required to remove
particularly stubborn ear wax.
Are you experiencing any of the following?
• Pressure in the ears
• Blocked feeling in the ears
• Need to pop your ears but can’t
• Sudden loss of hearing or muffles sound
• Hearing aids whistling
• Underperforming hearing aids
