NOTE

Yet another year has flown by, and we now find ourselves

at the close of 2025. Malaysian news continues to brim

with remarkable advancements in technology and

innovation — yet amidst the progress, we also hear the

quieter, more desperate cries within our society, as our

youth grapple with growing challenges. This contrast

compels us to pause, reflect, and seek ways to steer our

nation toward more positive and purposeful growth. It

is in this spirit that we present the Reflection Issue of

Tropicana Lifestyle for November and December.

In true Malaysian fashion, we find comfort in food!

Indulge your senses in Savour under our TASTE section,

where we explore the art of luxurious seafood fine

dining topped with pearly spoonfuls of divine caviar at

Elegant Fine Food.

If you’re seeking a spark to reignite your sense of

adventure, turn to our TRAVEL section. Our Sojourn

feature highlights alternative destinations to witness the

mesmerising Northern Lights — from the icy expanses

of Greenland to the rugged landscapes of Scotland —

proving that sometimes, the path less travelled truly

lights up your world.

Prefer warmer climes and outdoor escapes? Under

THRIVE, our Nature article takes you through some

of Malaysia’s most popular hiking trails — from Kuala

Lumpur and Genting Highlands to Langkawi and Johor.

“Take a hike” has never sounded more rejuvenating!

Speaking of rejuvenating, head up to the cool and

breezy hills of Gohtong Jaya and discover Tropicana

Avalon’s Breeze Hill Shoppes and Service Apartments in

Space, under our TREASURE section. A new benchmark

in elevated living and business opportunity, this mixed

development seamlessly integrates lifestyle-driven

service apartments with highly sought-after stratified

retail spaces — offering a distinctive proposition for

both homebuyers and investors alike.

Finally, the team at Tropicana Lifestyle takes a moment

to reflect on our own journey as we celebrate our 30th

Anniversary and the 163rd issue of the magazine! In

this issue’s TOTAL Cover Story, we look back at the

incredible business leaders, entrepreneurs, celebrities,

and movers and shakers who have graced our covers

over the decades. From our beginnings as The Address

— a modest club magazine for Tropicana Golf &

Country Resort in 1995 — to the lifestyle publication

we are today, it’s been an inspiring journey of growth

and evolution.

On that note, all of us at Tropicana Lifestyle would like

to wish our readers a peaceful, joyous year-end and a

bright start to the New Year. May this festive season fill

your hearts with warmth, reflection, and hope for the

exciting year ahead.

CHASING NEW SKIES

Forget Iceland and Norway — these

unexpected countries are stealing the aurora

spotlight with breathtaking skies, fewer

crowds, and once-in-a-lifetime views!

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

11

While classics like Tromso (Norway), Finnish Lapland, and

Iceland remain top picks, there are a few places rising in

popularity for aurora-hunting. These offer less crowded

skies, more wilderness, and often dramatic landscapes that

make the light show even more magical.

GREENLAND

Greenland is one of the most compelling new frontiers for seeing

the Northern Lights. Towns such as Kangerlussuaq, and coastal

settlements in East Greenland are becoming more accessible

and better known. What truly sets it apart as a Northern Lights

destination is its untouched wilderness and remarkably low

levels of light pollution. With small, sparsely populated towns

scattered across vast stretches of icy landscapes, the island

offers some of the clearest and darkest skies in the world.

Among its standout locations, Kangerlussuaq has earned

a reputation as one of the most reliable aurora-viewing

spots, thanks to its unique microclimate that provides a

high number of clear nights each year. The aurora season

here stretches generously from late September through to

March or even April, giving travellers ample opportunity

to witness nature’s most mesmerising light show dancing

across Greenland’s serene, snow-clad horizons

12

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 TRAVEL

Of course, travelling to Greenland does come with its

fair share of challenges. Its’ remote location means

flights often require multiple connections, and once

you arrive, infrastructure such as accommodation and

roads can be limited or rather basic in certain areas.

The Arctic winter can also be harsh, with biting cold,

extremely short daylight hours, and even periods

of polar night in the far north when the sun doesn’t

rise at all. However, for those who come prepared—

with proper winter gear, careful planning, and a sense

of adventure—the rewards are truly extraordinary.

Greenland promises one of the most pristine and aweinspiring

aurora experiences on Earth, offering vast

open skies, unspoiled landscapes, and the rare luxury

of witnessing the Northern Lights without the crowds.

SCOTLAND

Unexpectedly, the northern lights are becoming

more visible in the UK, especially Scotland. Thanks to

heightened solar activity (solar maximum), sightings

are increasingly possible in more southerly latitudes

than usual — though of course the shows tend to be

less intense than up above the Arctic Circle.

Dark skies, minimal light pollution, rugged landscapes. Under

favourable conditions (especially around equinoxes), the Aurora

sometimes becomes visible even further south. But here patience

(and luck) is even more important.

One of the greatest advantages of chasing the Northern Lights in

Scotland is its accessibility for UK residents. With far less travel

time and expense compared to venturing to Greenland or the

Arctic Circle, it offers a more convenient yet still magical aurora

experience. Beyond the celestial spectacle, visitors can also

immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of Scotland’s landscapes

— from misty glens and dramatic coastlines to charming villages

steeped in history. The experience extends well beyond the

night sky, enriched by Scottish culture, hearty local cuisine, and

warm hospitality. And while winter here remains crisp and cold,

it’s considerably milder than the deep Arctic chill, making it an

appealing balance of comfort and adventure.

Beyond Greenland and Scotland, several other destinations are

quickly gaining traction among aurora enthusiasts. Canada, for

instance, has seen a surge in popularity, with regions such as

Churchill in Manitoba, Whitehorse in the Yukon, and Yellowknife

in the Northwest Territories emerging as hotspots for Northern

Lights chasers. While these locations aren’t exactly new, improved

accessibility and global attention have made them increasingly

sought after.

Meanwhile, Norway continues to shine as a classic favourite, with

remote towns like Alta and Kirkenes becoming more reachable

thanks to expanded flight routes and enhanced tour infrastructure.

Even Iceland’s lesser-known Westfjords are stepping into the

limelight, drawing travellers with their wild, untamed beauty —

from sweeping fjords and dramatic cliffs to the allure of long, dark

winter nights free from crowds. Together, these rising

destinations reflect a growing trend among travellers

seeking more remote, authentic, and awe-inspiring

settings to witness nature’s most dazzling light show.

Choosing where to chase the Northern Lights is

only half the adventure — the real challenge lies in

actually seeing them. While luck always plays a part,

understanding the conditions that influence aurora

visibility can dramatically increase your chances of

witnessing this mesmerising spectacle.

Timing is everything. The best months for aurora

viewing typically fall between late September and

April, when the nights are longest and the skies

darkest. Mid-winter offers the most extended viewing

hours, but the shoulder seasons of autumn and early

spring can often provide clearer skies and slightly

milder weather — a welcome bonus for those who

prefer a little more comfort with their stargazing.

Another key factor is solar activity. The Northern

Lights are created by charged particles from the sun

colliding with Earth’s atmosphere, and their intensity

fluctuates with the sun’s 11-year solar cycle. We’re

currently entering a period of heightened activity,

known as the solar maximum, which means brighter,

more frequent displays — even in regions slightly

outside the traditional aurora belt.

Equally crucial is finding darkness. The aurora thrives

in places with minimal light pollution, making remote

destinations like Greenland, northern Norway, and

the Scottish Highlands prime territory. Even smaller

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

15

towns can offer spectacular views if you’re willing to

venture beyond streetlights and into true darkness.

Weather also plays a decisive role. Clear skies are

non-negotiable, so keeping an eye on local forecasts

is essential. Some regions, such as Kangerlussuaq in

Greenland, are favoured precisely because of their

unusually stable weather and high number of cloudfree

nights.

Finally, patience is your greatest ally. The Northern

Lights are a natural phenomenon, and even under

perfect conditions, there are no guarantees. Many

travellers stay for several nights to maximise their

odds, and the most dedicated hunters often head

out after dark, driving to vantage points away from

towns in search of the perfect patch of sky. With

flexibility, preparation, and a touch of persistence,

the reward is an unforgettable dance of light that

feels almost otherworldly.

The world of Northern Lights tourism is shifting. As

awareness grows, transport and tour infrastructure

are improving in places that were once too

inaccessible or too obscure. Thanks to the solar

maximum, displays are more frequent and visible

further south than usual — giving travellers more

opportunities in more places than before.

If you plan well, pick your spot wisely, dress for the

cold, and bring patience (and a camera), you might

just catch those dancing “auroral curtains” lighting

up a sky you never thought possible.

THE FEW WHO

DID IT ANYWAY

Celebrities Who Own Golf Courses

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

17

Owning a golf course isn’t just about deep pockets: it’s about deep

commitment.

It’s high-capital, high-maintenance, and high-stakes. You need

land. Lots of it. In a scenic area. With water rights, maintenance

crews, greenkeepers, zoning approvals, and preferably no swans

with attitude.

You’re not just buying real estate. You’re buying a living landscape.

One that needs daily care, seasonal renovations, and a fiveyear

plan. Which is why most celebrities stay on the soft side

of golf: endorsement deals, club memberships, maybe a design

collaboration if they’re feeling architectural.

Golf is niche. A rare breed would say, “Actually, I’d like to own the

whole thing.” These are the few who did it anyway. For the love of

the game, the land, and sometimes, the legacy.

MICHAEL JORDAN AND THE GROVE XXIII, FLORIDA

Michael Jordan didn’t just build a private golf course, he built a

myth. The Grove XXIII, located in Hobe Sound, Florida, is invitationonly,

ultra-modern, and designed for peak exclusivity. Members

whisper about drone-delivered drinks and a layout that gives

competitive players a mental workout. It’s engineered for precision

and discretion, just like Jordan’s post-NBA empire.

They call it “Slaughterhouse 23” for a reason. This is where

billionaires and tour pros come to test their swing and their nerves.

Of all the celebrity-built golf spaces, Jordan’s is the one that truly

rewrites the rules.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND MIRIMICHI GOLF COURSE, TENNESSEE

Back in 2009, Justin Timberlake took his hometown course in

Millington, Tennessee, and turned it into something special: an

eco-luxury golf destination called Mirimichi. It was one of the

first in the U.S. to earn Audubon Classic Sanctuary status, with

sustainable design, solar-powered facilities, and a strong local

impact. Long before “green” was a branding buzzword, JT made

it his mission.

Though he eventually sold the course in 2014, his vision shaped

how golf could look and feel for a new generation. A little bit pop

star, a little bit conservationist, and a whole lot of Memphis soul.

MARK WAHLBERG AND HIS OWN BACKYARD GOLF RETREAT,

BEVERLY HILLS

Mark Wahlberg doesn’t do things halfway. Known for his famously

early workouts and near-daily golf habit, Wahlberg transformed

the backyard of his former Beverly Hills mansion into a full-blown

private golf facility. Multiple tees, pristine greens, and even his

own staff of groundskeepers; it was part training ground, part

personal sanctuary.

While not open to the public, the space became legendary among

friends, celebrity guests, and golf pros alike. It’s exactly what

you’d expect from someone who treats a tee time with the same

intensity as a film shoot.

TIGER WOODS DESIGNS WITH TGR DESIGN

Tiger Woods may not be known for owning in the same way

some do, but his influence in golf real estate is hard to overstate.

Through TGR Design, he has lent his vision, brand, and philosophy

to courses around the world, courses built more as expressions of

his taste in play than mere real estate bets.

From Payne’s Valley in Missouri to El Cardonal in Mexico, his

hand is in layout, aesthetics, and strategy, making these courses

carry his signature. People hint at his obsession with walkability,

visual drama, and playable risk-reward holes. That kind of design

influence means that even if he doesn’t appear on the deed as

owner, the course feels like his.

A SYMPHONY

OF THE SEA

From the Amur River to Malaysia’s

dining scene, Elegant Fine Food

redefines luxury with rare caviar

and ocean treasures crafted

into culinary art

In the heart of Malaysia’s fine dining scene lies Elegant Fine Food, a restaurant that elevates the

art of gastronomy with treasures of the sea, crowned by its very own brand of caviar — Elegant

Fine Caviar. Born from the vision of founders Dr Rainey Yan and Aaron Tong, this Malaysianowned

brand invests directly in a boutique sturgeon farm on the Amur River, the historic border

between China and Russia. The river’s pristine, icy waters yield roe of remarkable character,

bringing to life caviar of unrivalled purity, flavour, and exclusivity.

The restaurant itself is a stage for this story of patience and refinement. After seven years of

waiting for their first harvest, the founders unveiled Elegant Fine Caviar in December 2024,

offering discerning diners a chance to taste caviar varieties such as Prestia from Kaluga Hybrid,

Luxoria from Russian Ossetra, and the exceptional Imperial Astra from Amur Ossetra.

From the outset, the meal is a journey in elegance. The curated bread selection impresses with its

simplicity, particularly when paired with kombu-infused truffle butter that soaks into the white

and sourdough slices with quiet sophistication. The amuse-bouche trio delights with textural

contrasts and bursts of flavour: a potato waffle with mizoria caviar and crème fraîche, ikura with

cucumber, and a jewel-like smoked maguro tartelette crowned with ikura. Each morsel is a study

in balance, precision, and indulgence.

A delicate Aged Bonito Essence follows, a broth that lingers with umami depth, before moving

into richer plates. The Scallop and Foie Gras is perhaps the only misstep, the sweetness of

its accompaniments overwhelming the prized proteins. Redemption comes swiftly with the

Signature Uni Experience, which, though not for every palate, wins unanimous admiration from

fellow diners for its creamy complexity.

24

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 TASTE

Then, the centrepiece: the Elegant Caviar Experience. Served with

mother-of-pearl spoons and optional condiments, the caviar is at its

most sublime when enjoyed on its own. The Imperial Astra, normally

reserved for the most discerning connoisseurs, encapsulates the

essence of the Amur itself — fresh, nuanced, and quietly luxurious,

each pearl bursting with depth and history.

The menu continues to impress with Hokkaido Snow Crab paired

with crisp caviar crackers, and the standout Signature Cold Capellini

— a showstopper of sashimi-grade scallop, bluefin tuna, tobiko, uni,

mizoria caviar, and truffle oil. Initially surprising for its temperature,

the dish unfolds as a masterpiece of flavour and texture, the kind of

culinary revelation that lingers long after the final bite.

The second main, Norwegian Fjord Trout, offers a lighter but

equally memorable course, its delicate flakes steeped in a sauce

that amplifies the fish’s natural richness. To close, a seasonal Petit

Gâteau selection provides a refined and restrained finale, paired

with coffee or tea for the perfect after-note.

Beyond the artistry on the plate, service is attentive and deeply

knowledgeable, with servers like Mark guiding diners through each course,

ensuring that every flavour and technique is understood and savoured.

Elegant Fine Food is more than a restaurant; it is the embodiment

of a long-term vision, a narrative of patience, precision, and

passion. Here, caviar is not simply served — it is celebrated, in a

dining experience that captures the essence of quiet luxury and the

treasures of the sea.

even Santa takes notes

Ah, Secret Santa — that beloved year-end ritual where you draw a colleague’s

name from a box, spend days pretending you’re totally chill about it, then panicshop

at 10pm in the nearest mall before the office party.

Every December, offices, friend groups and family gatherings across the world

gear up for this joyful chaos. But this year, you’re not going to be the one who

brings another generic mug or “Funny Quote” notebook. No, no — this year,

you’re going to be the Secret Santa Legend. The one whose gift gets passed

around the table for everyone to admire. The one whose present actually sparks

joy (and not confusion).

STEP ONE: STALK LIKE A PRO (THE NICE KIND, NOT CREEPY)

First things first, you need intel. If you are naturally nosy, use it for good! Pay

attention to your giftee. Are they always talking about food? (Let’s be honest,

90% of us are.) Do they love coffee, bubble tea, or live on teh tarik? Do they

collect cute desk toys, or are they the type who’d rather have a new notebook

than a new phone cover?

There’s always a limit — RM30, RM50, RM100 if

stretching that ringgit to look more ‘atas’ than it is.

The trick is to think clever, not costly.

Freezing Office Air-Con Days.”

Even a small gift feels premium when it comes with

thought and humour. Bonus tip: bundle two small

things together — like snacks and a keychain, or a

candle and a “Do Not Disturb” door hanger — and

suddenly it looks like a curated hamper.

STEP THREE: AVOID THE GIFT GRAVEYARD

We all know the graveyard of forgotten Secret Santa

gifts — dusty mugs, scented soaps that smell like

mothballs, or those office stress balls nobody’s

touched since 2017. Don’t contribute to the pile.

Avoid anything too impersonal, too practical, or

too weirdly specific (no one wants a mini yoga frog

statue, Belinda). Instead, go for something fun and

usable. Malaysians love food, so snacks are a safe

bet — but make it interesting! Try artisanal cookies,

locally made chocolates, or even a DIY bubble tea kit.

If your giftee is the office comedian, get something

funny — like a T-shirt that says “Late But Worth It”

or a mug that declares “Boss of My Own Coffee.”

Humour never goes out of style.

34

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 TREND

STEP FOUR: WRAP LIKE YOU MEAN BUSINESS

You can tell how much effort someone put into a gift by

the wrapping alone. The best gifts look sayang-ed. So

even if you’re not Martha Stewart, don’t just shove it in a

plastic bag.

Go eco and chic — wrap it in brown kraft paper, tie it with

twine, and maybe add a candy cane or mini ornament. Or

if you’re feeling artsy, use batik or festive tissue paper for a

local twist. Presentation counts; it tells people this wasn’t a

“last-minute 7-Eleven run.”

BONUS: GO THE EXTRA MILE

If you really want to be the talk of the party, take it up a

notch. Pair your gift with a funny card or a small inside

joke from your office. Maybe a personalised Spotify playlist

titled “Songs to Survive Deadlines” or a mini care pack for

“Post-Christmas Recovery.”

Or better yet — play on local quirks. A “Nasi Lemak

Emergency Kit” (with sambal packets and tissues), or a mini

hand fan labelled “For LRT Situations.” Malaysians love that

kind of humour — thoughtful, cheeky, and totally relatable.

STEP FIVE: TIME THE REVEAL

Secret Santa isn’t just about the gift — it’s about the drama.

The anticipation. The collective “Ooooh!” as your recipient tears

open the wrapping. So, play it cool. Let the suspense build.

If you’ve nailed the gift, their reaction will say it all — the gasp,

the grin, the gleam in their eye that says “Finally! Someone

gets me!” That, my festive friend, is your crowning moment.

At the end of the day, being a great Secret Santa isn’t about

how expensive your gift is. It’s about making someone feel

seen — and making everyone else laugh a little, too.

So go forth and spread some Christmas cheer. Whether

your gift sparks laughter, gratitude, or just a good story for

next year’s party, you’ve done your job.

Just don’t be that person who buys deodorant. Ever.

— and Why the World Just Can’t Stop Scrolling

From left to

and Christiano

Ronaldo prove

their star power

has no bounds

Instagram: where every scroll feels like a peek into a world filled with

luxury cars, gym selfies, golden retrievers, and motivational captions

about “living your best life.” But among the billions of users, a select

few reign supreme — those whose every post sends the internet into

meltdown. From football icons to pop divas and beauty moguls, these

are the top 10 most followed celebrities on Instagram in 2025 — and

why they’ve turned likes, shares, and hashtags into global empires.

As of 2025, the follower leaderboard reads like a modern pop culture

hall of fame: Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list with a jaw-dropping 665

million followers, proving once again that the world simply can’t

resist a chiselled jawline and a Champions League trophy. Lionel

Messi trails behind with around 506 million, showing that even off the

pitch, the football rivalry continues. Then come the entertainment

and business powerhouses — Selena Gomez, Kylie Jenner, Dwayne

“The Rock” Johnson, Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, Khloé

Kardashian, and Justin Bieber — each commanding audiences larger

than most countries.

But what makes them so irresistibly followable? Let’s break it down

— with equal parts analysis and amusement.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi aren’t just athletes; they’re

empires. Their combined follower count could easily populate a small

continent — and it’s easy to see why. Football is the world’s most

universal language, and these two are its ultimate translators. Every

goal, transfer rumour, and family photo goes viral within seconds.

Ronaldo’s feed is a study in aspiration: designer suits, private jets,

sculpted abs, and motivational captions that make you question

your life choices mid-scroll. Messi, on the other hand, offers a softer

approach — all about humility, family moments, and that unshakable

smile that says, “Yes, I’ve won everything, and I’m still just chilling.”

Together, they prove that sport and storytelling go hand in hand —

especially when filtered through a Valencia sunset.

Moving from the football pitch to the world stage of music and

entertainment, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and Justin

Bieber demonstrate the emotional pull of music in the digital age.

Selena, long hailed as Instagram’s sweetheart, blends celebrity and

vulnerability with finesse — one post might promote Rare Beauty,

while the next discusses mental health or features her grandmother

making cookies. It is authenticity served with perfect lighting.

Ariana Grande’s account is pure aesthetic candy — oversized

sweatshirts, high ponytails, and ethereal captions. She’s built a digital

persona that feels both magical and relatable, appealing to fans who

dream of both stardom and self-care. Beyoncé? She doesn’t post —

she curates. Every image feels like part of a museum exhibition on

excellence. She uses her account like a visual diary of power, fashion,

and cultural legacy, often without uttering a single word. And then

there’s Justin Bieber, who’s transitioned from teenage heartthrob

to introspective musician and husband — his posts strike a delicate

balance between pop nostalgia and grown-up spirituality.

Now, let’s talk about the moguls — Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian,

and The Rock — proof that influence is as much about strategy as

it is about selfies. Kylie’s rise from reality star to beauty billionaire

was practically written in Instagram’s algorithm. Her page is a glossy

feed of lips, lashes, and luxury — all blending seamlessly into the

empire that is Kylie Cosmetics. Every post doubles as an advert, yet

somehow feels like a casual peek into her lavish life.

Kim Kardashian, the original influencer before the term even existed,

continues to master the art of reinvention. Whether she’s promoting

SKIMS, studying law, or attending the Met Gala in a head-to-toe

mystery outfit, Kim knows how to make a moment go viral. Her brand

is consistent — polished, poised, and perfectly packaged.

Then there’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who might just be the

world’s most likeable motivational machine. His feed is a delightful

mix of sweaty gym sessions, tequila promotions, family moments,

and “rise and grind” mantras. He’s living proof that authenticity sells

— especially when it comes with muscles and megawatt charisma.

So, what ties these megastars together? It’s not just fame or fortune

— it’s emotional engagement. They each understand how to make

their followers feel something: admiration, inspiration, envy, or even

a sense of personal connection. Their feeds are more than digital

diaries; they’re meticulously managed media channels blending

lifestyle, branding, and storytelling.

They also know how to move with the times. They adapt trends faster

than most people can say “algorithm change.” They cross-promote

between platforms, collaborate with brands, and maintain a delicate

balance between accessibility and exclusivity. It’s not just about being

famous — it’s about being relevant every single day.

Let’s face it: Ronaldo could post a photo of his breakfast, and it would

get a million likes in five minutes. Kylie Jenner’s lip gloss could sell

out faster than you can find your charger. The Rock’s biceps have

their own fan club. And Beyoncé? She could post a blank screen, and

the world would still bow in reverence.

These celebrities aren’t just on Instagram — they are Instagram.

They’ve turned a simple photo-sharing app into a global stage for

influence, inspiration, and, let’s be honest, a little harmless envyscrolling.

In the end, following these stars isn’t just about seeing their lives

— it’s about living a little through them. Whether it’s Ronaldo’s

goals, Selena’s vulnerability, or Kylie’s sparkle, these top ten remind

us why we log on in the first place: to feel connected, inspired, and

occasionally to wonder how on earth they manage to look that good

HONOURING 30 YEARS OF

INSPIRATION,

& COMMUNITY

163 issues strong with more

than 3 decades of defining

style, shaping culture, and

sharing stories that matter to

our community and beyond

As Tropicana Lifestyle Magazine turns the page on its 163rd edition,

we celebrate not just a milestone, but a magnificent journey —

one that has captured three decades of ambition, artistry, and

authenticity. Since its inception, Tropicana Lifestyle has stood as

more than a publication; it is a living archive of voices that have

inspired, enlightened, and empowered. Each cover is a story, each

story a reflection of Malaysia’s vibrant and ever-evolving identity.

In commemorating 30 years, we look back at the personalities who

have graced our covers — the entrepreneurs who build empires, the

celebrities who captivate hearts, the athletes who redefine endurance,

and the changemakers who shape our world. Their legacies, words,

and wisdom form the threads of our shared narrative — one that

continues to grow, adapt, and thrive.

SHARING STORIES

Business Leaders: Visionaries in Commerce

Throughout the years, Tropicana Lifestyle has celebrated the nation’s

finest business minds — individuals who embody vision, perseverance,

and purpose. Our covers have featured over 75 entrepreneurs, each

one with a story of grit and triumph.

Among them, Dato’ Sri Meer Habib, the luminary behind Habib

Jewels, shared, “I want to be in the jewellery business because it

is always about happiness. The path was not always smooth, but

we persevered as a team.” His humility, rooted in teamwork and

community, reflected the essence of success — that true brilliance

shines brightest when shared.

Equally inspiring, Sydney Quays, CEO of Berjaya Food Berhad and

Starbucks Malaysia, offered timeless wisdom: “Having success at

work will lead to success in family and life, because ultimately, the

harder you work, the luckier you get.”

For Dr KS Beh, then Country Head and now, the current CEO of

VitaHealth Malaysia and Singapore, she believes in a more nurturing

approach when it comes to shaping future pioneers, saying, "Within

the organisation, I focus on mentoring and providing training to our

potential leaders."

Each of these leaders — and the many others who have graced our

pages — remind us that business is never just about profit. It’s about

people, purpose, and perseverance — values that resonate deeply

with Tropicana’s own ethos of Redefining the Art of Living.

DEFINING STYLE

Celebrities & Artists: Stories in Stardom

Beyond the lights and accolades, our celebrity covers have always

revealed the soul behind the fame. Across nine unforgettable features,

Tropicana Lifestyle has showcased icons who inspire not only through

performance but through passion and perseverance.

Singer, yoga instructor, and creative powerhouse Atilia Haron shared,

“I never strayed from the spotlight. Whether it was singing Negaraku

at Formula 1 in front of a worldwide audience or performing in P.

Ramlee the Musical to thunderous applause, I treasure every moment

of my artistic journey.” Her story embodied grace and groundedness

— a celebration of self-expression in its purest form.

For Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina, award-winning actress, producer,

and co-founder of BigShot Indoor Golf & Entertainment Centre at

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, reinvention was key: “Being an

entrepreneur is a different ball game from the arts. With the gold

simulators at BigShot, you won’t miss your shot — and it truly makes

going from playing 18 holes to a business Zoom call much easier.”

Tiara’s feature exemplified the fusion of creativity and enterprise that

defines modern success.

Meanwhile, actress and singer Marsha Milan reminded readers of

resilience: “My advice to anyone keen on show business is to figure

out whether this is what they really want. It is an exciting journey

filled with many ups and downs, and there will be times you question

your self-worth, but as long as you are doing your best, don’t be hard

on yourself.”

Through these voices, Tropicana Lifestyle has celebrated more than fame

— it has honoured authenticity, vulnerability, and the courage to evolve.

SHAPING CULTURE

Athletes: Strength, Grace & Endurance

From the fairways to the courts, our athletic cover stars have reminded

readers that greatness is forged through discipline and heart.

Golf champion Gavin Green shared, “Golf can be lonely. When

you miss cuts or go through a bad season, it’s tough. But I remind

myself why I started. I focus on progress, not just results.” His words

resonated far beyond the green, echoing the universal truth that

perseverance is a journey, not a destination.

National badminton Olympian Pearly Tan reflected on her Tokyo

debut: “Stepping into the village was an incredible experience, a

dream come true for all athletes. The support I received from family,

friends, and even strangers from across the globe was huge and truly

motivating. It was this support that calmed my nerves and helped me

perform my best.”

Athletes such as these embody the spirit of dedication — a reminder

that strength is found not only in victory, but in the grace to keep going.

INSPIRING CHANGE

Movers & Shakers: Changemakers & Thought Leaders

Beyond the boardrooms and bright lights, Tropicana Lifestyle

has featured 29 extraordinary individuals — visionaries who

are reshaping industries, championing causes, and driving

conversations that matter.

Among them, Tengku Zatashah stands out as a beacon of

advocacy, sharing, “I aspire to continue making a difference.

Whether it is through #ZeroFoodWastage and #SayNo2Plastic,

my support for Make-A-Wish Malaysia, or advocating for

sustainable development, I remain committed to spreading

love and positivity.”

Similarly, Ken Lim, founder of Kens Apothecary, grounded

his philosophy in humility: “When I am interviewed by media

on being a success, I clarify that I don’t think I am super

successful. To me, the definition of an accomplished person is

someone who has truly made a difference in the world.”

From innovation to social impact, these thought leaders have

elevated our pages — reminding us that influence is not about

spotlight, but about substance.

And as Aaron Lee, Managing Director of Ra-Men Bankara

Malaysia, put it, “Having lived in Tokyo, Ra-Men Bankara

was one of the regular ramen joints I would frequent. The

ramen dishes are exceptionally good, which explains why

it is called Ra-Men Bankara, where Bankara means ‘an

individual’s inimitable style.’” It’s a fitting metaphor for

every personality we’ve featured — each one defined by

their own distinctive flair.

VATIC PRO PRISM FLASH

The Goldilocks Paddle: Balanced, Sleek, and Cult-

Approx. RM499

Slick, stable, and loved by international reviewers.

Vatic’s Prism series has that just-right feel: responsive

but not too springy, forgiving without being mushy.

The 16 mm Flash version gives excellent touch and

control, ideal for net finesse.

LI‐NING HYPERSPEED 100

Subtle Power with a Malaysian Accent

Approx. RM219

From the same house that mastered badminton

finesse comes this understated, well-balanced

paddle. It plays quietly confident, a soft feel, clean

contact, and no loud branding. While not full carbon,

the graphite blend face gives it enough bite to hold

its own.

Best for: Club-level players, stylish intermediates, or

anyone who likes their performance gear with edge.

Best for: Minimalists, weekday court regulars, or players

with good hands looking for refinement over force.

The louder, stronger sibling of Hyperspeed, this

which means it favors players with an aggressive

baseline approach or strong wrist action. Sleek matte

face with no-nonsense styling.

Best for: Players on offense, squash converts, or

anyone who wants their paddle to feel like an

extension of intention.

If pickleball paddles had an haute couture tier,

Selkirk’s LUXX line would be front row at fashion

control core, and sleek, minimal aesthetics that

whisper prestige rather than shout it.

It’s not cheap, but then again, neither is wasted

potential. Known for its generous sweet spot and

beautifully muted impact feel, the LUXX Control Air

suits players who value precision over flash.

Best for: Advanced intermediates to tournament

players, or those who believe a paddle should perform

shy: it’s built to hit hard, respond fast, and intimidate

opponents before you’ve even served. Full carbon

face, reinforced edge guard, and a smooth grit for spin,

everything here is engineered for elite performance.

At over RM1,000, it’s an investment. But it’s also the

kind of paddle that translates athletic intent into

immediate results, if you’ve got the skill to match.

Adidas may be new to pickleball, but they’ve arrived

with signature flair. The RX Carbon ATTK combines

sleek European design with playability that surprises

even seasoned players. The paddle has a carbon

frame, vibration dampening core, and a lightly

textured face for sharp topspin and crisp volleys.

It’s well-balanced, stylish, and carries that

The new S 580 e

from Mercedes Benz

redefines luxury

When it comes to redefining luxury, few names carry the weight and

wonder of Mercedes-Benz — and the new S 580 e is no exception.

The flagship of the locally assembled fleet, this latest evolution of the

S-Class merges timeless sophistication with cutting-edge EQ Hybrid

Technology, embodying the very essence of modern automotive

excellence.

For decades, the S-Class has been more than just a car — it has been a

symbol of progress, a masterpiece that continues to set the standard

for luxury saloons around the globe. Every curve, every stitch, and

every whisper-quiet drive tells the story of Mercedes-Benz’s relentless

pursuit of perfection. Its engines are put through rigorous endurance

testing, while each cabin is engineered to remain serene, even under

the simulated chaos of a torrential downpour. To ensure enduring

quality, the S-Class endures at least 160,000 kilometres of testing

on varied terrain, proving that beauty and durability can indeed go

hand in hand.

Gracefully embodying the brand’s design philosophy of Sensual

Purity, the new S-Class exudes confidence and timeless appeal. From

its sculpted front grille to the elegant sweep of its rear, the car’s

silhouette flows in one harmonious motion — a statement of strength

wrapped in elegance. Adding to its poise are the 20-inch 10-twinspoke

forged wheels, lending the flagship a sense of sophistication

that commands admiration wherever it goes.

Dynamic performance finds new expression in the S 580 e. The

addition of rear-axle steering of up to 4.5 degrees grants this grand

saloon an agility that belies its size — effortlessly maneuvering

through tight city corners while maintaining unwavering stability at

high speeds. Meanwhile, its high-voltage battery brings convenience

to a new level with DC fast charging up to 60 kW, recharging from

10% to 80% in around 20 minutes. Elegant efficiency, redefined.

Step inside, and the S-Class welcomes you into a world where

refinement meets comfort in perfect harmony. The cabin — long

revered as a sanctuary on wheels — now features a centre console

adorned with black dotted lines and a crystal-look finish, elevating

reduces harmful substances and certain viruses — ensuring that every

breath you take is as pure as the drive itself.

Locally assembled at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Pekan, the

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 THRIVE

You won’t believe these trails exist

so close to the city! Here’s a list of

Malaysia’s hidden hiking gems revealed

Malaysia’s diverse landscape is a hiker’s paradise, offering everything from tropical rainforests

and misty mountain peaks to coastal trails with breathtaking sea views. Whether you’re an avid

adventurer or simply looking to reconnect with nature, there’s a trail to suit every mood and

fitness level. Here’s a look at some of the best hiking experiences across Kuala Lumpur, Genting

Highlands, Langkawi, and Johor — each promising stunning scenery, serenity, and a touch of

challenge.

JOHOR

Down south, Johor offers trails that combine nature, culture, and a touch of adventure. Gunung

Pulai in Kulai is one of the state’s most popular hiking destinations, featuring a straightforward

path that leads through tropical rainforest to a summit overlooking Johor Bahru and the Straits

of Johor. Along the way, hikers pass by crystal-clear streams and a picturesque waterfall — a

welcome stop for a quick dip or photo moment.

For a slightly tougher climb, Gunung Lambak near Kluang offers a mix of steep slopes and

shaded forest trails. It’s a favourite among locals for weekend workouts, with a rewarding

summit that offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. Both trails showcase Johor’s

natural charm and make for memorable day trips away from the city bustle.

KUALA LUMPUR: BUKIT GASING & BUKIT SAGA

Amidst the urban buzz of Kuala Lumpur lies Bukit Gasing, a beloved

green escape for city dwellers. Straddling the border of KL and

Petaling Jaya, this forest reserve offers a network of well-marked

trails that wind through lush jungle, small streams, and a suspension

bridge — perfect for a weekend adventure. The moderate terrain

makes it accessible to beginners and families, while the lookout

points reward you with panoramic views of the city skyline peeking

through the trees.

For those craving a bit more sweat, Bukit Saga in Ampang offers

steeper trails and a small waterfall at the end — an ideal spot to cool

off after your climb. Early mornings are best, when the air is crisp and

the forest hums softly with birdsong. Both spots are a reminder that

you don’t have to travel far from the city to find tranquillity in nature.

GENTING HIGHLANDS

If you’re heading to the cool highlands, swap the casinos and theme

parks for an invigorating hike up Gunung Bunga Buah. Starting

near Gohtong Jaya, this challenging trail takes you through dense

mountain forest and misty ridgelines, with an elevation that rewards

you with sweeping views of Genting’s iconic skyline and the valleys

below. The terrain can be steep and muddy, so proper shoes and

stamina are a must — but the payoff is worth every step.

As you ascend, the air grows cooler and the forest shifts into a

mossy, enchanted world — a stark contrast to the humid lowlands.

It’s a favourite among experienced hikers looking for a refreshing

escape and a reminder that Genting’s natural beauty extends far

beyond its bright lights.

LANGKAWI

Langkawi, best known for its beaches and island charm, also offers

some of the most scenic hikes in Malaysia. The island’s highest peak,

Gunung Raya, rises majestically at 881 metres and rewards climbers

with panoramic views of the Andaman Sea and surrounding islands.

The trail is steep but well-paved, with lush rainforest on either side

and the occasional sighting of macaques or hornbills. Those who

prefer a gentler experience can drive up and explore the summit

trails — a perfect blend of convenience and adventure.

Another gem is the Durian Perangin Waterfall Trail, a short yet

satisfying trek that leads to one of Langkawi’s most beautiful

cascades. The sound of rushing water and the cool shade make it

an ideal afternoon escape, especially for families or casual hikers

seeking a serene nature walk.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 TIPS

COMPOSTING

STARTER PACK!

Easy composting tips for Malaysians

because turning your food scraps into

garden gold is easier than you think!

If you’ve ever felt a pang of guilt tossing out your veggie peels or wondered what

to do with those piles of dried leaves after a storm, composting might just be your

next feel-good green hobby. It’s simple, rewarding, and surprisingly therapeutic

— not to mention perfectly suited to Malaysia’s warm, humid weather that speeds

up the process naturally.

Whether you live in a cosy apartment or a landed home with a garden, composting

is your ticket to reducing waste and creating nutrient-rich soil that your plants will

absolutely love. Ready to give it a go? Here’s everything you need to know.

STEP 1: MEET YOUR NEW GREEN HABIT

Think of composting as nature’s recycling system. It transforms kitchen scraps,

garden waste, and even paper into rich, dark compost that boosts plant growth.

In Malaysia, where food waste makes up nearly half of what we throw away,

composting at home can make a big impact — and it’s much easier than it sounds.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

99

100

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 TIPS

STEP 2: PICK YOUR PERFECT COMPOSTING STYLE

You don’t need a huge backyard to get started. There’s a composting

style for every lifestyle:

• Traditional Compost Bin: If you have outdoor space, a simple

covered bin or large container in the garden will do. Just add your

organic waste, mix occasionally, and let nature work its magic.

Left to right: Healthy soil is

truly the goal here gaining

much needed nutrients

from the composted heap;

Compost bins can be small

and within the home or

large for a larger area

• Bokashi Composting: Perfect for high-rise living. This Japanese

method uses special microbes to ferment all kinds of food waste —

even cooked food and meat — in an airtight container. Once done,

bury it in soil to finish the process.

• Worm Composting (Vermicomposting): Yes, it involves worms

(the friendly kind!). Red worms happily munch on food scraps

and turn them into high-quality compost — ideal for balconies or

shaded corners.

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

101

STEP 3: KNOW WHAT GOES IN (AND WHAT DOESN’T)

A healthy compost pile is all about balance — the right mix of

“greens” and “browns”. The greens, such as fruit and vegetable peels,

coffee grounds, tea leaves, and even crushed eggshells, provide

nitrogen and moisture to keep the compost active. The browns, like

dried leaves, twigs, shredded paper, or cardboard, add carbon and

help maintain structure and airflow. Together, they create the ideal

environment for natural decomposition.

However, not everything belongs in the bin — steer clear of meat,

fish, dairy, oily foods, and pet waste, as these can attract pests and

produce unpleasant odours. The goal is a compost that feels damp

but not soggy and smells earthy, not sour — the perfect sign that

nature’s recycling system is working just as it should.

STEP 4: KEEP IT MOIST, NOT MUSHY

Malaysia’s tropical climate can be both a blessing and a challenge.

Compost likes to stay moist (like a damp sponge), but not dripping

wet. If it’s too soggy, add more dry materials. If it’s too dry, sprinkle in

a bit of water or fresh food waste. A good mix will break down faster

and smell earthy, not unpleasant.

STEP 5: BE PATIENT — GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME

Composting isn’t instant, but it’s worth the wait. With the right

balance and regular mixing, you’ll have beautiful, crumbly compost

in about two to four months. You’ll know it’s ready when it looks dark,

feels soft, and smells like rich soil.

STEP 6: GIVE YOUR PLANTS SOME LOVE

Once your compost is ready, use it to feed your indoor plants, balcony

herbs, or garden beds. It improves soil texture, retains moisture, and

gives your plants a healthy, natural boost — all without a single drop

of chemical fertiliser.

102

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 TIPS

BONUS TIP: KEEP IT FRESH AND ODOUR-FREE

A well-balanced compost pile should smell earthy, not funky. If it starts

to stink, it’s likely too wet or missing oxygen. Give it a good stir, add

some dry material, and skip adding oily or meat-based scraps.

Practising composting is

not only healthy for your

plants but is great for the

environment

WHY COMPOSTING IS WORTH IT

Composting is more than just a trend — it’s a lifestyle shift towards

mindful living. You’ll cut down on waste, save money on fertiliser,

and reconnect with nature right from your home. Plus, there’s

something deeply satisfying about watching your “waste” turn into

something beautiful and useful.

So, grab a bin, save those scraps, and let the transformation begin.

With Malaysia’s tropical climate on your side, you’ll be a composting

pro before you know it — and your plants will thank you for it.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 THRIVE

SIPS OF

SERENITY

The art of a perfect Matcha

and what makes it truly

exceptional

For matcha lovers, that first sip of creamy, jade-green tea is more

than just a caffeine fix — it’s a ritual, a sensory experience steeped

in centuries of Japanese tradition. But not all matcha is created

equal. A truly good matcha is instantly recognisable by its vivid

colour, smooth texture, fragrant aroma, and balanced flavour. Each

of these qualities reflects the care and craftsmanship behind its

creation, from the tea garden to the tin.

The first sign of quality lies in the colour. Premium matcha boasts a

bright, almost electric green hue — a result of the careful shading

process that takes place before harvest. Shading the tea plants

limits sunlight exposure, enhancing the chlorophyll and amino acid

content that give matcha its signature vibrancy. In contrast, a dull

or yellowish-green powder often indicates lower-grade matcha that

hasn’t been properly shaded or has oxidised over time.

Texture is another telltale sign of excellence. When rubbed between

your fingers, good matcha should feel silky and soft, like the finest

talcum powder. This smoothness comes from traditional stonemilling,

a slow and delicate process that preserves the tea’s nutrients

while creating an ultra-fine powder. Grittiness, on the other hand,

suggests a coarser grind and a lower-quality product.

Then there’s the aroma — the soul of the tea. A fresh, grassy, and

slightly sweet fragrance hints at a well-preserved matcha. Its scent

may carry subtle vegetal or seaweed-like notes, even a touch of

fruitiness, evoking the lush tea fields of Japan. If the aroma is faint,

stale, or oddly fishy, it’s a clear sign that the matcha has lost its

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2025 THRIVE

The finest matcha

comes from Japan’s

renowned teagrowing

regions

When it comes to flavour, good matcha is a study in harmony. It

should taste naturally sweet and rich in umami — that savoury

depth that lingers on the palate. A top-tier matcha offers layers of

complexity, blending earthy and vegetal undertones with just a hint

of pleasant bitterness. Low-quality matcha, however, often tastes

harsh and one-dimensional, with an overwhelming bitterness that

masks any subtlety.

Clockwise from left: Premium

matcha boasts a bright, almost

electric green hue — a result

of the careful shading process

that takes place before harvest;

iced green tea latte complete

with a head of foam

Origin and processing also play a vital role. The finest matcha comes

from Japan’s renowned tea-growing regions, where generations of

expertise ensure exceptional cultivation and production. Stonemilling

is the gold standard for creating that fine, silky texture that

dissolves beautifully when whisked into water.

Lastly, packaging matters more than most realise. Matcha is highly

sensitive to light, air, and moisture — its greatest enemies. To

preserve its freshness and bright colour, quality matcha is stored

in airtight, opaque containers that protect it from sunlight and

humidity. Once opened, it should be used quickly and kept tightly

sealed to prevent oxidation.

silky green tea mille

In essence, a good matcha is a balance of science and art — vibrant,

smooth, aromatic, and complex. Every step, from the shaded fields

of Japan to the moment you whisk it into your cup, contributes to its

perfection. So, the next time you reach for a tin of matcha, let your

senses be your guide — the colour, texture, aroma, and taste will tell

you everything you need to know about the quality of your brew.

for animals; it’s about nurturing empathy in the next generation, strengthening community

spirit, and supporting shelters that do life-saving work every day. My sincere appreciation for

the generous support and kindness from all involved parties towards caring for the rescued

Tropicana; Oon Khai Yee, Senior Manager, Project of Tropicana; Juanita Lourdes, Sales & Marketing Manager of GreenRE, and Muhamad Fadli, ESG Executive of Tropicana

Last year, Tropicana inked an MOU with GreenRE Sdn Bhd

(“GreenRE”), pledging its long-term commitment to green

building initiatives and driving sustainable living in Malaysia.

This year, Tropicana celebrated two more green building

milestones by receiving GreenRE certification for Tropicana

Miyu residences at Petaling Jaya and Tropicana Cenang’s

Clarissa Serviced Suites at Langkawi. This initiative is also

aligned with Tropicana’s vision to connect communities and

forge sustainable futures by encouraging property buyers to

adopt greener living, reduce carbon footprints, and embrace

a cleaner, greener future. This green partnership focuses on

adopting best practices, as outlined by GreenRE, a leading

green building certification body formed by Malaysia’s Real

Estate and Housing Developers’ Association (“REHDA”) that

promotes sustainability in Malaysia’s property industry.

Allan Wong, Tropicana’s Managing Director of Project, shared,

“For more than 46 years, Tropicana has been redefining the

art of living, pushing the boundaries with the work-live-playshop-learn

concept. This recognition marked another significant

milestone for Tropicana Group, showcasing our continued pledge

to our long-term commitment to green building practices.

We are honoured to receive these awards, and we extend our

appreciation to GreenRE for their recognition and to Temokin

Group for their good support.”

Jeremiah Tan, Executive Director of Temokin Group, said, “Our

partnership with Tropicana is into its 6th year, and it has been a

highly successful few years where we achieved many milestones

together. We are pleased to collaborate with Tropicana,

developing the modern Tropicana Miyu residences at Petaling

Jaya. Having achieved 100% sold-out status and a high QLASSIC

score of 85%, it is certainly a testament to the quality of the

product that was born from this joint effort.”

Over the years, Tropicana has built more than 20 developments

that have received the hallmark of green building certifications,

demonstrating its ongoing efforts for sustainable living. Speaking

at the certificate award ceremony, GreenRE Executive Director

Ashwin Thurairajah shared, “We are pleased to present these two

green certifications to Tropicana and glad to see that Tropicana

has been an advocate of green building for many years.”

As Tropicana embarks on its journey to support Malaysia’s ambition

to become carbon neutral by 2050, it has taken steps to lower the

Group’s carbon emissions by developing sustainable townships

providing many facilities/amenities such as scenic central parks,

lakes & jogging tracks; woodland methodology with drought torrent

plants; energy & water-efficient home fittings; green concrete

& low VOC paint; dedicated recycling area, high-speed internet

connectivity, EV charging stations as well as great accessibility to

major highways and MRT stations for better connectivity. To ensure

its purchasers receive the best value, all Tropicana developments

are evaluated and certified by QLASSIC, a body instituted by CIDB,

and serve as benchmarks for workmanship quality, safety, and

health aspects in construction projects.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2025 THRILL

TROPICANA LIFESTYLE

153

BOOKS VS EBOOKS IN

AN AGE OF ACCESS

On nostalgia, practicality, and the way

we carry our stories

For many readers, the crispness of a fresh paperback brings

instant comfort. For others, access and affordability at the tap

of a screen feel right. In a world full of options, how we choose

to read has become as personal as what we read.

The choice between the two, book or eBook, seems at first like

a matter of taste. But underneath, it says something about how

we move through the world, how we consume, how we hold on.

EASE ISN’T ALWAYS FREEDOM, FREEDOM ISN’T ALWAYS EASY

When you buy an eBook, you’re buying a licensed transaction.

You can’t lend it, gift it, or resell it. You are, quite literally,

borrowing from a digital landlord. But a physical book is yours.

You can lend it, gift it, scribble notes in the margins, or leave it

at a café for someone else to discover.

There’s something subversive about this freedom. About

owning, truly owning, the means of storytelling. A book doesn’t

spy on your reading habits or track how long you spent on each

page. There are no engagement metrics. It asks nothing of you

but attention. And in return, offers a kind of quiet presence,

increasingly rare in the digital age.

But it’s important to recognise what eBooks make possible. For

readers with limited vision, digital books can enlarge the text

or switch to audio in seconds. For people with dyslexia, text-tospeech

and specialised fonts offer a new way into stories. They

can bring an entire library to places where bookstores are few.

EBooks don’t solve every problem, but they do lower the walls

around reading.

A TALE OF TWO FOOTPRINTS

At first glance, eBooks seem like the obvious green choice. No

trees are felled and no shipping is required. But sustainability,

like most things worth thinking about, isn’t so straightforward.

EReaders are made of rare materials. They require energy to

produce and don’t always have long life spans. Many end up as

e-waste, difficult to recycle. And when we replace our devices

every few years, their green promise dims a little.

Printed books, on the other hand, are resource-heavy at the

start, but they’re built to last. A book can be passed through

many hands, donated, borrowed, resold, or kept for decades.

Their energy footprint is front-loaded, but their lifespan

stretches far beyond the shelf they sit on.

Neither is perfect, so the better question may not about which

format is greener, but how do we read more thoughtfully? Maybe

we borrow instead of buy. Maybe we finish what we start. Maybe

we resist the urge to collect what we will not revisit. Sustainability,

after all, often begins not with the object, but with the habit.

THE MARKET OF READING

Whether in print or digital, most books enter our lives through

the same systems that try to turn stories into products, and

readers into consumers. Bestseller lists and algorithmic

suggestions are not neutral guides, but carefully designed

nudges shaped by publishers, platforms, and retailers.

Amazon’s Kindle store, for example, promotes titles based

on purchasing behaviour and engagement metrics, often

favouring fast-paced reads over literary works. In bookstores,

front-table displays are often paid placements, curated for

visibility rather than quality.

This commercial structure tends to reward what’s already popular

and easily marketable, which is why there is always something

beautifully inefficient about books that survive outside of this:

that strange out-of-print novella you find in a thrift shop; the

community-run library that’s free for all; the passed-down copy

of The Little Prince, held together by tape and affection.

WAIT, WAS I SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE?

At the end of the day, no, it’s not really about screen versus paper.

It’s about how stories are shared, who gets to access them, and

what kind of relationship we build with the words we carry.

Both digital and print have value. But one might remind us a

little more of what it means to own, not just the story, but the

act of reading itself.
