W
hen we invited our TSC Founder’s Retreat host Sarah Wetenhall to take the stage
at our annual Summit in 2024, we had no idea that she would become one of our
biggest cheerleaders. She immersed herself in the event and continues to do so
in our community ever since. Sarah’s genuine excitement and her embodiment
of #connectcollaboratecreate brings us to The Colony where she has helped us shape a truly one
of a kind experience. One of a kind - just like each and everyone of you.
As you turn the pages of COTERIE, you’ll see the inspiring women and feel the collective,
palpable energy that sets our community apart. You’ll find our Retreat agenda and our
incredible lineup of presenters. Dive into their businesses and unique personal journeys and
give them a follow. You’ll quickly understand why these talented entrepreneurs were tapped
for this year’s stage.
We’re thrilled to have Veranda’s Steele Marcoux, Society Social’s Roxy Owens, designer Amanda
Lindroth and last year’s COTERIE covergirl, Lydia Fenet, returning. These women bring invaluable
energy and excitement to all that they do. It’s our returning “ambassadors” and their ability to
help, host, mentor and simply connect us that reminds us why this community thrives. It’s
just truly magical.
Speaking of thriving - our dedicated community caught the attention of Forbes! When senior
contributor Elaine Pofeldt spoke to members earlier this year, she witnessed first hand what
would become the title to her article “Women Entrepreneurs Are Rising In The American South.
More Want To Join Their Community.” Sarah shared that her husband sent her our recent
Forbes article and she teased that we gave her a “feather in her cap.” National recognition
from a publication like Forbes is a milestone moment for us and brings to light what we’ve
known since our first event in 2013 - the undeniable power of community and creative female
entrepreneurs when they #connectcollaboratecreate.
Each and every member and alum of The Southern Coterie creates endless ripples within their
own community. We have the pleasure of seeing this first hand through #ispytsc. It usually
starts with one simple phrase “how can I help” - the little things are indeed the big things.
It’s your generosity that creates that first circle of support and then the magical ripple begins.
Dive in! We can’t wait to see what’s next for all of us.
P.S. If you aren’t able to join us in Pink Paradise,
scoop up a ticket to TSCSUMMIT in January at
Sea Island (pg. 23).

of Coniglio Palm Beach
Today’s most resonant brands aren’t built on

where the founder’s personal ethos is not only the
inspiration behind the brand, but also visible in
how they approach their own life. Christina Coniglio
will share why embodying your brand’s values as
a founder matters, how living your story out loud

Tips From Michelle Cordeiro Grant on
BUILDING A
BILLION-DOLLAR
5BRAND
Michelle Cordeiro Grant is a serial entrepreneur, brand
builder and innovator. Michelle founded the energy
drink GORGIE in 2022. Michelle is also an avid angel
investor, podcast host, public speaker, mentor to
women in business, and mom of two.
1.
Start with your community, not your idea.
From day one, I went straight to the people I wanted
to serve, asking them what flavors they craved, how
they wanted to feel, even if they preferred a can or
a bottle. The best brands aren’t built in a vacuum,
they’re co-created with the community!
Bring an aesthetic eye to the most unlikely
2.
places. Why can’t something that’s good for you
also be gorgeous and fun? With GORGIE, I wanted
clean energy and packaging you’re proud to carry.
Design is just as important as function, it’s what
makes people emotionally connect - and ultimately
what encourages them to make that first purchase
decision!
Sell an identity, not just a product. People don’t
3.
just buy drinks, they buy into how something makes
them feel. I always ask: would someone be excited to
post this on their feed? Could this live across both a
retail shelf and New York Fashion Week show? Define
what your spaces are, where you want your brand to
live, and then evaluate each of your decisions to see
if it would work in that world. That’s the bar.
4.
Let creators lead the way. Creators and
community shape culture! We always try to
lean into their authentic voices, encourage their
storytelling, and make sure we match their energy.
They’ve helped GORGIE feel less like a single brand
and more like a movement because they bring
it to life in their real lifestyle moments. Because
they get to share it in a way that is authentic for
them, they share much more proudly and more
frequently, and their audiences can feel that!
5.
Build your dream team and protect your
mindset. Entrepreneurship is a sport, probably
somewhere in the genre of ultramarathon running.
You need the right players around you and the
mental stamina to keep showing up. There will
be tears and setbacks. But with the right people
by your side, you can turn the tough moments
into fuel! Most of our team’s toughest days also
coincide with our funniest moments, and the
fact that we’re laughing where most teams would
be crying is a testament to creating a team of
likeminded people who genuinely want to be on
the marathon journey!

Veranda editor
Steele Marcoux's
Trade Secrets Chat
with Sarah Wetenhall
When it comes to
collaborations, what
qualities do you value
most in a partner?
How do you go about
identifying and
nurturing those
relationships?
We’ve been
fortunate to
work with some
truly remarkable
collaborators,
including
photographer Nick
Miele and designer
Roxy Owens. When
you bring in a
designer, artist, or
brand you want the
brands to compliment
each other - and to equally
lift each other up. Neither
brand should overpower the
other. I also value an openness
to thinking outside of the box when
evaluating a potential collaborator.
I attended the retreat in 2024 as a keynote
speaker, and formed lasting business
relationships and friendships through the event.
Now we’re bringing a mini version of it to The
Colony as a more intimate gathering and I can’t
wait to share the experience with this new group
of entrepreneurs. The Retreat will be packed
full of great advice, testimonials about others’
personal experiences and challenges and (as
always) tons of networking and mentoring.
What does great leadership look like to you,
especially in an industry rooted in service and
experience?
Great leadership means staying true to our
mission and protecting the integrity of our brand.
Every decision we make—whether operational
or creative—has to make sense both from
a leadership perspective and for the guest
experience. It should tell a story, connect back to
our mission and feel authentic. Equally important
is surrounding yourself with talented, passionate
people, and empowering them to deliver on that
vision every day.
Who are the business leaders or creatives you
consistently turn to for inspiration?
With The Colony—and now The Hedges—
you’ve created destinations that feel both
deeply luxurious and intimately personal.
It’s more than just the design, the food, or
the service—it’s the total experience. How do
you consistently deliver excellence across so
many pillars while maintaining a clear and
authentic point of view?
That balance between luxury and intimacy is
something we really strive for. We offer five-star,
best-in-class service, with details like an on-site
restaurant that is open all day, a 24-hour front
desk and concierge. We also design exceptional,
highly curated itineraries that capture the spirit
of each destination—from beach bonfires in East
Hampton to yacht charters in Palm Beach. Most
importantly, we want your stay at The Hedges or
The Colony to be one that you can’t have at any
other hotel. To do that well, every decision we
make–from decor and design, to food, to various
partnerships and activations, to the amenities
and service - is built around creating an original,
authentic and fun experience for our guests.
Design and activation partnerships have
become a hallmark of The Colony’s identity.
What drew you to this strategy, and how
do these collaborations elevate the guest
experience? Should we expect a similar
approach at The Hedges?
Partnerships only enhance the guest experience
and further add to the authentic, local experience.
I love incorporating them into our hotels. Whether
it is a villa designed by Aerin Lauder for AERIN,
Martina Mondadori and Ashley Hicks for Cabana
Magazine, or Gwyneth Paltrow and GOOP–the
guest is able to experience their favorite
brands–and our hotel– in a completely new and
immersive fashion.
I started my career in fashion, working at Calvin
Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, and Hugo Boss, and
between those experiences, and my life as a parttime
resident of both East Hampton and Palm
Beach, I understand what brands our guests
love and how to integrate them seamlessly into
the guest experience. At The Hedges this past
summer, we have already done a few, including
Chanel’s exclusive Summer Salon as well as the
Saks on Amazon boutique. Guests at both hotels
can absolutely expect much more to come!
At The Colony, these partnerships have become
part of our DNA. As part of The Colony’s recent
guest room renovation, we partnered with Roxy’s
chic brand, Society Social, to create furniture that
reflected the hotel’s style. While Nick is one of
our primary photographers of record, capturing
The Colony’s spirit in both editorial shoots and
fine art pieces. His whimsical, old-world-meetsmodern
style are also featured prominently at The
Hedges too. When you find great partners don’t let
them go!
Hospitality is both an art and a business. How
do you balance bold creative decisions with
the pressures of profitability and scalability?
For me, the creative vision drives everything—but
it has to be supported by a strong operational
foundation and outstanding service. A chic lobby
doesn’t matter if service is spotty. We look at
every decision by answering this question: Does
it make the guest experience better? When I
started there were so many things I wanted to
offer–rooms decorated by top designers, Matouk
linens, a brand name restaurant like Swifty’s–and
I believe if we were run by a corporate entity who
prioritized only the bottom line, many of those
things would not have happened. We were willing
to bet on them as strong differentiators and that
approach is one that has proven true almost nine
years later!
You’ve assembled a standout team—sharp,
driven, and deeply committed. What do you
prioritize when hiring, and what traits are
non-negotiable in team members you lean on
most?
I love working with people who think creatively
and enjoy collaborating with me and our
other partners. I don’t come from a traditional
hospitality background which has given me
the freedom to think differently. So I appreciate
working with others who are ready to bring fresh
energy to projects. Non-negotiables? Flexibility,
solid work ethos and a positive attitude! From our
guests to our events, every day is very different
and our team needs to be ready for anything.
You’re hosting The Southern C’s Founders’
Retreat—an intimate gathering of
entrepreneurs and business leaders. What are
you personally most excited about, and what
do you hope participants walk away with?
I am very inspired by women who have built
strong brands and have stayed true to their
vision, while balancing family and a personal
life. Aerin Lauder of AERIN, Gwyneth Paltrow
with GOOP, and Anna Brockway Founder of
Chairish are all sources of inspiration for me.
Blair Clarke of Voltz Clarke gallery was one of
our first collaborators and I love her expert eye
and balanced viewpoint. Vira Capeci, who is CEO,
The Americas of BALENCIAGA, is a close friend,
advisor, and shoulder to lean on. My friend Rachel
Shectman who founded the retail concept Story,
has helped us build our retail program. These are
just a few of the women I admire and look to for
advice and inspiration.
Do you have any daily habits or rituals—
personal or professional—that help ground
you as a leader?
I love to wake up early then stay in my PJs in bed
and read the local news for both our properties. I
always connect with my team early and map out
my to-do’s for the day. I am constantly juggling–I
would love to achieve that magical thing called
balance, but until then starting out slowly and
comfortably is the best way to start the day.
What’s one piece of advice you always give to
aspiring founders, especially those entering
creative or lifestyle industries?
Don’t be afraid to ask, What if we tried…? around
every aspect of your business. Particularly in
lifestyle and hospitality, people crave new things,
so you want to be able to offer them experiences
that feel unexpected. This means constantly
questioning, testing and reinventing every aspect
of what we do - it also means that we will fail.
A LOT. But that is okay; in failing there is growth
and learning.
And finally, for fun: if you were an antique or
vintage chair, which would you be and why?
Without question a vintage rattan Peacock
Chair. I have two for my YouTube show Sarah
Wetenhall’s Untitled Talk Show - and they are in
all of my homes and hotels. The Peacock chair
conveys the perfect combination of playfulness,
heritage and glamour, all things that are at the
heart of everything we do.

She’s a brilliant tastemaker, trendsetter, and world traveler!
Let’s hear what keeps her coming back to TSC Summit on Sea Island year after year…
Over the past ten years on Sea
Island, what’s been the most
significant way TSC Summit has
impacted your entrepreneurial
journey?
The most significant way the
TSC Summit has impacted my
entrepreneurial journey is by shifting
my mindset from operating locally to
thinking on a broader scale. Hearing
directly from successful founders
and engaging with peers gave me
the confidence to refine my vision
and the tools to execute it. Beyond
the inspiration, I gained a network
of mentors and collaborators whose
insights continue to guide my
decisions. On a personal level, I’ve also
built lasting friendships with strong,
inspiring women who continue to
support and uplift me. I would have
never continued my daily newsletter
without the help of TSC.
Think about the connections you’ve
made here. Is there one particular
relationship or collaboration that
truly stands out as a “TSC Summit
success story?”
I was personally lucky enough to
collaborate with Lacefield Design and
create a textile collection and range
of pre-made pillows with them — a
project that never would have come to
life without the connections made here
at TSC Summit. I’m also constantly
inspired by success stories like BURU,
which has built an incredible business
through collaborations with so many
TSC creatives. To me, that’s the true
power of this community — turning
shared ideas and relationships into
something tangible and lasting.
What’s the most unexpected thing
you’ve learned or experienced at
TSC Summit over the years (you’ve
been attending TSC Summits since
our first one in 2013 on Jekyll
Island)?
One of the most unexpected things
I’ve learned at the TSC Summit is
that regardless of the size of your
business, we all share similar
struggles when it comes to growth
and managing people. Bringing
together entrepreneurs from different
industries and stages creates a unique
sense of community — where the real
value comes from openly sharing
knowledge, lessons, and experiences.
That exchange not only makes the
journey feel less isolating, but also
strengthens us collectively as leaders.
If your TSC Summit experience was
a playlist, what’s one song that
would represent the energy of your
first few years, and what song would
represent where you are now?
Without a doubt, the song that
represents my first few years at the
Summit — and really this growing TSC
empire — is ‘Run the World (Girls)’
by Beyoncé. It celebrates women’s
empowerment and reminds us that
we are leaders, fighters, and powerful
voices shaping society. The refrain,
‘Who run the world? Girls!’ felt like
both a declaration and a rallying cry in
those early years.
Today, I’m in a different place.
I’m no longer trying to do it all —
instead, I’ve been intentional about
stepping back and taking on only
the projects that truly bring me joy,
especially large-scale whole homes.
The design world has shifted with
Pinterest and Instagram, and while
it’s opened access, it has also led to
a lot of emulation that sometimes
overshadows true creativity. That’s
why the song that speaks to me
now is ‘Redesigning Women’ by The
Highwomen. It’s a cheeky, harmonyrich
celebration of womanhood,
highlighting how we continually
reinvent ourselves, shoulder multiple
roles, and persevere with humor and
grace. It’s witty, smart, and deeply
poignant — and it perfectly mirrors
where I am in my journey today
Beyond the incredible speakers and
workshops, what’s your favorite
non-official “tradition” or guilty
pleasure at TSC Summit?
Honestly, Holly Audrey Williams
singing is always such a highlight —
she’s so talented, and I’m amazed at
how she balances running businesses,
raising kids, and performing. Another
favorite for me was Betty Soldi’s
session. Her ‘Inksperiences’ felt
so magical — it wasn’t just about
calligraphy, it turned into this really
personal and creative experience.
Imagine TSC Summit ten years from
now. What’s one thing you hope
remains the same, and one new
thing you’d love to see added?
Ten years from now, I hope the spirit of
community at TSC Summit remains
the same — that feeling of connection
where entrepreneurs of all sizes and
backgrounds come together to learn
from each other. The time set aside
for networking and fellowship is truly
invaluable, and I’d love for that to
always be a core part of the experience.
Looking ahead, I’d also love to see
more creative workshops added,
giving us fresh ways to spark ideas,
collaborate, and tap into different
sides of entrepreneurship.
If you had to describe your TSC
Summit attendance in three emojis,
which ones would you pick?
Creativity – especially for
unique workshops like Betty
Soldi’s “Inksperiences” and the
magic that happens when you put all
these creatives together.
Energy/Passion – captures the
spark and motivation you leave
with.
Strength – for the resilience, grit,
and inspiration from the Summit
For all the new attendees here,
what’s one “must-do” at Sea Island
that you always make time for?
16
For new attendees, a must-do at Sea
Island is to take time to enjoy the
setting — whether it’s a sunrise walk
on the beach, a bike ride, or even a
little spa time. The environment is so
restorative, and it balances out the
energy of the Summit. But just as
important, I always set a personal goal
of connecting with at least five new
people. Some of my most meaningful
friendships and collaborations
have come from those intentional
conversations outside the official
sessions.
What’s the best “aha!” moment or
piece of advice you’ve ever received
at TSC Summit that you still use
today?
One of my favorite ‘aha!’ moments
actually came through a mentee of
mine, who shared something her
grandfather used to say: ‘How do you
eat an elephant? One bite at a time.’
I love that thought, because it’s such
a powerful reminder that even the
hardest, most unthinkable tasks can
be tackled step by step.
It’s advice I
still lean on
whenever I’m facing challenges that
feel too big to handle all at once.
Any lasting TSC friendships you
want to shout out?
Oh, definitely Cheri and Whitney!
They’re not just amazing founders,
they’re the kind of strong, fun,
inspiring women you’re lucky
to call friends. Honestly,
TSC wouldn’t feel the
same without them
leading the charge.
They are so driven
and hardworking.

Artist
Catherine
HEY!
Cartie
I am a watercolor artist,
illustrator, and calligrapher
based in Fort Worth, Texas.
I specialize in licensing custom
artwork and watercolor patterns
to brands, designers, and
wedding stationers across the
country. I also love creating for
my online product shop, which
consists of original paintings
and art prints, silk scarves,
notecards, gift wrap, playing
cards, and an annual Holiday
Collection featuring desk
calendars, Christmas cards,
and ornaments. I am probably
most known for my butterflies.
A few years ago, I created a
series of watercolor butterfly
paintings that resonated with
my audience in such a beautiful
and unexpected way. To be
able to connect with people
through sharing their stories
of butterflies really made me
understand the power that art
has to bring us together.
When I am not painting or
dreaming of new products or
pattern ideas, you can find me
on the tennis court, at a kid’s
sporting event, or at my favorite
local coffee shop with my
friends and my three
beautifully crazy children.
Where do you go to get your
inspiration?
I am first and foremost
inspired by my children.
They are so interesting
and it’s so fun to follow
where their curiosities lead
them – to different kinds of
animals, flowers, insects,
they are always excited about
something and I admire
and want to emulate how
they find such magic in
the everyday. I am also so
fortunate to have so many
creative business owner
friends that are also moms,
and I am inspired all the time
by their grit, their innovation,
and their passion to keep
building when things get
crazy and hard.
What is the best business
advice you have ever
received?
The best advice I have ever
received is “Bet on yourself.”
In any big or pivotal decision,
where the variable of success
or failure is me, take that bet!

Payal
Khare
I’m Payal, a Miami-based
entrepreneur, global traveler, and
the creative force behind IslaPayal,
an everyday luxury fashion brand for
the modern woman. When I’m not
sketching new silhouettes or sourcing
fabrics, you’ll find me exploring local
markets across the globe, journaling
in hidden cafés, or simply being a
happy mom.
What is a favorite small
business you like to shop
or support?
My favorite small
businesses are Holly
Shae and Just Darviny-
I just love both these
gorgeous women. I
love Garland Bags for
their belts.
Where do you go to get your
inspiration now?
I’m inspired by the women who
I design for, and I want them to
experience the joy of feeling
beautiful in my dresses. I want
them to get complimented every time
they step out in IslaPayal.
I believe that a confident woman
creates a powerful world.
What is the best business advice you
have ever given or received?
The best business advice
I’ve received is - your business
is not about your product.
It’s about how it makes your
customer feel. Focus on that,
and you’ll always be successful.

Your Biggest Asset
The Braintrust
Entrepreneurship is challenging and as Ashley Miles said at TSC Retreat in Round
Top “it takes a little bit of crazy and a whole lot of courage.” She also hit the nail
on the head when she said there is a silent C that we should be adding to our
#connectcollaboratecreate hashtag - commiserate. Don’t we all know it!
Come join us!
We’ll gladly take on that C but let’s add two others - community and confidence.
Commiserating with a strong supportive community builds you up and gives you
the confidence to navigate all of the dips, dives and deviations in your business.
And, that my friends is where we come in.
We’re now over 300 members strong and the diversity in industries, ages, and
stages has helped make our membership community a thriving think tank, a
brainstrust. Come join us! Bring your ideas, your challenges, your questions.
Learn and share week-to week with your TSC friends and familiar faces. We’ll roll
up our sleeves and go to work as a community and continue the connections and
conversations from #TSCSUMMIT all year round.
