From the operating room to the

writing desk, one man’s extraordinary

journey through love, loss, and life’s

unexpected turns.

When Dr. Albert H. Yurvati rises before dawn,

it’s not to scrub in for a surgery call, it’s to begin

another chapter in a story that is still unfolding.

By 6:00 a.m., the emeritus professor at the

University of North Texas Health Science Center’s

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is already

in his office. By noon, he’s back home in Texas,

caring for his beloved wife, Sharon, who suffered

a life-altering thrombotic stroke.

Once, his days revolved around high-stakes

cardiothoracic operations, where split-second

decisions meant the difference between life

and death. Today, the stakes remain just as high.

Only now, they are measured in tender acts of

caregiving, moments of resilience, and the words

he commits to paper.

A CALLING BEYOND

THE SCALPEL

Dr. Yurvati’s professional life reads like a testament

to discipline and excellence. Raised in Allentown,

Pennsylvania, he served in the U.S. Army, where he

met Sharon, his soulmate and steadfast partner.

After medical school, he completed residencies in

both general and cardiothoracic surgery, eventually

earning national and international recognition for his

surgical skill and academic contributions.

But in 2020, life abruptly changed course. Diagnosed

with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the

bone marrow, he suddenly found himself navigating

the unfamiliar role of patient, all while still serving

as Sharon’s caregiver. Nights filled with high-dose

steroid treatments left him wired and restless.

Instead of counting the hours, he used them to write.

INSPIRED BY LOVE,

SHAPED BY FATE

The spark to become an author came from

Sharon, who had written four books of her own.

Her encouragement, coupled with his desire

to chronicle his transitions of being a healer to

caregiver, from caregiver to patient, pushed him

to put pen to paper. What began as a personal

exercise evolved into a trilogy of memoirs infused

with humor, history, and humanity.

His debut book, Wet My Hands, opens with him

at the pinnacle of his surgical career, only to have

fate intervene in the form of Sharon’s stroke and

his own cancer diagnosis. The title, drawn from

a command often heard in the operating room,

symbolizes technical precision and attentive care:

traits he’s carried through every role in his life.

The narrative moves seamlessly between medical

milestones and deeply personal moments,

painting a portrait of perseverance in the face of

uncertainty.

The second book, This to Me, is a natural continuation.

Here, Dr. Yurvati reflects more deeply on the influence of

the mythical Fates or the spinners of life’s threads, while

chronicling both professional triumphs and intimate

struggles. It is a meditation on endurance, exploring how

the intersections of love, illness, and purpose shape the

human spirit.

Completing the trilogy, 30 Degrees on Bypass expands

on the themes introduced in his earlier works. Blending

surgical history, personal anecdotes, and moments

of humor, the book underscores the balance between

science and humanity. It’s a reminder that even in the

most clinical environments, compassion remains an

essential instrument.

And there is more to come. His fourth book, Bride and

Blades: How to Survive a Surgical Marriage, is finished

and awaiting its next steps. Designed as a guide to

navigating the unique challenges of life with a surgeon,

it reflects the same honesty and insight found in his

memoirs.

A Life Still Being Written

From the high-stakes arena of the operating room to

the steady strength of caregiving, from the honors of

academia to the unguarded truths of memoir, Dr. Albert H.

Yurvati’s life resists being told as a single story. It is a tale

of constant reinvention, of refusing to let fate choose the

final page, and of seeking meaning in every chapter, no

matter how it opens.

All three books have Spanish editions, making them

accessible to a broader audience. This allows more readers

to connect with Dr. Yurvati’s story.

“Live each day to the fullest,” he says. And with each

sunrise, he does exactly that, writing for himself and

for anyone who needs to remember that even when life

severs the thread, there is always a way to pick it up and

begin weaving again.

Resilience at the Core

Ask Dr. Yurvati about the hardest role he’s ever had, and

he doesn’t hesitate: cardiothoracic surgeon. “The trust

patients give you—it’s immense,” he explains. Yet, the

roles life thrust upon him later, as caregiver to Sharon and

as a patient battling cancer, have challenged him in ways

that transformed his understanding of love and strength.

The chapter detailing Sharon’s stroke was the most

difficult for him to write. “I thought I was going to lose

her,” he admits. But rather than breaking them, the ordeal

strengthened their bond. It taught them to live fully in

each moment, a lesson he believes readers need now

more than ever. “Never give up. Overcome the barriers,”

he urges.

Back in the Spotlight

This September, Dr. Yurvati returns to the Manila

International Book Fair as the cover feature of The

Reading Glass Magazine. The experience, he says, is filled

with anticipation. “I am hoping that readers will buy the

books and enjoy my stories,” he shares.
