SD2 Mentorship

Shapes STEM Futures

San Diego Squared (SD2) is shaping

the future of STEM by centering

mentorship as the key to unlocking

opportunity and belonging for

underrepresented students. Through its

signature programs, Squared Fellows

and Squared Scholars, SD2 combines

guidance, exposure, and financial support to ensure

students not only enter but thrive in STEM pathways.

The Squared Fellows Program introduces high school

students to a year-long, rotation-based mentorship

experience. Fellows meet monthly with mentors,

participate in professional development workshops,

and visit leading STEM companies across San Diego.

These opportunities help students envision career

paths, build networks, and gain the confidence to

pursue higher education.

The Squared Scholars Program extends this support

into college, providing multi-year scholarships

alongside mentorship and career exploration.

Each Scholar is paired with a mentor who offers

guidance and encouragement throughout their

academic journey. By reducing financial barriers and

strengthening personal connections, Scholars are able

to focus on growth, achievement, and their long-term

career goals.

For SD2, mentorship is more than advice. It is

advocacy, access, and affirmation that students belong

in STEM. By cultivating strong relationships between

students and professionals, SD2 equips young people

with tools, networks, and confidence that extend far

beyond the classroom.

Together, Fellows and Scholars form a growing

community of aspiring scientists, engineers,

and innovators who carry forward the lessons of

mentorship. With each success story, SD2 continues

to demonstrate the transformative power of pairing

opportunity with guidance, ensuring a stronger STEM

workforce for the future.

Growing Goodness

JESSICA FINK AND THE RISE OF LITTLE MENSCHES

Ten years ago,

Professor Jessica

Fink went for a

run through her

Carmel Valley

neighborhood

and found

herself thinking

about her son.

“Leo was about

five,” she recalls.

“I remember

thinking, he

has no idea how

good he has it.

How do I teach

him to give back

at this age?”

That question

sparked

something

bigger than she

ever imagined:

Little

Jessica Fink and Family

Mensches, a

community service program for children ages 4 to 8.

Co-founded by Fink, along with Judy Nemzer and

Vivien Dean who also lead the Shalom Baby program

at the Lawrence Family JCC in La Jolla, Little

Mensches invites young children and their parents

into a life of empathy and action.

“We did not

even have a

budget,” Jessica

says. “We just

started calling

friends for

donations. We

thought 25

people might

come. Instead,

150 children

and their

parents showed

up. We knew

then there was

a need.”

In its first

decade, Little

Mensches

has reached

hundreds of

families. Events

include packing

school supplies

for underserved

children,

creating

activity kits

for patients at

Rady Children’s

Hospital,

writing letters

to U.S. troops and I.D.F. soldiers, assembling necessity

kits for people experiencing homelessness, and more.

“These kids are these learning that they matter. That

they can help. That they should.” Every event starts with

a circle of children where Jessica asks, “‘Can a kid be

a mensch?’ They shout back, ‘Yes!’ And they are right.

You do not need to be a grown-up to do good.”

14 OCTOBER 2025 | GBSAN.COM

Before there

was Little

Mensches,

there was

Shalom Baby,

founded by

Jean Gaylis,

a young

mother who

knew what

it felt like to

be isolated

and alone. “I

had nobody,”

Jean said.

“No family,

no friends,

and a husband

working seven

days a week.”

She asked:

What if no

Jewish parent

ever had to feel

that way again?

The answer

became Shalom

Baby, a beloved

program of

the Lawrence

Family JCC

that turns 25

this year. It begins with a thoughtful gift bag for new

parents. But the true gift is the connection that follows.

“Shalom Baby helped me find my people,” Jessica

Fink shared with GB Magazine. “When I walked into

my first meetup with a colicky baby and feeling like

a mess, I saw that everyone else was going through it

too. It made me feel less alone.”

For many families, Little Mensches plants the seeds of

lifelong generosity. After one event, when her son Leo

was about 6 years old, he turned to his mom and said,

“I just feel like there is so much more to do.” For Fink,

it was a moment of deep clarity. “That is when I knew

it was working,” she says. “It was not just something

we did. It was something he felt.” Years later, Leo is still

volunteering at the San Diego Rescue Mission.

To Fink, that

is the heart of

tikkun olam

- repairing

the world.

“I cannot fix

everything,”

she says.

“But I can

help a child

feel proud

of doing

something

good. I

can teach

the next

generation

to carry that

forward.”

For Fink, the

ultimate goal

is simple: to

normalize

community

service so

completely that

it becomes “just

something kids

do, like soccer

practice or

piano lessons.”

To get there,

they need support from donors who believe in early

childhood as a critical window for shaping values and

from philanthropists who understand that big change

often starts with small hands. Fink smiles, “And it

is true. These kids are building a better world. One

mitzvah at a time.”

9/11 First Responder Challenge

HONORING FIRST RESPONDERS’ LEGACY

On September

11, 2025, Chula

Vista and

surrounding

South Bay

communities

came

together to honor first responders

and commemorate the legacy of

September 11, 2001, at the Seven

Mile Casino 9/11 First Responder

Challenge. Nearly fifty local

businesses delivered appreciation

meals to fire stations in Chula Vista,

Bonita, and Imperial Beach, as well

as Chula Vista Police Headquarters.

Meals were provided during breakfast, lunch, and

dinner, giving community members the opportunity

Masis Kevorkian, Chula Vista Chief of Police Roxana

Kennedy and Chula Vista Mayor John McCann

to share moments of gratitude with first responders

whenever their schedules allowed.

The event took place as the nation reflected on

the 24th anniversary of 9/11 and the immense

bravery of first responders. On that tragic day in

2001, 441 first responders lost their lives while

heroically saving others. The Seven Mile Casino

9/11 First Responder Challenge served not only as

a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice,

but also as a celebration of the ongoing dedication

of local first responders who continue to protect

and serve South County communities.

Throughout the day, twelve fire stations and

the police headquarters welcomed residents,

volunteers, and community leaders, creating

an atmosphere of shared respect, reflection,

and connection. Families and neighbors

joined in the effort, reinforcing the bonds that

for the men and

their lives to public

was felt in every

station; from the

early morning breakfast gatherings to the evening

dinners, where stories were exchanged and moments

of recognition were shared.

Masis Kevorkian, a longtime organizer of the event,

reflected on its significance: “Every year, we come

together not just to remember, but to act. It is about

showing our city and our first responders that we stand

with them - that their sacrifices are seen, valued, and

honored - and that our community remains strong, no

matter the challenges.”

Nearly fifty local businesses contributed to the success

of the event, providing meals, volunteering at stations,

and helping coordinate activities. Their participation

ensured that every first responder felt recognized and

appreciated. The connections formed during the day

highlighted not only the courage of first responders,

but also the generosity and unity of South County

residents.

As the day concluded, participants gathered to reflect

proved to be more than a day of tribute - it was a

celebration of South County’s resilience, compassion,

the event reinforced the enduring legacy of September

recognition, and community spirit are essential to

honoring the heroes among us.

Cover Story

Leading with Heart

Debbie Deverett delivers remarks

during her induction as Women’s

Philanthropy Board Chair

Meet the New Faces of Federation

Leadership

Jewish communities everywhere

are facing rising antisemitism and

the need for deeper connection.

Jewish Federation of San Diego is

responding with purpose, focusing

on education, leadership, and legacy

to build a stronger future.

In 2025, Federation mobilized

$19 million in total philanthropic

impact, anchored by nearly

$11 million raised through the

nonprofit’s annual campaign.

This historic milestone reflects

the generosity of San Diego’s

Jewish community and sets up

the work ahead.

Leading Federation’s next chapter

are Jeff Schindler, newly appointed

Board Chair, and Debbie Deverett,

Women’s Philanthropy Board Chair,

who bring a renewed spirit of

partnership and purpose to Jewish

San Diego.

Legacy Meets Leadership

For Jeff Schindler, becoming

Board Chair was the natural next

step in his leadership journey.

A San Diego native and son of

Holocaust Survivors Rose and Max

Schindler, his personal history has

shaped his passion for education,

remembrance, and community.

“When we stand together as a

community and as part of the global

Jewish family, we can affect lasting

change,” Schindler shared with GB

Magazine.

That belief guided his leadership

while serving as co-president

of Temple Emanu-El, where he

helped his congregation strengthen

connections across Jewish San

Diego. It also inspired his work

restoring San Diego’s original

1972 Holocaust monument, a

project he undertook to honor

local survivors and his parents.

The monument now resides

permanently at Federation’s San

Diego headquarters.

Today, Schindler’s vision includes

supporting the Legacy of Light

Goldberg Institute for Holocaust Education and its

upcoming mobile museum, which will bring Holocaust

education into local schools

and neighborhoods. He will

also assist in advancing The

Finest Community Coalition,

uniting synagogues, Jewish

agencies, and community

partners to confront

antisemitism and enhance

safety across San Diego.

“The work we do cannot be

weighed or measured,” added

Schindler. “It is profound, it

is powerful, and it is critical.”

Leading Women’s

Philanthropy

For Debbie Deverett,

leadership is rooted in

connection to community,

family, and shared values.

Her Federation journey

began in 1997 as a Lion

of Judah in Toronto and

continued after her move

to San Diego in 2009.

In 2018, she joined

the first cohort of the

Pauline Foster Women’s

Leadership Institute and

the Women’s Philanthropy Board,

where her passion for inspiring

generosity grew. Today, as Chair

of Women’s Philanthropy, she also

serves on Federation’s General and

Executive Boards.

Under her leadership, the Women’s

Philanthropy Board has created

more volunteer opportunities

that strengthen community

connection. Through donor events

and touchpoints, Deverett and her

team help Jewish women see the

impact of their giving. “Women

Jeff Schindler and his mother for

the rededication of San Diego’s

Holocaust monument in 2021

are at the heart of giving,” shared Deverett. “Driven

by equality, well-being, impact, and connection, they

account for nearly half of

all charitable contributions

nationwide.”

Schindler toasts to the future of

Federation’s Holocaust education

efforts during the annual, FED360 Gala

Deverett alongside Federation President & CEO Heidi

Gantwerk (middle) and Lions of Judah Luncheon

Co-Chairs Laurie Hoshaw, Jill Beck and Melissa Brill

Looking ahead, she is

helping launch Kesher, a

new engagement initiative

designed to build stronger

relationships among women

in the Jewish community.

“I am fortunate to be able

to give to Federation, but

I have received even more

in return,” she added. “The

friendships I have made

have been one of the most

meaningful outcomes

of being part of a bigger

community.”

Shaping a Stronger

Future

For Schindler and

Deverett, leadership

reflects a deep faith in

what the community

can become. Together,

they demonstrate that

Jewish life flourishes

when memory is

preserved and generosity

embraced. “Joy is an act of

spiritual resistance,” teaches Rabbi

Sharon Brous. Federation carries

that spirit forward -creating

opportunities to celebrate, give,

and build resilience.

With strong leadership,

Federation is ensuring that joy,

remembrance, and belonging

guide the generations to come.

The Casitas in

Historic Rancho Santa Fe

Appleby Family Group

Tucked into the rolling hills of North

County San Diego, The Inn at Rancho

Santa Fe is a timeless escape that almost

100 years since its beginnings, remains

the centerpiece of our community.

With roots reaching back to 1922, this

charming retreat began as a bold vision

by the Santa Fe Land Improvement Company and

Lilian Rice to create a community.

Rice’s first creation was a cozy guesthouse called La

Morada, built to welcome potential land buyers with

style and grace. That little building, full of character

and charm, would eventually grow into The Inn at

Rancho Santa Fe. More than just a hotel, it set the

architectural tone for the entire town, which became

one of California’s first master-planned communities

with a unified design aesthetic.

Fast forward to 1958, when hotelier Stephen Wheeler

Royce bought The Inn after selling the iconic

Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. He moved his family

onto the 23-acre property and made it their personal

mission to preserve the Inn’s magic and rich history.

For the next 50+ years, the Royce family welcomed

guests as fabulous stewards of this legacy property. In

2012, The Inn passed into the hands of JMI Realty.

For over a decade, JMI served as local owners and

thoughtful stewards of the hotel, maintaining its

historic charm, and honoring its past while exploring

plans for its future.

In 2022, recognizing a unique opportunity to carry the

Inn’s legacy forward, JMI sold the hotel to renowned

designer and developer Steve Hermann, while holding

onto an 8-acre piece of the property and 13 homes

known as the Inn Cottages. With a shared passion

for architecture, hospitality, and an understanding

of the Inn’s history, Hermann brought fresh vision to

this beloved landmark - one that honors Lilian Rice’s

original spirit while embracing what’s next.

And now, a new chapter is

beginning to take shape at what

was previously the Inn Cottages.

The Casitas at RSF

After over a decade of careful

planning, JMI’s vision for a new

residential enclave adjacent to the

Inn is coming to life. Introducing

The Casitas at RSF - a collection

of thirteen detached luxury homes

nestled just steps from the town

center and The Inn itself. This

new community will embody

understated elegance, a resort

lifestyle, and timeless design with a

nod to Lilian Rice’s original vision.

Five luxurious casitas have been

completely reimagined from the ground

up and offer design and architectural

brilliance with uncompromising quality.

Eight of the original Inn cottages remain

just as they were, offering homeowners a

rare opportunity to restore and personalize

their dream casita with approved plans.

These thirteen homes are being offered for

individual ownership for the first time ever.

The RSF Inn pool

Private yet connected, rooted in history

yet refreshed for today, The Casitas at

experienced. All homeowners

will have access to the Resort’s

amenities which include The Pool,

The Mug Maker’s Legacy

Stanley Papel - a smile, a mug and a legacy

Placed side-by-side, 300 million mugs

would cover more than 300 football

fields. That is the ultimate culmination

of merchandise produced by the

giftware company Stanley Papel and

his father built over 70 years. Their

business was built on creativity, hard

work, and a core belief to support others. “My dad

cared about people and was a really good person,”

Stanley says. Now, Stanley is channeling his father’s

giving spirit by creating a legacy of his own: a

charitable gift annuity with the Foundations of Sharp

HealthCare.

How Stanley’s legacy gift works

Stanley established a charitable gift annuity in

support of ENVISION: The Campaign for Sharp

HealthCare by donating shares of highly appreciated

stock. His gift will help expand facilities, advance

nationally recognized clinical programs and fund

innovative technology at Sharp Metropolitan Medical

Campus. “I feel so appreciative to Sharp,” he shared

with GB Magazine. “My doctors have been so

wonderful and have truly helped me, so it is my way

of paying it back.”

48 OCTOBER 2025 | GBSAN.COM

Sharp leaders honor Stanley for his legacy gift

“Stanley’s gift also provides him with several

tax benefits,” explains Linda Spuck, Chief

Gift Planning Officer. “Had Stanley sold his

appreciated stock, he would have paid tens

of thousands of dollars in capital gains tax.

By turning it into a charitable gift annuity,

he can see his donation in action and receive

high fixed-rate payments for the rest of his

life, some free from income tax. He also

received a substantial up-front charitable

deduction.”

Making his dad proud

Stanley’s generosity is deeply connected to his family

story. His dad, Phil, founded PAPEL Collectible

Mugs on Main Street at Disneyland when it opened

in 1955, soon expanding to The Queen Mary in Long

Beach. “We were decorating mugs 24 hours a day,” says

Stanley. “We couldn’t make them fast enough.” Over

seven decades, they sold hundreds of millions of mugs.

Stanley not only respected his dad’s business acumen

and work ethic, but also his giving spirit. “He set up

scholarships for his employees, and I admired that,”

Stanley recalls.

Gifts of appreciation

Stanley moved to San Diego during the pandemic,

and when he needed expert health care, he turned

Stanley was inspired by his father’s generosity

to Sharp. Grateful for the quality care he received,

Stanley wanted to show his appreciation. Stanley

initially made gifts in honor of his caregivers, but he

was excited when he learned he could make an even

greater difference through a charitable gift annuity. “I

feel so appreciative to Sharp,” Stanley says. “Sharp is

doing some exciting things, all to help other people.

This is my way of paying it forward.”

“Establishing a charitable gift annuity is a win-winwin,”

Stanley continues. “Sharp is a wonderful health

you are doing something good for other people at the

PROTECTING GRAY WHALES IN BAJA CALIFORNIA

BY: ANN WYCOFF

Gray Whale Spy-Hop with

WILDCOAST camp on the horizon

Each winter, thousands of gray whales

complete one of the longest mammal

migrations on Earth: 12,000 miles from

Alaska’s icy seas to the warm, shallow

lagoons of Baja California. At San Ignacio

Lagoon, mothers give birth, calves learn

to swim, and massive adults breach, spyhop,

and mate against a backdrop of stunning desert

mountains, giant sand dunes and blazing sunsets.

For reasons scientists still do not fully understand,

these leviathans sometimes seek human contact,

gliding toward small panga boats, even nudging

their calves forward as if to introduce them. It is an

encounter that feels almost miraculous- especially

considering these same whales were hunted nearly to

extinction a century ago.

A Victory for Conservation

In 2000, this sanctuary nearly vanished. A Japanese

conglomerate planned to build the world’s largest

industrial salt plant on the lagoon’s edge, threatening

to poison its pristine waters. WILDCOAST, a

conservation nonprofit co-founded by Serge Dedina,

Ph,D., helped lead the fight that stopped the project

and secured 483 miles of protected coastline around

Baja’s gray whale lagoons.

That victory preserved one of the last undeveloped

gray whale nurseries on Earth. But today, a far bigger

threat looms.

Movement

Together for

Babies in the NICU

This year’s

Breakfast at

Tiffany’s was

one for the

books. The

signature

Miracle

Babies luncheon was a soldout

success, welcoming 180

guests and raising more than

$81,000, each dollar carrying

with it the promise of hope.

That generosity translates

into hot meals for parents

who have not left the hospital

in days, transportation for

mothers desperate to reach

their newborns, and moments

of relief that remind families

they are not alone during the

hardest chapter of their lives.

Behind the elegant setting

and sparkling décor was a

deeper purpose: supporting

families with babies in the

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),

the specialized hospital unit where

premature or critically ill newborns

receive round-the-clock medical

care. While doctors and nurses fight

Miracle Babies Board Member Brittany

Games with Co-Founder Marjan Mortazavi

Behind every

dollar raised

is a story of

love, struggle,

and resilience

to stabilize fragile infants,

parents face an equally

relentless struggle, balancing

jobs, other children at home,

and the emotional weight of

watching their baby fight for

life.

Behind every dollar raised is

a story of love, struggle, and

resilience. Vanessa’s story is

one of them.

Vanessa, a proud mother of

five and full-time working

parent, knows this reality

firsthand. At five months

pregnant she discovered

she was carrying triplets.

Her NICU journey was

long and exhausting. Her

son spent 28 days in the

NICU while her daughters

remained in intensive care

for 52 days. During that

time, she juggled daily

hospital visits with caring for her

toddler at home. The strain was

immense, yet she found comfort

through Miracle Babies’ programs.

60 OCTOBER 2025 | GBSAN.COM

She remembers

the relief she felt

at Miracle Hour,

a peer support

gathering for

NICU parents.

Sharing a meal

and a craft with

others walking the

same road gave

her strength when

she felt she had

none left. “It is

hard to bring one

baby home from

the hospital, let

alone three,” Vanessa

reflects. Even today,

six years later, she

remains grateful that

Miracle Babies was

part of her story.

Her triplets are now

healthy, thriving

children, and she

is still connected to

the NICU families

she met during

those difficult days.

Miracle Babies Family at NICU Reunion

Stories like Vanessa’s

are why Miracle

Babies exists. Too

often, families are

forced to choose

between meeting

basic needs at home

or being present with their hospitalized newborn.

Miracle Babies removes that impossible choice.

Through transportation assistance, mental health

counseling, and programs like Miracle Hour, parents

are given the

strength and

stability to stay

close to their

babies when it

matters most.

The impact of

Miracle Babies

reaches far

beyond a single

event or family.

Each story is

part of a larger

movement to

ensure that

parents never

face the NICU

journey alone.

That movement

now calls for the

support of the entire

community.

Whether through

volunteering your

time, lending your

voice, or making

a gift, you become

part of the village

that surrounds

NICU families with

love and strength.

From the joy of a

sold-out Breakfast

Vanessa and her family

at Tiffany’s to the

urgent need facing

families today, Miracle Babies continues to prove that

when a community comes together, miracles happen.

Hope

A New Chapter of Care

TRUECARE OPENS VISTA WAY HEALTH CAMPUS

Ribbon Cutting

When the ribbon was cut on

TrueCare’s brand-new Vista

Way Health Campus in

Oceanside, the crowd gathered

was not just celebrating a

building, it was celebrating

what that campus represents:

hope, accessibility, and community.

On a sunny August afternoon, families, community

partners, and local leaders came together to tour the

37,488-square-foot campus and witness a milestone in

North County health care. The energy was celebratory,

with TrueCare’s President and CEO Michelle D.

Gonzalez reminding guests of the heart behind the

expansion.

“The Vista Way Health Campus represents our

ongoing commitment to providing high-quality,

comprehensive care and supporting the long-term

well-being of our communities,” Gonzalez shared with

GB Magazine. “By uniting essential services in one

location, we are creating a welcoming space where

patients feel supported and connected.”

68 OCTOBER 2025 | GBSAN.COM

From the moment guests stepped inside, it was clear

that this is not your typical medical office. Designed

with patients in mind, the Vista Way Health Campus

combines convenience with comfort. Here, primary

care and QuickCare services are just steps away from

a state-of-the-art dental health center, as well as

chiropractic

and

acupuncture

suites, all

under one roof.

Its location

could not be

more strategic,

either. Just

a short walk

from Tri-

City Medical

Center, the

campus makes

it easier for

patients to

coordinate care

without the stress

of long commutes

or multiple

appointments

spread across

town. For families

balancing work,

school, and life’s

daily demands, this

kind of thoughtful

design is more than

a convenience, it

is peace of mind,

which is exactly

what TrueCare had

in mind.

TrueCare’s brand-new

Vista Way Health Campus

For over five

decades, TrueCare has been more than a health

provider; it has been a neighbor, advocate, and

partner in wellness. Each year, nearly 70,000 patients

rely on TrueCare’s 26 health centers and WIC offices

throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties. The

services go far beyond the basics, offering pediatrics,

women’s health, behavioral health, cardiology,

podiatry, nutrition, and even mobile health units that

bring care directly into communities.

Just as importantly, TrueCare offers support where life

and health intersect: transportation assistance, weekly

food distributions, and help enrolling in insurance,

because good

health does

not happen in

isolation.

The Vista

Way Health

Campus stands

as a symbol

of what is

possible when

compassion

meets action.

For the

patients who

will walk

through its

doors, it means

more than a checkup;

it means a

space where dignity

and care go hand

in hand. And for

the community, it

is a reminder that

health care should

feel personal,

accessible,

and rooted in

belonging.

As one guest at the

opening said with

a smile, “It feels

like the community

finally has a place that feels like it was built for us.”

About San Diego

YES, IT’S

COWLES MOUNTAIN… BUT

BY KEN KRAMER

I

remember

the

afternoon

at Mount

Hope

Cemetery.

Harriette

Wade

was positively

gleeful when,

after searching

the rows of

headstones, she

at last found

what she was

looking for.

“Here he is!”

she shouted,

brushing away

a few leaves to

read the marble

inscription

aloud: “George A.

Cowles, Founder of

Cowlestown.”

Please believe me when

I tell you that Harriette

was in love with George.

Never mind that he had

been dead for 105 years,

there was a deep fondness here. She had come to learn

and document almost everything about him.

In 1887 George Cowles owned about 4,000 acres in the

El Cajon Valley, where he planted a wonderful variety

of fruits, olives, and grain. He also raised thoroughbred

horses and polo ponies and tirelessly worked to create

George Algernon

Cowles’ Gravestone

George Cowles was the

founder of Cowlestown

and build

his little

community

called

Cowlestown.

“He was

determined

to make it a

nice place,”

Harriette

told me.

And then he

died. The

story is that

he worked

so hard on

Cowlestown

that it killed

him at age

51. And as

long as I

knew her, she was

fiercely protective of

his legacy, especially

when it came to the

one thing that irked

her to no end. You

see, San Diegans most

often mispronounce

his name.

A few hundred thousand of us every year climb to the

highest point in our city by hiking up the trail to the

peak of Cowles Mountain in Mission Trails Regional

Park. The vast majority calling it “COWels” Mountain,

but Harriette always insisted his name was correctly said

as “KOHLs.” (Like hot coals). It perplexed her that it

Our City’s Highest Peak is

Santee Historian

Harriette Wade in 1995

The Cowlestown School

never quite caught on. “Is it so hard to remember?” To me it always made sense.

If my name were spelled B-o-w-l-e-s, I sure wouldn’t want folks messing that up.

Well, the more Harriette learned about George Cowles, the more she felt his

legacy deserved more. For starters, after his death, his widow married again,

and shortly thereafter, the Cowlestown name began disappearing as her

new husband, Milton Santee gained prominence and influence. Thus today,

you have to go pretty far back in history to find many references to George

Cowles, whose only lasting landmark is that mountain bearing his name, if

we could just get it right.

For her part, Harriette, longtime President of the Santee Historical Society,

championed the cause ’til her death in 2006. Honestly, the Society took a

few years to recover and the Cowles (Kohls) name pronunciation campaign

sort of died with her. But I think she would be heartened to know that the

past few years have seen more hikers who have found it easier to remember.

He deserves it, and so does she.

Wonder

ENF Holiday Smiles

BRINGING JOY WHERE IT IS NEEDED MOST

The holidays are meant to be filled with

joy, laughter, and time spent with loved

ones. But for children battling cancer

and other life-threatening illnesses,

the season often looks very different.

Instead of twinkling lights at home,

many spend their holidays in hospital

rooms, undergoing treatments, surrounded by medical

equipment instead of family.

The Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF) believes that

no child should miss out on the magic of the season.

Each year, the organization launches Holiday Smiles, a

campaign designed to bring hope, comfort, and joy to

children receiving care at Rady Children’s Hospital.

The campaign begins in November with fundraising,

toy drives, and volunteer events that bring the

community together in generosity. These efforts

blossom in December into unforgettable holiday

celebrations inside the Transplant, Oncology, and

Sickle Cell Units at Rady’s. During these parties,

children open presents and experience the wonder

of the holidays, while parents are given the relief

of seeing their child smile despite the challenges of

illness.

One parent shared with GB Magazine, “When ENF

gave our child presents, it meant more than words

could explain. We did not know how or if we would

celebrate that year, but seeing our child smile,

reminded us that joy is still possible, even in hard

times.”

76 OCTOBER 2025 | GBSAN.COM

Holiday Smiles is part

of ENF’s Continuum

of Care, which ensures

families receive support

not only during the

holidays but throughout

the year, from free rides

to treatment through

Ride With Emilio, to

food security, education,

and emotional

support. The holiday

season offers a special

opportunity for ENF

and its supporters to go

even further, ensuring

children who are

fighting for their lives

still feel the warmth and

wonder of this special

time of year.

Here are some ways

that you can support

the Holiday Smiles

campaign:

• Donating gifts that

will be wrapped and

hand-delivered to

children in the hospital.

• Joining a giftwrapping

party, where

volunteers prepare

presents and share in

the joy of giving.

• Assembling snack

bags with hospitalapproved

treats. Since

some children must

fast for up to 24 hours

before chemotherapy,

these thoughtful bags

provide comfort and

relief when they are

finally able to eat.

Every gift and every act of kindness make a difference. This holiday season, ENF

and its supporters aim to ensure that every child in the Transplant, Oncology, and

Sickle Cell Units at Rady Children’s experiences joy, hope, and love. Together, the

community will not only deliver presents, they will deliver Holiday Smiles.

Feeding San Diego

PROVIDING A PLACE AT THE TABLE FOR EVERY SAN DIEGAN

The holidays are the busiest season for

Feeding San Diego and its community

network of non-profits and faith-based

organizations who help distribute

nutritious meals to people experiencing

hunger. Holiday meals go beyond food.

They are about cherished cultural

traditions, gathering with loved ones, and passing on

what matters to the next generation. But too many

families are going to struggle to put their holiday meal

on the table this year. When a family cannot afford to

put that meal on the table, they lose a lot more than

nutrition. Feeding San Diego and its countywide

hunger-relief network provide nourishment to San

Diegans who need resources. It could be an activeduty

service member and their family who just got

stationed in San Diego, a senior living in a small

mountain town who has trouble getting to the grocery

store an hour away, or working parents of small

children who grapple with tough choices with the high

cost of living.

Families Are Feeling the Pressure

According to the latest data from Feeding America,

the national organization that Feeding San Diego

is a partner food bank of, nearly 400,000 people in

San Diego County are experiencing food insecurity - a

startling increase of nearly 10% from the previous

year. This includes just over 100,000 children. Food

insecurity rates are higher than they were pre-pandemic.

Nearly a third of households in San Diego County are

struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living. The

high cost of food and other essentials like housing and

healthcare, employment and other factors - like the end

78 OCTOBER 2025 | GBSAN.COM

of pandemic-era

relief efforts -

are among the

top reasons why

it is increasingly

difficult to afford

and access the

food people

need to thrive.

Proven

ach October, The

the contributions

of people with

workforce. This year

marks the 80th anniversary

of NDEAM, a milestone that

reflects decades of progress

toward inclusion and

opportunity.

people each year.

Among them, over

350 individuals

receive job training,

placement, and

coaching- opening

doors to meaningful

employment and

independence.

One of those

individuals is Sean

Mooney, who has

been thriving as a

courtesy clerk at

Vons for nearly three

years. Known for

his cheerful attitude

and dedication, Sean helps

customers bag groceries, locate

items, retrieve carts, and keep

the store clean. “I like my job

because it’s good to help out

other people,” Sean shared

with a smile. His enthusiasm

and reliability have made him

a valued member of the team.

Angie Elsbury, Assistant

Store Director at Vons, has

seen firsthand the impact

of inclusive hiring. “Sean is

very precise and wants to do

his tasks correctly. We count

on him, and he succeeds in

any area he is assigned,” she

said. With the support of his

job coach, Anthony, Sean

has grown more confident

and independent in his role,

embodying the spirit of

NDEAM.

The bond between Sean

and his team goes beyond

the workplace. When Angie

learned that Sean was

competing in the Special

Olympics, she rallied

friends, made custom

shirts with his face,

and traveled to Orange

County to cheer him

on. Sean proudly wore

his medals and shirt

to work the next day,

and his achievement

was celebrated on

breakroom TVs

across 330 Vons stores

statewide.

“Sean’s dedication

shared with GB Magazine.

“He is a shining example of

how inclusion empowers

individuals to thrive.”

Vons’ commitment to

diversity is woven into its

culture. Gina Castro, Talent

for the Vons SoCal Division,

A Legacy of Love

BENJAMIN “BEN” MACIAS TRANSFORMS

HEALTHCARE IN NATIONAL CITY

Standing Nathan, Jose, Ben, and Marcus

Macias. Sitting Lorraine and Jose Chuy Macias

In the heart of National City, a new beacon of hope

is rising thanks to the extraordinary generosity of

Benjamin “Ben” Macias. Born and raised in National

City, Ben’s philanthropic journey began with the

values instilled by his parents as the pathway to

success: perseverance, hard work, and dedication.

These principles shaped his success and inspired his

commitment to uplifting others.

Ben’s sense of responsibility toward his community

was also deeply influenced by family. As a young man,

he helped care for his grandfather, an experience that

opened his eyes to the challenges seniors face in accessing

compassionate care. This experience led him to launch

CFS Transportation, a company serving elderly and

medically fragile adults with transportation services. CFS

Transportation is an extension of the Macias family’s

legacy of love, respect, and resilience.

Today, that legacy takes form in Ben’s transformational

gift to San Ysidro Health, the largest individual donation

in the organization’s 56-year history. His contribution

is helping fund the Macias Family Health Center, a

143,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility that will

serve thousands of families. His investment is his legacy

rooted in love, vision, and commitment to health equity

within his community.

It is expected to serve 20,000 patients in its first year

and will house a Program of All-Inclusive care for

the Elderly (PACE) and a Federally Qualified Health

Center, ensuring holistic, culturally competent care for

vulnerable seniors and families. This gift is a lifeline for

the South Bay community.

Beyond healthcare, Ben’s generosity is catalyzing

economic development. His donation will create 200

jobs, spark economic growth, and set a new standard

for philanthropic leadership in the South Bay. For over

15 years, Ben has stood beside San Ysidro Health, as a

donor, hands-on volunteer, and co-presenting sponsor

of the annual Clásico de Golf Tournament. His presence

Spreading Holiday Cheer

FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPMENTAL

DISABILITIES’ SEASON OF SHARING

Season of Sharing with Aura

The holiday season is a time meant for

family, joy, and togetherness. Yet for

many families served by the San Diego

Regional Center (SDRC), this time

of year can bring immense financial

stress. The rising cost of utilities and

rent often forces difficult choices

between paying for basic needs or celebrating the

holidays, leaving little room for traditions that should

bring comfort and joy.

The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD)

created the program to change that reality. Through

this campaign, FDD raises funds to provide holiday

gift cards to SDRC clients in San Diego and Imperial

Counties who are experiencing financial hardship,

ensuring that families can celebrate the holidays with

joy. For many, these gift cards mean a holiday meal,

warm clothing for a child, or the ability to share gifts

that make the season memorable.

Meeting a Growing Need

The demand for assistance has grown dramatically. In

the past year alone, SDRC welcomed over 4,000 new

clients, adding to the thousands of families in need of

support. This surge highlights the growing significance

of the Season of Sharing program. Each contribution,

whether from an individual donor, a family, or a

sponsor, has a positive impact on local families,

making the holidays brighter and less stressful.

A Celebration with Purpose

The Season of Sharing event returns on November

16th at Stone Brewing in Liberty Station, offering

a family-friendly evening where giving back meets

holiday fun. This festive gathering welcomes

supporters, partners, and the community to come

together for crafts, games, holiday shopping, and

plenty of cheer for all ages. Families can enjoy quality
