Tony and Monster winging it
until pets allowed onboard
BY DYLAN SMITS
Tony Church is legally blind
and almost every day he takes
2-year-old budgie Monster on
the bus.
But there is a problem.
Monster is technically a
stowaway until Environment
Canterbury’s new policy
allowing pets on buses comes
into force.
ECan still cannot say when
the policy will be implemented
after it was approved in July.
Although almost all bus
drivers let the duo on board,
Church is frustrated and feels
like he is being forced to break
the rules.
“I can’t believe ECan is
dragging this out so much. I
think it should be a simple
change. Auckland and
Wellington let pets on, I don’t
get why they can’t just copy
those policies,” he said.
Church’s frustration was
amplified on October 6 when
a Bus Interchange security
guard tried to stop him from
boarding with Monster.
“I nearly had the police
called on me but I just jumped
on the bus anyway and left. I
said there was the new policy
coming in letting pets on buses
but she (the security guard)
just kept saying that wasn’t
valid yet.”
The situation did not
escalate further, but Church
was reminded of how
important it was for ECan to
officially allow pets on buses
as soon as possible.
ECan public transport
general manager Stewart
Gibbon could not say when
the new rules would be fully
implemented.
“Our staff have been
working with Christchurch
City Council, operators and
stakeholders on determining
how the new conditions are
applied.”
What’s in
store for
the city’s
assets?
The local body election results
have delivered the same mayor
and a nearly identical set of city
councillors.
But Mayor Phil Mauger is still
short of a working majority of
like-minded city councillors.
On pages 8 and 9, reporter
Dylan Smits examines what
this means for the future of
the city’s six most important
ratepayer-owned companies
– Lyttelton Port Company,
Christchurch Airport, Orion,
Enable, CityCare and
EcoCentral.
The left-leaning bloc of city
councillors has retained its
eight votes, while the rightleaning
bloc, including Mauger,
again has seven.
Tim Scandrett (Cashmere
Ward) and Andrei Moore
(Halswell) still sit in the middle.
There is little appetite from the
left, or Moore and Scandrett,
to partially or fully sell the
companies.
With Mauger also giving a
firm campaign committment
to not selling Lyttelton Port
Company, the airport or
Orion, it appears those three
companies will stay in public
hands this city council term.
However, Mauger made no
promises regarding Enable,
CityCare and EcoCentral.
Alleged killer keeps name suppressed for now
BY SAM SHERWOOD
A man charged with murdering
a woman will keep his name
secret for now and is yet to
enter a plea while his counsel
reviews a psychiatric report.
Emergency services were
called to a property on Lamorna
Rd, Parklands, at 7.50pm
on July 23 after reports a
woman had sustained critical
injuries.
Detective Senior Sergeant
Karen Simmons earlier said
the woman was unresponsive
when emergency services
arrived and tragically was unable
to be revived.
A 36-year-old man, charged
with murdering the woman,
appeared in the High Court at
Christchurch on Friday before
Justice Jonathan Eaton.
Justice Eaton said the man's
lawyer Philip Shamy KC had
received a psychiatric report
and required further time to
review it.
Once the report had been
reviewed the man would be in
a position to enter a plea to the
charge.
The man was remanded in
custody to appear again on
November 13.
An interim order for name
suppression for the defendant
and the woman was continued.
Murder accused
says shooting
was self defence
BY AL WILLIAMS
A night out at a music festival
turned fatal when a man was
shot dead in a suburban street.
David Bridgwater had been
partying with others at the
Juicy Festival at QEII Park and
continued into the early hours
when things took a turn for the
worse.
It was the morning of January
4, 2024 when the 38-year-old
was found on Carisbrooke St,
Aranui, lying beside his car,
which was still running.
James Arthur Holder, 55, is on
trial for Bridgwater’s murder,
before a jury in the High Court
at Christchurch. The trial,
which opened on Monday, is
expected to last five weeks.
Holder does not deny shooting
Bridgwater but claims it
was in self-defence.
The Crown alleges Holder had
intent when he shot Bridgwater
in the abdomen. In her opening
address, prosecutor Penny
Brown said the pair were not
known to each other but had
been in each other’s company
that night.
They had ended up at a Carisbrooke
St address with others
when an argument ensued.
Brown said Bridgwater
walked out of the property and
was followed by Holder who
shot him in the street.
It was accepted that Bridgwater
was shot with a .22 calibre
gun that was never recovered.
Brown said the trial would
focus on how and why Bridgwater
received the fatal injury.
She said Bridgwater had been
with a couple of women and
had been described by a witness
as behaving in an obnoxious
manner at the address.
He had been asked to leave
the address a number of times.
Brown said he was being “a
bit of a smart guy” when Holder
“piped up” and told him to
leave.
He got into his car and
started the engine when Holder
followed him out and an altercation
ensued.
Bridgwater was shot about
2.15am.
Holder then allegedly left the
address in his car, drove to an
associate’s home and then the
red zone, where Brown said he
disposed of the gun.
Police found a spent .22 cartridge
beside Bridgwater’s body.
First responders unsuccessfully
tried to revive Bridgwater
James Arthur Holder is accused of murdering David Bridgwater (inset) in Aranui
on January 4, 2024. He is on trial in the High Court at Christchurch.
who was pronounced dead
about 2.43am.
A number of items that had
been burned were recovered
from the Carisbrooke St
property when a search
warrant was executed a couple
of days later.
Police intercepted Holder’s
phone calls in the following
weeks, and he was arrested and
charged on February 2, 2024.
Defence lawyer John Wayne
Howell told the jury the trial
would be about self-defence.
He said Bridgwater was under
the influence of drugs and
alcohol, and that he was being
“disrespectful, belligerent and
dangerous”.
“What was the altercation
prior to him being shot, did the
circumstances justify Mr Holder
acting in self-defence?
“When Mr Holder fired that
shot, he was acting in selfdefence;
they had not met each
other prior to that.
“What happened in those few
minutes will come from the
defence, keep an open mind,
there is more to the story than
the Crown evidence.”
The trial is being heard by
Justice Lisa Preston.
The Crown is expected to call
51 witnesses.
No set date when new pets
on buses policy will start
Hospital’s specialist
IV team dropped
› From Page 1
An implementation date and
specific rules for pet owners
will be announced when ready,”
Gibbon said.
Church named his budgie
Monster after Pixar’s Monsters,
Inc character Roz, due to the
similar spiky tuft on their heads
when the budgie was a baby.
But Church says his monster
has a much sunnier disposition
than cranky Roz.
“Children love to see him on
the bus. They come over and
have a look or take a photo. It’s
a great feeling.”
Church likes to take Monster
with him when he goes about
his day, whether shopping or
visiting friends.
Church first contacted ECan
about the pets on buses policy
two years ago when a driver did
not allow him and his previous
budgie, Senna, on board.
Senna was named after famed
Formula 1 champion driver
Ayrton Senna as Church has a
love for the sport.
It was the only time until
recently he had faced issues
bringing a budgie onboard.
He made inquiries to ECan
about their policy and was told
caged budgies were not permitted
on buses.
He stopped riding the bus
with his budgie for six months
and took a taxi most places.
After he bought Monster
about a year ago, he decided to
try the bus again.
“I found the bus drivers really
didn’t care,” he said.
The new rules when in force
will allow small dogs on buses
during off-peak hours between
9am to 3pm and after 6pm
provided they are leashed and
muzzled.
Large dogs and other pets,
such as budgies will also be
allowed in off-peak hours
if they are kept in enclosed
containers.
Auckland and Wellington
both have policies
allowing small pets on buses in
enclosures.
Church says Monster is no
bother to other passengers.
like birds do. Especially when
I’ve got the motorsport on. He’ll
A pilot programme at
Christchurch Hospital, which
created a specialist intravenous
team for patients, has been
dropped despite positive results
and financial savings.
The Vessel Health
Preservation and Intravenous
Access team – known as VIVA
– were specialists at getting IV
access in patients whose veins
were not easy to find.
Those patients are described
as Difficult Intravenous Access
or DIVA.
International studies have
shown that more than a third of
adults and up to half of children
presenting to hospital met DIVA
criteria, which is characterised
by non-visible and non-palpable
veins.
The VIVA team was made
up of a part-time associate
charge nurse manager and
approximately three fulltime
equivalent positions for
registered nurses.
The aim of the VIVA team was
to make use of the nurses' high
level of inserter knowledge,
experience and procedural
competence, and vein location
technology – such as ultrasound
– to assess vessels and guide
insertion, they could place a
peripheral intravenous catheter
successfully on the first
attempt.
The pilot ran from April 2024
to July 2025 and an impact
report was completed near the
end of the project to measure
outcomes.
The impact report showed
that, because of fewer failed
PIVC insertions and fewer
premature failures of PIVCs,
there was a reduction in annual
expenditure of $308,003 on
PIVC and associated equipment.
There was also a reduction
in healthcare-associated
bloodstream infections (HABSI),
but the report said this could
have been connected to other
changes.
The number of HABSI's over
the period dropped by 21%,
compared to the previous year,
dropping from 72 to 57 cases.
Restorative justice brought closure for
BY AL WILLIAMS
The father of 19-year-old
restorative justice “profoundly
wanting to talk to
the company the
driver worked for
about his daughter’s
death.
“I assumed that
the driver was
at fault and that
they would likely
be going through
some kind of
hell,” said Dawson.
Richard
Dawson
“My thoughts turned to the
possibility of restorative justice;
it turned out that the driver was
not at fault.”
Fyfa Dawson was hit by the
truck which turned left in front
of her at a temporary traffic
management site on Springs Rd,
near Halswell Junction Rd. She
had been cycling from Prebbleton
to her hairdressing course
in the city.
She was killed instantly.
The truck driver was never
charged as a subsequent
Fyfa Dawson was killed instantly after a concrete truck turned left in front of her at
a temporary traffic management site on Springs Rd in 2019.
WorkSafe investigation alleged
Downer New Zealand and
McConnell Dowell failed to
ensure the health and safety of
members of the public as a safe
and effective temporary traffic
management system wasn’t in
place.
WorkSafe laid charges against
both construction companies.
However, as an alternative
to prosecution Downer New
Zealand and McConnell Dowell
agreed to contribute almost
$1.7m to safety work.
The commitment included
contributing towards new studies,
qualifications, guidelines
and virtual reality training for
safer roadworks, and running
cyclist awareness programmes
for roadworkers.
For Dawson, that meant there
was no court process.
“The mechanics of that
path meant that there was no
automatic offering of a restorative
justice meeting (with the
companies), so I actively sought
it out.”
Dawson reached out to a
workplace justice organisation
which facilitated a restorative
justice meeting with himself,
McConnell Dowell Constructors
and Downer New Zealand.
He met with the two companies
involved to discuss the
incident and its impact on him.
“This seemed to me to be a
better option than a court case.”
Coroner Ruth Thomas
recently released her findings
into his daughter’s death, calling
for changes to temporary
traffic management and the
operation of heavy vehicles in
the hope of preventing similar
tragedies.
“While restorative justice
may not be for everyone, and
while my experience of it will
not be exactly the same as
another person’s, I do believe
that it could be valuable if this
hearing-centred institution is
more widely appreciated and
understood as a possible healing
journey.”
The meeting regarding his
daughter’s death met his hopes
for restorative justice.
He said there were four representatives
from the companies
involved, while he had several
people supporting him.
“There was something profoundly
therapeutic about this
for me. At the end, I was given
a taonga, fashioned from the
kawakawa pounamu, known
for its healing properties. I was
told that the circular shape
represents continuity and an
eternal connection. The koru
patterns within the circle signify
growth and peace. I have
found the gift to be deeply moving
and symbolic. I felt a kind of
closure take place.”
Dawson said his interest in
restorative justice began years
before his daughter’s death
when he was undertaking a law
doctorate in justice.
“I was most interested in the
possibilities of the legal hearing
more broadly, and in the
old justice principle, ‘Hear the
other side’.
“Something of an ideal
restorative justice meeting
unfolds in a circle where all
voices can be heard; those who
have suffered are given the space
to ask questions and to speak
their truth without interruption,
with their pain received with
respect and compassion.”
More early
detection
sensors to
be installed
A network of environmental
sensors is expanding to more
sites around Christchurch and
at Little River.
The city council already has 15
sensors across Bottle Lake Forest,
Naval Point and the
Port Hills that use smart technology
to help with early fire
detection. Twelve new sensors
are being added in public
spaces, such as suburban parks
and reserves along the Ōpāwaho
Heathcote and Ōtākaro Avon rivers,
and at Little River, as part of
a three-year trial.
Smart Christchurch manager
Grace de Leon said the sensors
will provide localised real-time
data about weather conditions,
flood monitoring and visual
imaging.
“This data will be available
to council staff and emergency
services, such as Fire and
Emergency New Zealand to help
them respond effectively to
emergency situations, manage
community safety and issue
timely public warnings.”
Two of the sensors are being
located specifically to help with
flood monitoring on rivers.
“The sensors will allow us to
monitor water levels via visual
imaging,” de Leon said.
The sensors are expected to
be installed by November.
New approach credited for drop in ram raids
BY DYLAN SMITS
Ram raids dominated headlines
and fuelled public outrage at
their peak in 2022 and 2023 –
but what has caused the sharp
decline since then?
In Canterbury, there were 59
fewer ram raids in 2024 than in
2023 – dropping from 84 to 25 –
and only seven so far this year,
up to September.
A large spike in the number
of ram raids in
Canterbury first
happened in 2022,
jumping to 50
from 16 in 2021,
just two in 2020
and 17 raids in
2019.
Nationwide, ram
raids surged to 410
in 2021, peaking at
714 in 2022 before
falling to 496 in 2023, 210 in
Lane Todd
2024, and 69 so far this year, up
to September.
Canterbury metro
commander Superintendent
Lane Todd said police have
“put a great deal of effort into
preventing ram raids and
holding offenders to account”.
The spike in offending, and
the youth of many offenders,
sparked major public concern
and became a key talking point
leading up to the 2023 general
election.
Before its election win, the
National Party accused the
Labour Government of being
soft on crime and not doing
enough to stop ram raids.
Dairy and Business Owners
Sue’s Takeaway and Convenience Store in Yaldhurst suffered a ram raid in September 2022.
Group chair
Ankit Bansal
credits the sharp
decline to a new
policing approach
introduced after
the change of
government in
2023.
“The credit Ankit Bansal
should go to the
Government, the police and
those at the Ministry of Justice
who worked on this issue when
it was at its peak,” Bansal said.
“Potential ram raiders know
that they will likely be caught.
This is the single biggest
deterrent for criminals and
relies on the police aggressively
pursuing ram raiders.”
Todd said when ram raids
were at their worst, police
districts established specialist
teams and operations focused
on ram raids and aggravated
robberies.
“For a time, ram raids were
very visible and disruptive in
our communities and to the
businesses we want to see
thrive.”
Police also manage the Retail
Crime Prevention Programme,
launched in November 2022,
which supports small retailers
who have been victims of ram
raids or aggravated robberies.
The programme funds security
interventions such as CCTV,
bollards and fog cannons to help
prevent further offending.
The introduction of police
beat teams in July last year has
also played a significant role
in reducing the number of ram
raids, Todd said.
“Having a highly visible
police presence helps to deter
offending and it means police
are also on hand for response.”
He said several police districts
in larger centres have also
established dedicated youthtargeting
teams.
The new teams focus on highrisk
youth offenders and help to
apprehend them quickly.
“We are also trialling a
programme to reform youth
offenders at an early stage and
this is also having a positive
impact,” Todd said.
Night market to move again after
more unfair competition claims
BY DYLAN SMITS
The Christchurch Night Market
will relocate for a second time
due to complaints from nearby
food outlets about unfair
competition.
The market, which has been
operating from the The Hub
Hornby’s car park roof,
will shift to the Waterloo
Business Park in Islington on
November 6.
It is about a 5min drive from
The Hub.
A market spokesperson
said there won’t be a pause in
the Thursday night market’s
calendar.
The mall made the decision
not to renew the market’s lease
after a “successful” three-year
partnership due to concerns
of unfair competition with the
mall’s food outlets, the spokesperson
said.
Sal’s Pizza The Hub co-owner
Jatin Patel said the mall’s food
retailers wanted the market
moved due to the stall vendors
being able to charge cheaper
prices.
“It’s a bit difficult in that way.
Our rent keeps getting higher,
and other costs, and the market
people can just charge less.”
Thursday night is important
for business at The Hub as
most food outlets are open
late, but Patel said the market
running at the same time
The Christchurch Night Market will relocate from The Hub Hornby to the Waterloo Business Park, after the mall’s food outlets
complained about unfair competition.
means fewer customers.
“The night market ends up
with a heavy chunk of the customers,”
he said.
Patel had not heard the market
was being relocated until
speaking with The Star.
“It’s good to hear they have a
new place,” he said.
The night market previously
operated out of the Bush Inn
Centre between 2021 and 2022.
The spokesperson said it had
moved from that site due to
issues related to competition
and limited parking.
Finding another location in
Hornby had its challenges.
“The Hornby community,
who have embraced the Thursday
markets, are facing a real
loss. That’s why it was important
to all parties involved that
we achieve a smooth transition
from the current Thursday
market to the new one,” the
spokesperson said.
Factors considered when
selecting a new location
included avoiding disruption to
nearby businesses, maintaining
a reasonable distance from
residential areas due to
potential noise and traffic,
ensuring sufficient lighting
for evening operations and
providing ample parking
for visitors, the spokesperson
said.
The market’s relocation is
reminiscent of the battle over
the food truck market at The
Arts Centre.
The Central City Business
Association argued in October
last year that food trucks were
unfair competition to brickand-mortar
businesses which
pay rent and rates.
The food trucks were given
the green light to stay in June.
Sunday ad
restrictions
removed
TV broadcasters are now allowed
to broadcast ads on Sunday
morning which could start as
early as this weekend.
TV and radio stations are also
now allowed to broadcast ads on
Christmas Day, Good Friday and
Easter Sunday.
The law change
was confirmed
after a conscience
vote in Parliament
on Tuesday.
TV broadcasters
will also be permitted
to screen
ads on Anzac Day
morning, just as Paul Goldsmith
radio stations
have been allowed to.
Said Media and Communications
Minister Paul Goldsmith:
“We need to level the playing
field by ensuring local media
companies are not disadvantaged
by restricted advertising
times which don’t apply to digital
streaming platforms.
“These restrictions have
become increasingly redundant
as a growing share of audiences
turn to streaming services for
their news and entertainment.
New Zealand on Air data shows
YouTube was the most popular
platform in the country last
year, reaching 43 per cent of the
population daily.”
The $6b ratepayer treasure chest:
Dylan Smits looks at the future
of Christchurch’s ratepayerowned
assets, post-election
Ratepayer-owned companies
appear likely to stay in public
ownership as the city council
maintains its political status
quo.
Six companies – Lyttelton Port
Company, powerlines company
Orion, Christchurch Airport,
fibre broadband provider
Enable, CityCare and EcoCentral
– make up the bulk of the
city’s $6.3 billion asset portfolio.
They are held by Christchurch
City Holdings Ltd on behalf of
ratepayers.
In the latest chapter of the
long-running asset sales debate
between left and right-leaning
local politicians, neither side
has gained further advantage
after Saturday’s election.
Most city councillors still
generally oppose initiating, or
exploring, partial or full sales of
all six key companies.
The left-leaning voting bloc
opposes strategic asset sales
and still has eight
votes, while the
right-leaning
bloc, including
re-elected Mayor
Phil Mauger,
keeps seven.
Re-elected
Andrei Moore
(Halswell
Ward) and Tim Andrei Moore
Mayor Phil Mauger said he would not support selling the city’s shares in Lyttelton Port Company, Orion or the airport during
his election campaign.
Scandrett (Cashmere
Ward) are
more centrist
politically and
will continue to
hold the balance
of power over the
next three years.
They are
both far from Tim Scandrett
convinced any of
the six companies need to be
sold, fully or partially.
Early in his first term as
mayor, in December 2022,
Mauger supported a proposal
for CCHL to develop business
cases, which included options
for partially selling strategic
assets.
Mauger and nine city councillors
voted in favour, getting the
move over the line.
But a year later the council
voted 8-7 against giving CCHL
active management of the asset
portfolio, which could have
further paved the way to asset
sales if passed.
Mauger supported the move.
However, he committed to
not selling the port, airport or
Orion during the latest election
campaign.
Scandrett said this week he
is not in favour of selling any
shares in the companies looking
into the new term.
“I rule partial sales out. I
think it’s a waste of time,” he
said.
Moore said he “struggles to
see a compelling
case” for selling
any shares in the
companies.
“But I’d be
happy to look at
and consider anything,
as is our
requirement to
do so,” he said. Phil Mauger
Neither Moore
nor Scandrett see a partial or
full sale proposal of any of the
companies succeeding.
Mauger had a convincing
election win on Saturday over
rival Sara Templeton – a 20,000-
vote majority.
Mauger received 59,179 votes
to Templeton’s 39,113 in the
preliminary count.
But he still does not have
a working majority of likeminded
city councillors.
During his campaign, Mauger
did not completely rule out
selling or partially selling the
other three key asset companies
– Enable, CityCare and
EcoCentral.
“It’s up to Christchurch
City Holdings to come back
to us,” he told 1News last
month.
When asked by The Star this
week about what could happen
with Enable, CityCare and
EcoCentral in the new term,
Mauger said it was a “bit early
to get into the detail on this one
just yet”.
He said his position has not
shifted since the campaign.
Will it stay in public ownership?
LPC provided an annual
dividend of $12.1 million in
the year to June. The airport
had a $33.5m dividend, while
powerlines company Orion
and fibre broadband provider
Enable both gave $25m.
EcoCentral’s most recently
reported dividend was $5m
in 2024 and CityCare is not
providing a dividend due to its
loan repayment plan.
There has been speculation
about private interests wanting
to buy or lease the port.
DP World is a multinational
logistics company, owned by
the Dubai Government, which
has had meetings with LPC.
But LPC denies conversations
between the companies
involved selling or leasing the
port.
Jake McLellan (Central Ward)
feels “confident” the city’s
top strategic assets – LPC, the
airport and Orion – will remain
in public ownership in the next
three-year term.
“The mayor has
consistently said
on the campaign
trail that he
doesn’t want to
sell the assets.
So, if taken at
his word, they
shouldn’t be
under threat,” Jake McLellan
McLellan said.
Despite several left-leaning
incumbent city councillors
faced serious election
challenges from candidates
more open to exploring partial
asset sales, all were re-elected.
McLellan was considered
at risk of losing his seat, but
Mauger did not completely rule out sales for EcoCentral, Enable or CityCare.
PHOTOS: CCC
managed to fend off his closest
opponent Raf Manji by 676
votes (1801 to 1125).
Manji was one of the
candidates most interested
in exploring partial key asset
sales, while McLellan is a
memberof the left-leaning of
The People’s Choice political
ticket, which wants to keep
the assets in full public
ownership.
All incumbent city councillors
who stood for re-election won,
including the six People’s
Choice members.
Nathaniel Herz-Jardine, also
with People’s Choice, won
the vacant Heathcote Ward,
replacing Templeton who stood
for mayor only, while leftleaning
independent Celeste
Donovan was re-elected in
Coastal Ward.
It means the council table’s
left-lean was maintained and
only one other city councillor,
typically Moore or Scandrett, is
needed to reach the nine-vote
majority.
McLellan said he does not
expect Mauger to push for
a sale of Enable, CityCare
or EcoCentral and would be
disappointed if he did.
“Unless you explicitly
campaign on doing something,
you should be very wary of
doing it.”
However, McLellan said
selling of any of the three
companies is not impossible as
the left-leaning bloc still does
not have a strong majority after
the election.
He said the re-election of all
left-leaning incumbents is a
mandate from voters to oppose
strategic asset
sales.
“The numbers
on Saturday
are sort of an
insurance policy
to make sure
asset sales don’t
happen. So
people should
feel assured but
always vigilant.”
Sam
MacDonald
Sam MacDonald (Waimairi
Ward) said other city councillors
should keep an open mind
on any proposal CCHL might
have for the assets.
The right-leaning city councillor
did not know if there would
be an appetite at the council
table for any major changes
proposed by CCHL.
“It’s far too early to know
what will happen. CCHL really
needs to look at how they can
fund an expansion of the port.
People need to be open minded
and sensible in their decision
making. Let’s
just see what
happens,” said
MacDonald.
Melanie Coker
(Spreydon Ward,
People’s Choice
campaign chair)
echoed McLellan’s
sentiment.
“I hope there Melanie Coker
won’t be sales,
but I can’t say for sure. It will
depend on whatever CCHL
decides to present.”
Study warns of climate change
threat to primary healthcare
Climate change could have a
major impact on the health
system, making it even harder
for people to see a doctor,
according to new research.
While most climate change
healthcare planning focuses
on heat-related illnesses and
mosquito-borne diseases,
Canterbury University PhD
candidate Darcy Glenn said primary
healthcare access is being
overlooked.
Her research
models how
climate-driven
pressures, such
as sea level
rise, population
migration and
longer appointment
times could
overwhelm New
Zealand’s already Darcy Glenn
stretched general
practitioner clinics.
“In Christchurch alone, four
coastal medical clinics are at
risk of being affected by sea
level rise by mid-century,”
Glenn said.
“At the same time, if climate
change drives more migration
to New Zealand or increases
patient demand through longer
appointments, many practices
will simply not have capacity.
That could mean patients being
turned away and struggling to
find a new doctor.”
New Zealand already faces
a GP shortage, with many
Four coastal medical clinics in Christchurch are at risk of being affected by rising
sea levels by 2050 due to climate change, according to new research.
practices closing their books to
new patients. Upcoming retirements
are set to worsen the
problem, as 34% of older GPs
plan to retire within the next
five years.
Glenn’s research uses a novel
modelling approach that factors
in both patient preferences
(such as cost, opening hours or
distance to their GP practice)
and GP capacity to reveal where
bottlenecks might appear.
The research is currently
focused on Christchurch but will
expand nationwide.
Glenn hopes the findings will
act as a “check engine light”
for policymakers, helping
health planners identify where
more GPs will be needed and
enable the prioritisation of
those communities in need of
additional support.
“There is already work being
done to bring more doctors into
the system, but climate change
means we’ll need to go further,”
she said.
“If we don’t account for these
future pressures now, we risk
being unprepared when demand
spikes.”
The study will be submitted for
publication next year.
“It will add to a growing body of
research urging governments to
treat climate change as a health
systems issue, not just a weather
or environmental problem.”
Sound awareness critical
in early literacy learning
New research from the better
start literacy approach (BSLA)
research team at Canterbury
University highlights the role
of early literacy instruction in
improving children’s reading and
spelling outcomes.
The research evaluated the
effectiveness of the BSLA at scale
to determine the predictors of
reading and spelling success for
BSLA pupils.
The findings show that greater
improvement in phonics and phonological
awareness during the
few months of BSLA teaching is
strongly associated with a higher
likelihood of pupils reaching
advanced reading levels as they
enter year 2 at school.
Phonological awareness is the
ability to recognise and work with
sounds in spoken language and is
a critical foundation for learning
to read and spell. By focusing on
these skills early, teachers can set
children on a more confident literacy
trajectory
Said Professor Gail Gillon,
director of UC’s Child Well-being
Research Institute: “These findings
reinforce what educators
across the motu are seeing in
their classrooms.
“When children build strong
foundational phonological awareness
and word decoding skills
early, their reading outcomes
improve significantly over time.
It’s about giving every child the
opportunity to become a confident,
capable reader.”
The BSLA is an evidence-based
early literacy initiative developed
specifically for the New Zealand
cultural context. It provides
explicit and structured teaching
in phonics, phonological awareness,
vocabulary, oral language,
reading and writing to support
classroom teachers in accelerating
pupils’ literacy learning.
UC’s lead researcher for the
statistical modelling of projected
reading outcomes Dr Megan Gath
said the data gives schools and
teachers valuable evidence that
early progress matters.
“The data confirms the
importance of intentional,
systematic teaching of
foundational literacy skills in
children’s first term of school, “
she said.
Fascination with
‘zombie’ spiders
being killed from
the inside out
Imagine worms growing
inside you, morphing your
body and forcing you towards
water. That is the grim fate of
some endemic spiders around
Canterbury.
Lincoln
University
PhD student
Usha Mendis
is fascinated
by this twist of
nature. She is
on a mission to
learn as much
as she can about
the parasitic
Usha Mendis
nematodes – called mermithids
– and how they turn spiders
into mindless “zombies”.
The mermithids target
all kinds of invertebrates,
including caddisflies, mayflies,
grasshoppers – and large
endemic spiders. That poses a
big problem for our ecosystem,
Mendis said.
So far, she has found three
different types of spiders carrying
the parasite. She is working
to narrow down exactly what
the worm is and which species
of spiders are affected.
“New Zealand has a large
number of endemic spiders . . .
over 90% of them are endemic.
If something were to happen to
them it would not be good for
our biodiversity.
“Spiders hold a special place
in the food chain. When the
worms take over, it flips that
idea on its head. The parasite
completely changes it, the spiders
aren’t filling their normal
role.”
It is a slow, horrible process
for the spider, and always
results in its death.
The nematode gets inside the
spider, then controls how it acts,
grows and dies. It drives the spider
towards water. Sometimes
the spider will even stop eating.
Lincoln University PhD student Usha Mendis is researching parasitic nematodes that target spiders, worming inside them and
taking control before killing their hosts.
PHOTOS: LINCOLN UNIVERSITY
There are few ways to tell
whether a spider is parasitised,
but those infected often grow
larger limbs.
“They can be very abnormal.
Their legs get shorter but
thicker, the spider is physically
changing. The abdomen gets
bigger and swollen too. They
look like zombies,” said Mendis.
But it is not always the case.
The only real way to tell is to
wait until the spider dies and
the nematode emerges, ready
for the next stage of its life
cycle.
While researchers know how
the nematodes come out, they
don’t know how they get into
the spiders. It is part of what
Mendis is trying to discover.
So what do the nematodes
want from the spiders?
Mendis said it is just one stage
of their life cycle.
“They can’t live without a
host. They consume the energy
and nutrients of the host, and
grow inside it.”
The nematodes need water
to progress to the next stage of
their life cycle, which is why
they drive the spiders towards
moisture.
“In that moist environment
they can grow, mate and lay
eggs. Then those eggs hatch and
the cycle begins again.”
Spiders are often found
drowned. Even if the spider survives
the nematode emerging
from its body, it will soon die.
Because spiders carrying
parasites will go out of their
way to find water, Mendis is
using water traps to collect the
nematodes.
It has only been 35 years
since mermithids were first
reported in New Zealand, and
there is still more to do before
we can fully understand their
relationship with spiders, Mendis
said.
In the meantime, she asks
people to reconsider how they
think of spiders, given their
vital role in our ecosystem.
“Spiders may look disruptive
and creepy, but they’re not the
enemy.
“They’ve got their own
problems to deal with.”
Talented Tromp twins looking to learn
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Three months ago, twin
brothers Matt and Josh Tromp
were taking down the likes
of Australian captain Pat
Cummins, Pakistan quick Haris
Rauf and English World Cup
winner Liam Plunkett.
Now, the two cricketers – who
live in the United States but are
originally from South Africa –
are playing in the Metro club
premiership this season.
Matt and Josh, both 20, have
joined Sydenham and Old
Boys Collegians respectively
as part of an effort to develop
their cricket skills in foreign
conditions.
They made immediate
impacts in the opening round.
Matt took 3-14 while opening
the bowling against Riccarton,
while Josh scored an unbeaten
39 as Old Boys chased down 199
against St Albans.
“We managed to get over the
line pretty comfortably in the
end,” said Josh, who scored Old
Boys’ winning runs.
The brothers learned their
craft in South Africa, where
they lived until they were 17.
Their father Brett, a chartered
accountant, then accepted a job
in Austin, Texas, and the family
relocated from Johannesburg to
the US.
Not knowing much about
cricket in North America, the
twins were initially sceptical,
but Matt said the sport there is
on a rapid rise.
“A lot of owners of big
Josh Tromp, left, and twin brother Matt starred on Christchurch club cricket debut on Saturday. Josh scored an unbeaten 39
for Old Boys Collegians and Matt took three wickets for Sydenham. The pair have moved from the United States to develop
their cricketing skills here over the summer.
companies decided they’re
going to invest in cricket in the
US, and now with Major League
Cricket (MLC), it has just shot
up a bit and infrastructure is
growing.”
The MLC competition,
launched in 2023 to grow the
game in the US, has already
attracted some of the world’s
best players.
Matt, who plays for the LA
Knight Riders, shared a dressing
room this year with West Indian
stars Andre Russell and Sunil
Narine.
Josh’s team, the Texas Super
Kings, is coached by former
Black Cap Stephen Fleming,
and he played alongside Kiwis
Devon Conway, Mitchell Santner
and Daryl Mitchell.
Both brothers saw success
against the San Francisco
Unicorns in this year’s
competition, which featured
stars such as Cummins, Rauf,
and Plunkett.
Matt made 41 on debut,
hitting three sixes, while Josh
scored 56 not out in the semifinals
in a century partnership
with Conway.
It was the Kiwi connection
which brought the brothers to
Christchurch.
Said Josh: “I mentioned to
Flem and Daryl that I was
looking to go play a season
overseas and I was looking at
Australia. They were like, ‘you
should come to Christchurch,
it’s a great city. The cricket will
be good, you’ll love your time.’
“They sort-of set everything
up. Daryl got me in contact
with someone from Canterbury
Cricket and then they got me in
contact with OBC, and it went
from there.”
The twins are currently training
in the nets at Hagley Oval,
playing plenty of golf, and completing
online finance degrees
through Liberty University.
Now USA-eligible after three
years of residency, Matt is
hopeful of an international
call-up.
“International cricket is
awesome. That’s why I think
we all play cricket – to play
internationally,” he said.
In other premiership results,
Heathcote chased down 110
against Lancaster Park, while
Burnside’s clash with East
Shirley was abandoned due to a
waterlogged pitch.
This weekend Josh’s Old Boys
take on Riccarton at Upper
Riccarton Domain in the second
round of two-dayers, while
Matt’s Sydenham side host
defending champions Burnside
at Sydenham Park.
East Shirley plays Heathcote
at Burwood Park and Lancaster
Park will meet St Albans at
the Nursery Ground by Hagley
Oval.
All matches start at 10.30am
Darts title for Shirley Boys’
In a sudden-death finish, Shirley
Boys’ High School has won the
inaugural Canterbury secondary
schools darts tournament. Shirley
beat Ellesmere College in a playoff
after both teams were tied on wins
at the end of the competition. With
Shirley and Ellesmere racing to
score 1001, Lucas Tilley landed a
double-18 to secure the win, and
the Kerry Treymane Trophy, for his
school.
Grand final spot in reach
The Eastern Blues AFL club will
look to book a direct berth to the
Canterbury final when they take on
Mid-Canterbury Eagles at 2.30pm
in Saturday’s final round of games
at QEII Park. The Blues hold a fourpoint
advantage over the Eagles and
Christchurch Bulldogs, who take
on winless University at 12.30pm.
First place at the end of the regular
season earns a week off and a spot
in the final in two weeks, while the
second and third-place side will meet
in next weekend’s semi-final.
They said it
“I had to take a few jelly beans and
Coke to get going. It wasn’t the
prettiest innings but sometimes you’ve
got to do it ugly.”
Home course advantage helps
Miya to breakthrough victory
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Pegasus’ Yuki Miya will be
looking to build on his success
after claiming his first win on
the Charles Tour on his home
course last week.
Miya, 19, held off professionals
Harry Bateman and Steven Oh
by one shot, finishing 12-under
to seal victory.
It was the Golf New Zealand
Academy player’s third
consecutive top-four finish
on the tour, after placing
third at the Mount Open at Mt
Maunganui and fourth at the
Carrus Open in Tauranga last
month.
Miya will next play the
Taranaki Open in New
Plymouth, which is also part of
the Charles Tour, starting next
Thursday.
Pegasus general manager
James Devlin, who also competed
last week and finished in
a tie for 20th, said Miya was a
golfer with exceptional talent.
“He has been playing for our
interclub team for the last three
years and is obviously still very
young,” he said.
“But when you look at the
work that goes in, that age
becomes less important when
the hours are going in.”
Pegasus’ Yuki Miya sealed a first Charles Tour victory on his home course last week.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER/BW MEDIA
Miya began the final round on
Friday one shot behind Oh and
one ahead of Bateman. By the
12th hole, the trio were locked in
a three-way tie for the lead.
A birdie on the 15th gave
Miya the lead, which he never
relinquished.
He rolled in a par putt on the
final hole to seal victory by one
stroke – his first win on tour.
The result saw the teenager
jump from ninth to second on
the tour standings with 915
points, behind Tauranga’s Josh
Geary on 1142.5.
Clearwater’s Cooper Moore
dropped from fourth to fifth
in the overall standings after
missing the Pegasus event to
represent New Zealand at the
Eisenhower Trophy world
amateur teams championship
in Singapore.
Moore, who is in year 12 at St
Bede’s College, teamed up with
Auckland’s Robby Turnbull
and Napier’s Zack Swanwick,
with the side finishing tied for
14th, 23 shots behind runaway
winners South Africa.
On the individual
leaderboard, Moore tied for
77th, finishing nine-over after
the tournament’s four rounds.
The winner was South African
Christiaan Maas, who finished
10 shots clear on 22-under.
Moore’s next event will
be the Asia-Pacific Amateur
Championship in Dubai,
starting next Thursday, with
the winner earning invitations
to the 2026 Masters and British
Open Championship.
Christchurch among the first to test New Zealand’s
new census survey
The way New Zealand conducts the census is
changing, and Christchurch residents are among
the first to test the new collection system.
In June 2025, Stats NZ announced its plans
to modernise the census. The new approach
prioritises the use of data already collected by
government (known as administrative or admin
data), coupled with a new annual census survey.
and generations to come.
Now, approximately 1,850 households across
Christchurch, Ashburton, and New Plymouth are
being invited to get involved in the first test of the
new survey collection system.
“The live test is a critical step forward in designing
and planning the new approach,” says population
and housing spokesperson, Sean Broughton.
Under the new census model, each year a small
percentage of the population will be selected to
take part in a census survey. This survey will run
continuously throughout the year.
“Essentially, we’re testing how the collection
system works for people, and how our systems
and processes respond. For example, in the future,
paper forms will no longer be used – people will be
able to choose to complete the survey online, in
person, or over the phone.”
This is just the first test. Additional testing and
refinements will occur over the next 18 months,
before the new annual census survey starts in 2027.
Selected households will answer a version of the
2023 Census questionnaire. Questions will be
updated after public consultation and engagement
later this year.
The test runs from 13 October to 28 November
2025. Invited households will receive a letter from
Stats NZ with more information, and instructions
on how to take part. The test is voluntary. Data
collected won’t be used to produce official
statistics, but to test the flow of data through our
systems.
“If your household is invited to take part, we
encourage you to get involved and help shape
the next step in census data collection in New
Zealand,” Broughton said.
“Census insights play a vital role in informing
decisions, big and small across New Zealand.
They influence government decision-making for
important public services in areas like education,
health, transport, and housing, so it’s important we
get the census right.”
Strong start for newly-combined team
BY DIANE KEENAN
A combined Burnside Park
and Sumner team brought
together by their shared coach,
Remi Feneon, will be looking to
maintain their momentum this
weekend after a flying start to
the premier tennis competition.
Feneon has added Sumner’s
top players, Jack Hansen-Ratter
and Madison Aubrey, to his
established Burnside lineup this
season, and the new side made
a strong start with a win over Te
Kura Hagley at the weekend.
Finn Emslie-Robson, Liam
Adams and Hansen-Ratter all
won their singles and Feneon
combined with Hansen-Ratter to
secure the doubles.
On Saturday, they face Edgeware,
who are coming off a bye,
while Te Kura Hagley hosts Elmwood
– who impressed in their
opening clash against newcomers
Mid Canterbury.
In hot, blustery conditions,
Bulls better for big grand final loss, says coach
BY SAM COUGHLAN
Canterbury Bulls head coach
Walt Wilson believes his team
will only improve after the
experience of playing in the
grand final of rugby league’s
national premiership.
The Bulls, top qualifiers from
the southern pool, went down
46-0 in Sunday’s final against the
Elmwood brothers Elliot and
Lawrence Darling produced
composed performances to
overcome younger opponents
Josh Gilbert and Ryan Watt
respectively.
Teammate Tom Batt, recently
returned from working overseas,
also won convincingly, while Mid
Canterbury’s Riley Breen earned
his side’s points with victories in
both the singles and doubles.
Elmwood were also celebrating
success from afar, as their
top-ranked player James Watt
claimed his fifth ATP Challenger
Counties Manukau
Stingrays, the top
team from the
north.
Wilson said his
side needed more
opportunities to
test themselves
against opponents
of that calibre
in order to be
Walt Wilson
Burnside Park/Sumner’s
Jack Hansen-Ratter picked
up wins in the singles and
doubles against Te Kura
Hagley.
title of the year with partner
Finn Reynolds in Jinan, China, on
Saturday evening (NZ time).
Both players have now broken
into the world’s top 100 ATP doubles
rankings.
Mid Canterbury and Bishopdale
will both be chasing their
first wins of the season when
they meet on Bishopdale’s home
courts this weekend.
Bishopdale were well beaten
by Cashmere last week, with the
experienced Cashmere players
adapting better to the tricky
conditions.
competitive at the national level.
“We’ve got a lot more steps to
go, and a big part of that will be
having that exposure against
some of these high-quality
sides,” he said.
Wilson said the Bulls were
outclassed by Counties,
whose suffocating line speed
prevented Canterbury from
making any ground on attack.
POINTS
Men: Cashmere 24, Burnside Park/
Sumner 21, Elmwood 21, Mid-
Canterbury 13, Te Kura Hagley 13,
Edgeware 8, Bishopdale 1
Women: Cashmere 13, Te Kura
Hagley 13, Elmwood 11, Bishopdale 7,
Edgeware 5, Waimairi 4
Experience also came to the
fore in the women’s competition,
where the match of the day
featured Te Kura Hagley veteran
Michelle North-Kelsen against
Edgeware’s Nishitha Maarka.
With the sets tied, North-Kelsen
was down 1-8 in the deciding
super tiebreak but fought back
superbly to take it 11-9.
Te Kura Hagley won the tie
4-2 and will face Waimairi this
week.
Cashmere hosts Bishopdale
– who lost to Elmwood by five
games on a countback – while
Edgeware will be at home again,
taking on Elmwood on Saturday.
“There were a lot of heads
down after the game, but what
I admired about the boys was
they just kept fighting in a
really physical contest.”
Wilson said he hoped to be
involved with the team again
next year, after a successful
season where Canterbury made
it to their first national final in
three years.
Pride pick
up points
as United,
Coastal slip
BY SAM COUGHLAN
The Canterbury United Pride’s
form is improving ahead of a
clash to keep their Women’s
National League hopes alive.
The Pride drew 2-2 with Wellington
Phoenix Reserves on
Saturday, their second consecutive
draw after losing the opening
game of their campaign.
Although they remain near the
bottom of the table, the Pride are
only four points behind the top
two and a win against Eastern
Suburbs on Sunday is crucial to
stay in contention. The match
kicks off at noon at Madills Farm
in Auckland.
In the men’s competition,
Christchurch United has slipped
from first to third after going
down 3-0 to Phoenix Reserves in
their first loss of the season.
They face Western Springs at
home on Saturday at 2.45pm.
Meanwhile, Coastal Spirit will
hope to pick up their first points
when they take on Auckland FC
Reserves away at 2pm on Saturday
at Fred Taylor Park.
Coastal lost 3-1 to defending
champions Wellington Olympic
on Sunday and are bottom of the
league.
