Retirement village resident
Jean Sparrow has pushed back
against claims she and other
residents broke alcohol rules,
sparking a ban in the village.
Last week The Star and other
media reported the findings
of the dispute taken to the
Retirement Commission in
which the group of residents
challenged Condell Retirement
Village’s accusations.
The residents said the
Bryndwr village’s management
falsely accused them of drinking
alcohol in the barbecue area on
Christmas Day 2023, despite the
area being alcohol-free.
But Sparrow says there is a
major flaw in the case – they
were not drinking.

Cop with links to Jaz family has charges dismissed

A Christchurch police officer
who was charged with
accessing the police national
intelligence database to
allegedly “fix a problem” for the
family of Mama Hooch rapists
Danny and Roberto Jaz 10
years ago has had the charges
dismissed.
The officer’s lawyer told a
court the entire prosecution
was “misconceived”, and took
aim at a police job sheet saying
“a teenage Nancy Drew could've
done a better job”.
The officer was charged in
June 2024 on two charges of
directly accessing a computer
system, namely the National
Intelligence Application (NIA)
and thereby dishonestly and
without claim of right, obtained
a benefit.
The officer, who has permanent
name suppression, also
had his occupation suppressed
until Friday when the charges
were dismissed by Judge Noel
Sainsbury in the district court.
In a statement to RNZ, the
man’s lawyer Kerry Cook said:
“This entire saga has been devastating
and stressful for my
client.”
He said the officer had always
maintained his innocence, and
was pleased “to ultimately hear
the prosecution acknowledge it
could not prove the case against
him”.
“However, he believes that
acknowledgement came far
too late and was secured only
through the determined work
of his team, including the Police
Association (police officers’
union).”
He said the officer’s “minimal
messaging” with the Jaz family
was prior to any complaints
and prior to them being
investigated, or charged.

Dark Destroyer returning for charity quiz tour
Professional quizzer Shaun
Wallace, know as “The Dark
Destroyer” on The Chase, is
returning to Christchurch
in November as part of a
fundraising quiz tour of New
Zealand.
The tour, hosted in partnership
with Cure Kids and corporate
quiz provider Believe It Or Not,
will feature a series of Cure
Kids Quiz Nights, with all profits
donated to the charity.
Eight quizzes will be held in
locations including Christchurch,
Invercargill, Wairarapa, Mount
Maunganui and Pukekohe.

now apply to all shared common
areas.
Sparrow, her now late husband
John, and three other residents
were among those accused.
While the group was not
named in management’s emails,
Sparrow said it was obvious to
other residents who the email
was referring to.
Disputes panellist David
Carden upheld the actions of village
management, but also said
a solution “may have been able
to be found well before the parties
became as polarised as they
had”.
Carden said the decision
was not based around
whether alcohol consumption
actually occurred, and as the
management emails did not
identify the residents, there
was no basis to find they were
directly implicated.
Sparrow said she was unhappy
with the decision and the way
the situation had been handled
by management.
“We’re just absolutely
flabbergasted and dismayed
by all of this because we hadn’t
been drinking,” she said.
Wallace has been a regular
visitor to our shores in recent
years.
“New Zealand is one of my
favourite places on earth, this
will be my fifth trip in the past
six years – I cannot wait,” he
said.
“I love Kiwis, they are very
good quizzers, and have always
made me feel welcome, and
Cure Kids is a charity straight
from my heart too.”

loosened but the village’s
‘happy hour’ remains cancelled.
“All of us residents should be
allowed to drink what we like
events, said the charity is
thrilled to partner with Wallace
and Believe It Or Not.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to
raise vital funds for child health
research, while connecting
with so many of our wonderful
supporters right across the
country.”
While here, Wallace plans to
see the sights, drop in on the
occasional pub quiz, and meet
as many fans as possible.

One of the village’s directors,
Paul McCormack, said he was
“very happy” with the decision.
“We’re happy with the way
we have conducted ourselves
throughout this whole process.”
Responding to the group’s
claim they did not drink alcohol
on the day in question, McCormack
said “that’s up to them”.
The dispute process has cost
$20,000, of which the residents
have been ordered to pay
$2100.

mean older New Zealanders are

The association sent a letter to
Associate Justice Minister Nicole
McKee last week pushing for a
retirement village exemption
to current liquor licensing
laws, giving the right to serve
or permit modest amounts of
alcohol in shared spaces without
a commercial licence.

First step in private
hospital expansion
Forté Health has broken ground
on its expansion project, holding
a blessing ceremony with mana
whenua on Monday. The $60
million facility is being built next to
Forté Health on Kilmore St and is
expected to be completed by the
end of 2027. It will connect to the
existing hospital and include four
more operating theatres.
First godwits spotted
The godwits are back. The first 250
were spotted on the estuary earlier
this week, with about 1500 more
to come. The birds fly non-stop for
12,000km from Alaska, further than
any other bird. Avon-Heathcote

Person falls into rubbish pit
Firefighters rescued a person
who fell into a pit at a rubbish
transfer station. A rescue crew
was dispatched to Bromley just
after 2pm on Sunday, and found
a person in the transfer station’s

White supremacist Philip Arps
is making a bid for the city’s
mayoralty.
Arps gained notoriety for
sharing the livestream video of
the March 2019 mosque a tacks
filmed by the te rorist Brenton
Ta rant who murdered 51
people at Al Noor Mosque and
Linw od Islamic Centre.
He shared
the video with
30 people and
asked a friend to
modify the video
by editing in
cro s-hairs and
a ‘ki l-count’.
When
interviewed
by police he Philip Arps
described the
video as “awesome”.
Arps was charged with
distributing an objectionable
publication. He pleaded guilty
and was sentenced to 21
months prison in June, 2019.
At one of his court a pearances,
Arps distributed
holocaust denial material to
journalists and the public.
He was released on bail in
January, 2020 but sent back to
prison for four months in April,
2023 due to a range of breaches
to release conditions.
Abou two w eks before
he was sent back to prison,
Arps threatened his ex-wife’s
partner.

Officer’s alleged relationship with Jaz

messages sent in his personal
capacity from a personal phone.
He maintains they have been
misinterpreted, misconstrued
and stripped of their context by
the poor investigation. Looking
back, my client is embarrassed,
and regrets having sent those
messages.”
Judge Sainsbury held a hearing
last Thursday to hear an
application by Cook to dismiss
the charges.
At the hearing, Judge Sainsbury
laid out the background to
the case in relation to a charge
dated July 8, 2015.
Police alleged the officer
accessed NIA in relation to the
owner of a vehicle and then
passed on the information as
to the owner of vehicle, cellphone
number and address to
Michael Jaz. Jaz is the father of
convicted rapists Danny and
Roberto Jaz. The police investigation
into the Jaz brothers did
not begin until 2018.
“These charges are the collateral
result of an investigation
into sexual offending by members
of the Jaz family associated
with a bar and restaurant on
Colombo St,” Judge Sainsbury
said.
“What the prosecution allege
is that the defendant developed
what might be broadly
and more neutrally described
as an inappropriate or unfortunate
relationship with the Jaz
family.”
He referred to the officer
being involved in text messages
and group chats with members
of the family from at least
August 2014.
“The conversations involve
sexualised discussions concerning
women, they are not
of themselves illegal, but it certainly
makes for unfortunate,
unpleasant reading when it
involves a police officer in the
light of what subsequently is
known about members of the
Jaz family in terms of comparatively
recent convictions for
offending from 2015 onwards.”
Judge Sainsbury said it
appeared the police officer was
approached by Michael Jaz,
after either he or an associate
of his had an accident one night
whereby a car had crashed into
a parked vehicle on Salisbury
St.
“The officer then made
inquiries about that, as such
on the face of there’s nothing
wrong with that.”
However, the Crown alleged
the officer was making the
inquiries on behalf of the Jaz
family not for a legitimate
police purpose but to “somehow
fix a problem”.
“That he has obtained this
information as to the owner of
a car that was damaged, passed
it on to Michael Jaz, presumably
this is for the purpose of
Michael Jaz being able to put
things right with the owner
and avoid any questions being
asked that might lead to criminal
charges.”
The police “somewhat

in 2023 of drugging and violating more
than 20 women at the bar Mama Hooch
and neighbouring restaurant Venuti
between 2015 and 2018.

belatedly” attempted to contact
the owner of the vehicle,
who now lived in Australia,
and she was unable to provide
any information to them about
knowing the defendant.
Judge Sainsbury pointed out
the woman was only asked
whether she remembered the
officer’s name.
“It doesn't seem she was
asked about her car being
damaged, if a police officer
approached her about that or
any other information about
the incident.”
The defence engaged a
private investigator who contacted
the owner of the car. In
April, the private investigator
received an email response
from the woman who confirmed
she gave consent to the
police officer to provide her
details.
The private investigator then
went and saw the woman and
took a statement from her in
August. She confirmed her car
had been crashed into and that
she was spoken to by a police
officer and gave him consent
to give her details to the other
party. She was told the other
party wanted her details for
insurance purposes which she
was happy with as she was
not insured. The other party's
insurance company paid out for
the damage.
She also said she was called
by police in 2024 who said her
name had come up as someone
checked by police in their
internal system, she was given
names but no context, Judge
Sainsbury said.
“She says she could not recall
anything about that and called
it a very strange call.”
The defence position was that
the defendant was approached
by someone he knew about
an accident and was asked to
investigate.
He then went to Salisbury
St and saw the car, and made
an inquiry in NIA to get the
owner's details. He then spoke
to the owner of the car and got
their permission to pass on her
details.
“Accordingly the inquiries
made were legitimate for police
purposes.”

did cause some suspicion and
concern.
“But suspicion and concern is
not an evidential basis applying
to guilt.”
The judge said it appeared to
him that if it was a legitimate
inquiry there would be a record
of it.
“It seems that also occurred
to defence counsel who have
made vigorous and repeated
attempts to get information
from the police.
“The response I have to say
seems to have been somewhat
underwhelming.”
Through disclosure, Cook was
provided with a transaction log
from police relating to the damaged
vehicle. The log showed
queries made by the officer that
were made on the day in question
and were recorded as a
traffic incident.
“What that means is that
on what I have in front of me
there is evidence of a crash
being reported to the defendant,
he has made inquiries
about that, he has accessed
NIA in an appropriate way, he
has contacted the owner of the
damaged vehicle and arrangements
for the damage to be
put right without matter taken
further.
“Put in that light it is difficult
to see how there is a case
that a properly directed jury
could reasonably convict the
defendant.”
The only issue the judge had
was that police wanted an
adjournment to assure themselves
the woman had not been
placed under any pressure in
making her statement.
Police had made attempts to
speak to the woman but had not
been able to since they were
informed of the statement last
week.
Crown prosecutor Cameron
Stuart said if the judge was not
minded to adjourn the hearing
then the Crown's position was
they could not oppose the application
to dismiss the charges.
Cook said police had plenty
of time to contact her given the
charges were laid in June last
year.
He said it was not until 15
October last year after several
requests that he received
through disclosure the vehicle
query log and transaction log
that backed up the defence's
case.
The disclosure also revealed
the officer in charge of the
case Detective Senior Sergeant
Jason Abbott did not search
the registration of the car that
was damaged until 5 September,
2024, after the charges
were laid. He then searched it
again on 24 September and 15
October.
On receiving the logs Cook
asked the Crown to review
the case, and said the prosecution
was “weak” and
“misconceived”.
In July 2025 following further
requests for disclosure Cook
received what he described as
the “forensic low point of the
prosecution”, a job sheet in
relation to the woman whose
car was queried.
Cook provided a copy of the
jobsheet to Judge Sainsbury.
“Now you’ll see it’s got the
date and time it started as 20
June 2024 – then your honour
would've looked down the bottom
and seen it wasn’t created
until the 30th of June 2025,”
Cook said.
“A teenage Nancy Drew
could've done a better job in
relation to that job sheet.”
He said it was “woeful, negligent,
late disclosure”.
Cook told Judge Sainsbury the
time had come for the case to
come to an end.
“These basic investigations
should've been done. It became
apparent when we got involved.
It’s obvious where he was. It’s
obvious what happened. It
needs to end and it should end
now.”
Judge Sainsbury gave the
Crown until Friday morning last
week to speak with the woman.
On Friday, the Crown confirmed
they had spoken to her
and she confirmed her statement
was correct and she had
not given it under any duress.
Judge Sainsbury then granted
the application to dismiss the
charges and granted permanent
name suppression for the
officer.

Arrest made over Llew
Summers sculpture theft

Police have made an arrest over
the theft of a 2.2 tonne Llew
Summers sculpture outside Mt
Pleasant Community Centre.
The 2.2m long sculpture
called Flight was taken overnight
on June 4.
A breakthrough in the case
came when pieces of scrap
metal from the stolen sculpture
were discovered at a scrap
metal yard.
The large sculpture depicted a
soaring bird above the sea.
It was purchased by the centre
last year for $95,000, after

rapidly scanning large areas of
bush or alpine terrain to find
missing people is now part of
Canterbury search and rescue
crew equipment.
The RECCO SAR helicopter
detector, developed in Sweden,
is suspended beneath a helicopter
as a sling load. It detects
small reflectors that can be integrated
into jackets, backpacks
or other gear.
The reflectors require no batteries
or activation and can be
two years of fundraising from
the community, to honour
Summers.
Flight was Summers’ final
work before he died in 2019. His
funeral was held at the centre.
Said centre president Derek
McMcCullough: “Absolutely
elated, but it doesn’t change the
fact it is gone.”

city councillors as the local
body elections loom.

in an initial voice vote.
But McLellan and Donovan
say the vote last week has
nothing to do with the elections.

others costs such as temporary
traffic management.

So you can only deduce that

period,” said Henstock.
The increasing number of
raised platforms and speed
humps throughout the city
has become a divisive election
issue, with right-leaning city
councillors and candidates
often criticising their leftleaning
counterparts for
supporting them.
Only mayoral candidate and
Heathcote Ward city councillor
Sara Templeton voted to keep
the proposed raised platform
last week while all other city
councillors and Mayor Phil
Mauger agreed to remove it
from the design.
McLellan acknowledged
changing his position on the
raised platform
during the
debate, but
said it was
not to do with
his election
campaign.
“I changed
my mind

big deal and it

to have a lot
of community
support,” he
said.
Donovan said Celeste Donovan

change just because it’s election
time”.
“I keep an open mind right
until the last moment,” she said.

Harewood Ward city
councillor Aaron Keown has
accused all left-leaning city
councillors of voting against the
platform only because they do
not want to lose votes.
“The rats are jumping from
the ship. I think they realised
the writing was on the wall and
I’ll put up a (Facebook) post
saying who voted each way.”
McLellan said it was “cynical”
for other city councillors to
criticise him for changing his
mind during the debate.
“We need to able to go into a
debate with an open mind and
change if necessary. That’s what
happened here.”

Gym charged
over fees
The country’s biggest gym chain,
City Fitness, is facing charges
under the Fair Trading Act.
The chain has six gyms in
Christchurch.
The Commerce Commission
said it had filed 16 charges
alleging City Fitness’ advertised
membership fees were misleading
because they did not include
a compulsory 3% fee.
The commission said the
gyms labelled it a transaction
fee, but it was not related to the
cost of processing transactions.
The charges relate to a period
between December 21, 2023 and
April 30 this year.
Said commission competition,
fair trading and credit general
manager Vanessa Horne: “After
City Fitness introduced the compulsory
3% fee, it continued
advertising a weekly price that
did not include this fee, effectively
advertising a price that
people couldn’t get. City Fitness
also positioned itself as offering
one of the cheapest membership
options, at $6.99 per week.
Although after adding on the
compulsory fee, this was not
always the case.”
CityFitness chief operating
officer Doug Hatten said after
being made aware the fee was
potentially misleading the gym
removed it and implemented a
new inclusive price from May 1,
2025. He said they would review
the commission’s findings and
apologised to anyone who may
have been confused by the

Conquering great walks at 67
Six months ago, Kathy watched
her walking group head off
without her. Today, the 67-yearold
retiree leads the pack.
“I thought my serious tramping
days were over,” she admits. “My
knees were really complaining
if I did anything with elevation

Coastal a battle
of momentum
versus change
Key ward election races will shape the direction of the next city council.
Reporter Dylan Smits is speaking with candidates standing in the most
competitive wards. This week, the much-discussed Coastal Ward
The race to be elected as
the next Coastal Ward city
councillor has captured
significant public attention.
Former city councillor and
broadcaster James Daniels’
decision to stand in the ward
and then abruptly pull out of
the election appeared to turn
the three-way race into a twoway
contest between incumbent
Celeste Donovan and community
board member Jo Zervos.
That changed again with the
late entry of health consultant
Taraia Brown, making it a
three-way race once more.
Donovan says she is standing
for re-election because, “Coastal
has momentum, but the job
isn’t done.”
She highlights projects she
helped secure funding for,
including $38.5 million for the
Pages Rd bridge, $18m for the
New Brighton Mall upgrade,
and reinstated chlorine-free
water at the Keyes Rd community
tap.
Donovan is reluctant to put
a label on her political views
and stands as an independent,
however she has a left-leaning
voting record and often
aligns with The People’s Choice
councillors.
Zervos, who identifies as
centre-right politically, says her
campaign plan was “turned
upside-down” when Daniels
decided to withdraw.
She felt called to stand for
city council due to more party
politics at her community board
this term since left-leaning

“There’s only so much you
can do on a community board
and I can see that same kind of
politics happening around the
council table,” Zervos said.
Although she emphasises her
independence, Zervos says she
would often be “one more vote”
for the centre-right voting bloc

work to be done,” she said.
She also supports the city
council considering some type of
rates cap.
Brown is new to local politics.
She returned to New Zealand in
2021 after nearly 25 years in Australia
working in the Victorian
state public service.
Now based in New Brighton
after moving from Wellington,
she works as a health and
safety consultant for Health New
Zealand.
“I’m all about advocating for
the health and well-being of
residents. People want to see
leaders that understand that
housing, jobs, climate change,
education and healthcare are all
connected.”
A former Labour Party member,
Brown wants to be part of
bringing more gender and ethnic
diversity to the council table.
The Coastal Ward stretches
from Brooklands and Spencerville
in the north to Southshore
in the south, and includes New
Brighton and Parklands.
Donovan was first elected to
the ward seat in 2021 after a byelection
brought about by Daniels
resigning to host Newstalk ZB
afternoons with Simon Barnett.
She beat the next highest
polling candidate, current Environment
Canterbury councillor
David East, by 472 votes (1654 to
1182).
In the 2022 election, Donovan
was re-elected with a 578 vote
margin against former Coastal-
Burwood Community Board
chair Kim Money (4182 to 3604).
On asset sales Donovan
opposes selling the city’s key
companies – Lyttelton Port
Company, Christchurch Airport
and power company Orion.
Brown said she “leans against”
asset sales out but would not rule
the prospect out entirely.
Zervos said the council should
retain majority ownership
of its assets but believes any
partial sale options should be
investigated, with the community
consulted on any proposals.

Hat-trick hero leads Tech
to bittersweet cup win

Scoring a hat-trick in the English Cup
final was a special way to cap off a tough
season for Cashmere Technical’s Lyle
Matthysen.
The winger was awarded the Steve
Sumner Medal for player of the match
after leading Tech’s 5-1 win over Nomads
United on Sunday, securing the club’s
eighth cup title.
Matthysen and his teammates knew it
would be their last game of the season,
after Christchurch United’s 4-0 victory
over Nelson Suburbs on Saturday lifted
them to second place and secured the
final National League spot ahead of
Tech.
“We prepared for the worst and just
made sure that we turned up to the
final,” he said.
“It was a difficult week to have that
in our minds, but a good way to end the
season.”
Winning the trophy for the first time
since 2022 carried extra meaning.
“It’s something we definitely cherish,
and we always strive to get silverware
back at the club,” he said.
United captain Travis Graham said
National League qualification was a big
boost for his side, and he was eager for
the chance to avenge their Chatham Cup
quarter-final loss to Auckland United.
“We’ve learned our lessons and know
what it takes to play at a better level. The
guys are really keen to be on the better
side against them this time,” Graham
said.
United will face Auckland in their first
league game in two weeks.
Meanwhile, second-tier Halswell
United begin their push for promotion to
next season’s Southern League.
They will play FC Nelson over two legs,

Head coach Ollie Hawkins said the
club was “buzzing” with excitement.
“Halswell is a huge footballing community.
You walk around, you go to the
supermarket next door, and everyone
talks about football here,” he said.
“It would be huge for our club.”
Halswell last played in the top-tier
Mainland Premier League in 2021 – the
forerunner to the Southern League – but
have been stuck in the second division
since.
Hawkins said he felt the club belonged
in the top division.
“It’s got accolades. In 2005 it had a
Chatham Cup run that made it to the
semi-final, where they hosted it here at
the Nest (Halswell Domain).
“If you come into our club rooms, you
see the accolades from the previous
years. It (Halswell) has won the premiership,
it has won the English Cup, that’s
where it should be, and that’s what we
tell our players.”
Halswell meets FC Nelson at home
on Saturday with the second leg to be
played in Nelson next weekend.
Seven Canterbury school and club rugby players have been picked for three national under 18
teams to take part in this year’s pathway programme. St Thomas wing Lautasi Etuale is the sole
selection in the New Zealand Schools team, while Christchurch Boys’ High’s Dylan Giles and St
Thomas’ Neihana Mata’afa are in the New Zealand Māori side. Club players Josh Findlay (HSOB),
PJ Palamo (Linwood), Charlie Sullivan (Sydenham) and Louie Treacy (Lincoln University) are
still under 18-eligible, and have been picked in a New Zealand Barbarians side. The teams and a

Watt to make
Davis Cup
debut in tie
with Georgia

Elmwood’s James Watt will
make his Davis Cup debut for
New Zealand this weekend in
the World Group II tie against
Georgia in Palmerston North.
The 25-year-old was named
in the national squad alongside
regular doubles partner Finn
Reynolds, as well as Ajeet Rai,
Jack Loutit and Isaac Beecroft.
New Zealand is ranked 48th in
the world, with Georgia 57th.
“I’m super excited to represent
New Zealand for the first
time,” Watt said.
“It has been a dream of mine
to be selected. Now it’s my time
and it’s a pretty cool feeling.”
Victory will see New Zealand
play in the World Group I playoffs
in February.
Watt has been climbing the
ATP Challenger Tour rankings in
recent months. He and Reynolds
reached finals in Mexico and the
Czech Republic in April and May,
before three titles wins in June
and July.
“We had great chemistry from
the moment we started playing
together. We will be really
pumped this weekend,” Watt
said.
His world doubles ranking has
risen from 318 to 134 over the
past year, while he is also ranked
581 in singles.
History beckons for Shirley basketballers

Shirley Boys’ High School has
already made basketball history
this year – and they are not
done yet.
The Spartans claimed their
first-ever South Island championship
in Nelson, adding to
their third Thompson Trophy
title, and first since 2010,
for winning the Canterbury
competition.
Now the team is eyeing further
success at the national
secondary schools championships
in Palmerston North,
starting on Septemer 22.
Head coach Fraser Costley
said the goal is to better the
school’s previous best national
finish of ninth, achieved in
2010.
“Hopefully things can go our
way in pool play and we can get
through to that top eight. Then
take that step further this year,”
he said.
Most of Shirley’s current
squad have played under Costley
since year 9, including his
son Kobe, not named after the
late NBA player Kobe Bryant.
“We’ve just been building
year-on-year and just steadily
improving,” Costley said.
“We’re probably five years
deep in terms of work and
development to get us to this
point, and I think we’re just getting
the results now as a result
of that work.”

final with a 77-73 win over
Nelson.
“We’ve managed to prove to
ourselves that we can foot it
with the best, but also battle and
find a way to win close games,”
Costley said.
“It definitely gives you that
confidence when you’re in a tight
game, you’ve been there before,
you know you’ve done it before.”
It is not just the senior side
enjoying success. Shirley’s junior
team won their South Island
tournament, after also winning
the year 9/10 Grocott Trophy
competition for Canterbury
schools.
It is only the second time a
school has won both South Island
titles in the same year, after
Otago Boys’ High achieved the
feat in 2013.
Junior coach James Lissaman
said the school is experiencing a
rare “golden generation”.
“You’ve got the perfect storm
with the amount of talent at
senior and junior level being in
the same calendar year, it’s pretty
amazing,” he said.
Almost all of the junior team
played as year 9s in the same
tournament last year, giving
them valuable experience as
year 10s this season.
The team went unbeaten on
their way to the title.
“It’s honestly a season that’s
probably not likely to happen for
any of them ever again,” Lissaman
said, “where you just win
every single game you’re in as a

White supremacist Philip Arps
is making a bid for the city’s
mayoralty.
Arps gained notoriety for
sharing the livestream video of
the March 2019 mosque attacks
filmed by the te rorist Brenton
Ta rant who murdered 51
people at Al N or Mosque and
Linw od Islamic Centre.
He shared
the video with
30 people and
asked a friend to
modify the video
by editing in
cro s-hairs and
a ‘ki l-count’.
When
interviewed
by police he Philip Arps
described the
video as “awesome”.
Arps was charged with
distributing an objectionable
publication. He pleaded guilty
and was sentenced to 21
months prison in June, 2019.
At one of his court a pearances,
Arps distributed
holocaust denial material to
journalists and the public.
He was released on bail in
January, 2020 but sent back to
prison for four months in April,
2023 due to a range of breaches
to release conditions.
Abou two w eks before
he was sent back to prison,
Arps threatened his ex-wife’s
partner.

charge into EV market
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
Innovative and bold, the first-generation
Nissan Leaf hatch launched in 2010
was a groundbreaking electric vehicle,
kick-starting the journey toward the
mass-produced EVs we see today.
This pioneering model offered
affordable electric motoring for everyday
drivers, though in those early days few
were ready to take the plunge.
Over time, barriers fell as buyers
recognised the Leaf’s low running costs
and zero emissions.
The Leaf gave Nissan strong
momentum and solid sales for its first
five or six years, but as Korean and
Chinese makers entered the EV market,
its early success began to fade.
Nissan has since faced struggles on
several fronts, though it is now in a
rebuilding phase.
One of its first new-generation
offerings is the Ariya, built on the same
platform as the Renault Mégane E-Tech,
both products of the Renault–Nissan–
Mitsubishi Alliance.
The Ariya’s introduction has been an
“on again, off again” story.
Nissan NZ was initially keen to launch,
but paused after the government
scrapped the clean car rebate in early
2024, followed three months later by the
introduction of road user charges for
EVs.
Those changes caused a seismic
shift in the market. EV sales slumped,
and manufacturers cut prices to clear
stockpiles.
Now, with signs of recovery, Nissan
judged it the right time to bring in the
Ariya and ride a possible revival wave.
Three versions are on offer: the entrylevel
Engage at $59,990, the high-spec
Advance for an extra $10k, and the
flagship Evolve, tested here, at $89,990. All
are introductory prices.
Competition is fierce, with the Ariya
going up against heavyweights like the Kia
EV5 and EV9, Tesla, and a raft of Chinese
challengers led by BYD.
Nissan claims a range of 497km, though
in mixed urban and open-road use, 350km
is more realistic – less again over hilly
terrain with a full load of passengers and
luggage.
Nissan positions the Ariya as a premium
model, brimming with clever touches that
set it apart.
Instead of a conventional grille, it carries
a body shield that houses equipment for
its suite of driver and passenger safety
systems.
Our test model runs an 87kWh battery
and dual motors producing 290kW and a

hefty 600Nm of torque. That’s more than
enough to push this large SUV along with
surprising urgency while keeping the
cabin hushed.
The 0-100km/h sprint takes around five
seconds, delivered with the instantaneous
surge only EVs can provide. Against this,
most combustion engines feel sluggish.
A single-speed automatic, overseen by
the car’s computer, keeps things simple,
though long-term durability will be tested
as these vehicles age.
Among the highlights is a superb brake
energy recovery system. Braking energy is
efficiently captured and stored back in the
battery. Steering-wheel paddles allow the
driver to adjust the level of regeneration,
making it easy to tailor the experience – a
genuinely engaging feature.
Inside, the Ariya’s cabin feels both
futuristic and practical. It’s one of the
most visually striking interiors in its class,
balancing style with usability.
A generous 466-litre boot, plus excellent
rear head and legroom, will please
families.
Controls and instruments are clearly
laid out, while a large central touchscreen,
supported by a multifunction steering
wheel, simplifies operation. Innovations
abound, from the ultra-comfortable
zero-gravity seats to the electronically
adjustable centre console.
On the road, ride comfort and handling
aren’t class-leading but come close.
Independent front and rear suspension
and Nissan’s e-Force AWD system, also
seen in the X-Trail e-Power, provide strong
underpinnings.
Like most large EVs, the Ariya’s battery
pack sits in the floor, lowering the
centre of gravity and giving good weight
distribution. This translates into stability
and balance, especially noticeable in
quicker cornering.
Across long test drives on urban streets
and rural highways, the Ariya impressed
with its cushioned ride, accurate
steering, and steady handling, even
during higher tempo driving over tough,
undulating terrain.
