סנ
In Judaean Exultations, recurring war drums and
horn calls evoke the Maccabean revolt of the second
century B.C., whereafter the Judaeans, victorious,
rededicated the Second Temple in Jerusalem by
lighting a menorah. Chanukah celebrates this victory
and the great miracle that happened when what
appeared to be only a single day’s supply of oil lasted
for eight nights. The eight nights of Chanukah
coincide with the new moon phase of the lunar cycle,
and so they are often the darkest nights of the year,
making them fitting for a festival of candle light. The
songs herein, Ma'oz Tzur, Mi Y'malel, Blessings over
the candles, Sevivon, and Chanukah, O Chanukah!,
are all life-affirming reminders that even on the
darkest of nights, there will be light.
Ma’oz Tzur is a Jewish liturgical poem named for its
Hebrew incipit, which means "Strong Rock (of my
Salvation)" and is a name or epithet for God. The
hymn celebrates deliverance from ancient oppressors,
expresses hope for the rebuilding of the Temple, and
calls for divine retribution against the enemies of the
Jewish people. The tune likely originates from a
German folk song spread among Ashkenazi Jews in
the 15th century. The first stanza is usually sung
during Chanukah.
Mi Y’malel is a well-known Chanukah song. The
opening line is derived from Psalms 106:2, which
reads “Who can retell the mighty feats of God.”
PROGRAM NOTES
Blessings over the candles are sung each night of
Chanukah, often to this popular tune by Samuel E.
Goldfarb (1891-1978). Goldfarb composed this
melody for his brother, Israel Goldfarb. All three
blessings are sung on the first night, and on the
following nights only the first two are sung.
Sevivon, sov, sov, sov is often known as the “other”
dreidel song, associated with the game commonly
played after the lighting of candles. Each side of a
spinning top is imprinted with a Hebrew letter which
is an abbreviation for the Hebrew words
(Nes Gadol Haya Sham, "A great miracle נס
happened there"). The fourth side of some dreidels
sold in Israel are inscribed with the letter פ (Pe),
rendering the acronym פה (Nes Gadol
Haya Po, "A great miracle happened here"), referring
to the fact that the miracle occurred in the land of
Israel. Accordingly, different versions of Sevivon are
sung in and out of Israel.
היה גדול
Chanukah, oh Chanukah! is perhaps the most well
known Chanukah song to non-Jews in the United
States. The song was written by Mordkhe (Mark)
Rivesman (1968-1924), and first published in
Susman Kiselgof's 1912 Lider-Zamlbukh. The
popular English lyrics and a direct translation of the
original Yiddish are provided herein. If so desired,
this movement may be performed independently of
the other movements in the piece.

Who can tell of the heroic deeds of
Israel?
Who can count them?
Yes in every generation a hero arises
To save the people.
Listen!
In those days at this time
The Maccabee saved and redeemed
But in our days the whole people Israel
Will unite, arise, and save.

Chanukah, oh Chanukah
Come light the menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the horah
Gather 'round the table, we'll give

Dreidels to play with, and latkes to

And while we are playing
The candles are burning bright
One for each night, they shed a

To remind us of years long ago
