Why you should lock your doors
BY DANIEL ALVEY
This is the moment a CCTV
camera captured a brazen
intruder entering a home while
the householder watched TV
just metres away – completely
unaware of what was
happening.
Not only did the intruder
enter the house once, he
returned 10 minutes later to
steal more items.
The incident happened just
after 10pm last Wednesday
when the offender slipped
in through an unlocked
ranchslider at the back of
the Prebbleton house. A
neighbour’s security camera
recorded the break-in.
It is believed the offender
may have been casing the area
before striking.
A 42-year-old has since been
arrested and will appear in
court on October 24 facing
four charges of burglary and
two of receiving property.
The burglaries include two
commercial premises in
Rangiora.
The intruder took a bag containing
a wallet and keys, and
the keys to a work ute, from a
table – about three metres from
where the householder was
watching TV. A wall separates
the part of the room where the
table was from the lounge.
Ten minutes later, the
offender returned, this time taking
a backpack near the same
spot. Again, the householder
was unaware of what was
happening.
The householder’s stepdaughter,
Renae McEntee, who was in
her room at the time, said the
incident had shaken her.
“I did not sleep the whole
night after it happened, and
I’m still a bit on edge now.”
McEntee heard her step
father’s ute start up, but
thought nothing of it.
The burglary was only discovered
when McEntee’s
mother returned home from
visiting a family member at
Christchurch Hospital.
“She came home and said,
‘Where’s the ute?’ and that’s
when we knew it had been
stolen,” McEntee said.
Another neighbour’s home
security camera picked up a
blue car coming and going in
the street for about an hour.
McEntee believes it was casing
the area.
“You could see it driving
around the street very slowly,”
she said.
McEntee said police told her
the arrested man was found
with the number plates and
keys from the ute, which has
not been found.
She said since the burglary,
the family has installed
security cameras and are now
more vigilant about locking
doors.
Ferrymead
Heritage Park
BY KEES CHALMERS
Ferrymead Heritage Park is in
financial trouble and is looking
at cost cutting and possible job
losses.
The outlook comes after it
missed out on more funding
from the city council.
A recent bid for $320,000
from the city council’s strengthening
communities fund failed,
on the back of missing out in
June on a $700,000 to $1.2 million
a year for the next three
years as part of the council’s
Annual Plan.
Said Ferrymead Trust chair
Jackie Sutherland: “It’s week
to week at the moment. We’re
looking at cost cutting, expenditure,
future events, looking at
any way to get some funds.
“It’s a case of survive, revive
and thrive going forward for
the park.”
The trust had a meeting
following the city council’s
decision to discuss its future.
Ian France
Sutherland said closing was
“not an option”.
Ferrymead Heritage Park general
manager Ian France said
the lack of funding could mean
potential job losses for current
full-time staff.
“We’re looking at going into
a volunteer model, with more
volunteers running the park,”
he said.
The park currently employs
six full-time staff.
France said the park is
looking at looking at every
line item in its expenditure to
see where costs can be saved,
and is considering corporate
sponsorship as an alternative
revenue source.
Restoration of the Chalice to resume
BY GEOFF SLOAN
Work to finish restoring the
Chalice in Cathedral Square is
due to start next month, after
the project was put on hold
over winter.
It includes painting the
structure. Botanic Gardens
and Garden Parks director
Wolfgang Bopp they wanted
to make it easier for the
paint to dry on the hexagonal
steel cone to ensure the best
possible finish.
Long-time Aranui resident Pam
Williams is campaigning to
bring buses back to her suburb.
The 76-year-old, who cannot
drive, said the lack of bus
services is leaving elderly and
disabled people stuck in their
homes.
She has started a petition calling
for the return of the bus
route through Aranui, which
stopped with the 2011 earthquake.
Routes now focus on
Pages Rd and Wainoni Rd to
either side of the suburb.
Pam said many couldn’t make
the long trek to the nearest bus
stop.
“There’s about 5000 people
in this community between
Wainoni and Pages Rd. A high
percentage of them are elderly,
with walking frames and the
like. We can taxi, but (the bus
route) would open up the whole
area up. We are all stuck in our
homes here.”
Pam has health issues and
said breathing difficulties made
the 700m walk to the closest bus
stop impossible.
“I can catch a taxi down to get
my groceries, and then I have to
send him away and get another
one home. It’s all stress.”
Stats NZ figures show the
median income for adults in
Aranui is $29,100, compared to
$41,500 for New Zealand.
completing the work in the
warmer months rather than
The aluminium leaves were
removed in March and taken
off-site for restoration and
painting. Repairs were also
needed for areas of corrosion
on the nearly 25-year-old
artwork.
The restoration was
originally scheduled to be
completed by July.
The 18m-high Chalice, or
‘Millennium Cone’ was created
principal Peggy Burrows said
the lack of bus access was a
huge issue for students, as
many families didn’t drive or
didn’t own a car.
She said it was an equity issue
that needed to be addressed.
Pam has gathered more than
750 signatures, but said many
residents felt the area was so
often overlooked for services
there was no hope of getting the
route back.
Said Christchurch East
Labour MP Reuben Davidson:
“We have buses that pass down
$400,000 to purchase in 2001,
drew criticism in March.
City councillor James Gough
called for an “immediate
halt” to restoration work
and described the cost as
“ludicrous.”
City council general
manager citizens and
community Andrew Rutledge
said the cost reflected the
specialist nature and scale
of the project. He said work
was funded from the existing
Chalice conservation project,
so had no future rates impact.
Bring back the bus: ‘We
are all stuck in our homes’
and deliver the most direct service
for the greatest number of
people.”
Gibbon said a network
review was due next year. He
also said all network changes
rely on funding from central
government, with the earliest
opportunity to apply from October
26, during the next national
land transport programme
budget review.
Pam said she was continuing
to collect signatures to boost
her plea to the council, but her
lack of mobility was holding
her back.
A High Court judge has upheld a
The company admitted seven
breaches of the Anti-Money
agreed to pay the penalty earlier
this year. In a decision released
on Monday, Justice Rachel
not directly involved in money
‘Survive, revive and thrive’
Admission prices increased
by $5 in September. Adults now
France said the park had
received $1.5 million from the
communities strengthening
fund over the past 10 years.
“We were disappointed, a
bit surprised as well,” he said
about missing out this year.
The money would have been
used for infrastructure repairs,
which will now be delayed, and
operational costs.
City council head of community
support and partnerships,
John Filsell, said the decision
not to fund Ferrymead was
made for a number of reasons.
“The grant funding requested
would not have allowed the
park to remain open over the
duration of the grant (one year)
in a manner described in the
(Ferrymead’s) application.
“The applicant could not demonstrate
medium to long-term
sustainability due to its substantial
reliance on future grant
funding and unconfirmed revenue
sources,” he said.
Low revenue income combined
with high operating costs,
and an increased number of
applicants for funding were
also factors.
France disagreed about the
long-term sustainability of Ferrymead
and said this had not
been communicated to the park.
It is challenging times ahead for Ferrymead Heritage Park after it missed out on the latest round of city council funding.
There was $3,762,107 available
in the fund with the average
grant $12,000.
Fund committee chair and
Linwood Ward city councillor
Yani Johanson said Ferrymead’s
situation has not improved to
the point where it is sustainable
without significant funding.
It has received $878,000 in
council grants over the past five
years, he said.
Johanson passed a resolution
to ensure council continue to
work with the park towards a
long-term solution and minimise
operational costs after the
local body election next week.
“No one wants to see the park
collapse or fall over,” he said.
Heathcote Ward
city councillor and
mayoral hopeful Sara
Templeton told The
Star she had expected
the strengthening
communities funding
to continue for the
park.
Templeton was
disappointed with the
outcome but said short-term
funding options are not the
answer for the park.
Sara Templeton
France said the park’s situation
is challenging.
“It is what it is and we’ve got
to work with that accordingly.
We are being as
positive as we can be,” he
said.
Admissions have
increased on the previous
year, he said.
Roadworks get under way in inner south-east
Spring roading upgrades are
kicking off throughout the
central city.
City council city infrastructure
general manager Brent
Smith said people should expect
delays, particularly when travelling
around the south-east
central area over the next few
months.
“One of our biggest packages
of work will be the safety
improvements at two intersections
on Moorhouse Ave,
starting Monday 13 October.
“We’re putting in new crossings
to make the intersections
safer for people moving around
this busy part of town, like
those heading to the new stadium
when it opens next April.”
Construction will take about
four weeks and traffic management
will be in place.
The project was approved by
the city council in June, after
community consultation in
April.
Work will take place at the
intersections of Moorhouse
Ave, Gasson St and Madras St,
and Moorhouse Ave, Barbadoes
Stand Waltham Rd at the same
time.
Later this month the fences
around One New Zealand
Stadium at Te Kaha will be coming
down so the grounds can be
connected to the surrounding
neighbourhood.
“With the landscaping in
the stadium grounds coming
together really well, we’re now
ready to connect the footpaths
and complete the precinct,” said
Smith.
Temporary fences will be
placed around the stadium on
Madras, Tuam and Barbadoes
Sts while asphalt is laid and
street furniture, bike stands,
and a bus shelter are installed.
“Temporary lane closures
will need to be in place so
contractors can work safely,”
said Smith.
The work is expected to
finish in mid-December, when
temporary fences will be moved
into the stadium boundary
where they will remain until
the stadium opens in April
2026.
“With these two projects, and
several other jobs scheduled
between now and Christmas,
we want to give people a heads
up to expect some disruption in
the area.
“We know roadworks can be
challenging and we’re working
with our contractors to get
everything done as efficiently as
possible,” Smith said.
Other upcoming works in
south-east central include:
• Paving stone repairs on High
St from October 6-19.
• Night works at the
Manchester and Lichfield St
intersection from October 12-15
while new traffic lights and
electronic signage is installed.
• Geotechnical investigative
work on Fitzgerald Ave during
November.
• Night works on Manchester
St, between Lichfield and
Tuam Sts, in November while
resurfacing takes place.
Roofing company
owes $1m after
debt efforts fail
A roofing company squeezed by
rising costs and tight margins owes
creditors more than $1.1 million after
unsuccessful attempts to reduce debt.
MJ Roofing & Cladding Ltd was
placed into voluntary liquidation on
October 1 by managing director Matthew
Johnson with Insolvency Matters’
Brenton Hunt appointed as liquidator.
Financial advice was sought in April
with the sole shareholder initially
wanting to continue trading until
reversing the decision.
The company was shown in the
liquidator’s first report on October 6 to
owe about $40,000 in staff wages and
holiday pay, while Inland Revenue
was estimated to be owed $500,000
and unsecured creditors about
$600,000.
The total shortfall is estimated at
$850,000 as about $250,000 in outstanding
payments for work by the
business is expected to be retrieved,
while company assets are being
assessed.
MJ Roofing & Cladding had put
up roofing and exterior cladding
for commercial and residential
buildings, including large property
developments.
First registered as a company in
2019, it is the latest among construction
businesses to tip over this year in
a weaker building market.
Hunt said the director told him the
company had faced a combination
of industry pressures and companyspecific
challenges, including rising
materials and operating costs.
The business struggled as a result
of project delays, increased employer
and subcontractor costs and tight margins
in a competitive industry.
As a result, the company had fallen
behind with an IRD assessment, he said.
‘‘The company had entered payment
arrangements, but they were more
than the company could afford in a
reducing economy. The company had
attempted to restructure and reduce
costs, but this was not enough to make
it economic, so the shareholders made
the decision to place the company into
voluntary liquidation.’’
Among the 41 unsecured creditors
were IRD and ACC as well as building
suppliers and service, energy, debt collection
and related companies, with
nine individuals identified.
The eight secured creditors were
bank, steel, finance and other companies
with security interests to goods
and vehicles or general security
agreements.
Hunt said it was unknown whether
enough assets would cover payments
to creditors, but it was looking
unlikely at this stage.
Quake research offers future strategies
BY DYLAN SMITS
After witnessing the ground
shift during the Christchurch
earthquakes, researcher
Erin McEwan set out to help
landowners and councils better
understand how quakes affect
rivers and flood risks.
The 35-year-old geologist
recently completed her PhD
at Canterbury University
and has created the world’s
first database showing how
earthquakes have affected
rivers and flood protection
strategies in the past.
“We can’t stop earthquakes
or floods, but we can help
people be ready for them,” said
McEwan.
“My goal is to get this into
the hands of councils and
planners so they can run their
own ‘what if’ scenarios and
make smart decisions for their
communities.”
McEwan remembers when
she first witnessed the power of
earthquakes to move land, silt
and water on February 22, 2011
– when she worked in a quite
different profession.
“I was a video game artist at
a little indie studio on Hereford
St. We were on the second floor
when the earthquake hit and
it was so violent we just fell off
our chairs.”
She remembers leaving the
city centre on foot and seeing
large pools of liquefaction
flowing out of the ground.
“Part of my drive with my
“We can’t stop
earthquakes, but we
can help people be
ready for them”
research is remembering how
unprepared I felt during the
quake. I’d like to help mitigate
that feeling for people. If you
can’t stop an earthquake, at
least being prepared offers
some sense of security,” she
said.
McEwan lost her job two
months after the earthquake.
She ended up working for IAG,
handling earthquake damage
insurance claims.
“It all made me realise I didn’t
know much about earthquakes.
All I knew was to expect
shaking, but not how violent the
shaking, or all the other impacts
that happened, like liquefaction
and the change in flood hazard
across the city,” she said.
McEwan was spurred to start
an undergraduate geology
degree in 2017 and ended up
staying for eight-and-half years,
becoming a PhD student.
McEwan and her team
studied 52 earthquakes around
the world where rivers were
affected by fault ruptures.
They combined this global
data with New Zealand’s
fault maps and existing flood
modelling techniques to test
future scenarios.
She hopes the work will
help emergency planners and
councils better prepare for
future disasters and mitigate
flood risk.
“In New Zealand, where
we have thousands of rivers
and lots of active fault lines,
it’s inevitable that they will
intersect and interact,” she said.
Earthquake-related flooding
could affect 3700 rivers if
the fault lines beneath them
rupture.
McEwan’s research shows
earthquakes can cause rivers
to shift, flood, or get blocked
entirely, sometimes creating
permanent dams and lakes.
This can lead to serious
flooding not just during an
earthquake but for months or
years afterwards.
McEwan’s work was
supported by a Natural Hazards
Commission research grant
awarded to her PhD supervisor,
Dr Timothy Stahl, to study
earthquake-related hazards.
Bulls return to
premiership final
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Two years ago, the Canterbury
Bulls stood hands on head
after being relegated from the
national men’s rugby league
premiership.
Now back in the top
flight, the Bulls are just
one win away from their
first title in 11 years, having
topped the southern
pool.
They will face northern
winners Counties Manukau
at Auckland’s Massey
Park in the grand final on
Sunday.
The Bulls went
unbeaten in pool play, comfortably
beating Aoraki Eels and
Southland Rams before closer
games against Otago Whalers
and Wellington Orcas, who
they beat 34-20 in the capital on
Saturday.
With Counties winning all
their pool games by an average
margin of 28 points while
conceding just seven per game,
Bulls head coach Walt Wilson
knows the challenge ahead.
“They’re very big and robust
and they play very fast footy,”
he said.
Walt Wilson
“They tend to roll through
the middle with big bodies, so
there’s a lot of things we need
to take on board in order to
compete against that.
“I’m just looking forward to
the challenge.”
The Bulls last claimed
the title in 2014, finishing
third on the ladder but
defeating the Waicoa
Bay Stallions in the final
after top-ranked Counties
Manukau and Akarana
Falcons were disqualified
for fielding ineligible
players.
Prior to 2014, the Bulls
won national titles in
2009, 2003, and 2000.
They lost the 2019 and 2022
grand finals to Akarana before
their 2023 relegation.
Wilson said returning to the
top of the competition would be
a special moment for him and
the team.
“With this group of men
it would be bloody special
because they’re a really good
group,” he said.
“Last year I got on the phone
to talk to a lot of different
players to see what their
answers were ‘I don’t really
know’ or ‘I’m unsure’. This year
we didn’t have anyone say no.
They all wanted to be part of it.
“Now we’re in this position,
I think they’re realising it even
more – they are representing
their province, their family,
their friends, their teammates
and their clubs.
“I'd love to think there could
be a moment where we can
put our hands up and say ‘look,
we’re the best in New Zealand’.”
Meanwhile, the Canterbury
women’s team ended their
premiership campaign in third
place after a 30-18 win over
Wellington on Saturday.
First-half tries to Bayli Rapira,
Kyla Lynch-Brown and Lucy
Mahuika saw the team up 18-0
at half-time, before Wellington
fought back to level the scores
with 12 minutes to go.
Caitlin Sears and Shade
McGregor-Pakau scored late to
seal the victory.
The Bulls finished behind
Counties Manukau and Akarana
Falcons on the ladder, with the
two teams to meet on Sunday in
the women’s grand final.
Siblings making their mark in the ring
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Brother and sister Xavier and
Taylah Tohill are on the rise in
the boxing world after claiming
national titles in Porirua.
Taylah, 14, took her second
consecutive national crown,
winning the 52kg junior female
title, while Xavier, 15, bounced
back from defeat in last year’s
final to claim the 54kg cadet male
title.
The pair, who now train at
Papuni Boxing, first learned the
sport at home, with grandfather
Gary Berg giving tips on an old
punching bag.
“He was always showing the
kids what to do and things like
that,” said their mother Michelle
Berg.
“One day Xavier was punching
on the boxing bag and he was
like, ‘we should get him into boxing,
get him down to the gym and
whatnot’, so it sort of stemmed
from there.”
Xavier started training at Rangiora
Boxing, with Taylah coming
along to watch before eventually
trying it herself.
"She never looked back,” Berg
said.
After starting at Rangiora, they
moved to Papuni Boxing to train
under former New Zealand professional
boxer Reece Papuni for
the past two years, after Xavier
met him at a Canterbury training
session.
“It’s really good. We’ve both
improved so much since we’ve
come here,” Xavier said.
Xavier and Taylor Tohill, who are trained by Reece Papuni, each brought home national titles from the New Zealand boxing
championships.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
That improvement paid off at
the national championships two
weeks ago, where Xavier beat
Manawatū’s Boston Hempel
on a split decision, and Taylah
defeated Emma Deegan, also
from Manawatū, by unanimous
decision.
“I thought I’d done enough,
but sometimes it’s kind-of hard
with the judges. Sometimes they
see stuff that we don’t actually
notice,” Xavier said.
Said Taylah: “I felt like I
did really well because I've
listened to what my coaches
recommended me to do, and it’s
shown in my fights.”
She said it was special to win
alongside her brother for the
first time.
“It’s pretty cool, not many siblings
do that.”
Smiling Tigers boxers Ava
and Lea Newman also claimed
gold, winning the 54kg youth
and 50kg junior female titles
respectively.
Meanwhile, Riverside boxers
celebrated their club’s first
national titles in a decade – and
amateur boxing.
Thomas Harford overcame
Woolston’s Edward Richards in
an all-Canterbury lightweight
(60kg) final to lift the Parisian
Cup by split decision, in what
what many regarded as one of
the most exciting bouts of the
tournament.
Jonty Oorschot, grandson of
Thomas Harford was presented with
the Jameson Belt, while his trainer,
Devan Campbell, took home the
Joe Thwaites Shield at the national
championships.
Riverside founder and former
New Zealand trainer Phil
Shatford, claimed the 62kg
cadet male title.
Harford also received the
Jameson Belt, awarded to the
most scientific elite boxer at
the national championships –
considered the pinnacle of New
Zealand amateur boxing.
Riverside and Canterbury
trainer Devan Campbell was
awarded the Joe Thwaites
Shield for training the Jameson
Belt winner.
Campbell said he felt
“honoured” to win the shield.
“I’m only 31, I’ve worked my
ass off with Thomas these last
few years, knowing what he’s
capable of,” he said.
Harford is among a shortlist
United skipper steps back
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Christchurch United’s positive
start to the National League
will have to continue without
retiring captain Travis Graham.
The 32-year-old has decided
to step away from football, with
Saturday’s 4-2 win
over Miramar
Rangers his final
outing before
heading home to
South Africa with
his family.
He said he was
looking forward
to celebrating his
long career. Travis Graham
“It’s been a long
few years, ups and downs and
all these things, but I think it’s
part of the journey.
“For me now, it’s about giving
back to my family because they
have sacrificed so much for me.
I’ll spend some time with them
and reflect on my career.”
Graham made the decision
to retire after the end of the
Southern League season last
month, but wanted to finish up
in front of United’s home fans at
the weekend.
United have taken the
National League by storm,
topping the table after a 2-0 win
over Auckland United in round
one and Saturday’s comeback
victory over Miramar, where
they overturned a 2-1 halftime
deficit.
They will meet Wellington
Phoenix Reserves this weekend,
who are boosted by the return
Graham believes United have
what it takes to stay at the top.
“We have the quality, we just
need to believe in ourselves,”
he said.
“Sometimes the players have
too much respect for the clubs
up north, because they are quality
teams, so playing against
them is a good test for us.
“But these first two games
showed that we are capable of
doing it.”
Coastal Spirit will need to
recover quickly from their chastening
they host Chatham Cup winners
Final rematch to
start women’s
interclub season
BY DIANE KEENAN
Defending champions Elmwood
have a tough first-round
match in the premier women’s
interclub on Saturday, taking
on Bishopdale in a repeat of last
year’s final.
Both teams have similar lineups
to last season and boast
impressive No 1s.
Elmwood’s Abby Mason
went unbeaten in singles
and doubles last year,
while Bishopdale’s Aliyah
Daly is a New Zealand
junior representative.
Newcomers Edgeware,
who replaced Shirley in
the competition, face a Te
Kura Hagley side featuring
Adele Orangi, who
notched up 100 premier
interclub wins last year.
Edgeware will be led by
former Shirley No 1 Nishitha
Maarka.
Cashmere, captained
by Jenny Blackburn, meet
Waimairi, which again
has Otago’s Charlie Byers
at No 1.
Cashmere will also be
celebrating the success of
former team member Lucia
Abby Mason
Aliyah Daly
Gale, now based in Australia,
who won the girls’ final of the
International Tennis Federation
J60 tournament at Wilding Park
last weekend.
The men’s competition also
starts this weekend after rain
saw the opening round cancelled.
Burnside Park/Sumner will
be buoyed by the recent form of
young guns Sakeri Parnell
and Jack Hansen-Ratter.
Parnell won the boys’
ITF event at Wilding Park,
while Hansen-Ratter
reached the semi-finals.
They play Te Kura Hagley
on Saturday.
There will be no shortage
of rivalry when
Elmwood face Mid Canterbury,
with former
Elmwood players Jack
Tiller, Josh Gilbert and
Ryan Watt now turning
out for the opposition.
Cashmere begin their
title defence against
Bishopdale, whose squad
includes youngsters
Nicholas Rayner and
Louis de Lautour, along with
The Way
We Were
Four men on penny farthings in the 1880s. Right – the
crowd shows mixed interest during the second day of test
cricket between New Zealand and England in 1971.
1881 – LANCASTER PARK OPENS
While many sports fans will
remember Lancaster Park for
rugby and cricket, athletics
was its first and perhaps most
famous code.
The park opened on
October 15, 1881 with an
athletics meet, after the
previous Saturday’s cricket
was postponed because of
rain. Years later, in 1962, Peter
Snell would set a new 800m
world record of 1:44.3 on the
park’s grass track – and with
it a new New Zealand record,
which held until last year.
The park was named
after Benjamin Lancaster,
the first European owner
of the land. Rural Section
62, as the 10-acre block was
previously known, was sold
to the Canterbury Cricket
and Sports Co Ltd after its
formation in 1880.
The idea of a ground owned
by sporting codes where
spectators paid gate charges
came about because the Public
Reserves Act forbade local
bodies from enclosing and
charging admission to parks
and reserves. Lancaster Park
was later vested to the Crown
in 1919.
Great sporting moments
in the park’s history include
the 1985 Ranfurly Shield
challenge, won 28-23 by
Auckland, and NZ’s first test
cricket win against Australia.
A multitude of musicians
performed there, while more
than 100,000 turned out to see
Reverend Billy Graham.
Less well known is that the
park was a popular spot for
ballooning in its early days,
and during WW1 its main
oval became a potato farm
to help pay the bills.
Lancaster Park was
renamed Jade Stadium in
1998, and AMI Stadium at
Lancaster Park in 2007.
Damaged in the 2011
earthquake, the stadium
was demolished and the
park redeveloped and
reopened in 2022.
PRIOR to 2020 the Nairobi Trio had
been regular visitors to Lyttelton over
many years. Following a log hiatus they
returned in 2024 to a rapturous reception.
e audience were again drawn into their
world as the band weaved their magic,
demonstrating the freedom of expression
you could only expect from such
seasoned professionals.
Always playing to the crowd, their
energy and uidity traverses a wideranging
repertoire lled with skilfully
craed original material, re-imagined jazz
standards, as well as selected tracks off
their 10 studio albums (spanning three
and a half decades), all delivered in their
own inimitable style.
Described a ‘New Zealand’s Favourite
Jazz Entertainers’, the Nairobi Trio tour
the globe performing in all manner of
settings - you name it, they’ve probably
played it - from Village Halls and
Tehatres, Clubs and Festivals across NZ,
Australia, Asia, the Pacic and Northern
Europe.
