THE HEAD COACH
GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME BACK FOR OUR
SECOND GAME HERE IN THE VERTU TROPHY.
After a winning start against Rotherham we want
to add to that if we can with another three points
to put us in a strong position in the group stage of
the competition.
That won’t be easy, though, as Manchester City will
have the same target and I’d like to welcome their
coach, Ben Wilkinson, his staff, players and those fans
who make the short trip this evening to support their
young players.
City’s U21s started out with a 5-1 win at Oldham and
played very well that night. It’s never easy playing
these academy sides as you don’t know for sure who
you’ll facing and what their individual qualities are.
But we do know that they will be quick, athletic and
technically very good players who will give us a test
and make sure we have to be right on our game.
As we always say, the league remains the priority and
we go into tonight on the back of an excellent win
here against Wigan last Saturday. It wasn’t the perfect
performance and there are always ways to improve
but, overall, I was delighted with how we went about it
in terms of being ruthless early on and then standing
firm later when we relinquished a bit of control and
had to re-group to stay solid.
Most importantly, I was delighted to get another home
win and make it a special day for all our fans who
haven’t enjoyed that fixture so much in recent years.
However, we want to win any game we play and also
want to maintain the momentum we are building,
which means we will also be taking tonight’s game
very seriously. Our only defeat since the opening day
has been on penalties and winning in any competition
adds to that momentum and belief within the squad
that we are heading firmly in the right direction.
This tie also comes at a good time to utilise the squad
and involve players who will benefit from having a
game in a competitive environment. We will certainly
rotate the team after the efforts of last Saturday but
we will still be strong with an experienced line-up.
A few of the players who haven’t started recently,
or been in the match-day squad, will figure tonight
which, again, can only help going forward. We have
got a very competitive squad with some real depth
when nearly everyone is fit and having as many
players as possible up to speed can only be a good
thing for the weeks and months to come.
I know the atmosphere tonight won’t quite be the
same as Saturday, which was fantastic, but we fully
appreciate the backing of everyone who is able to get
to any of our games and I know those that are here
will get behind the lads as we look to keep moving
forwards in another competition.
Enjoy the game.
Steven

RAMPANT WANDERERS BLEW DERBY RIVALS WIGAN
ATHLETIC AWAY WITH A GALE-FORSS WIND TO END A
DECADE OF HOME DERBY HURT, WRITES PETE OLIVER.
The Whites hadn’t beaten the Latics on their home patch in more
than 10 years and hadn’t scored a goal in three painful losses in a
row to their neighbours at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
But those memories were quickly blown away thanks to the Gale-Forss
double act before top scorer Mason Burstow added to his tally at the
end of a one-sided first half.
On-loan Middlesbrough man marked his first league start for the Whites
to add a second quickly after half-time to set up a possible deluge of
goals on a rain-lashed afternoon.
But Wigan – whose unbeaten 10-year record anywhere against
Wanderers was ended on their own ground in April – made sure they
wouldn’t be completely swamped as they hit back through Paul Mullin’s
fine strike.
That ended the scoring on an action-packed
afternoon as the Whites’ defence then stood firm to
repel a flurry of late corners.
But Steven Schumacher’s men had long since done
the damage as they extended their unbeaten run
to eight league games in front of an ecstatic home
crowd of over 25,000 – the third biggest in the
stadium for a regulation EFL fixture – who had
waited a long time for this day.
It couldn’t have gone much better as Schumacher’s
men turned on the style from the off. Wanderers’
wingers tore Wigan apart and it was fitting that
wideman Gale fired the Whites in front as a he rifled
a shot into the roof of the net with 15 minutes gone.
Gale then teed up Forss for a coolly-taken second
before Burstow added his fifth of the season with a
superb low strike into the bottom corner.
Forss pounced on a defensive mistake five minutes
after the re-start to cap an excellent afternoon’s work
from the flying Finn. And even though the visitors
avoided any further damage, this was an afternoon
to savour for Schumacher’s fast-developing side and
the jubilant home fans.

manchester city u21s
MANCHESTER CITY’S YOUNGSTERS ARE BIDDING TO ADVANCE FROM THE
GROUP STAGE OF THE EFL TROPHY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FIVE SEASONS
WHEN THEY COME TO WANDERERS LOOKING FOR POINTS, WRITES PETE OLIVER.
A winning start at Oldham puts City’s Elite
Development Squad (U21s) joint top of Group E
along with the Whites.
And so, one more win either this evening at the
Toughsheet Stadium or in their final group game at
Rotherham towards the end of next month could be
enough to take them into the knock-out rounds as a
top-two finisher.
City haven’t been that far since 2021 and a last-32
exit at Tranmere Rovers, with their best run in the
competition a journey to the quarter-finals in 2018/19,
the first of three times they have made it out of the
group stage.
The quarter-final clash in January, 2019 saw City
lose 2-0 at Sunderland, who went on to reach the
final, with City – who first entered the competition in
2017/18 – then making it as far as the last-16 and a
defeat to Scunthorpe United the following season.
Not that City’s second string aren’t used to success.
The club’s U21 side has won the Premier League 2
title four times, including last season, while a number
of tonight’s line-up were also likely to have been part
of City’s U18 side which won the FA Youth Cup in
2024.
In Opposition
England youth international Justin Oboavwoduo
opened the scoring in a 4-0 win over Leeds United
to give City a fourth success in the Youth Cup and
Justin Oboavwoduo
Luke Mbete
was then on target for the U21s as they kicked off
their Vertu Trophy campaign this time with a 5-1 win
at Oldham Athletic.
The squad – managed by Youth Cup-winning
boss Ben Wilkinson, son of former Leeds United
and Sheffield Wednesday manager Howard – also
contains some other familiar names.
Brothers Jaden and Reigan Heskey are the sons of
former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Leicester City striker
Emile Heskey, who finished his playing career with
Wanderers in 2015-16.
And one of City’s more senior players who could be
involved tonight is former Whites’ loanee Luke Mbete,
who played nine times for Wanderers in the 2022/23
season and was part of the Wembley-winning squad
which lifted the Trophy in April, 2023.

Wanderers and Manchester City’s U21s go into
tonight’s Vertu Trophy tie leading the way in
Northern Group E after both kicked off with wins.
City sit top of the table on goal difference thanks to
a 5-1 win at Oldham Athletic, while Wanderers beat
Rotherham United 1-0 in their opening home game
thanks to a goal from Thierry Gale, who then received
a red card which will see him miss the next three
Trophy games.
The top two teams in the group will go through to the
knock-out stages and the last-32.
Oldham and Rotherham meet in a fortnight’s time
(Tuesday, 7th October) with Wanderers completing
their group games with a trip to Boundary Park to
take on the Latics on Tuesday, 11th November.
City and Rotherham complete their round-one
fixtures when they face each other at the New York
Stadium on Tuesday, 28th October.
Bolton Wanderers Women have been drawn away
to North-East side Rutherford Ladies in the third
qualifying round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
Myles Smith’s side earned a trip to Tyneside thanks to
a 5-0 win over Chester FC at the second qualifying
stage on Sunday.
Abbie Brown (2), Madison Hardman, Eleanor Seals
and Evie Sadler got the goals to put Wanderers one
more win away from a place in the first-round proper.
The tie against Gateshead-based Rutherford Ladies,
who play in Division One North of the North-East
Regional Women’s League, is scheduled to be played
on Sunday 5th October.
Congratulations to George Johnston who clocked
up 150 appearances for the Whites in last
Saturday’s derby win over Wigan Athletic.
Fittingly Johnston was Whites’ captain for the 4-1 win
against the club where the defender, 27, spent a spell
on loan before joining Wanderers from Dutch club
Feyenoord in June, 2021.
Club Historian
Simon Marland
SIMON MARLAND TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THE WANDERERS PREVIOUS
GAMES AGAINST UNDER 21/23 SIDES IN THE EFL TROPHY.
Tonight sees the Wanderers face under 21/23
opposition for the ninth time in the EFL Trophy
and the second occasion that Manchester City
have been the opponents.
August 2016 saw Bolton play their first game in the
EFL Trophy in 24 years when they hosted Everton
Under 23’s and gave first team debuts to Jack Earing
and Alex Perry. Everton won the game with goals
from Callum Dyson and Conor McAleny to become
the only non-first team side to defeat Bolton inside
90 minutes so far in the competition.
In October 2019 two goals from Chris O’Grady and
one from Ali Crawford (pictured scoring) gave the
Wanderers a 3-1 win against Manchester City Under
23’s and the following season it needed an 85th
minute goal from Jamie Mascoll (pictured scoring) to
earn a 3-2 win against Newcastle United Under 23’s
who had led at half time.
Liverpool under 21’s were beaten 4-1 in October
2021, a debut from the bench coming for Academy
player Arran Pettifer, whilst the following season
Bolton defeated Leeds United under 21’s 3-0 and
Manchester United under 21’s 4-0 on the way to
winning what was then the Papa John’s Trophy.
Bolton recorded their biggest win in the competition
in September 2023 when Manchester United
were thumped 8-1 with the last occasion that the
Wanderers had notched eight was way back in 1983
against Walsall.
Last season it was Aston Villa under 21’s who visited
the Toughsheet Stadium with a 1-1 draw resulting
after ninety minutes with Victor Adeboyejo (pictured
scoring) scoring Bolton’s goal. Villa went on to take
the extra point with a 4-1 penalty shoot out success.
