NOTES
HI EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO ASHTON GATE
FOR OUR FIRST LEAGUE MATCH AT THIS BRILLIANT
STADIUM. WE LOVED HOSTING NEWCASTLE UNITED
WOMEN HERE IN PRESEASON- IT WAS A FANTASTIC
ATMOSPHERE, AND I AM SURE YOU WILL ALL CREATE
THAT AGAIN FOR US TODAY.
I would like to welcome Carly Davies and her Nottingham Forest team to
Ashton Gate today. After a fantastic promotion season last year, it’s great
to see them in WSL2 and we look forward to what we know will be a
competitive game today.
We were really pleased to secure back-to-back wins last Sunday away
at Southampton. We were so disappointed to start the season the way
we did, so to bounce back with 2 wins and 2 clean sheets, particularly
against a team who scored eight goals in their first two games shows
more of what we want to be and where we’re trying to get to.
It has been an exciting couple of weeks with the announcement of the
new investment from Mercury13. Their vision and support has been
incredible and we are all very excited for the long-term future of this
football club, building on the strong foundations the club has already
built in the women’s game. I’d like to say a special thank you to Gavin
Marshall for all the care and support he has given to the Women’s Team-
Without Gavin’s hard work, support and drive to seek new investment
through Mercury13, we wouldn’t be where we are today. The impact he
has had on this team is immeasurable and he leaves an incredible legacythe
future of Bristol City will stand on the paths he has paved. I know
he will be our biggest fan and will continue to come and support us at
Ashton Gate alongside his daughters Maisie and Emma- so Gavin, thank
you for all your hard work, care, and support.
Lastly, I would just like to pay tribute to my first ‘gaffer’, Matt Beard. Matt
was an incredible man who lit up every room. Fiercely competitive, but
always there with a big bear hug and a laugh that would echo around
every room, he meant so much to so many people. Matt’s passing has
devastated the world of women’s football, and the tributes paid this week
have shown just what a huge role he’s played in the lives of so many
players and coaches- he was the kindest (and funniest) man who would
do anything for anybody. We will pay tribute to him tonight and I know
Bristol City and Nottingham Forest supporters will join us in sending all
our love and thoughts to his wife Debbie, children Harry and Ellie and all
his family and friends. Rest in peace Beardy, you will be loved, missed and
remembered forever. ‘See you when I put me glasses on’.
I hope you all enjoy the match tonight- thank you for your support.
