Back-To-School

Business Booming

ONE of the most exciting things about

being a retailer is the start of each new sales

season. With each season brings the endless

possibilities that accompany it.

THE back-to-school season that has quite a

bit of steam in it this year has been in full flurry

since the middle of last month. The reports

that we have seen show a nice increase over

last year’s numbers. We have also not been

seeing dramatic price fluctuations that some

economists predicted due to tariffs. This is all

great news for all retailers.

HOPEFULLY your business has profited by

this season which is the start of some of the

busiest months in our industry. If you were

with us last issue, you’re already on the gravy

train and have planned ahead and ready to

prosper.

BACK-to-school will be winding up the

bulk of its energy by the end of this month

but there will still be residual sales to be

made next month. As students settle in and

start their classes they will be making lists

of additional items including apparel and

accessories that they will want and need.

This always happens once students see the

new trendy looks their fellow classmates are

sporting.

AS college students settle into their dorm

rooms or apartments they will realize that

having an extra set of sheets and pillow cases

isn’t such a bad idea and will be looking

into adding to their supplies. So, there are

still a good many sales opportunities left for

this month before we hit the next holiday:

Halloween.

MOST retailers I spoke with at last month’s

trade shows share that there has been no

rhyme or reason to their sales spurts. Many

small retailers have been mentioning that

their online sales have been outpacing their

in-store sales which is definitely a trend. We

have been encouraging all of our readers to

keep up with their websites to stay relevant

and profitable.

MORE people than ever are opening

stores, whether it be traditional brick-andmortar

or online ones. These businesses have

been stimulating the economy in all ways as

they need all types of start -up equipment,

merchandise and services.

WHOLESALERS are benefitting by these

new businesses as well. Our hope is that

more traditional physical stores will open in

our downtown areas around the country. It

is these shopping enclaves that attract new

residents into communities and are vital to

their growth.

START gearing up for what we think will

be a very busy holiday season. It is never too

early to start planning for your store’s success.

Bed Bath & Beyond Home Reopens

BED Bath & Beyond is making its brick-and-mortar return with a new format and one of its most iconic

features.

THE Brand House Collective, formerly Kirkland’s Inc., said that it will celebrate the grand opening of its

first Bed Bath & Beyond Home location on Aug. 8, in Nashville. The store opening is the first for the company

under its new name, The Brand House Collective, following its approval by shareholders at the annual

meeting.

TO celebrate the grand opening, the company brought back one of the brand’s most iconic traditions:

the Bed Bath & Beyond coupon. The retailer will provide customers with new coupons at the door and will

also honor legacy coupons that customers bring in.

ALSO, the first 25 customers who made a purchase received a free 10″ memory foam queen size mattress,

called the Beyond Bed, that is regularly valued at $226.99.

“WERE proud to reintroduce one of retail’s most iconic names with the launch of Bed Bath & Beyond

Home, beautifully reimagined for how families gather at home today,” said Amy Sullivan, CEO of The Brand

House Collective. “This isn’t just a store, it’s a fresh start for a brand that means something special to so many

families. With Bed Bath & Beyond Home we’re delivering on our mission to offer great brands, for any budget,

in every room. It’s a powerful addition to our portfolio and a meaningful step forward in our transformation.”

Mattel Goal To Keep Toys Below $20

MATTEL’S goal is to keep prices as low as possible, according to executives.

“WE’RE committed to the uninterrupted supply for a wide range of high-quality products and providing

the right balance of price and value for our customers,” said Ruh, who joined the company roughly two

months ago.

WITH nearly 80% of toys imported to the U.S. coming from China, the category could prove to be

especially vulnerable to the impact of tariffs. That is on top of a consumer base that is already stating prices

will impact their purchasing behaviors during the back-to-school season, per an ICSC report.

HOWEVER, CEO Ynon Kreiz doesn’t see consumers as any more price sensitive compared to a year ago,

as the company has been working “very closely with our retail partners when we consider pricing” headed

into the second half of the year and the holiday season.

THE company expects the total tariff exposure for this year before any mitigating actions to be under

$100 million. Mattel last quarter forecast a $270 million impact from tariffs.

THE company’s dolls category was particularly impacted during the quarter, declining 19%, primarily due

to fewer Barbie product launches. (Though the company earlier this month did release its first Barbie doll with

Type 1 diabetes.) Mattel expects to see improving trends with the brand in the latter half of the year.

TOY competitor Hasbro also reported second quarter earnings this week, with revenue dipping 1% year

over year to around $981 million.

Some will feel most comfortable making you a

straight loan, to be paid back over time with interest.

Others may prefer lending the money

with expectations of being paid back, and a

share in the future profits of the store. Deal with

family and friends on a case-by-case basis, sensitive

to their needs. Any agreement you reach

should be in writing, even if it’s just an informal

letter outlining the terms: the amount of

the loan, the payback plan, and what, if any,

their long-term interest in the business will be.

Of course, the potential pool of funding sources

you don’t already personally know is much

wider. It’s just more difficult to identify and

find moneyed individuals receptive to helping

the total stranger with the start-up store. Anyone

Suppliers may not lend you money outright,

but they can finance your orders to give you inventory

on a consignment basis. The same is

true with contractors and other service

providers. Instead of one lump payment, they

may be willing to structure a payment schedule

that works with your budget. You won’t know

what kind of flexibility is available to you from

these “partners” until you ask.

CONSIDER RECRUITING

INVESTORS

They do exist, and once you have a business

plan on paper, you can make a pitch for investors.

Advertise or spread the word. Usually

they want equity, a share of the business and

profits based on their contribution to start-up

funding. For providing 10% of that cost, an investor

may expect a payback plus 10% of profits.

Think of this as selling shares in the business.

Such an arrangement has legal

implications that require the involvement of an

attorney.

This may be what amounts to a start-up grant

either through an outright donation to the

cause or a low-cost, long-term loan. If the business

prospers, the angel may expect a return. If

not, the angel can walk away from the endeavor

knowing he tried to help someone

where it counts. Finding your angel – that’s a

challenge! It’s more likely they’ll find you, so

don’t count on their help.

INSTITUTIONAL LENDERS

Good advice to the contrary, you may decide

it’s worth investigating your chances for a business

loan from a local lending institution. This

may prove an exercise in futility, especially if

the store is your first stab at self-employment.

You may have good personal credit, and a good

relationship with your local loan officer, but it

may not be enough to get the loan you need.

Make your case, in person and on paper. If all

else fails and you need the funding, consider

asking for a personally guaranteed loan. It’s not

the best situation, but if the store really matters,

you’ll have little trouble living with the commitment.

Also check in with

the area office of the

Small Business Administration

and see if you qualify for one of its

guaranteed loans. The application process is

thorough, and funds are limited. But you won’t

know if you qualify until you apply. The SBA

exists to help people like yourself start businesses,

and part of that support includes helping

those who meet its criteria secure the

If, however, you cannot pull together enough

resources to meet your financial goals, you

have 3 choices: You can give up, you can start

the business without enough money, or you can

revise your expectations, for now.

If you’re truly an entrepreneur, giving up isn’t

an option. That will leave only two: going into

business undercapitalized, or reinventing your

dream. If you’re going to proceed intelligently,

there really is no choice. The number one reason

small businesses fail is undercapitalization.

If you’ve projected what it will cost you to succeed,

and you can’t raise enough, you’re in effect

projecting failure.

Still, the can-do spirit of the entrepreneur often

leads to a “damn the torpedoes, full speed

ahead” attitude. The entrepreneur decides to

gamble on her own strength and determination

and intelligence being enough to carry the business

over the obstacle of not having enough

money. While there are people who succeed in

this kind of risk-taking manner, they are few

and far between. The numbers don’t lie, and

neither should you – especially to yourself – especially

when it’s your nest egg at risk. Instead,

take the 3rd option and try to reinvent your

dream to fit your financial resources.

on the type of store,

your space needs, and how

you plan to reach your audience.

But every checklist

should be a detailed accounting

of everything that must be done, broken

down by the month, week, even day leading up

to the big event.

Let’s look at the 2 major items likely to be

on the checklist: inventory & personnel.

SETTING UP YOUR INVENTORY

Your store is all about what it sells. From your

earlier contact with suppliers you should already

know what kind of turnaround they can

give on orders, and the terms available to you.

As soon as you give the contractor the goahead

to start work on the store, get out your

inventory lists of what you plan to sell. Organize

it by source, manufacturer, distributor, or individual

and by product category. Get in touch

with your sales contacts. Tell them your target

opening day, and when you expect to be ready

to take delivery of the products. Ask if they’ll

take your order now and hold the goods at the

warehouse. This is a good idea if you’re entering

any high-demand category as product

shortages do develop. If you haven’t already

worked out the terms of sale, now is the time

to handle that as well.

Finally, request information about any upcoming

advertising programs, promotional campaigns,

or co-op requirements. Request your

contact mail you anything that’s available, immediately.

promotional plans.

Before you’re ready to take delivery on the

goods, you must prepare the space for them in

2 areas of your store: on the sales floor and in

the warehouse. If shelving isn’t part of the renovation

project, determine your needs and

order what’s necessary. The same for display

racks and other floor fixtures. You want to be

ready as soon as the goods arrive.

Next, for your pricing responsibilities. Unless

you plan on your store being one where the

customer who must ask cost has no business

coming in, every item needs to be ticketed with

your selling price. First, ask your suppliers if

they will supply pre-ticketed merchandise.

Some do, for a fee. If not, it’s your responsibility

to go through this rather labor-intensive

process. How you handle this should be based

on whether or not you’ll be using a computer

system for sales and inventory management.

The most difficult part of

setting up a computerized

system is entering all the products

you sell into that system.

Even if you decide to use bar coding for product

ID and price information, you or an employee

must enter a price and description for

every SKU (stock-keeping unit) in the store, as

well as the number of each item you have on

hand.
