From punting to politics
BY KEES CHALMERS
On Sunday Nathaniel Herz
Jardine finished up working as
a part time punter on the Avon
River.
Yesterday, he started started a
new career: City councillor.
The 32-year-old took out the
Heathcote Ward with 5014
votes in saturday’s local body
elections, comfortably heading
off the only other contender
Sumner lawyer, Ian Kearney
(3523 votes).
The ward had been left vacant
after incumbent Sara Templeton
stood only for mayor.
She went down heavily to Phil
Mauger by about 20,000 votes.
Herz Jardine, who will be the
youngest city councillor, said
he found out the result while
cycling to a friend’s house.
“It was mostly just relief
initially. I was feeling confident,
but also just really nervous at
the same time, I had this feeling
that there was a lot of support
in the community for the
campaign,” he said.
A Labour Party member Herz
Jardine joined Labour-aligned
The People’s Choice political
grouping earlier this year. He is
a former Green party member
and was a field organiser for
the Green party during the 2020
election.
Incumbent Heathcote Ward
Community Board members,
Tim Lindley and Will Hall both
retained their positions, beating
Jack Mould and Daniel Nielsen.
Fields wants
progress on
wastewater
project
BY KEES CHALMERS
Tyrone Fields is determined to
see progress on the contentious
Akaroa wastewater scheme in his
second term as Banks Peninsula
Ward city councillor.
He was re-elected on Saturday,
comfortably defeating former
radio host Dave Dunlay.
Fields received
2876 votes to
Dunlay’s 1038 with
Banks Peninsula
again recording
the highest
voter turnout in
Christchurch, with
52.71%.
This will be
Fields’ second Tyrone Fields
term as city
councillor and his fourth on
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks
Peninsula Community Board.
“My response was a bit more
subdued than last time, but I’m
emotional nonetheless.
“You feel pretty relieved
because it (campaigning) takes a
lot out of you,” he said.
His focus will be the Akaroa
wastewater scheme, which has
faced delays and rising costs.
City council staff revealed in
July that the project’s cost had
ballooned to $167 million – $70m
more than previously expected.
Art auction banner mystery
– could this motorist help?
BY KEES CHALMERS
A popular art auction’s
advertising banner has been
targeted in a bizarre theft and
then damaged after it was
replaced.
Police have publicly released
a CCTV image of a motorist who
they say may be able to help
with the investigation into the
Peninsula Art Auction banner
on Norwich Quay.
The image shows a middleaged
brunette on Norwich
Quay in a white Nissan Murano
or Qashqai. The banner was
stolen on October 5 and the
replacement was vandalised on
Sunday.
The auction fundraises for
Lyttelton Primary School by
selling donated art pieces.
It will be held at the school
from November 1-2.
Event organiser Taff Gilvray
said the theft and vandalism
was disappointing. But she was
overwhelmed by support from
the community.
"We’ve had so many people
reaching out with great things
The Lyttelton Scouts repaired the slashed banner. Left – police were looking
for this woman who may be able to help with their investigation into the theft
and damage.
to say and we've had local businesses
offering to replace the
sign. We had another business
who offered us free electronic
signage,” she said.
A group from the Lyttelton
Scouts repaired the banner on
Monday in the pouring rain
without being asked.
The auction is held every
two years and has raised about
$500,000.
It raised $70,000 in 2023. This
year more than 250 pieces from
100 artists will be auctioned off.
Two sketch drawings by
the late Lyttelton artist Bill
Hammond will be auctioned,
as well as pieces from Jason
Greg and ceramics from Nicola
Shanley.
"We're pretty lucky with our
local talent,” she said.
•If you recognise the woman
or have information that
could help with the police
investigation, call 105 or
Jump In
by Nicola McCloy
A guide to 120 top swimming spots you
may not know of around New Zealand From
secluded sandy bays, to crystal clear alpine
lakes, hidden lagoons, rivers and beaches,
Jump In is a guide to Aotearoa’s best swimming
destinations. Best-selling Kiwi author Nicola
McCloy loves to swim. Her years of enjoying
the water have led to this book setting out both
the popular and the secret swimming spots
all around New Zealand. Going from north to
south, with instructions on how to get there,
amenities, ease of access, parking, level of
ability needed and child- and dog-friendliness,
alongside descriptions and stories, all
accompanied by beautiful photos, this is a
book you will want to keep close at hand when
doing a trip of any length - from a day outing to
a full-blown road trip.
Guts by Melissa Leong
Gold Logie-nominated TV personality and food
icon Melissa Leong bites down on her demons
in this searing memoir, exploring themes of
abuse in the hospitality industry, racism, mental
health and, for a light palate cleanser, the
thrill of mouth-wateringly memorable food. An
evocative, sharp, darkly funny and often brutal
account of what it’s like to try, fail and scrape
together the confidence to try again. Leong
shares how her dream of being a concert pianist
crumbled due to chronic pain, her struggles
with racism and identity as a first-generation
Singaporean Chinese woman, how blowing up
her life to reset her path was maybe (definitely!)
worth it, and why going your own way
absolutely is. Garnished with Leong’s favourite
recipes, Guts is above all a glorious love letter
to food, to choosing the unpredictable path and
to believing in yourself even - and especially -
when the odds are stacked against you. No guts,
no glory. Hope you’re hungry.
Cat on the Road to Findout
by Yusuf/Cat Stevens
Embark on an extraordinary journey through the
life, music and spiritual adventures of Yusuf/Cat
Stevens, one of the iconic figures of our time.
This is more than a memoir - it’s a profound
exploration of identity, faith, and the universal
search for meaning. Cat Stevens was launched to
fame in the swinging sixties, with chart-topping
pop hits like ‘Matthew and Son’ and ‘The First Cut
is the Deepest’. His early career was drastically
interrupted by a mortal battle with TB - a
turning point that ignited his quest for peace
and understanding. FINDOUT unveils the untold
chapters of his remarkable journey, illustrated
with dozens of drawings in Yusuf’s own hand.
Self-penned with raw honesty and poetic insight,
he reflects on the challenges, controversies, and
triumphs that have defined his life, offering readers
a rare glimpse into the soul of a man who has lived
multiple lives in one - finally shedding light on all
those hidden ‘in-betweens’.
Lessons on Living
by Nigel Latta
Finding Your Way Through Life’s Ups and Downs
from the respected New Zealand psychologist
and bestselling author
What do you do when you’re told you only have
months to live? If you’re Nigel Latta, first, you’re
going to eat a lot of ice cream. And then you’re
going to assemble a mental toolbox to deal with
every conceivable conundrum the world could
throw at you (the small ones and the big ones).
After three decades working as a clinical
psychologist, Nigel has found there are just three
principles you need to deal with life’s ups and
downs. Whether you want to be a better parent,
build an empire or get through some tough
times, these easy-to-carry principles will help
you to do that.
Consider this book a guide to how to respond in
any situation, drive your own bus, and do it all
with resilience, joy and attention to what matters
most.
Native species get boost from
Extra water
storage for
fire fighting
A successful pest control
programme taking place around
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
has removed nearly 4700
predators, thanks to a network
of volunteers, support from
landowners and city council
funding.
The Whaka Ora Pest Project
(WOPP), run in partnership with
Conservation Volunteers New
Zealand (CVNZ), targets invasive
predators such as possums, rats
and stoats.
It also tackles invasive weeds
including spur valerian, old man’s
beard, banana
passionfruit, boneseed,
wilding pines
and sycamore.
The project’s
overall goal is
to restore the
harbour’s natural
biodiversity
Hamish
Fairbairn
while building a
resilient, engaged
community, said
CVNZ Canterbury
regional manager Hamish
Fairbairn.
With more than 90 trained volunteer
trappers, a network of 800
traps and 31 traplines, WOPP currently
protects more than 440ha
of public and private land.
Reducing pest numbers creates
space for native populations to
thrive, Fairbairn said.
harbour pest control project
The success of the Whaka Ora Pest Project in targeting invasive species around
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour has created space for native species like kererū to
recover and thrive.
PHOTOS: CCC
“As pest numbers drop, we
see increased nesting success in
native birds, more sightings of
invertebrates, and the regeneration
of native vegetation.
“In the harbour, people are
seeing larger flocks for kererū,
the return of tomtit miromiro
and increased sightings of tūī.”
WOPP covers council parks
and reserves, Department of
Conservation land, and private
land, recognising that ecological
threats can move freely across
property lines, Fairbairn said.
“We rely on the commitment
of our volunteers, and the
funding we receive from
council helps cover the costs of
essential equipment like traps,
bait and monitoring tools as
well as training, co-ordination
and safety support.”
The city council has two
funds to support community
environmental initiatives
like WOPP, both now open for
applications.
The biodiversity fund is
aimed at landowners wanting
to protect and enhance areas
of ecological significance on
private land within council
boundaries.
Parks programmes and
partnerships manager Roslyn
Kerr said this could be through
initiatives like fencing, native
planting or pest control.
“Working in partnership with
private landowners, we can
achieve outcomes that benefit
the whole city.”
The city council also offers
the environmental partnerships
fund, Kerr said.
“This is targeted at
community organisations,
charities and non-profit groups
looking to partner with our
parks rangers on projects
of shared interest to the
community and the city as a
whole.”
WOPP has received a
combined $70,000 in city
council funding from both the
biodiversity and environmental
partnership funds.
Three new water tanks are
being installed to help fight fires
in Birdlings Flat and Pigeon Bay.
Work to install two tanks in
Birdlings Flat is scheduled to
begin later this month, with
another tank to be installed in
Pigeon Bay in late November.
The communal storage tanks,
which can each hold 26,000
litres of water, are especially
important for rural communities
where limited water supply
systems can struggle to meet
demand during a fire.
“There are a few existing
tanks on the rural side of Banks
Peninsula, however we’re
installing the new tanks in areas
where FENZ highlighted they
are needed,” said city council
head of three waters Gavin
Hutchison.
“Unlike Christchurch, most
water supplies in Banks Peninsula
are fed by small streams
which are usually at their lowest
in summer when fires are more
likely,” he said.
Hutchison said the work in
Birdlings Flat is expected to take
four weeks to complete, while
the Pigeon Bay installation will
take three weeks.
“The tanks will provide great
resilience in the event of any
fire on the rural side of the
peninsula, so residents can rest
assured there will be enough
water on standby.”
Herz Jardine backs retaining
publicly-owned council assets
› From Page 1
A Cantabrian, he moved to
Victoria University in Wellington
just before the February 2011
earthquake, where he studied
history and Latin.
He moved back to Christchurch
during the Covid lockdown in
2020.
"That's the first time I really
started to feel like, this is actually
where I'm gonna make my life,
this is my home and I really want
to be part of making it a better
place.
"Politics started becoming
less of an interest and more of a
personal thing,” he said.
He became Living Wage
Movement’s Canterbury manager,
and successfully campaigned
to get the city council to pay
the living wage to staff and
contractors.
"It was really close to my heart
because I'd spent a lot of my 20s
working those sorts of minimum
wage jobs,” he said.
It showed Herz Jardine learned
how to make political change at
a local level, understand how
local government works and the
impact it can have.
He is strongly in favour of the
city council retaining its assets
like Lyttelton Port Company,
Orion and CityCare – a key part of
People’s Choice philosophy.
He also has safety concerns
around the restructure of
LPC that will remove highly
Herz Jardine followed punting tradition and jumped into the Avon River on his last
day on Sunday.
experienced foreman from the
work place.
“I really want to do everything
I can as a city councillor to make
sure that industrial relations don't
deteriorate further,” he said.
He is supportive of a union
representative being on the
Lyttelton Port Company board.
Herz Jardine, said he will
be advocating for central
government to increase the
rates rebate for people on fixed
income.
Defeated Dunlay
philosophical
about outcome
› From Page 1
“That’s going takes up a lot of
my attention early on,” Fields
said.
With a similar makeup of
councillors to the previous term,
Fields expects similar challenges
in getting projects across the line.
While Dunlay was
disappointed, he said
he appreciated the
experience.
“The results will fall
as they fall, but on that
journey, I’ve met so many
people from around Banks
Peninsula and learned so
much about this wonderful
area that we call home,”
Dunlay said.
“For me, that was the real
highlight.”
During the campaign, he
became involved with Cass
Bay residents in an initiative
to deter boy racers from local
streets – something he will keep
supporting.
The group is seeking $4300 for
a portable speed camera, which
will be placed in various locations
around the harbour to gather
evidence of anti-social driving for
Dave Dunlay
police enforcement.
Dunlay said he will continue
operating his glamping business
at French Farm and is also eyeing
a new opportunity involving his
background in media – creating
content exploring areas of Banks
Peninsula to help boost tourism.
Most members of the Banks
Peninsula Community
Board were re-elected
unopposed.
Lyn Leslie will remain
chair, Asif Hussain and
Nigel Harrison will be
members for the Akaroa
subdivision, and Cathy
Lum-Webb and Jillian
Frater will be members for
the Lyttelton subdivision.
Nigel Millar and Josie
Ogden Schroeder are the only
new members of the board,
replacing Luana Swindells and
Howard Needham who did not
seek re-election.
The Christchurch South
Environment Canterbury
constituency also has two
new councillors after Vicky
Southworth and Paul Dietsche
stepped down.
Andrea Davis and Nick Moody
were elected to the roles.
Longboard event more than just a surf contest
BY KEES CHALMERS
The Tuawera Longboard Classic
returns to Sumner Beach for its
fifth edition, starting tomorrow
and running until Sunday.
The event was originally
started in 2021 by Sumner
surfers Charlie Wise, Jack Tyro
and Will Jamieson, who wanted
to create a community-focused
surf festival.
They were inspired by the
nostalgia they shared from
attending competitions as kids.
Said Jamieson: “We just loved
the atmosphere.
“All these people, they were
there for the surfing, they
were there to hang out with
the community and that really
sparked something that we
thought was missing.”
The trio felt surfing
competitions had drifted away
from their community-based
roots and become too focused
on competitiveness.
“We just really put the
emphasis on it being a family
friendly, fun day and that
created the vibe we carry on
today,” Jamieson said.
There are currently 73
competitors registered across
six categories, though Jamieson
expects that number to rise to
between 80 and 85 by tomorrow
– roughly double the number
who competed in the first event
in 2021.
A particularly exciting
development for Jamieson is the
growing number of competitors
More than just a surfing competition, Tuawera aims to bring the community together.
in the open female category,
which is up to 15 this year – the
second largest section after
retro shortboard.
“There’s quite a lot of good
up-and-coming female surfers
coming through,” he said,
naming Lucy Macefield, Estella
Hungerford and Sumner’s
Amelie Wink among them.
Hungerford is ranked number
one in the open women’s
category for the SISA circuit
and Wink is ranked second.
In the men’s field, the
standout is defending champion
Tyro, who is once again the
favourite for the title.
PHOTOS: JONATHON SMIT NZ
He will be competing off the
back of a strong performance
at the World Surf League Bells
Beach Longboard Classic in
Victoria, finishing tied for ninth.
In the Tuawera event’s first
year, the organisers focused
solely on surfing, but since then
they’ve added other elements to
“We just really put the
emphasis on it being a
family friendly, fun day
and that created the
vibe we carry on today.”
Will Jamieson
bring the community together –
live music, food trucks, and this
year for the first time, a skate
ramp.
Alongside the surfing, the
festival will host three parties
over two nights, kicking off
with a free welcoming event
tomorrow featuring a karakia
and live music at Clink.
On Saturday, from 4-6pm,
there will be a live surfboard
shaping demonstration at the
Goat Shed surf board library at
the Sumner Hub.
Following that, from 6-10pm,
there will be live music behind
Matuku Takotako: Sumner
Centre and then an after
party at Clink running from
10pm-1am.
Jamieson said it’s a challenge
to make the event bigger and
better each year while still
keeping it affordable, but he’s
grateful for the support of the
Sumner sponsors.
“We ask a lot of the local
community and they’re very
nice to give us what they do.”
Newly-combined team
gets off to positive start
BY DIANE KEENAN
A combined Burnside Park and
Sumner team brought together
by their shared coach, Remi
Feneon, will look to maintain
their momentum this weekend
after a flying start to the
premier tennis competition.
Feneon has added Sumner’s
top players, Jack Hansen-Ratter
and Madison Aubrey, to his
established Burnside lineup this
season, and the new side made
a strong start with a win over
Te Kura Hagley at the weekend.
Finn Emslie-Robson, Liam
Adams and Hansen-Ratter all
won their singles and Feneon
combined with Hansen-Ratter
to secure the doubles.
On Saturday, they face Edgeware,
who are coming off a bye,
while Te Kura Hagley hosts Elmwood
– who impressed in their
opening clash against newcomers
Mid Canterbury.
In hot, blustery conditions,
Elmwood brothers Elliot and
Lawrence Darling produced
composed performances to
overcome younger opponents
Josh Gilbert and Ryan Watt
respectively.
Teammate Tom Batt, recently
returned from working
Burnside Park/Sumner’s Jack Hansen-Ratter picked up wins in the singles and
doubles against Te Kura Hagley.
overseas, also won convincingly,
while Mid Canterbury’s
Riley Breen earned his side’s
points with victories in both the
singles and doubles.
Mid Canterbury and Bishopdale
will both be chasing their
first wins of the season when
they meet on Bishopdale’s home
courts this weekend.
Bishopdale were well beaten
by Cashmere last week, with the
experienced Cashmere players
adapting better to the tricky
conditions.
Experience also came to the
fore in the women’s competition,
where the match of the
day featured Te Kura Hagley
veteran Michelle North-Kelsen
against Edgeware’s Nishitha
Maarka.
With the sets tied, North-
Kelsen was down 1-8 in the
deciding super tiebreak but
fought back superbly to take it
11-9.
Te Kura Hagley won the tie
4-2 and will face Waimairi this
week.
Cashmere hosts Bishopdale
– who lost to Elmwood by five
games on a countback – while
Edgeware will be at home
again, taking on Elmwood on
Saturday.
Peninsula plot comeback, Heathcote keep rolling
BY KEES CHALMERS
Peninsula Harbour will be
aiming to bounce back after a
six-wicket loss to Pleasant Point
in their opening game of the
Country premier season.
They now prepare to take on
Cheviot at Rhodes Park Domain
at 12.30pm on Saturday.
Despite the loss, Peninsula
captain David Neal is confident
his side can rebound this
weekend with a few tweaks.
The focus will be on fielding,
after several dropped catches
proved costly in last weekend’s
defeat.
“Our fielding let us down and
they made us pay for it,” he said.
Peninsula batted first and,
despite a shaky start with ducks
for openers Ben Aveyard and
Chester Oldfield, managed a
competitive total of 239/5.
That was largely thanks to
a starring performance from
Tim Petrie, batting at three,
who scored 129 not out off 136
deliveries. New recruit Jackson
Hodgkinson provided support
with 43 off 81.
Peninsula started well with the
ball, reducing Pleasant Point to
6/2, before half-centuries from
Lachie Munro (63) and Matthew
Brown (91)
guided the
hosts home
with 4.3 overs
remaining.
Petrie is
unavailable
this week due
to Canterbury
Country
Tyler Lortan
commitments
and will make way for returning
player-coach Tim Gruijters.
Meanwhile, Heathcote began
their Metro premier two-day
campaign with a dominant
victory over defending
champions Lancaster Park.
They now face East Shirley
away at Burwood Park on
Saturday from 10.30am.
“We're looking forward to it,
we’ve had some good success
in the recent past against East
Shirley,” said player-coach Tyler
Lortan.
“I know they're going to come
out hard, but we are pretty confident
about going over there and
competing really well.”
He said the keys will be consistency
and keeping things simple.
The win over Lancaster Park
was built on a tight bowling
display, which saw the opposition
bowled out for 109.
“We were really disciplined up
top, we put on a lot of pressure
and we were creating chances
through pressure, then wickets
started to happen on a regular
basis after that,” Lortan said.
Otago Volts recruit Travis
Muller was economical in his 10
overs, taking 1-17.
Youngster Oscar Anderson took
2-30 from six overs, while Marek
Bungard and Phillipe Boissevain
claimed three wickets each.
Heathcote’s chase started well,
but a middle order collapse saw
them struggling at 73/6, before
Lortan’s 27 not out and Muller’s
unbeaten 19 saw them home.
LORELEI JENNER
Art Auction Marks 20 Years of
Fundraising for Lyttelton’s Children
The much-loved Peninsula Art
Auction returns this November
celebrating 20 years as one
of Lyttelton’s most enduring
and successful community
fundraisers.
Run biennially, the auction has
become a cornerstone of local
culture, celebrating the work of
artists with links to the Banks
Peninsula while raising an
estimated $500,000 for Lyttelton
tamariki since its inception.
The Peninsula Art Auction began
in 2003 as a grassroots fundraiser
sparked by the local school
community, supported early on
by Lyttelton Main School parents.
Celebrated artist Bill Hammond
donated the first artwork, and the
event quickly gained momentum
and became a much-loved fixture
on the calendar.
By 2005, it had evolved into a
collaborative effort involving all
three local schools at the time –
Lyttelton Main, Lyttelton West,
and St Joseph’s – and to support
this ongoing relationship, a
charitable trust was established to
coordinate fundraising efforts for
the children of Lyttelton.
Originally staged at Holy Trinity
Church in Lyttelton, the auction
was forced to adapt following
the Christchurch earthquakes,
The auction was first held in the
Holy Trinity church, and moved after the earthquakes.
“We’re so proud that two decades on,
it’s still going strong, and still something
we all look forward to. We have an
amazing community”
Caro Davidson, one of the founding organisers
relocating to several unusual
venues including the basement
of the local supermarket and
The Loons theatre. Apart from a
missed year in 2020 due to the
Covid-19 pandemic, the event has
continued to thrive.
For the past decade, the event
has found a home at Lyttelton
Primary School, where the entire
top floor is transformed into a
contemporary pop-up gallery.
“The Auction is about more than
raising money,” says Jenny Felton,
Principal of Lyttelton Primary.
“It represents the creativity,
resilience, and community spirit
that make Lyttelton special. We’re
incredibly grateful to the artists,
volunteers, and families who have
kept this tradition alive for over
20 years.”
This year’s auction will feature two
original sketches by Bill Hammond
going under the hammer: an Untitled
sketch from his 2011 Cornwall Rd Series
(above), and Untitled (2008), featured on
the front cover.
Bill Hammond’s
Enduring Gift
Often described as New Zealand’s
greatest contemporary painter, Lyttelton
legend Bill Hammond was not only
a visionary artist but also a generous
benefactor of local education.
Despite his private nature, Bill
was always willing to contribute,
donating a stunning original
work to the Peninsula Art Auction
every event.
His creativity and generosity have
left a lasting legacy in the
classrooms of Lyttelton Main,
Lyttelton West, St Josephs, and now
Lyttelton Primary, where generations of
children have been inspired by his art
and example.
The Lyttelton Education Charitable
Trust remains deeply grateful to
both Bill and his widow, Jane, for their
decades of unwavering support.

Art Week Sparks Young Imaginations
Leading up to this year’s
Peninsula Art Auction, the
school hosted Art Week, a
much-anticipated programme
where local artists step into
classrooms to run workshops,
give talks, and share their
creative practices.
Fourteen artists participated
this year. Workshops
ranged from cardboard
constructions and sewing
collages, to experimental
wood printing and helping
design a mural for the
Lyttelton Community Garden.
“It’s a reflection of what
makes Lyttelton special—
a community that comes
together to support children
through creativity”
Jenny Felton, Principal
Lyttelton Primary
Above: Workshops included marbling
with Eve Simmance, rock mandalas with
Madhu Rees, jewellery making with
Angus Goodwin, and an introduction to
composition workshop with Governors Bay
artists Mark Soltero and Kim Hennessy.
Fresh ideas, full flavours
Fresh focaccia, a zesty dip and
bright pea salad makes a vibrant
spring lunch, writes Nigel Slater
HERB FOCACCIA WITH GREEN
OLIVE, BURNT LEMON AND
THYME DIP
If you happen to have a
jar of sourdough starter in
the fridge, add a couple of
tablespoons when you add the
yeast. Grilling the lemon gives
the juice a more mellow, lightly
toasted flavour.
Ingredients
Serves 2-4
For the focaccia
400ml warm water
2 tsp easy-baked dried yeast
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp caster sugar
500g strong white bread flour
6 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp thyme leaves
sea salt flakes
You will also need a high-sided
baking tin, about 24x24cm
For the dip
1 large lemon
250g stoned green olives
1 Tbsp thyme leaves
6 Tbsp olive oil

Method
• Put the water and yeast into
a large mixing bowl and add the
salt and sugar. If you are adding
sourdough starter, do so now.
• Mix in the flour by hand or
with a spatula. Add 2 Tbsp of
the olive oil and mix into the
dough. Cover the bowl with
a tea towel and refrigerate
overnight (I like to give the
dough a good eight hours).
• Next day, when the dough
has risen to about twice its
original size, chop the thyme
leaves and add them into the
dough along with another
2Tbsp of the oil.
• Lightly oil the baking tin
and turn the dough out into
it. Push the dough to fit the tin
with your fist, gently pushing it
almost into the corners.
• Wrap the tin in a cloth and
place in a warm spot for about
an hour until it has risen to
twice its size. Set the oven to
220degC. When the oven is
ready, push 12 or so hollows
into the dough with your finger,
scatter the surface with sea salt
and bake for 30 minutes until
golden. Remove from the oven
and pour the remaining oil
over.
• For the dip: Get a small
griddle pan hot. Cut the lemon
in half and place cut side down
on the griddle. Leave until the
underside is toasted, even a
little blackened, then remove
and squeeze the juice.
• Put the olives in a food
processor with the thyme
leaves, and process until finely
chopped.
• Pour in the olive oil then,
finally, 4 Tbsp of lemon juice.
Check the seasoning — you may
need a little black pepper. Serve
with the warm focaccia.
PEA SALAD WITH RICOTTA
AND LEMON
A soft, sharp and creamy salad
with the crunch of peas and
crisp, raw radishes.
Ingredients
Serves 3 as a light salad
For the ricotta
2 cloves young garlic
250g ricotta
4 Tbsp natural yoghurt
1 tsp finely grated lemon zest
For the salad
200g peas, podded weight
2 handfuls (about 150g) peas in
their pod (or mangetout)
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 large handfuls pea shoots
2 Tbsp pine kernels
6 radishes, halved
For the mint oil
12-15 mint leaves
75ml olive oil
Method
• Peel the garlic and crush to a
paste with a tiny pinch of salt. I
use a small pestle and mortar for
this, but the flat blade of a knife
or the back of a spoon will do.
• Mix together the ricotta and
yoghurt to give a loose paste,
then stir in the garlic and the
finely grated lemon zest. Add
a little coarsely ground black
pepper.
• Have a bowl of iced water to
hand. Bring a deep pan of water
to the boil, salt it lightly, add
both lots of peas and cook for 3-4
minutes, then drain and plunge
into iced water. This stops them
cooking and keeps their colour
bright.
• Drain and shake them dry
(you could use a salad spinner).
Toss the peas in the olive oil.
• In a dry pan, toast the pine
kernels until pale gold in colour.
Keep them moving round the
pan so they colour evenly, and
keep an eye on them, as they are
easy to burn.
• Blitz the mint leaves and
olive oil in a food processor or
blender, adjusting to a pouring
consistency with a little water.
Season lightly with salt.
• Put the ricotta dip on a
serving dish, add the peas, pea
shoots and radishes. Scatter with
the toasted pine kernels and
trickle the mint oil over.
Plans under way for
2026 Community
Awards Programme
The Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation’s Community Awards
Programme is an annual event
that provides a range of awards
for community clubs, groups and
organisations that reside within
the foundation’s catchment area –
from Taylors Mistake through to
Mt Pleasant, around to Heathcote
and across to Brookhaven.
The five awards were originally
offered in 2024 to celebrate
the foundation’s 30 years of service
to the local community. The
response was so successful, the
trustees made it an annual event.
“To continue to offer the Community
Awards Programme we
will need to find sponsors” said
foundation chair Martin Hawes.
“We have had wonderful support
from local individuals and
businesses who have sponsored
our Scholarships & Awards Programme
for individuals, enabling
us to off a range of scholarships
and awards each year.
“We would like to replicate this
with the Community Awards Programme
too, and would love to
hear from anyone who could help
us help our local community.”
The recipients of last year’s
awards were:
• $10,000 Major Award:
Sumner Community Pool
• $5000 Environment
Award: Sumner Community
Residents Association
• $5000 Sports Award:
Heathcote Cricket Club
• $5000 Arts & Culture Award:
Sumner Silver Band
• $5000 Education Award:
Kahukura Charitable Trust
“There is a consistent theme
amongst the winners from 2025,”
said trustee Andrew Clark, who
led the Community Awards selection
panel.
“It’s not just the club or
organisation that benefits from
the award, but the broader
community does too.
“Be it a pool the community can
use, improved cricket grounds
all can use, music at community
events, a cleaner, greener
environment. . . We’re fortunate
to live in a community with so
many resources we can tap in to.”
• Application forms for the 2026
Community Awards Programme, along
with the individual academic and
Outward Bound scholarships plus the
Apprentice Award, will be available at
sumnerferrymeadfoundation.co.nz from
early January
Te Aratai College:
How We Celebrate Our Diverse Cultures and Community
At Te Aratai College we have four uara-values that we
use to inform what is important in the teaching and
learning that occurs in our space.
The uara that we hold dear and celebrate are:
Manaakitanga, Whanaungatanga, Rangatiratanga and
Tūrangawaewae. They embody our way of being and
we encourage and practise our uara in everything we
do, from our school philosophy through to our teaching
spaces, curriculum and relationships. As we near the end
of the school year, we would like to recognize some of
our senior leaders who have embodied and championed
our ngā uara.
We start with Tūrangawaewae as the basis of our
learning. When a student feels a sense of belonging, they
can then begin to build on the other uara. In our tohulogo
we see Tūrangawaewae in the base, the waka we
share and navigate together.
Year 13 student Maddi Scott has exemplified the value
of Tūrangawaewae in her compassion and deep sense
of purpose. Her business venture, The Purple Project
(advocate and fundraising for mental health), was
recently named the Canterbury Ōtākaro South Regional
Winner for Challenge 3: Promotion and Sales, in the
Young Enterprise Scheme. This achievement reflects
Maddi’s entrepreneurial tenacity, and commitment to the
wellbeing of others. Maddi’s appearance on Seven Sharp
about her project, poignantly underscored the strength
of her convictions. Through The Purple Project, she has
shown what it means to stand proudly in one’s place, the
essence of Tūrangawaewae, and enriching it to make a
positive difference in the lives of others.
Maddie with her L3
Business Kaiako,
Manaakitanga and Whanaungatanga are symbolized
in our logo as the awa-rivers, representing the
Ōtākaro and Ōpāwaho rivers, either side of the
central maunga-mountain. Manaakitanga is the
process of showing respect, generosity and care for
others. Whanaungatanga is the bond through shared
experiences, providing people with a sense of belonging.
Ākonga who epitomise these uara are at the heart of
what makes a community.
Year 13 Service Kahui Prefect Smriti Parajuli exemplifies
the value of Whanaungatanga through her commitment
to fostering connection, belonging, and service within
our school and wider community. As an integral member
of the committee that organised this year’s Festival of
Nations, Smriti helped bring together students, whānau,
and community to celebrate the diverse cultures that
enrich Te Aratai College. Her leadership and teamwork
reflected the spirit of unity and mutual respect that
Whanaungatanga embodies. Beyond this, Smriti has
twice received the Te Aratai College Community
Service Award and has been an active member of the
Acts of Kindness Collective (AKC), a group dedicated
to community service projects such as caring for
the school environment and visiting residents at Aldwins
House retirement home. Her warmth and empathy
have strengthened connections across generations
and cultures. We are immensely proud to congratulate
Smriti on recently being awarded the prestigious Milford
Foundation Scholarship for 2026—one of only
fifteen students selected nationwide. This scholarship,
which provides financial support, mentoring, and
internship opportunities, is a well-deserved recognition
of her excellence and encouraging whanaungatanga.
Smriti outside the
kura
Fatemah Ahmadi is a prefect who exemplifies the Te
Aratai College value of Manaakitanga through her
commitment to supporting and uplifting others while
pursuing personal growth. She dedicated four days of
her Term 2 holidays to participate in Young Enterprise’s
annual ‘Entrepreneurs in Action’ Weekend, an intense,
fast-paced program where students collaborate
with peers they have just met to tackle back-to-back
business challenges. Fatemah’s willingness to
engage wholeheartedly in this immersive experience
demonstrates her respect for the efforts and ideas of
others, as well as her readiness to contribute positively
to a team under pressure. Beyond entrepreneurship,
Fatemah has also supported and represented
her school through creative expression, being an active
member of the Te Aratai College spoken word team
at WORD: The Front Line Ōtautahi Grand Slam, and
Rangatiratanga is our final uara. Rangatiratanga is
associated with sovereignty but extends to leadership,
autonomy, and self-determination. In our tohu-logo we
recognize the central maunga-mountain as Pae Maunga
- Kā Tiritiri o Te Moana, the Southern Alps. The line in
the middle represents the pathway our students take on
their journey; their self-actualisation, the lofty mountain
to which they strive and aspire.
Māori Kahui Prefect Rangitohiora Paringatai-Dallas
has encapsulated the value of Rangatiratanga through
his exceptional self-determination and commitment
to excellence. His recognition as the Kaitātaki Tane
o te Rohe o Waitaha and the presentation of the
Kaitātaki Tane taonga from Te Pā o Rākaihautū
mark a momentous occasion for Te Aratai
College and our community. This prestigious
taonga, awarded to the outstanding male leader
in Kapa Haka across Waitaha, acknowledges
Rangitohiora’s dedication, discipline, and passion
for te ao Māori. His accomplishment epitomises the
essence of Rangatiratanga, believing in oneself,
upholding personal and collective mana, and taking
responsibility for one’s learning and growth.
Rangitohiora at the
Waitaha Secondary
School Haka
Competitions
Charlotte Williams, one of our Head Students, is
another fine example of Rangatiratanga in her pursuit
of excellence on the world stage. Representing
Te Aratai College and New Zealand at the 2025
World 8-Ball Pool Championships in Ennis, Ireland,
Charlotte demonstrated not only skill and discipline
in her sport but also the courage to step into a global
arena and lead by example. Her dedication inspires
her peers to strive for their own goals, showing
that true leadership is about setting a standard and
embracing responsibility. By competing at the highest
level while proudly carrying her school’s reputation,
Charlotte embodies the essence of Rangatiratanga:
principled dedication that uplifts both herself and
her community.
Charlotte at the 2025
World 8-Ball Pool
Championships
This is only a small selection of the accomplishments
of our Student Leadership Team, and the entirety
of the Y13 seniors. There has been so much to
celebrate and so much more to come. We are
delighted and proud of all that our uara contribute to
our learners’ positive pathways.
Kia’s EV5 pairs
bold design
with everyday
practicality
Rating out of 10: Performance 7, Handling 7, Build Quality 8, Comfort 7, Space 8, Styling 7, Value for money 7,
Safety 5-star ANCAP rating
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
Kia’s all-electric family has
expanded again, this time with
the arrival of the distinctivelooking
EV5, a model that’s big
on style, practicality, and value
for money, priced from $67,990.
This all-new model follows the
lead of its larger sibling, the EV9
wagon, which launched in 2024.
The compact EV5 benefits
from a local tuning and
engineering program to better
suit New Zealand’s challenging
roads, terrain, and weather
conditions.
Both the EV5 and the recently
launched and much-hyped EV3
share the bold design language
of the EV9.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The EV5’s styling, however,
has proven to be somewhat
polarising, based on the level of
unsolicited feedback I received
from people keen to share their
opinions.
Reactions were mixed, and
Kia will be hoping the look
stands the test of time – no
small feat in an industry
where design trends can shift
overnight.
The five-model range starts
with the Light ($67,995) and
tops out with the GT-Line
($85,450).
Two different drivetrains are
available, depending on the
variant. The Light and Light+
are front-wheel drive only,
while the mid-spec Earth adds
an all-wheel-drive option.
The GT-Line sits at the top,
loaded with luxury features
such as a panoramic sunroof,
a premium relaxation driver’s
seat with massage function, and
an eight-speaker sound system.
It even includes a console
box with heating and cooling
functions.
The $70,450 Light+ provided
for this road test hits the valuefor-money
sweet spot in the
lineup, offering plenty of kit
and the best bang for your Kia
EV buck.
A five-year/150,000km
factory warranty is standard –
not the most generous on the
market these days, with some
Chinese brands now offering
10-year coverage – while
the battery is backed by an
eight-year/160,000km warranty.
A new-generation battery
delivers a claimed range of
443km for the Light, which
increases to 492km in the
Earth.
In real-world driving, expect
about 25-30% less than these
figures. Range depends heavily
on driving style, terrain, and
load. Also hills, in particular,
are no friend of EVs.
The EV5 helps offset this
with an effective brake energy
recovery system, which
captures energy during braking
and feeds it back into the
battery.
All EV5s use the same 88kWh
battery, paired with either a
single or dual electric motor
setup – the latter exclusive to
the high-end GT-Line.
The single-motor version
produces 160kW and 310Nm,
which isn’t headline-grabbing
but provides enthusiastic
performance around town and
confident acceleration on the
open road.
Throttle response feels
sharper than the modest
0-100km/h time of 8.9 seconds
suggests, while the singlespeed
automatic transmission
operates smoothly in the
background.
Inside, the EV5 offers a
spacious, practical cabin, with
up to 1714-litres of load space
(rear seats folded) and an
additional 67l in the front boot.
Adjustable cargo hooks keep
bags from tipping over, and
up front there’s a panoramic
29-inch integrated display,
made up of a 12.3-inch digital
instrument cluster and a 12.3-
inch multimedia system.
The graphics will change
according to the selected drive
mode – Normal, Sport, Eco, or
Snow.
The EV5 is also the first Kia
to feature Kia Connect, an app
that turns your smartphone into
a remote control for the car. It
allows remote locking, climate
control, and even real-time
vehicle tracking. In the event of
a crash that triggers the airbags,
Kia Connect automatically
contacts a 24/7 call centre.
Another first is the inclusion
of over-the-air (OTA) updates,
which enhance key vehicle
systems such as the powertrain,
battery management, and
driver-assistance features.
Android Auto and Apple
CarPlay are standard across the
range.
Kia has also packed in
a comprehensive suite of
advanced driver-assistance
systems, including forward
collision avoidance assist, smart
cruise control, lane follow assist,
and lane keep assist.
With MacPherson struts at the
front and five-link suspension
at the rear, the EV5 delivers a
composed and comfortable ride,
soaking up patchy and potholed
surfaces with ease.
The steering is responsive and
well-weighted, rounding out a
chassis that feels more refined
than expected for a vehicle not
built on a dedicated EV platform.
The EV5 shares the same
platform as the Kia Sportage
that runs petrol engines, and
hybrid power trains. Against
this background it makes
the transition to life as a
fully-fledged electric vehicle
exceptionally well.
