MAGICMOMENTS

MAGIC MOMENTS LAUNCHES AT SEASON OPENER

Nottingham Forest’s new community initiative, Magic

Moments, enjoyed a memorable debut at the City

Ground on Sunday as 50 incredible individuals from

Teenage Cancer Trust and Switch Up – including

youngsters, families, and carers – were treated to a

day they’ll never forget as they watched Forest beat

Brentford.

Championing the initiative is Club owner Evangelos

Marinakis, whose personal commitment to uplifting

those within Nottinghamshire has driven the creation

of Magic Moments. The programme will see 30

tickets for every home Premier League fixture gifted

to children and young people who face illness,

hardship, or vulnerability, ensuring they can share the

excitement of matchdays at the City Ground.

The afternoon’s guests arrived two hours before kickoff,

where they were greeted by Club staff and each

received the gift of a Nottingham Forest home shirt

to wear proudly throughout the day. Soon after, they

were in prime position to welcome the Forest players

as they arrived at the stadium, offering high-fives and

words of encouragement as the squad stepped off the

team bus.

From there, the group enjoyed a walk through

the iconic players’ tunnel and posed for pitchside

photographs, before soaking up the electric pre-match

atmosphere.

After cheering on the Reds from their seats, the day

concluded with a truly special moment as the guests

met Evangelos Marinakis and goalscorers Chris Wood

and Dan Ndoye after the final whistle. They enjoyed

time for photographs, autographs, and conversations

about the match – the perfect way to round off a

memorable experience.

The on-pitch action matched the magic off it, as the

Reds produced a thrilling display to claim a 3-1 victory

over Brentford. The win ensured that all attendees

were treated not only to a special day behind the

scenes, but also to an exciting afternoon of Premier

League football at the City Ground

Switch Up, a Nottingham-based organisation, works to

empower the city’s young people to break the cycle of

offending, reoffending, gangs, and criminality through

mentorship, physical training, and positive activity

Switch Up Founder and CEO Marcellus Baz said on the

day: “This is absolutely magic and an unforgettable

experience for these kids. I would say 80% of them

have never been to a football match, and already

they are going to remember this moment for the rest

of their lives. This initiative is absolutely fantastic

– it's giving back to those that wouldn't otherwise

experience something like this. This is about

compassion, community, and action. Hats off to Mr

Marinakis for doing initiatives like this for people that

otherwise would have been forgotten.”

Teenage Cancer Trust supports young people

diagnosed with cancer, ensuring they receive

specialist care and emotional support throughout their

journey

Ali, whose stepdaughter Ezmay is currently receiving

care through Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “It was

absolutely amazing – we got to see the ground, the

changing rooms, and we met the players. It’s been

incredibly special. You're not guaranteed to have these

moments again, and you’ve given us – me especially

– a memory for a lifetime, so thank you. Football clubs

are so important to people and it’s so important that

they support local kids. He's [Evangelos Marinakis]

absolutely fantastic and he's going to take us to the

top.”

CLUB NEWS

CLUB TO REMEMBER THE

LATE TERRY HENNESSEY

All at Nottingham Forest were saddened to

learn of the recent passing of former Forest

captain, Terry Hennessey.

The former Wales international made 159

appearances in the Garibaldi between 1965

and 1970 in a career that surpassed 400 league

appearances for three different league clubs.

For his country, Mr. Hennessey earned 39

caps for Wales in an international career that

spanned a decade between 1962 and 1972.

Mr. Hennessey is survived by his two children,

Dean and Samantha and his son-in-law Jim.

Everyone at the Club sends their condolences

to Mr. Hennessey’s family and friends at this

extremely difficult time.

In honour of Mr. Hennessey’s memory, we

will hold a period of applause ahead of this

afternoon's kick-off, when all inside the City

Ground will have the chance to pay their own

respects to our former captain.

DOUGLAS LUIZ DISCUSSES

HIS MOVE TO THE CITY

GROUND AFTER JOINING

NOTTINGHAM FOREST ON

AN INITIAL SEASON-LONG

LOAN DEAL FROM ITALIAN

SIDE, JUVENTUS.

16

17

Douglas Luiz arrives on Trentside with plenty of

Premier League, European and international football

experience across his career.

The Brazilian international joined the Reds on an

initial season-long loan deal from Italian giants

Juventus prior to last weekend’s trip to Crystal

Palace, in a deal which includes a conditional

obligation to become permanent next summer.

Luiz previously spent five years with Aston Villa,

where he competed in English football’s top flight

and helped the Villans to qualify for the UEFA

Champions League for the first time in over 40 years

prior to his move to Turin.

Now, after 12 months in Italy, Luiz returns to English

football with Forest set for a fourth season of

Premier League football alongside our first European

campaign since the mid-1990s.

“I’m really happy, it’s such a big club. I wanted to

come here because I can see the ambition the Club

has. I’m so excited to train and get to playing with

my new teammates.”

Luiz previously appeared in NG2 during his Villa

days, making two appearances at the City Ground in

2022/23 and 2023/24 where Forest took four points

across the two fixtures.

“The first time I played here I could see how difficult

it was! But now I’m on the right side and I have so

much to look forward to.

“I remember saying after my first visits to the City

Ground; the fans are so close to the pitch and how

much of a difference this can make when you’re out

there playing.

“I’m so excited, I watched the game against

Brentford and I could see everyone was giving their

all on the pitch and it built the excitement within me

to get out there with them.

“I’m really happy to be back in the Premier League

because for me, it is the best league in the world.

I have to say thank you to Nottingham Forest for

opening the gate and allowing me to come back. I

join full of confidence and ready to go again.”

Luiz competed in the UEFA Conference League

alongside the regular Premier League campaign

during his time at Villa Park, an experience the

Brazilian believes will benefit him as the Reds will

compete across the Europa League and Premier

League this coming campaign.

“It’s a really good thing, I really enjoy playing in the

Premier League and also the Europa League. I’m just

so excited to start with the team, give my best out

on the pitch in front of our fans.”

Luiz is the fifth Brazilian member of our first team

squad joining, Murillo, Morato and fellow summer

signings Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha in the Forest

ranks, though he has previously met with our no. 4.

“I know of the Brazilian players in the squad, but

I know Morato because we met once because he

came to my Favela in Brazil and he played against my

team. It was crazy because he is so strong and we

had some good battles, but now we’re on the same

team and we’ll fight together for this Club.

“When I saw the Brazilian players that were already

here, it made me more excited to be here.”

The 27-year-old was already looking forward to his

home debut, not long after securing his move to the

City Ground.

“I’ll always try to give my best on the pitch and of

course I’m so excited to meet the fans and play at

the City Ground. I feel like I love the fans already

with the welcome I have received and the messages

they have sent. I can’t wait for the season to come

with Nottingham Forest.”

Division One

RICHARD HARRISON DIPS INTO HIS PROGRAMME COLLECTION

AGAIN AND RECALLS A CHILDHOOD ENCOUNTER WITH THE

HOLDER OF A UNIQUE DISTINCTION.

R

In last season’s series on

memorabilia I didn’t touch on

the subject of autographs, but

over the years my accumulation

of Forest-related ephemera has

included quite a few signed items.

The first Forest autographs I got

hold of date from the school

holidays some time in the 1971/72

season, when I tagged along to the

City Ground with my brother and

some friends to see which players

we could accost after they finished

training. I still have the fifteen

signatures, among them those of

record appearance maker Bob

McKinlay, the prodigiously skilful

Duncan McKenzie and Miracle-

Man-to-be Martin O’Neill.

But these weren’t the first

autographs I ever got. Before our

game against West Ham United

in August 1971 my dad spotted

a famous face not far from us in

the main stand. I was a shy kid,

but he urged me to go and ask

this unexpected celebrity for his

autograph. And so it is that I still

have a rather scruffy page from

that day’s programme with the

words Geoff Hurst scrawled above

the Hammers’ team photo.

I’d not long turned eight years old

when I met him but I knew that

getting Geoff Hurst’s autograph

was something special. Until as

recently as 2022, he held the

unique distinction of having scored

a hat-trick in a World Cup Final.

Seeing as two of Kylian Mbappé's

three goals were penalties I like to

think Hurst’s achievement is still

much the greater (even if goalline

technology might have had

something to say about his second

goal…).

My childhood encounter with a

national sporting hero makes this

an easy choice for a programme

to look at today, so what did we

get for what, six months after

decimalisation, was still described

as “five new pence”?

The eye-catching cover featured

the League Championship trophy

and four action shots showing

the likes of Neil Martin and Peter

Cormack trying to score goals and

Jim Barron and Peter Hindley trying

to keep them out.

As it was the first home game of

the season (we had already lost

at Liverpool and Leicester City),

Chairman Jack Levy made a

rare appearance on the editorial

page. He was looking forward to

a successful season and hoped

to avoid “the injuries which have

plagued us in the past few years”.

In view of what he saw as “the

grossly inflated transfer fees now

prevalent in the game” he stressed

the importance of recruiting future

first team players “from the junior

ranks”.

There was plenty of coverage

of our visitors, with the

aforementioned team photo,

two and a half pages of player

profiles and a feature on how the

Hammers were “a pretty puzzling

combination”. This assessment

contrasted their unspectacular

league form (their ten-year record

showed finishes between 8th and

20th place) and their having “some

of the game’s best players” and,

in manager Ron Greenwood, “one

of the game’s finest theorists”.

There was also a tribute to Jimmy

Greaves, latterly of West Ham, on

his retirement from league football,

though there is a certain undertone

of relief, seeing as he scored no

fewer than 25 of his 491 career

goals against us.

In the new-season photo of our

first team squad the players were

resplendent in the popular turn-ofthe-70s

kit with its striped collar

and cuffs. Some of them were

clearly highly amused at something

while others were taking it all more

seriously. Among them, seated on

the grass alongside McKenzie, was

a young John Robertson.

Elsewhere, ticket details and prices

were given for all the First Division

clubs, with seats generally ranging

from about 60p to £1. Our own

24

BY

RICHARD

HARRISON

FOREST

EVIEWED

seats were available for 75p in the

Main (now Peter Taylor) Stand and

60p in the East Stand.

Peter Cormack was the subject of

the “Introducing” feature. Among

all the standard answers (he liked

prawn cocktail and steak, disliked

losing games and wanted to have

his own business…) he nominated

Turf Moor as “Worst away ground”.

I’m not sure what kind of traumas

our players had suffered at Burnley

but throughout the season they

were almost unanimous in giving

that answer.

The adverts in the programme

were very much of their time, with

competing businesses hoping to

attract our supporters to their beer

(Home Brewery, Shipstone and

Ind Coope’s Double Diamond),

coach transport (Skills and Trent)

and even career opportunities (the

National Coal Board and the Royal

Navy).

Unfortunately, Chairman Levy

didn’t get the successful season he

had hoped for. Although we won

this game in exactly the same way

as we had the previous season’s

encounter – by a single 44thminute

goal from Ian Storey-Moore

- we would only win seven more

games all season. After fifteen

years in the top flight we were

relegated along with Huddersfield

Town, while West Ham finished in

14th place.

UNBEATEN STARTS

Nottingham Forest B Team maintained our

unbeaten start to the 2025/26 campaign with a

2-2 draw against Arsenal earlier this week.

Josh Bowler’s quickfire first half brace gave

the Reds a 2-0 lead against the Gunners at

Loughborough University Stadium before the side

from North London fought back to claim a point

from the Premier League 2 clash.

Charles Sagoe Jr and Seb Ferdinand netted in the

second half to bring the visitors level, ensuring the

Reds took a share of the spoils and keep up Warren

Joyce’s side’s unbeaten start in PL2.

On matchday one, Archie Whitehall’s solitary strike

was enough for the young Reds to claim maximum

points against West Ham United at Rush Green.

The Forest midfielder capitalised on a defensive

error from the Hammers to net the game’s only

goal.

Forest travelled to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday

afternoon and are next in action on Tuesday week

when the young Reds begin the 2025/26 Vertu

Trophy campaign with a trip to Prenton Park with

Tranmere Rovers the opposition on Tuesday 9

September.

The following Saturday, our Premier League

International Cup campaign gets underway with

Dinamo Zagreb the Reds’ opening opponents.

Our Under-18s meanwhile, have enjoyed a fine

start to the Under-18 Premier League campaign

with successive 2-0 wins against Derby County and

Stoke City on the road, putting the Reds firmly in

the top four of the table.

Yesterday, Forest travelled to take on Everton at

Finch Farm in what will be our third successive

away fixture of the campaign.

Our first home match of the campaign is set for

Saturday 27 September with kick-off at the Nigel

Doughty Academy pencilled in for 11am.

NEWS

OWEN COYLE, PLAYER PATHWAYS MANAGER,

PROVIDES AN IN-DEPTH UPDATE ON THE YOUNG

FOREST PLAYERS CURRENTLY ENJOYING LOAN

SPELLS ACROSS THE EFL AND SCOTLAND

THIS SEASON.

44

Owen Coyle

Player Pathways Manager

Last season, we saw a number of

our young players prosper on loan

across the EFL and the benefits

these moves can have on a young

player’s career.

This season is no different; currently

five of our B Team players are

enjoying loan spells in the EFL and

Scottish Premiership, with each

of them either playing a key role

during their first month, or making

strides towards returning from

injury to play an important part in

the remainder of the campaign.

Jamie McDonnell and Kyle McAdam

are currently enjoying loan

spells with League One side Mansfield

Town, under the management

of our Club’s all-time top goalscorer,

Nigel Clough.

Jamie has completed the full 90

minutes in each of their last four

League One fixtures, scoring both

goals in the Stags 2-0 win against

Blackpool earlier in the month. He

is quickly becoming a key player

for Mansfield and his progress is

delightful to see.

Kyle has also enjoyed regular minutes

for the Stags, gaining valuable

minutes on the field in all of their

matches. Unfortunately, he missed

their match against Leyton Orient

recently with a minor injury.

Joe Gardner enjoyed a fruitful spell

with Lincoln City last season, and

has this season joined Jamie and

Kyle on loan with Mansfield.

Unfortunately, Joe sustained an

injury during pre-season and is yet

to make his debut for the Stags,

but behind the scenes he is continuing

to work hard and build up

his fitness to make a return to first

team football.

While he isn’t playing at the

minute, he is learning about the importance

of recovery and we have

no doubt he will return a better

player and play a crucial role in the

remainder of the season.

In League Two, Josh Powell is

currently on loan with Colchester

United, and his progress has been a

joy to watch.

Since making his EFL debut and

earning plaudits in the Carabao

Cup against Championship opposition

in Oxford United, Josh has

been a regular for the U’s.

He has played two full 90 minutes

in the league at the time of writing

and we’ll no doubt continue to see

his minutes rise over the coming

months.

This move strengthens our already

strong partnership with the League

Two side. Academy graduate Ben

Perry joined them permanently

this summer and Jamie McDonnell

spent last season on loan there

under former Forest Academy

graduate Aaron Donnelly.

Esapa Osong has joined Motherwell

on loan for the season, and

made his debut in the Scottish

League Cup as the Well recorded

a 1-0 win over St Johnstone. He

played 42 valuable minutes just 24

hours after his move to Scotland

was confirmed, it was great to

see Esapa directly involved in the

action.

He came off the bench in the final

match before these notes were

produced in the Scottish Premiership

during a 3-3 draw against

Hearts. Playing in that atmosphere

at Tynecastle can be tricky for even

the most experienced of pros, but

for Esapa to have done so at such a

young age is a real credit to him.

It’s really exciting to see the progress

our young players are making

at their respective clubs and we’ll

keep providing them with the

encouragement and support they

need to achieve their respect goals

this season.

FOREST

WOMEN

ROSE &

ROWE

JOIN

THE

REDS

Forest Women have welcomed a plethora of new

signings ahead of their inaugural season in the

WSL2 with eight new faces through the door.

Midfielder Rachel Rowe joined the Club on a two-year

deal from WSL2 side Southampton as the Reds’ ninth

signing of the summer transfer window.

Rowe started her career at Swansea City before

moving to local rivals Cardiff City where the

midfielder made her senior debut in their title-winning

campaign in 2012/13.

In 2015, Rowe made the switch across borders to then

WSL2 outfit Reading; in her maiden campaign with

the Royals, the midfielder would help her side achieve

promotion to the Women’s Super League.

After a nine-year stint and over a century of

appearances, Rowe left Reading to join Scottish

Premier League side Rangers and after a season in

Scotland, Rowe returned to England – signing for

WSL2’s Southampton.

On the international stage, Rowe has represented

Wales on over 75 occasions featuring in all three Euro

2025 group stage fixtures in Wales’ first-ever major

tournament appearance.

Forward Deanne Rose, who was most recently at

Women’s Super League side Leicester City, joined the

Club on a one-year deal.

Rose started her career playing college football for

Florida Gators, scoring 19 times in 51 appearances. In

2021, the forward was selected 10th overall in the 2021

NWSL draft by North Carolina Courage.

After a brief stint playing in Canada, Rose joined WSL

outfit Reading where the forward would feature 24

times for the Royals scoring 4 goals.

In 2023, Rose signed for fellow WSL side Leicester

City, staying with the Midlands side for two years

before her move to Nottingham this summer.

Rose made her international debut for Canada as a

16-year-old and has since represented the Canucks 88

times and played a pivotal role in the team that won

the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

COMMUNITY

MATTERS

FOREST FEED

EVEN MORE

NOTTINGHAM

CHILDREN

Nottingham Forest Community

Trust has once again brought

fun, learning and nutritious

food to young people across the

city through this year’s Holiday

Activities and Food (HAF)

programme.

Funded by the UK Government and

administered locally by Nottingham

City Council, the HAF programme

provides children and young

people with access to free holiday

clubs offering a mix of sport,

creative activities, enrichment

opportunities and healthy meals.

The scheme is designed to support

families during the school holidays,

helping to combat holiday hunger

while keeping children active,

engaged and connected with their

communities.

Since first delivering HAF in 2021,

Nottingham Forest Community

Trust has become a key provider

in Nottingham, offering inclusive,

high-quality programmes that bring

lasting benefits to participants and

their families.

This summer, the Trust delivered

HAF across five venues in The

Meadows, Clifton, Bestwood,

Radford and St Ann’s, working

alongside schools, community

groups and activity providers

to create a safe and welcoming

environment for all.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

FOR CHILDREN AND

FAMILIES

The impact of the programme

goes far beyond the activities

themselves. For children, it

provides the chance to try new

experiences, build confidence,

develop friendships and stay active

during the long summer break. For

families, particularly those facing

financial challenges, it can be a

lifeline, ensuring children have

structured activities that relieve the

pressure on household budgets.

The summer holidays can be

a particularly difficult time for

parents and carers, with increased

childcare needs, additional food

costs and limited affordable

opportunities for young people.

The HAF programme helps to

bridge this gap, offering peace of

mind to families who know their

children are safe, happy, well-fed

and engaged in positive activities.

Parents have shared how much

they value the opportunity for

their children to learn new skills,

Tom Norton, Head of Programmes

at Nottingham Forest Community

Trust, said: “The HAF programme

has built real momentum over the

past few years and is creating a

lasting legacy for communities

GREG’S ULTRAMARATHON CHALLENGE

FOR TWO INCREDIBLE CAUSES.

10 ULTRAMARATHONS IN 10 DAYS - RUNNING FOR A REASON

Last year, I ran seven marathons

in seven days — a challenge that

pushed me to the edge physically

and mentally. This year, I’m going

even further.

Starting on August 28, I’ll be

running 10 ultramarathons in

10 consecutive days, covering

over 300 miles from Newbury to

Newcastle, finishing with the iconic

Great North Run.

Along the way, I’ll be stopping at

football stadiums that represent

resilience, community, and pride

— and I’m incredibly proud that

one of those stops will be at the

City Ground, on matchday for

Nottingham Forest vs West Ham,

as part of day four of the journey.

As a lifelong Forest fan, running

into Nottingham on matchday will

be one of the most emotional and

motivating moments of the entire

challenge. There’s nowhere else

that feels quite like home.

I’m taking on this challenge to

raise money for two charities that

are deeply personal: Alzheimer’s

Research UK and Sophie’s Journey.

Alzheimer’s doesn’t just take away

the people we love — it takes them

piece by piece. Watching someone

you care about slowly lose their

memories, their voice, their sense

of self… it’s utterly heartbreaking.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is leading

the fight to change that, through

groundbreaking research and

tireless advocacy.

Sophie’s Journey, inspired by the

life of a courageous young girl,

gives children with cancer and

their families something truly

precious: time. Time to smile, to

escape hospital walls, to simply be

together. The holidays they provide

create lasting memories in the face

of unimaginable challenges.

Both of these charities are born

from love, shaped by loss, and

powered by hope. Compared to

what the families they support go

through, my pain is temporary.

They don’t get to give up — and

neither will I.

If you can, please consider

supporting the challenge by

donating, sharing, or simply

following along. Every step I take is

for someone who can’t.

On August 31, I’ll arrive at the City

Ground with tired legs, a full heart

— and the roar of Forest behind

me.

Let’s go further, for those who

can’t.

Let’s run for change.

arrival at London Stadium in

January.

The Hammers started the campaign with Julen

Lopetegui at the helm, with seven points separating

West Ham from the relegation places in January, a

change was made of Potter was drafted in.

Work immediately started on the squad towards the end

of last season when it was confirmed long-serving trio

Łukasz Fabianski, Aaron Cresswell and Vladimír Coufal

would all depart the club following the conclusions of

their respective contracts.

Kurt Zouma, Danny Ings and Michail Antonio also

departed the Hammers, alongside Mohammed Kudus,

who moved across London to join Tottenham Hotspur.

There have been five arrivals to date with Jean-Clair

Todibo, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Mads Hermansen, Kyle

Walker-Peters and Callum Wilson all checking in at

London Stadium.

The Hammers started the current campaign with a

difficult test against newly promoted Sunderland at the

Stadium of Light where goals from Eliezer Mayenda,

Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor recorded three points for

the Black Cats on matchday one.

Graham Potter’s side welcomed Chelsea to London

Stadium in their first home fixture of the new season,

with the proceedings getting off to the perfect start for

the Hammers when Lucas Paquetá opened the scoring

on six minutes.

THE COACH

GRAHAM

POTTER

Graham Potter returned to Premier League

management following almost two seasons

out of the game when he was named the

new Head Coach of West Ham United

earlier this year in January.

His first triumph in charge at London Stadium was a 3-2 win against Fulham in

just his second match in the dugout.

After his playing days came to an end, Potter moved into management, taking

his first role with the now disbanded Leeds Carnegie in 2008, spending three

years at the West Yorkshire side.

Then Swedish fourth division side Östersund was Potter’s next destination

when he started work in January 2011.

The former Swansea City boss made a big impact during his time in Sweden,

guiding ÖFK to back-to-back promotions, then to the Swedish top flight for

the first time in their history in 2015.

By 2017, Östersund had qualified for the UEFA Europa League after winning

the Svenska Cupen, eventually going out of the competition at the hands of

Arsenal despite a 2-1 win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

After his successes in Sweden became more widely known, Potter moved

to South Wales in 2018, becoming the new Head Coach of Swansea City

following their relegation from the Premier League.

The 50-year-old steadied the ship at Swansea, guiding the club to a 10th place

finish in his first campaign with the club, despite going into the final three

games of the season with an outside chance of reaching the play-off places.

Such was his immediate impact in the EFL, Brighton & Hove Albion swooped

to make Potter their new Head Coach in May 2019, improving the Seagulls

year on year and helping the club to its highest points tally and final league

standing since winning promotion to the Premier League.

September 2022 saw Potter approached and subsequently appointed the

Head Coach of Chelsea where he would oversee 31 games in total before

leaving Stamford Bridge the following April.

Potter returned to football management in January of this year when he

accepted the Head Coach’s positions with the Hammers.

DEFENDER

AGE: 25

SIGNED FROM: LEICESTER CITY

After spending the previous campaign on loan at London Stadium, Jean-

Clair Todibo made the move permanent during the summer transfer

window. The central defender was a regular for the Hammers during his

loan spell in East London making 29 appearances in all competitions,

playing for a total of 1,968 minutes for the club.

After two seasons and over 70 appearances for Leicester City, in which he

kept 14 clean sheets, Mads Hermansen’s services were acquired by West

Ham United this summer with the Danish stopper going straight into the

Hammers’ starting XI for their first two matches of the campaign.

DEFENDER

AGE: 20

SIGNED FROM: SLAVIA PRAGUE

Kyle Walker-Peters returned to the capital, joining West Ham United

following his previous club, Southampton’s relegation from the Premier

League. Walker-Peters progressed through the Tottenham Hotspur

Academy to the first team in North London before departing for the

south coast permanently in 2020 following a loan spell at St. Mary’s.

JEAN-CLAIR

TODIBO

El Haji Malick Diouf was a regular for Slavia Prague last season, appearing

41 times across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals and four

assists from the Czechia side’s left flank. West Ham swooped for his

services in July, acquiring him for a reported fee of £19million.

career total to 141 in close to 400 career appearances.

THE LOW-DOWN

Steve Blowers of the Newham Recorder, long-standing

contributor to the official West Ham United matchday

programme and author of Nearly Reached the Sky – West Ham

United 1989-2005 gives us the low-down on our visitors from East

London and their season so far.

What have you made of West

Ham’s start to the season so far?

Carabao Cup aside, we’re only two Premier

League matches into 2025/26 and it’s

certainly been a sorry start with dismal,

disappointing defeats at newly promoted

Sunderland (0-3) and then at home to Chelsea

(1-5) last Friday. After narrowly losing

to Manchester United (1-2) in the Premier

League Summer Series and then going on

to beat Everton (2-1) and AFC Bournemouth

(2-0) the Hammers had returned from the

United States with a fair degree of optimism.

Following another draw with LOSC

Lille (1-1) in their final pre-season friendly at

London Stadium, there was little to suggest

that that those two capitulations were

coming down the track.

What’s the feeling among the fanbase

currently?

It’s a cocktail of fear and frustration. Sure,

there’s still a long way to go until next May,

of course, but West Ham need to click

into gear – and soon – if the current squad

are to avoid a sorry, confidence-sapping

season of struggle. That’s the fear-factor

right now. There’s been a real sense of

frustration lamenting the lack of serious

summer activity, too.

What have you made of West

Ham’s summer signings so far?

Underwhelming! Last season, the Hammers

spent some £135m across nine new arrivals

but with the transfer window slamming

shut tomorrow night - at the time of writing

- funds seem to be in shorter supply this

time around. The Club appears to be

paying the price for that expensive 2024/25

scatter-gun splurge. Aged 20, Senegal

international left-back El Hadji Malick

Diouf has made an encouraging start,

albeit the jury remains out on goalkeeper

Mads Hermansen and previously on-loan

Jean-Clair Todibo following his permanent

move. Providing he maintains his fitness, at

33, Callum Wilson is still capable of finding

the net, while fellow-free transfer, Kyle

Walker-Peters adds a degree of depth to a

very thin squad.

What do you think is achievable

this season?

Having sold Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham

Hotspur (£55m) and allowed Edson

Álvarez to join Fenerbahçe on-loan, senior,

seasoned professionals Aaron Cresswell,

Vladimír Coufal, Łukasz Fabianski, Danny

Ings and former Forest striker Michail

Antonio have also been released. West

Ham United are in a period of transition.

Despite those two opening defeats against

Sunderland and Chelsea, a top 10 finish

is still eminently possible but as Graham

Potter said last Friday: ‘We’ve got to look

for solutions, stick together and fight.’

The Claret & Blue army will be hoping that

starts this afternoon.

What do you think the expectation

for West Ham should be this

season?

Sadly, the days of a 2023 UEFA Europa

Conference League triumph sandwiched

between two enthralling UEFA Europa

League campaigns are becoming dim and

distant memories now. Given how other

clubs have strengthened throughout the

summer, European qualification would be

a massive ask for this current squad – an

honest tilt at a domestic cup run and a

top-half finish is, realistically, the best most

Hammers supporters could ask for now.

What have you made of Graham

Potter’s time in charge of the Hammers

to date?

After taking over from Julen Lopetegui,

Graham Potter observed: ‘You don’t turn

up at a football club in January unless

something needs fixing.’ In 14th-spot - just

seven points above the drop-zone - he had

inherited an ageing, disjointed and disconnected

squad from the Spaniard. Eventually

finishing in that same 14th-place having

dispelled all lingering fears of relegation,

Potter achieved his primary objective but

with a disappointing record of just five wins

and five draws from his first 20 games at

the Hammers helm, the natives are now

getting restless. An intelligent and diligent

coach, he knows the size of the task in

hand but needs both time plus similar

financial support to that enjoyed by his

predecessor. Given the right tools, Potter

can certainly complete that fix and bring

good times back to West Ham United.

Finally, what do you think the final

score will be at the City Ground?

After a hat-trick of Premier League defeats

at Forest, the Hammers can, hopefully,

start to get their 2025/26 campaign back

on the road with a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know these unusual and

unique facts about our visitors

from East London?

HIGH FLYING

HAMMERS

West Ham United is one of

eight clubs in England that

have never dropped below the

second tier of English football.

They spent 66 of 98 league

seasons in the top flight.

IRONS, IRONS!

West Ham’s widely recognised

nicknames, "the Hammers"

and "the Irons," stem from

the club's initial ties to the

Thames Ironworks and

Shipbuilding Company where

it originated.

WORLD RECORD

WEST HAM

West Ham's official mascot,

Hammerhead, set a rather

unique record. In May 2025,

Hammerhead achieved the

Guinness World Record

for the most consecutive

football touches by a mascot,

completing 36 touches and

smashing the previous record

by 16.

FOREVER BLOWING

BUBBLES

The club's anthem, "I'm

Forever Blowing Bubbles,"

was adopted because a

schoolboy player nicknamed

"Bubbles" resembled a boy in

a Pears Soap advertisement.

Fans still sing the song before

matches to this day.

THE WEST HAM PALS

The 13th (Service) Battalion (West Ham) of the Essex Regiment,

formed during WWI, was largely composed of West Ham players

and supporters. They shouted "Up the Hammers!" in battle.
