IMPORTANT FACTS FOR BIKTARVY®

This is only a brief summary of important information about BIKTARVY® and does not

replace talking to your healthcare provider about your condition and your treatment.

(bik-TAR-vee)

MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT BIKTARVY

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:

• Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. Your

healthcare provider will test you for HBV. If you have

both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse

if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking

BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare

provider, as they will need to check your health regularly

for several months, and may give you HBV medicine.

ABOUT BIKTARVY

BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription

medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who

weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people

who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people

who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and

whose healthcare provider determines they meet

certain requirements.

BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the

virus that causes AIDS.

Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine

that contains:

• dofetilide

• rifampin

• any other medicines to treat HIV-1

BEFORE TAKING BIKTARVY

Tell your healthcare provider if you:

• Have or have had any kidney or liver problems,

including hepatitis infection.

• Have any other health problems.

• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Tell your

healthcare provider if you become pregnant while

taking BIKTARVY.

• Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed.

Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks of

breastfeeding during treatment with BIKTARVY.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines

you take:

• Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-thecounter

medicines, antacids, laxatives, vitamins, and

herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare

provider and pharmacist.

• BIKTARVY and other medicines may affect each other.

Ask your healthcare provider and pharmacist about

medicines that interact with BIKTARVY, and ask if it is

safe to take BIKTARVY with all your other medicines.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF BIKTARVY

BIKTARVY may cause serious side effects, including:

• Those in the “Most Important Information About

BIKTARVY” section.

• Changes in your immune system. Your immune

system may get stronger and begin to fight infections

that may have been hidden in your body. Tell your

healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms

after you start taking BIKTARVY.

• Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your

healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to

check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney

problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY.

• Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis),

which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can

lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away

if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more

tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of

breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea

and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy

or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat.

• Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead

to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away

if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part

of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine,

light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several

days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain.

• The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in

clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%),

and headache (5%).

These are not all the possible side effects of BIKTARVY.

Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have

any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY.

You are encouraged to report negative side

effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit

www.FDA.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Your healthcare provider will need to do tests to monitor

your health before and during treatment with BIKTARVY.

HOW TO TAKE BIKTARVY

Take BIKTARVY 1 time each day with or without food.

Stanford Altamirano, 1974-2025. RIP

Stanford Altamirano, the visionary founder, publisher, and Editor-in-Chief

of THE FIGHT, passed away last month following a long battle with adenoid

cystic carcinoma, a rare form of head and neck cancer. He was 51 years old.

Stanford launched THE FIGHT in 2011 with a mission to create a more

diverse and inclusive platform for the entire queer community, particularly

for segments that were often underrepresented. A dedicated advocate,

he was also passionate about the recovery community, and he created

the magazine’s “The Share” column to highlight individuals’ stories of

sobriety and hope.

Stanford Altamirano’s memory will be cherished by the many lives he

touched and the love he shared. His legacy calls on us to honor his life by

cherishing our loved ones and living each day with kindness and purpose.

On a more personal note, I was privileged to spend the past 30 years of

my life with Stanford. While his loss hurts more than I can say, I am grateful

that he is no longer in pain.

Thank you Stanford for the love, the laughter, the loyalty, the generosity

and the memories.

We will be together again, sometime down the road. I love you.

Rest In Power.

STAYING

ALIVE

Downtown LA’s Precinct Gay Bar at Risk of Closure

Following Ex-Employee Lawsuit

Precinct DTLA, a decade-old cornerstone

of the Downtown Los Angeles

queer nightlife scene, is facing a

severe financial crisis and possible

closure after being hit with a discrimination

lawsuit by a former employee.

The bar, which has been a haven for the

LGBTQ+ community, is calling on its patrons

for support to help cover mounting legal fees.

The lawsuit, filed in May by former cashier

and coat attendant Jessica Gonzales,

alleges she was discriminated against as a

heterosexual, cisgender white woman.

The complaint lists a series of grievances,

including claims of wrongful termination,

being paid only in tips for coat check, and

a toxic work environment. The bar’s management

has vehemently denied these

claims, labeling them as “completely false.”

In a public statement on Instagram on

August 1st, Precinct announced its financial

distress, stating it was “a couple of slow weekends

away from having to close our doors.”

The bar highlighted that this legal battle is the

BY VICTOR MELAMED

most serious threat it has faced, compounding

previous challenges like pandemic shutdowns,

a decline in nightlife, and nearby ICE activity.

The case has drawn significant attention

not only for the allegations but also for the

plaintiff’s legal representation.

Precinct’s social media post pointed

out that one of Gonzales’ attorneys, John

L. Barber, was previously embroiled in a

2023 scandal where leaked emails from his

former firm showed him and a colleague

using racist and homophobic slurs.

Barber has denied any bias against the

LGBTQ+ community, stating the lawsuit is

about a plaintiff being “mistreated and the

law being violated and nothing more.”

In response to Precinct’s plea, the community

has rallied to support the beloved

establishment. A GoFundMe campaign was

launched, surpassing its initial $70,000 goal

to help with legal fees. The bar has also seen

a surge in patronage, with loyal customers

showing up in force to buy drinks and tip staff.

Precinct is recognized as one of the largest

gay bars in Los Angeles outside of West

Hollywood and is celebrated for its inclusive

and gritty atmosphere, which attracts a

diverse queer crowd.

Regulars and performers, including drag

queen Puddin’, have described the venue

as a “safe space” and a “beacon of the

intersectionality of queerness.”

Precinct’s general manager, Jeremy

Lucido, has stated that while the community’s

support has been overwhelming and

has helped cover initial legal retainers, the

long-term legal battle remains a significant

concern. The civil case is scheduled for a case

management conference on September 17.

EMPOWERED

LIVES

A Sanctuary for the Soul:

How Creative Recovery LA is Reshaping Healing

BY CORY B. SAVAGE, CADC I / CEO / FOUNDER, CREATIVE RECOVERY LA

I’ve lived the story so many in our community know by heart: the

struggle with addiction, the mental health challenges, and the

pain of societal rejection. As an LGBTQ+ individual, my journey

taught me that true healing begins when we see each person’s

unique story, not just their symptoms. At Creative Recovery LA,

we’ve built a sanctuary where that belief is our foundation.

When clients walk through our doors, they’re often carrying

the weight of trauma—anti-LGBTQ+ violence, sexual assault,

religious ostracism—and grappling with a longing for acceptance.

Our trauma-informed approach creates a safe, judgment-free

space where they can finally uncover those suppressed experiences

and discover their authentic selves.

We begin with a simple, radical truth: you have inherent value

from the start. Many arrive believing they must earn their worth, but

we show them it’s already theirs. For our LGBTQ+ clients, this means

tackling internalized stigma and community

biases through personalized therapy.

For others, it’s exploring grief or addiction

through our holistic continuum of care.

And that’s where creativity becomes the

key to unlocking the soul.

In our state-of-the-art music studio,

clients collaborate with music industry

professionals, transforming their pain

into art. We teach photography, empowering

them to capture their journey

through a new lens. Our horticulture program

offers lessons in nurturing through

the care of rare orchids, and our cuttingedge

Atmos surround sound studio uses audible software to

analyze missing frequencies in the voice, providing innovative

emotional relief. By using these creative modalities, we guide

clients toward a vibrant life where their authentic selves shine.

THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR TEAM

The care we provide is only as strong as the people behind it. Our

team is a dynamic blend of LGBTQ+ members and dedicated allies,

all bringing a wealth of professional and personal expertise. Many

hold advanced degrees in clinical psychology, marriage and family

therapy, and social work. Our clinicians are specifically trained in

trauma-informed care, minority stress, and gender-affirming practices,

with certifications from organizations like the Trevor Project.

Our creative arts therapists are credentialed in art, music, and

expressive arts, allowing them to address complex issues with a sensitivity

and skill that’s deeply rooted in understanding. This diversity empowers

us to challenge norms and foster complete healing, helping

our clients confront internal biases and embrace their inherent value.

SPECIALIZED GROUPS FOR AUTHENTIC SELVES

We understand that healing is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why

we offer specialized therapy groups for exploring gender identity

I KNOW FIRSTHAND

THAT HEALING IS

ABOUT MORE THAN

JUST OVERCOMING

PAIN; IT’S ABOUT RE-

DISCOVERING ONE’S

INHERENT VALUE AND

BUILDING A LIFE OF

PURPOSE.

and sexual orientation when our clients need it. These groups are

designed as safe, affirming spaces where individuals can process

suppressed experiences and find the courage to embrace who

they truly are.

Central to our approach is the Conscious Recovery format by TJ

Woodward, a mindfulness-based framework that helps clients address

the root causes of their pain. This approach empowers them to

uncover deeper truths and build resilience, whether they’re navigating

religious ostracism or grappling with mental health struggles.

A HOME OF HEALING AND ACCEPTANCE

Our Transitional Living Home, Hillock House, is more than just

a residence; it’s a sanctuary built on respect. We ensure a safe

and welcoming environment for all gender identities and sexual

orientations with clear anti-discrimination policies, gender-neutral

facilities, and staff trained in inclusive

care. More importantly, Hillock House fosters

a sense of shared humanity. We teach

residents to build community with those

who differ from them, united by a common

thread of healing.

One of my favorite examples of our creative

therapies in action involves a client

who arrived at our program burdened by

past traumas. Through our music studio,

they worked with industry professionals to

create original music. This process gave

them a safe space to express themselves

and, in doing so, they reclaimed their

inherent value. The music didn’t just heal—it gave voice to their

identity and resilience.

A VISION FUELED BY LIVED EXPERIENCE

My lifelong journey—surviving sexual violence, navigating

broken family systems, and seeking spiritual connection after

religious ostracism—has shaped my commitment to Creative

Recovery LA’s mission. I know firsthand that healing is about more

than just overcoming pain; it’s about rediscovering one’s inherent

value and building a life of purpose.

We all deserve happiness and acceptance. We all hold great

value. I want to show our clients that life after recovery is vibrant

LEVEL UP

YOUR HEALTH

(and level up your life)

PrEP & Testing at the CARE Center

You’re a boss. You’re building

your career, your friendships, and your life. But are

you prioritizing your health? HIV and STIs are still

a reality, especially within our community. But you

have the power to protect yourself.

Long-acting PrEP is a game-changer. Forget daily pills

– one injection every two months gives you powerful

protection against HIV. It’s convenient, effective, and

lets you focus on living your life to the fullest.

The CARE Center at Dignity Health - St. Mary

Medical Center in Long Beach is your

partner in health. They are recognized as

an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader

for equitable and inclusive patient care,

and designated as a Center of Excellence

in PEP and PrEP.

THE CARE CENTER OFFERS:

• Confidential HIV/STI testing

• Long-acting PrEP prescriptions

• Comprehensive medical, dental,

and mental health

Summer is here, and with it comes sun, fun, and

socializing! The CARE Center wants you to enjoy the

season safely. Remember to prioritize your well-being

while soaking up the sun. That means protecting your

skin with sunscreen, staying hydrated, and being

mindful of alcohol consumption.

• SLATHER ON THE SPF: Protect your skin from

harmful UV rays with a broad-spectrum sunscreen of

at least SPF 30. Reapply every two hours, especially

after swimming or sweating.

• HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE: Drink plenty

of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration,

especially when spending time outdoors.

• SEEK SHADE: Take breaks from the sun, especially

during peak hours (10 AM - 4 PM).

Summer events often involve alcohol. Be mindful of

your consumption and know your limits. Remember

that excessive alcohol use can lead to risky behaviors

and health problems. If you or someone you know is

struggling with substance use, the CARE Center can

provide resources and support in a safe space. We

offer confidential and compassionate care to help you

live a healthy and fulfilling life.

A GOOD CAUSE

These clean and sober individuals are participating in the

Spartan for a Cause race to raise funds in support of The Van Ness

Recovery House. We asked them why the chose to participate

and how being of service helps them in their recovery

A NEW LIFE

“I wanted to be a

part of the Spartan

Race because I wanted

to challenge myself

and push myself

past my limits. This

is really out of my

comfort zone, but if

sobriety has taught

me anything, it

is that I have to

change in order to

get a better life.

This has not only

helped my mental

health, but it’s

also supporting a

good cause. I find

service to be important.

When I

was told about this opportunity and

that I would be helping fundraise to give back to the Van Ness

house, I knew I wanted to do it. The Van Ness House has done so

much for me. They have given

me a new life. If I could pay

back just a small amount, then

why not?”

—Germán Pérez Mancilla,

sober since October 17, 2024.

AN AMAZING

STORY

“Doing the Spartan race is

about being of service, joining a

fitness activity, staying healthy,

and combining both my interest

in being active, and then doing

something to show my appreciation

for the Van Ness house.

They’ve helped so many people

regain sobriety and recover from

addiction for so many years. I

know a few folks who were able

GERMÁN

PÉREZ

MANCILLA

to go there and receive lodging to begin their recovery.

I know one young guy who was practically homeless. He

was able to get a bed at the Van Ness House and now that

young man has moved to New York, he is on his own, he’s

working, he’s thriving, and it’s an amazing story. That was

partially due to the work at the Van Ness house, and that’s

honestly the reason why I’m doing this…”

A MILESTONE

“It all started with AIDS

LifeCycle (ALC). Giving

back in such a way was

something I didn’t

think I was capable

of. It turned out to

be an eye-opening

experience in that I

could demonstrate

something for other

people to believe

in. It was for a good

cause, it generated

purpose and motivation

for other people

to participate in

something. I didn’t

think it was possible

for me to do that, so

doing it for ALC is

what inspired me to do this Spartan Race. When I

did ALC, that was my second year in recovery, so

it was just kind of like a milestone for me. Now

that it’s over, I need something to fill that space,

and so this is what came up. This is a way for me

to be of service. My sponsor is really involved in

all of this, so I just take his suggestion, and this

is what was suggested. I went through the Van

Ness Recovery House in 2020. When I was there,

I really respected it. I didn’t finish, so I’ve always

wanted to stay connected to it. This is a really

great way for me to stay connected to it. It’s

also good way to be active.”

—Logan Lopez, sober since January 4, 2023.

A HEALING HEAVEN

Inside Ritz Recovery’s Luxury, Affirming Care

BY VICTOR MELAMED

In a field often defined by rigid, onesize-fits-all

programs, Ritz Recovery

stands out. This isn’t your typical

rehab; it’s a luxury inpatient detox and

residential treatment center that focuses

on helping people find genuine healing

from substance use and mental health

challenges.

Their philosophy is simple: everyone deserves

to be treated with dignity, compassion,

and respect in an environment that

feels safe, especially for communities like

the LGBTQ+ population, who have often

been stigmatized or overlooked in traditional

settings.

THE WHOLE PERSON

At Ritz, the approach is holistic and

highly personalized. They blend evidencebased

therapies with wellness practices like

yoga and meditation, all in a setting that

feels more like a retreat than a hospital.

The goal is to treat the whole person—

mind, body, and soul—and not just the

addiction.

For Ritz Recovery, “luxury” is about

more than beautiful surroundings. It’s the

thoughtful combination of comfort, compassion,

and top-quality care. Clients stay

in private rooms with private bathrooms

and enjoy chef-prepared meals. These

amenities are designed to create a calm,

supportive atmosphere so clients can focus

on their recovery.

PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE

But the true luxury lies in the personalized

experience. With a low client-to-staff

ratio, every person receives deeply customized

care. The clinical team, composed of

experienced and passionate professionals,

tailors each treatment plan to fit the

individual. For LGBTQ+ clients, this means

a priority on affirming care and creating a

space where they can be their authentic

selves without fear of judgment.

22 THE FIGHT | www.thefightmag.com

SENSE OF COMMUNITY

A typical day at Ritz Recovery is a

blend of structured therapy and personal

time. Following medical detox, a client’s

day begins with medication, vitals, and

breakfast, followed by a series of morning

and afternoon group therapy sessions.

These sessions are designed to address

a range of issues, from co-occurring

disorders to trauma-informed care.

Afternoons include downtime for

rest and relaxation, followed by dinner.

In the evening, clients are encouraged

to attend a 12-step meeting, which

provides a vital sense of community

and support for long-term sobriety.

This schedule provides a balanced and

dynamic experience, keeping clients

engaged in their recovery while also allowing

for personal reflection.

BENEATH THE SURFACE

Ritz Recovery takes a comprehensive

approach to treatment, understanding

that addiction is often intertwined with

mental health disorders like depression,

anxiety, and PTSD. From day one, each

client undergoes a thorough psychiatric

and psychological assessment to get a full

picture of what’s happening beneath the

surface of the addiction.

Based on this assessment, the team

creates an integrated treatment plan that

RITZ BELIEVES

THAT GENUINE

RECOVERY CAN

ONLY HAPPEN

WHEN PEOPLE FEEL

SAFE BEING THEIR

FULL, AUTHENTIC

SELVES

addresses both the mental health and

substance use components together. The

care includes evidence-based therapies

like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), as

well as medication management when appropriate.

This approach helps clients not

only get sober but also gain the tools they

need to feel mentally and emotionally well.

LGBTQ+-FRIENDLY

At Ritz Recovery, being LGBTQ+-friendly

and transgender-welcoming is a core

part of their identity. They recognize the

unique barriers LGBTQ+ individuals face

in seeking treatment, including past

trauma and discrimination. The staff is

highly trained in inclusive, affirming care,

using respectful language and listening

deeply to each client’s story.

From intake to discharge, every part of

the process is designed to be welcoming

and safe. They offer flexible, gender-affirming

housing options and ensure that treatment

plans reflect not only a client’s clinical

needs but also their lived experiences and

identity. Ritz believes that genuine recovery

can only happen when people feel safe

being their full, authentic selves, and they

are committed to providing that space for

everyone who walks through their doors.
