New on the shelves ... books to enjoy with a glass of wine on the side!

Dinner plans were cancelled (and it was promising to be a great dinner). Steve

Cavanagh’s Two Kinds of Stranger is an edge-of-your-seat read, and there was

no chance of putting it down for a dinner date. The story of a woman who has

it all ... dreamy husband, perfect apartment, the ultimate job. She’s an internet

celeb, known for her random acts of kindness. #RAK. But when she’s betrayed, live

on social media, millions of people are watching. She’s already lost everything

... then an apparently chance encounter with a stranger and one of her #RAK

plunges her into a nightmare. Featuring Cavanagh’s Eddie Flynn, it’s a nail-biting

thriller. Headline • In Last Chance, Stephen Leather has Spider Shepherd infiltrate

a group of professional killers, known as The Office, who’re carrying out hits for

the Iranian government across the European continent. The targets are wealthy

and privileged, and after a slew of murders in London, MI5 has had enough. The

Office must be destroyed. And obvs Spider - the secret services’ most dangerous

weapon - is the man to do it. Hodder & Stoughton

Syrah is one of the most compatible wines to enjoy with food and one of the

most generous wines to enjoy with friends. Launching this month, the 2022 La

Motte Syrah was matured in 300-litre French oak barrels for 15 months ... the

violet red-hued wine has aromas of ripe mulberries, black olive and a subtle hint

of aniseed, while the palate has a fresh and juicy profile with a smooth, mellow

texture, brimming with vibrant cherry fruit. The medium-bodied wine character is

wonderful with rich, flavourful dishes, grilled foods (including grilled vegetables),

game dishes (particularly those incorporating stewed fruit and sweet aromatic

spice components), peppercorn-crusted steaks and barbecued meat in a sticky,

sweet marinade. The wine’s abundant fruit also latches on to the sweetness in

jelly, chutneys and berry sauces. Details: la-motte.com

Ansje Craven

Born and raised in Mbombela, Ansje Craven left her picturesque Lowveld

home town to study consumer science at North-West University.

Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY

ut after two years, Ansje

decided it was time to follow

her true passion. She moved

to Pretoria to complete a

Bachelor’s degree in Interior

Design, a path that allowed her

to do what she loves, blend technical

problem-solving with creativity. “I get

bored doing the same thing over and

over,” she says. “Design keeps both

sides of my brain busy, and that’s the

joy I’ve always sought.”

Childhood memories for Ansje are

rich and textured, shaped by family

and tradition. Each December, her

extended family gathered at her

grandparents’ holiday home in

Uvongo. Together they staged a

Christmas play every year, a ritual

of laughter, rehearsals, and shared

excitement that would leave its

mark long into adulthood. “Those

holidays,” she recalls, “taught me about

collaboration, creativity, and the joy of

simple family rituals and togetherness.”

Although she always leaned toward

the technical, Ansje was no stranger

to the arts. She danced, performed

in school plays, and thrived on stage.

“Dance was my first love,” she says. “The

freedom of movement, the expression,

it’s exhilarating. To me, design feels

similar; it’s just another way to tell a

story.”

Family, for Ansje, has been both a

source of joy and profound heartache.

She married her high school love,

André, in 2012, and together they

had two children: Liam, who looked

just like his mum, and Zoe, who took

after her dad. But life’s harshest lessons

arrived unexpectedly. “Liam was a

gentle, radiant presence,” Ansje smiles

sadly, “he laughed from deep in his

tummy and brought joy wherever he

went. His first grand mal seizure at 15

months was terrifying, and over the

next two years, his condition worsened

despite medications and treatments.

A ketogenic diet brought some relief,

reducing his seizures from fifty a day to

five. Yet the toll was already immense:

Liam lost many abilities, including

speaking, crawling, and laughing. He

spent weeks in hospital, including a

Ansje loves colour in every form

four-week induced coma, and though

doctors fought to save him, the

underlying cause remained a mystery.”

One night, while admitted in

Cape Town, Liam went into severe

Ansje and her husband Marco

respiratory distress. Ansje held him,

whispering that it was okay to let

go. He passed away peacefully in his

mother’s arms, a few weeks shy of his

fourth birthday. “Watching him go

was the hardest moment of my life,”

she says. Three years later, André died.

“Even though we were divorced, losing

both André and Liam in such a short

time made it feel as though my entire

family had been ripped away from me,”

Ansje reflects.

The grief reshaped her perspective

entirely. “I realised how incredibly

precious life is,” she explains.

“Everything we go through, whether

good or painful, can shape us if we

allow it. As hard as it was, I had to be

strong for Zoe. Living in the shadow

of my pain would not have been fair

to her. Instead, I chose to embrace life,

to let beauty grow from ashes.” Ansje

honours Liam and André in her daily

life through photos, shared stories, and

birthday rituals. Zoe, even as a young

child, participates in celebrating Liam’s

birthday, a small but meaningful act

that keeps his memory alive.

Then, as if life were testing her

resilience again, Ansje received

October 2025 Get It Lowveld 13

another devastating diagnosis: breast

cancer. Just a year after André’s passing

and four years after losing Liam, she

discovered Stage 3 Infiltrating Ductal

Carcinoma, HER2 Positive, in her right

breast. “It felt surreal, like being trapped

in a nightmare I couldn’t wake up

from,” she recalls. She underwent eight

rounds of chemotherapy, a unilateral

Marco, Zoe and Ansje

14 Get It Lowveld October 2025

mastectomy, radiation, Herceptin

therapy, and hormonal treatment.

The physical side effects were brutal,

from sickness and hair loss to dramatic

changes in her body. “I felt incomplete,

like half a woman,” she admits. Yet

even in this darkest chapter, she

found support in her partner Marco,

who became her husband in 2024.

“He loved me as I was,” she says. “My

short fuzzy hair, scars, and all. His love

showed me that true beauty goes far

beyond appearances.”

Today, Ansje has been in remission

for over two years. The journey

changed her profoundly. She learned

to embrace life’s changes rather than

resist them, to measure her growth

against her own past rather than

others’ standards, and to cherish

the moments that truly matter. “The

immense influence of my parents, my

faith in God, and Marco’s unyielding

positivity carried me through,” she says.

“Together, they taught me that even in

storms, joy and strength can exist.”

Life is now about balance and building

a future that honours the past

without being consumed by it. Ansje

opened a new interior design studio

in September, aiming to establish her

brand not just locally in the Lowveld,

but across South Africa. “Even though

follow-ups and scans are part of life,”

she says, “they don’t stop me from

planning, building, and pushing

forward. Life doesn’t wait, and neither

do I.”

When she takes a day off, it’s often not

about doing nothing. “I’m a busybody,

I can’t sit still,” she laughs. Relaxation

can mean a nap (Ansje loves to nap),

but more often its family time, laughter

and connection. Favourite escapes

include Klaserie Dam, where lions roar

and the moon rises over still water; and

quiet moments at home with Zoe and

their two Border Collies. These spaces

are where joy, peace, and reflection

intersect.

Looking back, Ansje sees growth

forged through adversity. She’s

stronger, more resilient, and deeply

attuned to what matters: family, faith,

and living with purpose. “I want Zoe

to know that no matter what, she can

rise above her circumstances,” she says.

“There is always a rainbow after the

storm, but first, you have to weather it.”

With a confidence that she laughingly

says borders on arrogance, this petite,

blue-eyed go-getter isn’t slowing

down anytime soon. Her journey is

a testament to the human spirit: to

endure loss, illness and heartache, yet

continue to laugh, create, love and

inspire. It is a reminder that while life

can break us, it can also rebuild us,

stronger, wiser, and more fully alive.

Echoes of sound in

Instrumentalist

Omphile Diale comes

from a family where

music flows like a

second language.

The supremely talented young

woman smiles as she explains that

everyone in her family sings, not

with polished technique, but with

feeling and emotion. “Although I’m

the only instrumentalist, music echoes

throughout our house,” she says. “Even

with my instruments, I play from the

heart. It’s how it has always been.”

The first song Omphile ever played

on the piano was “How Far I’ll Go” from

Moana, and her very first performance

was at the Nelspruit Eisteddfod, in the

beginner piano category. “I remember

it like it was yesterday,” she says. “That

day, the seed of my love for the piano

was planted.”

But the memory isn’t just about

triumph. “I stuck out like a sore thumb,”

she laughs. “I wore my school’s sports

uniform while the other kids arrived

in pretty dresses and heels. They had

their sheet music neatly pasted on

black cardboard. I couldn’t even read

music. My hands shook terribly, a

sign of nerves because I didn’t fit in.

I had never touched a grand piano

before, and for the first time I had the

opportunity to touch people with my

music. As soon as I laid my hands on

those keys, I was home.”

As the adjudicator handed out

certificates, Omphile’s name was

missing. “Everyone had been called,

except me,” she recalls. “I thought

they’d forgotten! But when my name

was finally called, my mum had tears

running down her cheeks. She told

me how much my performance

had moved her, and that she saw

something so special in me.”

From that day, I began to see it too.”

Balancing school, sport, and music

blue and gold

has never been easy, but Omphile

says that there is no alternative for her.

“Some days my mind is tired, other

days my emotions feel too heavy,” she

says, “but I couldn’t give up music even

if I wanted to. I simply wouldn’t know

how to live without it.”

Her instruments of choice are the

piano and the harp, both classic and

beautifully haunting in their own right.

“The piano’s keys are weighty, they

resist slightly, as if asking if I really mean

what I’m about to say,” she explains.

“The harp, though, is delicate and

immediate. Resting on my shoulder, it

vibrates through my whole body. They

tell the same story, but in different

voices. That’s what makes music so

beautiful.”

Omphile’s music leans toward the

fragile and melancholic. “If my music

had a colour palette, it would be deep,

dark blues, for pain, woven through

with gold, for healing. For me, music

is more than mere performance; it’s

a connection across time. When we

compose or perform, we put into

music what we can’t put into words.

And keeping classical music alive

means keeping the emotions of past

generations alive, too. It means that

Omphile with her mentor, Theresa

Prinsloo

Omphile and her mother,

Nok’thula Sithole-Diale

the heart of someone who lived

decades ago will never be forgotten,

because somewhere, their melody

still plays.”

Omphile’s inspiration comes from two

sources: raw, unspoken emotion and

her mentor, Theresa Prinsloo.

“She taught me how to make music

a release, not just of beauty, but of

truth. She has poured time, effort,

and heart into my journey, and her

patience, guidance, and belief in me

have shaped not just my music, but

the person I’m becoming. I’m forever

grateful to her for everything,” says

Omphile.

Books also play an important role in

the talented young woman’s life, as

she loves to read whenever she finds

the time. “Reading gives me peace,

the kind that comes when you forget

where you are for a while. Sometimes

I even imagine soundtracks for the

chapters,” she smiles.

If she could play a duet with anyone?

“Beethoven. Typical, I know,” she laughs,

“but when I performed “Moonlight

Sonata” No. 14 in C-sharp minor with

Ms Prinsloo, I was moved to the edge

of tears. That piece says so much, and

I feel like I’ve only ever heard a fraction

of it. To play it with Beethoven himself

would be more than a duet; it would

be a timeless conversation.”

Swing City in action

The Lowveld came alive under

a canopy of twinkling lights as

Sonpark Boulevard transformed

into a glittering stage for one of

Mbombela’s most-anticipated

annual charity events, Night of

1000 Stars.

With this year’s theme, Viva Las Vegas!,

the evening dazzled in true showtime

fashion, celebrating food, music,

community and generosity, all in aid

of CANSA.

Right from the start, it was clear this

would be a night to remember. The

boulevard shimmered with tables

dressed to perfection, each restaurant

proudly presenting its own flair and

flavour. Guests were welcomed into a

street transformed into a glamorous

open-air dining hall, where fairy lights

set the stage for a feast of sight, sound

and taste.

At the heart of Night of 1000 Stars is

the food, a celebration of the Lowveld’s

culinary talent. Several of the city’s

best restaurants prepared exquisite

three-course meals, each one crafted to

impress both palate and presentation.

Starters dazzled with creative flair, mains

were hearty and bold, and desserts were

edible works of art.

But this wasn’t just about taste. Each

dish was carefully judged, and awards

were handed out for the best starter,

main and dessert, making the evening

a thrilling culinary competition. Guests

were treated not only to a spectacular

meal but also to the excitement of seeing

which chefs would rise to the occasion.

Adding to the spectacle, the tables

themselves became canvases of

creativity. Restaurants competed for

the best table decor, transforming the

street into an extravaganza of themed

designs that ranged from whimsical to

elegant, all with a nod to the theme. And,

of course, no Las Vegas-inspired evening

would be complete without glamour:

prizes were awarded to the best-dressed

man, woman, and couple, who stepped

out in sequins, sparkles, feathers and flair.

Cicada’s winning

If the food delighted the senses, the

music was the soul of the evening. The

incomparable Swing City brought the

boulevard to life, weaving a set that

channelled the timeless energy of the

30’s and 40’s jazz, swing and blues era.

Bopping to “I Wan’na Be Like You (The

Monkey Song)” from The Jungle Book with

a swing twist was a definite highlight of

the evening!

The performance had guests tapping,

clapping, and foot-stomping from the

very first note. Adding to the magic was

the electrifying talent of our own Stix

Dumisa on the trumpet, whose soaring

notes filled the night air and set hearts

racing. Together, the music created

an atmosphere of joy, nostalgia and

celebration, perfectly in tune with the

Lowveld’s vibrant spirit.

As dazzling as the food and

entertainment were, the heart of Night

of 1000 Stars lies in its purpose: to raise

funds for CANSA. Through ticket sales,

a spirited auction, and countless acts of

behind-the-scenes generosity, the event

raised over R170 000 for this vital cause.

The auction, expertly run by Dewald

Jacobs, was a highlight in itself, a mix

of laughter, competition, and heartfelt

giving. From luxury items to

experiences money can’t normally

buy, every bid carried the same

intention: to support CANSA’s

mission in the community.

What makes Night of 1000

Stars so special is not only

the spectacle but also

the people who make it

possible. The Mbombela

community opened their

hearts, from the chefs and

restaurateurs who poured

passion onto every plate, to the

teams who worked late into the

night packing up tables, ensuring the

streets were spotless, and perfecting

every detail of the event.

It is no exaggeration to say that it

takes a village. From Koos and Elmarie

Schoonraad’s bar service to André

Bladwell’s table entertainment, from

Riaan Loubser’s food judging to

Guillaume en Sonja Nel

Best-dressed man Daryl Hitchinson with Sandra Jacobs

Louise and Neels Jackson’s beautiful

photography, countless hands

shaped the evening into something

extraordinary. Special thanks go to

Rinella Jansen van Vuuren and the

CANSA Committee, whose tireless

Sound Productions; the sponsors,

SPAR Lowveld, Nelspruit Ford, Doug’s

Hiring, and Laevelder/Lowvelder; and

the Sonpark management and staff,

who worked until midnight to clear the

boulevard, ready for the city by morning.

As the last song played and the fairy

lights dimmed, guests left not only with

memories of an unforgettable night but

also with the knowledge that they had

been part of something bigger. Night

of 1000 Stars is more than an evening

of glamour, music, and fine dining; it

is a testament to the generosity of the

Lowveld, a community that knows how

to celebrate while giving back.

a new CHAPTER

a new

Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY

For many South Africans, the Lowveld’s warm

climate, abundant natural beauty, and slower

pace are the perfect backdrop to a new, more

relaxed way of life - not an ending, but a

reshaping of life’s rhythms.

It’s not only about stepping away from work; it’s about reimagining how you

want to live each day. For those already rooted here, the focus isn’t whether this

is the right place (we know it is), but rather how best to shape this new chapter

in the most meaningful, manageable, and enjoyable way.

Carefully consider your current lifestyle when deciding where and how you

want to retire. Make a simple list of what truly matters to you, the things that

shape your everyday happiness. For example, if you have beloved pets, you’ll

want to ensure your chosen home or village is pet-friendly. Likewise, consider

whether you value gardening space, easy access to walking trails, proximity

to family, or a strong social community. These small but meaningful details

can make the difference between simply having a place to live, and creating a

retirement that feels like home.

Healthcare matters

One of the biggest concerns in

retirement is access to healthcare.

The Lowveld is well-equipped with

hospitals, private specialists, and

clinics in Mbombela, White River,

and surrounding towns. Many

retirement estates also partner with

local healthcare providers, offering

residents preferential access to

nurses, home visits, and emergency

care.

For peace of mind, it’s worth

ensuring:

• Your medical aid covers both local

facilities and possible transfers to

larger centres.

• You know which frail care and

assisted living options are nearby.

• You keep a reliable network of local

doctors and specialists.

Home and lifestyle

The type of home you choose in retirement will shape your daily rhythm.

• Retirement villages and estates: Local estates are designed with security,

convenience and community in mind. Many include clubhouses, walking

trails, swimming pools, and on-site events that make it easy to stay active and

social. Some also offer step-up care facilities, which means you can move from

independent living to assisted or frail care without leaving the community.

• Frail care and assisted living: This is a crucial long-term consideration. The

Lowveld has several reputable frail care centres with trained staff, providing

services ranging from short-term rehabilitation after surgery to full-time support.

Planning ahead ensures peace of mind for both you and your family.

• Private homes: If you prefer the independence of your own home, smaller

townhouses or cluster homes can make upkeep easier, while still keeping you

connected to neighbours and services.

Hobbies and activities

Retirement offers a chance to

rediscover the things that bring you

joy, such as hobbies you never had

time for. In the Lowveld, the options

are broad:

• Gardening: The fertile soil and

warm climate make for excellent

gardening options, whether you’re

tending roses or growing your own

vegetables. Even if your space is

limited, a herb garden on a small

patio is an excellent option if you

have green fingers.

• Sports and clubs: Bowls, golf,

bridge, photography, hiking,

walking, and birding groups are

abundant, offering both activity and

social connection. Many retirement

estates also offer gym facilities.

• Arts and culture: Local galleries,

craft markets, and choirs offer plenty

of ways to get involved, from selling

your hand-made goodies to simply

appreciating the talent around you.

• Volunteering: Many retirees give

time to conservation projects,

schools, and NGOs, a meaningful

way to stay engaged while giving

back.

Financial and practical considerations

While this is a time to kick back and relax, it’s important to always be mindful of

the practicalities:

• Estate levies: Retirement villages and lifestyle estates often include levies for

security, maintenance, and facilities, it is important to factor this into your budget.

• Utilities and backups: Load-shedding and water interruptions remain realities.

Many retirees invest in solar power, generators or boreholes.

• Transport: While most facilities are close at hand, having a plan for transport as

you age (whether its family, community transport, or retirement village shuttles) is

wise. As this can become costly, it must also be factored into your budget.

The truth is that retirement isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some thrive on active

schedules filled with golf, gardening and travel, while others, such as retired

teachers, love to work on a part-time basis giving extra lessons. Others prefer the

quiet rhythm of reading, family visits, and small routines. There is plenty of scope

to create the retirement you want, supported by good healthcare, a more relaxed

lifestyle, warm community life, and the beauty of the region with all the activities

it offers.

Retirement isn’t just about where you live, but how you live. With the right mix of

planning and openness, your retirement years can be as rich and rewarding as

any that came before, rooted in community, supported by care, and surrounded

by the natural beauty we’re fortunate to call home.

Health and wellness

Health isn’t just physical;

it’s also emotional and

social. Retirement can be

deeply rewarding if you stay

connected:

• Join clubs or interest groups to

keep your social circle strong.

• Make physical activity part

of your routine, even a daily

walk in the estate can make a

difference.

• Keep learning, many retirees

take up new languages,

creative arts, or even online

courses.

The pros of living in a retirement village

When people hear the words ‘retirement village,’ they often picture quiet

streets, a slower pace, and residents well into their senior years. But the

concept has been evolving, and so too has the average age of people

considering this option. With early retirement becoming more common

and lifestyles shifting, retirement villages are no longer only for those

in their later years, they offer real advantages to anyone looking for

community, security and convenience.

1

A built-in community

One of the strongest appeals of a retirement village is the sense

of belonging it fosters. Loneliness can affect people at any age, but

particularly when career or family circumstances change. Villages are

designed to encourage interaction through communal spaces, shared

events, and an overall culture of togetherness. For those seeking new

friendships and a support system, this built-in community is invaluable.

2

Safety and peace of mind

Retirement villages are generally

built with security in mind. Controlled

access points, regular patrols, and

emergency systems provide a strong

sense of safety, especially for people

living alone or those who travel

frequently. Knowing that your home

and well-being are looked after allows

residents to relax and enjoy their

daily lives.

3

Low-maintenance living

The practical benefits are just as

important. Many retirement villages

take care of gardening, maintenance,

and even some household repairs.

This frees up both time and energy,

letting residents focus less on chores

and more on enjoying their days.

For younger retirees, this is a way to

trade the responsibilities of traditional

home ownership for more freedom.

4

Access to healthcare

and support services

Most modern villages integrate

healthcare services, ranging

from on-call nurses to on-site

clinics or wellness centres. Even

for younger residents who

may not yet need this level of

care, knowing that it’s available

provides reassurance for the

future. It can also be helpful for

people with chronic conditions

who prefer quick access to

support without having to

navigate city traffic or long

queues.

5

Facilities for an active lifestyle

Today’s retirement villages often

place a strong emphasis on fitness and

recreation. Gyms, swimming pools, tennis

courts, and walking trails are increasingly

common. For those who take early

retirement, these facilities mean they

can keep active, social, and engaged

without leaving their community. This

is particularly appealing to younger

residents who want their retirement to

feel less like ‘slowing down’ and more

like shifting gears into a healthier, more

enjoyable rhythm.

6

Financial and lifestyle flexibility

Depending on the model, retirement

villages can offer more predictable living

expenses. Some provide meal plans,

transport, or bundled utilities, which

simplifies budgeting. Downsizing into a

retirement village can also free up capital

from selling a larger home, giving residents

more financial flexibility for travel, hobbies, or

family support.

7

A focus on quality of life

Above all, retirement villages are

designed with lifestyle in mind. They give

people the opportunity to live among likeminded

neighbours, reduce daily burdens,

and gain access to services and amenities

that make life easier and richer. Whether one

is 55 or 85, the emphasis is on creating an

environment where people can thrive.

Retirement villages are no longer simply about end-of-life care, they’re about

enhancing day-to-day living at any stage of retirement. For younger retirees

they offer freedom, activity, and connection, while providing the reassurance

that future needs are already anticipated.

RUSTIG HOME

Roughing it... in style

The Lowveld is a treasure trove of biodiversity,

dramatic landscapes, and unforgettable

wildlife experiences.

For those who want to immerse

themselves in nature without

sacrificing comfort, glamping

(glamorous camping) is the perfect

way to explore the magical panorama

right on our doorstep.

Glamping combines the thrill of

camping with the luxury of modern

amenities. Imagine sleeping in a

canvas safari tent, high-end motor

home, or a chic cabin, complete with

comfortable beds, electricity, private

bathrooms, and air conditioning, all

set against the backdrop of untamed

wilderness. In the Lowveld, this often

means waking up to the sounds of

birdsong, watching impalas graze

nearby, or enjoying a sundowner

while listening to the distant roar

of lions.

Glamping destinations in the area

include lodges and private reserves

near the Kruger National Park, such

as Marloth Park, Hazyview and Sabie.

Each offers a unique experience -

some focus on wildlife encounters,

and others on river views, hiking, or

bush-based wellness retreats. Many

glampsites also provide guided safari

drives, birdwatching tours, and

cultural experiences with local

communities.

Pros

1Comfort and convenience: Unlike

traditional camping, you don’t

have to bring your own gear or rough

it. Comfortable bedding, running

water, and if you’re lucky, even

gourmet meals are provided.

2Immersive nature experience:

Glamping places you in the heart

of the wilderness, offering a chance

to experience wildlife and natural

beauty up close, without leaving the

comforts of a cosy tent or cabin.

3Ideal for beginners and families:

If you’re new to camping or

travelling with children, glamping

removes many of the typical barriers

and makes the experience a bit easier

and more enjoyable for all ages.

4Unique experiences: Many

Lowveld glampsites offer private

bush walks, stargazing, and early

morning safaris that you wouldn’t

get in a traditional hotel setting.

Cons

1Cost: Glamping is generally

more expensive than traditional

camping, though it is still more

affordable than many lodges or

hotels in the area.

2Limited amenities in some

locations: While many sites offer

electricity and Wi-Fi, some remote

locations might still have minimal

connectivity.

3Wildlife risks: Being close to

wildlife can be thrilling, but

it also requires caution. Snakes,

insects, and even larger animals like

elephants or lions can pose dangers

if safety rules aren’t followed.

4Seasonal weather: The Lowveld

can be extremely hot in summer,

and heavy rains can make some

roads impassable, affecting access

to your site. In most cases this won’t

be an issue, but it can, and has, been

known to happen.

Tips for a memorable Lowveld glamping experience

• Pack smart: Even though many

amenities are provided, bring essentials

like insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat,

binoculars, and a refillable water bottle.

• Follow safety guidelines: Always

adhere to the instructions given by

guides or staff regarding wildlife

encounters. Never feed animals, and

always keep a safe distance.

• Book early: Popular glampsites near

the Kruger and other reserves fill up

quickly, especially during holiday

seasons.

• Plan activities: Research and

schedule game drives, bush walks, or

cultural experiences in advance to

make the most of your stay.

• Respect the environment:

Glamping is about connecting with

nature responsibly. Do not litter or

leave anything behind when you

leave, do not disturb or feed the

wildlife, and leave the site as pristine as

you found it.

Glamping in the Lowveld offers a rare

chance to experience the beauty of

our province in comfort and style.

Whether you’re seeking adventure,

tranquillity, or a family-friendly escape,

it allows you to enjoy the thrill of the

bush without sacrificing the luxuries

that make a holiday truly relaxing.

By planning wisely, respecting the

environment, and embracing the

beauty around you, your glamping

experience can become an

unforgettable adventure into the heart

of nature.

What not to do:

Do not ignore safety instructions or approach wild animals. Never leave food

out unattended, as it can attract animals such as monkeys and baboons to

your tent. Avoid noisy behaviour at night, as this can disturb both the animals

and fellow guests. Finally, don’t rely solely on your phone or electronics; the

magic of the Lowveld lies in its natural, immersive beauty.

Spring calls for ease, colour, and a touch

of mischief. It’s the season of floral

dresses, wide-brimmed hats, and the

clink of ice in glasses.

Grapefruit jam jar

This is as easy as it sounds - rustic, refreshing, and bursting

with flavour. The slight bitterness of grapefruit is balanced

with either elderflower cordial or sparkling water and mint,

making it a perfect daytime drink.

Ingredients

• 1 shot gin or vodka • 1 tsp sugar syrup (or a drizzle of honey)

• Juice of half a pink grapefruit • A few mint leaves • Elderflower

cordial, sparkling or soda water • Ice

Method

Fill a clean jam jar or tumbler with ice. Add the gin or vodka,

grapefruit juice and syrup. Clap the mint leaves between your

palms and add them in. Top with elderflower or water, stir

gently, and garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a mint sprig.

Serve with a straw and sunshine.

Note: For a refreshing alcohol-free flavour burst, omit the gin

or vodka.

It’s also the perfect time to refresh your cocktail (and mocktail) repertoire with

drinks that are light, fragrant, and irresistibly pretty, along with a basket of crisp

finger foods to pass around.

Let’s begin with the drinks. Whether you like your cocktails with a heady

helping of your favourite tipple, or prefer an alcohol-free, but just as scrummy,

alternative, the options are endless, and with the aforementioned citrus (among

other fruits) so readily available, there is no reason why sundowners shouldn’t

be a nightly affair.

The blue margarita

The classic margarita gets a whimsical

spring makeover with blue curaçao, all

the zing of citrus with a shimmering

ocean hue.

Ingredients

• 1 shot silver tequila • ½ shot triple sec

• ½ shot blue curaçao • Juice of one

lime • Ice • Coarse salt (optional, for

the rim)

Method

Run a lime wedge around the rim of

a glass and dip into salt. Shake the

tequila, triple sec, blue curaçao and

lime juice over ice in a cocktail shaker.

Strain into a chilled glass and serve

immediately. It’s crisp, dramatic and

dangerously drinkable.

Mimosa two ways: classic and virgin

The mimosa is pure morning joy - all bubbles and citrus, with very little effort.

Serve in champagne flutes for that brunch-at-the-Ritz feeling.

Classic Mimosa

• ½ glass chilled sparkling wine • ½ glass freshly squeezed orange juice

Virgin Mimosa

• ½ glass orange juice • ½ glass sparkling water or kombucha

Note: Add orange zest curls or edible flowers for an elegant touch.

Citrus mint mojito

The mojito is an icon for a

reason; mint, lime, sugar, and

rum make magic together. This

version folds in extra citrus for a

brighter, zestier profile.

Ingredients

• A generous handful of mint

leaves • Juice of 1 lime • Juice of

½ orange • 2 tsp brown sugar • 1

shot white rum • Soda water • Ice

Method

In a tall glass, muddle the sugar,

lime juice, orange juice, and mint

leaves together until the mint

is bruised and fragrant. Add the

rum and a handful of ice, then

top with soda water. Stir and

garnish with more mint and a

slice of orange.

• ½ tsp paprika • 1 small garlic clove

(crushed) • 1 tsp dried herbs • Juice of

½ lemon • Pinch of salt & black pepper

Method

Potato wedges

Preheat oven to 200°C. Toss wedges in

oil, ground chillies, paprika, cayenne,

black pepper, dried herbs, and salt until

well coated. Spread on a lined baking

tray and roast 35-40 mins, flipping

halfway, until crisp outside and fluffy

inside.

Onion rings

Heat oil in a deep pan (170°C). Whisk

together flour, paprika, cayenne, dried

sparkling water to form a light batter.

Dip onion rings into batter, let excess

drip off, then fry in small batches 2-3

mins until golden. Drain on paper

towels.

Chilli-herb dip

Stir all ingredients together until

smooth. Adjust seasoning with extra

lemon or salt to taste. Pile the wedges

and onion rings into a lined basket.

Add a small bowl of chilli-herb dip on

the side. Best eaten hot, with plenty of

napkins and something ice-cold and

fruity to sip on.
