stuff now and then just remember
it’s not totally private and might be
checked if needed.

Exams
We want you to feel confident and ready when it comes to exams - so it helps
to know the rules and what to expect. That way, you can stay focused and
avoid any last-minute stress.
Exam Day
Bring Photo ID
You’ll need valid photo ID like your
student card, passport or driving
licence. No ID = no entry. If you don’t
have one, we can sort a form with
your photo and a teacher’s signature.
Arrive Early
Get to the exam room at least 15
minutes before the start time. It gives
you a chance to settle in.
Bring the Right Kit
You’ll always need a black pen. Some
exams might need extras like a
calculator - check your exam info to
be sure.
What Not to Bring
You’ll need to leave phones,
smartwatches, or anything that can
store/send info outside the room. If
you do bring them, hand them to the
invigilator before the exam starts.
A Few Important Reminders
Listen Up
Invigilators are there to help - follow
their instructions to keep everything
running smoothly.
Exam Clashes
Spotted a clash on your timetable?
Let the Exams Team know straight
away.

If an exam falls on a religious festival,
tell the Exams Team at least 4 weeks
in advance.

12
Your Studies - Higher
Education Programmes
This section provides essential
guidance for anyone studying on one
of our Higher Education programmes.
Academic Regulations
We follow the UK Quality Code
for Higher Education to ensure
your qualification meets nationally
recognised standards. Full details of
the Academic Regulations for your
course are available on the Learner
Portal. If you’re having trouble locating
them, your teacher will be happy to
help.
Assessment Boards
Assessment Boards are held to
formally confirm grades, referrals, and
any special circumstances. Grades
are only final once approved by the
Board, which includes your teaching
team and staff from our Quality Team.
Deadlines Matter
Deadlines help keep things fair and
structured. Everyone is expected to
submit work on time — and developing
good time management is a key
employability skill.
Missed a Deadline? Work submitted
late without permission won’t be
marked. If something unexpected
happens, speak to your Curriculum
Leader as soon as possible. They
may grant a Short-Term Extension
(up to 7 calendar days), but this is not
automatic and must be supported by
evidence.
Mitigating Circumstances
If you’re facing serious personal issues
or health problems that may affect
your ability to submit on time, you can
apply for Mitigating Circumstances,
ask your teacher for the form which
you’ll need to complete along with
appropriate evidence. If accepted,
an alternative arrangement may be
made.
13
Referrals and Resubmissions
Didn’t pass first time? You’ll get one
opportunity to resubmit. Reworked
assignments will be capped at a Pass,
and you’ll have 15 working days to
submit. If the resubmission still doesn’t
meet the criteria, the unit is marked
as a Fail, and the Assessment Board
will decide the next steps — this might
include repeating the unit.
Plagiarism and Malpractice
We take academic integrity seriously.
Plagiarism (copying someone
else’s work) and collusion (working
together on individual work) are
strictly monitored and can lead to
serious consequences. Make sure
you’re familiar with our Malpractice
Procedure on the Learner Portal and
always ask for help if you’re unsure
about referencing or academic
honesty.
Academic Appeals
If you believe there’s been a mistake
or unfairness in your assessment, you
have the right to appeal. This includes:
● Incorrect marking
● Bias or unfair process
● Progression issues
● Grade or award disputes
● Mitigating circumstances not
being considered
Full details are in our Appeals
Procedure on the Learner Portal.
Study Skills & Referencing
Throughout your course we’ll help you
develop critical thinking, academic
writing, and research skills — all built
into your tutorials.
Referencing is essential, and you’ll be
taught how to use the Harvard system
correctly from the start. Support
materials will also be available
throughout the course.
Thinking of Leaving a Course?
If you feel your course isn’t quite the
right fit and want to leave, please
speak to a member of staff before
making any final decisions – there
might be something else that suits
you better and our Careers Team
are here to help.
If you’ve already withdrawn
and didn’t get a chance to talk to
anyone, don’t worry just give our
Customer Services Team a call on
0191 490 2246 and we’ll support
you from there.

includes knowing what to do in an
emergency, how to report concerns
and where to go for help.

of college life. We all have a role to
play in keeping everyone safe and
supported.

Bullying and Harassment
At Gateshead College everyone
deserves to feel safe, respected and
included. If someone’s behaviour
is making you feel hurt, scared, or
uncomfortable, it’s important to
speak up.
Bullying is repeated behaviour that
causes harm, whether physical or
emotional. It can happen in person
or online and often targets people
because of things like race, religion,
gender, or sexuality. Examples
include:
● Physical harm
● Teasing or name-calling
● Threats
● Cyberbullying (through social
media, messaging apps, or
email)
Harassment is any unwanted
behaviour that makes you feel
intimidated, humiliated, or excluded.
It can be:
● Physical – unwanted contact or
aggressive actions
● Verbal – offensive jokes,
comments, or gossip
● Non-verbal – exclusion, offensive
images, or graffiti
● Bullying – repeated, hurtful
behaviour
● Sexual - unwanted sexual
behaviour
If you’re experiencing or witnessing
bullying or harassment, please talk
to a member of staff. This might be
your teacher, learning facilitator,
a member of the wellbeing team
or anyone you feel comfortable
speaking too. We are trained and
here to help and listen, see the
contact details at the end of this

Sexual Violence, Harassment
& Sextortion
We are committed to providing a
safe, respectful environment for all
students and staff- free from sexual
violence, harassment and abuse.
What is Sexual Violence and
Harassment?
Sexual violence includes any sexual
offence under the Sexual Offences
Act 2003. Harassment is any
unwanted sexual behaviour, which
can happen in person or online and
may include:
● Unwanted touching or brushing
past someone
● Sexual jokes, comments, or
name-calling
● Sharing or pressuring others to
share nude images (a criminal
offence if under 18)
● Online sexual bullying or threats
● Upskirting (a criminal offence)
● Unwanted messages or explicit
content
These behaviours are never
acceptable - whether between
peers or otherwise.
We take all reports seriously and act
through our disciplinary procedures
and external support services. Our
whole-college approach aims to:
● Make clear what behaviour is
and isn’t acceptable
● Encourage respectful conduct
from everyone
● Ensure students feel safe and
supported to speak up
If you’ve experienced sexual
harassment or violence - past or
present - speak to any staff member
or a Designated Safeguarding Lead
(DSL). We’ll listen, support you and
help you access free advice.

Prevent Duty – Working together
to defeat terrorism
At Gateshead College, we’re
committed to protecting students
from radicalisation and extremism.
We proudly support the Government’s
Prevent Duty—a national initiative that
helps reduce the risk of people being
drawn into terrorism or extremist
views.
What Is Prevent?
Prevent is about safeguarding,
spotting risks early and protecting
individuals from harm. It aims to
keep communities safe and promote
respectful dialogue, not shut it down.
We work closely with students, staff,
visitors and external partners to make
our college a place where extremist
views have no place and every voice
matters. We believe in creating an
environment where open, respectful
conversations can happen—even
about controversial issues.

Student ID Badges and Campus
security
You’ll receive your badge at the start
of your course and it’s essential that
you carry it at all times while on
campus. Staff may ask to see it and
it also comes in handy for things like
renewing travel cards.
Visitor Sign-In & CCTV
All visitors must sign in at reception.
CCTV is in place across campuses to
support safety and security.
We’re proud of the welcoming
atmosphere here at Gateshead
College—and we all have a role to
play in maintaining it.
Internet safety
Staying safe online is essential. Here
are some key tips to help protect
your privacy and wellbeing:
● Keep details like your address,
phone number, place of study,
and family situation private.
● Only share photos and videos
with people you trust, and be
mindful of where and how they’re
stored.
● Dont believe everything you read
online and some individuals may
misrepresent themselves.
● We strongly advise against
meeting online contacts in
person.
● Use mobile devices responsibly
and with consideration for others.
● Be respectful when sending
messages, sharing images,
or making calls—your digital
footprint matters.

If you have any concern about
your safety or the safety of others,
including the reporting of bullying
or anything you see which causes
you concern, please contact the

Freepop
Our one stop shop of pre-loved
clothes and shoes. Staff and students
take what they need for free.
Need an outfit for an interview?
Trainers for the gym? Something for
fancy dress? Just pop in. We even
stock essentials like deodorant, soap
and condoms because looking after
yourself matters too. But Freepop
isn’t just about free clothes it’s about
flipping the script on fashion. Thrift it.
Upcycle it. Redesign it. Rethink how
you shop. Fashion doesn’t have to
cost the earth, so come find your
new style and get creative.
Small steps…
Our students ask where to start
with living more sustainably; so we
created A Little Book of Tiny Tweaks.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
We are constantly trying to reduce
our impact but we need your
support. Our bins mean we split
general waste from recyclables like
paper, plastic, card, cans and food.
