WELCOME

BACK!

IT’S THE FIRST MIDWEEK GAME OF THE

SEASON HERE AT PRIDE PARK STADIUM

AND DERBY COUNTY FOOTBALL CLUB

WELCOMES OUR OPPONENTS CHARLTON

ATHLETIC THIS EVENING.

Tonight's fixture, the 92nd first-team meeting between

the two clubs, brings the sides back together for the

first time since a League One clash in February 2024.

The Rams were on their way to promotion that season,

but the Addicks got the better of that particular East

Midlands encounter.

Eiran Cashin put Derby ahead before half-time,

but Alfie May scored from the penalty spot before

teenager Karoy Anderson scored his first senior goal

to earn Charlton a shock win - the Addicks’ first victory

since November 2023.

Of course, the most famous meeting between the

sides came at Wembley Stadium on 27th April 1946

when the Rams beat Charlton 4-1 to lift the FA Cup for

the first – and so far only – time in the club’s history.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD:

THE RAM

DERBY WINS: 39 (best: 5-0 (h), on two occasions)

CHARLTON WINS: 32 (best: 6-1 (h), 26th Sep 1959)

THE RAM

FROM THE HEAD COACH

JOHN EUSTACE

DERBY COUNTY’S HEAD COACH JOHN EUSTACE GIVES HIS

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS AHEAD OF TONIGHT'S GAME.

The games are continuing to come thick

and fast before the second international

break of the season, and - following

Saturday’s match at Wrexham - we have

back-to-back fixtures on the horizon

this week here at Pride Park against

Charlton Athletic and Southampton.

We head into tonight’s match under the

floodlights after coming from behind

to earn a 1-1 draw at Wrexham on

Saturday. We got ourselves into some

good attacking areas in both halves,

but we need to be a bit more ruthless in

the final third. That will come, however,

because we have some excellent

players going forward. After falling

behind, I thought the reaction of the

team was excellent and Ben Brereton

Díaz's goal was superbly taken. We

wanted to win, of course, but we got

a valuable point at a difficult place

against a strong team and it will be a

good point for us moving forward.

We were frustrated in our last home

fixture against Preston North End

ten days ago, mostly for the way we

performed in the first half of the 1-0

defeat. We were positive and on the front

foot in the second half and had several

chances to equalise, but it wasn’t our

day. That happens in the Championship,

and it was an afternoon decided by

one moment of quality. Despite the

disappointment we felt on the day, there

were encouraging aspects to our play in

that second half that we can build on in

the weeks and months ahead.

It has always been clear that things

are going to take time for us this year;

we are, gradually, seeing players return

to fitness. Sondre Langås, Owen Beck

and Corey Blackett-Taylor have been

the latest to step up their comebacks

this month after spells out due to injury,

while players such as Patrick Agyemang

and Lars-Jørgen Salvesen have made

their returns recently. On top of that,

we’ve got a few players that have

only been with us for a short period

of time, and they naturally need time

and patience to become settled into

understanding what we want from them.

While we continue to make our way

through the rebuilding process with this

squad, to make Derby County a strong

and competitive side at this level, we

know the importance of not getting too

high or too low with results along the

way. What has encouraged us all with the

group we have assembled is, regardless

of the results, their determination and

desire to do the right things to develop

and improve as individuals and as a team.

There is a great spirit within the group,

and that gives us great encouragement

for the future, as well as a desire to do the

right things.

This evening’s fixture against Charlton

Athletic will provide us with another

tough assignment. Nathan Jones’ sides

are notoriously difficult to play against,

and as another of the teams making

the step up from League One, they will

be looking to make an impact back in

the Championship this year. They have

recruited well since their promotion,

adding to an already good squad, so

once again it will not be an easy fixture.

Thank you for your support and enjoy

the game.

John Eustace

MATCH REPORT

WREXHAM 1

DERBY COUNTY 1

SAT 27TH SEP 2025 – STŌK CAE RAS – ATTENDANCE: 10,613

Derby County came from

behind to secure a point

on the road in the Sky Bet

Championship with a 1-1

draw at Wrexham.

The first 45 minutes saw the

two sides battling to take the

lead, but both defences held

firm and neither team could

break the deadlock.

Lewis O’Brien headed

Wrexham in front after an

hour of play, minutes after

Max Johnston and Carlton

Morris had both gone close

for the Rams.

However, a superb curving

strike from Ben Brereton

Díaz levelled the scoring

with just under 20 minutes

left - his first goal for the

club since joining on loan

from Southampton - to earn a

deserved share of the spoils.

MACMILLAN COFFEE

MORNING SUCCESS

Derby County Football

Club, Derby County

Community Trust and Clowes

Developments (UK) Ltd

linked up to host a Macmillan

Coffee Morning at Pride Park

Stadium last week.

The event took place in the

Toyota Suite and raised over

£1,000 in valuable funds for

Macmillan Cancer Support.

In addition to hot drinks,

breakfast and cakes, there

were several fundraising

activities to get involved with,

including a raffle and games,

with all proceeds supporting

Macmillan Cancer Support.

It was confirmed earlier

this month that Macmillan

will be Derby County’s

new designated charity

partner for the 2025/26 and

2026/27 seasons.

The organisation, which was

founded in 1911 by Douglas

Macmillan, is one of the

leading UK charities.

From the moment someone

is diagnosed with cancer, it

provides them with all the

information, support and

guidance they need.

Macmillan’s mission is to

do whatever it takes to get

every person with cancer

the best support today and

spark a revolution in cancer

care for the future.

Derby County Football Club,

Derby County Community

Trust, and Clowes

Developments (UK) Ltd

would like to thank everyone

who joined us to support

Macmillan last Tuesday.

ABOUT MACMILLAN

Macmillan has spent more

than 100 years helping

people living with cancer.

From the moment someone

is diagnosed with cancer,

they are there to support

with all the information,

support and guidance they

need, to help everyone with

cancer live life as fully as

they can.

Macmillan know that cancer

can disrupt people’s whole

lives and affects everyone

differently. Cancer impacts

more than just physical

health; it can impact

relationships, jobs, finances,

emotional wellbeing, and so

much more. It can be made

worse simply because of who

you are and where you live.

Cancer affects more people

in the UK than ever before,

with nearly 3.5 million

currently living with the

disease - and the number is

still climbing.

Right now, cancer care

isn’t fair across the UK,

and there are unacceptable

differences in the care and

support people are getting.

Some people aren’t getting

the treatment or support

they need because it isn’t

available where they live,

or it is only available for

certain types of cancer.

Macmillan is doing whatever

it takes to help more people

with cancer get the best care

the UK has to offer, whoever

and wherever they are.

They are 98% funded by

donations, so fundraising is

vital to support people living

with cancer.

THE RAM

INTRODUCING CHARLTON ATHLETIC, AKA:

THE ADDICKS

AF TER FIVE SEASONS IN LEAGUE ONE ENDED WITH PROMOTION

THROUGH THE PLAY-OFFS IN MAY, NATHAN JONES’ TEAM ARE GET TING

USED TO LIFE BACK IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP ONCE AGAIN…

It’s hard to believe that over

the last decade, this season

is only Charlton’s second in

the top EFL division.

After dropping out of the

Championship at the end

of the 2015/16 campaign,

eight of the nine completed

seasons since have been

in League One. Lee Bowyer

oversaw a successful

promotion challenge in 2019,

but life back in the second

tier lasted only one term.

That recent history has made

the south east London club

even more determined to

make sure they are equipped

to stay up this time, though

– as all Rams fans know

very well – the step up into

the Championship is a steep

one. Derby survived a first

season back on the final

day last May, and if Charlton

achieve the same fate this

season there will be smiling

faces at The Valley.

Manager Nathan Jones,

who has been in charge

since February 2024, knows

what it takes to create a

team capable of firing up

through the leagues having

been the initial architect of

Luton Town’s miraculous

rise. He left for Stoke City

with the Hatters heading

for their second of three

quick promotions, but the

building blocks for the future

successes had been put in

place.

Now he is hoping to repeat

the journey with Charlton,

though the Addicks are

starting from a division

higher. His first part-season

saw the club finish 16th in

League One, then last term

he guided them to fourth and

promotion though the playoffs

after beating Leyton

Orient at Wembley.

Last season they were built

on defensive solidity. They

kept a club record amount

of clean sheets - 26, in all

competitions. They are really

difficult to break down,

especially when they take

the lead, which meant they

dropped very few points

from winning positions.

To enhance that solidity

Jones has brought in three

players – two defenders

and a goalkeeper – who

were at Luton Town last

year, but the other seven

first-team summer signings

have been brought in to

create chances at the other

end of the field. The likes of

Harvey Knibbs from Reading,

Charlie Kelman from QPR,

Rob Apter from Blackpool

and Isaac ‘Tanto’ Olaofe

from Stockport County have

increased their goal threat.

Following Saturday's 3-0

home win over Blackburn

Rovers, the Addicks had

won two, drawn two and lost

two of their opening seven

games of the Championship

season, starting the

campaign with a 1-0 victory

over Watford and winning

by the same scoreline at

Sheffield United ten days

ago – spoiling Chris Wilder’s

return to Bramall Lane with a

90th minute Olaofe winner.

The Belgium

international, who won

his only cap so far last

year against Ireland,

has played in English

football for the last

five years having

first joined Blackburn

Rovers in 2020. The

32-year-old played 118

games for the Ewood

Park club before

stepping up to the

Premier League with

Luton Town, winning

the league’s Save of

the Season Award for

2023/24. He signed

for Charlton in July

after two years at

Kenilworth Road.

Like Kaminski,

29-year-old defender

Burke moved from

Luton Town to

Charlton during the

summer having been

with the Bedfordshire

club for four seasons,

therefore helping the

Hatters reach the topflight.

He started with

West Ham United,

where he was capped

to Under-20s levels

by England, but really

came into his own

after joining Hull City

in 2018 and he played

110 games across

three years of service

for the Tigers.

Originally on the

books of Liverpool –

though never making

a senior appearance

for the Reds – Jones,

who turns 30 next

week, has played most

of his 235 league

games in League One

and League Two but

has helped clubs win

promotion four times,

including back-to-back

step-ups with Luton

Town in 2018 and

2019. He joined the

Addicks in 2023 from

Cambridge United

and signed a new

extended contract

earlier this year.

Born in Burton-on-

Trent and a Jamaican

international, the

31-year-old is another

of the defensive

unit to have played

for Luton Town last

season. He was

signed by Charlton

in the summer after

his release by the

Hatters following

four years – and 137

league games – with

them. He started with

Birmingham City but

found his feet with

Fleetwood Town

and also played for

Blackburn Rovers.

five seasons with

Dunfermline Athletic

before trying life in

the EFL with Charlton

in June 2024. The

25-year-old made 38

league appearances

for the Addicks in last

season’s promotion

campaign.

Released by hometown

club Norwich

24-year-old midfielder

has worked his way

into the professional

game through

non-league – most

notably with King’s

Lynn Town. Shining

for the National

League club brought

a move into the

Championship with

Blackpool and, after

133 games for the

Seasiders, he signed

for Charlton in the

summer as a free

Born in England,

the 25-year-old

represents the

Republic of Ireland

at international level

and is the country’s

all-time record holder

for most appearances

at Under-21 level with

28 caps. He

developed in the West

Ham United youth

system and enjoyed

loans to Lincoln

City, Peterborough

United, MK Dons and

Rotherham United

before making the

permanent switch to

Charlton in January

last year. Since then,

he has hardly missed

a game.

After more than 100

games for Hamilton

Academical, mostly

in the Scottish

Premiership, the

29-year-old signed

for his boyhood club

Rangers in January

2018. He spent two

and a half seasons at

Ibrox before heading

south to join Hull City,

where he became

a first team regular

and helped the

Tigers to promotion

from League One in

2021. He repeated

the achievement in

his first season with

Charlton last term.

THE RAM

charlton athletic legend:

DEREK HALES

IN A RECENT POLL, DEREK HALES WAS NAMED AS

THE SECOND BEST CHARLTON ATHLETIC PLAYER OF ALL

TIME – JUST BEHIND MID-CENTURY GOALKEEPING GREAT

SAM BARTRAM – BUT THE BURLY STRIKER HAD A TOUGH

TIME AF TER HIS BIG-MONEY MOVE TO THE RAMS…

Born in 1951 in rural Kent,

Derek Hales was in his early

twenties when he joined

Charlton Athletic, having

turned out a few times for

non-league Dartford and

then Luton Town before

heading to The Valley. But,

as soon as he landed in

south-east London, he knew

he was ‘home’.

He is the Addicks’ all-time

leading goal scorer, netting

168 times in all competitions

in 368 matches, during two

spells, with his most prolific

season being 1975/76, when

he scored 28 league goals

and was the leading scorer

in the Second Division.

It was a few months

after that campaign, and

with Derby struggling in the

First Division, that Rams

manager Colin Murphy

20

persuaded the club to spend

£330,000 on Hales.

Although the then 25-yearold

centre forward failed

to impress in his first five

games, a goal in an FA Cup

victory against Blackpool

followed by two superb

strikes in a 4-2 league win

over Newcastle United three

days later seemed to suggest

the huge fee was justified.

Unfortunately, it proved

to be a false dawn, and

it took Hales another 17

appearances to score three

more before his season

ended prematurely when he

was stretchered off against

Sunderland with damaged

ankle ligaments.

When Derby gained just

two points from their opening

five fixtures of the following

season, Murphy was replaced

by Tommy Docherty. Hales

did not feature in the new

manager’s plans and was

soon offloaded to West

Ham United for a cut-price

£110,000.

His time at Upton Park was

marginally more successful

but he returned to Charlton

in 1978 and quickly re-found

his golden touch in front

of goal, scoring another 76

goals in 191 league games

before finishing his career at

Gillingham.

SENT OFF.. AND

SACKED!

In January 1979, Derek

Hales and Charlton

team-mate Mike

Flanagan were both

sent off in an FA Cup tie

for fighting one another.

The flare-up occurred

in the third round tie

at home to non-league

Maidstone United when

Flanagan hesitated

before playing Hales

through, causing him

to be called offside.

The two began arguing

and Hales lashed out at

Flanagan, who returned

with a punch.

The Charlton Board

decided to sack Hales

for his part in the

incident, but he was

later re-instated and

instead had to pay a fine

of two week’s wages.

Manager Jim Smith was convinced of Deon Burton’s potential when the

Rams splashed £1 million in signing the then 20-year-old striker in 1997.

Burton would struggle to establish a starting role on a regular basis at

Derby, playing intermittently with loans at other clubs including Stoke in

February 2002 and a second spell at Portsmouth, which began in August

2002. He returned to Derby in September having broken a bone in his foot

but later signed permanently for Portsmouth once again in December

2002 for a fee rising to £250,000.

He also became a frequent fixture for the Jamaica international team,

having initially made his debut for the Reggae Boyz in 1997. His move

to Charlton came six years after his time with the Rams and was initially

a loan from Sheffield Wednesday. Burton couldn’t prevent the Addicks

being relegated in the 2008/09 season, but prospered in League One the

following term, scoring 14 goals in 44 appearances.

He left to join Tony Adams’ Gabala FC in the Azerbaijan Premier League

at the end of that season before ending his career with Gillingham,

Scunthorpe United, York City and a number of non-league clubs.

st | darren bent games: 84, goals: 28 | games: 79, goals: 37

If Derek Hales was Charlton’s goalscoring hero of the 1970s, then Darren

Bent filled the same role for a pair of prolific campaigns two decades ago.

Signed from first club Ipswich Town in June 2005 for an initial £2.5

million fee, the fleet-footed front man netted 31 goals in only 68 Premier

League appearances and earned the first of his 13 England caps.

He scored in his first four appearances for the club and was the highest

scoring Englishman in the Premier League in 2005/06 with 18 goals,

which made him third highest scorer overall.

He couldn’t stop the Addicks being relegated at the end of the 2006/07

season and that summer he moved to Spurs in a £16.5 million deal. Goalladen

seasons followed at White Hart Lane, as well as for Sunderland and

Aston Villa, where he joined Derby on loan during the second half of the

2014/15 season.

Ten goals in 15 Championship appearances led to a permanent switch

at the end of his Villa Park contract and he went on to score another 18

times for the Rams before ending his career with Burton Albion in 2019.

eimann netted seven

goals in 30 Sky Bet

W Championship outings

for Rovers last term, and,

after having his season

curtailed to have a knee

operation in March, the

attacker opted to rejoin

Derby as a free agent ahead

of the 2025/26 season.

In his first stint at the club,

Weimann featured 33 times

as the Rams reached the

play-offs in 2015/16.

A short loan stint with

Wolverhampton Wanderers

on loan in January 2017

followed before he returned

to Pride Park to enjoy his

best campaign in black and

white, recording five goals

and six assists as Derby

reached the play-offs again

in 2017/18, but they fell

short against Fulham in the

semi-finals.

Now back with the Rams,

Weimann brings a wealth of

Championship experience,

having featured 216 times

for Bristol City, 13 times

for West Bromwich Albion

and 34 times for Blackburn

Rovers - scoring plenty of

goals in the process.

The attacker is now looking

to make his mark in a Derby

shirt once more - his 84thminute

winning goal after

coming off the bench against

West Bromwich Albion at

The Hawthorns just over two

weeks ago got him underway

for the season.

Weimann has also frequently

represented his nation,

Austria, on the international

stage with 26 caps to his

name. He was also a part

of the Austrian squad for

their 2024 UEFA European

Championship campaign.

The versatile forward sat

down with The Ram to talk

about making his return to

the club, learning from John

Eustace and bringing his

second-tier know-how into

the Derby squad.

Q: Andi, you’ve been

back with the club for

three months now. How are

you finding being back at

Derby County?

A: I’ve been enjoying it.

It was nice to see some

familiar faces around the

training ground when I came

back in. It’s good to be back

closer to home, too, which

helps when settling in well

with the squad.

THE RAM

Then there is Danny Batth,

I’m already in with them.

It always takes a little bit

of time for a group to gel -

especially when there are 13

new players coming in. The

changing room is getting

better and better as we go

on. I’m looking forward to

us really growing as a group

THE CHANGING ROOM IS GETTING BETTER

GROUP THIS SEASON.

Q: You mentioned your

former Blackburn teammates,

you also used to drive

in to training with Danny

Batth - it must be good to

join the squad at the same

time as a close friend?

A: Yes, it’s good to have

familiar faces around!

We drove in together at

Blackburn as you said, so I

spent a bit of time with him!

We don’t drive in together

anymore because it’s a bit

of a different route here, but

he’s a really good mate now.

It’s nice being at another club

with him.

On the pitch, he’s been

around the Championship

as well for a long, long time.

He’s a great professional, a

great player - the kind that

you want to have in a squad.

Q: When you came back to

Derby County, it was a return

to the club after seven years

away. How do you reflect on

the time that you had here in

the past?

A: I enjoyed the three years

I was here. Especially with

the friends I still speak to

now. From a footballing

point of view, it probably

wasn’t as good as I wanted

it to be on a personal basis.

I wanted to play more; I

wanted to play better.

We missed out twice in

the play-offs as well. When

I had signed here before,

the clear aim was to get

promoted to the Premier

League. Ultimately, we didn’t

achieve our goal. Therefore,

there’s unfinished business

here for me.

Q: And you come in now,

a few years on, would you

say you have changed as a

player since your last stint

with Derby?

A: I’m definitely a different

kind of player now. Ten years

ago, I was probably a little

bit quicker and sharper! But

now I have the experience.

In the last couple of years, I

have been more of a player

who knows where to be in

the box, to get those goals,

get those strikers’ goals kind

of thing. I think you learn

that from experience. That’s

what I am now, a player who

always backs himself to get

a chance every game I play in

and also take it.

Q: How big a factor was

John Eustace in your

decision to move here in the

summer, and how do you

find him as a head coach?

A: I played with him 15 years

ago when I was at Watford

on loan from Aston Villa, so

I met him then and already

had that connection of

playing with him. As a head

27

THE RAM

coach last season, I just

enjoyed working with him

and his way of operating.

He’s really intense on the

training pitch and looks

at the opposition in detail,

watching many games to

figure out the best possible

tactics to beat them.

He’s also a very honest

person. He’ll tell you straight.

With every team he’s been

at, he’s created a real culture

where everyone’s together,

fighting for each other. I

really loved that last year,

and when I had the chance

to work with him again,

I couldn’t turn down the

opportunity.

Q: Did you set yourself any

targets coming into the

season?

A: For me, I always take

things one step at a time.

When I signed, I was still

injured. First of all, the

28

THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS SHOW THE

GAFFER WHAT YOU CAN DO - THERE’S

NOTHING BETTER THAN GETTING THE

WINNING GOAL!

target was getting back to

full fitness, which I think I

am now. Now, it’s just about

kicking on.

I think just playing as much

as I can has to be the main

target. Like I said earlier, I

back myself to score goals.

If I get the chance, it’s

obviously scoring as many

goals as I can.

Q: You showed that instinct

at West Bromwich Albion

with your goal there to win

the game - was it good to

get that first goal under your

belt this season?

A: Of course. When the ball

landed on my feet, I just tried

to take a good first touch.

And then there were lots of

bodies in front of me. If I had

shot earlier, I would have

got blocked. I just had to

be patient and wait for one

of the defenders to make a

move and kind of lift their

leg and then it was about

squeezing the ball through

their legs. Luckily, it crept

into the bottom corner and

it was an amazing feeling to

celebrate with the fans.

Every player will tell you they

want to play from the start,

but when you’re a substitute

and you come on, the only

thing you can do is show

the gaffer what you can do

THE RAM

- there’s nothing better than

getting the winning goal!

It was a long time coming,

too, as the two games before

saw us get draws against

Ipswich Town and Bristol

City. That first win is always

something to build on, so

I’m glad to help the team.

We need to keep pushing

forward now.

Q: You’ve also had time

on international duty

with Austria this season.

How important is playing

international football for

you?

A: It’s brilliant going away

to represent your nation.

Austria have some really,

really good players. I really

enjoy going and I still learn

a lot going away with that

different group.

We have been playing in the

World Cup qualifiers at the

moment, and we’ve started

really well. That’s a massive

dream, to be involved in

the World Cup. Hopefully, I

can keep playing here, keep

playing well, keep scoring

goals and then keep getting

the call-ups.

Q: Do you think it helps to be

part of two different squads

with club and country?

A: It’s nice to have that

change of scenery and

great to be involved with

both. The players with

Austria play at some really

big clubs now, and the

manager, Ralf Rangnick,

is a well-respected person

in the game as well.

It’s great to have those

other perspectives and

experiences, picking up

things from both managers

and learning more about the

game.

Q: Is your experience

something you look to bring

into the squad?

A: As I said earlier, on the

pitch I’ve probably not got

the pace that I used to have.

I would say my strength

used to be running in behind

the defence and things like

that. Now, it’s probably more

about picking up pockets and

picking up spaces in the box.

Then off the pitch, I’m more

confident to say things after

games and out on the pitch.

Because you’ve seen it all,

everyone listens. And in this

group, everyone speaks,

too. That’s what I found and

enjoyed with the gaffer last

year as well. I always try

to be here, smile and make

everyone happy; hopefully, I

can contribute both on and

off the pitch.

DERBY MAKE IT THREE

WINS IN THREE WITH

SPORTING KHALSA AWAY

TRIUMPH

The Ewes secured their first

away win of the FA Women’s

National League Northern

Premier Division season with

a hard-fought 1-0 success

over Sporting Khalsa at the

Guardian Warehousing Arena.

Substitute Georgia Stevens’

composed second-half strike

was the difference between

the sides as the Ewes picked

up their third win on the

bounce in all competitions.

The hosts piled on the

pressure in the closing stages

in search of an equaliser, but

firm defending secured all

three points for the Ewes.

The victory sees Sam

Griffiths’ side move three

points above Khalsa in the

Northern Premier Division

table and into eighth spot.

Head Coach Griffiths named

an unchanged starting XI

from the previous weekend’s

2-0 win over Halifax at the

Don Amott Arena, making

just one change to the squad

as defender Eve Shepherd

replaced goalkeeper Sarah

Morgan on the bench.

It was a lively start to the

match, with both sides

looking dangerous on the

break. The Ewes’ first sight

of goal came when Olivia

Edwards’ cross-come-shot

looped onto the roof of the

Khalsa net early on.

30

Minutes later, Jess Melrose

threaded an inch-perfect

through ball to Yasmin

Mason, who had made a

marauding run down the left

flank. Mason’s stinging strike

was parried away by the

Khalsa goalkeeper to keep the

game on level terms.

The Ewes threatened

again shortly after, as they

continued to ask questions

of the Khalsa backline.

Minnie Wilson unleashed

a thunderous strike from

distance, which looked as

though it was destined to

nestle in the top corner, but

eventually sailed wide.

Kate Oakley blazed an

audacious strike towards goal

from distance moments later,

but the Khalsa shot stopper

was equal to it, collecting

comfortably.

Melrose then had the Ewes’

best chance of the half, as

the wing-back rifled a shot

across goal towards the

bottom corner after finding

herself in acres of space on

the right flank, but the Khalsa

goalkeeper made a superb

stop at full stretch to keep

it out.

Throughout the first half,

both sides had periods of

control and moments of

promise going forward, but

neither was able to find a

breakthrough as the two

defences held firm.

Griffiths opted to make a

double change at the interval,

hoping to inject cutting edge

in front of goal with the

additions of striker Stevens

and midfielder Lily Skeldon.

Goalkeeper Lucy Jones was

called into action early in the

second period, after Khalsa

pounced on a loose pass and

surged forward. Jones made

a crucial reflex stop down at

her near post to deny Khalsa’s

winger from a tight angle.

THE RAM

Two strikes from distance

followed for the Ewes, as

Wilson tried her luck from

range following fantastic

hold-up play from Stevens,

but it drifted wide. A minute

later, Rebecca May dribbled

beyond two defenders

before drilling a low effort

past the post.

Griffiths’ side broke the

deadlock before the hour

mark thanks to a composed

finish from substitute

Stevens, who had made a

positive impact after coming

on. The striker darted in

behind the home backline

and found herself one-on-one

with the goalkeeper, before

slotting the ball coolly into

the bottom corner to give the

Ewes the advantage.

The hosts looked for a rapid

response after the opener,

but Jones was solid once

again in the Derby net to deny

Khalsa an equaliser, parrying

away a close-range strike.

Moments later, former Ewe

Sarah Tweedie went close for

the hosts, as she found space

in the box but sent her header

flying over the crossbar.

Khalsa ramped up the pressure

in search of an equaliser as

the game ticked into the final

10 minutes. A free-kick on the

edge of the box was awarded

to the hosts following an

apparent high boot, but the

Ewes’ wall stood strong to

block before the follow-up was

smashed over the crossbar.

The Ewes’ defence held

firm in the dying embers,

defending resolutely despite

relentless pressure from

the hosts. Mason made a

crucial challenge to halt the

run of Tweedie, who looked

to be charging in behind, and

managed to clear her lines to

help the Ewes see out the win.

DERBY COUNTY U21

Friday 19th September

Premier League 2

The Under-21s came up short

in a 3-1 reverse at Brighton &

Hove Albion in PL2.

Lennon Wheeldon gave Derby

the lead after a fast start

at the AMEX Elite Football

Performance Centre on the

South Coast. The Rams

contained the hosts for

long spells of the first half

with intense pressing, but

Harry Mills’ strike in the 30th

minute levelled the match.

Brighton came out strong

in the second half, and Joe

Belmont’s 67th-minute header

gave them the advantage for

the first time in the contest and

substitute Joshua Robertson

cemented the result with a

goal in the 86th minute.

The result left Derby’s Under-

21s side still searching for

their first Premier League 2

win of the 2025/26 campaign

after four games played.

THE RAM

UNDER-18S

BURNLEY U18 1-2 DERBY

COUNTY U18

Saturday 20th September

Premier League – North

The Under-18s claimed their

first win of the 2025/26

Premier League - North season

with a 2-1 success at Burnley.

A pair of goals from Marley

Mintus fired Bradley

Johnson’s side to victory

over the Clarets, who the

Under-18s defeated by the

same scoreline at Moor Farm

Training Ground in the Premier

League Cup last month.

The success came despite the

Rams playing for more than

34

an hour of the contest with ten

men following striker Charles

Ebuka Agbawodikeizu’s red

card before the half-hour mark.

The Rams took the lead

after nine minutes through

midfielder Mintus as he

opened his goalscoring

account for the season

Agbawodikeizu came near

from the spot but was denied.

Mintus went on to double

Derby’s lead at the halfway

point of the first half to put

the side in a strong position.

However, the Rams were

reduced to ten men a few

minutes later when striker

Ebuka Agbawodikeizu was

sent off.

Derby held on for the rest of

the first half to go in at the

break two goals to the good,

but the home side got a goal

back nine minutes into the

second period through Braidin

Derbyshire’s penalty.

The Rams dug deep in the

final half an hour to see

themselves over the line to

claim the three points.

Team:

O’Neill (GK), K Gordon,

Doyle, Crolla (Friars 67),

Connell-Webster (C), Smith,

Corry, K Gill (Ward 46),

Ebuka Agbawodikeizu,

Mintus, Green (Griffiths 71).

Not Used: Rees (GK), Thomas.

THE RAM

IN THIS SEASON’S VOLUME OF THE RAM, WE ARE TURNING BACK THE

CLOCK THIRTY YEARS TO THE 1995/96 CAMPAIGN WHICH SAW JIM

SMITH’S DERBY SIDE EARN PROMOTION TO THE TOP-FLIGHT. IN EACH

EDITION, WE ARE DIGGING INTO THE DERBY TELEGRAPH ARCHIVES

TO RELIVE THE SEASON MATCH-BY-MATCH THROUGH THE REPORTS

PENNED BY LEGENDARY LOCAL CORRESPONDENT GERALD MORTIMER

IN OUR PROMOTION TRACKER FEATURE.

With the season exactly one

month old, the Rams were

still waiting for a first home

win of the campaign and

languishing in the bottom six

of the First Division table.

A Baseball Ground victory

over Southend United got the

home form monkey of the

players’ backs but Derby still

looked a long way off being

promotion candidates…

MATCH 7

DERBY COUNTY 1

SOUTHEND UNITED 0

Baseball Ground, Wednesday

13th September 1995

There were three notable

things to come out of

the Rams win over the

Shrimpers: a first home

league win of the season;

the continued fine form

of Dean Sturridge; and the

return to action of central

defender Dean Yates.

Actually, there was fourth

point made in Gerald

Mortimer’s match report

in the Evening Telegraph,

though it was a negative

one. The Baseball Ground

attendance for the

36

midweek clash dipped into

four figures – just 9,242

spectators turned out for

the match, the lowest for a

league game in more than

a decade.

Of the more positive aspects

of the encounter, the home

win was certainly a relief for

Jim Smith’s team and while

it was achieved through a

solitary Sturridge goal - his

fifth of the season, the

performance was a step

forward on previous games.

‘The victory was a relief,’

wrote Mortimer, ‘but they

could have sent Southend

United with a real hiding on

second half chances.’

‘Sturridge frightened them

to death with his speed and

aggression. With better

finishing, he might have had

a hat-trick and the same

applies to John Harkes.’

As it was, the goal that won

the game owed much to

an error by Simon Royce in

the Southend goal. From

a free-kick, David Preece

knocked the ball in, and Sean

Flynn helped it on. Royce

hesitated, tried to flick it up

and left Sturridge with an

empty net.

While Derby were very

much on the front foot in

this clash, it was important

that they kept the back

door locked too, and the

return of Yates for his first

League game since 1st

April certainly helped in

that regard.

‘He became steadily

better as the game

developed, a class defender

doing the basics well,’ was

Mortimer’s opinion.

THE RAM

He added: ‘Darren Wassall

had another good game

alongside him and is playing

his best football since his

first half season with Derby.’

Derby County: Hoult,

Kavanagh, Nicholson,

Preece, Yates, Wassall,

van der Laan, Sturridge,

Flynn, Gabbiadini (Wrack,

80), Harkes. Sub not used:

Simpson, Trollope.

MATCH 8

PORTSMOUTH 2

DERBY COUNTY 2

Fratton Park, Saturday

16th September 1995

Having got a first home

win three days earlier, the

Rams came within seconds

of making it back-to-win

victories for the first time

in the season when they

travelled to the south coast

to face Portsmouth.

An injury-time equaliser

courtesy of Alan

McLoughlin’s bullet header

gave the home side a share

of the spoils and left Jim

Smith – a former Pompey

boss of course – seething in

the away dug out.

The Bald Eagle was upset,

not so much by the late goal

conceded but by the wasted

chances throughout the

second half that really ought

to have made a second

Portsmouth strike irrelevant.

Jon Gittens had given

Pompey the lead after a

bright start, but the Rams

were level after 32 minutes

when Robin van der Laan

struck a perfect shot past

Alan Knight for his first goal

for the club.

Derby were out of the traps

fast after the break and

they were tighter and more

effective until it came to

sticking the ball past Knight.

Paul Simpson – who had

replaced an underperforming

John Harkes in the first

half – Marco Gabbiadini and

Dean Sturridge all failed to

convert excellent chances,

but Sean Flynn made no

mistake when he ripped in

a volley under the angle of

post and bar in the 57th

minute. Like van der Laan’s

strike, it was Flynn’s first

Derby goal.

More opportunities were

carved out for Sturridge

and Gabbiadini as the

Rams remained on top but

were made to pay for their

profligacy when McLoughlin

beat Hoult from Paul Hall’s

pin-point cross with virtually

the last play of the game.

Derby County: Hoult,

Kavanagh, Nicholson,

Preece, Yates, Wassall, van

der Laan, Sturridge (Wrack,

89), Flynn, Gabbiadini

(Trollope, 87), Harkes

(Simpson, 33).

DOUBLE

TIMERS

WITH CURRENT SQUAD MEMBER ANDI WEIMANN ON HIS SECOND

STINT WITH THE RAMS – WHILE HEAD COACH JOHN EUSTACE AND

DEFENDER MAT T CLARKE ARE ON THEIR THIRD! – THIS SEASON IN

THE RAM WE’RE REMEMBERING THOSE WHO CAME BACK FOR MORE.

TODAY WE FOCUS ON A MAN WHO SERVED CHARLTON AND DERBY AS

BOTH PLAYER AND MANAGER – CHRIS POWELL…

As popular as Chris Powell is

among Derby supporters for

his 99 playing appearances

for the club, there is no

doubt the talented former

left-back is a legend among

Charlton fans.

He had THREE spells as

a player with the Addicks

and then became the

club’s manager leading

them to promotion to the

Championship in 2012/13.

In total he either played or

managed 431 games for

Charlton Athletic.

The five-times capped

England international started

life on the books of Crystal

Palace but failed to become

a regular in the first team

with the Eagles. It was after

44

THE RAM

a move to Southend United –

then of the old Third Division

- in June 1990 that his career

really took off.

Hardly missing a game, he

helped the Shrimpers to

back-to-back promotions into

the First Division and had

played almost 300 games

for the Essex club when Jim

Smith paid £750,000 to bring

him to Pride Park in January

1996. He had left a lasting

impression at Roots Hall and

was later voted as the club’s

all-time cult hero.

That positive vibe continued

with the Rams, helping the

club earn promotion in his

first season and then named

Player of the Year for the

1996/97 Premier League

campaign, collecting the

Jack Stamps Trophy to

rapturous applause.

Powell played 72 Premier

League games for the Rams

and continued his career in

the top-flight when he made

his first move to Charlton

in the summer of 1998. The

Addicks were relegated

at the end of his first

season but bounced back

immediately and Powell’s

form was so strong for

Charlton that he was called

up into the England squad by

Sven-Göran Eriksson, making

his international debut

against Spain in 2001.

He left for West Ham

United in 2004, but returned

for the 2005/06 season,

and had a third playing

spell at the Valley for the

2007/08 campaign after a

season at Watford.

His playing career ended

with Leicester City, helping

the Foxes to promotion from

League One before retiring.

He was 40 years old when

he played his final game on

THE RAM

27th March 2010, which was

against the Rams.

By that point he was officially

a player-coach under Nigel

Pearson at Leicester and

went on to serve under three

different managers at the

King Power Stadium before

being appointed a boss in his

own right back at Charlton.

He took the reins in January

2011 and within 18 months

had the club promoted into

the Championship as League

One champions, winning the

Manager of the Year award

to boot.

Powell’s side finished

ninth in the second tier the

following year, three points

off the play-offs, and the

club have not finished higher

than that since. Despite that,

he was sacked the following

season with speculation

that he had a difference of

opinion with then club owner

Roland Duchâtelet.

A stint in charge of

Huddersfield Town followed

before he made his return

to Derby in May 2016 when

he was named as assistant

manager to Nigel Pearson.

Within a few months the

former Leicester boss was

was removed from his post

and Powell was named

caretaker manager winning

one and drawing the other of

his two games in charge.

When Pearson was

eventually replaced by Steve

McClaren, Powell reverted to

his previous role but left the

club in March 2017 following

the sacking of McClaren.

He later managed Southend

and was a coach for

Tottenham and England.

He was an assistant coach

at Sheffield Wednesday for

the last two seasons but

left Hillsborough in July

following manager Danny

Röhl’s departure.
