PUT GOD AT THE
CENTER OF YOUR
FALL RHYTHMS
The crunch of leaves underfoot. School buses back on the road. Cool evenings that whisper
of autumn’s arrival. All of these remind us that fall is fast approaching—and with it comes a
new rhythm and routine.
What does this shift look like for you? Maybe it’s earlier mornings to get kids off to school,
cheering on grandkids at sporting events, or adjusting your commute to navigate school
zones. Whatever the changes, this season is a reminder that our daily rhythms are always in
motion.
The question is—are you being intentional about including God in those rhythms? What
might it look like to weave Him more purposefully into your days? Perhaps it’s listening to
worship music (check out the LC3 Spotify playlist!) as you get ready in the morning or during
your drive to work. Maybe it’s joining a community group or one of the many Bible studies
offered at church. Or it could be as simple as setting aside time for a weekly walk with a
friend, sharing what you’re learning from God in your quiet times.
Whatever your fall routine brings, make sure God is at the center of it. This issue of The
Current is filled with opportunities to connect, serve, and grow over the next four months.
Maybe it’s the season to step into serving “the least of these” at the detention center or food
bank. Or perhaps God is nudging you to step out of your comfort zone and attend an event
on your own.
As you look through these pages, stay open to His leading. You may be surprised at how He
wants to journey with you this fall.

to the Taliban takeover. Though she is Muslim, she

during this lengthy and difficult detention, Jesus

THE GREAT SHIFT: WHEN THE
REACHED BECOME THE SENDERS
Expanding the Approach to the Unreached World
we will call Mark and James, now sense God’s call
to take the Good News from Niger across Africa to
South Sudan. They have met other Fulani there who
speak their same dialect. These men are begging Mark
and James to come teach them more about Jesus.
In obedience to this call they are preparing to take
their families to S. Sudan this fall to live among these
completely unreached folks. Will you commit to pray
for Mark and James? Pray that God raises the support
that is needed to get two families to S. Sudan.
Taking the Gospel to the unreached peoples of the
world has, for the past 200 years, been largely done
by western missionaries, first to the coast lands and
then moving into the interior of places like China and
Africa. Now we are seeing that the final words of Jesus
to take the Gospel into all the world cannot be done
without the help of the growing majority world of
believers. God is calling His people from everywhere
to everywhere! And through our connections with our
global workers, we get to be a part of that amazing
movement!
In July at the Niger Focus Weekend, at our delicious
luncheon, we got a wonderful glimpse into the
lives of the Tamajaq and the Fulani of Niger. Irhya
Mohammadou and Jon Banke, respectively, shared the
world view and life styles of each of these unreached
people groups. As semi-nomads they share some
similarities, but as separate people groups, they have
quite different cultures. What they do have in common
is their need to know the God who loves and cares
for them. To that end Irhya, a Tamajaq himself, and
his wife Marianne are Tamajaq Bible Translators, and
with their team have completed the New Testament
in Tamajaq. They also work to meet basic needs of the
Tamajaq in Niger who face increasing food costs and
medical needs, and radio broadcasts of the Ways of
Righteousness.
Jon deeply loves the Fulani and has shared Jesus and
life with them for decades. His best friends, whom
Gail Klippenstein and her ministry partners, Ishaya and
Saratu, have gone weekly for many years to Tamajaq
villages to share the Good News with Tamajaq relatives
of Ishaya. A Tamajaq himself, Ishaya is discipling
several men, teaching them what it means to follow
Jesus. Ishaya is another example of God tapping a
shoulder and saying, “Come follow Me and I will make
you fishers of men.”
Andy and Nikki Gray are teaching Biblical Marriage
and Parenting to Nigerien and Beninois couples.
From among these eager young couples they hope to
encourage one or two to take the baton and continue
this much needed Biblical teaching.
Through the Niger Focus Funds LC3 is supporting
several students through Bible School who will soon
be leaders in churches and Bible schools in Niger.

PARTY AT THE PARK
English with Friends gives non-English-speaking
new arrivals to the Tacoma area an opportunity to
practice English. Coming from various countries in
Asia, Africa, and South America, many are already
followers of Jesus.
The evening starts with fellowship over food.
Sometimes we have takeout pizza; other times new
arrivals bring dishes showcasing cuisine from their
home country (it’s delicious and gives us a chance to
expand taste buds!). Occasionally, LC3 families and
community groups deliver American food (thanks,
guys – you know who you are).
SUMMER ESCAPE
Next comes Discovery Bible Study with Ali and Sela
leading us through the book of Mark. New arrivals
practice English by reading and discussing God’s
Word and all of us grow in our walk with God,
discovering new insights from people of other
cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
The evening ends with prayer for one another (this
is where it gets personal). Several months ago, one
of the men shared with me about being arrested and
imprisoned in Iran for several weeks for preaching
the gospel. We pray that all of us can learn new
relational skills and grow in understanding and
compassion for people who are different from us
but still need Jesus. For immigrant families, we pray
that they learn to navigate American culture and the
English language, and that God helps them find work
to provide for their families. Most of all, we pray for
all of us to be changed, to be more like Jesus in all
we do and say.

SUPPORTING CHURCH PLANTING
(JUNGLE EDITION)
GRACE SCHOCK
Since October
of last year,
I have been
serving as a
volunteer to
prepare and
plan an annual
missions
conference
at my
university. The
conference is designed to be completely student
planned and led, and I was part of a team of fifteen
students who organized and executed the conference
in mid-March 2025. Amid the preparations for the
conference, I met a missionary family who serves
with an organization called Ethnos 360 among the
Kuyu people in Papua New Guinea. The Kuyu are an
unreached people group who live in the highlands and
jungle of Papua New Guinea. This missionary family
was one of three that currently live in the tribe with
the hope of forming a written language, sharing the
gospel, and planting a church there.
One of these missionary
families has expressed a
need for a nanny in the field.
Recently, one of their four
children was diagnosed with
an extremely rare genetic
disorder and so they are
looking for an extra set of
hands to help care for her
and assist in homeschooling
their two older children so
that more of their energy
can be given to the work of translation and building
relationships with the Kuyu people. For three weeks in
May of this year, I took a “vision trip” to Kuyu to meet
this family and to explore what it might look like for me
to support them and their children in the field. While
there, I was able to provide support by entertaining
the two younger children so that their parents could
spend more time focused on homeschooling the
older kids and learning the language of the people.
Between household chores that included hanging
laundry, never-ending dishes, cooking from scratch,
cleaning the constant mud tracked into the house,
homeschooling, changing diapers, supervising busy
toddlers, and language & cultural training there was a
lot to do in the few weeks I was there!
Despite the
language
barrier, I got
to spend time
with the Kuyu
people frog
hunting at
night, making
one of their
signature
dishes, hiking (maybe better called mud-sliding), and
playing basketball. I got an up-close glance at what
church-planting looks like among an unreached people
group – it truly requires much patience, endurance,
and reliance on the Lord!
My trip was laced with conversations about missions,
what it might look like for God to close or open doors,
discipleship, calling, and suffering. As I continue to
process these conversations, I recognize ways that my
perspective on evangelism, local and global missions,
and the gospel has been reframed. I praise the
Lord for the way He uses our
experiences to teach us!
I would like to go back soon to
serve their family and support
their ministry for six months
to a year, but I continue to
hold my plans with a loose
hand waiting on the Lord and
trusting that He will establish
my steps in the coming months
and years.

OUR MISSION
Our mission as a church is to advance God’s Kingdom by
making fully-devoted followers of Christ in Lakewood and
the world. This mission comes out of the Great Commission
in Matthew 28:18-20 where Jesus commanded His
followers to make disciples of all nations. And that is what
a fully-devoted follower is: a disciple. Every ministry at LC3
is geared towards making and developing disciples.
