CAPTURING CHORLTON IN INK:

LEN GRANT’S NEXT SKETCHBOOK PROJECT

It was a pleasure catching up with artist and

storyteller Len Grant this week in the leafy

neighbourhood of Chorlton. For more than

thirty years, Len has documented Manchester

life as a freelance photographer—but for over a

decade now, he’s also been capturing the city

with pen and watercolour as an urban sketcher.

His latest project, Chorlton Sketchbook 2024–

2025, is already taking shape. This will be Len’s

fourth urban sketchbook, following his wellloved

editions that have shone a light on different

corners of Greater Manchester. Chorlton,

just a short cycle from his home in Withington,

is the star of this new collection. As ever, Len is

pairing his illustrations with thoughtful stories

about the people and places that make the

area unique.

Victoria Road

WHALLEY RANGE

The finished book will be a 96-page publication,

due for release in Autumn 2025—a true

celebration of one of Manchester’s most vibrant

suburbs.

In the meantime, you can follow Len’s progress

on Instagram, where he regularly shares workin-progress

sketches and snippets from his

Chorlton wanderings. Prints from the project

are also available to purchase through his online

shop.

Stay tuned for updates on the launch—it

promises to be a wonderful moment for Chorlton,

and we can’t wait to share more details as

they’re announced.

IN THE COMMUNITY...

A DECADE OF PURPLE PRIDE:

OUR PARTNERSHIP

WITH JP & BRIMELOW

ESTATE AGENTS...

As manager of Longford Park JFC Girls U17s,

I’ve witnessed firsthand how strong communities

are built on lasting partnerships and shared

values. For the past ten years, we’ve been

proud to call JP & Brimelow Estate Agents our

sponsor, and I’ve watched my group of enthusiastic

seven-year-olds transform into confident,

skilled young women who proudly wear their

purple colours on pitches across the region.

Growing Together: A

Journey of Partnership

What started as a simple sponsorship arrangement

has blossomed into something far more

meaningful. These remarkable girls have been

training together for a decade, forming bonds

that extend well beyond the football pitch.

Week after week, season after season, they’ve

shown up in JP & Brimelow Estate Agents

purple, representing not just our club, but the

values our sponsor holds dear: dedication,

teamwork, and community spirit.

Watching them develop from those early days

of learning basic skills to becoming accomplished

footballers has been incredibly rewarding.

Their journey reflects the kind of long-term

commitment JP & Brimelow Estate Agents has

shown us – built on consistency, perseverance,

and mutual support.

Riding the Wave of

Women’s Football

The recent success of England’s Lionesses has

created an exciting surge in girls’ football participation,

and we’ve been at the forefront of

this movement at Longford Park JFC. I’m seeing

more and more girls picking up their boots

and joining our club, inspired by seeing women’s

football celebrated on the national stage.

This growth reflects something I’ve always

known – when you provide opportunities and

support, young people thrive. The confidence,

leadership skills, and resilience my girls develop

on the pitch serve them well in all aspects of

life, from the classroom to their future careers.

14 JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK

More Than Just Football

Looking Forward

At Longford Park JFC, we offer something

special for both boys and girls in our community.

Yes, they’re developing football skills and

improving their fitness, but the real magic happens

in the friendships formed and the social

skills developed. These young people learn to

communicate, collaborate, and support one

another through wins and losses alike.

Having JP & Brimelow Estate Agents as our

sponsor means working with a business that

truly understands the importance of community.

As estate agents, they help families find

homes where they can put down roots and become

part of something bigger. Their support

of our local youth football shows their commitment

to nurturing the communities they serve,

ensuring they remain vibrant places where

families want to live and grow.

Our ten-year partnership with Eddie at JP &

Brimelow Estate Agents represents more than

sponsorship – it’s been an investment in our

community’s future. These young women will

go on to become leaders, professionals, and

role models themselves, carrying forward the

values they’ve learned on the pitch.

If you have a young person who would benefit

from being part of our fantastic club, I encourage

you to visit https://longfordparkjfc.co.uk/

to learn more about the opportunities we offer

for both boys and girls.

We’re incredibly grateful to Eddie for his

unwavering support over the past decade. JP

& Brimelow Estate Agents aren’t just about

buying and selling properties – they’re about

building stronger communities, one partnership

at a time. And we’re proud to be part of that

mission.

CleverClear is a Greater Manchester based house

clearance specialist providing fast, eco friendly

disposal of any unwanted items for homeowners,

landlords, and property professionals. Whether you

require a full house clearance of a ‘hoarders house’ or

the disposal of a single item, CleverClear are experts

in taking care of the whole process.

When buying, selling, or letting property, the removal

of any kind of accumulated and unwanted items can

be a logistically difficult and often daunting task.

CleverClear was founded by its owners who have

decades of experience in the property and waste

industry.

‘Our goal is to provide a great service, and to reduce

landfill’ says Kerry Murphy, one of the Directors of

CleverClear. ‘We do this by listening carefully to our

clients needs and by being meticulous in the separating

and sorting of items and materials so that we can

reuse, recycle, and donate as much as we possibly

can. We found that many people became frustrated

with charities and clearance companies that would

only pick and choose items from a property, and not

be able to fully solve a clients problem. It just wasn’t

helpful for them. They were often selling a house,

working to a timescale and needed the property

empty, and they required a solution that simplified

the whole task.

Once CleverClear has removed any items a client

needs taking away, our knowledgable and energetic

team then get to work reusing what we can, recycling

the various separated materials, and donating

anything useful to a network of excellent charities. It

can be a complicated task but we love the challenge!

We are often working for executors of deceased

estates, or with individuals who do not live close by

to the property, so it is extremely important that we

communicate clearly and professionally, being aware

of what sometimes can be sensitive and stressful

situations. We have a fleet of specialised vehicles

meaning that we never use unsightly and inefficient

skips, so once we leave a property, it’s neatly swept

and ready for sale.’

CleverClear will visit your property and provide a free

assessment and quote for your house clearance,

and they will take care to follow your requirements

exactly.

DECLUTTERING FOR

DOWNSIZING

While for most of our early homeowning years

we’re looking for the next home up – one with

more space, room for children, entertaining, a

home office – there comes a time when we’re

actually ready to downsize. Or perhaps I should

rephrase that – we’re at a lifestage where

downsizing makes logical sense, but emotionally,

well, maybe we’re not quite ready.

We see many clients come to us, looking to

move out of the family home now that the children

have flown the nest and there are just too

many rarely used rooms. Some come almost

with a feeling of being under duress, while

some come with a light and positive approach,

ready to find a new nest and start diverting

their income to stuff more fun than huge heating

bills and council tax charges.

Why are some ‘ready’, and some not so much?

I think it lies in the stage of acceptance they

have reached in their minds. Our homes are

so important to us – it’s where we have loved,

laughed, made memories, felt safe, entertained

friends, created spaces we’re proud of and

deeply comfortable in. Letting go of all of this

isn’t something that just happens overnight, it’s

a process of acknowledgement, of preparing

for change and readying oneself emotionally

and physically for that change.

The house hunters most ready to move, the

ones who I can see are comfortable with putting

their home on the market and being open

to a new home themselves, are those people

who have started the downsizing process long

before they actually start to house hunt. How –

by decluttering. And I know this because I can

see it when we visit their home to value it, and

when they tell me. Valuing a home where the

homeowner says: “oh, I don’t know how I shall

get all my furniture and things into a smaller

space” always rings an alarm bell. A home

where I am told “oh, we’ve cleared out so much

stuff already” indicates a mind on the move,

creating a distance between the home they are

in now to allow for falling in love with a new

place.

There are multiple decluttering methods people

use, from bringing in an expert to help you to

doing it yourself using one of the many methods

you can find online. Here are two DIY

approaches I know our clients have found most

workable,

Swedish Death Cleaning

I know, me too! The first time I heard this expression

I was a little horrified, but actually it’s

a very sensible approach to decluttering and

maintaining a simpler existence and has no

direct correlation with your likely lifespan left

on earth. It was developed by a Swedish writer

Margerita Magnusson, in her book The Gentle

Art of Swedish Death Cleaning and in short, it’s

about decluttering your home to remove all

non-essential items so your loved ones don’t

have any added stress after you’re gone. By

doing this yourself, you get to decide what’s

most necessary in your home, what items

hold memories that only have relevance to

30 JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK

you and therefore can be let go. It can include

everything from old photo albums to fridge

magnets to books to clothes to furniture.

How to do it: the guidance is that you go roomby-room

and look at everything you’re hanging

on to and ask yourself why. The general rule is

that you start in larger rooms and with larger

items and work your way down to the small,

sentimental pieces. Start in the loft – that place

you cram so much stuff because you can’t just

throw away memories, but they don’t fit elsewhere

in your home. Suitcases of baby clothes

you haven’t looked at for 25 years; your old

books and notes from university (my mother

kept mine, I have no idea why, we found them

when she was downsizing…); items from previous

homes that never really fitted here but you

kept ‘just in case…’; etc.

Get rid of any duplicates – so maybe hang

on to one onesie, but let the rest go – and

keep only what actively makes your life more

comfortable. They very act of making these

decisions, of recognising that you don’t need

everything you have held onto over the years,

then serves to help start creating the mental

space you need to make that downsizing decision

with heart, as well as mind.

The KonMari Method

A little like Swedish Death Cleaning, KonMari

recognises that there is often power in the stuff

we keep hold of. Created by Marie Kondo, it’s a

way to declutter your entire home in a category

by category approach, rather than room-byroom.

The categories are: clothes, books, paper,

komono (miscellaneous items) and sentimental

items. You start with clothes and progress to

sentimental items because the easier categories

to declutter come first, so by the time

you reach the last, hardest category, you have

developed a greater understanding of what you

should and can lose, and what you can keep.

She says you should only keep items that spark

joy: “When something sparks joy, you should

feel a little thrill, as if the cells in your body are

slowly rising. When you hold something that

doesn’t bring you joy, however, you will notice

that your body feels heavier.”

It’s an emotional approach to decluttering, but

then, downsizing is an emotional decision as

much as it is a practical one, so while you are

clearing space in your home and keeping only

what you know you will need and that brings

joy, you are readying yourself to move on, taking

only what is truly important with you.

Finally, decluttering in advance of putting your

house on the market is always a good idea.

People viewing a potential new home want to

see just that – its potential. Overflowing cupboards,

busy kitchen work surfaces, a stacked

high home office, a cellar or loft jammed full

of stuff; it’s hard to project your own life into

someone else’s crowded home, so clear the

space and let them see the joy your old home

might bring to their future.

GANNON WORKS ARCHITECTS

UNLOCKING SPACE AND

VALUE WITH A LOFT

CONVERSION

A loft conversion is one of the most effective

ways to add both space and value to a home,

and Gannon Works specialise in making it happen

with style. A recent project in Heaton Chapel

shows just how transformative this can be.

The owners of a detached Arts & Crafts property

wanted to turn their unused box room into a

practical family space. Gannon Works delivered

a clever loft conversion, raising the roof slightly,

switching to a gable-end design and adding

three rear dormers. The result was two generous

bedrooms and a full bathroom that feel completely

in tune with the original house.

Every detail was carefully planned, from securing

full planning permission to selecting sympathetic

materials such as rosemary tiles and zinc finishes.

The project ran smoothly, finishing on time and

within budget — proof of the team’s thoughtful,

hands-on approach.

As Gannon Works put it, “Most British homes

have more potential than you think.” Whether

you own a detached, semi or terraced property,

their team can help you unlock hidden space and

reimagine your home.

AREA GUIDE:

WHALLEY RANGE

Whalley Range, just two miles southwest of Manchester

city centre, is one of the city’s earliest suburbs.

Originally developed in the 19th century by local

businessman Samuel Brooks as “a desirable estate

for gentlemen and their families,” it still retains much

of its historic character. Wide, tree-lined streets and

elegant Victorian and Edwardian homes give the area

a distinctive feel, though many of the larger properties

have since been converted into flats. Alongside these

period houses are newer developments, terraces and

semis that broaden the choice for today’s residents.

Community and Lifestyle

Whalley Range has grown into a lively, multicultural

neighbourhood with a strong community ethos. Local

groups such as the Whalley Range Community Forum

and Friends of Manley Park organise a wide variety of

events and activities, including an annual festival that

brings residents together. The area has a number of

primary schools and four secondary schools — William

Hulme, St Bede’s College, Hartley College and Whalley

Range High School for Girls — making it a practical

choice for families. Shops range from a Tesco and

Co-op to smaller independent and international food

stores, reflecting the suburb’s diversity.

Parks and Green Spaces

One of the highlights of Whalley Range is Alexandra

Park, a 60-acre Victorian park first opened in 1868. A

recent £5 million restoration has transformed it with

new planting, improved pathways, a community café

and sports facilities including tennis courts and a

cricket square. The park’s restored Pavilion and lake

area provide a focal point for the community. Manley

Park, a smaller but much-loved green space, also

serves the area, while Longford Park in neighbouring

Stretford is within easy reach and offers further leisure

facilities.

Living in Whalley Range

With excellent transport links into Manchester and

nearby suburbs like Chorlton and Didsbury, Whalley

Range is popular with commuters, families and young

professionals. Regular bus services run into the city

centre, while Metrolink stops at Chorlton, Firswood

and St Werburgh’s Road are all close by. Property

prices are generally lower than in Chorlton or Didsbury,

making the area attractive to buyers and renters

seeking value as well as potential for future growth.

Its mix of historic character, community energy and

ongoing investment ensures Whalley Range remains a

distinctive and appealing part of South Manchester.

40 JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK

AREA GUIDE: STRETFORD

Stretford is a well-connected suburb just four miles

from Manchester city centre, making it popular with

commuters and young professionals. The A56 provides

a direct route into the city, while the Metrolink

stop links Stretford with nearby areas such as Chorlton,

Sale, Whalley Range and Altrincham. For those

heading further afield, the M60 is close by, and cycling

routes into the city make an eco-friendly commute an

easy option.

Town Centre and Shopping

Stretford is undergoing major regeneration, with a

multi-million-pound masterplan to revitalise Stretford

Mall and create a new waterfront destination along

the Bridgewater Canal. Already, the town centre

has a lively mix of shops, from high street names to

independent retailers, and a growing food and drink

scene. Inside the Mall, you’ll find independents such as

Longford Tap, Brewchimp, The Hive and the family-run

Stretford Canteen, alongside well-known brands.

Stretford Foodhall has quickly become a local favourite,

combining a bar, coffee shop, pop-up street food

vendors and a convenience store in a relaxed, family

and dog-friendly setting.

Green Spaces and Community

Despite its urban convenience, Stretford is rich in

green space. The Bridgewater Canal and the banks

of the River Mersey provide scenic walks, while local

parks include Moss Park, Hoop Park, Stretford Meadows

and Turn Moss Fields. The standout is Longford

Park, Trafford’s largest municipal park, which features

community allotments, a wildlife garden, a café, and a

popular pet’s corner. Nearby Victoria Park also offers

tennis and basketball courts, two play areas and a

community-run tea room, making it a hub for families.

Community life is a key part of Stretford’s character.

Stretford Public Hall is co-owned and managed by residents,

hosting regular events and classes that bring

people together. The neighbourhood has a strong reputation

for being friendly and welcoming, with locals

actively involved in protecting and celebrating their

community.

Living in Stretford

The area offers a range of housing, from affordable

terraced homes and semi-detached properties to new

apartment developments aimed at young professionals.

Families benefit from good schools, with Moss

Park and Victoria Park primaries rated “outstanding”

by Ofsted, and both Stretford High and Lostock High

rated “good.” Stretford Grammar also holds a strong

reputation.

With its excellent transport links, affordable homes,

thriving food and drink scene, and ambitious regeneration

plans, Stretford is an appealing choice for a wide

range of people. For first-time buyers and investors in

particular, the combination of green space, community

spirit and ongoing development makes it an area full

of potential.

WHY PADEL IS TAKING

MANCHESTER BY STORM

We’ve already talked about the benefits of exercise for

both body and mind, and how getting active outdoors

in cold weather can be especially powerful. Running,

cycling and team sports are great options, but there’s

another sport that’s booming right now. It’s fun, easy to

pick up, can be played outside, and only needs two people.

Welcome to padel.

So, what is padel?

Padel is a racquet sport that blends elements of tennis

and squash. It’s played on an enclosed court, usually with

glass or mesh walls, which are used in play as well as the

net. Courts are slightly smaller than tennis courts, making

the game more tactical than physical, with an emphasis

on angles and strategy over power.

The racquets are short, solid and perforated, while the

balls are similar to tennis balls but with lower pressure,

meaning they bounce lower and slower. The result is a

sport that’s dynamic and social, with longer rallies and

plenty of action without requiring years of practice to

get good. Padel is probably the most rapidly growing

game in Europe, even though it’s been around since the

late 1960s. But why?

Padel is quick and

easy to learn

It’s said that everybody can learn padel in less than an

hour, to a reasonable competency level, whereas tennis

can take months or even years to achieve a ‘good game’.

This means that partnering up isn’t so challenging, and

it’s the perfect sport for a couple to take up together

where there are differing levels of fitness and experience.

42 JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK

Quick to learn

Most players can get to a

decent level within an hour.

Unlike tennis, which can take

years to master, padel is accessible

from the first game,

making it easy for couples or

friends of different abilities to

play together.

Boosts your

mood

Like any competitive sport,

padel gets your adrenaline

pumping and raises your

energy levels. It also triggers

dopamine — the “reward

hormone” — especially when

playing with friends. Many say

this combination makes the

sport addictive in the best

possible way.

Good for

your brain

Using the walls as part of the

game means you’re constantly

calculating angles and anticipating

bounces. The slower

pace compared to squash

or tennis allows longer rallies,

giving your brain as much of

a workout as your body.

Above all,

it’s fun

Padel is played for enjoyment

as much as competition.

Because skill levels even out

quickly, the game feels inclusive

and relaxed, with plenty

of laughter and less pressure

to win. That’s a big reason

why players say they’re

hooked from their very first

session.

TOP TIPS

THE FIVE TOP

DIY FAILS TO AVOID

Do you DIY? I do and I don’t. I dabble, shall we

say. But as the weather brightens and the big

four-day weekend of Easter approaches, the

temptation always rises to do something big.

Maybe re-hang that door that’s catching and

irritating me.

Or maybe fix the wonky fencing in the back

garden. Like many men, I love power tools. I am

also well aware that power tools can be extremely

dangerous in the wrong hands, and much as

it pains me to admit it, my hands are very much

the wrong hands when it comes to many power

tools. Some things are definitely best left to the

experts, I say.

However, thousands of less self-aware homeowners

will be reaching for their battery packs,

all fired up and ready to take on jobs that need

doing, without really thinking about who should

really be doing them.

It seems that the rise of TikTok DIY tutorials and

YouTube home hacks has led to an overconfidence

epidemic among homeowners. Admiral

Home Insurance reports a 13 per cent

increase in DIY-related claims over the past year,

with 75 percent of cases linked to decorating

accidents.

Recent research by Direct Line insurance has revealed

that 82 per cent of UK homeowners have

attempted DIY projects in the past two years,

and 22 percent of those DIY-ers have then gone

on to call in a professional to repair their mistakes,

with an average repair bill of just short of

£1,000 – adding up to a staggering £539 million

in extra household expenses each year.

Unsurprisingly, 90 percent of tradespeople surveyed

reported a rise in calls from people who

need help from a professional to fix or finish a

DIY project that has gone wrong. Half of tradespeople

say they get called to the rescue at least

twice a week.

44 JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK

Here are the top

five DIY tasks you

should avoid

Electrical work

This one is perhaps a bit of an obvious

one, but with the rise of DIY

videos on social media – YouTube

to TikTok – it seems many people

are a little overconfident about their

skills. Attempting electrical repairs or

rewiring without expertise can result

in serious injury, or worse. You could

completely blow your electrics, or

even cause a house fire.

Plumbing

From replacing pipework to fixing

leaks, amateur plumbing can lead

to catastrophic water damage. One

wrong move can turn a small repair

into a costly disaster – fixing a burst

pipe costs a whopping average of

£2,023 – plus then of course you

have to replace anything irreparably

damaged.

Structural alterations

Please don’t go knocking down walls

or making alterations without professional

assessment. Any major changes

you make could weaken your

home’s structural integrity, resulting

in potential collapse.

Floor sanding

Renting a floor sander might seem

like a cost-effective way to refresh

your wooden floors, but if you don’t

really know what you’re doing you

can create deep grooves, uneven

surfaces, or even structural damage

to older flooring. You may end up

having to replace one or more floorboards

if you get it wrong, and at an

average of £80 per square meter for

hardwood boards, plus the cost of a

tradesperson, that’s a costly error.

Painting and decorating

This is the most common DIY job of

all, one attempted by more homeowners

than any other job and

indeed is one that most people

manage just fine. If you’re going for

it yourself this Easter, watch all the

YouTube tutorials – repainting walls,

especially cutting into ceilings and

around skirting boards is not as easy

as it looks in the Dulux adverts!

OLIVER MARTIN IS

RAISING MONEY FOR

THE CHRISTIE CHARITY

Last season at West Didsbury & Chorlton FC, we were

extremely saddened at the passing of a long term friend,

teammate and incredible human being, Stephen Piggott,

or “Piggo” as many knew him as.

Piggo was dealing with Kidney Cancer, whilst bravely

maintaining his duties with both work, football and family…all

which he loved so very dearly.

Cancer is sadly, something that will affect millions of

people every year, whether that is those closet to you, or

even the friend of a friends relative. My own Dad bravely

fought against Prostate Cancer, so this is extremely close

to my heart.

The remainder of the season, along with this season has

not been the same without Piggo. Therefore to commemorate

both him, and the millions of other people

that suffer from variations of Cancer, I am partnering

up with my club player sponsor JP & Brimelow, to raise

further money for The Christie’s Charity.

To do so, for every clean sheet that I keep, I will be donating

£30 to The Christie Charity. JP & Brimelow will be

matching this total throughout the season.

If you would like to contribute (whether that be through

matching the donation), or kindly donating anything that

you can, this would be greatly appreciated.

ALICE – THE LOCAL

BEHIND STRETFORD

CONFIDENTIAL

I’m Alice, the (shy!) face behind Stretford Confidential.

I started the page simply to keep track of all the good

connect people, spotlight independent businesses and

show that even if you’re from abroad, you can play an

active role and feel part of the community.

account, no plan to monetise, no strategy – just a way to

stay on top of what was happening and help others do

the same.

Then Covid hit. Weirdly, that’s when things levelled up.

Stretfordians came closer – walking Vicky Park, talking,

planning and dreaming up new ways to make the town

better. After lockdown the area buzzed with markets,

festivals, gigs and art pop-ups. I’d just had a baby, but I

didn’t want the page to fade away. To keep it manageable,

I switched to mostly Instagram Stories and monthly

highlights – a rolling calendar of what’s on.

People seem to appreciate it – views are solid, followers

keep growing, and it’s giving visibility to local projects,

events and independent ventures. Running the account

has nudged me out into the community too. I’ve met so

many people I wouldn’t have otherwise, while Coolo our

dog and little Freddie (aged four) are often recognised

around town long before I am!

Looking ahead, I want @stretford_confidential to keep

shouting about the great stuff happening here, to give

back to the community and show that Stretford is open

to everyone. I’d also love more interaction with followers

– swapping tips, sharing stories, and collaborating simply

because connections are what make this place special.

Originally from Italy, I moved to Manchester in 2012

straight after uni and settled in Stretford in 2015. Back

then the area looked very different, but you could feel a

shift in the air – a steady build-up of energy and ideas.

Over the past decade, so much has happened: community

crowdfunding in Victoria Park, The Mall reshaping

itself, the Public Hall coming back to life, and a wave of

independent businesses shaping Stretford’s revival.

Bit by bit I put down roots – starting a family, getting to

know familiar faces and their stories. By 2019, I didn’t just

live here – I felt part of it. That’s when I created @stretford_confidential.

At first it was just a simple Instagram

AREA GUIDE: CHORLTON

& CHORLTON GREEN

Chorlton, just three miles southwest of Manchester

city centre, is one of the city’s most desirable suburbs.

Known for its leafy streets, large Victorian and

Edwardian homes, and vibrant mix of shops, bars

and cafés, it blends historic character with a modern,

creative spirit. Once a Lancashire village on the border

with Cheshire, Chorlton became part of Manchester in

1904, but it still retains a distinct identity that draws

families, young professionals and long-term residents

alike.

Shopping and lifestyle

Chorlton is a haven for independent businesses. Food

lovers can pick up fresh seafood from Out of the Blue,

artisan cheese from Chorlton Cheesemongers, and organic

produce from the much-loved Unicorn Grocery.

There are also boutique clothes stores, gift shops, art

galleries and the long-established Chorlton Bookshop,

while the monthly Maker’s Market adds to the area’s

strong community feel. For drinks, specialist wine and

beer retailers such as The Epicurean, Tiny’s Tipples

and Epicerie Ludo keep locals well supplied.

The bar and café culture is equally impressive. Locals

argue Chorlton is one of the best places in Greater

Manchester for a pint, with its own annual beer and

cider festival and pubs with welcoming gardens. Popular

bars like Henry C, Mary and Archie and Laundrette

ensure cocktail drinkers are just as well catered for.

The food scene is diverse, with options ranging from

tapas to Turkish, Tibetan and beyond. Beech Road and

Chorlton Green are particularly popular areas, with

colourful shops, pubs and restaurants that create a

lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

Green spaces and community

Despite its buzz, Chorlton is rich in green space.

Chorlton Water Park and Chorlton Ees Nature Reserve

are favourites for walkers, cyclists and families, offering

lakeside paths, play areas and plenty of room for

picnics. Nearby Longford Park and Sale Water Park

provide further sports and leisure facilities. Community

allotments and green projects add to the suburb’s

strong sense of environmental awareness.

Cultural life is also vibrant, with annual arts and book

festivals, yoga and mindfulness workshops, and a

history of attracting creatives — from The Bee Gees to

Badly Drawn Boy. This bohemian, open-minded spirit

has become part of Chorlton’s reputation and appeal.

Living in Chorlton

The housing market offers a wide mix, from large Victorian

terraces with gardens to smaller family homes,

all supported by good schools rated “good” or “outstanding”

by Ofsted. Transport links are excellent, with

regular buses and three Metrolink stops — Chorlton,

St Werburgh’s Road and Firswood — making the city

centre just 15 minutes away.

With its blend of period architecture, independent

spirit, lively café culture and abundant green spaces,

Chorlton has become one of Manchester’s most

sought-after suburbs. For those looking for a neighbourhood

that feels both distinctively local and well

connected to the city, it’s easy to see why Chorlton

and Chorlton Green remain so popular.

JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK 49

AREA GUIDE: WITHINGTON

Withington is one of Manchester’s most characterful

suburbs, known for its mix of history, community spirit

and modern city living. The area combines heritage

sites and independent culture with plenty of green

space, making it popular with residents and visitors

alike. Whether you are exploring for the day or considering

a move, Withington has much to offer.

Things to do

Withington Baths is a standout landmark. Saved and

restored by local residents, it is Manchester’s last Edwardian

pool and now serves as both a fitness centre

and a community hub. Alongside swimming, there is a

gym, fitness classes and even co-working space, all set

within a building that still retains its original tiling and

stained glass.

Creativity is another hallmark of the area. Withington

Walls is a community street art project that has

brought colour and character to the suburb. Murals

and artworks by local artists cover walls and shutters,

turning a walk through the streets into an open-air

gallery. A mapped trail makes it easy to explore, and

nearby Burton Road Brewing Co. has even featured

the designs on its beer labels.

For green space, Withington is well served. Platt Fields

Park has a boating lake, sports facilities and a thriving

market garden run with sustainability in mind. Marie

Louise Gardens is a smaller, peaceful retreat with

shaded paths and lawns, while Chorlton Water Park,

just a short distance away, offers a large lake, cycle

paths and birdwatching spots.

Food and drink

Withington has built a strong food and drink scene.

Toast is a cosy café known for brunch, coffee and pastries,

and is a popular meeting point for locals. Thyme

Out Food Co. focuses on fresh, locally sourced dishes

and is ideal for brunch or takeaway. For more formal

dining, The Lime Tree has long been celebrated for its

modern British cuisine and welcoming atmosphere,

making it a go-to for special occasions.

Living in Withington

The suburb appeals to a wide range of people, from

students and first-time buyers to families and investors.

Housing is varied, with traditional terraces, family

homes and shared houses. Recent selective licensing

has helped raise housing standards, particularly in

HMOs, and property demand is growing. A recent £1

million home sale points to increasing investment and

development in the area.

Location is another draw. Withington is well connected

to Manchester city centre and sits close to West

Didsbury and Didsbury Village, both popular destinations

in their own right. Add in good local schools,

strong community projects and a lively mix of cafés,

pubs and cultural initiatives, and it is clear why Withington

continues to grow as one of Manchester’s most

desirable suburbs.

MAKE THE MOST OF

YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

Top of my wish list when house hunting? A south-facing garden. It’s one of the few things

you can’t change once you move in – and when the Manchester sunshine makes an appearance,

you want to soak up every minute.

The dream? Bifold doors that open onto a

patio, lush greenery, a chilled drink in hand, and

the kids playing nearby. Afternoon brunch flows

from the kitchen to the garden, evenings end

around a fire pit with marshmallows (big and

small kids included), and soft lighting sets the

tone.

And here’s the good news: you don’t need the

‘perfect’ garden to achieve this. With thoughtful

outdoor styling and clever design tricks, you

can create a garden that feels like an extension

of your home.

Here are five expert design ideas to help you

create a beautiful, feel-good outdoor living

space:

1. OUTDOOR FURNITURE THAT

MATCHES YOUR INDOOR STYLE

Think of your garden as another room. Your

outdoor furniture should reflect the same vibe

as your interiors – whether you lean towards relaxed

boho, clean lines, or cosy comfort. When

the styles flow together, it all feels a lot more

intentional.

Quick tip: Modular sofas are great for flexible

entertaining and can be styled with throws and

cushions just like your living room.

2. USE AN INDOOR-OUTDOOR RUG

TO GROUND THE SPACE

Rugs aren’t just for inside. A good indoor-outdoor

rug can instantly pull everything together

and help zone your seating or dining space.

Plus, there are loads of washable, weather-proof

options around now, so you don’t need

to worry about a splash of rain.

Quick tip: Choose something that echoes your

interior style – think colour, texture or pattern –

to tie it all in.

3. ADD CUSHIONS AND

THROWS FOR COMFORT

Cushions and throws bring colour, texture, and

that relaxed, lived-in feel we all love – while

making your outdoor space genuinely comfy

for guests (or a morning coffee in the sun). Just

make sure they’re made from water-resistant or

UV-friendly fabrics so they can handle a Manchester

downpour.

Quick tip: Think woven textures, outdoor

linen-look fabrics, and a mix of colours for a

layered, lived-in look.

4. CREATE MOOD WITH LIGHTING

From golden hour garden parties to quiet

nights under the stars, lighting transforms an

outdoor space. Use solar lights, string lights,

lanterns or a fire pit to build ambience and

make the most of your garden after dark.

Quick tip: Layer your lighting – string lights

overhead, lanterns or candles on the table,

and low lights around the edges for depth and

atmosphere.

5. BRING LIFE WITH GREENERY

Plants soften edges, add colour and bring

charm and character. You don’t need loads –

just a few pots with your favourite flowers or

herbs can completely change the feel of your

outdoor space.

Quick tip: Try grouping pots together for more

impact. Think potted olive trees, wildflowers, or

lavender for a fresh, summery feel.

LET’S DESIGN A HOME AND

GARDEN THAT FEELS LIKE YOU

Whether you’re staying, selling, or searching for

your next space – beautiful, functional home

and garden design can add so much joy to

daily life. And with a few simple updates, it’s

totally achievable.

Visit Spaces by Kelly to explore my design

services, or email me to chat about how we can

transform your indoor-outdoor space – ready

IDENTITY CHECKS WITH

LIFETIME LEGAL

COMPLETE YOUR ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING

VERIFICATION AND ENJOY FREE MEMBERSHIP

BENEFITS WITH OUR PARTNER, LIFETIME LEGAL.

74 JPANDBRIMELOW.CO.UK

To get your sale or purchase underway, we must confirm your

identity and, if selling, property ownership to comply with HMRC

legislation and prevent criminal activity. These legally mandated

checks are carried out by our partner Lifetime Legal, for which

there is a nominal charge of £60 (including VAT), which you pay

directly to them.

Step One

We will schedule a two-hour time frame for the Lifetime Legal team to call you at a

convenient day and time. Please keep your smartphone and two forms of ID, such as a

passport and driving licence, nearby. If you're selling a property, they will also need to

verify your property's ownership with the Land Registry.

Step Two

After the call with Lifetime Legal, each person will receive a text or email with a link to

download the Credas app to verify their ID. If you don't have a smartphone, Lifetime

Legal will guide you through alternative methods. You may also be asked to provide

further documentation, depending on the sale or purchase circumstances.

Step Three

After your identity and, if selling, property ownership, have been verified, we can

move forward with your property transaction. As part of the service, you will be

given a 3-month free Lifetime Legal membership, which comes with free legal

advice, a standard or mirror Will, and Mover Protection*. If your transaction falls

through,

Mover Protection could pay out up to £720 to sellers and £1,850 to buyers**.

*These benefits and membership are offered by Lifetime Legal, and you are under no obligation to

accept them if you do not wish to.

**Please note that terms and conditions apply.

AUTEUR

STORE

Situated on the popular independent hub of Beech

Road. Auteur store opened in October 2023. The store

was opened by local resident Alex Otterwell who has

over 20 years experience in the men’s fashion industry.

One of the key visions for the store is to work with

brands who celebrate slow production and clothing

that is made to last. Alex says ” One of our specialities

is Japanese Selvedge Denim. The brands we work with

manufacture denim in the traditional methods that

Levis & Lee used Pre 1970, back when jeans were made

to last ten years not ten months.”

All jeans come with free alterations, to ensure the perfect

fit. Everyone is welcome to browse in a no pressure

relaxed environment but for those who require the

team offers a personal shopping and styling service to

help you find that perfect outfit or a style refresh.

Hope to see you soon.
