The importance of robotics
for intralogistics
Is robotics just a shortlived
trend or will it
dominate the intralogistics
of tomorrow? The latest
study by Unitechnik
Systems GmbH shows
that companies see
robotic solutions primarily
as a way to increase
productivity and as an
opportunity to combat the
shortage of skilled labour.
Almost 75% of those
surveyed are planning
future investments in robotic systems, demonstrating
the high relevance of the topic. At LogiMAT,
Unitechnik presented a practical example of the
integration of robotic solutions and made the study
results available to interested parties free of charge.
Only just under half of all respondents (48%) already
use robotic technology to support intralogistics, but
almost three quarters will invest in it in the future. This
is one of the findings of the study recently conducted

Creating solid ground for
warehouse efficiency
Bylined to Tom Kavanagh,
General Manager at
Mainmark UK
Efficient warehousing
only works when the sum
of all its parts perform
as they should. Every
aspect of a facility, from
forklifts moving pallets
at speed to automated
guided vehicles (AGVs)
navigating pre-set routes, depends on a predictable,
stable environment. When any element falters, the
ripple effects can be costly.
In reality, delays and downtime are part of the industry.
UK manufacturers collectively lose more than £180
billion each year due to unplanned stoppages,
breakdowns, and inefficiencies. These figures highlight
just how sensitive warehousing operations are to
disruption.
Subsidence compounds this problem in ways that are
often underestimated. An uneven floor may start as a
minor irritation, but soon becomes a safety hazard for
forklift operators. In automated facilities, even small
changes in floor levels can throw AGVs off course or
lead to racking misalignment. Cracked slabs, unstable
driveways, or sinking lorry parks not only slow
throughput but also increase maintenance costs and
risk exposure.
The ground beneath a warehouse may not always be
the first thing managers think about, but when it begins
to move, the entire operation is at stake.
Engineering confidence into warehousing
foundations
As part of a global leader in ground engineering,
Mainmark specialises in restoring stability and level
surfaces to commercial and industrial facilities. Our
technologies, such as resin injection underpinning, are
designed to be fast, efficient, and non-invasive. This
provides a practical solution to subsidence without
lengthy shutdowns or disruptive reconstruction.
Crucially, our approaches are far more sustainable
than traditional underpinning, delivering significant
reductions in embodied carbon at a time when the
logistics sector is under increasing pressure to meet
environmental targets.
Traditional underpinning and piling vs modern
resin injection
For decades, the default response to subsidence was
concrete underpinning or piling. Both are labourintensive
processes
that typically involve
excavation beneath
foundations, installing
piles or pouring new
concrete, and often
require heavy machinery
on-site for weeks at a
time. While effective,
these methods are
disruptive by nature.
Floors or slabs may need
to be broken out, warehouse operations paused, and
external areas dug up to reach foundations. Not only
does this create logistical challenges, but the carbon
footprint of cement, excavation, piling rigs, and plant
use is considerable.
Resin injection methods such as Mainmark’s Teretek®
work differently. Instead of digging down to shore up
foundations, resin is injected directly into the ground
beneath the affected area. As it expands, it fills voids,
compacts the soil, and can lift sunken slabs back into
alignment. The process typically requires only a small
crew, compact equipment, and no excavation meaning
warehouse activity can often continue around the
works.
From a speed perspective, what might take
underpinning or piling
contractors weeks to
achieve can often be
completed with resin in a
matter of hours or days.
Avoiding demolition,
concrete pouring, and
heavy plant delivers
a substantial carbon
saving, something that
is increasingly vital for
warehouse operators
facing Scope 3 emissions
reporting and sustainability targets.
Perhaps most importantly for busy facilities, resin
injection avoids the invasive disruption that traditional
approaches inevitably bring, ensuring downtime is
minimised and throughput is protected.
Resin Injection: the fast, clean fix
One of our most widely applied technologies is
Teretek®, a resin injection system that works by
expanding a specially formulated material beneath
slabs and foundations. The resin compacts weak
ground, fills voids, and can re-level sunken concrete
with millimetre precision. For warehouses, this means
forklift aisles can be restored overnight, racking can
be brought back into tolerance, and loading bays
stabilised all while operations continue.
Precision lifting for complex challenges
For larger or more complex cases, we deploy JOG,
a computer-controlled grouting technology that
uses high-mobility cementitious grout to gradually
and evenly re-level entire structures. This level of
precision is critical in facilities that rely on automation,
where even slight deviations in floor level can have a
disproportionate impact on performance. With JOG,
entire facilities can be lifted back into position without
compromising safety or requiring lengthy closures.
The solutions in action
Our solutions are already benefitting warehousing
operations across the country. At a Pontefract
warehouse, Ultima Furniture faced a challenging
scenario: a 3,700m² facility had subsided by up
to 353 mm over 10-15 years. Concave ‘bowl’
deformations, cracked cladding, and tilted drainage
was compromising worker safety.
Demolition was initially considered but ultimately
rejected as too expensive and time-consuming.
Instead, Mainmark implemented a combination of
JOG and Teretek® to execute a controlled lift across
3,000m² of floor, achieving a maximum elevation of
325mm within just 12 weeks while parts of the facility
remained operational throughout.
In another case at Milton Keynes, a commercial
property developed subsidence after a prolonged
heatwave and tree root encroachment, leading to
foundation rotation and up to 94mm of movement.
Using a dual strategy of JOG for foundation relevelling
and Teretek® for internal void filling, Mainmark
restored both internal and external levels. Importantly,
the building was returned to level within seven days,
allowing window replacements and refurbishment
without business interruption.
Looking ahead at Tomorrow’s Warehouse
At the end of September, Mainmark will be
showcasing these technologies at Tomorrow’s
Warehouse. Our team
will be on hand to share
case studies, discuss the
sustainability advantages
of resin injection and
computer-controlled
grouting, and explore
how these solutions can
be tailored to the unique
challenges of different
facilities. For warehousing
professionals, it’s an
opportunity to see how
ground engineering innovation is directly supporting
safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the sector.
In an industry where even small inefficiencies can
cost hundreds of thousands of pounds every year,
subsidence is not a problem that can be left to chance.
By acting early, warehouse managers can prevent
minor issues from spiralling into costly downtime,
reduce operational risk, and protect their investment in
automation and infrastructure.

stand at Tomorrow’s Warehouse to see how our

Burg Group doubles capacity
with palletiser upgrade
Vinegar producer Burg Group has doubled the
capacity of its palletiser by adding an extra infeed
conveyor. The upgrade of this Qimarox palletiser
was part of the relocation of a production line from
Roosdaal (Belgium) to Heerhugowaard (Netherlands).
The upgrade was carried out by QU&S.
Burg Group makes the world healthier, tastier and
cleaner with natural vinegar and syrup. What started
75 years ago with
a vinegar factory in
Heerhugowaard, has
today grown into an
international company
with production sites
in the Netherlands,
Belgium, Germany,
France, the Czech
Republic and the United
States. With a focus
on sustainability and
innovation, Burg Group
strives to continuously
improve processes and
minimise environmental impact.
Installation and maintenance
For over two decades, Qimarox Upgrading & Services
(QU&S) has played an important role in Burg Group’s
mission. The co-operation started in 2003 with the
installation of the first Lowrunner palletiser at the
production site in Heerhugowaard. Due to the need
for more efficiency and expansion of production
capacity, the first system was expanded in 2009 with
two Highrunner palletisers. In 2021, QU&S further
increased capacity in Heerhugowaard by moving a
third Highrunner palletiser from its production site in
Klundert to Heerhugowaard.
QU&S maintains the palletisers by checking the
mechanics, electrics and controls annually, and
repairing or replacing them if necessary. The result:
minimal disruption and hardly any downtime. “This
proactive approach
to maintenance is the
pledge we make to
Burg Group and all
other companies using
our machines: that we
will provide a reliable
palletising solution and
maximum productivity
by minimising unwanted
stoppages,” says Jasper
Foppen of QU&S.
Relocation of
production line
In January 2023, Burg Group knocked on
QU&S’s door again. The company had decided to
relocate an entire production line from Roosdaal
to Heerhugowaard: a major project that required
major rebuilding of the production hall. QU&S was
commissioned to upgrade one of the three existing
palletisers to make it suitable for integration into this
production line.
The main issue was the capacity of the palletiser,
which was not high enough to handle the extra
products and stack them on pallets. QU&S therefore
converted the machine and created a second infeed
conveyor. Thanks to the double feed, capacity has
more than doubled, from 14 to up to 35 trays per
minute. This was not QU&S’s first conversion project
for Burg Group.
Flexible arrangement
A major challenge was communication between
the various parties involved in the relocation of the
production line. As a result, despite the project team’s
excellent preparation, Burg Group experienced start-up
problems after commissioning in Heerhugowaard.
Appropriate intervention by QU&S quickly fixed these
problems. The end result was a successful upgrade for
Burg Group.
Vincent den Engelsman, manager maintenance &
engineering at Burg Group, said, “I like the fact that
the QU&S mechanics know what they are doing and
it is very convenient that you have one fixed contact
person.”

Hugo Beck, a leading

In the fast-paced world of

New beer foam separator
reduces water wastage
Atlas Copco, a leading brand
in the beer industry for
compressors and N2 generator
systems, recently introduced a
new innovative solution for the
beer bottling process, the Beer
Foam Separator (BFS 900).
Built to be used in combination
with its industry 4.0 ready GHS
VSD+ screw vacuum pump,
the addition of the beer foam
separator is primed to improve
energy efficiency, reduce
lifecycle costs and lower the
rejection rate of over and underfilled
bottles in the process.
The beer foam separator was designed and
developed in partnership with leading brewery
customers and in direct response to the excess
foam production that hampered the beer filling
process. The high amount of foam generated at the
end of the filling process would enter the vacuum
line and disrupt the process leading to poor quality,

part in Mindful Chef’s quest
Founded in 2015 by three school friends, Myles,
Giles and Rob, in Devon, Mindful Chef delivers
healthy, fresh, delicious meals directly to customers’
doorsteps. Sourcing high-quality ingredients from
sustainable suppliers, Mindful Chef has quickly grown
to be the highest rated recipe box in the UK. But its
mission doesn’t stop there as it continues to set new
standards for Mindful eating with every box delivered.
Driven by a passion for freshness and sustainability,
the Mindful Chef team set out to create one of the
most sustainable boxes on the market, boosting
their green credentials and proudly upholding their B
Corp status. They sought packaging that not only
protected ingredients during transit but also embodied
their commitment to the environment at every turn.
By working together, our Smurfit Westrock team
developed the existing Mindful Chef packaging to
make it as sustainable as possible and able to keep
contents cool over extended periods, enhancing
customer loyalty to keep them returning to the brand

“Like we always say, we
provide not just products, but

and the systems we build, contribute significantly
to maintaining quality, shelf life and ultimately,
customer satisfaction. This also encourages more
trust and reliability for consumers, vital for our

Yorkshire Packaging Systems (YPS), the company
was supplied a servo-driven side sealer, the servo

combination with unbeatable speed and precision.
The Hugo Beck servo X packaging machine,
integrated with a double chamber shrink tunnel, offers
a potential throughput of up to 10,000 cycles per hour
in order to comfortably handle the desired number
of instant meals. Such output speed is achieved by
a combination of the servo-driven motor and the
continuous motion transverse sealing bar, which
moves with the product, ensuring there is no stop/

Reliable under
the most
demanding
conditions
The confectionery and snack industry thrives on
variety. With its innovative, sustainable, flexible and
future-proof packaging solutions, Schubert helps
manufacturers respond quickly and easily to changing
market requirements. At ProSweets Cologne 2025,
visitors had an opportunity to experience the machine
manufacturer’s cutting-edge technology in person.
Schubert presented an innovative blank feeding
solution for cartoners and providing information about
a new erecting unit with a vertical magazine.
A TLM cartoner with a single-lane erector, seamlessly
interacting with the automated Comfort Feeder blank
feeder, was on display at the stand. The machine
exemplifies Schubert’s ‘Power Compact – high
performance in the smallest of spaces’ concept.
Thanks to the Comfort Feeder, the cartoner
automatically feeds blanks directly from the pallet.
The comprehensive solution is a uniquely streamlined
machine concept that combines erecting, filling and
closing at up to 60 cycles per minute in a compact line.
A small number of system components, lightweight
and quick-change robot tools – some of which are
manufactured using 3D printing – and the Comfort
Feeder enable up to five hours of operation without
having to refill the carton blanks. This is of real benefit
to machine operators.
To provide manufacturers with even more support
when packaging multi-variant product assortments,
Schubert has also designed a new vertical magazine
in which blanks of different sizes are stacked on top of
each other – another advantage in terms of flexibility.
Additionally, a new A3 erecting unit supports singlelane
erection of the boxes. This allows manufacturers
to use fewer robotic units in their lines, enabling them
to benefit from a more cost-effective overall solution.

Mobile racking system for Greenteam/
Nypan
In order to create more storage capacity,
the Hungarian company Greenteam,
in cooperation with its sister company
Nypan, modernised its warehouse with an
OHRA cantilever racking system mounted
on five traversing carriages. Within a
compact area of just 6 x 15 metres,
Greenteam has created the high storage
capacity needed to store worktops in 120
different colours.
The traversing carriages can be controlled
by remote control from the forklift truck,
thus enabling worktops to be quickly
stored and retrieved. With the mobile
racking system from OHRA, the company
has tripled its total storage capacity. In
addition, customers can now be supplied
40% faster.
A new video illustrates the
compactness of the racking system

A quarter of a century after
its founding, HUBTEX UK has
grown from humble beginnings
in a garage to become a
major player in the UK market.
HUBTEX UK’s history is one of
continuous growth, innovation
and a firm commitment to quality
and safety.
HUBTEX’s roots go back to
the early 1980s, before Malcom
Manser and HUBTEX GmbH had
the idea ofsetting HUBTEX UK.
HUBTEX UK began operations in
1999 – initially in a small garage that served as a sales
office. The first branch was opened in 2002, and an
office with an attached workshop followed in 2004.
Since then, HUBTEX UK has undergone considerable
change. The company, which started as a one-man
operation, now employs 16 people. In 2008, HUBTEX
UK moved to its current building in Milton Keynes.
Another milestone was reached when the service
department was expanded to 10 technicians. The
team now has the responsibility
of ensuring that the vehicles are
comprehensively maintained and
serviced.
The first customers started using
Hubtex sideloaders as early as
1986. This model symbolises
the durability and reliability of
Hubtex products. In 2004,
HUBTEX UK exhibited for the
first time at IMHX, a major trade
fair in Birmingham. This market
positioning enabled the company
to expand its product range to
include multidirectional forklifts and to strengthen its
market presence in order picking vehicles for kitchen
worktops, wood-based materials, laminate, decorative
panels, aluminium and plastic profiles. Other important
milestones for the company included the launch of the

Virtual warehouse assistant has an open
ear for its colleagues
UniWare is the heart of automated logistics centres
and, in addition to warehouse management, also
handles material flow control and system visualisation.
At LogiMAT 2025, Unitechnik demonstrated how the
warehouse management system will communicate
with logistics employees in natural language in the
future. In addition, an AI-based cobot from Sereact &
the Skypod system from EXOTEC demonstrated new
approaches to modern warehouse automation live.
The own warehouse management system UniWare
from system integrator Unitechnik provides a wide
range of information, including the current system
status, storage location occupancy, fault message
history and order progress. The warehouse
management system uses dashboards and graphics
to visualise all important information so that every
UniWare user can access it. In future, all authorised
employees will have even easier access to this data by
communicating with UniWare in natural language. This
is the logical further development of the UniWare-
AI control centre assistant presented at the last
LogiMAT.
“Show me the five most frequent faults in lane 1
in the last month.” “How many order items did we
dispatch the day before yesterday?” In future, this
or similar questions could be sent to the warehouse
management system via the employee’s smartphone
headset. The desired information appears on the
display in the form of text, speech, graphics or tables.
By communicating in natural language, UniWare
also makes it possible to provide sophisticated and
individual information about the logistics centre’s
operations without having to operate the software
manually.
