THANK YOU

On behalf of our owner Evangelos Marinakis,

everybody at Nottingham Forest would like to thank

the fans who travelled out to Seville to support the

team against Real Betis last week.

There truly was a sea of red across the city during the

week, which was fantastic to see, and every one of you

represented the club brilliantly. The behaviour of all our

supporters was exemplary, and we’ve also received this

positive feedback from the local authorities, as well as

many Real Betis supporters and staff.

As the team walked out for the historic fixture at the

Estadio de La Cartuja, the players seeing you there in

your thousands and hearing your voices undoubtedly

helped spur them on to a strong performance.

We know that some supporters faced challenging

circumstances when entering the stadium, as well as

following the match. We thank you for your incredible

patience and resilience.

Thank you for your tremendous support. We hope you

enjoy this evening’s fixture, and we look forward to

seeing you on our future European away trips in Graz,

Utrecht and Braga.

ANGE'S

NOTES

Good evening and welcome back to

the City Ground as we continue our

UEFA Europa League campaign with

the visit of FC Midtjylland.

Tonight’s match represents our first

home fixture in European competition

since 1996 – an occasion that has been

eagerly anticipated around both the

club and the city.

We fully understand what this means

to you all and we’re excited to put in

a performance under the City Ground

lights this evening.

Our club has a rich history with

European competition and to lead

our return to continental football is a

personal honour I am extremely proud

of and very much looking forward to.

We have already experienced the

competition this season against Real

Betis last week. It was incredible to see

so many of our supporters in and around

the city and in the stadium. The noise

you generated was extraordinary, and it

truly felt as though our club was back in

its rightful place.

We’re under no illusions that tonight will

be another tough test. Playing against

various opponents from across Europe

is both exciting and demanding in equal

measure, but we have prepared well and

are ready for whatever we will face this

evening.

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to

Mike Tullberg, his players, staff and the

FC Midtjylland supporters who have

made the journey to be with us at the

City Ground this evening.

History will be made as we face a club

from Denmark for the very first time.

European competition often brings

about these unique fixtures and this is

one of those special nights.

On occasions like this, it’s important to

focus on the match itself rather than the

occasion. As long as we perform to the

level I know we can, I am confident we

can produce a positive result.

Enjoy the match.

RYAN

YATE

NOTTINGHAM FOREST AND

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ARE

ENTWINED IN HISTORY.

18

S

19

The Reds have competed at the highest level on the

continent and have two European Cups to show for it.

This season sees Forest return to football on the

continent for the first time since 1995/96.

Ryan Yates has been with Forest since 2005, some

nine years after our previous excursion, and the

atmosphere against FC Midtjylland is something the

skipper is looking forward to.

“The atmosphere at the City Ground is going to be

incredible.

“It’s a bit disappointing that our first game in Europe

wasn’t at home, but it’s going to be so special when it

does come around.”

Taking part is one thing, but Yates is keen to ensure

the Reds leave their mark on the competition.

“You want to do yourself proud. We don’t just want

to take part; we want to progress and hopefully go to

the latter stages of the competition. We’re definitely

not there just to take part.

“You have to embrace it. We’ve worked so, so hard

to get into this position and we’re here for a reason.

We’re one of the stronger teams in the competition;

now we just have to go out there and show it.

“There’s been further investment in the squad and

I think we have a group now that can handle the

amount of games that we have coming.

“We’ll go out there and give it our all and aim to do

ourselves and the fans proud.”

On this day in 2018, Yates was on loan at Scunthorpe

United. He was an unused substitute for the Iron in a

goalless draw against Rotherham United at Glanford

Park.

" YOU HAVE TO EMBRACE IT.

WE’VE WORKED SO, SO HARD

TO GET INTO THIS POSITION AND

WE’RE HERE FOR A REASON.

WE’RE ONE OF THE STRONGER

TEAMS IN THE COMPETITION;

NOW WE JUST HAVE TO GO OUT

THERE AND SHOW IT.

"

Seven years on from that match in Lincolnshire, he

could be on the pitch for the Reds at the City Ground

in the Europa League.

“It just shows you. This is why you have to go and

embrace it and not show any nerves. If anything, it’s

good nerves because we want to do well, not just

because the occasion is so big — that’s for sure.

“We have a fantastic draw against some really good

teams both home and away. It’s so exciting for us and

we just want to do ourselves proud, and we want to

remember our first time back in Europe after so long

as a positive one and one we want to remember.”

On a personal level, Yates has competed below and

across the EFL, risen to the Premier League with

Forest and now into Europe. And he isn’t finished

there.

“It’s another milestone for me but you want to make

it to the very top. This is another part of that journey,

albeit one that is very exciting. You never want to

stop where you’re at, though, and think that it’s

enough in football.”

John McGovern, famous for his part in the Reds’

back-to-back European Cup successes, remains a key

presence around the club on most days, and is often

found at the training ground.

From a former captain to the current, the stories from

McGovern are there to inspire the players ahead of

the European adventure to come.

“John’s around most days so I speak to him and he

has many stories about the European Cups and his

experiences, but it shows you that it’s possible and it’s

also possible to go very far in the competition.”

FOREST

IN EUROPE

1960s FAIRS CUP

Throughout our involvement in

this season’s Europa League we’ll

be looking back at some of our

previous European adventures.

During the League Phase we’ll

concentrate on our participation

in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and its

successor, the UEFA Cup, which

are generally considered to be the

nearest equivalents of the modern

Europa League competition.

To kick things off we’ll recall our

two Fairs Cup campaigns in the

1960s. The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup

was originally conceived as a

tournament for teams from cities

with international trade fairs,

building on the friendly matches

that had already been played

between teams from some of

these cities. I have been unable to

establish whether we were invited

to take part on the strength of

Nottingham’s famous Goose Fair

or some other more international

event.

Unfortunately for us, we were

paired with Valencia, at the time

one of the strongest European

club sides. The first leg was at the

Mestalla Stadium and we were

beaten by two first half goals from

Brazilian Waldo Machado da Silva –

familiarly known simply as Waldo.

It was a brave performance from

Forest as we had been required to

fit in a League Cup game against

Gillingham on the Monday after a

League game against Blackburn.

With temperatures around the

30ºC mark, seven of our eleven

were playing their third competitive

match in five days.

Having been impressed by

the Spaniards’ hospitality, we

apparently sent our first team

coach (the vehicle not the trainer!)

down to London to pick up the

Valencia travelling party. Any hopes

we had of overturning that twogoal

deficit on home soil were soon

dashed, though. Within thirteen

minutes Waldo helped himself to

two more goals to end the tie as a

contest. We had no answer to the

rapid attacks of the skilful Spanish

side and Uruguayan Hector Nunez

went one better than Waldo,

claiming a hat-trick as Valencia

ran out 5-1 winners on the night,

7-1 on aggregate. Our first goal

in European competition was no

more than a consolation at a time

when we were four goals behind

on the night. It was scored by Billy

Cobb, who years later would admit

it was more of a hopeful cross than

a shot.

Unsurprisingly, our first ever

opponents in European

competition made a great

impression both on our fans and on

our Committee. Valencia went on

to win the Fairs Cup and retained

it the following season so when it

came to finding a team to play as

part of our centenary celebrations

in 1965 they were an obvious and

popular choice. On that occasion

we managed to hold them to a 1-1

draw.

From 1964 onwards, qualification

for the Fairs Cup was based on

teams’ league positions and the

next time we qualified was after we

came second in 1966/67. We were

drawn against Eintracht Frankfurt,

who had finished fourth in the

West German Bundesliga. A single

goal from Joe Baker was enough

to win the first leg in Germany.

The game was played in torrential

rain and the crowd in what was an

open stadium was a meagre 4,500.

Even that number was boosted

by several hundred travelling

Reds fans and plenty of British

servicemen based in Germany. Our

victory was marred by the harsh

sending off of Frank Wignall, our

first dismissal in a competitive

game since the 1930s.

The modest attendance for the

second leg reflected fans’ feelings

about an increase in the usual

ticket price, but the 27,000 who

turned up saw Forest ease to a

5-0 aggregate win. Goals from

26

Baker (2), Sammy Chapman and

Barry Lyons could easily have been

added to as we hit the woodwork

twice while Baker and Ian Storey-

Moore both had goals disallowed.

Our next opponents were FC

Zürich, who came to the City

Ground with little ambition to

do any more than defend for 90

minutes. However, after Henry

Newton had given us the lead a

stroke of good fortune gave the

Swiss side an unlikely equaliser.

An attempted pass by Newton

struck the referee and rebounded

to put Fritz Künli through to beat

Peter Grummitt. A penalty from

Storey-Moore restored our lead

and he also had a goal ruled out

but our dominance should have

been rewarded with far more

‘away goals’

we headed to Switzerland for the

second leg.

If bad luck had restricted our lead

in the home game, extraordinarily

bad planning was our downfall

in the return. After a Christian

Winiger goal levelled the tie with

twenty minutes remaining we were

content to see out the 90 minutes

and then push for the winning goal

in extra time. When the referee

blew for full time our players

remained on the pitch expecting

to play for a further 30 minutes. To

their surprise and embarrassment,

the Swiss players and officials were

already celebrating their victory

on the ‘away goals’ rule, which

applied after 90 minutes and not,

as we had lazily assumed, after

extra time.

Curiously, an article on the Fairs

Cup in our programme for the

home leg had stated that extra

time would be played if the

aggregate scores were level after

90 minutes. It seems inconceivable

that a professional club’s

administration could be unaware

of a competition’s rules, but we

were out of Europe and it would

be eleven years before we again

took on continental opposition in

competitive action.

FOREST

IN EUROPE

GETTING SHIRTY

As we look back at Forest’s history

in European competition we’ll also

be recalling some of the shirts we

wore in those fondly-remembered

campaigns. At the time of our

European debut against Valencia

in 1961 we were still wearing the

V-necked red shirts with white

collars and cuffs that we had worn

when we won the FA Cup in 1959.

This is still a popular shirt – as

witness the modern replicas that

have been available in recent

years – but in many fans’ eyes

the archetypal Forest shirt of the

decade is the one we wore in our

second Fairs Cup campaign in 1967.

This shirt had a round neck and

sported distinctive red and white

striped collars and cuffs. It came

in long- and short-sleeved versions

and, pleasingly, the same style with

the striped trims was used in our

change kits. In those days teams

would only change their colours

if there was a clash. We would

usually switch to a white shirt but

there was also a blue version that

got the occasional outing.

In the days before clubs got

in on the act with replicas of

popular shirts from the past, a

manufacturer of retro shirts used

to advertise in football magazines

with thumbnail illustrations of their

range of shirts accompanied by

the words “as worn by…” and the

names of two or three star players

from each team. As I recall, the

Forest shirt invoked the names of

captain Terry Hennessey and fans’

favourite Ian Storey-Moore and

was offered in both home and away

versions. Even with the plethora of

shirts available to fans these days,

replicas of these late 60s shirts can

still be seen at our matches.

McG

PAUL

REGOR

NOTTINGHAM FOREST’S LAST WINNING GOAL IN

EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CAME FROM THE BOOT OF

PAUL MCGREGOR IN 1995, IN FRONT OF OVER

22,000 AT THE CITY GROUND.

37

The Nottingham-born attacker followed in after

Stuart Pearce saw a penalty saved to rifle the

ball into the net, living his dream moment for his

hometown club.

But the standout thought for the former Red is what

is meant to the fans, and the impact his goal had on

those in the stands that famous night.

“My big take away from those moments is what it

meant for the fans rather than what it meant to me as

a player or us as a group.

“I have my individual memories which are there to

be cherished and when I look back I have a feeling of

how proud I am of us as a club, as a city and England

really given we were the last team in Europe.

“I’d grown up in Nottingham so so many of my friends

talk to me about that European run and the stories

you hear from it; marriages were formed, people met

their life long partners, people have lost friends in

which they had their best memory with during that

time. These moments cling to you.

“Hopefully the boys can stay in there as long as

possible and give these memories to the fans once

more because it’s such an honour to be a part of

something so amazing and so important that means

to much to the fans.

“Nottingham as a city almost feels like a village at

times in that everybody knows everyone. The City

Ground feels local and feels deeply connected to the

city.

“The kids now look at this team and look at these

moments and it’s only a step away.

“If you look at my journey, I played in Nottingham, I

was signed by Brian Clough, but to play in Europe,

against teams like Bayern Munich, it was a dream.

“When you can see that on your doorstep it’s so

inspirational and it gives real value to kids that want

to be a footballer and kids that want to achieve other

things in life".

The goal itself was a special moment for McGregor

with the forward itching to get on the field of play

throughout the match and even more so to leave his

mark on Forest in Europe when he did.

Not only did he appear for Forest in the UEFA Cup,

but he scored the winner with maybe a little bit

of forward’s instincts playing a part in the crucial

moment.

“At that time I was desperate to get on a football

pitch. I’d look at our centre forwards; Kevin Campbell,

Bryan Roy and Jason Lee and as a 19-year-old I’d think

I’m better than all of them! All I was thinking was get

me on the pitch.

“I was desperate to get on the pitch at any moment

during that campaign both in the Premier League and

in Europe.

“The match against Lyon was no different, I was

sitting on the bench thinking I would have the players

at the back. Then I think the game stagnated a bit and

they had the measure of Kev and our other forwards.

“I don’t think they were much of a threat but it was

different to the previous games and the manager

thought we could go and win this. He put me and

Bobby Howe on and I remember the first thing I did

was run in behind the defenders.

“They were both mid to late 30s and I think it

changed the dynamic of the game because they

became worried about the two horrors that were now

up front.

“I got back to the halfway line after that and looked

into the eyes of the defenders and I could see the

fear.

“We put them under so much pressure, the

City Ground lifted and when Bobby’s effort was

goalbound, the defender had to put his hand out

which gave us the penalty.

“I saw (Stuart Pearce) Pearcy stepping up and thought

that we’d done it. But there was something in me that

thought ‘what if he misses?’.

“If he did, I thought there’s no one that will get to the

ball quicker than me and I curved my run to get in

there.

“The ‘keeper parried straight towards me and I

remember the ball falling at a nice height and seeing

the top left of the goal gaping so I got a good foot on

it and hit the back of the net.

“I’ll never be able to describe that feeling. It was so

bizarre to literally be in the middle of your dream and

then looking up and your mates are with you.”

HAMMOND DISCUSSES FOREST

B TEAM’S PRODUCTIVE START

TO THE SEASON

Ben Hammond says Nottingham Forest’s B

Team have enjoyed a productive start to their

campaign and there has been a lot of growth

within the group since pre-season.

As has been the case in previous seasons, our

B Team are competing across a number of

competitions alongside the regular Premier League

2 campaign, namely the National League Cup,

Vertu Trophy as well as the defence of the Premier

League International Cup.

Warren Joyce’s side have got off to a positive start,

enjoying experience against senior opposition in

the National League Cup and Vertu Trophy, even

claiming a point against League Two side Tranmere

Rovers, gaining valuable experience as the players

continue their progression.

Hammond says the progress and adaptability of

the squad has been good to see.

“It’s been a good start, we’ve not quite had the

results we would have liked but the performances

have been there and we have grown a lot from the

start of pre-season with a new group. It’s been a

good start for us so far.

“It’s been busy with so many different games

happening throughout each individual week but

we’ve adapted to each one, take the games as they

come and move on to the next one.

“Every day we work together I feel like we’re

becoming closer, we have a good laugh together

on and off the pitch and we have some really good

training sessions together which are always fun.

43

I think that has shown in the

games when we’re playing

together and linking up well.”

Forest went into this season’s

Premier League International

Cup as defending champions

having won the tournament last

season against Lyon at the City

Ground.

With the young Reds defending

the tournament this season,

alongside competing against

senior opposition in other

competitions, the experience of

facing different types of teams

is one Hammond relishes.

“We’ve played in different

competitions for a number of

seasons now and I think it gets

better through every season.

Each season, particularly in

the International Cup, brings a

44

WE’VE PLAYED IN DIFFERENT COMPETITIONS

FOR A NUMBER OF SEASONS NOW AND I THINK

IT GETS BETTER THROUGH EVERY SEASON.

"

"

different calibre of teams for us to

play against. It’s a great experience

for us to face these teams with

each of them bringing up different

challenges compared to PL2.

“The International Cup is a

really good competition and it’s

something we want to win again as

a team for sure. It’s different from

domestic matches with it being

a European competition but it’s

good fun and a good challenge;

hopefully we can go far again.

“The games are a lot more tactical,

whereas PL2 has a more physical

aspect to it. We have to adapt to

the International Cup matches

given the different teams we will

be facing.

“The teams arrive with a

completely different style of play

compared to what we’re used to in

England, but we pick up the little

things that they do and we use it to

exploit any weaknesses and win as

many games as we can.

Playing against senior teams is a

great opportunity to showcase

what you can do. Most of the

teams we have against so far have

taken the competition seriously as

well which provides the best test

for the team."

Hammond's role in the team has

changed this season. The midfielder

says he wants to continue

progressing in the new position

and there isn’t a better place for his

development than Forest.

“I’ve played a different position

compared to what I’m used to

as more of a six than a central

defender. I think I’ve done well

in there – it’s different but I just

want to progress in that position

and take that next step into senior

football.

“It’s something I wasn’t used to at

the start but as the games have

gone on I’m definitely feeling more

comfortable.

“I spoke to the gaffer about my

characteristics as a player and

how I can be utilised best for both

me and the team. At the minute

playing further upfield suits my

game better to make the jump up

to senior football.

“We all enjoy it every day, the

facilities are brilliant and since I’ve

started as a young lad they have

improved so much. We all come

in every day eager to improve and

keep learning, it’s a really good

place to be.”

FOREST

WOMEN

LAST TIME OUT AT THE CITY GROUND

Forest welcomed Crystal Palace to

the City Ground in their third match

of the 2025/26 campaign.

It was the visitors that had the first

sight of goal as Elise Hughes released

Ashleigh Weerden into space, but

the forward was denied by a smart

challenge from Forest’s Deanne Rose

to halt the Palace attack.

The Reds worked their first

opportunity soon after as Rose broke

into space and drove into the Palace

box, eventually finding Charlie

Wellings in the area who shot at goal;

her effort was saved comfortably.

Palace opened the scoring in the 18th

minute when Molly Sharpe’s ball across

the area was deflected towards the

back post and Justine Vanhaevermaet

found the back of the net with a lobbed

effort over Emily Batty.

Forest looked for an immediate

response as Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah

freed Wellings down the left channel,

the forward burst into the 18-yard box,

but was denied at the near post.

The visitors doubled their advantage

just after the half hour mark as Hughes’

pass found Weerden on the edge of

the area; Weerden’s deflected strike

found it’s way to Kirsty Howat to tap

home at the far post.

Neither side created an opportunity of note

prior to the half time whistle as Forest entered

the interval two goals down.

Palace almost netted their third of the

afternoon when Annabel Blanchard

led the visitors’ counter-attack, finding

Hughes with space around her; the

forward was only denied by the

woodwork to keep the score at 0-2.

Forest should have closed the deficit

when Shae Yañez’s loose pass fell

to Boye-Hlorkah in the area, but her

attempt was straight at the keeper.

The hosts continued to dominate

possession in their search for their

opening goal, again coming close as

Boye-Hlorkah's ball across the box

somehow didn’t find the feet of Rose

in the area.

Forest continued their pursuit of a goal

as Rose dragged her shot wide of the

far post with the match approaching

the final ten minutes at the City

Ground.

Forest were finally rewarded for

their positive performance when

Boye-Hlorkah’s deflected effort from

distance found the bottom corner.

With the tie into the final minutes of

additional time, Ebba Hed whipped

a dangerous ball into the area as the

loose ball fell the way of Rose but from

a tight angle the forward couldn’t get

a true connection as the Reds fell to a

narrow defeat on home soil.

FULL TIME: Nottingham Forest 1-2

HELPING YOUNG

PEOPLE THRIVE

WITH RALEIGH

EDUCATION

TRUST

Since January, Nottingham

Forest Community Trust has

partnered with Raleigh Education

Trust to deliver sport, education,

and personal development

programmes across several

Nottinghamshire academies.

Through initiatives like Premier

League Primary Stars and

Premier League Inspires, pupils

have benefited from PE lessons,

workshops, and one-to-one

mentoring that build confidence,

skills, and engagement both in and

out of the classroom.

A key strand of the work has been

supporting school attendance, with

pupils rewarded through incentives

such as tours of the City Ground

and Nottingham Forest Museum.

This approach has already shown

results, including a 1.9% reduction

in absence at Woodlands Academy,

with 232 pupils engaged overall.

The partnership also creates

inspirational, life-changing

experiences. Adam, a pupil, was

invited by striker Chris Wood to

a Nottingham Forest matchday,

where he met the players and

joined them on the pitch. “This was

incredible. I’ve never experienced

anything like it,” he said. “Being

on the pitch, meeting the players,

and seeing how the team prepares

has inspired me to try even harder

in school and in sport.” His story

reflects how these programmes

motivate young people to raise

aspirations and aim higher.

Looking ahead, Nottingham Forest

Community Trust will continue to

expand its reach, helping pupils

thrive by inspiring confidence,

improving attendance, developing

positive attitudes to learning,

and creating unforgettable

opportunities that build skills for

life.

NIGHT

AT THE

USEUM

NOTTINGHAM FOREST’S LAST EUROPEAN FIXTURE AT THE

CITY GROUND CAME IN 1996 WHEN BAYERN MUNICH WERE

THE VISITORS IN THE UEFA CUP.

While the result itself wasn’t particularly memorable,

as the Reds exited the competition that evening, for

many years it marked our final foray into European

football. Indeed, that season we were the last British

side competing on the continent at that stage, having

seen off the French clubs Lyon and Auxerre in the

earlier rounds of the then-knockout tournament.

Among the special European section of the Forest

Museum is a collection of items from that historic

match, each holding memories and stories from the

evening the German giants visited the world-famous

City Ground.

The commentator that night was none other than

the voice of football, John Motson. In one corner

of this section of the Museum are his original

commentator’s notes from the match itself. With

handwritten details next to each player in both the

starting XI and among the substitutes, the level

of preparation is remarkable — even extending to

information about the match officials.

Alongside the notes is the Bayern Lion, a ceramic

statue presented to the club by the German side

ahead of one of the fixtures in 1996. One of two

gifted to Forest, the lion features details of the

match, with the names of both teams inscribed in

red on the base, and the date it was presented — 5

March 1996 in Munich.

The second item, a special dish, proudly displays

the Bayern Munich crest at its centre, surrounded by

intricate insignias celebrating the occasion.

Completing this corner of the Museum is the

ceremonial pendant exchanged between the two

captains before kick-off. The pendant features

Bayern’s achievements across a multitude of

competitions — a list which has only grown since

that mid-1990s meeting.

This corner represents just a small part of the Forest

Museum. Filled with treasures from our past —

memorabilia, historic kits, and artefacts spanning

decades — the Forest Museum and Stadium Tour

experience offers an unmissable journey through the

club’s rich history.

Both standard and Legends Tours are available,

giving you the chance to explore the world-famous

City Ground alongside a hero from our past. Book

your place on our gold-standard accredited tour

THE OVERVIEW

A relatively young club by modern

standards, FC Midtjylland were founded

in 1999 following the merger of Ikast

FS and Herning Fremad, creating a

footballing powerhouse in the region and

in Danish football.

After a single season in the Danish First Division, Midtjylland were

promoted to the Danish Superliga and established the country’s first

academy in 2004.

Their first league title came in 2015, since added to three times, along with

Danish Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023, and a first-ever qualification for the

UEFA Champions League in 2020.

The Danish side have been an almost ever-present force in European

competition since 2001/02, competing in various tournaments on 20

occasions since their debut.

They have faced English opposition before — taking on the likes of

Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool — but have never

travelled to the City Ground or faced the Reds in either a friendly or

competitive fixture.

Famously, Midtjylland have overcome both United and City in their history,

recording wins in the UEFA Cup and the Europa League in 2008/09 and

2015/16 respectively.

History will be made this evening when the Danish side become the first

club from the country to face Forest as European football returns to the

City Ground.

60

MIKE

TULLBERG

Mike Tullberg is embarking on his first

campaign in charge of FC Midtjylland,

having taken over at the MCH Arena earlier

this year.

His playing career was spent predominantly in his native Denmark, though

he also enjoyed a spell with Italian side Reggina and a loan move north of the

border with Hearts during the 2008/09 season.

Tullberg began his coaching career in Germany in 2014 with Rot-Weiß

Oberhausen before embarking on a six-year spell across various teams at

Borussia Dortmund from 2019 onwards.

After a single season with Dortmund II, he moved to the club’s Under-19 side

in 2020, overseeing five years in charge before temporarily stepping into the

senior caretaker role earlier this year.

He guided Dortmund through three matches at first-team level, remaining

unbeaten — drawing and winning once in the Bundesliga while also recording

a 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Following his brief return to Dortmund II for the remainder of the season,

Tullberg departed to become Midtjylland’s head coach in the summer.

THE COACH

The Danish side currently sit second in the Danish Superliga, just two points

behind AGF after nine games, and have suffered only a single defeat in the

league so far this season.

ELÍAS

RAFN ÓLAFSSON

GOALKEEPER

AGE: 25

SIGNED FROM: BREIÐABLIK

Elías Rafn Ólafsson has claimed the No.1 jersey for Midtjylland in 2025/26

after spending several years gaining experience away from the club.

Since joining permanently in 2018, the Icelandic stopper enjoyed loan

spells with Aarhus Fremad, Fredericia and Portuguese side Mafra, before

stepping up to become the first-choice goalkeeper at the MCH Arena

this season.

THE

DANGERMEN

DEFENDER

AGE: 26

SIGNED FROM: BRENTFORD

Another familiar name to English football is defender Mads Bech

Sørensen. The former Denmark Under-21 international spent six years

with Brentford between 2017 and 2023, during which he had three loan

spells away from the Bees. After an initial stint with AFC Wimbledon,

Sørensen enjoyed further loans with Nice and Groningen before making

a permanent move to Midtjylland in 2023.

PHILIP

BILLING

MIDFIELDER

AGE: 29

SIGNED FROM: AFC BOURNEMOUTH

MADS

BECH SØRENSEN

No stranger to English football, Philip Billing returned to his native

Denmark in 2025 following 12 years in England and Italy. The 29-year-old

joined Huddersfield Town’s academy in 2013, progressing to the first team

a year later, before moving to the south coast in 2019. During six seasons

with the Cherries, Billing made over 200 appearances before joining

Midtjylland in the summer transfer window.

FORWARD

AGE: 21

SIGNED FROM: BENFICA

Franculino Djú has been Midtjylland’s go-to man for goals this season,

netting nine times in 17 appearances across all competitions in 2025/26.

The Guinea-Bissau international has been particularly prolific in the

Danish Superliga, scoring eight goals in nine games and adding a

further three assists, taking his total goal involvements to 12 in just 17

appearances.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know these unusual and

unique facts about our visitors

from Denmark?

THE GOLDMINE

In 2019, FC Midtjylland opened Guldminen, a free school for

children aged 5-12, located at the club's training ground. The

school's primary goal is to develop "super athletes" and potentially

"the best football player in the world", integrating intensive football

training with regular education.

DANISH WOLVES

The club's crest features a red wolf, inspired by folklore suggesting

wolves once lived on the moors where the cities of Herning and

Ikast (the club's home cities) are now located. In 2015, wild wolves

unexpectedly returned to Denmark…

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

Players have participated in unconventional team-building

exercises, including survival training in the wilderness, where they

had to hunt for food. These experiences are designed to foster

respect among players and coaches and build mental toughness.

HEAR THE GAME

To enhance accessibility, Midtjylland established the "Hear the

Game" project, providing audio descriptions of matches for

partially sighted or blind fans. The club has also taken steps to

make the stadium more accessible for wheelchair users.

CAR PARK FOOTBALL

During the COVID-19 pandemic, FC Midtjylland innovatively

offered fans a "drive-in" match experience, allowing them to

watch games from their cars in the stadium parking area.
