HEAD COACH

SERGEJ

JAKIROVIĆ

A warm welcome to all our supporters for our Sky Bet

Championship match against Southampton.

The last-minute equaliser at Swansea City was

no less than we deserved and a reward for our

perseverance and never-say-die spirit. Not

for the first time this season, it was a crazy

game! Our second-half performance was an

improvement on the first, with more bravery on

the ball and self-confidence in our play.

We created some good chances but, like at

Bristol City, found their goalkeeper in outstanding

form. Their second goal came from a counterattack,

but the players refused to surrender. Our

substitutes made a big impact, and we showed

strong mentality and real character to keep

pushing and score that goal right at the end. After

two disappointing results before the international

break, it was important to come away with

something – and we did not deserve to lose.

I am happy the transfer period is over and very

satisfied with our business. The signings of Darko

Gyabi and Amir Hadžiahmetović at the end of the

window have added depth to the midfield zone.

Both players were bright on debut at Swansea,

as was Enis Destan on his first appearance for

the club. We now have more options to change

the rhythm of a game and switch to a plan B if

needed. With all our signings, we must be patient

and give them time to settle and adapt, which

only comes from playing minutes.

A warm welcome to Southampton manager Will

Still, his staff, players and their supporters to

today’s game. Southampton have a squad full of

quality and are expecting to compete at the top

end of the division.

Preparation this week has been positive, and we

are excited to be back in front of our supporters.

The last-minute

equaliser at

Swansea City

was no less than

we deserved and

a reward for our

perseverance and

never-say-die spirit.

We owe you a performance after our last home

match against Blackburn Rovers. The feeling in the

stadium against Oxford United was incredible –

and we want to experience that again. We will be

doing everything we can to take the three points.

Up the Tigers!

The striker was on hand to

poke the ball home after Oli

McBurnie’s deflected shot fell

into his path. Despite suffering

a 4-2 loss at Ashton Gate, the

23-year-old was happy to get

on the scoresheet.

“It is massive for me. It has

been a while to get off the mark

and to score my first goal in

the Championship for the club

is amazing. I was obviously

disappointed about the result,

but it is something I will hope to

build on from,” said Joseph.

“It will do my confidence the

world of good as I know it has

been a long time coming. I am a

big believer of you get out what

you put in. I kept working hard

and doing the right things and it

came. It is about building on that

“All strikers have it in their career

“I feel that I am strong mentally.

right things and soon it will come.

It was an amazing feeling, but

we were disappointed with the

game. It is mixed emotions.”

Coming on at half-time in the

fixture at Ashton Gate, the striker

forced a number of good saves

from Bristol City goalkeeper

Radek Vítek. Also scoring in

pre-season in the 2-1 victory

against İstanbulspor, Joseph

spoke on how he will continue to

“I probably could have had a

Joseph on the Bristol City game.

“It is about putting yourself in

the right positions. It is about

perseverance and being in the

right positions to do the right

things.”

2025/26 SEASON SUMMARY:

Back in the Sky Bet Championship following

their relegation from the Premier League last

season, finishing bottom with just two wins,

Southampton have collected six points from

five league games played so far.

Will Still’s team played out a goalless draw with

their South Coast arch rivals Portsmouth at St

Mary’s in their last league match. Beginning the

season with a come-from-behind victory with

two late goals to win 2-1 at home to Wrexham,

the Saints drew 1-1 away at Ipswich Town before

suffering their only league defeat of the season at

home to Stoke City.

In their last away test, Southampton drew 2-2 at

Vicarage Road against Watford to end August,

with Cameron Archer and Ryan Manning scoring

for the Saints.

Meanwhile, the Saints have made their way into

the third round of the Carabao Cup. They saw off

Northampton Town and Norwich City in the two

previous rounds courtesy of respective 1-0 and

3-0 victories, setting up an away tie at Anfield

against Premier League Champions Liverpool on

Tuesday 23 September, kick-off: 8pm.

Meanwhile, Long is another experienced head

within the club’s goalkeeping ranks having

previously played for Sheffield United, the Tigers,

Millwall and Norwich City.

GAVIN BAZUNU

Defenders:

The Saints can potentially utilise Ryan Manning,

Jack Stephens, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Mads

Roerslev, Welington, Ronnie Edwards, Nathan

Wood, Joshua Quarshie and Elias Jelert within

their backline. Apart from Jelert, they’ve all

gained minutes in the league this season thus

far. Manning, Stephens and Harwood-Bellis

have racked up a combined total of four league

goals and Wood has contributed one assist.

Stephens has registered eight goals in 205

appearances throughout his time at St Mary’s

since his arrival from Plymouth Argyle in April

2011. As well as this, he’s had loan stints at clubs

including Swindon Town, Coventry City and AFC

Bournemouth.

Originally brought in on loan in July 2023,

Harwood-Bellis has amassed 89 appearances

and six goals as a Saints player. He came through

the youth ranks at Manchester City where made

eight senior appearances and secured one goal.

Harwood-Bellis made his senior international

debut and scored his first goal for England in

November 2024.

Midfielders:

In their midfield, the Saints can pick from Shea

Charles, Ryan Fraser, Flynn Downes, Finn Azaz,

Kuryu Matsuki, Léo Scienza, Caspar Jander, Joe

Aribo, Samuel Edozie and Moses Sesay. Charles,

Fraser, Downes, Azaz, Matsuki, Scienza and

Jander have all been utilised in league action

so far. Out of those, Fraser has racked up one

assist to his name.

Downes has amassed 72 appearances and three

goals for the Saints across both his initial loan

spell with them and subsequent permanent

switch from West Ham United. He represented

the Hammers 35 times and was part of their

squad which won the UEFA Conference League

in the 2022/23 campaign as he made nine

appearances in the competition. Prior to this,

Downes had spells at Ipswich Town and Swansea

City and he made his senior debut for Ipswich at

the age of 18 in August 2017.

Forwards:

The Saints have Adam Armstrong, Cameron

Archer, Jay Robinson, Ross Stewart, Damion

Downs and Tom Fellows as their forward options.

All of them have been deployed within the club’s

both have one league goal each to their names

while Downs has a tally of one assist.

Since his arrival from Blackburn Rovers in

August 2021, Armstrong has amassed 32 goals

in 148 appearances for the Saints. He played an

integral part in helping the club achieve their last

promotion to the Premier League in the 2023/24

season as he played every league game and

registered 21 goals and 13 assists.

Acquired from German side Cologne in the

summer, Downs racked up 42 appearances and

13 goals for his former club. He represented both

Germany and the US as a youth international and

has gone on to earn five senior caps for the latter.

WATCH

RYAN

MANNING

AGE: 29

POSITION: LEFT-BACK

CLASSIC CLASH

HULL CITY 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON

Sunday 6 November 2016 | KCOM Stadium | Premier League

Two goals in two minutes saw City come from

behind to defeat Southampton back in 2016.

Hull City: Marshall;

Elmohamady, Davies,

Dawson (C), Maguire

(Huddlestone 74’),

Clucas; Livermore,

Mason; Henriksen;

Hernández (Mbokani 9’),

Keane (Snodgrass 26’).

Handed the full-time managerial

reins in October 2016, this was

Mike Phelan’s fifth game as

City’s permanent head coach.

The Saints came into this game

on the back of a famous 2-1

win over Inter Milan in the UEFA

Europa League a few days earlier.

Things didn’t start well for City

as they fell behind after just

six minutes. The visitors were

awarded a penalty following

a challenge on Maya Yoshida

by Curtis Davies, and this was

subsequently dispatched by

Charlie Austin. Phelan’s misery

was compounded by the loss of

both strikers Abel Hernández and

Will Keane to respective injuries

which saw them replaced by

Dieumerci Mbokani and Robert

Snodgrass.

In the early stages of the second

half, the Saints almost doubled

their lead as Virgil van Dijk saw

his header crash off the bar. The

Tigers were back on level terms in

the 61st minute when Snodgrass

secured his fourth league goal

of the campaign having been

picked out by Sam Clucas’ cross.

Phelan’s side then took the lead

two minutes later as Michael

Dawson got on the end of a

Snodgrass free-kick delivery and

headed home to bag his first

league goal of the season.

Following this, the Saints

rallied as they looked to get

themselves back into the game.

City goalkeeper David Marshall

exhibited a terrific display as

he produced excellent saves to

deny both Austin and Yoshida

from equalising. This was

followed by some wonderful

defensive work by Dawson

and Clucas as they prevented

Austin and Jay Rodriguez from

threatening their goal.

THE BIG INTERVIEW

IVOR PANDUR

Ahead of making his 50th appearance for Hull City, Ivor Pandur reviewed

the current campaign, reflected on his learnings from last season

and spoke of the special ‘goalkeepers’ union’ in East Yorkshire.

The goalkeeper is set to make his 50th

appearance for Hull City this afternoon in a

spell that has presented several challenges,

which the Croatian has overcome to shine as

the Tigers’ number one.

Joining the club in the January transfer window

of 2024 from Eredivisie outfit Fortuna Sittard,

Pandur would have to wait until the following

summer to make his debut, becoming an everpresent

since that moment. He has picked up

several awards and many plaudits for his efforts,

keeping seven clean sheets across those 49

outings.

“It’s a proud feeling because this club has given

me the chance to play in the Championship and

There have been

some ups and

downs, but you

can see that we

have a good team.

Everything we do

in training gets us

together, and in the

group, we have some

good guys and great

personalities.

the fans have been outstanding with me since the

very first day – even when I wasn’t playing, I felt

their support,” said Pandur.

“Even on the street away from games, they’re

supportive and last season when we had bad

results, they stayed with us. I love the people and

I love the club, so it’s just a proud feeling to hit

such a milestone.”

Last season, the Croatian was crowned the

Supporters’ Player of the Year, honoured by

his teammates as the Players’ Player of the

Year and awarded Player of the Year for his

stellar performances in between the posts. The

25-year-old recorded a save percentage of

71.4% in an impressive first full season in English

football, and he hopes to continue his form into

this campaign.

“It was really tough because we lost a lot and a lot

of things happened which required us to adjust

quickly, like a change of managers, which always

can be tough,” continued Pandur, reflecting on

the season just gone.

“I am very happy that it ended the way it did,

with us staying in the league, because we fought

so hard until the end to achieve that, because it

wasn’t easy.

“It was a great experience, and I am proud of what

I managed to achieve, but I now want to focus on

helping the team as I did before. Now, with this

experience, we can use it for this season, and I

hope we can be more successful this season.”

The Tigers have picked up five points from their

opening five league games under City’s new head

coach, Sergej Jakirović, who joined the club in the

summer from Turkish Süper Lig side Kayserispor.

Pandur explained how much he has enjoyed

working with a fellow Balkan, as well as reviewing

our start to the season.

20

It’s a proud

feeling

because this

club has given

me the chance

to play in the

Championship

and the fans

have been

outstanding

with me since

the very first

day – even

when I wasn’t

playing, I felt

their support.

“I love it, and I think the boys do as well,” he

stated. “They bring a really good, positive

energy. They’re clear with their instructions. Play

simple attacking football.

“It has been great, and being from where I am

from, I always speak with them because when

they’re from your country, the relationship is

always different, and I am really happy and

grateful to have them here.

“There have been some ups and downs, but you

can see that we have a good team. Everything

we do in training gets us together, and in the

group, we have some good guys and great

personalities.

“It’s still early, but I think we will do really well

this season because there are a lot of good

characters and winners, and that’s our goal: to

win. I have clear goals for this season, and I just

hope I can be healthy and play with this great

group of people.”

The goalkeepers’ union this season has been a

healthy one with the addition of Dillon Phillips

helping the Croatian’s development. The pair

have also worked closely with Under-21s shotstoppers

Callum Yam and Archie Howard, and

also with Thimotheé Lo-Tutala and Harvey

Cartwright, who are excelling on season-long

loans at Doncaster Rovers and Hartlepool

United, respectively.

He explained: “Dill’s brilliant both on and off

the pitch. I think he brings a lot of experience,

and he’s such a lovely, positive guy who you

can always talk to and learn something from

because he’s been through a lot of things in

his career. I am really happy that I can work

alongside him and learn, and we help each other

at the end of the day.

“The guys are all just so talented. First of all,

they’re great human beings. Tim and Harvey are

doing great, and they deserve it because they’re

great goalkeepers and last season, they didn’t

have it easy, so I think they deserve the plaudits

that are coming their way, and they have a great,

great future.

“Archie and Cal are brilliant; they want to learn

every day. They train hard, don’t complain and

do what is needed from them. I believe they

also have great futures ahead of them, and they

just need to keep working and take their chance

when it arrives.”

City return to the MKM Stadium today hoping

to get back to winning ways against recently

relegated Southampton, who sit 15th after their

opening five Championship fixtures under Will

Still. Pandur is looking forward to being back at

home and hopes the supporters can play their

part like they did against Oxford United to push

against the Saints this afternoon.

“It’s a great opportunity to show what we’re

about and how we want to play football,” said

Pandur. “We know that in this league every team

is good, whether they’re coming down from the

Premier League or up from League One, every

team is competitive, so we need to be fully

focused and ready for everything because a

lot of unpredictable things happen. We will be

ready, and we will do our best to pick up a good

result.

“We talked, us players, saying it was the best

atmosphere that we had experienced since

being here [against Oxford]. It was loud, and we

would love to keep giving them something to

cheer on, and we’ll do everything in our power to

keep them bouncing around.”

LOOKING BACK

ON THIS DAY

‘The Tiger’ looks back into the archives to find out

what happened On This Day in City’s history…

SEPTEMBER

20

1913: The Tigers played

out a goalless draw with

Arsenal, then known as

Woolwich Arsenal, at

Highbury. Watched on by

approximately 25,000

people in the capital,

Harry Chapman’s Hull

City produced a fine

defensive display to

leave North London with

a valiant point against

the Gunners.

1966: Free-scoring

City cruised past Norwich

City by netting five

times without reply at

Boothferry Park. Cliff

Britton’s side came out

of the blocks quickly in

an excellent attacking

display and led 2-0 at

the interval thanks to

goals by Ken Houghton

and Chris Chilton.

The Tigers continued

to dismantle their opponents after the break,

adding three more goals in an impressive second

half, watched on by 24,871 spectators in what was

a special night under the lights.

1958: City stormed to a 4-2 victory over

Accrington Stanley. David Coates opened the

scoring with a quarter of an hour on the clock and

a Bill Bradbury brace either side of Doug Clarke’s

36th-minute strike meant the rampant Tigers led

4-1 at the interval. The visitors pulled a goal back

in the second half, but Bob Brocklebank’s resolute

Hull City held out for an impressive victory at

Boothferry Park and subsequently moved up to

11th in the third tier.

1986: Brian Horton’s men came from behind

to record a fine 3-2 victory at Boothferry Park

against Birmingham City. Trailing by a goal to nil

at the interval, City would fight back to lead 3-1

within five minutes of the second half resuming.

Garreth Roberts scored a minute after the restart

and under 60 seconds later, Peter Skipper had

fired the home side into the lead. The fast start

to the second period continued as Roberts

netted his second, and Hull City’s third, of

the match to seal the victory and help claim

maximum points, moving the Tigers up to sixth

position in Division Two.

TEMPORARY TIGERS

In each edition of ‘The Tiger’, we take a look at the players who

Hull City previously on loan and the impact they made.

NEIL CLEMENT

Appearances: 5

Heritage Number: #906

Neil Clement, who began his career with

Chelsea, joined the Tigers on loan from West

Bromwich Albion in 2008. The defender made

his first-team debut at Stamford Bridge in 1996

before joining the Baggies in 2000, going on to

spend a decade at the Hawthorns.

During his time with Albion, the then 29-year-old

made a brief loan move to Hull City, where he

debuted in a narrow defeat against Bristol City

on 1 March. Clement would tally up another four

impressive performances for Phil Brown’s playoff

chasers before being called back by fellow

promotion hopefuls West Brom just three

weeks later.

Clement’s distinguished career came to an

abrupt end just under two years after leaving HU3

when the defender suffered a chronic knee injury.

PAUL COX

Appearances: 5 | Goals: 1

Heritage Number: #705

Paul Cox made five appearances during a short

loan spell at Hull City between December 1994

and January 1995.

Cox, a solid central defender, scored his only

goal for Terry Dolan’s side in a 2-0 victory over

Shrewsbury Town after City legend Dean Windass

had opened the scoring earlier in the contest.

The defender returned to parent club Notts

County, where he had made 52 appearances over

a six-year stint at Meadow Lane, but was transfer

listed shortly after by manager Howard Kendall

and eventually released by the Magpies four

months later.

Unsuccessful trials with Birmingham City and

Grimsby Town led to Cox joining Conference

National outfit Kettering Town in October 1995. In

2011, the defender was appointed as manager of

Conference National side Mansfield Town, guiding

the Stags back to the Football League in his

second season.

DAN CROWLEY

Appearances: 23

Heritage Number: #1099

Attacking midfielder Dan Crowley joined

Hull City on loan from Birmingham City in

January 2021 and impressed on debut against

Accrington Stanley.

After a dip in form, Crowley was frequently used

as a second-half substitute in Grant McCann’s

team in the back half of the Sky Bet League One

campaign, featuring 16 times off the bench. The

midfielder played a part in City’s promotion back

to the Sky Bet Championship, before returning to

St Andrew’s in the summer of 2021.

The Coventry-born playmaker completed a

permanent move to Cheltenham Town ahead of

the 2021/22 campaign before spending a short

spell in Holland with Willem II. The midfielder

signed for MK Dons ahead of the current season

and has made three appearances so far this

campaign with the Buckinghamshire club.

NICK CULKIN

Appearances: 4 | Clean Sheets: 3

Heritage Number: #783

Nick Culkin holds the record for the shortest

ever Premier League debut when he entered

the field for his only Manchester United

appearance against Arsenal in 1999. The then

19-year-old goalkeeper replaced the injured

Raimond van der Gouw at Highbury deep into

stoppage time and managed just 13 seconds on

the field before the final whistle was blown.

The shot-stopper then joined City on loan in

December 1999 and kept three clean sheets

during his four games with the club, only

conceding one goal. However, Culkin’s time in HU3

came to a close in early January as Steve Wilson

became City’s regular first choice goalkeeper at

the beginning of the new millennium.

The goalkeeper went on to enjoy loan spells with

Bristol Rovers and Livingston before leaving Old

Trafford on a permanent move to Queens Park

Rangers in 2002.

DOUBLE AGENTS

STEVE MORAN

Hull City Career: 21 appearances, 5 goals

Southampton Career: 228 appearances, 99 goals

When talking about making an immediate

impression on debut, Steve Moran is one that

springs to mind. The Croydon-born forward

attended Price’s Grammar School in Fareham,

which housed more Portsmouth fans than

Southampton fans. Winning the Hampshire

County Cup as a first year playing for the

second-year team, the squad was invited to

train at Portsmouth in what could have been a

different start for his career.

“The whole team got invited to train at Fratton

Park with the view to them singling out some

of the better players and they used that as

a scouting tool,” revealed Moran. “I didn’t

particularly enjoy it there and Ray Crawford

did the youth team - we didn’t seem to see eye

to eye.

“Then Southampton came into the equation and

invited me to go training with them. The facilities

to be fair were newer and the gym was bigger, so

I switched to Southampton, because I supported

them and I was there from a youngster when I

could qualify to sign as an associate schoolboy.”

One story of Moran’s youth is that of then-

Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy giving

a promise to the young striker at half-time when

playing for his local side Sarisbury Sparks which

involved a hat-trick and a pair of boots.

“He was looking for a team for his two boys

to join. He watched a game in really muddy

conditions, and the team we were playing against

wasn’t particularly good. I missed a load of

chances because I was wearing moulded boots

at the time and my mum wasn’t able to afford

studded boots. He asked me what was on my feet

at half-time, and I just showed him I had these

moulded boots.

“He said: ‘you have missed lots of chances. If you

score a hat-trick in the second half, I’ll buy you

a new pair of boots so you can be able to stand

up and give yourself a better chance.’ I think I

scored the quickest hat-trick in history! And sure

enough, he was true to his word.”

Progressing through the ranks with the Saints,

Moran’s debut came from the bench against

Manchester City on 19 January 1980, replacing

Ivan Golac. Within the first minute of coming

on, the now-64-year-old would score his first

professional goal in the 2-0 victory.

“I had just a little header first and then I actually

scored after 62 seconds with what was my

first kick. It was a cross across the edge of the

six-yard box and I was coming in far post and

I couldn’t believe my luck. I managed to get a

reasonable touch on it with a side foot and it was

lucky, because if I’d been any further out, it would

have gone over the bar as I hit it upwards.”

Later becoming an established member of the

first team, between 7 October 1980, which was

36

the third senior appearance of his career, and

24 January 1981, the striker scored a remarkable

16 goals in 18 appearances, ending his first full

season with 21 strikes.

Netting 12 times in the first half of the 1981/82

season, Moran suffered two cracked vertebrae

which required a spinal fusion operation and

halted the progression of the striker’s great start

to life as a professional.

“I remember feeling like twinges in my back and

getting almost like a sciatica down my legs and

remember going and telling the physio about it,”

said Moran. “The X-rays didn’t show anything, but

I had just a little

header first and then

I actually scored

after 62 seconds

with what was my

first kick.

I remember it not feeling right. I was running and

I’d have to pull up, because there’d be a twinge in

me. I found out I had cracked a couple of bones

in my vertebrae and it was causing the nerve to

catch.

“I was gutted at the time, because Kevin Keegan

and myself were playing up front and we were

near top of the league at the time, and then

suddenly I was struggling for fitness and needing

an operation which was going to keep me out

for nine months. We kept it quiet. I tried to have

treatments like acupuncture and physio, but

obviously the operation was the only way I was

going to cure it. I’m convinced we would have won

the league that year if I had managed to stay fit.”

Despite the injury, the striker would win the 1982

PFA Young Player of the Year award and then

return to the field doing what he did best; scoring

goals. Netting his first career hat-trick against

Manchester City in March 1983, the 1983/84

campaign would be the most successful for

Moran. Scoring 25 goals, the Saints would finish

second in Division One and reach the semi-finals

of the FA Cup, which included arguably his most

memorable strike in a Southampton shirt, an

injury-time winner away at archrivals Portsmouth

in January 1984.

37

“The build up to the game was amazing. We were

favourites, but Portsmouth were a good side and

we weren’t going to underestimate them. It was

a strange goal as it was everybody’s wrong foot.

It was Frank Worthington who hooked the ball on

with his right foot, who was totally left-footed.

He played the ball down into the right channel

position where, God knows why David Armstrong

was down there, and he is left-footed again as

well, and so he had nothing else but to cross

with his right foot. The ball was probably eight

or nine yards out and there was no way I could

take it with either with my head, which I would

have preferred to, or my right foot, which would

be my favorite foot, so it was a case of letting the

ball come across my body and having to make a

decision to actually hit it with my weaker foot.

“All the hours of practice in the gymnasium

with the coaching staff, mainly Lew Chatterley,

paid dividends as I wasn’t one to smash a ball,

because you lose control. Goalkeeper Alan

Knight did get a good hand on it, but obviously

there was enough power on it and then the rest

is history. The crowd went absolutely berserk

behind the goal, and then I realised, ‘oh my God

what I have done?’ The whole crowd was silenced,

apart from our lot just going mental. I just thought

I need to get off this pitch as quickly as I can after

the game so I stood right near the tunnel to be

one of the first ones off the pitch!”

Representing England Under-21s twice, playing

alongside former City player manager Mark

Hateley in the second game against France, a

question always asked was how the Southampton

striker never played a senior game for the Three

Lions.

“England were preparing for the Mexico World

Cup and the year previously they were playing

some games to get acclimatised,” began Moran.

“There was an original squad of 33 to be picked

for a few games in this country and then they

were going to reduce that squad of 33 to 22 for

the South American trip. However, I was in the

process of planning to get married that summer.

Plus, I’d been playing the last few games of the

season with pain killing injections to a knee injury

and I had put weight on with the season already

ending.

“I wasn’t in the 33-man squad so we had gone

ahead with the wedding plans. I was then called

by Bobby Robson and he wanted to know if

I could join up with the England squad. I was

unfit, had injections in my knee and I was getting

married. But then another thing, which I wanted

to keep quiet at the time and was unknown to

quite a few people, was that my sister had gone

into a coma and was in hospital with a rare brain

disease and she was going to be one of the

bridesmaids at my wedding. That was one of the

main reasons why I turned down the opportunity.

I thought that I would have got another chance.

It probably wasn’t the best decision, but it’s

probably one of the few decisions in football that

maybe it was with the players who came through

at that time, but I was never considered again.”

Playing over 200 games for the Saints, the striker

would then go on to have successful spells at

Leicester City, Reading and Exeter City. Leaving

the latter, the striker would train with an army

physio instructor to be fit for a new club as calf

injuries plagued him in his final season with the

Grecians. Moran would receive a call from City

manager Terry Dolan and his assistant Jeff Lee

ahead of the 1993/94 season for a trial.

“They were looking for a bit of experience in

the striking position. I went up to Scotland for

a training camp and stayed up there. Dean

Windass was there at the time and they got Chris

Hargreaves and Linton Brown who was lightning

quick. I played a friendly and so at the services

on the way home, Terry Dolan said to me: ‘we’ll

offer you a year.’ I said: ‘make it two just to make

it worth your while’ and it was a deal. I signed for

Hull, moved up to the area, rented a place and I

just realised how much I loved the local area and

have stayed ever since.”

The 64-year-old made his Hull debut in the

season opener, a 2-1 away win over Barnet, before

scoring his first goal in his fourth outing, netting

the second in a memorable 4-3 win over Cardiff

City to send the Tigers top of the League Division

Two table.

Recording an impressive hat-trick at Boothferry

Park in a 4-1 thumping of Rotherham United in

November 1993, his fifth and final City strike

came a month later with an 88th-minute finish

in a frantic 4-4 draw against Barnet. However, by

February 1994, injuries caught up with the striker

who would eventually retire.

“It was a bit of a slow start. I didn’t score on my

debut, but I remember the game against Cardiff,”

reminisced Moran. “I picked up calf injuries again,

but I did manage to score a hat-trick against

Rotherham to show the Hull fans what I was

capable of.

“I scored the perfect hat trick; right foot, left foot,

header and I remember we won the game and I

got the match ball. I really enjoyed my time up

there, but unfortunately, the calf injuries were

starting to play up a little bit and eventually it was

one of the reasons why I had to call it a day.”

GOLDEN BOOT

BEN BURGESS

In each edition of ‘The Tiger’, we hear from a former club Golden

Boot winner on their winning season and their time at Hull City.

In March 2003, Ben Burgess was in the final

stages of a loan move at Oldham Athletic.

Outcast by then Stockport County manager

Carlton Palmer, the English-born Irish striker

came to East Yorkshire with a point to prove,

with the move almost not coming to fruition.

“I remember I was on the way to Hull for talks and

then Carlton Palmer rang me and said, ‘you’re not

going there.’ No reason, just that I wasn’t going

there so I had to come back,” revealed Burgess.

“Hull tried again and then we just managed to get

it done, so to say it was a relief to sign for Hull

was an understatement. I remember driving up

and meeting Peter Taylor and seeing the ground

and it was just like wow, I cannot believe this is in

League Two. I knew nothing about the club really,

but I couldn’t believe how big it was.”

Jon Walters just ran

over to me as I was

playing upfront with

him and he said: ‘Ben, I

think that is the worst

hat-trick I have ever

seen!’ It was nice to

score a hat-trick so the

fans could see what

I could do to give me

confidence.

Previously facing Peter Taylor when he was

manager of Brighton & Hove Albion while Burgess

plied his trade at Brentford, the forward quickly

wrote his name into City folklore, scoring the first

hat-trick at the KC Stadium on 26 April 2003 in a

4-1 victory over Kidderminster Harriers.

“It was pleasing (to get off to a fast start). It was

the first hat-trick at the KC Stadium and to say it

wasn’t the best hat-trick was an understatement.

I think one was a tackle, one was a penalty, and

the other was a header from 20 yards.

“I remember when the header went in, Jon

Walters just ran over to me as I was playing

upfront with him and he said: ‘Ben, I think that is

the worst hat-trick I have ever seen!’ It was nice

to score a hat-trick so the fans could see what I

could do to give me confidence.”

Netting four in his first seven appearances

provided an early indication to the City faithful

what Burgess could provide. The target for

the new 2003/04 season was simple: to win

promotion from League Division Three.

Burgess scored the first goal of the season in a

4-1 opening day win over Darlington, while strike

partner Danny Allsopp would net the fourth.

That fixture was the start of an incredible strike

partnership and memorable season.

“We had a decent pre-season as we beat Leeds

comfortably and it was really nice to get off the

mark. Alton (Thelwell) scored and I think that was

his only goal! To win quite convincingly in front of

our own fans put down a marker for us, because

it does take time to settle in when you have the

number of new players that we did.

“Myself and Danny were beginning to build

a partnership. We just seemed to click and I

only had that a couple of times in my career.

Sometimes you play with certain strikers and

they’re selfish, but me and Danny just hit it off

both on and off the pitch. We were good friends

as well and Peter Taylor knows his football so he

saw that I was the type of person that would like

to hold the ball and Danny would like to run in

behind,” added Burgess.

“Because we were the opposite, and we were

both selfless enough to see each others’

strengths, it worked really well. Danny got quite

a few injuries that season and there were a few

periods where he was out which I think if he

hadn’t have been, I probably wouldn’t have been

top scorer, but we would have also got promoted

a lot earlier.”

Burgess was a regular feature, scoring an

impressive 18 times in 44 league appearances

as City were close to their goal of promotion.

However, a home fixture against Huddersfield

Town in April 2004 would end the forward’s

season after a clattering challenge with

goalkeeper Paul Rachubka damaged the

now-43-year-old’s knee.

City would get promoted, but Burgess would

remain out for over a year trying to recover from

the knee injury, playing in the final two games

of the League One campaign as the Tigers

recorded back-to-back promotions. Now in the

Championship, Burgess would only play another

19 times across two campaigns before leaving the

Tigers in August 2006.

“It was a good season for so many different

reasons, apart from when we finally did get

promotion, I was on crutches at the time,” said

Burgess. “The reason we had all signed was to

get promoted. You don’t have someone like Peter

Taylor as manager unless you have that ambition

to get promoted and go places. It was a club that

was going places and that is a lot harder. I had

a promotion with Blackpool where it had been

unexpected, but getting promotion with a team

that is expected and you’re the biggest team in

the league every game, there is a different sort of

pressure and we definitely felt that.

“The team spirit was one of the best dressing

rooms I have been involved with. I think that and

Blackpool are the best dressing rooms I have

been involved with for people being together. The

sort of characters that were in there; it was a fun

place to work. You go in everyday, and you would

work hard, have a laugh, socialise with the boys

afterwards.

“I lived in a flat that was next to Boaz Myhill and

then we had Damien Delaney just round the

corner from us. Alton Thelwell was around the

corner from that so we just spent all season

together and quite a few of the lads lived in

Brough. It was really nice as the wives and

girlfriends of the players got to know each other

as well and just that camaraderie as we spent so

much time together and when you do that, you

will build relationships that you can get trust on

the pitch.

“For me, I made a lot of friends. I really enjoyed

my football and I enjoyed living in the area,”

added Burgess. “I thought the fans were brilliant

playing in-front of a packed out KC Stadium; it

was amazing. The night against Swansea when

Stuart Elliott scored the winner sticks out, but it

was a brilliant place to play and a brilliant place

to live as the fans were so passionate. I look back

with regret on the fact that the season ended

and well my career ended after that Huddersfield

game, because I could never play properly again.

I was maybe 60 or 70% for the rest of my career

at the most, so from that point of view, I was

disappointed with the way it ended, but that first

full season was really good. A lot of them were my

best memories in football.”

| AGE: 21 |

NATIONALITY: ENGLISH

SIGNED FROM: LEEDS UNITED

Signing on deadline day, Darko Gyabi joined the

Tigers on a three-year contract, with a club

option of a further year, from Leeds United.

Making 54 Championship across two loan spells

with Plymouth Argyle over the last two seasons, the

young midfielder earned the Pilgrims’ Young Player

of the Year award last season.

Born in Catford, London, Gyabi began his

footballing career at the age of eight at Cray

Wanderers before catching the eye of Millwall in

2015. He would be then snapped up by Manchester

City at the age of 14, making his City Under-18s

debut in March 2019 as a 15-year-old, replacing ex-

Tiger Noah Ohio against Middlesbrough.

Winning two Under-18 Premier League titles

and two Premier League 2 titles, the 21-yearold

joined Leeds United in 2022, making five

senior appearances for the Whites, including one

in the Premier League against his former club

Manchester City.

On the international stage, Gyabi has represented

England at six youth levels, beginning with the

Under-15s and most recently earning two caps for

the Under-21s last November.

UNDER-21S

The Under-21s began September with a five-star

performance against Birmingham City.

BOBBY MOORE

Braces from Mo Belloumi and Pharrell Brown

along with a finish from Bobby Moore saw the

Tigers record a 5-1 victory over the category

one side at the MKM Stadium.

It was the Blues that opened the scoring as

Alezandro Da Silva arrowed his left-footed finish

into the far corner. Belloumi would equalise

before half-time, curling his strike into the top

corner after Will O’Sullivan punched away Pharrell

Brown’s initial free-kick.

The Tigers would become more clinical as

Belloumi, Moore and Brown scored four

unanswered second-half goals to give Conor

Sellars’ side a winning start in the Premier League

Cup.

Returning to league action, City conceded a

stoppage-time equaliser at MATRADE Loftus

Road in a 1-1 draw, with captain Hugh Parker

netting for the Tigers, before losing competitively

for the first time this season at home to Charlton

Athletic.

Despite Zane Myers opening the scoring at

Bishop Burton College, Charlton raced into a

2-1 lead before half-time with goals from Oliver

Hobden and Henry Rylah. Reuben Reid netted a

third in the second half before the Tigers pulled a

goal back with a stunning finish from Brown.

However, Charlton would secure the win with

eight minutes to play as substitutes Ethan Brown

and Shia-Lee Burnham linked up well, with the

latter prodding the ball past Archie Howard

inside the penalty area before Noah Wadsworth

received a straight red card in injury time.

Hull City (v Charlton): Howard; Wadsworth, Revill,

Moore (Carter 76’), McCarthy, Okike; Ocaya,

Shehu (C); Myers (Henia-Kamau 76’), Destan

(Parker 46’), Brown.

Subs Not Used: Hopper, Devine.

JACK TOPLEY

After a young side suffered a 5-1 defeat away

at Swansea City, Mark Beard and Kemal Dagli’s

side returned to winning ways when defeating

Barnsley 2-0 in the opening group game of the

Professional Development League Cup.

Goals from Jack Topley and Zac Jagielka secured

three points in Group F, with the Tigers later

facing Grimsby Town and Preston North End in

the next two months.

Returning to league action, the young Tigers

began September with a 4-1 defeat away at

Charlton Athletic. Reuben Silk was sent off with a

straight red card on 15 minutes before Shia-Lee

Burnham opened the scoring for the hosts 13

minutes later.

Ed Thomas added a second just moments later

with a stunning free-kick before Burnham added

a third seven minutes into the second half. City

pulled a goal back on the hour mark as Ted Gode

scored from Alfie Maskell’s delivery.

Charlton would secure the points at their training

ground in the 82nd minute as Chetam Ezenwata

headed home from Michael Mylona’s corner.

WELCOME

TO HULL CITY

Please welcome our new signings to HU3!

JOÃO MENDES

POSITION: WINGER | AGE 20

NATIONALITY: BRAZILIAN

SIGNED FROM: BURNLEY

Joining the Under-21s, João Mendes has

penned a one-year deal with the Tigers after

spending last season at Burnley.

Making his Clarets’ debut in a 3-1 away victory

over Bristol City Under-21s a month after

joining, the winger was a regular feature in the

Professional Development League and Premier

League Cup, recording assists in the latter of the

tournaments in group games against Luton Town

along with scoring against Reading.

Beginning his footballing career at the age of 10

at Flamengo, the winger would feature for indoor

football side Vasco da Garna and Boavista-RJ

before signing for Cruzeiro at the age of 13.

A year after joining the club, Mendes penned

his first professional contract with Raposa,

signing a six-year deal in 2019, and would spend

four seasons with the club before departing in

February 2022.

Originally joining Barcelona on trial in January

2023, Mendes featured in a 3-1 win over

Manchester United as part of his trial before

officially signing with the Catalan giants in March,

joining the Under-19 set-up at La Masia.

I just want to help as much

as I can in the Under-21s

and in the first team. I

don’t mind what level, I just

love playing football and

if the chance comes, I will

take great use of it.

COIST WALKER

POSITION: LEFT BACK

| AGE: 16 |

NATIONALITY:

NORTHERN IRISH

Defender Coist Walker has

signed from NIFL Premiership

team Crusaders, starting for

the Under-21s in the first preseason

game of the season

against Maribor.

An unused substitute for

Crusaders’ first team five times

across the 2024/25 campaign,

the 16-year-old has five caps

for Northern Ireland Under-17s,

earning all of them in 2025

between February and June.

“I am absolutely delighted to

join this club as it is a big club

here in England,” said Walker.

“The standard was a lot higher

over here than I am used to

when I came on trial and the

training facilities and the

coaches were great so I knew

this would be the perfect place

to develop.

“Hopefully, I just progress as

much as I can, do well this

season and hopefully move

up to Under-21s maybe next

season.”

KERR REYNOLDS

POSITION: GOALKEEPER

| AGE 16 |

NATIONALITY:

SCOTTISH

Signing from Scottish

Premiership side Hamilton

Academical after a two-year

spell, Kerr Reynolds adds to

the goalkeeper department

for the Under-18s.

Having spells at Celtic, Rangers

and Motherwell in his young

career, the shot-stopper has

been capped for Scotland at

both Under-15 and Under-16

level, producing the matchwinning

save in a penalty

shootout win over Republic of

Ireland Under-16s in October

2024.

“It has been hard to get it over

the line, but I am buzzing to get

started,” said Reynolds.

“It was the set up and the

facilities of the club that

made me want to join and the

healthy competition for places.

I now want to play for the

club and hopefully earn more

international caps for Scotland

in the future.

GEORGE

AKINNIRANYE

POSITION: STRIKER

| AGE 16 |

NATIONALITY: FRENCH

One of the triple signings to

add to Mark Beard’s Under-18

side, George Akinniranye

joins the Tigers on a two-year

scholarship.

The striker began his footballing

career in London at grassroots

level, having his first career trial

at Chelsea. Spending time at

Charlton Athletic and Derby

County, the Paris-born 16-yearold

impressed on trial for the

Tigers prior to joining the club.

“I’m very happy to sign. I have

worked hard for it. I am a very

physical player with good hold

up play, and I just like to score

lots of goals,” said Akinniranye.

“From my trial, all the coaches

and staff provided very good

vibes. I loved the other boys

as they were nice and I just

thought it was the right choice

for me. The hard work starts

from now and I am just excited

for the future.”

We are determined to avoid the

worst-case scenario and politely

ask supporters to adhere to the

ground regulations to maintain

maximum capacity and protect

the atmosphere at matches.

Failure to comply may result in ejection

from the stadium or a banning order.

The club hopes to avoid such
