When you think about Italy and sparkling wine, Prosecco might

be the first thing that comes to your mind. But Italians are the

world’s busiest sparkling wine makers – they produce around

700,000 million bottles of sparkling wine each year – and their

bubbly scene is much more varied and exciting. In this article,

you can find my suggestions for some truly high-quality Italian

sparkling wines, worth discovering for any bubbly-lover!

Franciacorta, Italian champagne

This extremely elegant sparkling wine is

often called Italian champagne, and indeed

– in terms of quality, taste and price range,

this beauty compares well! Lombardy, the

birthplace of Franciacorta, is located in

northern Italy. Its cooler climate is ideal for

making traditional sparkling wines.

Like champagne, the Franciacorta sparkling

wines are made according to strict rules.

One of the most important aspects is the

time the sparkling wine matures on lees,

because this determines the complexity,

quality, character, and lifespan of the final

result.

Trentodoc, the bubble of the mountains

Franciacorta may be better known among sparkling wine

fans, but Trentodoc is more than a worthy alternative.

Trento was one of the first regions in Italy to be officially

regulated only for the production of sparkling wines, and

the reputation of this region has been maintained by one

famous sparkling wine producer – Ferrari.

The fresh and refined style and high quality of Trentodoc

sparkling wines are shaped by nearby Dolomites. That’s why

these sparkling wines are affectionately called Bollicine di

Montagna, the Bubble of the Mountains.

Ferrari was called the Rolls-Royce of Italian sparkling wines

long before the sparkling wines of Trentodoc became worldrenowned.

Giulio Ferrari founded his own wine house in 1902,

having learned and practiced making premium sparkling

wines in Champagne. In 2015 and 2017, Ferrari was named

the best sparkling wine producer in the world.

A truly elegant and balanced Franciacorta is the Marchese

Antinori Cuvee Royale Franciacorta – floral and fruity, ideal

as an aperitif and particularly suitable with starters based on

vegetables, fish and white meats.

By the way, for the last three years, Ferrari Trentodoc has

been the official podium splash of Formula 1 competitions.

So, if you would like to celebrate with the same sparkling

wine that some of the most iconic podiums in the world of

sport do, look for Ferrari Brut Trento or Ferrari Brut Rose
