THE MANAGER

simon parker

WELCOME TO THE SILVERLAKE STADIUM AS WE

TAKE ON SUNDERLAND IN OUR LATEST WOMEN’S

SUPER LEAGUE 2 FIXTURE.

It will be great for us

to play in front of our

supporters once again.

Our home crowds have

been really strong so

far and it is great to see

fans of different ages

coming along to get

involved at our games.

I thought we deserved

to take a point from the

game against Bristol City,

but they are a very good

side. You can see where

we are at compared

to them in terms of the

depth of their squad and

the players they were

able to bring on. We are

a young team and that

shows where we are in

terms of experience.

Both sides had strong

moments in the game

and we had some

good opportunities to

score. We could have

made more of our 2

vs 1 breakaway in the

second half – it’s was a

little frustrating to not

work the goalkeeper but

the transition was well

worked.

I thought we started the

game well, particularly in

the first 20-25 minutes.

Our press was decent,

we were able to get Ellie

Brazil in behind and some

crosses into the box, but

we just couldn't get the

final connection on them

and they defended well

in that spell of the game.

The goal we conceded

was unlucky and the

manner of it was

frustrating. We had just

brought on Ruby Tucker

and then she picked up

her injury to mean we

are down to 10 players

– we knew it was going

to be tough to see it

out with the quality that

Bristol City have.

We still needed to

defend the moment

itself better because

we had only just had a

conversation as a team

about what we were

going to do and we then

allow them to go straight

through us. Having said

that, I did think it was a

foul on Tara Bourne in

the build-up.

It was certainly a game

for us to learn from given

how young we are as a

side. We need to be better

in the key moments in

games, and that includes

our own chances to score.

The fact that we have

been so competitive in

our games so far though

is very encouraging and

I can see that we have

the capacity to beat

the teams that we have

faced.

It could have been easy

for the team to collapse

and concede a second

or a third to Bristol City

too, but the players

didn’t let it affect them. It

was the same at Palace

when we conceded two

quick goals but showed

character to come back

into it. I am proud of my

players because they

have shown that they

can compete.

We want to show more

of the same against

Sunderland and the

support of you, our

fans, will be huge once

again. We are having

to manage our squad

in terms of injuries and

minutes but we will keep

doing what we can,

and there may be a

great opportunity for an

under-21 player to step

up or someone to play

further forward.

It is a massive game for

us today and it is one

that we believe we can

win, and we hope we can

do that with you right

behind us.

The first real opening

came for Saints’ Abbie

Ferguson as she latched

onto Ellie Brazil’s flick

and saw her low effort

comfortably stopped by

Bristol City’s Fran Bentley

in goal.

The pressure from the

hosts continued and

Jess Simpson was next

to go close – exchanging

passes with Michaela

McAlonie on the left

before getting under her

subsequent shot and

sending it over the bar.

Bristol City could have

broken the deadlock

before the half time

interval when a neat ball

over the Saints defence

saw Emily Syme and

Rio Hardy looking to

combine, but an offside

flag denied them.

A positive start to the

second period then saw

Saints go close once

again as Abbie Ferguson

and Ellie Brazil combined

for the latter to shoot in

the box, and the lively

forward proved unlucky

to see the ball deflect

onto the roof of the net.

Ferguson then linked up

with Michaela McAlonie

as Saints looked to hurt

their visitors with a fast

break, but the chance

was wasted as Ferguson

fired wide from a

promising situation.

Bristol City started to

create more as the

second half went on

though and, after seeing

we march on

Mary Ward, Rio Hardy

and Vera Jones go close,

they won the game in the

88th minute.

Having used all of their

substitutions, Saints

played part of the latter

stages with 10 players

after seeing Ruby Tucker

forced off and this gave

the visitors to St Mary’s a

boost, allowing them to

eventually win the game

when former Saints

player Lexi Lloyd-Smith

fired home from inside

the area.

Saints: Stenson, Collett

(Watts 44’), Hack

(Goddard 79’), Bourne,

Simpson, Bashford,

Peplow (Akpan 66’),

Primus (c), McAlonie

(Roberts 66’), Brazil,

Now she returns to

the South Coast

as a 26-yearold,

looking to play an

important leadership role

to help guide a young

Saints squad through

another competitive and

potentially rewarding

second-tier season.

We spoke to Amy as she

prepared to face her old

side…

You were the club’s first

signing this summer. How

have your first few months

as a Saints player been?

Yeah, I’ve been absolutely

loving it. The girls have all

been really welcoming

and obviously staff

coming in as well.

I think we’ve got a really

good connection going,

building relationships

really well. I’m just really

happy and excited for

what this season is going

to bring.

What was it about Saints

that made it the right club

for you as you made the

decision to join?

Obviously, it’s back home

for me. So it’s about

outside of football as well

and I’m actually able to

live at home. It’s also the

ambition from the club.

They’ve always been really

ambitious, aiming really

high - that’s what I want to

be part of, especially in my

career right now.

For me to be part of the

club and join the ambition

of getting promoted and

getting to WSL is something

that I want to do in my

career. As soon as they did

speak to me, I just wanted

to be a part of it.

There was a lot of change

at Saints in terms of a new

manager and a group of

10 // SAINTS

new players during the

off-season. As one of

the leaders in the group,

how well do you feel it

has come together in

the opening weeks of the

season?

Yeah, great. Obviously,

being an experienced

player and wanting to

come in and show my

leadership skills to bring

the group together,

it’s important to build

relationships and make

sure that everyone’s

together in the week and

on game day. I think it’s

really important for us

all to keep building in

relationships on and off

the pitch.

Being part of a new squad,

everyone’s in the same

boat and everyone’s

having that same

experience. I think for all of

us it’s about working hard

together and to show what

we’re about.

It just shows that on

opening day how well we

were clicking as a group. So

yes, we move on and make

sure that we’re still putting

on performances for our

fans and for ourselves.

The start to the season

has been a positive one,

particularly with the

opening day win and the

battling point at Crystal

Palace. That must have

given the squad some

early confidence?

Yeah, for sure.

We do have Simon Parker

coming in and the staff

changeover as well with

a lot of new players. It is

important for us to build

relationships, making sure

that we’re on it in terms

of social activities and

everything like that.

I think the win at the start

of the season was really

important, just to kind of get

us going and make sure

that we start off on a high.

We started as we mean to

go on and I think it’s going

to be a really exciting

season, as the fans can

already see. I just hope

that we can put a display

on and make sure that

we’re on it to take our

opportunities when we

can, week in, week out.

You scored in the

opening day win too,

heading in from a setpiece.

How important is it

to have different players

chipping in with goals

and a variety of ways to

score too?

Yeah, it’s very important.

I do everything I can for

the team and to make

sure that I bring in that

defensive side as well as

the attacking threat. I do

believe that I can definitely

create that threat in the

attacking set-pieces,

along with our set-piece

takers as well.

Hopefully I can contribute

It was a narrow loss to

Bristol City last weekend

at St Mary’s. Given it

was a game that could

have gone either way, is

that one that just shows

the fine margins in this

league?

Yeah, definitely. We have to

take it game by game. In

terms of what happened

last weekend, it was

obviously disappointing

and we will go back and

reflect on that. We will have

coming weekend against

Sunderland. It’s just learning

from what we can. We did

create a lot of opportunities

in the attacking half to put

away, but we just need to

be more clinical in those

moments.

I know WSL 2 is very

competitive, so each

game that we play is

going to give different

challenges, but I think

we’re all experienced

enough to know that we

can’t be too high with the

highs and too low with the

lows. We need to make

sure that we are preparing

as much as possible as a

team and as individuals

to make sure that we can

perform on the weekend.

How big is it to have extra

chances at promotion

this year though, given we

know how tight it can get

at the top of the table?

Yeah, it’s a great

opportunity for the

league to be even more

competitive. There’s a lot

of decent teams in the

league, so I think it’s just

important for us to take it

game by game and make

sure that we are on it

every week.

It’s important to make

sure that we do pick up

points where we can

- whether that’s three

points or one point - and

just try to compete as

much as possible within

the league.

we march on

We have seen strong

home crowds so far this

season, with fans of all

ages coming to watch the

team. How good is that

to see, particularly when

it comes to inspiring the

next generation?

For sure, it’s massive. I

can really tell the level

of support over the past

three games that we’ve

played. We do get a lot

from the fans and I think

they act as the 12th player

for us.

They’re really important

and the support is

massive. And I just hope

that we keep getting in the

crowds that we have been

over the past two home

games. I’m excited to see

more fans coming to the

games to see how we’re

playing, and hopefully that

attracts even more.

I’m all for inspiring the next

generation and making

sure that we can give

the younger generation

as much opportunity as

possible. I feel like that is

an important thing and

what Southampton want

to promote as well through

the academy, trying to

develop younger girls to

play football and give

opportunities to them.

I feel as though it’s

important to me as an

individual to do that,

but also I know that it’s

important for the club to

do that as well. To have

them all behind us at the

ground at St Mary’s.

We can hear them all the

way and it’s just really

important to highlight

that they really are a key

factor as to why we do

try to perform and put a

performance on for them.
