T Bar, just 500 meters from the San Paolo metro

station, offers you the perfect ambiance to focus

and work. Open from 8am to 2am, you’ll have

all the flexibility you need. Start your day with a

delicious breakfast then work through lunch which

runs from 12 noon to 3pm, and after (smart)work

you can stay at the T Bar for the aperitivo. In the

more nightly hours, the atmosphere comes alive

with music starting at 10pm.

Via Della Penitenza, 35 (Trastevere)

Zalib is a cultural center in the heart of Trastevere,

run by a group of enterprising young people who

organize music, art, literature and other social

events and workshops. The venue is spacious, with

an indoor and an outdoor area, offering the chance

to find peace and silence among the garden plants

in the summer, or warmth and comfort in the winter

months. Keep in mind that Zalib, being a cultural

association, requires annual membership.

attend the store’s ongoing book launches, reading

groups, and literary events.

These guys have been saving bookworm expats

for the past 30 years with their great selection of

English, French and Spanish books. There’s an

eclectic mix of genres and they also stock and buy

secondhand books. They often host small concerts

and book presentations and their whole philosophy

is very much for those who take pleasure in

browsing for the perfect escapism on the page.

SPAZIO SETTE LIBRERIA

Via dei Barbieri, 7 (Centro Storico)

This is a wonderful three-storey, 400-squaremetre

bookstore that hosts meetings, events and

exhibitions, taking the place of a historic design

shop, whose name and logo it has retained. Spazio

Sette offers an assortment spanning all areas, from

fiction to non-fiction, from thriller to photography,

from design to theatre, and even a section

dedicated to children’s literature.

ALMOST CORNER BOOKSHOP

Via del Moro, 45 (Trastevere)

This little bookshop is the perfect place to escape

the hectic pace of city life and get lost in a good

book for a couple hours. Locals love coming here

because it’s a taste of Trastevere that hasn’t faded

away in the fast developing neighborhood full of

shops. Almost Corner has a beautiful assortment of

new and used books in English where you can find

classics and some newer titles.

SHELL LIBRERIA BISTROT

Vicolo della Fontana, 28 (Salario/Trieste)

Shell Libreria Bistrot is a cultural space located in

front of Villa Paganini Park in Rome’s Salario-Trieste

district. This unique venue combines a bookstore

with a bistro, creating a meeting point for book

lovers, food enthusiasts, and culture seekers.

In addition to offering a selection of books for

purchase, Shell Libreria Bistrot serves breakfast,

lunch, and aperitifs, making it an ideal spot for

socializing and attending cultural events. Its cozy

and creative atmosphere makes it perfect for those

BIBLIOTECA VALLICELLIANA

Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, 18

The Vallicelliana Library is a gorgeous

Baroque library, founded in 1565 by an Italian

priest called Filippo Neri. The collection of

around 130,000 volumes, including vellumbound

wonders, is primarily made up of

religious works documenting the Reformation

and the Counterreformation and medieval

history. There is also a small but notable

collection of texts related to music and a

collection of photographs. Open to anyone 16

years and older with valid documentation.

BIBLIOTECA CASANATENSE

Via S. Ignazio, 52 (Centro Storico)

The Dominican cardinal Girolamo Casanata

opened this library to the general public

in 1701. Since 1870, however, the Italian

government has administered the library.

The original catalogue was around 25,000

volumes and donated by Casanata to the

Dominican convent of Santa Maria sopra

Minerva along with a large endowment fund

for the purchase new books. Amongst the

library’s possessions are Greek and Hebrew

texts, Roman governmental proclamations,

and comedies of the 17th and 18th

centuries. Open to anyone 16 years and older

with valid documentation.

BIBLIOTECA DEL SENATO

Piazza della Minerva, 38 (Pantheon)

The library of the Senate opened its

doors to the public in 2003. It provides a

wealth of about 700,000 volumes, about

3,000 periodicals and 600 Italian and

foreign newspapers, the most important

collection of Statutes of Municipalities and

corporations from the late Middle Ages to

the contemporary age, ancient editions of

Common and Canon Law, one of the richest

collections of 19th century periodicals and

much more. The library is open to anyone

16 years and older with valid documentation

after having filled in a form.

BIBLIOTECA ANGELICA

Piazza Sant’Agostino, 8 (Navona)

Established in 1604 by the Augustinian bishop

Angelo Rocca, it was first opened to the public

in 1609. It holds around 120,000 manuscripts.

Assets include key documents on the

Reformation and Counter-Reformation, Bibles,

2,700 Latin, Greek and Oriental volumes, plus

Italian literature and theatre from the 15th to

18th centuries. Highlights are rare editions

of works by Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio.

Open to anyone 16 years and older with valid

documentation.

Revolution and Tradition, opening October

2026, exploring the Spanish icon’s bold

artworks including paintings and drawings

borrowed from major Spanish institutions such as the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation, the

What’s on this Fall: art events to mark on your calendar

Rome is preparing to welcome art lovers with a wide offer of exhibitions

this coming season, featuring world known painters as well as

contemporary artists. From Gauguin’s evocative travel diaries to Mucha’s

graceful Art Nouveau and Dalí’s dreamlike surrealism, the autumn art

scene promises an interesting journey through time, borders, culture and

artistic expression.

The Noa Noa Diary and

Other Adventures

! Historical Museum of the Infantry

a1 September 6, 2025 – January 25, 2026

Opening the cultural calendar on

September 6, 2025, Gauguin: The Noa

Noa Diary and Other Adventures at the

Historical Museum of the Infantry. The

exhibition is ispired by the French artist’s

memories as collected in his Tahiti travel

journal. In addition to the painter’s observations, the diary includes xilographies which depict

Polynesian’s myths and traditions. Visitors will be able to see a series of lytographies coming

from the book Avant et Après and to understand the artist’s work getting a glimpse at his

personal notebook. This exhibition will run until January 25, 2026.

At Palazzo Bonaparte, from October 8,

2025, visitors can immerse themselves

in the elegance of the Belle Époque with

Alphonse Mucha, a major retrospective

on the Czech master of Art Nouveau,

open through March 8, 2026. In addition

to more than 150 artworks by Mucha,

the exhibition will focus on the theme of beauty and feminine charm with the extraordinary

presence of the painting Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli coming from the Royal Museum of

Turin.

Picasso:

The language of Ideas

! Historical Museum of the Infantry

a1 October 4, 2025, to January 25, 2026

Just a month later, on October 4, the

same venue will host the exhibition

entitled Picasso: The language of Ideas,

a showcase of the artist’s lithographs,

ceramics, and drawings, also on view until

January 25, 2026. The show unfolds across six thematic sections, tracing Picasso’s journey

from academic realism to his innovative work on the art of inscription. On display there will

be numerous lithographs and etchings covering the major phases of his career, alongside a

significant collection of ceramics that reveal his talent for transforming different materials into

creative objects. A standout feature is the section dedicated to his less known work for the

Russian ballets, with original costumes and set designs for Le Tricorne, inspired by Spanish

folk traditions.

9th edition of the Graziadei Photography Award:

Contemporary photography also claims the spotlight with the 9th Edition of the Graziadei

Photography Award, featuring Nicola Di Giorgio’s innovative works centered on materiality

and architecture, on view at MAXXI from September 19 to November 2, 2025. Calcestruzzo

(Concrete) is a multidisciplinary project that investigates the pervasive role of concrete in the

modern Italian landscape. Through photography and installation, it explores interconnected

themes—from the material’s historical and scientific relevance to personal and urban

narratives—highlighting the relationship between natural and artificial forces shaping cities.

Pharaohs

For those drawn to the mysteries of

ancient civilizations, Treasures of the

Pharaohs at the Scuderie del Quirinale

opens on October 23, 2025, offering

a rare glimpse into the splendor of

ancient Egypt. The exhibition offers a rare and unmissable chance to view 130 masterpieces

from Egypt’s most prestigious museums. Through these works of art, visitors can explore

the fascinating journey of ancient Egypt—from its earliest origins, through the golden age

of the New Kingdom and the Third Intermediate Period, to some of the most remarkable

DAY ONE

Head down the luxurious Via dei Condotti for some mandatory window-shopping until you

see the grand Fendi store. Take a left here and you’ll be on your way to the Trevi Fountain.

If you’re not keen on mass tourists or you’ve seen the famous ‘Dolce Vita Fountain’ before, in

this same direction at the end of Via del Corso is the magnificent Palazzo Doria Pamphilij.

This privately owned palace hosts one of the most incredible collections of art and sculptures

in Rome. Aside from the art, it is worth the entrance fee, just to enter this palazzo and see how

Roman aristocracy lived once upon a time.

Start your day in the historic centre of Rome,

where you can wander down cobblestone

alleyways, through romantic piazzas, shop,

eat and take in the heart of the city all on

foot.

Let’s start at Metro stop Spagna. You

walk out and you’re in Piazza di Spagna,

often referred to as the Spanish Steps. Head

to the right up Via del Babuino towards

Piazza del Popolo. Stop for a caffè at the

famous cafe/bar Canova, where you can

people-watch in the seats facing the piazza

or pay less and drink your coffee at the bar

Italian-style.

From here wander up the path that winds

from Piazza del Popolo to the lookout in

Rome’s most beautiful park Villa Borghese.

This spot is called Pincio and allows a

panoramic view over the entire city. You

can stroll through the gardens to the lake

where you can hire a rowboat or to the

opulent Galleria Borghese, for classic art

in a breathtaking palazzo. But if your time

is limited, head back down to Piazza del

Popolo.

You might be hungry at this point. Walking

back down Via del Babuino, turn left down

a little side street called Via Margutta.

At number 1 you will find Babette

(06.3211559), where you can enjoy a

delicious but gourmet buffet either inside

or out in their courtyard in amongst chic

locals and stylish visitors from the nearby

Hotel de Russie. Don’t forget to try their

secret recipe ‘Torta di Babette’–this lighter

version of cheesecake made with ricotta is

scrumptious.

After a lazy lunch wander down the length

of Via Margutta and you’ll find one of the

prettiest streets in Rome, filled with art

galleries and a serenity that contrasts

with the rush of people in nearby Piazza di

Spagna.

From here you can head back up Via del Corso, cross the elegant Piazza San Lorenzo in

Lucina (stop for a coffee at the cafe/bar Ciampini if you want to gaze at some truly elegant

men and women of Rome) and up Via Campo Marzio on your way to what I believe is the

best monument in Rome: the awe-inspiring Pantheon in Piazza della Rotonda.

To take the beauty overload even further, from

here cross to Piazza Navona, with its spectacular

fountains and atmosphere; however, eating in

this piazza is strictly for tourists. Slip down the

little alleyway near Caffe Bernini and wind your way

through to Via dei Coronari. Here you will find one

of best gelateria in Rome: Gelateria del Teatro.

Rest your feet a while in this picturesque setting

while licking white chocolate and basil or fig, ricotta

and almond gelato.

You might be ready for an aperitivo. Among the

options we recommend are Salotto 42 in Piazza

di Pietra, Enoteca Il Goccetto on Via dei Banchi

Vecchi, and Camponeschi in Piazza Farnese,

where if you’re lucky, you can enjoy an aperitif at

one of the tables outside.

Trastevere

Start your day nice and early and take in the world-famous Vatican City. See the Vatican

Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s and after all that art and majesty, you’ll be out just

in time for lunch. Choose the place that inspires you the most among those we recommend in

our guide to the best restaurants near the Vatican.

Walk into the charming Borgo Pio, a small and peaceful maze of narrow streets. Just a

few steps from Borgo Pio, you can visit one of Rome’s symbols: Castel Sant’Angelo (or The

Mausoleum of Hadrian). The view over the roof of Rome that you can enjoy from the terrace

is worth the ticket price. Catch a bus or taxi to Trastevere and spend the afternoon getting

lost in its rambling laneways, perhaps indulging in yet another gelato in the main square of

Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere. Around sunset you can head up to the nearby bar

Freni e Frizioni on Via del Politeama or to Cvlto near Piazza Trilussa for a great aperitif. After

which, just around the corner in Piazza della Malva, you can devour a plate of traditional

carbonara at Ristorante Zi’ Mberto or in one of the places you can find in our guide to the

DAY THREE

Colosseum

Monti

Testaccio

Start your morning in the cool and

charactertistic neighborhood of Monti

(Metro Cavour). Have breakfast or morning

tea out at the Antico Forno ai Serpenti

on the corner of Via dei Serpenti and Via

Panisperna, a bakery filled with delicious

pastries and sweets. Take a stroll around this

quaint but trendy quarter and pick up some

vintage finds and pick up a piece of pizza or

a panino-to-go from one of the little pizzerie

al taglio (pizza by the slice) before heading to

a tour of the Colosseum, just down the road.

You may want to visit the Imperial Forums

while you’re in this area. And just a bit

further on, in Piazza Venezia, it’s worth

venturing up to Il Vittoriano, or the big white

wedding cake monument, for the frescoes,

the views of the city and the sheer grandeur

of the building.

From here it’s just a short walk down to

the Jewish Ghetto, which is filled with old

palazzi and the cute little square Piazza

Mattei with its famous turtle fountain. The

Jewish Quarter in Rome is also a great

spot to partake of delicious fresh bread or

a traditional Jewish-style fried artichoke.

Jump in a taxi from here and for about

€10/15 you can get to Testaccio, the working

class neighborhood with some rustic spots

for serious foodies. Take a stroll through the

beautiful Non-Catholic Cemetery, a place of

quiet and peace that gently pulls you away

from the city traffic. And don’t forget to

visit the Testaccio Market (open only in the

morning until 3:30 pm), it’s the perfect place

for a leisurely foodie day out with the locals.

At aperitivo time, head to Piazza Testaccio

where you’ll find several bars to enjoy a

refreshing beer. For dinner, you’ll be spoiled

for choice. Try Pecorino on Via Galvani 64,

foods. Choose from a variety of cooked and raw food,

marinated salmon, yummy club sandwiches, buffalo

mozzarella, hamburgers, rich salads and more, all finished

off with fresh fruit.

The aperitif is served every day between 5pm and 9pm. There is a fixed formula at 45 euros

which includes a drink (cocktail or glass of wine) accompanied by a selection of finger food,

also available for vegans and celiacs.

I suggest going in the evening so you can enjoy the cool breeze above the tumult of the city

below, sip a cocktail and watch the sun’s last rays warm the ancient stones of the eternal city.

This year, Romaeuropa Festival celebrates its

40th edition with an exceptional line-up of

events running from the 4th of September to

the 16th of November. Over 110 shows and

250 performances will take place across the

city, featuring 700 artists from all over the

world. Spanning music, theatre, dance, digital

arts, and performances for children, the festival

will unfold in more than 20 venues throughout

Rome. The 40th edition promises to be one of

After a long absence, Rome devotes a full

exhibition to Paul Gauguin. From September 6

to January 25, 2026, the Museo della Fanteria

hosts Gauguin. The Noa Noa Diary and Other

Adventures, produced by Navigare srl, and

curated by Vincenzo Sanfo.

The show brings together more than 160

works from Italian, French and Belgian

private collections, alongside loans from

Italian and French museums. Over

one hundred pieces by Gauguin -

woodcuts, drawings and lithographs

- anchor the display, joined by two

works attributed to him: the oil

Femme de Tahiti (1891) and the

watercolor Paysage Tahitien.

The centerpiece is the suite of 23 woodcuts

for the Noa Noa Diary (1893–94), written

during Gauguin’s first stay in French

Polynesia and illustrated with wood

engravings printed by Daniel de Monfreid.

The Polynesian strand continues with

16 color lithographs from the Ancien

Culte Mahorie series (1892), two 1893

sculptures (terracotta and bronze), the

patinated bronze mask “Tehura” from the

Musée Despiau-Wlérick, and a sketchbook

of 38 drawings spanning portrait studies,

anatomical details and animal motifs.

Also on view are facsimile lithographs

from Avant et Après, Gauguin’s final

book, completed in 1903 and published

posthumously, a hybrid manifesto-diary

of notes on art, friendships and the

preoccupations that shaped his late

thought. While Tahiti left a decisive mark

on his vision, the exhibition also tracks

Gauguin’s ties to the Western world,

France above all, and to his circle of

contemporaries.

GAUGUIN IN ROME: THE NOA NOA DIARY AND OTHER ADVENTURES

In that vein, the show includes 45 works

- drawings, prints and paintings - by

13 leading 19th-century French artists: the “friend-rival” Vincent van Gogh (with 12 color

lithographs), Jean-François Millet with the etching L’Angelus, Adolphe Beaufrère (four etchings)

and Louis Anquetin. From Pont-Aven and the Nabis come Maurice Denis (religious-themed

lithographs), Émile Bernard (the six hand-colored Bretonneries and an oil on cardboard), and Paul

Sérusier with L’adieu à Gauguin, on loan from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper.

Photographs, books, documents and artifacts round out the itinerary, offering a layered portrait of

Gauguin’s world between Europe and Polynesia.

Firenze Jazz Festival

The Florence Jazz Festival returns from September 2nd to 14th

Over 100 artists involved, 16 days of

programming, 9 venues, and more than

30 scheduled events: from September 2

to 14, 2025, the Florence Jazz Festival

returns for its ninth edition, marking a

new milestone in its growth.

Supported by an ever-expanding network

of partners, the Festival aims to establish

itself as one of the year’s most anticipated

events in Florence and beyond.

This edition heralds the return to the

Cascine Amphitheater, the symbolic space

that has already hosted unforgettable

moments in past years. A fully immersive

Festival, where music meets the pleasure

of conviviality thanks to a carefully

curated food & beverage offering. True to

its polycentric spirit, the FJF will alternate

its classic stages in the early days before

opening up, at the heart of the program,

to paths of artistic cross-pollination, experimentation, and encounter. A living venue where

the audience can mingle, discover, and be surprised.

As every year, the Festival features a guest graphic artist who defines its visual concept.

This year’s choice is PixelPancho, one of Italy’s most acclaimed street artists on the

international scene.

On the Main Stage of the Cascine Amphitheater “Ernesto De Pascale,” performers include

Alabaster DePlume, Alfa Mist, Bassolino, Coca Puma, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel

Duchamp, and Planet Funk.
