Sustainable Device Management Company Of The Month
Your Partner in Sustainable
Device Management
In this issue of Sustainability Today we have
featured Bamboo Connect as our Sustainable
Device Management Company of the Month.
Bamboo Connect is an international, independent
mobile phone distributor. Headquartered in
Waltham Abbey, Herts, with key service and
distribution centres in Europe and Asia, Bamboo
Connect distributes new and grade A products; as
well as offers fulfilment, salvage management and
recycling solutions to clients all over the world.
Established in 2009 as a mobile distribution
provider, today Bamboo Connect operates in
over 20 countries, supporting insurers, network
operators, retailers, manufacturers and banks
worldwide.
At its core, Bamboo Connect is on a mission to help
the world stay connected without adding to the
e-waste problem. Excessive e-waste is increasingly
becoming a growing crisis, with global electronic
waste projected to hit 82 million tonnes by 2030.
The company’s work is centred on insurance claims,
partnering with insurers to manage the entire
lifecycle of mobile devices after a claim is made.
That includes replacing devices quickly, repairing
and refurbishing where possible, reusing viable
components and recycling what’s left responsibly.
Bamboo Connect delivers end-to-end device
management solutions. The core of the business is
distribution of new and Grade A refurbished devices
worldwide, but the company also offers fulfillment
services with full logistics handling for efficient
returns and maximum value recovery. Its process
is powered by the company’s own SaaS platform,
Optima, which provides clients full visibility and
automation. From processing trade-ins to securely
wiping data and tracking the outcome of every
claim.
Adding value to products, Bamboo undertakes all
aspects of bespoke handset customisation with
a multitude of services ranging from language
variant flashing to the supply of product literature.
The company also repairs and refurbishes devices
to extend lifecycles, offering recycling solutions
that reduce landfill waste and recover valuable
components when devices are beyond repair.
Additionally Bamboo Connect offers claims
management and support for device insurance
providers across the globe.
As an established leader in second-hand device
grading standards, Bamboo Connect is renowned
for delivering top-quality second-hand devices
that consistently meet the highest benchmarks in
quality control and environmental responsibility.
Beyond that, the company manages every stage
of a device’s post-claim life, providing clients with a
complete, integrated solution.
Its Optima SaaS platform makes sustainability
measurable, offering real-time tracking, predictive
forecasting and compliance reporting so partners
can clearly demonstrate their ESG impact.
Combined with the company’s international reach
and strict environmental compliance, this ensures
clients receive solutions that are both reliable and
sustainably responsible.
Bamboo Connect also offers specialist international
consultancy to optimise salvage and fulfilment
operations. Using industry expertise
and data insights, it helps businesses
streamline logistics, cut costs, and
boost revenue. The company’s service
integrates with existing operations,
using intelligent salvage management
(ISM) and dynamic pricing to maintain
consistent costs and maximise value.
Bamboo Connect’s ISM solution is
designed to provide the best possible
levels of service, high levels of return
and total client visibility throughout the
process. Its online ISM platform has
been developed to allow customers to
have total visibility during the salvage
process, detailing and documenting
every stage of the operation and
keeping an audit trail in the form of recorded
information, such as stock lists, pricing matrices and
other communications during the job.
From a production perspective, Bamboo Connect
takes protecting personal data very seriously.
All devices are securely wiped to militarygrade
standards to ensure information is fully
safeguarded. The company’s goal is to show that
success can go hand-in-hand with responsibility to
people and to the planet.
Bamboo Connect also has proven logistical
expertise with customers in every continent across
the globe. This means the company can respond
and execute deliveries at short notice, earning them
the distinction of being one of the few distribution
businesses that can purchase, process and deliver
to customers within 48 hours.
To Bamboo Connect, quality of information and
service levels are paramount. The company relays
important internal information in a sequence
ensuring the process is completed correctly from
start to finish. Goods are securely packaged with

integrated services, while growing new business
opportunities and advancing innovative technology,
including AI-driven solutions, to further enhance
device management and sustainability outcomes.
Looking ahead, the company is also excited to
release its first Impact Report. The report will

FedEx announces
switch from diesel to
HVO to reduce linehaul
emissions in UK
Federal Express Corporation,
the world’s largest express
transportation company, announces its
transition to using biofuels in linehaul
trucks at three UK sites as of this
month.
More than 170 trucks – all tractortrailer
combinations – will now refuel
with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)
across FedEx locations in Parkhouse
(80 tractors), Marston Gate (54
tractors), and Atherstone (38 tractors).
A two-year agreement with supplier
Crown Oil secures the purchase of at
least four million litres of fuel annually.
The change to HVO will deliver certified
lifecycle carbon emissions savings
of at least 80% compared to diesel
and is a way of reducing emissions in
heavy goods vehicle operations. FedEx
Express began using 100% HVO as a
direct ‘drop-in’ diesel alternative in
UK operations in October 2023. That
trial, along with a similar pilot in the
Netherlands, helped identify HVO as a
preferred option for FedEx’s European
road network.
“We’re excited the UK is the first
country where we can scale HVO in
our operations,” said James Richards,
Senior Manager Road Network
Operations UK, FedEx.
Under this agreement, 16 tugs at the
same three sites will also use HVO,
offering a favourable alternative to
diesel where electrification isn’t yet
practical.

Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Based
on this, KHS is now implementing
specific reduction measures.
Following SBTi confirmation of
shared goals with parent company
Salzgitter AG, KHS has set targets to
cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 36%
by 2028, and Scope 3 emissions by
20%. “Our responsibility goes beyond
our own production plants. We
supply our customers with holistic
solutions that measurably improve
their climate footprint,” says Kai
Acker, CEO of KHS GmbH.
The key: efficient and renewable
energies
KHS has switched to green electricity
at all German sites and is optimizing
infrastructure.
Efficient heating,
lighting, and use
of waste heat are
already in place.
In Dortmund,
sensor-controlled
LED systems

use. The vehicle
fleet is transitioning to electric,
and renewable energy is replacing
fossil fuels. Heating networks and
photovoltaic systems are planned at
German and international sites.
Innovations for more climatefriendly
production
KHS helps customers reduce
emissions through systems like the
InnoPET Blomax and Innopas SX,
and its Bottles & Shapes service
enables lightweight PET design.
Net zero by 2050
KHS aims for net zero by 2050, or

Trailer Building Company Of The Month
Food Waste
Trailers Reimagined
I
n this issue of Sustainability Today, we are pleased to
feature Titan Trailers as our Trailer Building Company
of the Month.
‘Simpler Recycling’ will help deliver improved recycling
requirements in England. By ending the confusion over
what can and can’t be recycled, the legislation will
support both households and businesses to recycle
more and reach the Department for Environment, Food
and Rural Affairs’ recycling target of 65%, as part of the
government’s wider Resources and Waste Strategy.
Collectively, this should help to reduce contamination and
stimulate a recycled plastic market. All businesses and
other non-household premises with 10 or more full-time
equivalent employees (FTE) must separate plastic, paper
and card, glass, metals (cans, tins and foil) and food waste
from general waste, saving valuable resources from going
to waste and supporting the circular economy in the UK.
Implementation schedule
t Phase 1 came into effect on 31 March 2025: Mandatory
segregation and collection of dry recyclable materials
and food waste for businesses and non-household
premises with 10+ FTE in England.
t hase 2 comes into effect on 31 March 2026: Mandatory
segregation and collection of dry recyclable materials
and separate weekly food waste collections (which can
be combined with garden waste) for households.
t Phase 3 comes into effect on 31 March 2027:
Mandatory segregation and collection of dry recyclable
materials and food waste rolled out to businesses
and non-household premises with fewer than 10 FTE
in England.
t Plastic films, packaging and in-scope plastic bags to be
collected for businesses and households.
Changes to UK waste recycling regulations under the
banner ‘Simpler Recycling’ have seen leading UK trailer
builder Titan Trailers develop a range of new products
aimed at the rapidly expanding food waste recycling
market.
Alex Adams, Titan Trailers UK operations manager, explains
that the manufacturer’s major customers, the large
recycling and waste management firms, are looking to add
dedicated food waste collection vehicles to their fleets.
“We’re very fortunate in that probably currently about 60%
of our production is for the large corporates and they are
positioning themselves for ‘Simpler Recycling’ because
they envisage it’s going to be a big part of their business
going forward,” he says. “The private smaller waste firms
are very quiet at the minute and those customers are
hanging on to their equipment for longer.”
Titan Trailers has already built six semi-leakproof food
waste trailers for one of its most important clients, Veolia.
Four are operating in Birmingham and two in Shropshire.
The company is now developing a fully leakproof trailer,
which is being built at its parent company factory in
Ontario, Canada. This should be ready for launch early in
2026.
“This will be primarily for food waste, so will be of great
interest to our large corporate clients,” explains Alex.
“The independent operator will probably not buy one
because it’s too restrictive for his day-to-day work. He
wants something that will do everything, for which we
would always recommend our normal trailer.
We wouldn’t recommend the use of the new fully
leakproof trailers for heavier general waste, as they are
designed for a specific role and are not as robust as our
standard landfill spec trailer.”
Food waste trailers can be lighter weight because they
are not designed to go on landfill sites. Instead they will
be tipping at anaerobic digestion plants, which convert
organic waste into biogas.
As with all of Titan’s trailers, the new leakproof versions
will use a moving floor to discharge. The system Titan
Trailers has chosen is from a European market-leading
supplier that specialises in discharge systems for difficult
cargoes such as waste food, fruit and veg.
“Companies collecting, say, oranges from Seville will
always find a few get crushed at the bottom and seep
juice,” says Alex.
“It is very acidic, so they need it to not leak onto the
bottom of the trailer and down onto the road. That’s a
much bigger market in mainland Europe because the UK
doesn’t grow as much citrus fruit as the rest of Europe
does, but we still produce an awful lot of waste, for which
we hope this new product will be of interest.”
Rather than a steel floor, the new food waste range will
have a heavy-duty floor made of aluminium and a 12-plank
moving floor system, with the running gear sitting on the
front bulkhead rather than under the floor.
8 Sustainability Today is sponsored by Bamboo Connect – see them on page 4-5
Trailer Building Company Of The Month
“This means we can, in effect, offer a tanked floor with
the drive on the front operating the moving floor that can
handle up to 12 inches of liquid in the bottom of the cargo
floor system when the door is sealed,” says Alex.
Lightweight or not, Titan’s new food waste trailers will be
built to last, just like the rest of its range.
“If you want the best, come and see us – we believe we
build the best trailers on the market and they’re proudly
made in Great Britain,” says Alex.
Titan Trailers offers the toughest trailers on the market,
all proudly hand-built in the UK. Its UK assembly plant
in Middlesbrough was opened in 2016 by Canadian
manufacturer Titan Trailers, which was established in 1973.
To get into the UK marketplace, Titan first started shipping
complete products across the Atlantic in 2006, and that
initial success encouraged the firm to establish a UK
assembly facility.
Since then, Titan Trailers has built up a 25-strong
workforce with the capacity to build three trailers a week.
Development of the site has seen the best part of £3m
invested in buildings, infrastructure and facilities, including
a £117,000 investment in the paint shop. In 2023, after
an agreement with Newton Trailers to act as Titan’s
authorised dealer in the UK came to an end, Titan brought
its sales operation in-house under the leadership of UK
sales and service manager Cliff Holdsworth. He brings 18
years of service for Titan UK and a wealth of knowledge
and experience to the role.
Titan’s most popular product remains the heavy duty
patented Thinwall moving floor landfill spec trailer. The
sidewall design is two-skinned, with a thicker inner wall
to absorb the impact of all kinds of material loaded from
height so it isn’t transferred to the thinner outer wall.
To bring down costs for the UK buyer, Titan is looking
at sourcing more aluminium extrusions locally and from
mainland Europe. This will help reduce the shipping of
materials from the parent company in Canada and will
also support UK-based suppliers, which Titan is always
keen to do.
Titan has traditionally fitted the Keith Walking Floor but in
2018; to meet customer demand, it started to offer Cargo
moving floor systems as an option. The key difference
between Titan Trailers’ products and some of the European
competition is that Titan trailers are all hand-built in the
UK, making them the toughest and longest-lasting trailers
on the market.
“Our motto is ‘Strength Through Innovation’,” says Alex.
“Yes, our trailers cost more than the mass-produced
European brands, but there’s a good reason for that – put
them side by side in 10 years’ time and tell me which one
was worth the money. That’s why all our customers, both
corporate and independent, love our premium product –
they get better longevity and breakdowns are very few
and far between.”
The latest updates to the food waste trailer’s technical
specifications reflect a focus on durability, safety,
efficiency, and operator convenience. Titan Trailers are
constructed entirely from aluminium, including both the
body and chassis, making it strong yet lightweight, with a
130 cubic yard capacity.
Other specs include
t Cargo Floor ‘Speedster’ 12-plank aluminium floor, front
mounted drive on bulkhead (fully leakproof model)
t KEITH ‘Galosh’ V9 aluminium plank floor, under-chassis
mounted (semi-leakproof model)

Water Management Solutions Company Of The Month
Clear and Efficient Wastewater
Solutions
In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are pleased
to feature Dooley Consulting as our Wastewater
Management Solutions Company of the Month.
Founded by Clare and Michael Dooley in September
2023, Dooley Consulting operates within the
wastewater treatment industry, specialising in
optimising treatment processes, troubleshooting
operational issues, and designing systems from
influent to effluent.
“Michael and I have over 20 years of experience each
working in the water industry. Our company, Dooley
Wastewater & Environmental Consulting Ltd, helps
wastewater treatment plants solve problems, work
more efficiently, and improve or design new systems.
In the past we’ve tackled big challenges, like during
COVID-19 when the technology we developed could
detect the virus in wastewater about two weeks before
it was detected in the community at large. We also
turned a scientific idea—capturing virus particles on
filter paper—into a real, practical method that makes
sample logistics faster and easier, without needing
to move fragile water samples under refrigerated
conditions,” said Clare.
Based in Bathgate, West Lothian, Dooley Wastewater &
Environmental Consulting Ltd works with clients around
the world. Its wastewater treatment service is unique,
offering customised instrumentation & consultancy
solutions to ensure they provide the right match for
each application, meeting the specific needs and
challenges of all clients.
“We are solutions driven, bringing unique and rapid
assessments with a focused approach to analysis
and reporting. We work closely with your existing
operational and engineering teams to troubleshoot
the challenges, and design unique turnkey solutions
with minimal capital investment. We have many years
of experience running treatment works, designing and
developing mechanical, electrical and instrumentation
solutions whilst integrating these with advanced PLC
and automation systems.
In terms of reducing energy in wastewater aeration,
which consumes 2% of all global energy, given that only
20% of wastewater is treated globally, our technology
has incredible potential for climate good. Plus better
treatment controlled reduced greenhouse gas
emissions,” added Clare.
What sets Dooley Consulting apart is its extensive
engineering and process knowledge base,
combined with a capability to rapidly develop new
Instrumentation and Process Engineering solutions
coupled with a dedication to providing clients with
accurate data and reliable instruments that keep
wastewater treatment systems running smoothly
every day. Every instrument they design or install helps
client’s lower energy use, reduce chemical consumption,
and maximise resource recovery—all while staying fully
compliant with environmental regulations. We also
partner with like minded manufacturers around the
world to Distribute their solutions in the UK market. If
companies provide auto-cleaning and auto-calibration
capabilities and share our ethos of customer service
excellence then we will be interested to work with
them. We currently distribute Instru and WaterSam
in the UK and are in late-stage discussions with other
manufacturers regarding their products.
“Our Auto-Clean and Auto-Calibration range of
instruments, with the OUR Sensor are designed
for use in both Aeration Systems of the Activated
Sludge Process and Clean Water applications. Our
Auto-cleaning systems are highly effective and when
combined with consumable free (or very low volume
consumable consumption) we can ensure the most
accurate and reliable sensors on the market. For
example, if Dissolved Oxygen Probes were regularly
and efficiently cleaned this is known to have a 10%
difference in accuracy which has huge energy savings,
financial implications, and negative GHG impact. Most
sites operate on a higher DO setting to compensate for
this drift,” said Clare.
Dooley Consulting was able to demonstrate the
INSTRAN Ammonia Analyser’s unique features of
auto-cleaning and auto-calibrating at WWEM 2024.
Prepared to comply with Section82 of the Environment
Act 2021, it is the best analyser solution for monitoring
water. Offering high accuracy, low maintenance, autocalibration
every measurement by standard known
addition as well as auto-cleaning to adapt the analyser
to waste water samples, low consumption of reagents
to increase autonomy, essentially INSTRAN is an online
analyser to measure different chemical and physical
parameters in aqueous solutions, such as drinking
water and waste water, which allows automated
control of the parameter.
“I was really proud to watch Michael Dooley
demonstrating how our new RTC SensorRange works
live at WWEM2024! Alongside our new Distribution
Product, the INSTRAN on-line Ammonia Analyser,
supported by Carlos Salinas Señis.
RTC Sensor system had the ability to analyse and
provide consumable free auto calibration of - Dissolved
Oxygen, Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids and Oxygen
Uptake Rate, not just in Rivers or Wastewater
Treatment Facilities and it’s also small enough to be
used in a lab.
Combining this with the ability to measure ammonia
online, by implementing reliable, automated known
standard addition calibration protocols every
measurement, the INSTRAN unit is setting a new
benchmark for ammonia measurement accuracy and

Water Management Solutions Company Of The Month
by several global blue-chip clients to improve treatment
capacity and operating costs base. Within these
projects we use our own developed instrumentation
as well as our other like-minded distribution partners
instruments. Now that our developed products have
completed long term reliability trials, we expect the
sales of these instruments to have significantly greater
share of our turnover.” Of course, where the solution
already exists in the market, we will recommend other
manufacturers solutions as our key objective is to solve
the customers problems as quickly as possible. Since
our founding 2 years ago we have
stability, which is essential for rigorous regulatory
compliance, as required by Section82 and all other
applications.
This combination of instrumentation for Section82
results in significant reductions in energy costs,
reductions to operator/lab/sampler technicians’ time, is
consumable free - (Instran Ammonia minimal reagents
consumption), and allows for auto-cleaning and autocalibration
of all parameters,” said Clare.
Clare continued to explain the company’s recent
collaboration for the Section82 River Water
Monitoring programme:
“All English Water Companies are being mandated to
monitor the river before and after their storm overflow
and discharges to River courses. Our instrumentation
will measure ammonia, DO, conductivity, temperature
pH and turbidity, ensuring fit for purpose for rural
installations with appropriate remote access to data
and power supply to ensure at least one month
running without servicing requirements. We have the
only ammonia ISE set-up from INSTRU that will ensure
the integrity of the ammonia measurement- testing
and calibrating every 15 minutes. We believe that this
auto-calibrating approach will significantly improve
data reliability and will not only significantly reduce
reactive service call outs but we will be able to push
servicing intervals to at least three months without
requiring any human intervention.”
Dooley Consulting also launched at WWEM 2025
an advanced Toxicity Analyser. The ToxSens fully
automates the Toxicity Measurement Process and
the same unit can be installed as both an online
and laboratory instrument set up for ease
of use and minimum intervention. This
analyser will be able to measure the
toxicity of a waste in relation to
the actual WWTP’s own bacterial
population in addition to using
standardised bacterial sources
such as Daphnia.
“The ToxSens gives our
customers confidence in,
for example, whether a
tanker is able to send its
waste straight to treatment
or whether pretreatment
or further considerations are
needed to treat a particular waste,”
added Clare.
Dooley Consulting is committed to creating
innovative solutions, as shown through its RTC
Instrumentation. And if a solution doesn’t yet exist,
Dooley Consulting will build it. This approach not only
ensures compliance but also lowers operational costs
and reduces greenhouse gas emissions—particularly
carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.
Rather than shoehorning generic, off-the-shelf
solutions, Dooley Consulting tailors treatment systems
with innovative, site-specific designs—a capability that
both Clare and Michael are extremely proud of.
We asked Clare what their most popular service is
and why:
“Currently our consulting services are being widely used
t Provided support for customers to deploy
equipment in ATEX atmospheres.
t Provided project management support for Aeration
systems installations in high hazard environments
including confined space entry, flammable
atmospheres, rope access and LOLER regulations
compliance.
t Designed several new wastewater treatment
systems including high volume activated sludge
processes, DAF and Filtrations systems, MBBR
Systems, Instrumentation and Automation systems,
t Developed 3 new instrumentation and sampling
devices.
Looking ahead, Clare explained the company’s future
plans:
“We are constantly innovating in our
RTC instrumentation Ltd sister
company. We are listening
to the market needs and
are designing products
to meet those needs.
We are looking to sell
(and or form global
partnerships) our
innovative products
to bigger names in
the market to ensure
our climate mitigating
products reach a wider
audience- creating a wider
global benefit.
We have had several
approaches from global companies
to take on our new instruments. The
feedback we have received is that the big
players in the marketplace have difficulty bringing
innovation to market with the constraints of huge
organisations in a timely manner. We will look to meet
and exceed these needs.
Our capabilities for developing Innovations and
Technology development, delivered in a rapid agile
cost-effective manner is our core strength. We are
always open to discussions with potential clients and
collaborators.”

Velorim, founded in
Staffordshire by Russ
Taylor and Richard Lawrence,
traces its roots back to a
bicyclerecycling charity that
uncovered a frustrating
recycling gap: no-one handled
bicycle tyres or inner tubes. In
order to address that challenge,
Velorim launched its National
Bicycle Tyre Recycling Scheme
in 2018, establishing the UK’s
first dedicated network for
cycling rubber collection.
The scheme began with
only a few collection sites,
but has since expanded to
over 700 locations across
the UK, typically bike shops
and refurbishment charities.
Velorim recommends that
cyclists pay a small levy to the
Velorim Centres to responsibly
recycle these materials.
Behind the scenes, Velorim’s
innovative processing
separates rubber, steel, and
fibre, transforming them into
valuable products. The rubber is
reengineered into trademarked
materials like VeloButylene
and VeloSBR, while fibre will
eventually be broken down and
used for fuel and graphene,
Velorim’s pioneering shredding
machinery even tackles the
challenge of the tough metal
bead in bicycle tyres.
As of late 2024, Velorim had
collected and recycled more
than 150,000 tyres and the
same number of tubes, and
plans to double its UK collection
points by the end of 2026,
solidifying their role in making
UK cycling truly sustainable.

Beyondly’s perspective: Evolving RAM to drive
circular packaging solutions
Circularity means thinking bigger than whether
materials can be collected and reprocessed, it’s
about designing packaging systems that cut
waste, lower carbon, and create lasting value for
businesses, consumers, and the planet.
With new UK circular economy policies on the
horizon and growing debate over alignment
with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste
Regulations (PPWR), Beyondly’s Alex Hilton will
examine how the Recyclability Assessment
Methodology (RAM) must adapt to meet
the future of regulation.
The packaging sector is in the spotlight
like never before. There are new
opportunities to drive change, new
rules, ambitious sustainability goals, and
increasing expectations from both regulators
and consumers. One of the key tools shaping how
businesses respond is the RAM, now a mandatory
framework for assessing packaging recyclability.
The RAM is now an obligatory tool for assessing
packaging recyclability, but to truly meet the
ambitions of Extended Producer Responsibility
(EPR), it must evolve, but how?
That’s the question that Alex Hilton - Director of
Policy and Public Affairs at Beyondly and
one of the driving forces behind the
creation of RAM - will tackle on the
Circular Innovation Stage at Recycling
Expo.
This conversation is especially timely,
considering the forthcoming circular
economy strategy and the debate on
how this should align with the EU’s PPWR
and other wider factors including lifecycle carbon
assessment. Alex will be sharing his personal
insights into the tools’ methodology and its
current strengths and outline enhancements that
could transform it into a driver to circularity.
Businesses are facing pressure on multiple
fronts, from regulations, customers, and their
own sustainability commitments, and need clear,
practical direction on what comes next.
If you are attending Recycling Expo and are
involved in packaging compliance, packaging design
or sustainability strategy - this is not a session to
miss. Alex’s unique perspective, shaped by both
his role in creating RAM and his work at Beyondly,
offers clarity on where recyclability assessment sits
today and where it must go tomorrow.
And if you would like to continue the conversation,

event.

Lives,” comes at a critical
time when plant safety,
regulatory compliance,
and risk mitigation are
more vital than ever.
Bringing a sharp
engineering perspective and
practical industry insight,
Matt will outline how ignition
sources can be mitigated to
prevent fires during shredding,
waste handling, baling, and
waste storage operations. He
will also explore how, in certain
processes, IEP Technologies can help prevent potential
ignition sources from developing into fire and in some
cases devastating explosions which both threaten entire
facilities.
With over 60 years of experience delivering marketleading
explosion protection solutions, IEP Technologies
has built a reputation for safety and innovation—and
Matt is a key part of that legacy. A qualified mechanical
engineer with an HNC and a decade of technical sales
experience in material handling and ATEX environments,
Matt and the UK team have the expertise to tackle
complex safety challenges. He and his teams primary
focus is helping customers mitigate fire & explosion risks
within industry by listening to their needs and designing
tailored explosion protection systems that comply with
regulations, IEP Technologies’ design guidelines, and EN
standards.
Founded in 1956 as one of the earliest pioneers in
industrial explosion protection, the company—then known
as Graviner—played a vital role in safeguarding
numerous industrial processing sectors in the
post–Second World War era. By 1959, Graviner
had already prevented 35 industrial explosions,
and over the decades, it evolved into a true
global leader in the field. With this
longstanding legacy of expertise,
the company has continued
to earn the trust of customers
across all five continents.
In 2015, the company joined
the HOERBIGER Safety
Solutions Group—a renowned
global manufacturer with a
distinguished history in the
automotive and compression
industries. Now operating as
IEP Technologies, and with access to
state-of-the-art facilities across Europe,
the US, Latin America, and Asia, the
company is supported by a dedicated team
spanning research and development, consultancy,
service, and maintenance. This powerful combination
of heritage, expertise, and global reach positions IEP
to deliver advanced, cutting-edge explosion protection
solutions to process industries worldwide.
The UK operations are based in Cheltenham; however
IEP Technologies is a globally operating market
leader in explosion protection. The company offers a
comprehensive range of solutions — from simple passive
systems such as venting, flameless venting, and isolation,
to advanced active systems including suppression
technologies.
IEP Technologies has recently expanded its portfolio with
the addition of the ATEXON spark detection system — a
market-leading and uniquely designed solution. Spark
Detection and Extinguishing Systems are widely used
across industrial facilities to prevent and mitigate the
risk of fires and explosions. They work by continuously
monitoring processes for potential ignition sources
such as sparks, embers, hot particles, or overheated fan
components. By choosing an Atexon system with FM
Approval, users can be confident that it has undergone
thorough testing and certification by a globally
recognized, nationally accredited testing laboratory.
A core element of the system is the innovative SD300-
EX Spark Detector. Designed to reliably detect ignition
sources in both visible and infrared light wavelengths, it
maintains exceptional accuracy even in dense material
flows. The SD300-EX also offers a wide 180° field of view,
minimising blind spots and often reducing the number
of detectors required. For certain applications, it can be
installed without welding, helping to lower installation
time and costs. What’s more, each detector is constructed
with corrosion-resistant stainless steel (AISI 316L)
housings to ensure long-term durability.
In addition to achieving globally recognised FM
Approval, the Atexon system has recently undergone a
comprehensive design upgrade — delivering enhanced
performance, greater application flexibility, and improved
ease of installation for users.
“Our market leading spark detection systems are FM
approved and have been put to work heavily in the
recycling industry. More specifically where companies
are processing materials susceptible to fire, from paper/
cardboard, wood, municipals, rubber/ plastics, and RDF.
These prevention systems have proved valuable on many
processes such as shredding, bailing, sorting, and material
transfer points. Our customers have seen tangible risk
reduction of small ignition sources developing into large
fires in areas with a rich fuel source – which can so often
have devastating effects. Together We Save Lives,”
stated Matt.

DO YOU
KNOW YOUR
EXPLOSION
RISK?
No matter what you're processing – chemicals, food,
pharmaceuticals, biomass, wood products – if it produces dusts
or powders, there's a high probability you have an explosion
risk. All it takes to interrupt plant productivity is a combustible
material, oxygen and an ignition source.
For more than six decades, IEP Technologies has provided the
right explosion protection solution for every type of process
application. From cyclones and dust collectors to milling
equipment and dryers. We can design a protection
system and surround you with 24/7 service and support.
Protecting plant starts with knowing your explosion risk.
Explosion

The IEP

eSUPPRESSOR
is a high-rate
discharge
suppressor used
for explosion
suppression and
isolation systems. Its
electro-mechanical
operation is unique
to the industry, as no
pyrotechnic devices are
required for activation.
The eSUPPRESSOR has
standard features that include
pressure monitoring, lock out tag out
capability and LED indication of device
status. A key benefit is that all the
safety functions are fully monitored,
which is not possible for any device
employing pyrotechnic actuators. The
eSUPPRESSOR design & manufacture
has SIL2 third party certification.
Spark Detection:
Atexon ®
Passive Protection Devices:
The ‘Next Generation’ Atexon ® Spark Detection and
Extinguishing systems by IEP Technologies have recently
received third party approval by Factory Mutual (FM),
meeting the latest detailed requirement of FM3265:2020. For
UK users the equipment is also certified to UKCA, UKEX and
VDS certification is in the pipeline. The innovative Atexon ®
SD300-EX series spark detector is a world first being able to
detect visible light (VIS), near infrared light (NIR) and infrared
light (IR), with a 180° field of view. The benefit being it has
the ability to see different ignition sources though material
layers, even with dense material flow, with reduced hardware.
Typically, the most cost-effective explosion protection method in terms of
hardware, install and maintenance is IEP Technologies’ passive protection
devices. These include vents, flameless vents and isolation devices. Explosion
relief panels are calculated to vent a deflagration, and in doing so prevent
the rapid developing pressure. This reduces the chance of vessel rupture, and
structural damage. Similarly flameless vents work by the same principle, allowing
the heat and pressure dissipation but differ from a traditional vent by mitigating
the flame from passing into the atmosphere outside the flame arrestor. This type
of venting method has all the benefits of traditional venting but has the added

Envirovue Director Shares
Guidance on Upcoming
Waste Regulations
Daniel Redfern,
Director at
Envirovue, an
innovative waste
management
specialist, shares
advice on how
businesses can
prepare for the new
legislation.
"The new rules will force drastic
improvements across waste
management, both from an
environmental and efficiency point
of view.
"For businesses with a variety of
streams, separating waste can
become complex and time-consuming.
Food waste is inevitable for most
large businesses in the UK, and whilst
it may have previously been disposed
of with general waste, from March
2025 it must be separated.
"For companies producing a large
amount of waste, it's useful to
implement a tracking
system to record how
much food waste your
business generates
and where it goes. This
makes it easier to see if
too much food is being
produced. Organic waste
can also be of value—it
can be used as compost
or raw material for
anaerobic digestion.
"To avoid a fixed penalty notice,
companies must understand the
types and frequency of waste
produced. Investing in waste surveys
and collecting insightful data is key to
identifying areas where waste can be
reduced and managed.
"Choosing the best waste
management partner is also vital.
Working with accredited food waste
recycling services ensures compliance
with the new regulations."
