THE MANAGER
simon parker
WELCOME BACK TO ST MARY’S STADIUM AS WE LOOK TO
CONTINUE OUR UNBEATEN START TO THE 2025/26 SEASON
AGAINST BRISTOL CITY.
We were really pleased
with our opening day
win over Ipswich,
especially given that
we kept a clean sheet
and scored four goals.
To start with a win in
front of our home crowd
was fantastic and it
was great to see such a
healthy crowd to back
us throughout the game.
We know it is hard for
teams who make the
step up to this league
from tier three, and it is
really hard to prepare
for until you are in there.
Our aim was to be
aggressive from the off,
be on the front foot and
put the ball beyond their
defensive line.
The team took a lot of
confidence from that
performance because
we had some tough
games in pre-season
where we weren’t
dominant and didn’t
create loads of chances,
but we were then solid
and created plenty of
openings in our first
competitive fixture.
During the game, we
benefitted hugely from
set-pieces and that is
thanks to the work that
goes into them from
the players and Will Britt
(Goalkeeping Coach).
We put a lot of effort
into them because we
know the importance of
them both offensively
and defensively. The
deliveries were fantastic
on the day and players
stepped up and made
the first contacts.
There are always areas
to improve though and I
felt we needed to make
sure our pressing was
more co-ordinated. If
you are hesitant in that
aspect, the distances
start to grow and the
pockets open up for the
opposition to play in. We
need that aggression with
that co-ordination, so we
can still work on that.
As the momentum of the
game shifted we then
needed to just sit in and
we showed a resilience
in not conceding and
keeping our clean sheet.
We could control those
distances better, but we
were still caught a little
bit in two minds about
whether to press or to
let Ipswich have the ball.
There’s a really simple
fix for that because our
team knows what they’re
doing in that regard.
It just needs a coordinated
effort from the
team to say ‘we’re going
to let them have the ball’
at that late stage of the
game, and you then see
that the opponent starts
to force things and the
ball goes through to our
goalkeeper or out for a
goal kick. We can still tidy
up those moments, and
of course we can still be
better on the ball. We will
gel even more as a team
and we will get players
coming back from injury
too.
Our draw at Palace
was a lively game and
I think we started well
and were dangerous.
The goals we conceded
were avoidable, but to
have the resilience to
come back from behind
twice is massive. We also
withstood pressure at the
end and, once again, that
showed our ability to dig
in when we need to.
The support that we
had in our first home
game was outstanding
and it really doesn’t go
unnoticed. We want to
improve attendances and
we would love to inspire
that next group of players
and girls to get into
football, so hopefully you
keep coming back and
giving us that backing.

Ahead of the season
opener on home turf, the
3,896 Saints fans present
will have been looking
forward to seeing new
signings settling in and
Simon Parker’s team
starting to form – and
they didn’t have to wait
long for some excitement.
Ellie Brazil caused
Ipswich problems from
minute one and cut
the ball back for newly
appointed captain
Atlanta Primus to sweep
home Saints’ first goal of
the new campaign after
just nine minutes.
Two corners then gave
the hosts a comfortable
and deserved 3-0 lead
before half-time.
First, a Tara Bourne
delivery just before the
half hour mark was met
by defensive partner Amy
Goddard, who was too
strong for her marker and
powered home a header.
On the stroke of halftime,
Jess Simpson’s
inswinger then saw Mary
Bashford net her first
goal in Saints colours
we march on
when she flicked home at
the near post.
A confidence boosting
victory was then
confirmed in the second
half as Bashford netted
her second after
stabbing home a loose
ball in the Ipswich area.
A trip to relegated topflight
side Crystal Palace
was next for Saints
and it proved to be a
breathless affair.
Saints started fast and
claimed a third minute
lead when Michaela
McAlonie poked home
from close range, but
Abbie Larkin equalised for
the hosts in South London.
Justine Vanhaevermaet
made it 2-1 to Palace on
28 minutes, but Ellie Brazil
finished Jess Simpson’s
excellent cross to square
things up before half-time.
Brazil then won a penalty
early in the second
period to allow Tara
Bourne to put Saints
ahead from the penalty
spot, but goals from
Abbie Larkin and Ashleigh
Weerden put Palace 4-3
ahead just 10 minutes
later.
Saints claimed a
deserved point though
when Meg Collett’s cross
was deflected into the far
corner of the net to end
the scoring in a eightgoal
thriller.

AS ONE OF A HOST OF NEW SIGNINGS FOR
SOUTHAMPTON FC WOMEN THIS SUMMER,
IT COULD HAVE TAKEN A LITTLE WHILE FOR
MARY BASHFORD TO SETTLE INTO HER NEW
SURROUNDINGS ON THE SOUTH COAST AFTER
HER ARRIVAL FROM CHARLTON ATHLETIC.
The start to the season from
the 20-year-old and her new
teammates has produced some
early positivity about what could be
achieved by Saints this year though.

An opening day
win over Ipswich
Town at St Mary’s
Stadium saw four goals
scored and some real
entertainment for a
healthy home crowd, with
Bashford getting off to the
dream start by scoring
her first two goals at
Women’s Super League 2
level.
Resilience and character
was then shown in
abundance to take a point
away at Crystal Palace,
with Saints and Bashford
knowing that a strong
season could be rewarded
by an extra promotion
spot come the end of the
campaign.
We spoke to Mary as she
prepared to face Bristol
City…
You have had just over
two months as a Saints
player now. How are you
settling into life on the
South Coast?
Yeah, really well. I’m
enjoying it a lot and I’ve
made some really good
friends already. It’s good
fun. I’ve been exploring
around the South Coast
and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.
What about Southampton
was so attractive when
you made the decision to
sign this summer?
I think it just was a case
of me taking my game to
the next level and giving
myself an extra challenge
and something that will
make me step up a bit
more and just taking that
next step in my football
journey.
I think Southampton was
a good place to take that
next step and just try and
improve as a player and
person.
10 // SAINTS
There was a fair amount
of change in the Saints
squad this summer. How
do you feel the squad is
gelling together and has
it helped that a lot of you
are new to the club?
Yeah, there’s definitely
been a lot of new players
coming in and I think that
has helped because we’re
all new and all figuring it
out together.
I think so far we’ve gelled
really well and everyone’s
kind of got along like one
big family really.
How crucial was preseason
in terms of
adapting to Simon
Parker’s demands as the
club’s new manager?
There was a lot of
changes as you say, but
I do think everyone was

I think we’re just a group
that’s gelled well together.
A great win and a hardfought
draw from the
opening two suggests the
team is already in a good
place. How important has
it been for the team to hit
the ground running?
Yeah, it absolutely has been.
I think the biggest thing
was a boost of confidence
for us with that first win. I
think we deserved it from
the hard work we’ve done
in pre-season and I think
it’s really good for us to get
off to a good start and try
and continue that way.

You scored your first
competitive goals as we
beat Ipswich Town on the
opening day – you wait
for one to come, and two
come at once! Talk us
through those moments
for you personally
Yeah, it was just an
incredible feeling really.
I’ve never had one quite
like it and it’s great to hear
the fans as well because
there was a lot of them
there.
It just felt amazing when I
scored my first goal and
then couldn’t really believe
it when another one went
in too.
There have been six other
scorers alongside you
in the two fixtures so far.
There seems to be the
ability to score from all
parts of the team, so how
positive is that?
Yeah, definitely. I think
we’re quite a young squad
so I think things like that
where different people
are getting goals, it gives
individuals a boost of
confidence as well which
is also very good for our
development as a team.
I think it’s great that we
can see that we have lots
of goal scorers, it’s not just
the striker and we’re all
kind of chipping in.
It was a high scoring affair
in the trip to Palace last
time out. It must have given
the team a lot of confidence
to be able to match a team
who have come down from
the top-flight?
Yeah, they’re definitely a
strong team. Not much

There’s something else to

there’s more chances
there at the top of the

Everyone is going for it
because there’s three

it’s very exciting and I
can already feel how
competitive it’s going to
be after just two games.
It is still early days for this
team, but what do you
think can be achieved
this season if the team
reaches its goals?
Yeah, I quite like that
feeling of going under
the radar and just
taking every game as it
comes as you say. If we
find some consistency
- which is what we’re
working on I think at the
moment, just staying
consistent with our
performances - I think
we'll definitely be in with
a chance of taking one of
those promotion spots at
the end of the season.
We saw a great crowd at
St Mary’s for the season
opener against Ipswich.
How good was that to see
for you as players and how
important is it that the fans
keep coming along to give
that backing?
Yeah, it’s huge. I was
quite overwhelmed by
the amount of people
who came to that game.
I obviously want to say
thank you to all the fans
because there was loads
of them.
I love how loud they are
and they are like our twelfth
man on the pitch and
really support us. So yeah,
hopefully we can get them
back to our next home
game and keep going.
