SUNRISE SKIING – IN THE LIGHT OF THE FIRST RAYS OF SUN

While most people are still fast asleep, an experience

begins on the Mittelallalin that will not be forgotten

in a hurry. It’s early in the morning – very

early. At 5.30 a.m. we meet at the valley station of

the Alpin Express. Silence rests over the village,

broken only by the gentle hum of the cable car as it

slowly comes to life. Still half-dreaming, the journey

begins – from 1,800 metres in Saas-Fee up to

3,500 metres, including a ride on the world’s highest

underground funicular, the Metro Alpin.

Text: Laila Zurbriggen

The ascent is an experience in itself. As dawn breaks, snowdusted

larches and jagged rock faces glide past, the view

stretching far across the dark silhouettes of the sleeping

mountains. At the summit, the biting cold of the night greets

us, together with a morning that feels almost surreal. Slowly

our gaze turns east towards Italy, where a faint shimmer appears

first, followed by a blaze of gold. On clear days, the view

reaches as far as Milan. The sun sends its first rays across the

peaks, flooding the slopes with warm light and cloaking the

mountains in a magical aura. A moment of stillness and wonder

– and the sense of experiencing something truly special.

Before heading onto the pistes, a hearty breakfast awaits at

the world’s highest revolving restaurant. As you help yourself

at the buffet, the restaurant slowly turns, unveiling a panorama

more impressive than words can capture: the Allalinhorn,

the Alphubel, the Täschhorn and the mighty Dom – at 4,545

metres, the highest peak lying entirely within Switzerland. The

contrasts are striking. Inside, coffee and tea steam gently in

their cups. Outside, the glacier sparkles while Alpine choughs

circle in the distance. From your window seat, you can watch

the day slowly reaching the Saas Valley. It’s a quiet awakening

that’s powerful yet gentle.

14

Sunrise skiing

Strengthened and filled with a deep calm, it’s time to clip on your skis, take a deep breath and push off. Early in the

morning, the pistes are immaculate – freshly groomed, firm, almost too perfect to touch. The snow crunches softly underfoot,

the air is cold and clear, the horizon is endless. No crowds, no noise – just the glide over pristine slopes and

the sensation of being the first soul on the mountain.

Sunrise skiing is not an experience to tick off a list, but one to truly feel – a serene start to the day, far from the rush

of everyday life, yet so close to the heart of the mountains. Down in the valley, the world is still sleeping. But up here,

it glows in golden light. This is a moment that silences the noise and fills you with new energy. Yes, you have to get

up early – but once the first sunrays gild the peaks at 3,500 metres, all your tiredness fades away. Those who secure

one of the limited places are rewarded with a morning that lingers – long after their tracks in the snow have vanished.

Winter hiking

CARL ZUCKMAYER

WINTER TRAIL

Created in 1996 in honour of the writer Dr Carl Zuckmayer,

this circular trail leads through the quiet larch forests around

Saas-Fee. It invites you to walk in the footsteps of the author

– both in summer and winter.

The starting point is the Vogelweide House, Zuckmayer’s former

residence in the Wildi area. From here, the prepared winter

path takes you towards Bärufalla and on to Mälchbodu.

The route then climbs gently, reaching Café Alpenblick, idyllically

tucked away in the snowy woods on the sunny Hannig

slopes. The descent follows the zig-zag path starting just

behind the café. Looking north, the panorama opens up over

wintry Saas-Fee. Passing Honeggu on the edge of the village,

the route finally loops back towards Wildi – and to the starting

point at the Vogelweide House.

Tip: Take a break at Café Alpenblick and treat yourself to one

of their legendary cakes!

WINTER TRAIL TO

MATTMARK

This relaxing winter hike takes you across snow-covered hills,

along the cross-country ski trail and up to the wintry Mattmark

Dam. Away from the pistes, you can experience the Saas

Valley from its quiet, unspoilt side.

The starting point is the village square in Saas-Almagell. From

there, the path runs through the village, past the car park and

along the road to Zermeiggern. On the way, you pass the chapel

of Zermeiggern – originally built in 1707 and rebuilt in 1962

during the construction of the dam.

From the road closure, the trail follows the cross-country track

to “Eiju Sand”. From there, it crosses a bridge and winds gently

up to the northern moraine. The view opens up onto an impressive

winter landscape. Shortly before the destination, the

path crosses the plain to the foot of the dam wall and finally

climbs onto the crest – rewarding hikers with sweeping views

over silent, snow-covered Lake Mattmark. The return route

follows the same way back to Saas-Almagell.

Climbing in winter? It becomes a true adventure in Saas-

A CHILDHOOD DREAM COMES TRUE

As the last guests return to the valley and head for

après-ski, the lifts fall silent and night settles in, the

working day is just beginning for the snow groomer

drivers. Pädel Beetschen is one of them. Even as a boy,

he knew he wanted to sit in one of these machines

one day.

Text: Laila Zurbriggen

Growing up in Adelboden-Lenk, he was occasionally allowed

to ride along: “That was always an absolute highlight. Whoever

got to ride along most often was cooler than the others.

For some the passion stayed, for others it faded. For me, it

definitely stayed,” he recalls. Today he drives a snow groomer

himself, as part of a team with 17 others responsible for ensuring

that the slopes in Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell are in perfect

condition by the next morning. This is a profession that

demands precision – but also an instinct for snow and terrain.

Working while others sleep

Shifts begin in the late afternoon or evening, depending on

the schedule and the weather. Up to twelve machines are on

the mountain at once, each assigned to a specific area. Some

drivers handle the main runs, others the connecting slopes or

the steep sections where the winch is needed.

A modern snow groomer has up to 520 horsepower and

weighs around 13 tonnes. GPS-based snow depth measurement

shows the driver on screen where the snow is too thin

or unevenly spread. “The easiest conditions are when it’s cold

and there’s enough snow. Fresh snow or wet, heavy spring

snow makes things trickier,” Pädel explains.

Driving requires full concentration. Every movement of tiller

and blade changes the surface of the snow; every decision

affects how the piste will look the next morning. The formal

training is short – a two-day theory course and a driving licence

are enough. The real challenge lies in practice, which

only comes with experience. “Steering and grooming are all

about feeling – and that comes over time,” says Pädel. “It really

is a case of learning by doing. The longer you do it, the better

you get.”

32

Safety first

Clear nights are challenging, but if there are snowstorms,

foggy conditions or avalanche warnings the job becomes a

balancing act between precision and safety. “Safety always

comes first,” Pädel stresses. Sometimes pistes remain closed

even in sunshine if blasting couldn’t be carried out.

Dense fog can also halt operations: “In those situations, our

safety is the top priority. We’re always in radio contact, we

have GPS for orientation, and we carry avalanche transceivers.

And ultimately, we trust our instincts – if it doesn’t feel

safe, we stop.” He remembers his early days: “At first, fog

made me nervous because you can barely see contours. With

time you learn to stay calm and look for other reference points.

But it’s always demanding.”

Steep slopes bring their own challenge. Here the winch comes

into play: a steel cable anchored in the ground, giving

the groomer traction as it works up or down the slope. “The

winch is incredibly helpful – it’s unthinkable to work without it

today,” Pädel says. “But it can also be dangerous. A winch cable

can be up to 1,400 metres long – you might see no vehicle

anywhere near, but the cable is there. That’s why you should

never be on the slopes after closing time – the cable can whip

towards you like a knife, and it’s deadly.”

Invisible heroes of the night

The people working alone on the mountain at night experience

moments no winter guest ever sees: the hum of the engine,

the tracks gripping the snow, the view down to the village

lights with a clear starry sky above. “There are evenings when

you don’t see another soul for hours. Just you, your machine

and nature – it’s really special,” says Pädel.

But the job isn’t a walk in the park. Irregular hours, shifts until

midnight or later, and challenging weather take their toll. Pädel

admits: “You have to be flexible, that’s for sure. But if you

love the work, you wouldn’t swap it for anything.”

By the end of a shift, every slope has been covered and the

snow is smooth and evenly spread. As the first rays of sun

spill over the peaks, the ski area lies silent and pristine before

the drivers’ eyes, ready for the first turns of the day. Most people

see snow groomers only from afar, as blinking lights moving

in the shadows of the mountains. Yet without their work,

the pistes wouldn’t be safe and even in the morning. They are

the silent heroes of the night – invisible but indispensable to

every ski resort.

ICE SPORTS

If you’re looking to try something different in winter, the ice is

the perfect place. With two different types of curling on offer,

the Saas Valley guarantees plenty of fun.

In Bavarian curling, precision is everything and the aim is to

place your stick as close as possible to the target disc. The

other type of curling, which can be played on the natural ice

rink in Saas-Fee, is a little more tactical.

Both ice sports bring variety to a winter’s day – and provide

cheerful moments away from the slopes.

TRAVEL SUSTAINABLY

FINDING A HOME IN THE MOUNTAINS

German, English, Spanish, French and even Chinese –

stroll through the streets of the Saas Valley and you can

hear half the world. For many, it’s the dream of a gap

year: broadening horizons, seeking adventure, learning

new languages. Yet the charm of the Saas Valley casts

a spell that is hard to shake. What begins as a single

season often turns into years – sometimes a lifetime.

Three seasonal workers share how they came for just

one winter but, the Saas Valley ended up becoming

their second home.

Emily | 29 | Ireland

Originally from Dublin, Emily first visited Saas-Fee in 2009

as a teenager on a family holiday – a memory that remained

faint. The real turning point came with her return in 2018. She

planned to take a gap year to improve her skiing and gain her

first instructor’s level. “After that first season I was offered the

chance to come back as a qualified ski instructor and train for

the next level. For me, it was an easy decision.”

Then came the pandemic. At first Emily stayed put in Dublin,

but as soon as travel restrictions eased in 2020, she was on

the first plane to Geneva. “All I wanted was to get back to

Saas-Fee.” What was meant to be months turned into years.

She advanced her training, gained experience – and fell in

love. “Not with a local, but with another ski instructor who

probably loves the mountains even more than I do.”

Today, in 2025, Emily is still here. In winter she teaches skiing

with passion; in summer she switches depending on mood

and opportunity. What keeps her here is the blend of mountains

and community: “Within five minutes you’re in the forest

or up a mountain. And you always meet friends in the street

– plans just happen spontaneously.” Sometimes she needs a

break from the valley, she admits, “but as soon as the 511 bus

winds up the curves and the Mischabel peaks come into view,

I know that I’m home.”

Nick | 29 | New Zealand

Born in Kiel but having emigrated with his family to New Zealand

as a toddler, Nick still feels every bit a “Kiwi”. His first

encounter with Saas-Fee was in the winter of 2023. Together

with a friend – with whom he had already spent a season

in Austria – he set out in search of the next adventure. The

choice of the Saas Valley was no accident: the altitude, the

glacier, the cosy village – it was exactly what they were looking

for. “We applied for work straight away and quickly found

something.” His first job was at Cesar Sport Alpine, where

from day one he felt part of the team.

One winter turned into more. After a summer in Spain, Nick

returned in 2024 – and stayed. “It’s the mix of nature and

community that keeps me here. You walk through the village

and you’re bound to bump into friends. It makes life simple

and spontaneous.” Today, he works with the Saas-Fee Guides,

maintaining hiking and biking trails in summer. For the coming

winter, he has set his sights on a new goal: ski instructor training.

“After a lifetime on skis and three winters as a seasonal

worker, it’s time to make it official.”

For Nick, home means two places: family and the sea in New

Zealand – which he misses – but also the Saas Valley, which

has become a second home filled with friendships, adventures

and the feeling of having arrived. “If you’re happy, you just

stay.”

Lyndsey | 38 | Wales

Originally from North Wales, Lyndsey first came to Saas-Fee

around ten winters ago – planning only a single season before

moving on to Australia for the next one. The trigger was

a wedding in Wales, where she met someone from Zermatt

– and suddenly the conversation revolved around skiing and

mountains. At the time, Lyndsey had a stressful office job and

thought: “Why not? I’ll give it a try.” Her first job in the Saas

Valley was in the Skihütte restaurant. It was meant to be a

stopgap, but the following summer convinced her she wanted

to stay. “I did things I would never have done in the UK – hikes,

via ferratas, just being outdoors. And I knew this was where I

wanted to be.”

What followed could be called fate: she met Mike, now her

life partner, and together they built a life in Saas-Fee. Today,

they have a four-year-old daughter. Lyndsey works at the

Spielboden restaurant and cherishes what visitors only

experience for a short time: “Sometimes I tell my daughter:

people come here for their holidays – and we get to live here.”

One defining moment for Lyndsey was her first climb of the

Mittaghorn. Standing on the summit, she realised that she had

achieved something that would have been unthinkable in her

old life – and that these mountains had truly become her home.

For her, home means family, friendships and a sense of belonging.

“I wake up, look around me, and feel no stress.” Her

advice to new seasonal workers: learn the language, keep

an open mind, miss nothing. “Don’t say no too quickly – try

things, throw yourself into the adventure.”
