Bramall Lane under the lights is a special
place and our first midweek home game
of the campaign gives us a fantastic
chance to build on Saturday’s result.
It will, hopefully, also give us an
opportunity to show our recognition for the
magnificent support from the punters who
have gone above and beyond in backing
this club. It was humbling to see 30,000
here for the last home game and people
scrambling for tickets, especially in the
circumstances. It was gutting to not send
the fans home with a result but tough times
don’t last forever, there’s been positive
signs of late and we deservedly were able
to pick up our first points at the weekend.
Again, the supporters were brilliant,
never stopping throughout the game,
especially in the second half. We
appreciate it is our job to give them
something to shout about and we did that.
If I know anything about Blades fans,
they want their players to show courage
and be brave on the ball, but they also
want everyone to run around and wear the
shirt with pride and the players did that at
Oxford.
It was a great moment for the lads and
supporters at full-time. It has been a tough
period for everybody.
I’ve watched from afar and from close
by over the last couple of weeks and the
players want to leave everything out there,
which they did, and I thought the second
half performance at the weekend was more
like us. More composed, calmer and with
belief. I think you’ve got to accept that we
were on a losing streak so it wasn’t going
to be free flowing but there were some
really good performances out there in the
second half. We tweaked the shape, and
I must say that we defended tremendously,
particularly late on, but, importantly for me,
the players were committed, together and
found a way to win.
Appreciating that it wasn’t all plain
sailing, it was scrappy in the first half
but we calmed the lads down a little at
half-time and everyone believed in the
process about how to get a result, with and
without the ball, and there were plenty of
good qualities out there, which we have
reminded the players of in the limited time
we have had with them in preparation for
this game tonight.
We were in on Sunday and Monday,
recovering and preparing. From a mentality
point of view we weren’t in a great place,
that is understandable after the start to the
season, but there are positive signs.
It is about getting the balance right and
then making good decisions with and
without the ball at both ends of the pitch.
We have asked them to compete and the
stats, from the last two matches, say that
we are doing that, we are moving in the
right direction.
Mentally, physically and technically,
there’s enough in our changing room to
pick up results in this division, but we
have to consistently put it all together on a
Saturday afternoon and Tuesday evening
and that’s the plan.

Chiedozie Ogbene
CHIEO EXCITED TO WORK
WITH HIS NEW BOSS
New signing Chiedozie Ogbene is
relishing working under United’s returning
boss Chris Widler, who handed him his
full Blades debut in the recent home clash
against Charlton Athletic.
After moving on loan from fellow
Championship side Ipswich Town on
Deadline Day, Chieo had to be patient
as he waited for his United bow after
being unable to play against parent club
Ipswich Town.
Following defeat at Portman Road,
United then turned again to Wilder
following the departure of Rubén
Sellés, with the current Blades boss
name-checking the Republic of
Ireland international during his media
press conference.
Now having had the chance to work
under Wilder and his staff for a period of
time, Chieo is excited for the future as he
looks to seal a regular place under his
latest manager.
He said: “Even though I haven’t
previously worked with the gaffer, I feel like
I know what he demands. He came in, he
didn’t put that immense pressure on us, he
knows what type of group we are, we put
that pressure on ourselves.
“He’s just trying to implement the
culture of the club back again. It was good
for me to experience him first hand, he’s
a manager who is very experienced at
this level, so he knows what he’s talking
about and he’s trying to get us to play
effective football which you want to play
in this division. Hopefully, things will start
clicking for us and we can get some points
on the board.”
Chieo experienced Bramall Lane as
a home player for the first time when
he made his debut against the Addicks
recently, and followed up with an assist in
the win at Oxford as United recorded a first
win of the season.
He added: “It is an honour to represent
this club and for the gaffer to put his trust in
me to make my debut so soon.
“I’ve come here to offer myself and to
help the team in any way possible. After
being out with injury for nine months, I feel
like myself again. When I have the ball, I’m
not careful of defenders, I just want to take
people on and create chances as much as
I can for the team.”

PERFORMANCE WE CAN
BUILD ON – BEN
Experienced defender Ben
Mee has said Saturday’s
win at Oxford can be
something the Blades
can build on.
The former Burnley
and Brentford ace was
handed his full debut at
the Kassam Stadium, and
he helped guide Chris
Wilder’s side to a first three
points of the season after
Callum O’Hare’s second
half winner.
It’s been a tough start
to the campaign for the
Blades, but Ben has seen
some positive signs,
especially second half in
Oxfordshire, calling on
himself and his teammates
to try and build on what
was a big three points.
He said: “It was a little
scrappy at times and a little
rusty at times from myself,
but we dug in really well
and showed second half a
little bit more of what we
are about. I though Callum
(O’Hare) was excellent,
got his goal, Gus (Hamer)
and Djibril (Soumaré) got
on the ball really well for
us, we stayed in the game
first half and showed what
we are about second half.
It’s a performance we
can build on.
Ben Mee and Tyrese Campbell
celebrate after the win at Oxford
“We moved the ball
quicker second half, got
into the final third more and
got the boys on the ball
who can create. We created
chances, scored a goal
which helps, and it gave us
something to hang on to.
“It was a little ugly at
times, we didn’t start too
well, but second half we
showed what we were
about a bit more and
getting the win breeds
some confidence. The
boys can take a lot from the
performance second half.”
Ben immediately
endeared himself to the
Blades supporters who
chanted his name every
time he touched the ball,
whilst boss Wilder thrust
him to the front of the
group at full-time for some
extra acclaim, which the
unassuming defender
admitted was nice to feel.
He added: “It was nice.
Like I said, I was a bit rusty
at times, things will get
better for me, I’m sure, but
that was nice to get a good
reception from the fans.
I don’t like the attention
too much, I thought the
boys did fantastic, we all
deserved a good round of
applause, it’s something to
build on.”

Saturday’s win at Oxford
was huge for everyone at
the club, with goal hero
Callum O’Hare expressing
his delight for his
teammates and the Blades
supporters.
After a difficult start
to the season, Callum
admitted the period
has been tough for all
concerned, with the
success at the Kassam
Stadium providing a mix of
emotions which included
pure joy and a feeling
of relief.
Callum explained: “I think
relief was the main feeling.
We haven’t been good
enough this season, we
know that, and when you
are in a drought without
winning, then it’s really
tough. The gaffer said at
half-time that we are all
top players, otherwise we
wouldn’t be at this club, so
we went out there with a
bit of freedom second half
and once we got the goal, I
think we defended so well,
everyone can be proud of
that. Like I said, relief for us,
the fans and hopefully it is
something to build on.”
It was Callum’s first of
the season which proved

Callum said: “I was a bit
deeper than normal, and
obviously Chieo beat his
man, so I wanted to get into
the box. I thought that Ty
(Campbell) was going to
flick it, but he just missed it,
so I saw it last second and
reactions kicked in. When
I saw it go into the bottom
corner, like I said, it was
relief.
“When you are in bad
form, confidence isn’t as
high as it should be, and
we do things we shouldn’t
really be doing. Hopefully
we can build on that, we
have another game on
Tuesday, so we need to go
out there and find some
more positives.
“If everyone’s confidence
is high, football is a lot
easier. We need to build
on it in training, day-by-day
and try and take it into the
games and try and get
some wins.
“Football is about the
fans, and without them it
is nothing. So, to go over
there and celebrate with
them at the end is the best
thing.”

INTRODUCTION...
Expectations are always high for teams
eager to bounce back to the Premier
League in double quick time and that is
one of the challenges Southampton are
trying to manage this season.
Manager Will Still has been charged with
the task of piecing the Saints’ revival back
together, with the young tactician attracting
plenty of interest over the summer.
Starting his first senior management role
in English football, he began with a thrilling
victory against Wrexham, which came
courtesy of two late goals at St Mary’s
Stadium.
They also recorded an emphatic away
win at Norwich with Still leading his side
at Bramall Lane tonight looking to record
a second Championship away win of this
season.
A big turnover of the playing staff during
the summer and the arrival of Still as
manager have contributed to a period of
transition, but the Saints have undoubted
quality as they look to march on with
purpose once again.

Will Still
MANAGER
FOCUS
Will Still is living out the dream of many
young English tacticians after he earned
the chance to take over at Southampton
ahead of this Championship season.
Still decided to switch focus from playing
at the age of 17 and now, aged just 32, he
is operating in one of the most competitive
leagues in world football.
He worked in various roles with Belgian
and French clubs before earning his big
break at Reims in France and after some
success with Lens in the top flight of French
football last season, rumours started to link
him with moves to English clubs.
He outlined his story during an
appearance on Sky’s Monday Night Football
earlier this year, with his impressive tactical
acumen adding to his reputation.
“I started off as a video analyst and
gradually worked my way up through the
Belgian second division and then into the
first division,” he said. “I just tried to push
as many doors open as I could. I got lucky
at the right times and met the right people
along the way.
“I moved to France as an assistant
manager, and then things changed pretty
quickly. The manager I was working under
got fired, and the club asked me to take over
for five games before the World Cup. From
there, it all just started to snowball.
“My first real experience was as an
academy coach at Preston North End. I was
doing a university course in Preston, and
as part of that course, I worked with the
U12s at the club. I wasn’t a full-time coach.
I came in more as an outside assistant, but
we had the chance to observe the coaches,
watch the players, and get involved. From
that point, I just knew I wanted to work in
football, in whatever capacity that might be.
“I’ve always thought of it this way:
I hate watching boring games of football.
I don’t want to watch a match and think,
‘I don’t want to watch this’. I want to see
something engaging.”
Still’s success story was always likely
to face its biggest test after accepting the
challenge of trying to lead Southampton
back into the Premier League and the
opening few weeks of this season have
challenged the young tactician as he learns
his trade in the demanding environment of
the Championship.
“We are at a big club, there is competition
for places and a lot of quality here,” he
states. “We have to be demanding of
ourselves and need to use that to get better
individually and collectively. There has been
a big turnover of players and we can’t click
our fingers and everything will work. We all
have to put in a shift to pick up points.
“There are a lot of good players and
good teams in this league, so we have to
start turning our positive stats into goals
and wins.”

IN TIME...
Saturday 1st May 1976
FA Cup final × Wembley Stadium
A sixth-place finish in the old Second
Division was not the story that suggested
Southampton were on the brink of their
greatest moment in 1976, but that is
what transpired as Lawrie McMenemy’s
Saints beat Tommy Docherty’s
United at Wembley.
Bobby Stokes scored the iconic 83rdminute
goal that gave Southampton their
first and so far only FA Cup win, with
the heroes of that team celebrated as
all-time greats as we approach the 50th
anniversary of the great day next year.
The closest Southampton came to
matching this famous FA Cup triumph
came in 2003, when they were beaten in
the final by Arsenal.

One-club men are a rarity in the modern

This masterful performer had numerous
chances to make big-money moves away
from Southampton, but his loyalty to the
club ensured he remained on the south
coast and as a result, his legacy was
secured long before his career came to an
end in 2002.
A brilliant penalty taker and a majestic
free-kick converter, Le Tissier scored some
of the all-time great goals of the Premier

UNITED CASHBACK INITIATIVE
Tonight, on our United Cashback Initiative,
we would like to give a warm welcome to
Ridgeway Lionesses.
Ridgeway Lionesses were formed four
years ago when Paul Benison, the club
secretary, wanted to set up a team for his
daughter, Zara. What began with just one
side has steadily grown, and the club now
has four teams: U8s, U9s, U10s and U11s.
All of their teams compete in the Sheffield
& Hallamshire Girls League, playing their
home fixtures at Isobel Bowler in Westfield.
The facilities there provide a good base
for both training and games, helping the
players enjoy their football and develop
their skills together.
Last season was a memorable one,
reaching three cup finals. The current U9s
were successful in lifting a trophy, which was
a great achievement for such a young club.
Tonight, both their U11s and U10s are proudly
representing the club and continuing their
journey forward.
As part of our United Cashback Initiative,
Ridgeway Lionesses can be seen taking part
in tonight’s pre-match flag waving on the
pitch, and have raised money for their club
to spend on anything they wish.
We hope you all have a fantastic night at
Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane.

Be Wise and Advertise...
Many sports grounds have always,
in my memory, had some form of
advertising around them.
Some bright spark back in the day
realised that, if you wanted to tell people
what was going on at the Lyceum in the
coming weeks or tell you to buy Bovril
instead of Oxo, they had to pay for the
privilege.
Bovril have become a staple amongst
football fans over many years

I remember when our kid bought
his first house at Intake, it had a huge
advertising hoarding on the side of it that
you could see from the top of Birley Moor
Road. It was the entire side of the end
terrace that became his home, but the
company who owned it way back then
used to cough up £500 a year for it, and
that was a fair amount of dosh in the early
1980s. It kept him in bubble perms and
flares for quite some time!
The mighty Blades had been dipping
their toe in advertising revenue for a long
time by then. When a programme was
first printed in the 1897/98 title winning
season, it included plenty of adverts in
the thing to bring in commercial revenue.
I also have a couple of examples of
advertising cards from the FA Cup
winning team of 1899 that were originally
made for shop windows, sponsored by
Coleman’s mustard, but, of course, as
time went on the portfolio broadened.
In the archive there are a few nice
examples of how things worked,

especially back in the 1920s and ‘30s
when we reached out to businesses,
both local and national, to get their name
around Beautiful Downtown Bramall
Lane. This was the dawn of what is
described as being our first ‘proper’
manager, Teddy Davison.
Davison was the first to hold the title,
but he was secretary/manager, which
made him pretty much in control of
the whole kit and caboodle. He was
approaching businesses and, it seems
that, in the same manner today when
Paul, Liam and the commercial team
are working their way through the
sponsorship of stands, pitch side etc, so
was he, in addition to sorting out the first
team and pretty much all else.
Admittedly, they wouldn’t have the
modern tec of LED to worry about,
but it seems that two of the big hitters
that were being targeted were the
aforementioned Oxo and bitter beefy
rivals Bovril. The work in the archive
over the summer has turned up some
of the letters that were flying around
at the time from one to another. Both
wanted to spread the word of their meat
concentrated drinks to the good people
of the Steel City, and on 26th September
1933, the manager of their Deansgate
Manchester office contacted our assistant
secretary regarding pressing forward
with the idea by arranging for their
representative, a Mr. TA Everitt of 21
Coomb Road S10, to call to discuss the
matter further.
The day after, Oxo got in on the act by
informing the club that they would also
make arrangements for the local rep
to call to discuss, but pointed out that
they were interested more in the idea
of around the pitch with large enamel
signs measuring 10 x 3 ft. I wonder what
happened to those. They would fetch a
fortune now on Bargain Hunt!
28 || UTB SHEFFIELD UNITED vs SOUTHAMPTON
It’s hard to imagine a time when the
only theatres in Sheffield City Centre
weren’t the Crucible and the Lyceum,
but before Hitler took an exception to
Sheffield’s industry around 1940 and
the developers of the ‘60s created
bland concrete boxes where once stood
beautiful architecture, we had a fair few
in the town. The Hippodrome and Empire
were huge, and as cinema began to really
find its feet there were names like The
Regent, Newsreel Theatre and The Albert
in Barker’s Pool. By 1933, the advent of
the talking picture was only a few short
years away, so things in that arena were
seriously getting big. That being the case,
Mr. Davison had targeted The Albert in
Barker’s Pool for a slice of their publicity
budget to give them a chance of putting
their name in front of a home crowd
every other week during the season.
Sadly their circuit manager, whatever
that was, by the name of E.B Dickinson
wrote to decline his cash, stating that the
advertising allocation for both was “fully
absorbed”. I think we can guess who Mr.
E.B Dickinson supported folks!

Letter from 1936 confirming the
end of roof sponsorship at the Lane
It seems a lifetime ago that tobacco
and sport went together. As a
reformed smoker myself, I couldn’t
wait for the Embassy World Snooker
Championships to come round. The
sight of one of their team clutching
complimentary cigarettes around town
for the duration was certainly appealing
to me at the time.
When people worked out the health
hazards of cigarettes, their time with all
forms of sport was always going to be
running out. Back in the ‘30s advertising
boom however, Imperial Tobacco
surprisingly swerved our advances
by simply stating that they were “not
in a position to take advantage of the
advertising site in question”. I mean,
what did they get offered? The inside
wall of the urinals behind the Kop? In
fact, we got the same response from
John Player and sons of Nottingham
as well. They went as far as to say that
“that type of advertising did not appeal
to them to any extent”. What, 45,000

people watching a game and gasping
for another Woodbine? Mind you, as we
already said, even the Pope smoked
back then, so maybe they didn’t see the
need to go out to push their product?
All I can say, reading through them,
is thank goodness for the Sheffield
Daily Independent, who arranged to
call and see Mr. Davison the following
day, kindly bringing along a Mr. Bottom
with him for good measure to show their
interest. Thanks also go to the Sheffield
Corporation Electricity Department
on Commercial Street who liked the
opportunity (the building is still there
and bears the name of Sheffield United
Gas Light Company on Commercial
Street – a lovely old Victorian building
that was once an all you can eat
Chinese restaurant and has sadly stood
empty now for a good few years). They
saw the light (sorry) and committed to
a three-year deal for the princely sum
of £50 per annum, with it firstly being
painted on the John Street roof and
latterly running parallel with the pitch,
and they paid in cold hard cash because
we have the receipts still to prove it!
There were a few others. We were
approached in December 1932 by
the New Imperial Motor Company of
Spring Road, Hall Green Birmingham,
to advertise their motor bikes. Can’t
find whether it went ahead, but, if it did
it didn’t really help as they went bust
in 1939! The name, incidentally, was
revived in the late noughties, but they
haven’t written to us since!
This stuff just keeps giving every
time I go through it, and it’s incredible
to think that something that’s such a
huge part of the game was in full flow
over 100 years ago. So, apart from
the products, maybe things haven’t
changed down the years that much
after all?

This week, we showcase some images
from back in 2004...
We’re only going back just over 20
years with these images of Bramall Lane,
but the transformation is quite obvious.
Barry Johnson got in touch with UTB to
send some imagery from an open day he
attended back in 2004.
As you can see from the main image
here, the gap between the Bramall Lane
end and the South Stand was vast.
It wouldn’t be long before this was
taken care of with the construction of the
corner stand and hotel which now smartly
fill out this once vacant area.
Also, note the old wooden seating in
the South Stand and the Bramall Lane
upper, something which also became a
thing of the past a year later.

Every week in UTB we look back over a day in Sheffield United history
as told through what we read in the Sheffield Star and Green ‘Un...
ead All About It
Tonight, it’s a new era for United as we go
back to August 1975 and the opening of
the new South Stand...
BACKGROUND...
After cricket at Bramall Lane was brought
to a conclusion in 1973, the club set out
plans to become a four-sided football
stadium with the new structure to be built
on the old cricket pitch. The new South
Stand was ready to open for the home
fixture against Derby County on August
16th 1975 but at a cost. The £1m spent
on the structure took Bramall Lane’s
capacity to 49,000, with 16,000 seats. The
two-year wait was now over, and despite
some tricky obstacles, the Lane was
now a stadium which mirrored its peers
across the game.
THE STORY...
United drew the first game of the season
1-1 against Derby, but the match became
secondary to the new structure which
can be seen in this aerial photograph
published in The Star newspaper. Tickets
34 || UTB SHEFFIELD UNITED vs SOUTHAMPTON
sold well for the new stand and, according
to this report, a crowd of over 31,000
reflected favourably to the new-look
ground. In this photo, you can still see
the old cricket pavilion behind the south
stand, a sight which would remain for a
few more years yet. In the story reviewing
the official opening, it was said chants
which before would filter out of the open
side would now echo around you, whilst
the impressive view also got a thumbs up.
WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?
Away from football, the main sports
story of the day featured the Ashes
clash at Headingley with England setting
Australia 445 to win the third Test. David
Steele was England’s hero as he made
a sparkling 92 as the hosts looked set
level the series going into the final Test
at The Oval. Meanwhile, United’s hosting
of Arsenal in midweek would see the
Blades showcase their Euro-standard new
floodlights for the first time, but talisman
Tony Currie was set to miss the occasion
through suspension.

made permanent in October 1989
Dave Bassett’s Blades were back
in the Second Division for the
1989/90 season and surprised
many of the game’s experts by once
again challenging for promotion.
As in the previous season, Bassett
was continually reviewing how he could
strengthen his team. He once again used
the loan market to sign winger/forward
Carl Bradshaw from Manchester City
in September 1989. Sheffield-born Carl
(and Unitedite) fitted into his squad’s
style and ethos and in October he joined
the Blades on a permanent deal.
The same month as Bradshaw’s initial
loan deal, utility player Wilf Rostron, who
was effective either at left wing-back or
in midfield, joined on loan from Sheffield
Wednesday.
He would join the Blades on a
free transfer at the end of November
1989. Both players played key roles
in helping the Blades secure backto-back
promotions at the end of the
1989/90 season.
Bassett also used the loan market to
allow players to regain match fitness
after injuries. Defender Cliff Powell joined
Cardiff City on loan in November 1989
where he sadly suffered a broken leg in
his only appearance for the Bluebirds.
This injury came on top of previous
injuries which eventually meant he was
forced to retire in 1991, aged 23. This
was Powell’s second loan out having
had a brief spell at Doncaster Rovers in
March 1989.
The 1990/91 season saw the Blades
back in the top flight for the first time
since the 1975/76 season. United once
again defied the odds by avoiding
relegation thanks to an amazing recovery
in the second half of the season. One of
the players who was a catalyst for this
fightback was Glyn Hodges, who was
signed initially on a loan deal in January

1991 from Crystal Palace. His midfield
prompting, plus the ability to score vital
goals, meant that the Blades found the
money to make the move permanent with
fans helping raise some of the finance.
As he had done previously, Bassett
liked to sign players he had worked with
at his former clubs. Forward Andy Sayer
was another such player who joined on
loan from Wimbledon. Sayer made only
three substitute appearances during his
loan spell.
The same season also saw a number
of players who had helped the club win
promotions previously, now surplus to
requirements. The loan system was used
to help such player gain much-needed
first-team action. Players loaned out for
this purpose were former captain Paul
Stancliffe to ex-club Rotherham United in
September 1990, midfielder Mark Todd
to Wolves in March 1991, defender Darren
Carr to Crewe in September 1990, striker
Peter Duffield to Rotherham United in
March 1991 and winger Paul Wood to
Bournemouth January 1991.
Glyn Hodges was a successful loan
which was made a full transfer in 1991

Alan Kelly
Alan Kelly started his playing
career as a full-back before
playing in goal where he, of
course, made his reputation as a
top-class performer.
His father, Alan Snr, was a goalkeeping
legend at Preston North End, and it was
no surprise when Alan also joined the
Lilywhites as an apprentice in September
1985. He made his Football League
debut for North End in March 1986.
Alan was signed for United by Dave
Bassett in July 1992 for a fee reportedly
in the range of £150 to 200K and during
the rest of his time at Bramall Lane, his
battle with Simon Tracey for the number
one spot saw both command spells
as first choice. Alan’s Football League
debut for United came at Spurs on 2nd
September 1992 when he replaced
outfield player Glyn Hodges who was
sacrificed after Tracey had been sent off.
Alan was a great professional and
gave great service to United. He was
popular with fans who regarded him as
a reliable and commanding presence
in goal. He played 216 league games
for United and left some wonderful
memories. Included amongst two of his
finest performances were outstanding

Alan’s last competitive appearance for

20th ANNIVERSARY
This season marks two decades since Sheffield United
ended a 12-year exile from the Premier League. After
several near misses since relegation from the elite in
1994, the 2005/06 campaign was finally the season
which saw the Blades return to English football’s
top table. Throughout this season, UTB will tell
the story of how Chris Morgan and co. helped guide
United back to the big time, celebrating 20 years
since the achievement by looking back through the
club’s internal and some external archives...
The Opening Shot...
Another statement signing for the Blades as
David Unsworth dropped out of the Premier
League on a permanent basis for the first
time in his career.
The 31-year-old signed a three-year deal after
the Blades agreed a deal with Portsmouth.
On arrival, he told BBC Radio Sheffield: “I’m
dropping out of the Premiership but just for a
season. This club can get promotion with the
squad that is here, I am certain of that. I have
been impressed with what I have seen.”

United gave notice of their intentions with
a notable win at Burnley.
Neil Shipperley bagged his first for the

With Andy Gray joining Sunderland,
United found themselves linked with
nearly every available striker in the
Championship. Whilst some links came
and went, there appeared to be some
substance behind a story appearing in
the Sheffield Star surrounding a possible
move for Birmingham’s Republic of

On the possibility of a move for
Morrison, Neil Warnock commented:

“Clinton’s people rang me up. But it goes

Reports also surfaced that United’s
assistant manager Stuart McCall had
watched Portsmouth striker Svetoslav
Todorov regarding a possible switch from
Fratton Park.
With transfer deadline day looming
large, it would be a busy end to the month
for the Blades.
100% record gone
After two wins from two, United tasted
defeat for the first time after losing 2-1
against Queens Park Rangers.
Marc Bircham and Stefan Moore put

Warnock said: “It was a drab game,
there was more action in the tunnel. But
I didn’t see any of it. Chris Morgan wanted
the match ball, and I wouldn’t let him

Brown to Blades?
Following defeat to QPR, the club
pressed ahead with a mission to add
some more firepower. Another striker in
the frame to be a replacement for Andy
Gray was Sunderland’s Chris Brown.
Following the Black Cats’ promotion to
the Premier League, Brown found himself
down the pecking order at the Stadium
of Light, and in terms of a like for like
replacement, he was the closest thing to
Gray who was available.
His name appeared in the media and
Warnock, known for accruing strikers,
commented that the 20-year-old was on
his radar. He said: “He’s someone I’ve
had a word about, but nothing is definite.”

With the game set to end all square,
Danny Webber pounced deep into

Preston had previously turned down a

There was a problem for United
though, with Leeds United also
expressing an interest in the former
Wednesday striker.
Warnock said: “I think Richard is

Transfer rumour and speculation have always produced a key topic of conversation for
football supporters. In this feature we look back on some of those which have involved
United down the years, and how close some of these ‘proposed’ deals came to fruition...
The umour Mill
In this edition, we’re taking you back to the
late 1960s where there was unrest as United
sold off some of their crown jewels...
THE PLAYER...
Scot Charlie Cooke began his
professional career in his native Scotland
with Aberdeen back in the early 1960s.
He was an instant success at Pittodrie,
playing over 30 league games in his first
season, despite still being 18. In his fourand-a-half-year
stint with the Dons, he
played over 160 games before switching
to Dundee in December 1964. In April
1966, he took the plunge and moved
south to try his hand in England when
Chelsea paid a club record £72,000 for
the winger as boss Tommy Docherty
looked to shape what was becoming an
impressive group of players. He netted
on his league debut against West Ham,
catching the eye with how he beat Bobby
Moore before scoring the winner. He
played in Chelsea’s 1967 FA Cup Final
defeat to Tottenham and looked firmly
established in the Chelsea side, but
the possibility of a move started to rear
its head a few months into the 1967/68

WHAT HAPPENED…
Birchenall did indeed move to Chelsea for

in the other direction to further anger
United’s supporters. United boss John

shortly before he nearly became a Blade

management. During his playing career

George Waller
Born in the Pitsmoor area
of the Steel City on 3rd
December 1864, George Waller
represented Pitsmoor and
Pyebank in the local leagues as a player
before signing for our city rivals, The
Wednesday, in 1885.
His last game for Wednesday came
in the FA Cup final at Kennington
Oval in 1890, where they lost 6-1 to
Blackburn Rovers.
It was intended that he would move
across the city but a deal to United fell
through and he joined Middlesbrough
instead. Two years later he finally made
the move to Sheffield United, though
first-team appearances were minimal. A
defender by trade, he played 10 times for
United, whilst featuring regularly for the
reserve team, Sheffield Strollers.
Waller was seen as an
innovator at Bramall Lane
This season Paul
Holland profiles a
member of United’s
backroom team from
down the years
telling the stories
of some of the club’s
unsung heroes...
In March 1894, when United were
short of players against Newton Heath
(later Manchester United), he filled in as
goalkeeper in a 2-0 win. He impressed
so much that he kept goal for the next
two matches despite regular ‘keepers
being available.
That summer he became trainer at
Bramall Lane, a role similar to today’s
physiotherapist. His insight and appetite
for learning made him an ideal candidate
in an era when team selection was
handled by committee and captain
rather than manager.
He remained trainer through United’s
golden generation: First Division
champions in 1898, FA Cup winners
in 1899 and 1902, runners-up in 1901,
and still at the club for later victories in
1915 and 1925.
George wasn’t just a trainer but
an innovator, pioneering the use of
a deeper inside-forward to link play
— a system United employed well
into the 1930s.
A fine cricketer, he played for Sheffield
United Cricket Club and appeared
three times for Yorkshire between
1893 and 1894.
After 36 years at Bramall Lane, he
retired in 1930 to run his sports shop
nearby. He died in Ecclesfield on 11th
December 1937.

Bobby Davison
No.4 – BOBBEE, BOBBEE, BOBBEE
Easter Monday, 1990. United are

rivals Leeds United. Dave Bassett
was known as a shrewd tactician
but on this occasion he was outdone
by Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson.
One of United’s most fruitful tactics was
goalkeeper Simon Tracey bringing the
ball out of his area and kicking towards
the corners for Brian Deane, Tony Agana
or Billy Whitehurst. Wilkinson knew that
if he stopped this, Leeds would have a
better chance of winning.
Stop it he did, and Bobby Davison
was the man to do it. Whenever Tracey
got the ball, Davison stood in front
of him. If Tracey tried to move to kick
the ball away, Davison shadowed him
and, if necessary, obstructed him.
This frustrated Tracey so much that he
dragged Davison down by the neck

and gave away a penalty. United were
stuffed 4-0 and although we followed
Leeds into Division One, our introduction
to Bobby Davison left us loathing him
with a passion.
By 1992, the sale of Tony Agana left
United without a regular partner for
Deane. Bassett tried Clive

Adrian Littlejohn,
Carl Bradshaw and

in Davison on loan from Leeds and
his old pal Alan Cork from Wimbledon
on a free transfer. Davison started
against Wednesday.
United couldn’t have wished for a
better start as Dane Whitehouse scored
after just four minutes. Then, in the 29th
minute, Davison struck. Simon Tracey
bowled the ball out to Carl Bradshaw.
“Down the right, a canter for Bradshaw”,
said YTV commentator John Helm.
As Bradshaw approached the halfway
line he saw Paul Rogers and Davison
approaching the penalty area. “Rogers
making progress, Davison calling for
it in the middle.” Bradshaw crossed.
“Davison’s coming for it,” said Helm,
and as Davison got a touch the ball
rebounded off Chris Woods and back
into his path. “Oh and he must score!
Bobby Davison!! Two nil United!”
Phil King got one back for Wednesday
and the game was in the balance.
Then after 68 minutes John Gannon,
on the right, hit a diagonal left-footed
cross towards the penalty spot where
Davison was lurking. John Helm once
more: “Gannon. He’ll float it in with the
left foot … it’s not a bad ball! It’s 3-1!!
Bobby Davison has glanced a second for
himself and a third for United!”

of modesty; “I quite enjoyed it… a good
night. It was just nice to start the game.
If you score it’s a bonus.” When Helm
asked him how difficult it was coming
into a new team in such a big game,
Davison replied, “It was easy. It was a
good night for strikers, wasn’t it? Just get
the ball in the box and get on the end of
things.” He finished with a shrug of the
shoulders, as if it was all in a day’s work,
which I suppose it was.
Davison was on the bench for next
game but this helped endear him even
more to Blades fans. As he warmed up
a new chant went up: “Bobbee, Bobbee,
Bobbee Davison!”, which he greeted
with a little wave.
He wasn’t at United long, we used to
hate him, he didn’t make hundreds of
appearances or rack up dozens of goals,
but he did score twice, on his debut,
against Wednesday, at Hillsborough,
and we won 3-1, and we did the double
over them. For this, Bobby Davison, you
are a hero.

Danny Ings
Danny Ings is optimistic United’s Sky Bet Championship
campaign will soon ignite with the experienced striker
hoping to have overcome a minor injury setback in time
to feature against his boyhood club tonight...
The Winchester-born marksman has
scored goals throughout his career
and joined the Blades in August
with the aim of hitting the ground
running, but individually, like it has
collectively, things haven’t come to
fruition as Danny would have hoped.
But having missed the last
three matches, since debuting at
Middlesbrough at the end of last
month, Danny has been working
around the clock in the hope of
making Chris Wilder’s matchday 20
this evening, and speaking exclusively
to UTB, he is focused on shifting
the momentum swing as quickly as
possible.
Danny commented: “Obviously
it has been largely frustrating since
I signed, we’ve not got the results
I hoped we would, and I had a small
injury setback. I’ve made sure I’m right
now though and I’m looking forward
to playing in front of our supporters at
Bramall Lane.
“From watching training from
a distance over the last couple of
weeks, to then joining back in ahead
of Tuesday night, I’ve seen how hard
the lads are working and football is
based on momentum a lot of the time,
good and bad momentum.
“The Charlton game for example
was an even game, it was spoilt by
the conditions, and it could have
gone either way in all honesty, but
when you are down, the moments
go against you. It is down to the lads
to turn things around as soon as
possible.”
Looking ahead to his possible
involvement this evening, and
therefore making his debut as a Blade
at Bramall Lane, having experienced
it as part of the opposition previously,
Danny says he’s solely focused on

helping contribute to the Blades
climbing the Championship ladder
and, in the process, opening the
seasonal account on home soil.
Danny, who is settled and content
residing in Yorkshire, having moved
across the country throughout
his career, continued: “I played at
Bramall Lane a couple of times for
Southampton, the second was in
Covid times, which was strange for
everyone, but from afar I know how
the fans are here. This club has had
ups and downs in recent times, but
it is a club with a fantastic history
and I’m just desperate to play some
football in front of them.
“I’ve moved around a lot in my
career, but like any new player moving
clubs, you just want to find your feet
around the training ground, integrate
the best you can and win a place in
the team. I’m delighted to be closing
in on a return and ready for the
challenge on the pitch.
“I’ve scored goals to help all the
clubs I’ve been at and that’s the
simple aim really. In recent weeks it
has been difficult, but it isn’t about any
one individual it is about the collective
and that is the team.
“We need to start building some
good momentum and a positive result
could swing it our way because things
can change so quickly in football. We
are on a bad run at present where
nothing has fallen for us, on a good
run you can win games when you’ve
not played well, that is why it is so
entertaining, especially in this league.
“I have lived up north for a good
seven years of my career, being at
Burnley and Liverpool, it gets harder
with the little one these days, but I’m
settled relatively local, it doesn’t affect
me, it is just harder for the family.
"There is a good group of lads
here and you spend that much
time together that you become
together almost instantly "
“There is also a social element at
any club when a lot of new players join
as you are often in the same part of
the city in hotels and going for dinner.
Recently it was myself and Mark
(McGuinness), then us and Ben (Mee)
joined us, I know him very well from
our days at Burnley. There is a good
group of lads here and you spend that
much time together that you become
together almost instantly.”
His ratio as a permanent Saint
across just over two years between
July 2019 and August 2021 was better
than a goal every two league starts,
scoring 34 times in 58 starts, and
Danny admits the south coast club
will always have a special place in his

heart, even though they rejected him
as a teenager.
Despite confessing to his Saints
allegiances, there is nothing the
marksman wants more on Tuesday
than a first United home win of the
campaign, with Danny unsure of the
reception he’ll receive from the visiting
supporters, some of whom are likely
to be amongst his closest friends.
He concluded: “Being born in
Winchester, Southampton was my
boyhood club, although I was upset
with them when I was young and
didn’t get in their academy, that was
difficult to understand at the time.
“But for me to experience
three fantastic seasons there was
incredible, especially with all my
friends and family being Saints fans.
It was amazing, and I loved every
minute of my time there and it is a
club I have the utmost respect for, and
it will always be close to my heart.
“But I’m a United player now and
on Tuesday night it will be fantastic if
we can beat them because I’m here to
win games of football. For those two
hours on Tuesday night, I want to be
on the pitch and hopefully scoring a
goal. It is always weird playing against
them, but it will be game on.
“I still speak to plenty of Saints
fans now and my time there was
memorable and absolutely some
of my happiest times in the game,
growing some great friendships and a
relationship with the fans. Who knows
whether they will clap me or boo,
I won’t let it affect me.”

SUPPORTERS CLUB
Good evening and respect to the supporters
of our visitors Southampton for making
the long journey here with the prospect of
not getting home until the early hours of
tomorrow morning – that’s dedication as a
supporter.
Talking of dedication, it was a pleasure
to see the number of our supporters who
attended the last home game to welcome back
the return of the legend that is Chris Wilder
and his team as we prepare to go on another
memorable journey together.
Now that the summer is over and the student
population is back in residence, we can report
that our next home game against Watford will
see the return of our normal matchday social
activity at the Sidney and Matilda. Thank you
for your patience over the last few games when
we have had to share the space with other
events taking place.
Enjoy the game.

United’s U21s continued their impressive
unbeaten start to the season in all
competitions after a 3-1 success against
Huddersfield Town recently.
After getting the Premier League Cup
campaign off to a winning start against Derby
thanks to goals from Max Asante-Boakye and
Zach Giggs, the Blades then downed Millwall
2-0 in the league with goals from Louie Marsh
and Dovydas Sasnauskas.
United then fielded a strong side for the
hosting of Huddersfield with the likes of Femi
Seriki, Tyler Bindon, Nils Zätterström and
Ryan Oné all featuring.
But it was Marsh who maintained his
impressive form, netting twice with Bindon
heading in a third as United came back from a
goal down to win against the Terriers.
The win keeps the Blades top of the
Professional Development Leaue.

United’s U18s recently picked up a good
win over Millwall but were pegged back in a
clash against Watford as Jim O’Brien’s side
had some mixed results in the Professional
Development League.
In the clash in South London against
the Lions, the game was level at half-time
before the Blades took full control with a fine
second half.
Less than five minutes after the break,
United opened the scoring when Jaydon
Makhalira’s dangerous low ball was tapped
in at the back post by Cole Hay for his first
Blades goal.
Sub Charlie Bulmer added a second with a
first time shot, and a third followed when Siem
Eyob-Abraha sprinted clear to round off a fine
performance.
The Blades then went into the clash against
Watford and moved into a 2-0 lead with Eyob-
Abraha netting twice before the break.
But the Hornets rallied after the interval
with three goals in 20 minutes to seal
maximum points.

United began their Women’s League Cup
campaign with a solid 1-1 draw at Durham,
with the Blades collecting the bonus point
after winning the penalty shootout.
Going into the game off the back of a
narrow 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton
Park, the Blades rotated the team for the trip
to Maiden Castle.
There was a start for Molly Graham who
made a first appearance in 12 months
following a long road back from injury, whilst
new emergency loan signing Katie Keane
made her debut in goal.
Joy Ralph netted her first for the Blades
after the ball dropped to her from a corner,
but this was cancelled out when the same
player was unfortunate to glance a corner into
her own net.
The match went to penalties with Keane the
hero in the shootout, saving twice, as United
nicked the bonus point.

BUILDING MENTAL
FITNESS TOGETHER
Talk Club is a mental health charity
dedicated to enhancing men’s
mental fitness through structured
talking groups.
These groups encourage participants to
assess their wellbeing by asking, “How are
you? Out of 10?” and then sharing the reasons
behind their rating. This practice helps build
self-awareness, resilience and community
support. On average, attending a Talk Club
session has been shown to improve mental
fitness by over 15%.
Here at Sheffield United Community
Foundation, we offer weekly sessions aimed
at providing a safe and confidential space for
men aged 18 and over to share their feelings
and connect with others. These gatherings
are run by trained coaches and take place
every Wednesday, 6pm-8pm at the Blades
Family Hub on John Street.
Participating in Talk Club offers
several benefits, including:
Enhanced Mental Fitness: Regular
engagement helps men better understand
and articulate their emotions, contributing to
improved mental wellbeing.
Community Support: The group setting gives
a sense of belonging and mutual support
among participants.
Skill Development: Activities during
sessions promote social interaction and
recreational skills.
By joining Talk Club, men in Sheffield can
proactively manage their mental health in a
supportive community environment.
To get involved, simply turn up on the night.

FOOT Y PHONICS
At Sheffield United Community
Foundation, we’re proud to report
about the positive impact our Footy
Phonics sessions have had on local
school children.
Footy Phonics is an active literacy
intervention from Premier League
Primary Stars and is designed for children
aged 3-7. The programme helps children
develop essential phonics skills by
combining physical activity with phonics
learning, supporting their reading and
understanding of unfamiliar words.
Since introducing Footy Phonics to a
girls-exclusive group at Carfield Primary,
the children have shown improvements
in confidence with reading and are more
eager to attempt new words. Teachers
have reported that pupils who were
previously reluctant are now more
engaged, particularly during the active
learning parts of the sessions.
“All the girls who have been involved
in the footy phonics sessions have
made really good progress,” said Rachel
Vickers, teacher at Carfield Primary.
“They’ve absolutely loved it and there’s
been a huge improvement in their
confidence in reading and their ability to
read a variety of text. Many of them have
moved up in their reading and writing
groups which is really positive for them,
and for us as teachers too.”
Miss Vickers added: “I think it’s made
them feel like a part of a group, and for
some of them it’s had a massive impact
on their teamwork and their athleticism
as some of the girls don’t always get the
opportunity to take part in after-school
clubs. It’s been nice to see them getting
involved in football in and out of these
sessions too. They’ve absolutely loved it,
and it’s been such a positive impact for
the school.”

OLD FACES...
I’ll begin today by saying
what a pleasure it was to
have Bob Hatton back as
my guest for the last home
game against Charlton. He
was great company, and it’s
wonderful to see him doing
so well. He joined me for a
meal alongside his old strike
partner Keith Edwards, so it
was brilliant to hear all the
old stories. There was also
a reunion with some of the
old boys from the 1981/82
season, so it was nice for
Bob to catch up and for me
to see some familiar names
again. I also saw Sean Bean
at the game, it’s been a while
since I’d seen him, so that
was also nice to have a chat,
and mention When Saturday
Comes and the recent 30-
year anniversary. You will
remember I starred alongside
him in that film, but I spurned
the Hollywood career to stay
loyal to the Blades!
SOUTHAMPTON...
It’s been a few years since
we played Southampton, but
whenever they are in town
it brings back memories of
some great teams from my
playing days in the ‘70s and
‘80s. During my time with
England, I played alongside
many with Southampton
connections. I remember
playing with the likes of Mick
Channon, Martin Chivers,
Kevin Keegan, Peter Shilton,
Alan Ball, Mick Mills, Peter
Osgood and Dave Watson –
they all played for the Saints
at one time or another. Some
real legends there, and in
the case of Dave Watson,
I still see him regularly at
the various Memory Club
meetings we attend together.
THE DELL...
When I think of Southampton,
I also think of The Dell. We
never seemed to get a good
result there when I was a
player. It was such a unique
place, so enclosed, it was like
the stands were hanging over
you! I do remember a couple
of United home games when
we had a good result against
them, one of which I scored
in, and my old mate Alan
Woodward bagged a hat-trick
as we won 4-2 in December
1973. Great days!
All the best to Chris
and the lads tonight, and
as always, proud to be
one of you!
UTB!

RAINBOW
BLADES
Growing up, Saturdays at Bramall
Lane were the highlight of my
week. I would catch the 81 bus
down Ecclesall Road with my dad,
and drink pre-match pints of Cider
(him) and Coke (me) at the now
demolished Devonshire Arms.
We’d take our seats at the
back of the Arnold Laver Stand
and cheer on the Blades. I went
to Uni in 2013 where I was involved in the
LGBTQ+ society, and other than an ill-fated trip to
Wembley in 2014, I didn’t really follow football.
I returned to Sheffield in 2016, just as Chris
Wilder took over as manager for the first time.
I followed our highs and lows from League One
up to the Premier League and fell back in love
with Sheffield United.
Learning of Rainbow Blades in 2021, I joined
immediately. Whether or not you are part of the
LGBTQ+ community, there is space for you in
Rainbow Blades. We have pre-match socials
before every home game, regular non-matchday
socials and an active WhatsApp group.
Having a strong LGBTQ+ supporters group
brings me such pride as a queer woman, and I’m
excited to get more involved as a
committee member this year.

BACKROOM TEAM
STRENGTHENED...
Chris Wilder has strengthened his
backroom team with the appointment
of Guilherme Ramos as United’s new
first team coach.
Following his recent appointment, the
Blades boss confirmed he would again
be joined by long-time staff members
Alan Knill and Matt Prestridge.
Wilder also explained further
appointments would follow, with
the respected Ramos adding a new
dimension to the coaching team.
On the appointment, Wilder said: “As
I said to the media when I returned, I was
keen to use the opportunity to try and
freshen up the coaching side. Guilherme
is someone I’ve been aware of for a
while now, and he adds something a
little different which will complement the
talents of Alan, Matt and Micky Collins.”

Played Twice, Managed Thrice...
With Chris Wilder’s return as manager, this article is
about those who have had two separate spells as a player
and three separate spells as manager at the same league
club, not including spells as caretaker managers nor as a
player/manager.
It is quite likely I have missed some and, if so, please let
me know on blades195451@yahoo.com. I am grateful to
Dave Burkinshaw for some of the names mentioned.

Chris has now joined the smaller group with two spells as a player and three as manager.
I have found only two others to achieve this. A summary of the three is below with the club
