Wildfires are continuing in Spain and Portugal and Europe as a whole has already had a
record year for destruction, according to an AFP analysis of data from the European
Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

Wildfires have so far ravaged more than one million hectares (2.5 million
acres) in the European Union in 2025, a record since statistics began in
2006, according to an AFP analysis of data from the European Forest Fire
Information System (EFFIS).
Surpassing the annual record of 988,524 hectares burnt in 2017, the
figure reached 1,015,731 hectares by midday Thursday, representing an
area larger than Cyprus.
This calculation is based on a total compiled by AFP from estimates by
country by EFFIS, at a time when Spain and Portugal are still battling
wildfires.
Four countries in the European Union -- Spain, Cyprus, Germany, and
Slovakia -- have already experienced their worst year in two decades of
existing data.
Spain is struggling with numerous fires in the west of the country, which
have claimed four lives. By far it is the most affected EU country by fires,
with more than 400,000 hectares burnt, accounting for nearly 40 percent
of the EU total.
Portugal, which holds the EU record of 563,530 hectares burnt in 2017,
is the second-most affected EU country. It has never had an area of this
size (nearly 274,000 hectares) burnt as of August 21.
Romania follows with 126,000 hectares while in France, 35,600 hectares
of forest have been reduced to ashes, mostly in the Aude region, which
was ravaged by a massive fire in early August.
These calculations by EFFIS, a component of the European climate
monitor Copernicus, only take into account fires that have burnt areas of
at least 30 hectares.

System (EFFIS) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service,
which is implemented by the JRC. All data from EFFIS and presented here
refers to fires larger than 30 hectares.
The data on this page are updated every Tuesday, as soon they are
produced. However, the data are then manually refined in the hours/days
following the last update as more precise satellite imagery becomes
available (learn more at the bottom of this page). This can result in
changes in the values displayed in this page and in EFFIS . Since all data
updates are automatically available in EFFIS we recommend checking the
values in this page against those in EFFIS to ensure you are using the
latest data available.

Fires mapped in EFFIS and presented here are approximately 30 hectares
or larger and may include fires set intentionally for the purpose of
vegetation management.
Note that this data might differ from that reported by national
monitoring systems due to the use of different methodologies (e.g.
differences in the size of the fires mapped or how a wildfire is
categorised).

More on EFFIS' methods and data:
• EFFIS burned areas are manually mapped by trained analysts. Analysts
inspect satellite imagery and delineate the boundaries of the wildfires,
using several ancillary data sources to support the process. The satellite
imagery used in this process includes images from several sensors (e.g.
MODIS, VIIRS, Sentinel-2). Fire perimeters are updated and refined when
more recent or higher resolution imagery is available. These updates can
take place up to eight times per day. Due to challenging conditions such
as cloud cover and smoke, some images may not be suitable for mapping.
This may result in a delayed mapping of some fires. In the final EFFIS
records, every single fire perimeter is mapped with a good quality highresolution
satellite image (e.g. Sentinel-2).
• While thermal anomalies are supporting data sources in the mapping
process, they are not the primary data source. Hot spots from thermal
sensors (e.g. MODIS, VIIRS, Sentinel-3) help locate and prioritise the
areas where to search for active wildfires. However, EFFIS' mapping of
burnt areas is based on optical imagery (e.g. MODIS, VIIRS, Sentinel-2).
Visual interpretation of optical imagery ensures that non-fire heat
sources, such as photovoltaic installations, are not mistakenly mapped as
burned areas.
• Very small fires may be below EFFIS' detection threshold, but these
small events account for only a small fraction of total burned area. Due
to satellite resolution limits EFFIS cannot detect very small fires.
However, their omission does not significantly affect the overall burnedarea
figures. The areas mapped in EFFIS represent about 95% of the total
area that burns in the EU every year.

• EFFIS mapping process captures unburned islands within the perimeter
of the wildfires. The final delineation of wildfire perimeters uses Sentinel-
2 imagery at 20 meters resolution. This resolution allows a detailed
delineation of burned areas and the identification of unburned patches
within fire perimeters. While very small patches may not be detected,
most significant unburned islands are excluded from the burned-area
totals.
• EFFIS includes prescribed and controlled burns. These fires are
intentionally mapped because they contribute to greenhouse gas
emissions and, in some cases, can become uncontrolled. While some
national datasets may identify them as prescribed burns, such
information is not consistently available across Europe, limiting EFFIS'
ability to systematically flag or exclude them.
The worst wildfire event in Europe in 2025 is the overall European
summer wildfire season, which set a new record with over a million
hectares burned, primarily in Spain and Portugal, making it the most
destructive season on record for the region. This crisis is significantly
exacerbated by human-caused climate change, which has increased the
likelihood of extreme fire weather, and also by factors like rural
depopulation leaving vegetation unmanaged.

Climate change-induced heat waves and low rainfall exacerbated this
summer's wildfires in Türkiye, Greece, and Cyprus, making them
significantly more destructive, according to a new study.
The World Weather Attribution (WWA) found that the fires, which
claimed 20 lives, forced 80,000 people to evacuate, and scorched over 1
million hectares, were 22% more severe in 2025, making it Europe's
worst wildfire season on record.
During June and July, hundreds of fires were fueled by scorching
temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), a
prolonged drought, and strong winds.
One of the researchers described their findings as "concerning," stating
that the study revealed "an extremely strong climate change signal
towards hotter and drier conditions."
"Today, with 1.3°C of warming, we are seeing new extremes in wildfire
behavior that have pushed firefighters to their limit.
“But we are heading for up to 3°C this century unless countries more
rapidly transition away from fossil fuels," Theodore Keeping of Imperial
College said.

concerned about their favorite TV show than the planet melting around
them.
Nearly 15% of Americans deny that climate change is real, while climate
apathy is especially high among younger men who should be the most
worried about their future. The disconnect between the urgency of our
climate crisis and public indifference is staggering and terrifying.
New data shows elevated climate apathy and fatalism among millennial
and Generation Z men compared with older generations and women.
This is particularly alarming because young people have the most to lose
from climate change, yet many young men seem to be checking out of
the conversation entirely. Social media algorithms and cultural messaging
are creating a generation of climate fatalists.
The psychological impact of constant climate doom has created a “why
bother” mentality among people who should be leading the charge for
change. Young men are increasingly turning to distractions and denial
rather than engaging with solutions. This demographic shift toward
apathy threatens the political coalition needed for meaningful climate
action, especially since these voters will be making decisions for the next
50 years.

others while continuing their high-carbon lifestyles. The expectation that
someone else will solve the problem reduces individual motivation to
change behavior or demand action.
This blame-shifting mentality prevents the comprehensive approach
needed to address climate change. While corporations and governments
do need to lead, meaningful progress requires changes at every level
including individual choices about transportation, energy use, and
consumption. When people see climate action as someone else’s
responsibility, they become passive spectators rather than active
participants in necessary solutions.

People prioritize immediate problems like inflation and crime over longterm
threats like climate change, even though climate impacts are
already affecting daily life. The human brain struggles to process gradual
threats that don’t trigger immediate fight-or-flight responses. Climate
change feels abstract and future-focused even as it’s causing current
extreme weather, food price increases, and insurance costs.
This psychological bias toward immediate concerns allows people to
ignore mounting climate evidence in favor of more pressing daily worries.
Politicians exploit this tendency by focusing campaigns on short-term
issues while avoiding long-term planning. Without connecting climate
change to immediate concerns like economic security and public safety,
it remains a “someday” problem that never gets prioritized.
Constant exposure to climate disaster stories is creating psychological
exhaustion that makes people shut down rather than take action. The
overwhelming scale of the problem makes individual actions feel
pointless, leading to learned helplessness. Many people are simply tired
of hearing about climate change and have mentally moved on to more
manageable concerns.
This fatigue is compounded by the lack of positive climate stories
showing successful solutions and progress. When all climate news feels
hopeless, people protect their mental health by avoiding the topic
entirely. The media’s focus on doom and disaster without highlighting

When impacts are described in terms of global temperature averages and
