Camp weekend - Hat bands, tents & tunes

There were a few anxious

moments for the organisers,

wondering if the hall would be

open in time for the Jigarre

Jammin’ camp weekend. The

Campaspe Council had

undertaken essential repairs to

both Girgarre main hall and

supper room including the

enormous job of replacing the

floors. But, it was ready in time!

Enthusiastic campers

started arriving early in the week

and the weather held out for the

weekend.

There will be a few more

items for the council to take care

of in later months so watch this

space.

Many great musical relationships are formed at the camp weekends. This group met on the first day

and gave us an impromptu performance. They called themselves the Stand In Singers.

OCTOBER 2025 GIRGARRE GAZETTE keeping our community connected pg. 3

There were more than seventy

happy campers at this year’s

event - everything from humble

tents to decked-out vans and

campers (some setups had a few

glamping additions).

One of the best parts of the

weekend is ‘Hat Band.’ Names

get pulled out of a hat, and

suddenly you’re in a band with

strangers. You’ve then got an

hour or two to learn a song to

perform that evening - thankfully

with a leader to keep things on

track.

Above left: Getting ready for the random draw for the ‘Hat Bands’ - organiser’s are writing the

leader’s number on performer’s hands.

Below left: Instruments of all kinds were featured in the open mic including guitars, ukuleles,

cajons, accordions, kazoos, harps, drums, violins and Irish whistle.

Town Crier Championships - an ancient & honourable art form

OUR DISTRICT Town Crier, Judy

Campbell, accompanied by her

husband, Peter, recently

travelled to the United Kingdom

to compete in the Ancient and

Honourable Guild of Town

Criers Naonal Championship,

hosted by the Court Leet and

sponsorship from businesses

within the town of Bromsgrove,

Worcestershire.

The championship was

held to commemorate the 40th

anniversary of the appointment

of their illustrious town crier,

Kevin Ward. Twenty-five town

criers took part in the

championship, with your town

crier placing 4th and being

presented the Bob Walker

trophy by MP for Bromsgrove,

Bradley Thomas. This award is

given to the highest placed crier

who has not won the Naonal

Championship previously. Peter

also was awarded a trophy for

Best Dressed Consort,

presented by Bromsgrove Court

Leet Bailiff, Mark Robinson.

Following the Naonal

Championship event, Judy and

Peter then travelled to Clare,

Suffolk, UK to compete in their

Inaugural Town Crier

Compeon. Clare is an

ancient town, founded

pre-Norman mes and is

a treasure trove of living

history. The first

Augusnian Friary in

Britain was established

in Clare in 1248! Once

again, Peter was

awarded Best Dressed

Consort, managing to

keep looking cool, even

through an unheard of

33-degree summer day –

thanks to the coon-based

ensemble created by Heather

Kidgell and Margaret Colliver of

Tongala. Peter is dressed in the

manner of James Maiden,

founder of Moama, NSW. Judy’s

uniform is that of an 19th

Century ladies riding habit

based on the royal colours of

purple and gold. The town crier

commiee received permission

from Buckingham Palace in

1994 to wear those colours,

rather than favouring either of

Campaspe or Murray River

councils, as Judy represents

both Shires in her

ambassadorial role.

Once more they packed

their bags and headed for Chard,

Devon, UK, this me for an

annual event hosted by this

picturesque town. The High

Sheriff of Somerset was one of

the judges, with fourteen Criers

and Consorts compeng. Judy

and Peter were awarded Best

Dressed Couple, Peter also won

Best Dressed Consort, Judy was

presented with a special Mayoral

award for her Ambassadorial

flair.

There was a specially baked

and decorated cake created for

the Best Dressed Couple award.

This is coveted prize every year in

Chard, luncheon guests were very

appreciave that Judy and Peter

shared the cake with all present.

Trophies from all the events are

perpetual ones, in many cases featuring

silver, so have been retained by the Guild

and host Town Criers, to be engraved with

the appropriate details on Judy and Peter’s

behalf, with an invitaon to return next year

and compete again!

Judy and Peter will be travelling to

Tuggeranong, ACT, this October, to compete

in the Australian Town Crier Guild

Championship. This event is sponsored by

Tuggeranong Rotary Club, The Burns Club

and the Highland Gathering on 11th October

– an event not to be missed!

Judy is available for speaking engagements

and community events and can be

contacted via email :

John Zobec A life of service, hard work, family and community spirit

WHEN you sit down with

Councillor John Zobec, it doesn’t

take long to see just how deeply

his roots run in the local

community. Known for his tireless

involvement and approachable

nature, John balances public

service with running a successful

earthmoving company alongside

his brother.

One of his proudest

contributions has been helping

establish the Girgarre

amphitheatre, a project that has

since become a cherished

community landmark. “That was

definitely a highlight,” John says,

reflecting on the dierence the

space has made for local

events.

John and his wife Rosina live

on their 465-acre property on the

edge of Girgarre, a place rich with

family history where they raised

their children. His parents moved

there in 1959, starting out in a

modest dwelling, and it’s where

John has built his life after being

born in the old Bush Nursing

Hospital in Kyabram and spending

his early years in Cooma.

Life as one of nine

councillors in the Campaspe

Shire is far from quiet. John’s

diary is packed with oicial

commitments, meetings, and

community events. Even a simple

trip to the supermarket can

stretch into hours as locals stop

him to share concerns, ideas, and

feedback. “It’s a big

commitment,” he admits, “but

that’s what you sign up for when

you want to serve.”

Of course, not every part of

the role is easy. John points to the

recent Kyabram Recreation

Reserve renovations as a missed

opportunity. “The upgrades just

didn’t go far enough,” he says,

noting that more should have been

done to improve safety for women

in sport and ensure accessibility

for all.

Now in his eleventh year as a

councillor, John remains guided by

simple but powerful philosophies:

work hard, be grateful, don’t judge,

and don’t be selfish. Above all,

give back to your

community.

For John, there’s no better

place to do just that. “We really do

live in the best spot,” he says,

proud of the district’s many assets

- from the beautiful Botanic

Garden and the soundshell, to the

nearby Kyabram Fauna Park & Zoo,

to the historic attractions of

Echuca Wharf and

Rushworth.

It’s this blend of dedication,

humility, and pride in place that

makes Councillor John not just a

representative of the people, but a

true part of the fabric of the

community he serves.

Above: John pictured with the

laser bucket used to construct the

Girgarre Soundshell Amphitheatre.

(with apologies to Banjo Paterson)

There was panic here in Rushworth as my gumboots now were much worse

Than the day that I had bought them down in Melbourne long ago

Through the front my toes were peaking and the left-hand boot was leaking

So I decided sadly that they really had to go

A pair of size eleven would be absolutely heaven

But I looked in Coles and Woollies and nothing could be found

Then I thought about the op shop as I knew it was a top spot

So I thought that I would wander in and have a look around

Well the shop was a sensation and their stock a revelation

they had shoes for every purpose from picnic to a ball

I thought all boots were taken but it seems I was mistaken

For tucked into a corner was a pair against the wall

So I bought my boots with pleasure from a shop that is a treasure

And a very fancy cookbook that I may not ever use

And now I will remember that when spring comes in September

That the famous Rushworth op shop is the perfect place for shoes.

THE BIG REVEAL – UNVEILING BANKSIA

THE eagerly awaited unveiling of ‘Banksia’, the

latest attraction in the Gargarro Botanic Garden, will

take place at 1pm during the Girgarre Open Gardens

Festival on 26 October.

Julian Smith, the creator of the large-scale art

installation, along with Shire of Campaspe Mayor,

Daniel Mackrell, members of the Foundry Arts Space

selection committee, (the folk tasked with choosing

the winning entry), and other guests will all be in

attendance.

In the meantime, work has commenced on a

new entrance to the gardens near the Gargarro café,

including new signage and widened pathways

leading to the sculpture – all aimed at improving

access to the café, and connectivity and amenity for

the large crowds expected once the sculpture is

revealed.

Spring always brings a garden to life and the

Gargarro Botanic Garden is no exception, being at

their best at the moment. Tickets to the garden party

are on sale now. Entry is by pre- purchased ticket;

there will be no ticket sales on the day. Use the QR

code below to get yours or go to the Gargarro Green

Thumbs Nursery, open Thursday and Saturday 9am

to 3pm. The gates to the party open from 10 am, a

wrist band will be issued to ticket holders when they

arrive.

Guided walks around the gardens and sound

trail will be available from noon – 2pm. Visitors can

learn about the history of the garden or wander

along the Girgarre Sound Trail’s novel musical

installations hidden among the lovely native shrubs

on the trail. Or, if you’d rather, just stroll around the

exhibits, buy a rale ticket and enjoy the ambience

and the lovely spring weather while you wait for the

highly anticipated high tea at 2pm. See back page

for more detail.

The Butterfly Garden news

Now is the time

of year to think

about how we can control the

white cabbage butterfly (moth)

which lays eggs that hatch into

the green caterpillars (loopers)

which love to travel all types of

seedlings and plants.

I have found that the fine

curled cress or land cress works

very well. This is bought in a

packet as seeds.

Plant the seeds in a large

pot or in the veggie patch. Water

well until established. The

butterfly will lay her eggs. They

hatch and the caterpillar eats the

plant and is poisoned. The cress

will self-seed if left after

flowering or you may save the

seed when it has turned a light

brown colour.

There is a large plant of

rhubarb in the back garden ready

to be harvested. When picking,

hold stalks near the base of the

plant and twist o. You must put

leaves in the bin as these are

poisonous. Rhubarb along with

strawberries or apple are great

together as a dessert.

Girgarre Football Netball Club

THE 2025 season is over and

what a year it has been!!

The KDL Grand Final was

held on Saturday 13th

September on a beautiful Spring

day, with 3 Girgarre FNC netball

teams playing for the ultimate

feat, Premiers!! The U13s were

first up and despite a slow start,

they were then able to match it

with their opposition Shepp East.

Unfortunately, they were never

able to catch up with Shepp East

coming away with the win 37 –

32. Our youngest (finals eligible)

joeys should be incredibly proud

of themselves as the rest of the

club is. They played with heart,

determination and teamwork.

Zara McKenzie, Alarna Tomasini

and Aleyah Morton all stood up,

playing some of their best

games, whilst Gemma Tomasini

and Daisy Woodcock were as

always strong influencers down

the court.

C grade was up next and

their opposition didn’t know what

hit them, with our team piling on

the goals to lead 8-0 mid-way

through the 1st quarter. Pam and

Sarah moved around the ring and

put up some incredible shots at

goal, whilst our defence in Ez and

Maddy P really applied the

pressure, keeping the Shepp East

goalers with no answers. A

number of defensive

combinations were used

throughout the game, with all of

the girls stepping up to keep the

pressure on and Shepp East

goals diicult to get. Reh was

inspirational through the

midcourt and when our junior

Katelyn Munro stepped on the

court she kept up the intensity,

playing a confident and fastpaced

game. The crowd went

wild as the game finished, with

an emphatic 36-22 win, giving

300+ GFNC gamer Krusty Day her

first Premiership in her first ever

Grand Final appearance, along

with other long-time players in

Pam McGrath, Stacey Fletcher

and Maddy P!! Stacey Fletcher

was awarded Best on Court by

the umpires.

A grade followed later in

the afternoon, again with Shepp

East as their opponents. Our girls

had a cracking 1st quarter

against an undefeated side,

leading 11-10. Unfortunately,

Shepp East pulled away in the

second quarter and whilst

fighting hard, we were never able

to pull this lead in. The girls never

gave up and gave it their all,

eventually going down 30-46.

Allana Adams, despite suering

an injury early in the game,

OCTOBER 2025 GIRGARRE GAZETTE keeping our community connected pg. 17

battled on all game in

defence, whilst Holly Nelson

showed some of her best

netball through the midcourt.

Jacqui Gahan and Kim

Hanratty worked tirelessly in

the ring against some very

tight defenders. Everyone

played their part, but Shepp

East were just too strong on

the day. The girls should be

very proud of their eorts,

with back-to-back grand final

appearances a testament to

their hard work and

dedication.

The GFNC and KDL

Presentation Nights have

been held, with more details

to be included next month.

Monday 6th October 7pm at

THE

Campervan

Giveaway

Scam

currently on Facebook.

....The scam is deceptively simple

and devilishly eective. A

Facebook page named “Camper &

RV World” posts images of a

luxurious camper van, claiming it is

up for grabs because it didn’t sell.

The post then entices with easy

instructions to win just type “@” in

the comments, select ‘highlight’,

and you could be the lucky

recipient. Sounds too good to be

true right?

Here’s the catch: there is no

camper van. The true purpose is far

more insidious.

Initial investigation by the

Cybertrace team linked this scam

to an individual named, Halaman

Muka from Indonesia. Cybertrace

notes that this individual is well

known for phishing activity via

social media and websites hosted

with Google Sites.

Mechanics of the Scam

1. Engagement Manipulation: The

post’s instructions exploit

Facebook’s algorithm, enhancing

its reach and visibility.

2. Psychological Trickery: By

mimicking legitimate giveaways,

the scam plays on the user’s

excitement and trust.

3. Network Eect: As friends are

tagged the scam spreads virally,

multiplying its audience fast.

4. Scammers’ Payo: Increased

engagement could lead to data

harvesting, phishing, or spreading

malware.

The Risks Involved

Beware of the risks associated with

online giveaways, as they can lead

to identity theft through the misuse

of your personal information for

fraudulent activities, financial loss

from scammers requesting money

for non-existent taxes or delivery

fees, privacy invasion from the

monitoring of your social media

activity for future scams, and

system compromise from malware

that may be hidden in links within

such posts.

If malware is present this may

allow an attacker to gain access to

your computer and access your

Girgarre Primary School - Building Confidence, Curiosity & Community

WHAT a great term it has been!

The new jackets that we’ve added

to our uniform oerings look great

and it has been so pleasing to see

everyone wearing them with

pride. We received our Silver

School-Wide Positive Behaviour

Award, sta have completed

professional learning in inclusive

education and positive classroom

management. We hosted a great

cluster day for athletics and this

week met up with these schools,

and a few others, for the literacy

day, organised by Fiona Smith,

and an AFL Day in Tatura. We

completed our swimming

program last week and it is always

incredible to see the development

in children's skills and confidence

in such a short period of time.

Our Father’s Day breakfast

was well attended, and Book Week

was another successful day -

made better by such a strong

parent presence and collaborating

with the kindergarten children too.

Term 3 is an incredible one for

growth in student learning - it’s

when everything just seems to

‘click’ for a lot of students.

As we focus our attention to

Term 4, it is another busy one. Lots

of assessment, report writing and

all our end of year celebrations.

We’ll also have a stall at the

October market (12 Oct) and will

be seeking parent

support, especially from our Year

4-6 families as the funds raised will

be used to subsidise the Canberra

camp. We will also run the BBQ on

Sun 26 Oct as part of the Open

Gardens event at the Botanic

Gardens. We look forward to

seeing everyone there.

Day in Tatura on Wed 18 Sept.
