The Derg Active project is an integrated economic, health and wellbeing initiative that seeks to deliver new critical
community infrastructure in the town of Castlederg. It aims to have a catalytic impact on the green economic
recovery of the town by providing a targeted response to addressing health inequalities and a lack of adequate
facilities. The project is designed to redress an imbalance in investment in the area and develop good relations
between all the communities who live there. Derg Active will also promote active travel by offering additional
infrastructure that will encourage people to walk and cycle and reap the health and well-being benefits of regular
exercise. Phase one of the project was completed in 2024 and included a high-quality public realm space at the
Diamond in the centre of the village, new play provision and lighting at the Castle Park and enhanced greenway
connectivity at Dergview FC.Work on phase two will begin later this month and is split across four sites, the work is
expected to be completed by Spring 2025 and this monthly newsletter will provide the public with updates on how
the projects are progressing.
Mitchell Park
The redeveloped Mitchell Park
3G floodlit playing pitch will
accommodate competitive standard
soccer matches at all levels, a GAA
junior size pitch and mini-sized
soccer pitches, suitable for youth
football and recreational play.
The project will also include the
construction of a coach education
room and a new outdoor trim trail
will be built adjacent to the new
pitch. Complementary infrastructure
works at the site will include
pathways, upgrade of soft and
hard landscaping, street furniture
and additional parking. E Quinn
Civils from Pomeroy in County
Tyrone have been appointed as the
contractor to complete the work.
Greenway
(adjacent to Dergview FC)
Further enhancements will take place
to recently completed greenway
paths with the installation of Street
lighting and soft landscaping
including street furniture.
Derg Valley Leisure
Centre
Work at the Leisure Centre will
include an extension of the existing
health suite to include and infrared
sauna(s) and ice bath as well as
upgrades to the Steam Room area,
mechanical and electrical upgrades
to the health suite.
Castle Park
Improvements to the Castle Park
site will include upgraded secondary
pathways and new street furniture
that complements the existing
infrastructure. Enhancements will
also be made to the linkage from
the town centre to the Castle Park
facility along Park View Road and
minor improvements are also to
be delivered at the entrance to the
park, including design and options
appraisals for the possible future
installation of Public Toilets. Milligan
Bros from Enniskillen have been
appointed as the contractor to
complete the work.
The Diamond
The works will extend the original
Phase One scheme, which was limited
to the central core of the town,
to include the surrounding outer
footpaths. This phase will introduce
additional planters and street
furniture to enhance visual appeal,
as well as provide new pedestrian
crossings at two key locations within
the town centre. Milligan Bros from
Enniskillen have been appointed as
the contractor to complete the work.
