Wet Leisure Industry Company of the Month

Franchise with us!

In this issue of Business & Industry Today, we are pleased to feature Clearway

Pools Ltd as our Wet Leisure Industry Company of the Month

Clearway Pools Ltd is a family-run company with several

years of experience in the swimming pool and hot tub

industry. It was first established in 2004 in Tabernas,

Almeria, Southern Spain, under the name Piscinas Del

Desierto which means ‘swimming pools of the desert,’

by Andy and Beki Mahoney. Andy, holding a certificate in

pool plant operations, was able to maintain and repair

pools for customers, while the business soon grew into

pool construction and eventually expanded into the spa

and swim spa market.

In 2008, Andy and Beki returned to the UK and

transitioned the company into an online ecommerce

store under the name Clearway Pools. After several

challenging years struggling to secure trade accounts

with major suppliers, their perseverance paid off –

business began to grow quickly, attracting maintenance

contracts and service work nationwide.

“Our mission statement is ‘to make the dream of

owning a pool or hot tub a hassle-free and enjoyable

reality for anyone.’ This means that whether a client

wants a brand-new pool or hot tub installed, or

already owns one that needs servicing, we can guide

them through the whole process. We also provide

maintenance, servicing, diagnostics, repairs, and

a full range of chemicals, products, supplies, and

accessories,” said Andy.

Over time, Clearway Pools has grown into one of the

UK’s leading suppliers in the swimming pool and hot

tub industry, now serving customers across the UK and

abroad. As one of the largest companies of its kind in

the South, Clearway offers everything from pools and

hot tubs to essential chemicals and accessories. With a

dedicated fleet of service vans, the company provides a

wide range of professional services, from installations

and refurbishments to routine maintenance. Their work

has even been showcased on Channel 4’s Love It or List

It, and their hot tubs have appeared in celebrity homes

and on TV productions – most memorably in the cult

classic Red Dwarf, when a hot tub was used in Cat’s

baby scene.

Some of the most popular services offered include:

routine pool and spa maintenance, seasonal pool

opening and closing, hot tub refreshes, one-off pool

cleans, callouts for equipment diagnostics and repairs,

hot tub commissioning, 10-point water testing, and

heat pump installations – alongside an ever-expanding

catalogue of products and accessories.

After seeing great success with the ecommerce store,

Andy and Beki decided to return to the high street,

opening their first physical showroom on Ashley Road

in Parkstone. Its success paved the way for a larger

showroom in West Parley in 2017, followed by another

in New Milton shortly after the pandemic. The corporate

business now has four showrooms, with Hamworthy

being the most recent addition and home to the

company’s new Training Academy.

Opened on May 3rd this year, the Hamworthy facility

was developed to ensure franchisees and staff remain

at the forefront of the industry. This state-of-the-art

academy is the first of its kind in the UK, featuring

modern office space, dedicated training classrooms, a

fully operational indoor pool for hands-on learning, and

the largest pool and spa showroom in the South West.

A built-in working demonstration shop replicates a real

retail layout, offering franchisees a model to follow in

their own businesses.

The success of Clearway Pools is down to the

determination and vision Andy and Beki have shown over

the years, never giving up on a business they knew would

one day succeed. Having learned many lessons along the

way, they concluded that franchising was the best path

forward to accelerate growth, a venture which is led by

their son and Director of Strategy and Growth, Nathan.

Starting a Clearway Pools franchise means joining

a multimillion-pound business with the benefit of a

strong brand and proven model. Franchise partners

can launch quickly and confidently in the lucrative

wet leisure industry without the risks of starting

from scratch. Clearway provides everything needed:

assistance in sourcing a van, a full tool kit, a threeweek

training course, access to the company’s own

branded chemicals, marketing brochures and leaflets,

equipment for service jobs, and the use of a brand with

nearly 20 years of credibility from day one.

Nathan outlined the company’s future goals, “Within

the next five years, we aim to have 45 franchisees,

predominantly covering the South of England from

Cornwall to London, with further expansion into the

Midlands, North, and internationally into Wales, Spain,

and France. We already have interest in France and

strong connections in Spain, so international expansion

should be relatively straightforward. To support this

growth, we will also expand our franchise support team,

bringing in more engineers and administrative staff.”

Clearway Pools continues to raise the standard for

the industry, with the Training Academy providing

unmatched support, training, and innovation.

Be your own boss with the full backing of a trusted

brand. Join Clearway Pools today – the only pool and

spa training academy in Europe!

UKPN achieves 99.9% reliability

with the help of VisNet

automated distribution network

monitoring

UK Power Networks (UKPN), the

UK’s largest electricity distribution

network operator (DNO), achieved

99.9% reliability across its networks

throughout 2024.

The impressive reliability achieved by

UKPN is partly due to the installation

of close to 4,000 VisNet Hubs, and just

under 2,000 ALVIN Reclose2 sets.

The award-winning VisNet Hub

plays a key role in fault detection

and balancing network-wide energy

demand. It was one of several

initiatives implemented by UKPN in

2024 to enhance network reliability

and efficiency.

These measures significantly

contributed to the network’s industryleading

performance

in 2024, ensuring that

over 19 million people

received electricity more

safely, securely and

reliably.

UKPN’s customer-centric

approach is central to

its business strategy. It

helped the DNO maintain

a customer satisfaction score of over

94%, earning it the top spot in Ofcom’s

ranking for customer satisfaction.

Thanks to the ALVIN Reclose2 solution,

UKPN avoided unnecessary substation

visits on more than 2,000 occasions

in 2024. This not only saved over £3

million in penalties but also prevented

nearly 6,500kg of CO 2

e from being

released into the atmosphere.

VisNet Monitoring’s technology allows

owners and operators of the electrical

network to monitor and manage their

low voltage infrastructure, reducing

the time spent by engineers to address

minor faults at substations.

New White Paper: Why Isolation

Adapters Are Used with Vibration

We’re excited to share our latest White

Paper: ‘Why Isolation Adapters Are

Used with Vibration.’

Introduction

Vibration sensors are used in a wide variety

of applications to monitor vibrations in

machinery and equipment. This monitoring

is crucial for detecting faults early and

preventing failures. However, in many

industrial environments, vibration sensors

are exposed to harsh conditions that can

affect their performance and accuracy.

The role of isolation adapters

● Protection against electrical

interference: In industrial

environments, electrical interference

can occur, which can distort the

measurement signals from vibration

sensors. Isolation adapters provide

an electrical barrier that reduces

this interference and improves

signal quality.

● Filtering high-frequency vibrations:

In different applications, highfrequency

vibrations that overlap the

frequencies important for diagnostics

and machine monitoring can make

evaluation impossible. Isolation

adapters reliably filter out the highfrequency

components of vibrations.

● Thermal isolation: In some

applications, extreme temperatures

can affect the performance of

vibration sensors. Isolation adapters

with thermal insulation properties

protect the sensors from these

temperature influences.

Conclusion

Isolation adapters are essential

components in many applications that

use vibration sensors. They protect the

sensors from electrical, mechanical,

and thermal influences, enable easy

installation, and contribute to improving

measurement accuracy. By using

isolation adapters, companies can

increase the reliability of their machinery

and equipment and avoid failures.

Enviricard backs International

Day of Forests 2025 with

Sustainable Retail and Trade

Card Technology

Enviricard, a pioneer in sustainable

card solutions, today announced how

its eco-conscious Retail and Trade

Cards directly align with the goals of

The International Day of Forests 2025

(March 21st), empowering businesses

and consumers to protect global forests

through climate-friendly choices. Backed by

ground-breaking findings from The Carbon

Quota Report (January 2024), Enviricard’s

innovative products demonstrate how

ditching plastic for sustainable alternatives

can significantly reduce environmental

harm while supporting forest ecosystems.

Key findings: Enviricard’s climate and

forest impact

According to The Carbon Quota Report,

Enviricard’s products deliver:

● 88% reduction in carbon footprint

from substrate materials alone by

replacing PVC plastic with bio-based

(paperboard) alternatives.

● 57% lower overall carbon emissions

compared to traditional PVC cards

across their lifecycle (production,

use, disposal).

● Biodegradable composition: Made

from paperboard and (plant-based)

PLA laminate, Enviricard products

break down under industrial

composting, reducing toxic landfill

waste that harms ecosystems.

How choosing Enviricard supports Forests

● Reducing Plastic Demand: By

eliminating petroleum-based plastics,

Enviricard curbs reliance on fossil

fuels – a major driver of deforestation

for oil extraction and mining.

● Lowering Emissions: Forests act as

carbon sinks, but climate change

threatens their survival. Enviricard’s

reduction of carbon footprint to 57%

of PVC cards helps mitigate global

warming, safeguarding forests from

wildfires and ecosystem collapse.

● Promoting Circular Materials:

Enviricard’s bio-based design

prioritises industrial composting,

diverting waste from landfills and

reducing pressure on forest-derived

raw materials.

sustainability goals and

associated procedures which now drive

all its procurement work.

In harmony with this, West Fraser is

making very good progress towards

complying with the European Union

Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

while the group’s UK operations are

also ahead of schedule on the journey

towards Net Zero. Crucially, its systems

and procedures have been significantly

reviews of progress.

As part of these

continuing efforts,

Group Compliance

Manager, Julie Turner,

plays a key part in

overseeing all West

Fraser’s procurement

activities, being

Dynamon, a commercial fleet

optimisation software specialist, is

supporting Transport for London (TfL)

in accelerating the electrification

of its approximately 962-vehicle

engineering service fleet.

Using Dynamon’s ZERO planning

software, this strategic collaboration

has provided the foundations for a

data-driven roadmap to support TfL’s

planning of a zero-emission fleet.

Dynamon’s ZERO software analysed

TfL’s vehicle telematics data

and operational patterns over a

12-month period, covering 356

locations, including depots, Tube

stations, offices, and bus stations.

ZERO identified optimal EV models,

charging infrastructure needs, and

efficient charging patterns, providing

TfL with actionable insights and

recommendations. As TfL’s support

fleet operates across a diverse

network, the analysis was based

on creating dedicated fleet-specific

charging infrastructure on TfL sites,

rather than relying on publicly

available chargers. Vehicles were

classified into three tranches:

● Green vehicles: 50% of TfL’s

fleet recommended as suitable

for immediate electrification with

infrastructure at key locations,

requiring no schedule or route

changes.

● Amber and Red vehicles:

The remaining 50% either

needs minor adjustments

to be electrified (marked as

amber) or additional charging

Fleet & Freight Management

Dynamon supports Transport for London (TfL) in optimising

the electrification of its engineering service fleet

solutions, which will require further

assessment by TfL (marked as red).

Efficient planning for fleet-specific

charging infrastructure was critical to

ensuring cost-effective and operationally

feasible electrification of TfL’s support

fleet. Unlike public charging points, this

infrastructure would be solely for fleet

use, designed to meet the operational

demands of TfL’s vehicles. Dynamon

provided TfL with a data-driven plan to

support a seamless transition of its fleet

to zero-emission vehicles.

of the most cutting-edge makers in

the world among its clients is looking

to branch out into public transport

MarchantCain Group, which designs

and manufactures complex moveable

components in cars, such as window

car market, whose parts require

higher precision, a lower weight and a

much longer lead time than parts for

the mass market.

After its old premises in Tile Hill

became unsuitable, MarchantCain felt

Sovereign Court’s accessible location

Multimodal Review – Top Exhibitors

The most successful Multimodal to date

industry with a theme of sustainability, resilience,

technology and people.

The UK’s leading transport, logistics and supply

chain expo, Multimodal returned to Birmingham’s

NEC on the 17th-19th June, delivering exceptional

insights for logistics professionals with its most

comprehensive speaker programme to date.

Since 2008, Multimodal has been a hub for the

supply chain and logistics community – bringing

together shippers, retailers, manufacturers,

wholesalers, importers, exporters, and the

suppliers who keep them moving. This year’s

three-day trade show provided a powerful platform

for forging valuable face-to-face connections with

both new prospects and long-standing partners.

Shippers and cargo owners came seeking fresh,

more sustainable, and more efficient ways to

move their products, making Multimodal 2025 a

catalyst for innovation and collaboration across

the industry.

Sessions were presented by Logistics UK,

IOE&IT, RFG, BIFA, UKWA and more covering

topical aspects, and Google Digital Garage

also presented three days of social and

digital marketing with one-to-one mentoring

opportunities, which was well received.

The supply chain and logistics professionals that

attended Multimodal 2025 gained invaluable

knowledge from a record-breaking line-up of

industry experts. Featuring over 100 speakers

across 71 conference sessions, alongside 275

exhibitors, it was the most comprehensive event

in its 18-year history.

One new feature for 2025 was the AI Clinics

hosted by Problems Solved. These interactive

sessions and personalised consultations were an

excellent opportunity for attendees to learn more

about how AI can transform their business.

Leading the impressive roster of speakers was Gary

Jeffreys, Managing Director of Maersk, who headlined

a panel discussion on ‘Unlocking UK Connectivity

Puzzle.’ The session explored how cross-modal

connectivity between roads, railways, ports and

warehousing clusters drives productivity improvements

whilst supporting decarbonisation objectives.

In a particularly timely session, Andrea Pearson

OBE, Deputy Director of International Rail and

Rail Freight at the Department for Transport,

joined an expert panel that explored ‘International

Rail Freight - Time for a New Opportunity,’ and

examined the potential for expanded rail freight

solutions.

Sustainability remained a key focus, with Kate

Broome, Sustainability and Social Impact

Director at Kuehne+Nagel UK, leading a panel

that showcased existing case studies on

decarbonisation within multimodal logistics.

Attendees benefited from real-world examples of

eHGV implementation, charging networks, and the

decarbonisation of rail and water freight.

With over 13,500 attendees packing out Hall 4,

feedback from both exhibitors and visitors alike

was outstanding. The free-to-attend supply chain

conference streams were well received across the

We’ve been named Best Warehouse Operation of the Year

Howard Tenens Logistics has been officially recognised

as the Best Warehouse Operation of the Year at the

2025 Multimodal Awards, an accolade that marks a

significant moment for our independent, family-owned

logistics business and its growing national footprint.

This industry recognition reflects the business’s ongoing

commitment to combining smart technology with smart

thinking, all while delivering consistent, customerfocused

performance. Over the past year, Howard

Tenens Logistics has welcomed 17 new customers,

implemented future-facing technologies, and continued

to reduce its environmental impact – all underpinned by

a workforce that takes pride in doing things properly.

While the award is an honour, it’s the principles behind

the recognition that matter most: operational excellence,

innovation at scale, and a people-first performance

culture that drives long-term value for our clients.

“This award recognises our commitment to operational

excellence, innovation, and customer-focused service

across our warehousing network, which is underpinned

by delivering our four operational pillars.”

“This achievement is a direct reflection of the hard

work, dedication, and high standards maintained by

our incredible teams across the business. From frontline

operators to support functions, every colleague

has played a vital role in delivering consistent, reliable,

and best-in-class solutions for our customers.”

“A huge thank you to all our operations and group

across the UK, including strategic locations in Swindon,

Sunbury, Sharpness, Ashby, Andover and Manchester

– Howard Tenens Logistics provides scalable, multisector

warehousing solutions supported by a dedicated

fleet and tailored infrastructure.

The business has delivered several key operational

milestones in the last year. It launched the UK's first uncrated

motorcycle logistics model, expanded its technology trials,

and implemented a 100% lithium-ion MHE strategy in

partnership with Linde. These innovations directly improved

site performance, including a peak trading day where one

site processed 5,891 orders, exceeding target by 18%.

The introduction of an in-house Solution Design team,

promoted entirely from within, has enabled greater use

of advanced analytics such as heat mapping, centre of

gravity modelling and ABC analysis to support customer

growth and site efficiency.

At Howard Tenens Logistics, our four operational pillars:

People and Development, Safety and Compliance, Continuous

Improvement, and Customer Excellence guide how we operate

across every part of the business. These principles

shape how we invest in our people, deliver consistent

service, and drive innovation across our warehousing

network. In the past year, we've made significant progress

on our sustainability targets, including a 31% reduction

in fleet emissions, 33% renewable energy usage, and

the consolidation of over 100 vehicle movements. This is

supported by a sustainability linked funding model that ties

environmental performance directly to financial outcomes.

Our culture of continuous improvement extends to our people

and digital capability. We’ve delivered over 2,600 hours of

training, welcomed 10 new apprentices, and upgraded core

platforms to enhance operational performance and customer

support. With a firm commitment to safety, inclusivity

and resilience, and with Cyber Essentials Plus certification in

Supercharging UK house building: NHBC Multi-Skill Training Hub

for apprentices approved in Lichfield following £100M investment

Planning has been approved in Lichfield for a multiskill

apprenticeship training hub, which will shake up

house-building training and tackle the construction

skills shortage head-on. Part of a planned national

network of multi-skill training facilities spearheaded by

NHBC, the Lichfield hub is the first to receive planning

permission.

The Lichfield Multi-Skill Training Hub, developed by

the National House Building Council (NHBC), the UK’s

leading new home warranty and insurance provider,

will be funded in partnership with the Construction

Industry Training Board (CITB), with land provided by

Redrow Homes.

The new facility at The Lakes Development,

Curborough, is one of 12 hubs planned by NHBC,

which is supercharging industry training with a £100

million investment in a national network of multiskill

training hubs across the UK, supporting 3,000

apprentices a year.

CITB is investing £40 million alongside NHBC’s

investment to establish up to 32 hubs by 2027 to

support the Government’s homebuilding target of 1.5

million new homes.

The NHBC Multi-Skill Training Hub, which is set to open

later this year, is the size of two-thirds of a football

pitch and costs £1 million. It will provide skilled,

site-ready tradespeople faster, giving housebuilding a

significant boost locally.

Why the North needs its own packaging Expo

By UKPackaging Expo | www.ukpackagingexpo.co.uk

The UK’s packaging industry is facing a pivotal moment, one

shaped by rising costs, sustainability imperatives, labour

shortages, and a sharp focus on automation and resilience.

But while these issues are being tackled across the country,

the ability to access the latest thinking, suppliers, and

innovation often depends on one thing: geography.

The North of England – home to some of the UK’s

most dynamic manufacturing, processing, and logistics

sectors – has long lacked a dedicated packaging

event tailored to its needs. The launch of UKPackaging

Expo, taking place at Manchester Central on 3rd–4th

September 2025, seeks to change that.

A Northern powerhouse of packaging

From packaging converters in Yorkshire and Lancashire

to logistics hubs in the North-West and advanced

manufacturing sites in Cheshire and the North-East,

the North boasts a packaging supply chain that is as

broad as it is specialised. Major brands in food, drink,

personal care, pharmaceuticals, and industrial sectors

all call this region home.

And yet, the packaging industry’s biggest trade shows

have typically been located in the Midlands or South-

East, putting the latest technologies, services, and

suppliers out of convenient reach for thousands of

northern-based businesses.

This disconnect has real consequences. Businesses unable

to justify the time or cost of attending events elsewhere

are missing valuable opportunities to meet suppliers,

source innovation, and benchmark progress in areas like

recyclability, compliance, digitalisation, and automation.

A smarter approach to trade events

UKPackaging Expo was created with this imbalance in

never been more important. To deliver

this, the company continues to invest in

mind. It is designed to be an accessible, highly targeted

event that caters specifically to professionals and

businesses operating across the North’s packaging

ecosystem.

Exhibitors will span primary and secondary packaging,

machinery, automation, materials, software, labelling,

design, and sustainability services. Visitors will include

packaging technologists, operations managers,

procurement leads, brand owners, engineers, and

product developers from sectors such as FMCG, retail,

manufacturing, and logistics.

Most importantly, the event is regionally relevant. It will allow

northern-based teams to attend without significant travel

or downtime – and create opportunities for businesses

to connect with both local suppliers and national players.

Supporting the Levelling Up Agenda

While the Government’s Levelling Up strategy is often

debated in political circles, the business case for

decentralising opportunity is clear. Regional trade

shows play an important role in economic stimulation

– driving local innovation, supporting SME growth, and

enabling knowledge exchange without barriers.

UKPackaging Expo supports this vision, aligning with wider

supply chain efficiency – investing in regional infrastructure

like trade events is a step in the right direction.

What to expect in 2025

Held in Manchester, the heart of the North West’s

business and transport network, the event will feature:

● Over 70 exhibitors showcasing the latest in

packaging materials, technologies, and equipment

● A free-to-attend seminar programme focused on

sustainability, smart packaging, automation, and

legislation

● Live demonstrations and new product launches

● Networking lounges and innovation zones to

encourage peer-to-peer connection

Backed by leading industry voices and supported

by a growing number of trade associations, the

UKPackaging Expo is already gaining traction with

suppliers and buyers alike.

In summary

The packaging industry is evolving rapidly – but to meet

future challenges, innovation must be made accessible

across the UK, not just in traditional event hotspots.

UKPackaging Expo aims to bridge this gap by offering

a regionally focused, nationally significant event that

brings packaging professionals together, closer to home.

Health & Safety

Retractable washdown

hose reels and benefits

When it comes to emergency

response and workplace hygiene,

every second counts. Installing a

retractable washdown hose reel next

to your safety shower isn’t just a smart

addition – it’s a vital enhancement.

Here’s why:

1) Immediate area clean-up

After using a safety shower or

eye wash, the surrounding area

can become hazardous due to

chemical runoff or excess water.

A hose reel allows for quick,

efficient clean-up, reducing the

risk of slips and contamination.

2) Better decontamination support

While the safety shower handles

immediate exposure, a hose reel

can help with targeted rinsing

of equipment, clothing, or even

secondary spill areas, improving

overall decontamination efforts.

3) Maintains a safer, more

compliant environment

A prestigious store that redefines

luxury shopping in Edinburgh reopens

with brand new Hochiki fire detection

system.

Multrees Walk, in the heart of St

James’ Quarter, a prestigious shopping

destination in Edinburgh, offers a

curated selection of high-end brands

and premium shopping experiences.

Earlier this year the retail centre

witnessed an extension to a prestigious

store that redefines luxury shopping

in Edinburgh. As the revamped store

prepared to open its doors, a critical

element of its infrastructure was

installed: a state-of-the-art fire detection

system from Hochiki Europe.

High-end luxury retailers prioritise

discreet fire detection systems to

maintain their brand’s aesthetic appeal.

These stores often feature meticulously

designed interiors with clean lines and

minimal distractions, meaning any

visible fire detection devices can disrupt

the desired ambiance and detract

from the overall shopping experience.

By opting for discreet systems, these

retailers ensure that fire safety remains

a top priority without compromising the

store’s luxurious atmosphere.

With its stunning interior design and

exquisite collection of accessories and

ready-to-wear items, this new store

in Edinburgh, demanded a fire safety

solution that was both discreet and

highly effective. GB Integrated Systems

(GBIS), specialise in providing fire

detection and security system solutions

for commercial properties. Having

worked with Hochiki products for several

years, trusting their reliability in retail

environments, they knew the global

fire manufacturer’s ESP range would

provide the perfect answer.
