EDITOR'S

NOTE

Fresh off the heels of Malaysia’s Independence Day,

we find ourselves feeling nostalgic and deeply proud

of our heritage and history. This September–October

2025 issue of Tropicana Lifestyle is a tribute to where

we came from, and a celebration of how far we’ve come.

We begin with a strong cover story in our TOTAL

section, featuring none other than Dato’ Sri Meer

Habib. He reflects on the inspiring journey of his

homegrown jewellery brand – Habib – from its early

beginnings to its remarkable growth in retail, while

offering a glimpse of what lies ahead.

Over in TASTE, we step back in time to rediscover

Malaysia’s oldest restaurants that are still thriving

today. From a classic steakhouse to beloved nasi

kandar, these culinary icons continue to serve

generations with flavours steeped in history.

In TREASURE, we shine a spotlight on Tropicana

Cenang, nestled within Langkawi’s UNESCO Global

Geopark. With its rich heritage, natural beauty, and

investment potential, this destination makes every

day feel like a holiday.

– timeless icons reimagined to reflect our evolving

global heritage.

In TREND, American heritage takes centre stage

through interior décor with Ralph Lauren Home. From

estate elegance to canyon chic and palatial palazzoinspired

pieces, there’s a style for every aesthetic.

Our THRIVE section celebrates wellness and nature.

We journey through the world’s three oldest national

parks, marvel at their rugged beauty, and uncover the

lifestyle habits of centenarians that inspire healthier,

longer lives.

And finally, in TALK, we revisit the OFFLINE 16 Flagship

Event held at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort. In

collaboration with VitaHealth, the event championed

mental wellness through energising activities such as

pickleball, hiking, piloxing, and more.

This issue is both a look back at history and a guide to

building a brighter, healthier future. May it inspire you

to reflect, recharge, and reimagine what lies ahead.

Expanding our horizons in TRAVEL, we explore the

WONDERS

REIMAGINED

From ancient marvels to jaw-dropping

modern icons — discover the 8 Wonders

that will change the way you see the world!

For centuries, travellers have been fascinated by the world’s most

remarkable landmarks—each telling stories of ancient civilisations,

engineering brilliance, and spiritual devotion. There has always

been debate about how many “Wonders of the World” there truly

are, and which sites deserve a place on the official list. Today, the

most recognised version features the New 8 Wonders of the World.

Built by ancient and medieval empires, these wonders are now

among the most visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world,

offering unforgettable experiences to anyone who sets foot there.

CHRIST THE REDEEMER – BRAZIL

Towering above Rio de Janeiro at 125 feet tall, Christ the Redeemer

is an iconic symbol of peace and faith. Completed in 1931 and

perched on Mount Corcovado, this Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ

offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. It

can be visited year-round and whether by taxi, train, or organised

tour, it’s an essential stop for anyone visiting Brazil.

ANGKOR WAT – CAMBODIA

Recently named the eighth official Wonder of the World, Angkor Wat

is the largest religious structure on Earth, covering over 160 hectares in

Cambodia. Originally built in the 12th century as a Hindu temple dedicated

to Vishnu, it later became a symbol of both Hindu and Buddhist faiths.

Visitors are drawn to its vast scale and harmonious design. Siem Reap is

the main gateway to Angkor Wat, with many guided tours available to

help you explore its temples and hidden gems.

PETRA – JORDAN

Often called the Rose City due to the pink hues of its stone, Petra

is one of the world’s most captivating archaeological sites. Carved

directly into the desert cliffs by the Nabataeans, its grand façades,

especially the famous Treasury, continue to amaze travellers. The

best time to visit is in spring or late autumn, when temperatures

are mild and the crowds are smaller. From Amman, Jordan’s capital,

Petra is a three-hour drive via the Desert Highway, and most guided

tours include this unforgettable destination on their itinerary.

CHICHÉN ITZÁ – MEXICO

Located in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Chichén Itzá was a major city of the

Mayan civilisation and remains one of the most important archaeological

sites in the Americas. El Castillo, the Temple of the Warriors, and the

ancient observatory El Caracol are just a few of the stunning structures

to explore. Visit between November and March for the best weather, or

in October for fewer visitors. You can reach it via public bus or organised

tours from Cancun, Tulum, or any resort in the Riviera Maya.

THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA – CHINA

Extending across northern China for more than 20,000 kilometres,

the Great Wall is one of the most impressive engineering

achievements in history. Originally built to defend against

invasions, it now attracts millions of visitors eager to walk along

its ancient pathways. March to August offers the best weather for

exploring, though it can be hazy during the summer. The wall is

best accessed from Beijing, and taking a guided tour is highly

recommended for a smooth and informative visit.

MACHU PICCHU – PERU

Hidden in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu is a spectacular

Inca city surrounded by lush greenery and misty peaks. This

15th-century site is admired for its breathtaking location and

stonework. Travellers should aim to visit during the dry season.

Getting there involves flying to Lima, then Cusco, followed by a

journey to Aguas Calientes and a bus ride to the site—or, for a

more immersive experience, hiking the famous Inca Trail.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

15

THE COLOSSEUM – ITALY

Standing proudly in the heart of Rome, the Colosseum is the

largest amphitheatre ever built and a powerful symbol of ancient

Roman ingenuity. Once the stage for gladiator battles and public

spectacles, it still captures the imagination today. The low season

(November to February) is the best time to avoid heavy crowds,

and tickets should be booked in advance. Easily reached from

anywhere in Rome, the Colosseum is also near other historical

attractions like the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

THE TAJ MAHAL – INDIA

Built as a symbol of eternal love by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan,

the Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful monuments ever

created. Located in Agra, India, this white marble mausoleum

reflects stunning craftsmanship and emotional history. The best

time to go is between March and June, and weekdays are quieter.

Trains and road links from Delhi and other parts of Rajasthan make

it easy to access, though we recommend spending a night in Agra

and visiting at sunrise for a truly magical experience.

Whether carved into desert cliffs, perched atop mountains, or rising

from lush jungles, the New 8 Wonders of the World represent the

height of human imagination, skill, and devotion. Each destination

offers not only spectacular sights but also a deeper connection to

history, culture, and the enduring legacy of civilisations past.

Clockwise from left: Machu Picchu is among the greatest artistic,

architectural and land use achievements anywhere and the most significant

tangible legacy of the Inca civilization; Taj Mahal, an immense mausoleum

of white marble, built in Agra between 1631 and 1648 by order of the Mughal

emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife; Colosseum is the

largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing

amphitheatre in the world, despite its age

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP (THE BRITISH OPEN)

Since 1860

Often considered the grandfather of all golf tournaments.

The British Open was first played at Prestwick Golf Club in

1860 with just eight players. It has since evolved into one of

golf’s four majors and remains the only one played outside

the United States. Known for its challenging links courses,

like St Andrews and Royal Troon, the tournament is steeped

in tradition, from the battle for the Claret Jug to the honour

of being named “Champion Golfer of the Year.” Its windswept

fairways and coastal drama continue to define the

soul of the sport.

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP (THE BRITISH AMATEUR)

Since 1885

Established at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 1885, it is one

of the oldest and most respected events in amateur golf,

once considered a major in the early 20th century. While

professionals dominate today’s headlines, this tournament

remains a benchmark for emerging talent. Winners like

Bobby Jones cemented its place in golf lore, and it still

attracts elite amateurs from around the world vying for a

coveted spot in The Open.

ALL-INDIA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Since 1892

Held by the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (the oldest outside

Britain), this is one of the oldest amateur golf tournaments

in the world and Asia’s most historic. Originally played by

British officers and Indian elites, the tournament has grown to

become a symbol of India’s deep and enduring golfing roots.

U.S. OPEN

Since 1895

The United States Golf Association (USGA) launched the U.S.

Open in 1895 at Newport Country Club with just 11 players

and 36 holes in one day. It quickly rose to major status,

revered for its demanding course setups and reputation as

the toughest test in golf. Champions like Tiger Woods, Rory

McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka have all battled its thick rough

and fast greens. Despite its American origins, the U.S. Open

holds global clout as a true test of resilience and precision.

RBC CANADIAN OPEN

Since 1904

As the third-oldest continuously running national open,

the RBC Canadian Open debuted in 1904 at the Royal

Montreal Golf Club. Though often overshadowed by its

American and British counterparts, it boasts an impressive

roster of winners from Sam Snead to Rory McIlroy. The

tournament is celebrated for its passionate local crowd and

for showcasing Canada’s best courses. It remains a vital

stop on the PGA Tour and a point of pride in Canadian

sporting history.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Since 1904

One of the oldest national opens in the Southern

Hemisphere, the Australian Open has attracted legends

like Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Jordan Spieth. Played

across Australia’s most iconic courses, it’s a tournament

that combines world-class competition with dramatic

landscapes. Its timing makes it a crucial testing ground

for international players heading into or out of their peak

Step Back in Time with

Malaysia’s Longest-Running

Restaurants

Malaysia is not just a melting pot of cultures—it’s also home to some truly legendary restaurants

that have stood the test of time. These places have been feeding Malaysians for decades, with

recipes passed down through generations and interiors that echo stories of the past. From

colonial cafés to hearty kopitiams and spice-filled kitchens, these eateries serve more than just

food—they serve history on a plate.

Let’s take a journey through some of the oldest restaurants in Malaysia that continue to win

hearts and appetites.

COLISEUM CAFÉ, KUALA LUMPUR

Walking into Coliseum Café feels like stepping into a black-and-white film set in British Malaya.

This charming eatery has been around since 1921 and still holds on to its colonial-era look—

complete with old wooden chairs, vintage ceiling fans, and waiters in crisp white uniforms.

Known for its sizzling steaks and classic Western fare, the café has become a landmark in KL.

It even earned a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records as the oldest Western colonial-themed

restaurant in the country.

Come here for the food, but stay for the nostalgia.

HAMEEDIYAH RESTAURANT, PENANG

Tucked in the heart of Penang, Hameediyah has been dishing out

legendary nasi kandar since 1907. That’s over a century of rich,

spicy curries and fluffy rice! Locals and tourists alike queue up for a

taste of their signature dishes like mutton curry, ayam ros, and beef

rendang. The restaurant has a simple, no-fuss setting—but the food

is the real showstopper.

If you're in Penang and want to taste history, Hameediyah is the

place to be.

YUT KEE RESTAURANT, KUALA LUMPUR

A true KL treasure, Yut Kee is a traditional Hainanese kopitiam that

has been family-run since 1928. The atmosphere is lively, the tables

are always full, and the smell of fresh coffee and roasted pork fills

the air. People come from far and wide for their famous roti babi,

Hainanese chicken chop, and kaya toast. The restaurant recently

moved from its original location but kept the same old soul—and, of

course, the same delicious recipes.

It's a living piece of KL's food history, best enjoyed with a cup of

hot kopi.

OLD CHINA CAFÉ, KUALA LUMPUR

Tucked away in a pre-war shophouse in Chinatown, Old China Café is

like a museum that serves Peranakan food. The wooden doors still have

the original swing bar, the mirrors are antique, and the dishes are full

of Nyonya flavours—a blend of Chinese and Malay cooking traditions.

Signature dishes like ayam pongteh, otak-otak, and pai tee are made

using age-old recipes that capture the essence of this unique cuisine.

It’s the perfect spot for a quiet lunch or dinner with a side of heritage.

SEK YUEN RESTAURANT, KUALA LUMPUR

Sek Yuen, which opened in 1953, is a name every lover of traditional

Cantonese food in KL will recognise. The restaurant is famous for

doing things the old-school way—many dishes are still cooked over

a wood fire! With its old tiled floors and retro signboards, Sek Yuen

has hardly changed in decades, and that's exactly what makes it

special. From crispy roast duck to stir-fried noodles, every bite is

filled with flavour and history.

A must-visit for anyone wanting to taste the golden age of

Cantonese cuisine.

These long-standing restaurants are more than just places to

eat—they're living stories of Malaysia’s diverse and delicious food

culture. They remind us that while food trends may come and go,

some flavours are simply timeless.

So next time you're in town, why not skip the new cafés and dine

somewhere where the walls have stories and the recipes haven’t

changed in decades? You’ll not only enjoy a great meal—you’ll

savour a slice of Malaysian history.

ELEGANCE

From Penthouse Glam to Western Charm,

Ralph Lauren Home's Showcase at

Milan Design Week Will Leave

You Dreaming in Style

Ralph Lauren brought a touch of classic American charm to Milan Design Week

with a special showcase of his Home Collection – a celebration of over 40 years of

style, storytelling and craftsmanship. Held at the elegant Palazzo Ralph Lauren,

this presentation captured the designer’s famous lifestyle approach through a

gallery of signature "worlds" that reflect his cinematic vision.

From a glamourous city penthouse to a peaceful island retreat, and from the

luxury of an English estate to the rugged spirit of the American West, each

space told its own story. Alongside these iconic styles, Ralph Lauren also

introduced the new Fall 2025 Canyon Road Collection – a fresh take inspired by

the landscapes, heritage, and traditions of the American West.

The exhibition felt like walking through scenes from a classic film, with every

room styled in true Ralph Lauren fashion – full of character, detail and timeless

elegance. All furniture pieces are made to order in Italy, reflecting the brand’s

close partnership with Haworth Lifestyle. Together, they focus on using highquality

materials and expert craftsmanship to create designs that are made to

last.

ESTATE – CLASSIC ENGLISH ELEGANCE

The Estate lifestyle is inspired by the beauty of an English country house. Think

deep wooden furniture, soft floral fabrics, and timeless charm. The Clivedon

Tufted Bed, made from mahogany and wrapped in soft leather, and the handpainted

Heiress Dresser show off Ralph Lauren’s love for detail. The room brings

together florals, paisleys, stripes and tartans – creating a warm and welcoming

atmosphere that feels both traditional and fresh.

Salon Sofa in soft linen offer quiet luxury. Splashes of colour like turquoise and

PENTHOUSE – CITY STYLE WITH GLAM

Sophisticated and modern, the Penthouse lifestyle captures the energy of a city

apartment. Sleek lines, rich materials and bold design choices make this space

stand out. The standout piece? The carbon fibre RL-CF1 chairs inspired by Mr.

Lauren’s McLaren F1 race car – paired with a beautiful Art Deco-style rosewood

Duke Dining Table. It’s modern luxury at its best.

WESTERN – THE SPIRIT OF THE AMERICAN WEST

The Western lifestyle celebrates rugged beauty and heritage craftsmanship.

Under a chandelier made from naturally shed antlers, four leather chairs

feature fabrics inspired by traditional Navajo weaving. This is part of the Artist

in Residence collaboration with Diné (Navajo) textile artists Naiomi and Tyler

Glasses, blending culture, history and design.

INTRODUCING THE CANYON ROAD COLLECTION

The new Canyon Road Collection continues the story of the American West. With

clean lines and natural materials like oak and hand-burnished saddle leather, the

furniture feels both grounded and refined. Pieces like the Canyon Road Dining

Table and Console show off beautiful joinery and finishing touches like brass

nailheads, giving everything a handcrafted feel.

The Artist in Residence programme is part of Ralph Lauren’s

goal to move beyond simply taking inspiration, and instead work

directly with the artisans who keep heritage crafts alive. After a

successful partnership with Naiomi Glasses for the Polo Ralph

Lauren x Naiomi Glasses collection, she now returns with her

brother Tyler to co-create pieces for the Home collection.

Their work includes fabrics, rugs and accessories that reflect

Navajo culture and traditional weaving – passed down from

their late grandmother and deeply connected to their homeland,

Dinétah (Navajo Nation).

Through this showcase, Ralph Lauren reminded the world why his

name continues to stand for style that lasts – built not only on

THE DAREDEVIL GRANDPA

Tom Cruise is in his 60s but still running, jumping, and doing his own

stunts. Seriously, this guy has more energy than kids at a birthday

party. You’d think he makan tongkat Ali every morning! From Top Gun

to Mission: Impossible, he’s still the action hero we all enjoy watching.

THAT PRETTY WOMAN SMILE

Julia Robert’s smile can still melt hearts – just like back in the Pretty

Woman days. She’s funny, friendly, and still doing movies that make

us feel warm inside. Watching her is like meeting an old friend who

never changed – always nice, always glowing.

HOLLYWOOD’S NICE GUY

Keanu Reeves is the kind of guy who helps you carry your groceries

and says thank you to everyone. He’s super humble, even though he’s

a big action star in movies like The Matrix and John Wick. No drama,

no scandals – just a kind soul who happens to be famous. We love a

good guy like that!

THE FUNNY & COOL KAKAK

Sandra Bullock is the cool kakak who makes you laugh, cry, and feel

better after a bad day. From funny rom-coms to serious dramas, she

can do it all. She’s like rojak – got everything inside, and all very nice!

Plus, she doesn’t take herself too seriously – which makes us love her

even more.

THE SERIOUS & COOL ABANG

Denzel Washington always plays serious, powerful roles – like a

teacher, boss, or someone you don’t want to mess with. He’s got

style, confidence, and a deep voice that makes anything sound

important. Even after all these years, Denzel’s acting is still top

level. Respect, bro!

THE GLAMOUROUS GRANDMA

Helen Mirren is the type of grandma who wears heels, rocks red

carpet fashion, and still acts in action films! She may be in her 70s,

but she’s full of energy, style, and sass. She doesn’t care what people

say – and we love that attitude. So fierce!

These celebs prove that age doesn’t have to slow you down. With

passion, hard work, and a bit of humour, you can still shine – even

after decades in the spotlight. In Malaysia, we say “lama-lama jadi

legend” – and that’s exactly what these stars are.

So next time someone says you’re too old to try something new, just

Crafting

HAPPINESS

Dato’ Sri Meer Habib on Heritage,

Challenges, and Building a

Malaysian Brand for the World

In Malaysia, jewellery is more than just ornamentation—it is history,

memory, and identity woven into gold and gemstones. For Dato’ Sri Meer

Habib, Executive Chairman of HABIB, every piece tells a story, not only of

craftsmanship but also of a family legacy built on values, perseverance, and

an unwavering belief in happiness.

A LEGACY ROOTED IN HERITAGE

The Habib story began with Dato’ Sri Meer’s late father, Dato’ Habib

Mohamed, whose journey into the jewellery trade started in the humblest

of places—a canteen at the post office. There, surrounded by jewellery

stores, he would notice something striking: everyone who stepped out of

those shops carried smiles. “I want to be in the jewellery business,” he once

said, “because it’s always about happiness.” That guiding principle remains

at the heart of Habib today, reflected in its tagline, The Gift of Happiness.

For the Habib family, heritage is not just preserved—it is lived. Meer grew

up in a century-old Jawi Peranakan shophouse above the family’s store.

Today, that very building has been carefully restored, standing as a symbol

of commitment to cultural preservation and the family’s deep Malaysian

roots. The philosophy of Jauhari Peribadi Anda (Your Personal Jeweller)

also echoes this heritage, reminding every customer that jewellery is

personal and should be approached with sincerity and care.

I want to be in

the jewellery

business,” he once

said, “because

it’s always about

happiness

are on display in the Museum

located in Habib, Jalan Ampang

CRAFTSMANSHIP WITH CHARACTER

Ask Habib customers why they return, and the answers are consistent—

design, quality, and creativity. These qualities are not incidental; they

are nurtured through a company culture that questions the status

quo, values common sense, and emphasises authenticity.

As a trained gemologist—among the first in Malaysia—Dato’ Sri Meer

remains deeply involved in the creative process. Rings, in particular,

hold a special place for him, as they are universally admired and worn.

“When I see a beautiful stone, I want to accentuate it,” he says, revealing

the gemologist’s eye that has shaped the company’s collections.

Habib’s designs often marry heritage with modernity—whether

through motifs inspired by traditional songket and wau, or through

timeless collections like Cavo and Sicillia from the Oro Italia 916 line.

Beyond adornment, Habib has also revolutionised the gold business

with collectible wafers and bars, bringing younger buyers back into

the fold of gold ownership.

EXPANDING BEYOND JEWELLERY

While jewellery remains its beating heart, Habib has grown into a

diverse group of businesses. The company is the local partner for

Pandora, an international brand beloved for its personalisation

and accessible luxury, and Ice-Watch, a playful lifestyle label that

resonates with younger, energetic audiences.

Closer to home, Habib has redefined traditional businesses through

innovation. Ar Rahnu Express, the Group’s Islamic pawnshop arm, is

one such example. By transforming the pawnshop experience into

one of dignity—complete with privacy, refreshments, and respect for

every customer—Ar Rahnu Express has grown into one of the Group’s

fastest-expanding businesses. Meanwhile, Chantique caters to

sustainability-conscious buyers by refurbishing pre-loved jewellery,

proving that mindful consumerism can co-exist with timeless beauty.

Through HARTA (Habib’s Action for the Revival of our Traditions

and Art), the Group has gone even further, creating a space where

heritage, art, and culture converge. With wau- and tanjak-making

workshops, Nusantara food demonstrations, and an in-house café,

HARTA is a celebration of Malaysian identity and artistry—open to all,

free of charge.

CHALLENGES AND LESSONS

The path has not always been smooth. Early in his career in the

United States, Meer faced setbacks—once selling a synthetic sapphire

by mistake, an embarrassment that drove him to study gemology and

sharpen his expertise. On returning to Malaysia in 1986, he joined his

father immediately and helped steer the business towards retail.

Always for

questioning the

status quo and using

common sense, Dato

Sri Meer Habib runs

a tight ship as he

chases the goal of

placing Malaysia on

the global map

But even retail brought challenges. In one instance,

HABIB suffered heavy losses after being duped by

a customer with fake stones. Instead of retreating,

Meer adjusted the business model, keeping stores

open during Friday prayers while the admin staff

volunteered and stepped in to assist customers.

What could have been a crippling loss became a

turning point, setting the foundation for HABIB’s

resilience and growth.

GIVING BACK TO MALAYSIA

With success has come responsibility. The

Yayasan HABIB, founded in 2008, focuses on Arts,

Education, and Community Service. From providing

SPM tuition classes for underprivileged youths

at rehabilitation institutions to sponsoring transit

homes for outpatients at Hospital Kuala Lumpur,

the foundation’s work underscores the Group’s

belief in second chances and social responsibility.

Stories of transformation, such as delinquent

youths passing their SPM and entering higher

education, or students turning haircutting skills

into livelihoods, reflect the tangible impact

of these initiatives. Beyond that, Habib’s CSR

extends to building a mosque in Penang,

honouring both heritage and community.

original facade; The beautiful history and antique jewellery pieces of Jawi Peranakan origin that can be found within the Museum in

HARTA, Jalan Ampang

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Looking ahead, Dato’ Sri Meer wants more Malaysians to value

and take pride in homegrown brands. “Malaysians still haggle

over our prices, yet they accept international retail prices

without question. We must recognise that our brands can

equal, if not surpass, global luxury standards,” he stresses.

Already present regionally with nine Pandora stores in

Indonesia, Habib is poised for further expansion. The goal is

ambitious: to make Habib synonymous with Malaysia, just as

Samsung is with Korea. Meer hopes that one day, owning a

Habib piece will become a must-do for visitors to Malaysia,

representing the nation’s artistry on a global stage.

A LASTING LEGACY

For Dato’ Sri Meer Habib, the ultimate vision is not only a

successful business empire but also a cultural legacy—one

that reflects the creativity, resilience, and pride of Malaysia

itself. “My hope,” he shares, “is that Malaysians feel proud

of our brands, that we see the quality in what we create,

and that HABIB stands as proof of Malaysia’s place on the

global map.”

In the end, every piece of HABIB jewellery carries more than

gold or gemstones. It carries a legacy of heritage, happiness,

and a nation’s story waiting to shine.

On the sun-kissed shores of Langkawi, where turquoise waves gently lap the coast and golden sunsets

colour the sky, a new icon is quietly rising — Tropicana Cenang. More than just a development, it is a

reimagination of island living, designed for those who crave the tranquillity of the tropics blended with

modern-day comforts. A 10-year vision by Tropicana, this premium seaside destination is a stunning

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 TREASURE

It’s not hard to see why Langkawi has captured the hearts of travellers from around

the world. Recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, this jewel of an island is a

sanctuary of ancient rainforests, fascinating rock formations, and postcard-perfect

beaches. Yet, it also boasts duty-free shopping, world-class infrastructure, and an

international airport that is just a short flight away from major Southeast Asian

cities. Despite its many strengths, Langkawi has remained refreshingly untouched by

overdevelopment — making it the perfect place for Tropicana to bring its signature

vision of integrated, sustainable living.

Tropicana saw this potential early on and moved swiftly. In 2020, the Group

launched Tropicana Cenang, Langkawi’s first-ever fully integrated, green-certified

development. Situated on 5.28 acres of freehold land in the heart of the island’s

most bustling beach town, Pantai Cenang, the project blends modern residences

with lifestyle retail and resort-inspired amenities, all within one compelling address.

Tropicana Cenang isn’t just another beachfront property — it is a soaring 40-storey

high building offering sweeping views of the Andaman Sea. The first two residential

phases, Assana and Merissa Serviced Suites, have already enjoyed overwhelming

success, recording a 100% take-up rate. Assana offers 831 fully furnished units

ranging from 380 to 1,310 sq ft, ideal for everyone from solo travellers to families.

Merissa, on the other hand, is a boutique collection of just 60 serviced suites sized

between 1,066 and 1,303 sq ft — each thoughtfully designed to feel like a home

away from home.

These residences come move-in ready, with tastefully curated interiors that reflect

the tropical elegance of their surroundings. Residents can enjoy a host of amenities

such as concierge services, swimming pools, fitness facilities and lifestyle retail –

making every day feel like a vacation. Construction is moving steadily forward, with

a recent Topping Off ceremony marking a major milestone for both towers, which

are on track for completion in 2026.

TIMELESS

TRADITIONS

Discover the fascinating food

preservation methods behind

your favourite Asian dishes!

Long before fridges and freezers were invented, people across

Asia already knew how to keep food fresh using smart and natural

methods. These techniques not only helped prevent food from going

bad, but also gave it new flavours and textures that we still love today.

Let’s take a fun look at how people in Asia have been preserving food

for centuries — and why these methods are still popular now.

DRYING: USING THE POWER OF THE SUN

Drying food is one of the oldest ways to make it last longer. In

many Asian countries, people still dry fruits, vegetables, and

fish under the hot sun. Removing moisture this way helps stop

bacteria from growing and spoiling the food.

In modern kitchens, we now have dehydrators and ovens that

do the same job using heat. Whether it’s sun-dried chillies, dried

anchovies, or dehydrated mushrooms, drying makes food last

longer and taste stronger.

80

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 TIPS

SALTING: SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE

Salt is more than just seasoning — it’s a natural preservative. There

are two main ways to use salt to preserve food:

Dry salting: Rubbing salt directly onto food, like fish or vegetables.

This draws out the moisture and keeps bacteria away.

Brine salting: Soaking the food in salty water. This method is great

for things like salted eggs or preserved mangoes.

These salted foods don’t just keep longer — they also have rich,

savoury flavours that people really enjoy.

Clockwise from left: tangy, spicy

and sweet, pickling is a popular

choice for vegetables; drying

in the sun is a great way to

dehydrate a meat or vegetable

allowing it to last long and

fermentation, most popularly

known with kimchi is a method

of allowing good bacteria to

keep the food good

PICKLING: TANGY, CRUNCHY GOODNESS

Pickling is another tasty way to make food last. There are two

common styles:

Vinegar pickling: Food is soaked in vinegar, which is sour and stops

bacteria from growing. Examples include Japanese pickled radish

(takuan) and Filipino atchara (pickled papaya).

Brine pickling: Food is soaked in salty water, and left to naturally

ferment. This method is used for Chinese pickled vegetables and

some types of kimchi.

Pickled food is often crunchy, tangy, and a perfect match for rice or noodles.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

81

FERMENTATION: WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

Fermentation is like a food science experiment — good bacteria change

the food’s flavour, texture, and even make it healthier! Some famous

fermented Asian foods include:

Soy sauce – Made from fermented soybeans, and used in many dishes.

Miso – A savoury paste from Japan used in soups and sauces.

Natto – Sticky, strong-smelling soybeans that are packed with nutrients.

Kimchi – Spicy fermented cabbage from Korea.

Kombucha – A fizzy, fermented tea that’s refreshing and good for digestion.

These foods often have bold, deep flavours — and they’re also good

for your gut!

82

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 TIPS

SMOKING: FLAVOUR AND FRESHNESS COMBINED

Smoking isn’t just for barbecue lovers. In Asia, smoking meat and fish

has long been a way to dry and preserve food. The smoke not only

keeps the food from going bad, but also gives it a delicious, smoky

flavour.

From smoked duck in Chinese dishes to smoked squid snacks in

Southeast Asia, this method adds something special to everyday food.

Smoking meat and fish

not only keeps food from

going bad, but also gives it

a delicious, smokey flavour

OLD TRADITIONS, TASTY RESULTS

What’s amazing is how these traditional methods are still used and

loved today. They’re not just about saving food — they’ve become a

big part of Asian cooking and culture.

So, the next time you enjoy a spoonful of miso soup, a bite of kimchi,

or a handful of dried fruit, remember — you’re tasting a bit of history,

kept alive by simple, clever methods that work just as well now as

they did hundreds of years ago.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

In a world that’s going back to natural, sustainable ways of living,

these age-old techniques show us that sometimes, the best ideas are

the ones that have been around all along.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 THRIVE

THE FIRST

GAMES EVER

PLAYED

From sticks and stones to strategy

and sport — uncover the very first

games humans ever played

Across every ancient civilisation, humans have turned movement

into meaning. Whether to train warriors, honour deities, or simply

enjoy play, sport has long shaped our cultures.

Here are eight of the world’s oldest sports, still practiced today, that

connect us to thousands of years of human heritage.

WRESTLING: SPORT IN ITS PUREST FORM

Age: Over 15,000 years

Origins: Prehistoric Europe, Ancient Mesopotamia & Egypt

Wrestling is the oldest recorded competitive sport in the world. In

Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, detailed carvings depict matches

that followed rules and techniques recognisable even today.

Wrestling was a staple in both Greek and Indian epics, featured

in The Iliad and the Mahabharata, making it a global phenomenon

before the term existed.

Still featured in the Olympics, it’s a testament to our primal

connection to physical mastery. Its legacy continues in various

forms such as Turkish oil wrestling and Central Asian belt wrestling,

as well as globally popular disciplines like Brazilian jiu-jitsu and

mixed martial arts (MMA).

RUNNING: HUMANITY’S FIRST RACE

Age: Prehistoric

Origins: Global

Long before medals or marathons, running was a matter of survival.

Early humans ran to hunt, escape danger, and communicate across

distances. In 776 BC, the Greeks formalised it in their first Olympic

Games with the stadion, a 200-metre sprint, that remains symbolic

of athletic excellence.

Today, running connects city streets and mountain trails across

cultures; it’s become everything from morning therapy to majorcity

spectacle. Whether it’s Kipchoge breaking time barriers or

thousands pounding pavement at the Tokyo Marathon, it’s the one

sport that universally needs no equipment. Just lungs, legs, and a

little motivation.

JAVELIN: FROM HUNTING SPEAR TO SPORTING ART

Age: At least 3,000 years

Origins: Ancient Greece & beyond

What began as a survival tool, used for hunting and war, the javelin

was reimagined into one of the most elegant and technical Olympic

events. Introduced in the 708 BC pentathlon in Greece, Greek

athletes trained to increase their spin and throw the javelin with

terrifying accuracy.

Today’s javelin throw remains a signature Olympic event. Its form

may have changed, but the essence and thrill remains: mastering

power, precision and control with a single, soaring throw.

CHARIOT RACING: THE ANCIENT WORLD’S F1

Age: Over 3,500 years

Origins: Mycenaean Greece, Egypt, Rome

If you think motorsport fans are passionate today, imagine the roars

at a Roman circus. Chariot racing was one of the most dangerous

and popular spectacles of the ancient world. Originating in Bronze

Age Greece and depicted in Homer’s Iliad, it became the heartbeat

of the Olympic Games by 680 BC and a key event across Egyptian

and Roman cultures. These races weren’t just entertainment, they

were political tools and public theatre.

These days, while the chariots have gone, the spirit of speed survives

in our love for modern motor racing. From Monaco to Sepang, they

remain political, perilous and hugely profitable.

POLO: THE SPORT OF KINGS

Age: Over 2,500 years

Origins: Ancient Persia (modern-day Iran)

What began as a military training exercise for Persian cavalry

evolved into an elite pastime. Known as chovgan in its earliest form,

polo was played by emperors and noble warriors across Central

Asia. As it spread, through Silk Road trade and imperial expansion,

it became beloved by royalty from India to Britain.

Clockwise from top right: a Persian

horseback game of strategy and

speed believed to be the origin of

modern polo; this Chinese ball-kicking

game is often considered the earliest

known form of football; archery was

a vital martial skill and ceremonial

practice across ancient civilizations;

originating in Japan, sumo began as a

sacred ritual to entertain Shinto deities

through wrestling

Modern polo retains its aristocratic charm, with modern clubs still

echoing the legacy of horseback elegance and strategic play. The

use of horses, combined with tactical coordination and precise ball

control, reflects its dual identity as both martial art and elite pastime.

CUJU: THE WORLD’S FIRST FOOTBALL

Age: Over 2,000 years

Origins: Ancient China

Well before modern football gripped the world, the Chinese were

playing cuju—a ball game involving kicking a leather ball through a

net without using hands. During the Han dynasty, cuju was both sport

and spectacle, played in royal courts and military training grounds.

The name literally means “kick ball”, and while it disappeared for

centuries, historians now recognise it as the oldest known form of

football. So next time you’re watching the World Cup, raise a toast

to the ball-kickers of Chang’an who started it all, two millennia ago.

BELT WRESTLING: THE ART OF THE HOLD

Age: Over 4,000 years

Origins: Mesopotamia, Central Asia

Belt wrestling is a pure contest of strength, opponents grip each

other’s belts and aim to throw, clean and fair. It was recorded in

ancient Sumerian carvings and even referenced in the Epic of

Gilgamesh. It has become culturally significant across Central Asia,

where styles like Kurash in Uzbekistan and Alysh in Kyrgyzstan are

still practiced today.

The tradition continues through farther recognised sports such

as Ssireum (Korea) and Sumo (Japan). These forms have been

institutionalised with rules and competitions, yet they preserve the

original spirit of respect, balance, and control.

ARCHERY: FROM SURVIVAL SKILL TO OLYMPIC DISCIPLINE

Age: Over 10,000 years

Origins: Prehistoric Africa, Asia, and Europe

Archery originated as a means of survival, used for hunting and

protection. Archaeological evidence suggests the use of bows and

arrows as early as 8000 BC. Over time, archery gained ritual and

military importance across Egypt, China, India, and the Mongol

Empire. Entire epics were written about legendary archers.

As a modern sport, archery is now more Zen, with both Olympic

and traditional variations. Countries such as South Korea lead in

contemporary archery, while Japan’s kyudo and Central Asia’s

horseback archery preserve ceremonial forms.

LONGEVITY

HACKS

Discover the surprisingly

simple habits that could help

you live to 100 — no kale

obsession required!

Reaching 100 years old might sound like something reserved for

old tortoises and lucky grandmas on greeting cards, but believe it

or not, you’ve got a fighting chance. While you can’t change your

genes, you can live in a way that gives you a better shot at blowing

out those triple-digit birthday candles. Let’s break it down — simply,

sensibly, and with a little cheeky humour.

MOVE THAT BOOTY

No, you don’t need to run a marathon or become a yoga pretzel. But

moving your body regularly is key.

Go for a long walk, shake your hips in a dance class, lift a bag of

rice a few times — it all counts! Mix in some aerobic stuff, strength

training, and flexibility exercises. The secret? Do something you

enjoy. If you hate jogging, don’t jog. Love gardening? Great! That

counts too.

EAT LIKE YOU LOVE YOURSELF

We’re not saying never touch a chip again, but your diet should

mostly be made up of whole foods — think fruits, veg, beans, nuts

and whole grains. Basically, if it grew from the ground and hasn’t

been deep-fried three times, it’s a win.

Try to cut down on red meat, and limit processed foods and fizzy

drinks. The more colourful your plate, the better — and no, we don’t

mean rainbow sprinkles.

92

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 THRIVE

STRESS LESS, LAUGH MORE

Stress is like glitter — it gets everywhere and is hard to get rid of.

But learning how to manage it can add years to your life.

Try yoga, deep breathing, listening to whale noises, or even just doing

absolutely nothing for five minutes. Hobbies help too — knitting,

gardening, baking, even competitive birdwatching if that’s your thing.

Avoid doomscrolling and keep your headspace as tidy as your sock

drawer — or at least try.

SNOOZE LIKE A PRO

Sleep isn’t just for beauty — it’s for your brain, body, and mood. Aim

for 7–9 hours every night. Set a regular sleep schedule and turn your

bedroom into a peaceful cave: cool, dark, quiet, and free of blinking

devices that beep at 2 a.m.

While you can’t

change your genes,

you can live in a

way that gives you a

better shot at blowing

out those triple-digit

birthday candles

No more falling asleep with the TV on mid-soap opera — your future

centenarian self will thank you.

KEEP YOUR PEOPLE CLOSE

Loneliness is rubbish for your health. Maintaining strong social

connections — whether with friends, family, neighbours, or your cat

— can boost your well-being.

Even if you're not a social butterfly, having just a few people you

care about can do wonders. So go ahead — call your mum, join that

local book club, or start a WhatsApp group for cat memes.

LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER

No smoking. Obvious, but worth repeating. Go easy on the booze. A

glass of wine now and then? Fine. Swimming in it nightly? Maybe not.

See your doctor regularly. Don’t wait until things fall off. Challenge

your brain. Puzzles, reading, learning new things — it all helps keep

your mind sharp enough to still beat the grandkids at Scrabble. Get

a pet. A dog, a cat, a goldfish — companionship is good for the soul.

And they never complain about your cooking.

Left to right: Laughter is the

best medicine and this is proven

to be true for a longer life;

Spending time with loved ones

creates unbreakable bonds

and connections boosting ones

well-being

THE BOTTOM LINE?

Living to 100 isn’t about becoming a saint or eating raw broccoli

for every meal. It’s about small, consistent choices — moving more,

eating better, laughing louder, and surrounding yourself with joy.

And if you slip up occasionally and eat half a cheesecake on a bad

day? That’s alright too. Just don’t make it every day.

So go on, give it a go. Here’s to turning 100 — and enjoying every

cheeky, leafy, joy-filled step along the way.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 ADVERTORIAL

OSTEOPOROSIS:

THE SILENT BONE THIEF

By Dr Juzaily Fekry Leong, Consultant Orthopaedic Trauma, Arthroplasty & Robotic

Surgeon and Dr Tan Jin Aun, Consultant Orthopaedic & Spine Surgeon

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test, is a test commonly done using DEXA scan to investigate the bone health of the individual

Osteoporosis, often known as the “silent disease,” quietly

weakens our bones over the years, often without symptoms—

until it’s too late. The first sign might be a broken bone after a

minor fall or bump. “As an orthopaedic surgeon, I’ve seen the

profound impact of osteoporosis on patients’ lives, especially

when it leads to "fragility fractures"—breaks that occur from

minimal trauma,” says Dr Juzaily Fekry Leong, Consultant

Orthopaedic Trauma, Arthroplasty & Robotic Surgeon. “These

fractures, particularly of the hip, spine, and wrist, are not

just painful; they can lead to long-term disability, loss of

independence, and even premature death.”

With "World Osteoporosis Day" coming up in October, it’s

the perfect time to raise awareness about this major yet

preventable cause of fractures, especially among older adults.

“As orthopaedic surgeons, we frequently see the consequences

of untreated osteoporosis. While spine (vertebral) fractures

are the most common osteoporotic fractures, they are also

the most underdiagnosed—many patients do not present to

the hospital, attributing symptoms to general back pain or

aging,” says Dr Tan Jin Aun, Consultant Orthopaedic & Spine

Surgeon. A reduction in height or a stooped posture (kyphosis),

should prompt evaluation for spinal compression fractures and

underlying osteoporosis. In contrast, hip fractures typically

present with more severe symptoms and often result in hospital

admission. Early surgical fixation is often required to enable

early mobilisation, reduce complications, and restore function.

However, fixing the fracture is only half the battle. After any

fragility fracture, it is critical to initiate osteoporosis treatment

to prevent a second, potentially more serious fracture.

WHY OSTEOPOROSIS SHOULDN’T BE IGNORED

From an Orthopaedic standpoint, osteoporosis is one of the

leading contributors to "fragility fractures" — fractures that

occur from a fall from standing height or less. These fractures,

especially hip fractures, are associated with high mortality

rates. Up to 20–30% of patients die within a year following a

hip fracture. For those who survive, many never regain their

previous level of mobility or independence.

WHO IS AT RISK?

Osteoporosis doesn’t happen overnight. It develops slowly

over time, and certain factors increase the risk.

Non-Modifiable Risk Factors:

Age – Bone density naturally declines with age, especially

after 50.

Sex – Women, especially postmenopausal, are at higher risk

due to the drop in oestrogen levels.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

97

Family history – Having a parent or sibling with osteoporosis

increases your risk.

Ethnicity – People of Asian or Caucasian descent tend to have

a higher risk.

Modifiable Risk Factors:

Lack of physical activity – Especially weight-bearing and

muscle-strengthening exercises.

Poor nutrition – Low calcium and vitamin D intake.

Smoking – Weakens bone structure and reduces calcium

absorption.

Excessive alcohol – Interferes with bone formation.

Certain medications – Long-term use of steroids, some cancer

treatments, and anti-epileptics.

future fractures. Treatment plans are tailored based on

fracture risk, age, and bone density results.

1. Lifestyle Modification

Even with medication, lifestyle changes remain essential.

2. Supplementation

Calcium (1000–1200 mg/day) and vitamin D (800–1000

IU/day) are the cornerstones. Supplement if dietary intake

is insufficient.

3. Pharmacological Treatment

Several medications are available to reduce bone loss

or increase bone formation. Treatment typically lasts

several years, and your doctor will monitor bone density

periodically to assess response.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT?

The foundation of osteoporosis prevention lies in building and

maintaining strong bones throughout life. Prevention should ideally

begin in childhood and continue into adulthood and old age.

1. STAY ACTIVE

Engage in weight-bearing exercise* (walking, jogging,

stair climbing) and resistance training at least 2–3 times a

week. Balance and flexibility exercises like Tai Chi or yoga

can help prevent falls in older adults.

A FINAL WORD: DON’T WAIT FOR A FRACTURE

In orthopaedic clinics, we often meet osteoporosis patients

after they’ve suffered a fracture. At that point, prevention is

no longer possible—we are managing the consequences. But

it doesn’t have to be that way.

We must shift the focus to early detection and proactive

prevention. Public awareness, especially during events like

World Osteoporosis Day, plays a key role in encouraging

people to get tested, get informed, and take action.

2. EAT FOR YOUR BONES

Ensure adequate calcium intake: Adults need around

1000–1200 mg/day. Good sources include dairy products,

leafy greens, almonds, and fortified foods. Get enough

vitamin D: Around 800–1000 IU/day is generally

recommended for older adults. Sunlight exposure helps

the body produce vitamin D naturally.

3. LIFESTYLE CHOICES

Quit smoking and limit alcohol intake. Maintain a healthy

weight – being underweight increases fracture risk.

Bone health is a lifetime investment— start now, stay strong,

and don’t let osteoporosis steal your independence.

Sunway Medical Centre Damansara, located at Kota

Damansara, is the fourth tertiary hospital in the Sunway

Healthcare Group. Established in 2024, it offers a wide range

of specialties, including Accident & Emergency, Cardiology,

Neuroscience, Gastroenterology, Orthopedics, Oncology,

ENT, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Plastic and

Reconstructive Surgery, and more.

WHEN AND HOW TO INVESTIGATE?

If you are over 50 and have suffered a fragility fracture, or

if you have multiple risk factors, it’s time to investigate your

bone health. The key investigation is the Bone Mineral Density

(BMD) Test, commonly done via DEXA scan which is a noninvasive

test.

Other assessments include:

Blood tests for calcium, phosphate, vitamin D levels, Kidney

function and thyroid screening. Also fall risk assessments in

elderly individuals

DIAGNOSED WITH OSTEOPOROSIS? WHAT NEXT?

The goal of treatment is to strengthen bones and prevent

Meet the 3 Oldest National Parks That

Have Aged Better Than Most of Us

When you think of old things, you might picture dusty museums, antique clocks, or your granddad’s

favourite armchair. But did you know there are national parks that have been around since before

your great-grandparents were even born? These wild wonders have stood the test of time — and

thankfully, without needing anti-ageing creams.

Let’s take a fun little stroll through the world’s top three oldest national parks that are not just

old but completely remarkable.

ROYAL NATIONAL PARK – AUSTRALIA (1879)

Just a hop, skip and a kangaroo jump from Sydney is the world’s second-oldest national park:

the Royal National Park. Opened in 1879, it was originally called “The National Park” — creative,

right? It later got the royal upgrade in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandma, Queen

Victoria.

This stunning slice of Australia is packed with eucalyptus forests, scenic cliffs, hidden waterfalls,

and beaches that look like postcards. Locals love it for hiking, swimming, birdwatching, and

pretending they’re in a nature documentary.

Oh, and keep your eyes peeled — you might spot a lyrebird, which can mimic chainsaws, camera

shutters, and car alarms. It’s basically the bird version of your nosy neighbour.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK – USA (1872)

Yellowstone, located mostly in the state of Wyoming within the

USA, became the world’s very first national park in 1872. That’s so

old, Queen Victoria was still ruling when it opened.

Yellowstone is famous for its wild landscapes and even wilder

geysers — especially Old Faithful, which shoots boiling water into

the air like it’s showing off. You’ll also find grizzly bears, wolves,

bison, elk, and more hot springs than your local spa. It’s basically

Mother Nature’s original theme park, minus the roller coasters and

overpriced snacks.

Fun fact: Yellowstone sits on a supervolcano. Yes, a supervolcano.

But don’t worry — it hasn’t exploded in over 600,000 years, so

you’ve probably got time to visit.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK – CANADA (1885)

Up in the chilly wilds of Alberta, Canada, Banff National Park looks

like it fell straight out of a fantasy film. Created in 1885, it’s Canada’s

oldest national park and the third-oldest in the world.

Imagine towering snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes that

don’t even look real (hello, Lake Louise), and wildlife that includes

moose, mountain goats, and the occasional curious bear. Banff is

also a winter sports haven, so if skiing is your thing, this place is a

snow-globe dream come true.

Best of all? You don’t need to be a hardcore hiker or wilderness

wizard to enjoy it — there are plenty of scenic drives and comfy

lodges with fireplaces and hot chocolate.

daydream from your sofa, these national treasures remind us that

nature is timeless — and a bit of fresh air never goes out of style.

What are you waiting for? Pack your boots, charge your camera,

The OFFLINE 16 ESG event by VitaHealth and Tropicana has been gaining

popularity and traction since it kicked off in 2024. This first-of-its-kind

In Asia, every 6 in 10 individuals are at high risk for mental health challenges, while 1 in 6

children face mental health issues (NHMS, 2023). Digital dependency adds fuel to the fire,

with heavy screen use linked to anxiety, depression, and social isolation. According to the

WHO World Mental Health Surveys, over 75% of people in low to middle-income countries

don’t receive the mental health care they need. OFFLINE 16 aims to raise awareness by

making preventive mental wellness simple, practical, and accessible through real-world

experiences that encourage people to unplug, reconnect, and build healthy habits.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES IN JOHOR

The Johor property market is experiencing a phase of

accelerated growth boosted by its game-changing JS-SEZ

economic collaboration initiative between Malaysia and

Singapore, the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid

Transit System (“RTS”) link and MM2H opportunities. The

highly anticipated RTS Link, which will be ready by 2026, is

an international cross-border rapid transit system that will

connect Malaysia's second largest city, Johor Bahru and

Woodlands, Singapore, crossing the Straits of Johor. The RTS

Link has two stations, one located at Bukit Chagar in Johor

Bahru and another one at Woodlands North in Singapore. Lido

Waterfront Boulevard (“LIDO”) is strategically located near

the Bukit Chagar station, a mere 7-10-minute drive, making

Skypark Kepler at LIDO the ideal investment choice.

The official signing of the JS-SEZ government initiative will

serve as a catalyst to boost bilateral economic cooperation,

encourage more investment opportunities, create higher

job opportunities and unlock many other growth potentials,

leveraging on the strengths and synergies between Malaysia

and Singapore. The JS-SEZ also provides investors with a

host of incentives, including a special corporate tax rate of

5% for up to 15 years as well as lower entertainment duties.

This will enhance trade and connectivity across Asia Pacific,

encouraging technology transfer and stimulating growth

across various industries, making it a highly opportune time to

invest in Malaysia.

The MM2H programme has recently experienced an upsurge

in interest due to an update to its criteria, with a majority of

those who are interested coming from China, as well as an

increasing interest from Taiwan. MM2H is a highly beneficial

venture as it is a long-term visa initiative that allows foreigners

to stay in Malaysia for up to 20 years, depending on the chosen

tier. This provides a great opportunity for savvy foreigners to

pursue living or plan their retirement in Malaysia. For MM2H

applicants who wish to settle down in Johor, they will be

rewarded with special incentives and benefits in the Special

Economic Zones (“SEZ”) and Special Financial Zones (“SFZ”).

Current hotspots for MM2H applicants are Kuala Lumpur,

Penang and now Johor due to its rapid growth and increasing

opportunities. For more info, please log on to https://www.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 THRILL

TRUE

TERRORS

Horror Films Rooted

in Real Legends

When cinema mirrors collective memory, fear becomes

heritage. These homegrown horrors prove that the most

enduring scares don’t emerge from fiction, they’re drawn

straight from real life.

HOLLYWOOD – THE CONJURING (2013)

Based on the real-life investigations of paranormal experts

Ed and Lorraine Warren, this haunted-house saga follows

the Perron family’s harrowing experiences in Rhode Island

during the 1970s. It transformed obscure case files into

a pop culture phenomenon and spawned a successful

cinematic universe.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

141

MALAYSIA – DUKUN (2018)

This gripping horror-thriller is inspired—

albeit loosely—by the true and

sensational Murder–witch doctor case

of Mona Fandey in the 1990s. Dukun

(“Shaman”) dramatizes the fear and

fascination behind real crimes, and

became a cultural flashpoint in Malaysia.

INDONESIA – KAKAK (2015)

Kakak (“Sister”) is based on a

harrowing true story from the director’s

life. When a newlywed couple moves

into a new home, they encounter

inexplicable supernatural visitors,

drawing from first-hand accounts of

unsettling occurrences.

JAPAN – SCARY TRUE STORIES: TEN

HAUNTING TALES (2000S)

Rather than a single case, this anthology

draws from real urban legends across

Japanese culture. Everything from

stalking spirits to live ghosts. It’s how

folklore migrates from whispered

campfires to cinematic nightmares.

THAILAND – THEE YOD

(DEATH WHISPERER) (2023)

Inspired by a viral urban legend of reallife

supernatural horror, Thee Yod puts

you in the shoes of the witnesses. The

film recreates the eerie events of 1970, in

which the haunting of a girl by a woman

in black remains legendary in Thai

folklore, and Thee Yod offers a cinematic

version of this chilling oral history.

SOUTH KOREA – GONJIAM:

HAUNTED ASYLUM (2018)

Framed as a live-streamed ghost hunt

in an infamous abandoned psychiatric

hospital, Gonjiam is chilling not just for its

staged horrors, but for the fact that the

location is on a real site once considered

one of Korea’s most haunted locations. It

tapped into true accounts of torment and

transformed them into box office horror.

CHINA – THE HOUSE THAT

NEVER DIES (2014)

Based on the legend of Chaonei No.

81, a supposedly haunted mansion in

Beijing, this film turns Beijing’s ghost

tale into a 3D thriller that draws on

national lore. It’s become a cultural

phenomenon, not just on screen, but

in tourism to the real-life haunted

address.

GAMES

10 Video Games That

Defined Generations

Some games are fleeting fun. Others become legacy.

These ten legendary titles didn’t just break records.

They built the foundation of modern gaming, and

decades later, they’re still being played, adapted, or

remembered as icons.

PONG (1972)

The paddle that launched an empire. Pong was the

beginning of it all, turning simple black-and-white

blips into adrenaline. Today, its minimalist style lives

on in mobile games and nostalgic throwbacks like

Pong Quest (2020), which reimagines the classic as a

quirky RPG for modern audiences.

SPACE INVADERS (1978)

Earth’s first digital defense. Space Invaders introduced

tension and rhythm to arcade shooters. Its legacy

echoes in every alien-blasting game that followed, and

the original has been reissued in modern formats, most

recently in Space Invaders Forever (2020), a polished

multi-title pack for the PlayStation and Switch.

144

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 TECH

TETRIS (1984)

Falling blocks, rising obsession. Still a masterclass in

addictive gameplay, Tetris has seen countless iterations:

from Tetris Effect, a surreal, meditative twist for VR and

modern consoles, to competitive mobile and esports

formats. It’s as playable now as ever.

SUPER MARIO BROS. (1985)

The jump heard ’round the world. Mario’s rescue mission

redefined home gaming and still drives Nintendo’s

success. Today’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)

reinvents the classic side-scrolling charm for a new

generation, while Mario Maker lets players build their

own pixelated adventures.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA (1986)

A sword, a map, and a kingdom to explore. The openworld

spirit that began here lives on in Breath of the

Wild (2017) and its sequel Tears of the Kingdom (2023),

where discovery and design honour the original’s sense

of wonder while expanding its possibilities.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 TECH

STREET FIGHTER II (1991)

Arcade battles became global duels. Its legacy lives

through Street Fighter 6 (2023), with updated graphics,

fresh characters, and a thriving competitive scene. The

game’s core mechanics: timing, precision, and flair,

remain remarkably faithful to the original.

DOOM (1993)

Fast, loud, and blood-pumping. Doom introduced firstperson

shooter intensity and is still thriving through

modern releases like Doom Eternal (2020). Its legacy

also shaped countless shooters, from Call of Duty to

Halo, and its original engine remains a playground for

fan mods even today

POKÉMON RED & BLUE (1996)

The game that taught us all to catch ’em all. Pokémon’s

formula remains largely unchanged for a reason—it

works. The newest entries, Scarlet & Violet (2022), build

on the original RPG mechanics while expanding the

Pokédex and offering open-world exploration. Nostalgia

thrives alongside innovation.

FINAL FANTASY VII (1997)

A sweeping RPG that proved video games could be

cinematic and emotionally profound. Final Fantasy VII

brought 3D graphics and epic storytelling to consoles,

making JRPGs globally popular. Its 2020 remake,

Final Fantasy VII Remake, reimagines the Midgar saga

with real-time combat and lush visuals, with sequels

continuing through 2024 and beyond.

THE SIMS (2000)

Life in pixels, one chaotic house at a time. The Sims

introduced open-ended, people-focused gameplay

where players could build homes, control daily lives,

and spark simulated drama. It has since evolved through

The Sims 2, 3, and 4, with The Sims 5 in development. It

remains one of the bestselling, genre-defining PC game

series ever.
