Couple left

from disaster

Driving to the conditions saved
a couple from a 100-metre drop
after rolling their car near
Akaroa.
The couple were travelling
towards Akaroa on Flea Bay Rd
on Sunday afternoon.
The road is a very narrow
stretch of gravel on a hillside
with room for only one car
through at a time.
The driver hit a 300mm rock
in a culvert on the roadside.
The impact caused the driver
to lose control of the vehicle,
sending it up the bank and
rolling it onto its side.

Williams said the couple were
very lucky.
There was only about half
a metre between their station
wagon and the edge of the
steep bank, which drops down
100m.
“If they had gone down, the
outcome would have been very
different,” Williams said.

Plans for stolen sculpture to soar again

Plans are accelerating to
replace the stolen Llew
Summers sculpture at Mt
Pleasant Community Centre.
The centre is planning to
recreate the 2.2-tonne bronze
sculpture Flight, which stood
outside the building before it was
stolen on June 4.
A 44-year-old has been arrested
in connection with the theft and
he will appear in the district
court on Tuesday.
Police said they believed the
sculpture had been sold as scrap.
Bay Harbour News understands
the man arrested was the driver
of the vehicle believed to have
been involved in the theft.
The centre’s project to replace
the sculpture is still in the early
planning stages, with funding and
the design yet to be determined.
However, the new sculpture
will be made from different
material.
Centre president Derek
McCullough will meet Summers’
wife, Robyn, next week to discuss
the recreation.

Plan to catch boy racers on camera

A portable CCTV camera is
being proposed in an effort to
deter boy racers.
Banks Peninsula city council
candidate and former Breeze
radio presenter, Dave Dunlay,
has been working with Cass
Bay residents and Belfast
Residents Association chair
Charlotte Gavin to implement
a solution to anti-social driving
behaviour.
The long-running
problem has plagued
residents for more than
20 years, with roads often
dominated by noise,
speeding, and dangerous
driving on weekend nights,
said Dunlay, who lives in
Lyttelton.
"We can move
it to different
locations and
operate it at
night-time,
so anybody
speeding
through can
be caught on Dave Dunlay
cameras.
“Then those images can be
sent through to NZTA to decide
if they’ll fine them,” he said.
Gavin said a portable CCTV
camera has been used in
Belfast since April last year.
As a result, she said vehicles
were impounded within
weeks, burnout hotspots were
abandoned and by March this
year complaints had fallen to
near zero.

peninsula will be publicised to
act as a deterrent. The camera
will be checked daily for
evidence of speeding, which
will be shared with NZTA for
possible enforcement.
The initiative needs to raise
$4180 to fund a two-month trial
of the camera.
Not everyone is convinced
the initiative will work.
Dunlay’s opponent in October’s
local body elections, city
councillor Tyrone Fields,
questioned the motivation
behind it.
"I’ve been on the community
board for six years, this is
the first time I’ve heard him
(Dunlay) come up with an
initiative. What strange timing.
"Of course it’s electioneering,
it’s ridiculous,” he said.
Said Dunlay: “Having lived on
Brittan Tce for 20 years, we’ve
experienced the noise, then
through the campaign have
met more residents who are
affected.
"It’s just a group of us trying
to do something because
nothing’s been done all this
time.”
Fields said he has lobbied
police on the issue, but was told
it does not have
the resources
to tackle it.
"You can
come up with
all the weird
and wonderful
solutions in the
world, but until
the Government Tyrone Fields
properly
resources the police to do the
job we need them to do, we’re
not going to solve the problem.
You cannot camera away
stupidity,” he said.
Said Dunlay: “That's
been pretty much been
his position the entire time
he has been in council
and nothing’s been done.
The community feels like
something's got to happen
and this is a way of making
something happen.”
Fields said the city council is
looking to implement measures
at certain hotspots to make it
more difficult for boy racers to
congregate.
A community meeting has
been organised for September
25 at 6pm at the Lyttelton
Recreation Centre where
options to deter boy racers
already used in Belfast will be
outlined.
Coastguard among
finalists for awards
Coastguard Sumner and the
Lyttelton-based Coastguard
Canterbury are finalists
in the volunteer awards
of excellence. Sumner is
nominated for Coastguard NZ
unit of the year and rescue
of the year for its recovery of
a person who fell off Godley
Head. Canterbury is a finalist
for community engagement
unit of the year. The winners
will be announced on
September 22.
First godwits spotted
The first godwits have
been spotted on the Avon-
Heathcote Estuary this week.
About 150 birds have arrived
and there are 1500 more to
come. The birds fly 12,000km
from Alaska to the estuary

Newton brothers keep their golfing
rivalry on course for 55 years

Fierce competitors, but
brothers on and off the fairway,
Wayne and Rob Newton added
another chapter to their rivalry
– 55 years after their first
Kaituna Golf Club final.
Rob, 73, edged out his older
brother on Sunday for the third
time, winning a close match
play battle on the 36th hole.
It was a tight contest
throughout, with the lead
swinging back and forth.
Wayne, 78, was one up after
nine holes, but by the 18th, Rob
had turned the margin in his
favour.
Wayne then went out of
bounds on consecutive holes,
leaving him three behind at the
20th.
He clawed his way back,
winning three of the course’s
toughest par fours at the 21st,
29th and 30th, to level the
match with six holes to play.
The brothers remained even
until the third-to-last hole,
when Rob’s par against Wayne’s
bogey put him one up. They
halved the 35th, keeping the
match alive.
“I thought I just had to try
and get as close as I could to the
pin,” Rob said.
Wayne’s tee shot on the par 3
final hole missed the green, but
he chipped close for par.
“It’s always hard
because I’d like to see
him win too. We get on
pretty well, we just try to
play our best. If he wins,
great, if I win, that’s
alright too.”

Rob’s opening shot found the
green, and after a long putt
brought him within two metres,
he calmly holed out to seal his
fifth club title.
The pair shook hands, with
Wayne congratulating his
brother on beating him again.
“We’re competitive, but we
don’t let our emotions run
high,” Wayne said.
While Rob enjoyed the win, he
could not help but sympathise
with his older brother.
“It’s always hard because I’d
like to see him win too. We get
on pretty well, we just try to
play our best. If he wins, great,
if I win, that’s alright too,” he
said.
Their rivalry goes back to
1970, when they first met in the
club final.

On that occasion, 36 holes
were not enough to split the two
and the match went to sudden
death before Rob prevailed on
the 39th.
History repeated last year,
when the brothers met again
after 54 years.
Rob was two up with three
left to play, but Wayne fought
back to square the match
heading into the final hole.
Rob held his nerve, sinking
a par while Wayne dropped a
shot, handing a second victory
to his brother.
The Newtons grew up on a
Kaituna Valley farm, playing
rugby for Waihora and cricket
for Kaituna.
Both were left-handed batters,
with Rob going on to represent
Wellington, Canterbury, and
New Zealand U23s.
They started golfing at
Kaituna when Rob was eight
and Wayne was 13.
While careers and family life
took them away from the club
for long stretches – both now
live in Christchurch – Wayne
said it was pretty special to
still be out playing where it all
began.
“That’s really it for me,
otherwise I wouldn’t be doing
what I’m doing, it’s got big
sentimental value for the both
of us,” he said.
Their father, Walter, joined
the club in 1950 and designed
the current course layout on the
back of a cigarette pack.
The new layout opened in
1962, three decades after the
club was first established.
Said club captain Richard
Hawkins: “There’s probably a
handful of families that have
been institutions there and the
Newtons were very much one
of those families.”
Wayne has won nine
championships, served as club
captain in 1967, president
from 2016 to 2022, and is a
life member. He also spends
countless hours helping
maintain the course alongside
other volunteers.
He persuaded Rob to return
three years ago.
When asked if he regretted
it after two consecutive final
defeats, Wayne replied: “No, I
like the challenge.”
The brothers admit their
reign may be nearing its end,
with a new crop of players
emerging.
Wayne now coaches a group
of 15-year-olds on Saturday
mornings.
“It’s to keep the club going,”
he said.
Still, the Newtons are
determined not to make it
easy for the next generation
of Kaituna golfers, with both
planning to return for another
run at the club title next year.

deeply upset the community,
and police have worked hard to
locate the artwork and identify
the person responsible,” said
acting Detective Sergeant Steph
Trengrove.
“Unfortunately, our
investigation indicates that the
sculpture has been destroyed
and much of it has been sold
as scrap metal, with only small
pieces of it able to be recovered.
“While we are pleased
to have apprehended the
offender, police would like to
acknowledge the devastation
the residents feel in losing such
a significant
artwork.
“We would like
to warmly thank
key community
members who
assisted officers
with information
and support
throughout the
investigation,
including those

from the scrap metal industry.”
Said McMcCullough: “We’re
absolutely elated, but it doesn’t
change the fact it is gone.”
He said the community centre
has felt a bit empty since the
sculpture was taken.
“Every day you see an empty
plinth there, you’re reminded
of it.
“I think (the recreation) will
sort of revive the spirits of all
those people who missed it
being there.”
Flight, a depiction of a bird
soaring over the sea, was
Summers’ final work before he
died in 2019.
After two years of fundraising,
the sculpture was
purchased to honour Summers,
whose funeral was held at the
community centre.
The breakthrough in the case
came when pieces of scrap
metal from the stolen sculpture
were discovered at a scrap
metal yard.

Trust hopes to rise again with
support from their community

A longstanding non-profit youth
programme in Sumner is asking
the community for help to get
back on its feet.
The Shoreline Youth Trust
is seeking $150,000 a year to
re-open its services. About
$120,000 would cover staffing –
including a full-time manager
and two to three part-time youth
workers – with
the remainder
going toward
programme
delivery and
facility costs.
The trust,
which has been
providing services
to youth for
24 years, was
forced to shutter

operations in April after missing
out on funding from donors.
“We’ve had a lot of parents and
kids upset that we’ve gone into
hibernation,” said trust chair
Chris Jansen.
“The hardest part was having
to tell staff, who are really loved
by the community. It was pretty
heartbreaking actually.”
Jansen would not name
the donors who had declined
the funding applications, but
said the organisation received
only $40,000 of the $100,000 it
expected last year.
​Shoreline Youth Trust is looking for $150,000 annually to re-open its services, which it had been providing for 24 years.
Donors attributed the decision
to a rise in funding applications.
“It was a bit of a crisis,” he said.
Shoreline operates Fuse,
an after-school and holiday
programme at Matuku Takotako:
Sumner Centre, and Lightswitch,
a free counselling service for Te
Raekura Redcliffs School.
“The approach is about positive
youth development, trying to
build some connections with
another adult in the lives of these
kids to support them as they
grow up,” Jansen said.
At its after-school programmes,
Fuse typically had 20-50 children
attending.
Shoreline has relied entirely on
philanthropic funding, usually
about $100,000 annually, for
salaries and rent for its library
space.
When several donors turned
down applications late last year,
cash flow dried up, forcing the
organisation to close for the first
time since its founding in 2001.
Now Shoreline is exploring
other funding options, including
community contributions
and sponsorships, alongside
traditional philanthropic support.
Jansen and project manager,
Alicia Mallo are preparing flyers
outlining the trust’s situation
and asking residents for input.
The flyers will be delivered to
every household in Redcliffs, Mt
Pleasant and Sumner this month.
The trust will then host a
community meeting at Matuku
Takotako on October 10.
After the meeting, trustees
will decide if they feel the
$150,000 target can be met. If
so, the trust aims to resume
services before 2026.
​After April’s successful inaugural
edition of Art in the Attic, the
fundraiser is returning – this time
with a twist.
Themed around a spring
clean-out, the event will not only
feature unwanted art pieces,
but also old tools needing a new
home.
From Monday, people can
donate unused tools and art
pieces to the centre. About 40
to 50 pieces of equipment have
already been donated.
All proceeds will go toward the
Mt Pleasant Community Centre’s
Raise the Roof campaign – a
project to install a louvered roof
on its front deck.
The community centre is
one of the busiest in the area,
with around 1000 people using
it every week. However, when
the weather makes the deck
unusable, it restricts available
space, said centre president
Derek McCullough.
He estimated the cost of the
project at about $125,000, of
which $50,000 has been raised so
far. The first Art in the Attic event
brought in about $2000.
The centre has already secured
resource and building consent for
the roof installation and is now
waiting on the remaining funds
before work can begin.

a year of discussions.
“It really was an art piece
people were buying because
they were buying Christopher’s
design. It wasn’t just the
house and land – a lot of the
furnishings were included, for
example,” she said.
Carter said she was unable
to disclose the identities of the
buyers or the sale price. However,
she told OneRoof last year
she had expected to sell the
seven-bedroom home for more
than $5m.
“It was beautiful, it was stunning
– not everyone’s cup of tea,
but it is one of my career highlights
that one,” she said of the
property.
Hall bought Glenralloch
Homestead in 2020 for $1.165m.
He had intended to make it his
permanent home, but work
took him back to the Northern
Hemisphere, where he has been
based for many years.

house into a masterpiece
in international design.
Carter told OneRoof: “Christopher
purchased the property
as his own private home and
completely redid the house.
Because he’s done it for himself,
the quality of the renovation is
almost unmatched.”

guest house was also

Carter told OneRoof the
property attracted a huge
amount of interest from both
local and international buyers
– many who hadn’t realised
they weren’t eligible to buy in
New Zealand. It was especially
appealing for those looking for
a private escape.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic,
Hall had been working
in London, Istanbul, Moscow
and Barcelona.
One of Hall’s most renowned
clients is Saudi Prince Faisal bin
Sattam bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Hall told Home magazine
the Saudi Arabian projects
he has worked on for the
royal family and other
wealthy clients were almost
unimaginable in scale. He said
he designed compounds with
space for “nannies and teachers
and basketball courts and that
sort of thing”.
The homestead’s Arts and Crafts-era features have been meticulously restored, while the secluded exterior includes a pool with stunning views.
Foreshore plan approved despite residents’ opposition

A group of residents have failed
in a bid to overturn a landscape
development plan for Purau.

Peninsula Community Board
accepted the city council staff
recommendation to approve its
Purau Foreshore and Reserves
Landscape Plan on Monday.
Construction is expected to start
in the middle of next year.
Some residents opposed part
of the plan, which involves placing
rocks along the western
foreshore.
The rocks are intended to
restrict private vehicles from
parking on the grassed area, to
prevent damage and protect the
site’s archaeological and historical
significance.
Residents said they were frustrated
they would no longer be
able to launch boats from the
foreshore.
They also questioned the evidence
of historical significance
and raised concerns that more
cars parking on Purau Ave could
make the road dangerous.
“Everyone’s feeling disappointed,
feeling very unheard,”
a Purau Residents’ Association
spokesperson said.
“We thought there was probably
a bit of wiggle room there to
come up with another option.”
Despite the disappointment, the
spokesperson acknowledged the
outcome was inevitable.
The amended landscape plan for the
Purau foreshore and reserves was
approved on Monday.
Oral and written history identifies
the western foreshore as part
of a kāinga (settlement) in the
1800s.
“Council would like to protect
it,” said community parks manager
Al Hardy.
Two archaeological geophysical
surveys, conducted in 2009 and
2024, suggest the western foreshore
has a high likelihood of
archaeological significance,
Hardy said.
The scans revealed four archaeological
pits which could be
remnants of occupation or burial
sites.
Te Hāpū o Ngāti Wheke told city
council staff the site’s cultural and
historical significance must be
respected.
Said Banks Peninsula city councillor
Tyrone Fields: “The only
thing that people may not be able
to do is to drive their car onto the
western foreshore.
“People can congregate there.
People can even have a picnic
there – they’re encouraged not to
because that’s culturally sensitive,
but it didn’t suddenly just become
culturally sensitive because of
what we approved yesterday.”
Of the 36 consultation submissions,
36% supported the
plan, 36% opposed it, and
28% somewhat supported the
redevelopment.
Given the divided responses,
the residents’ association spokesperson
said a compromise would
have made more sense.
She described the consultation
process as a box-ticking exercise.
“If they had come to us earlier,
they would’ve learned a lot and
we would have probably been
able to design something better
together and never got to this
stage or this tension.”

Accident to advocacy for avid cyclist

Spending five days in hospital
after being hit by a car in 2013
was the catalyst for cyclist Robert
Fleming to dedicate his spare time
to helping make Christchurch
streets safer for cyclists.
“It was just the usual broken
ribs and stuff, but it did linger for
quite a while,” he said.
The enforced downtime gave
him space to think.
“I thought, I think the city’s got
to be a little bit better for riding a
bike than it is at the moment.”
The drive to make a change
saw Fleming, 72, attend a Spokes
Canterbury meeting as soon as he
was able.
“I sat quietly for the first year
and learned a lot,” he said.
Over the past 12 years he has
contributed to the volunteer
cycling advocacy group’s
submissions and made his own
deputations to community
boards.
He later became treasurer
and organised Spokes’ annual
Biketober event for five years.
“The thing I can do is soft touch,
subtle advocacy – getting people
to see what it’s about,” Fleming
said.
After retiring as a pharmacist
last year, Fleming began
volunteering for Medical Aid
Abroad, helping sort and analyse
unused medication.
The charity, with bases in
Auckland and Christchurch, sends
surplus, in-date medicine and
supplies to developing countries

However, Fleming’s real passion
is co-ordinating the Wednesday
Wheelies. Every Wednesday
at 9am, cyclists, mostly aged
between 60 and 80, meet at the St
Albans Community Centre.
Groups of up to 12, each led by
an experienced rider, take on a
different route each week.
In the past year, the average
number of riders each week has
gone from 42 to 56, Fleming said.
“The highest number of riders
we ever had was 75.”
Fleming said the group’s
popularity was helpful when
advocating for better cycling
infrastructure in the city.
His volunteer work with
Wednesday Wheelies earned
him a civic award last year for
services to cycling.
The citation described him as
“a quiet enabler who, through
his good nature, strong people
and organisational skills, and
sheer hard work has made
Christchurch a better place to
live.”
“It was nice that my work is
appreciated,” he said.
Fleming continues to
advocate for his fellow riders
and make cycling safer for all.
Cycleways, he says, have always
been a contentious issue, but
they remain key to change,
encouraging and giving more
cyclists the confidence to ride
on the city’s roads. “I think
Christchurch drivers are 10 times
better than they were, and that’s
purely because there are not
many roads these days where
you don’t come across a cyclist
on your travels."
As cycling becomes increasingly
popular in Christchurch,
Fleming says he will be part of it
for as long as he can.
“I’ll carry on doing what I’m
doing, as long as I can get out of
bed in the morning.”
The city council’s cycle
counters back up his optimism.
In 2024, a record 4.08 million
counts were logged across 31
locations – up from 3.8m in 2023
and 3.6m in 2022. Since the first
counters were installed in 2016,
cycleway use has increased
by more than 30% across the
network.
A hump day in election lead-up

$160,000, but this includes
others costs such as temporary
traffic management.

debate would cause those leftleaning
councillors to change
their minds on raised platforms.
So you can only deduce that
it’s because of the campaign
period,” said Henstock.
The increasing number of
raised platforms and speed
humps throughout the city
has become a divisive election
issue, with right-leaning city
councillors and candidates
often criticising their leftleaning
counterparts for
supporting them.
Only mayoral candidate and
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Sara Templeton voted to keep
the proposed raised platform
last week while all other city
councillors and Mayor Phil
Mauger agreed to remove it
from the design.
McLellan acknowledged
changing his position on the
raised platform
during the
debate, but
said it was
not to do with
his election
campaign.
“I changed
my mind

thinking this

big deal and it
doesn’t seem
to have a lot
of community
support,” he
said.
Donovan said Celeste Donovan
her votes “won’t
change just because it’s election
time”.
“I keep an open mind right
until the last moment,” she said.
“That’s what debates are for.”
Harewood Ward city
councillor Aaron Keown has
accused all left-leaning city
councillors of voting against the
platform only because they do
not want to lose votes.
“The rats are jumping
from the ship. I think they
realised the writing was on the
wall and I’ll put up a (Facebook)
post saying who voted each
way.”
McLellan said it was “cynical”
for other city councillors to
criticise him for changing his
mind during the debate.
“We need to able to go into a
debate with an open mind and
change if necessary. That’s what
happened here.”
Gym charged
over fees
The country’s biggest gym chain,
City Fitness, is facing charges
under the Fair Trading Act.
The chain has six gyms in
Christchurch.
The Commerce Commission
said it had filed 16 charges
alleging City Fitness’ advertised
membership fees were misleading
because they did not include
a compulsory 3% fee.
The commission said the
gyms labelled it a transaction
fee, but it was not related to the
cost of processing transactions.
The charges relate to a period
between December 21, 2023 and
April 30 this year.
Said commission competition,
fair trading and credit general
manager Vanessa Horne: “After
City Fitness introduced the compulsory
3% fee, it continued
advertising a weekly price that
did not include this fee, effectively
advertising a price that
people couldn’t get. City Fitness
also positioned itself as offering
one of the cheapest membership
options, at $6.99 per week.
Although after adding on the
compulsory fee, this was not
always the case.”
CityFitness chief operating
officer Doug Hatten said after
being made aware the fee was
potentially misleading the gym
removed it and implemented a
new inclusive price from May 1,
2025. He said they would review
the commission’s findings and
apologised to anyone who may
have been confused by the
previous fee structure. – RNZ

review costs and get rates down, with any
underspends going directly to reduce rate
increases. And I will never sell strategic assets
like Lyttelton Port Company or the Airport.
Christchurch has momentum. My promise is to
keep it going with fair rates, reliable services,
and practical leadership that delivers results.

I grew up in Sumner and Ōpāwa. I love it
here - but as my wife and I struggled to find
our first home, we realised that Christchurch
isn’t built for young families, or for our future.
That’s why I’m running for Council.
I’ve knocked on doors from Scarborough
to Sydenham. Most of us want the same
things: pipes and roads kept in good repair;
a rates bill that retirees can afford; forested
hills and healthy rivers; decent housing
in the CBD to reduce suburban infill and
sprawl; and a Councillor you can call when
issues crop up.
When it comes to rising rates, we need
ideas, not just rhetoric. In the short term, I’ll
advocate for a fairer rates rebate for seniors
living on super.
In the mid-term, I’ll cut contractor waste by
bringing road maintenance work in-house.
And in the long-term, I’ll work to build a
credible plan to house our rising population
in the inner city, so that as Christchurch
grows, ratepayers don’t need to pay for
the infrastructure that comes with endless
sprawl.
As a community organiser, I’ve worked with
small businesses and residents to block a
bad deal with Wilson Parking, won a Living
Wage for library workers, and kept Lyttelton
Port 100% Christchurch-owned.
I understand local government and will work
with you to keep our community voice at the

to protect our unique environment.
Every bay and valley has its own voice. My
job starts with listening — and then working

I’m actively involved in the south Christchurch

Westmorland Residents’ Association Committee

into the needs of both our rural and urban
communities.
My priorities include keeping rates low through
efficient spending and reducing the cost of
doing business with ECAN. We can achieve
this by simplifying processes and making
compliance requirements practical and
focussed on outcomes.
I want to see sensible urban development that
protects our productive food-producing soil so
we can ensure long-term local food security.
Canterbury is a growing region. Our urban
development needs to be carefully managed to
protect our highly productive land and ensure
long-term local food security. People need to be
housed, and they also need to be fed.
I believe in working with catchment and
conservation groups to improve water quality,
improve biodiversity, and manage pest control.
ECAN also needs to ensure we have suitable
floodplain management and drainage schemes,
as well as reliable public transport options.
I will bring experience, integrity, and common
sense to the ECAN table, working to improve
outcomes in Canterbury for you, the ratepayers.

My wife and I have lived in this council ward
for around 20 years and will hopefully be here
many more. To relax I regularly walk hills and
motorcycle ride around Banks Peninsula. My
experience and knowledge of engineering
solutions will be helpful in a council that has
many challenges with land and water. I will work
hard to resolve local environmental issues.
Government changes to environmental rules
make ECAN accept more industrial dairy
farming activity. This will bring problems for
water quality in our lakes, rivers, and local fresh
water effecting health and recreational activities.
With the dairy cow numbers in Selwyn district
approaching 180,000 this is a real concern
considering the amount of effluent produced.
This needs to be resolved or spend hundreds
of millions of ratepayers money in future water
improvement projects.
Continually melting glaciers and increased
rainfall will necessitate increased flood
prevention measures and planning. I will keep
continual research and development of effective
prevention’s against future climate change
damage.
Waste disposal treatment and our use of
throw away items means waste volumes are
increasing. Increased volumes and the methods
for containing them will be an increasing cost for
ratepayers so we need good design that works
and lasts.
Public transport is important to any modern
society and I will work to keep a good and
cost effective public system. I want to see a
passenger rail system using existing tracks for
commuting in Christchurch and Canterbury.

raises the bar
for small SUVs
A recent facelift has given
the Mercedes-Benz GLA – the
smallest member of the brand’s
SUV family – a timely mid-life
boost.
Despite being almost four
years into its model cycle, the
GLA still stacks up strongly
against newer rivals.
The original GLA, launched
nearly a decade ago, was
essentially an A-Class hatch
cleverly reimagined as an SUV.
This latest version refines
that formula further, now
offering Mercedes’ respected
4MATIC all-wheel-drive on
selected models.
It’s well suited to ski-field
access roads or the gravel

providing effortless low-speed

Paired with a slick 8-speed

​The test car was impeccably
finished, with cabin detailing
as good as I have seen in a
compact luxury urban SUV
hatch.
Space, however, is snug –
both for rear passengers and
luggage.
The MBUX infotainment
system is a standout, offering
intuitive voice control, Apple
CarPlay, Android Auto, sat nav,
and wireless charging without
fuss.
Most safety bases and
more are covered. These
include rain-sensing wipers,
active parking assist with
“Parktronic”, blind spot and
active lane assist, traffic sign
assist, plus adaptive high beam
assist. This makes night driving
easy by automatically dipping
the vehicles headlights for
approaching traffic.
Dynamic Select offers
a raft of options to easily
modify the vehicle’s driving
characteristics.
At the touch of a button a
range of suspension settings
are available.
There is comfort mode for
a more cushioned ride and at
the other end of the scale, sport
mode offers a firmer damper
set-up, to keep the vehicle
pinned even more securely to
demanding and twisty roads.
Ride quality proved hard
to fault, although it wasn’t
through lack of trying on my
part.
The test car faced almost
everything from smooth sealed
highways, to poorer rural
gravel roads. Care was needed
over the latter as the GLA35
has surprisingly limited ground
clearance.
This is a potential issue
on roads where gravel had
mounded up down the middle
of them. With a bit of judicious
driving, I managed to avoid the
underbody gravel rash these
surfaces willingly dish out.
Exceptional grip and traction
collectively delivered by the
AWD and suspension, saw a
vehicle made in Germany feel
right at home a world away on
our roads.
Overall, the updated GLA
feels sharper, smarter, and
more refined – a compact
luxury SUV that continues to
punch above its weight.
