Flow turns struggle into service

For more than a decade, Florence
“Flow” Waaka has been
cooking meals and offering
warmth to those doing it tough.
Waaka, 58, started Feed a Bro
after being judged by others
while seeking help to feed her
family 10 years ago.
“I was struggling on a benefit
with a son and I was looking
after my grandkids at the time,”
she said.
One of her friends told her
a free food service was being
offered in the central city.
“So I went in, and all I could
hear was people saying, ‘what’s
that lady doing here? She
shouldn’t be here, she’s got a
car and she doesn’t look like she
needs these feeds’.”
She said just because she had
a car, people assumed she was
well off.
“The free food we got during
the week helped me and my
family to survive.”
The experience left a sour
taste in her mouth, so Waaka
decided to set up her own free,
non-judgemental meal service.
“I don’t judge anyone because
I’m in the same boat as a lot of
them. I really am.”

meals at The Margaret Mahy

and in Cathedral Square on
Tuesdays.
She also takes food out to
homeless people living in the

“Well it’s okay for them to say
that.”
Waaka said high rents and
the price of food going up were
forcing some people to live in
their cars.
“Everything is just skyrocketing.
I know what it’s like
struggling with all the prices of
food right now.”
The beneficiary isn’t aligned
to any charity or organisation.
“I look at it like it’s my job,
it’s what I do. Even though I’m
getting a benefit from the government,
I feel like I’m giving
back, by what I'm doing.”
Waaka has found it hard to
find work, as she doesn’t have
any qualifications.
At one point she was also
homeless with her son and two
grandchildren.
“I was working part-time and
then my daughter needed some
help. It wasn’t working out
with childcare and all that, so
I threw my job in to look after
them.”
She said rent became too
much to afford and she was out
on the street.
“I was staying at my sister’s
and living in a car for probably
about eight months before I got
a house through Kāinga Ora.”
She said much of the country

them. There’s a lot of homeless
people out there.”
She said she was always looking
for things to do and ways
to encourage people to donate
goods to “keep this thing going”.
“This is it. This is my life.”

school bell taken

A stolen 165-year-old school bell
is believed to have been cut up
and an attempt made to sell it
for scrap.
The Heathcote Valley School
bell was stolen over the weekend
of September 27-28.
Principal Bruce Ellison said
he was told by a parent the
person involved in the theft
attempted to take the cut-up
bronze bell to a scrap metal
yard, but it was not accepted.
“It’s got a lot of significance
to the community, the fact it’s
been there for so long, it’s an
iconic piece of our identity,”
Ellison said.

and parent Luke Gardiner:
“The reaction is extremely sad,
I didn’t think that was something
that would happen with
the amount of years it’s hung
there.”
Ellison took a photo of where
the bell was usually located on
Monday, September 29, during
the school holidays. Two days
later, he looked at the photo and
realised the bell was missing.
He assumed it had been taken
over the weekend.
The bell is believed to have
been with the school since it
was founded in 1860 by Captain
William Morgan, who used part
of his Morgan’s Valley house as
a classroom.
The school was established at
Heathcote Valley School’s bronze bell
was stolen during the school holidays.

thought weighed about 15-20kg,
had a cast iron striker.
Many generations of children
had heard the bell to go out to
play or come back into class, he

The school has been loaned
a small hand bell while it

with something similar,” Ellison
said.

GP’s powerful
message with
every push-up

Howard Wilson has been raising
awareness for prostate cancer,
one push-up at a time.
He completed 739 push-ups
over September, representing the
739 men who died from prostate
cancer last year.
The 69-year-old Akaroa GP took
on the challenge to raise money
for Blue September, an initiative
that supports awareness and
research for prostate cancer.
Wilson is chair of the Akaroa
Men’s Shed Trust, which has
previously run events for the
campaign. This year, the focus
was on exercise, encouraging
participants to walk, cycle, or do
push-ups for the cause.
Having worked as a GP at
Akaroa Health for 33 years,
Wilson has seen first-hand the
importance of getting checked
before it is too late.
He decided to take on the
challenge himself, though early
practice runs in August proved
tougher than expected.
Wilson set a fundraising goal
of $1000, thinking it might be
difficult to reach.
“It’s quite a small
community over here in
Akaroa but they really
came to the party with
the donations”

He ended up raising $5972
– the fifth-highest total by an
individual nationally, and the
most by anyone doing push-ups.
“It’s quite a small community

“I was probably a little bit
overwhelmed by the amount.”
Wilson began posting daily
videos of his push-ups on social
media and quickly gained
support from the community.
He completed push-ups in
all sorts of places – starting
in Croatia while on holiday,
doing his first set aboard a boat
heading down the Adriatic Sea.
He later did push-ups on the

home, he was permitted to use the Akaroa fire station for his daily push-ups, but
only if he did the challenge shirtless and in firefighter gear.

“I must admit, I had great fun
while doing it,” he said.
He recalled being approached
by a complete stranger who told
him he was a prostate cancer
survivor and had donated to the
fundraiser.
Wilson hopes his efforts will
encourage more men to get
regular check-ups.
For him, the 739 push-ups
represented 739 lives that could
have been saved through early
detection and treatment.
“That’s the message we’re
trying to get across.
“A lot of men don’t bother
coming to the doctor and by the
time they’re diagnosed, it could
be quite advanced. But if they
come regularly for checks, we
can detect it early, treat it early
and essentially cure it,” he said.
Wilson said a “bulletproof”
mentality still stops many men
from seeking preventive care.
“I think we're getting there,
but it would still be relatively
unusual for a man to come for a
voluntary health check.”
He is keen to take part in the
challenge again next year, health
permitting.
