Laser Cutting & Waterjet Cutting
Hardox armour and wear plate applications
ardox steel is widely known for being one
Hof the toughest, most abrasion-resistant steels
available on the market. Suitably designed to perform
in challenging environments, this particular metal
type is often utilised across heavy-duty sectors, such
as defence or construction. Armour and wear plates
are particularly valued in protecting equipment from
damaging impact, which requires them to be incredibly
robust and maintain a long lifespan. This guide delves
into the characteristics of Hardox steel and how it can
be applied across industries, along with the essential
role of advanced cutting technologies such as waterjet,
waterjet bevel, and laser bevel.
The unique traits of armour and wear
plate steel
The most defining property of steel, such as Hardox, is
just how remarkably strong it is. A material’s strength
can be determined by a Brinell hardness test, with
Hardox steel achieving between 400HB to over 600HB
with resistance to cracking and chipping, depending on
the grade type. In comparison to traditional steel,
which can achieve just over 400HB, brittleness can
come as a cost. This makes armour and wear plate
steel extremely versatile, withstanding abrasion from
the demands of mining or resisting ballistic impact with
ease. It also features exceptional formability and
welding characteristics, which allow for the steel to
be formed into complex shapes and achieve a wide
range of designs across various sectors.
However, this same strength also makes these steels
incredibly difficult, time-consuming, and expensive to
machine or weld post-cutting, especially with traditional
tools. Advanced profiling, such as waterjet,
waterjet bevel, and laser bevel, is critical in this
instance, allowing the material to be processed within
tight tolerances without causing distortion, cracking,
or hardening. Laser bevelling provides huge production
time and cost savings through weld prepped parts
arriving to site fabrication ready.
Key applications of Hardox Armour
and Wear Plate
Industrial and Heavy-Duty Sectors
Construction and Mining: Heavy use in the
bodies of trucks, crushers, hoppers, conveyor systems,
and any equipment that is frequently exposed to
consistent wear and impact.
Transport and Agriculture: This steel type offers
lightweight and resilient capabilities for trailers, containers,
ploughs, and any piece of equipment that is required
to reduce weight without compromising on durability.
The longevity of Hardox steel effectively reduces
downtime and the cost of replacement, which is
invaluable where operational efficiency is critical.
Additionally, waterjet and laser cutting beds can
deliver high precision with little post-processing. This
significantly cuts down the need for expensive machining
or welding preparation, which is particularly useful in
large-scale fabrication where material integrity is key.
If you’re looking for metal profiling that
maintains structural integrity and exceptional
finishes, then speak to a member of our
team today for a no-obligation quote:

Deephole Drilling

BTA Drilling: Brazed
Versus Indexable Tooling
D eep hole drilling applications can be
approached in several ways, but one
of the most effective methods is often BTA
drilling. BTA stands for Boring and Trepanning
Association, although it is sometimes referred
to as STS or Single Tube System drilling. Unlike
gun drills or twist drills a BTA drill features
internal chip removal, which has advantages
in both productivity and hole quality.
The BTA drill head has multiple carbide cutting
edges and guide pads mounted to it. Open
spaces are designed into the head for chip
removal, and chips are evacuated through
the drill tube the head is threaded onto.
Pressurized coolant surrounds the drill head in
operation, and is key to forcing chips through
the head and out the drill tube. This method of
chip evacuation allows for a very clean and
reliable process with excellent surface finish
and high drill feed rates – typically 5-7 times
faster than gundrilling at the same diameter.
No peck cycles or feed interruptions are
needed, resulting in reduced machine time
while drilling extended depth-to-diameter
ratios even greater than 40:1.
BTA drills are generally available in two
forms: brazed or indexable; and tool selection
is dependent upon several factors. As the
name implies, brazed tools involve brazing
a carbide insert and guide pads onto a steel
body, while indexable BTA drilling tools have
carbide inserts either directly mounted to the
head with a retention screw or seated in a
cartridge that is mounted to the tool.
Hole diameter is the initial consideration
when determining whether to use brazed or
indexable BTA drills. For small hole diameters
– generally 12 to 20mm in diameter – brazed
tools are often the first choice as it’s difficult to
make small inserts and screws strong enough to
withstand the torque and forces of BTA drilling.
(Manufacturers of BTA drilling tools continue to
make improvements in indexable BTA heads as
small as 8mm in diameter, however).
Brazed tools offer extremely close tolerances
and excellent surface finish as the insert and
guide pads are mounted and then ground
to the specified diameter, providing almost
perfect concentricity and cylindricity. Ease
of use is also a benefit – simply attach the
head to the drill tube and discard it when it
has dulled or failed. If you experience a tool
failure, the investment in drill head isn’t as
costly as repairing or replacing an indexable
drill head. Finally, an indexable BTA head
can only be as accurate as the tolerance of
the inserts themselves; but a brazed head has
been ground to a very precise tolerance from
the manufacturer.
By contrast, hole diameters starting at
approximately 20mm favor indexable tools,
primarily for economic reasons. Replacing
larger diameter brazed tools is expensive,
whereas indexing an insert and guide pads
gives an easy extension on the tool’s life.
Indexable insert manufacturers also offer an
exhaustive range of carbide grades, coatings
and chip breakers for application-specific
advantages.
The placement of the indexable inserts on
BTA drill head varies by diameter and by
manufacturer, and can include one or multiple
inserts mounted directly to the head or set in a
heat-treated cartridge, which is then mounted
to the head. Guide pads are typically mounted
the head to counter the drilling forces and
burnish the hole during drilling. Indexing, or
rotating, a direct-mounted insert is as simple
as loosening the retaining screw and turning
the insert to expose a fresh cutting edge. If
the insert and pocket were made with tight
tolerances, your cutting diameter should
remain reasonably consistent.
Cartridge-mounted inserts, however, typically
incorporate a shim or other adjustment system
to allow for a much more precise diameter
setting after indexing inserts and guide
pads. This process does require additional
equipment, however, such as a micrometer
and stand or tool presetter – as well as the
skills needed to accurately make the necessary
adjustments.
Whether you select brazed or indexable BTA
drills for your deep hole drilling application,
you will be rewarded with high feed rates
and process reliability, along with minimal
centerline deviation and excellent hole quality.

Driving tyre testing up a gear
n the competitive world of tyre manufacturing, staying
Iahead of the curve requires innovative solutions that
provide detailed insights into tyre performance.
One of our customers, a leading tyre manufacturer,
has significantly accelerated their product development
process by leveraging the advanced capabilities of the
XSensor Tyre Pressure Mapping System. This cuttingedge
technology enables dynamic tyre testing, offering
invaluable data that conventional methods simply
cannot match.
The challenge
Our customer needed to collect tyre footprint data
in a dynamic environment at speeds up to 80km/h.
While they had been successfully using the XSensor
Tyre Pressure Mapping System since 2014 for static
measurements, the challenge was to capture data
under real-world driving conditions. Traditional
methods, such as driving over a glass plate with a
high-speed camera underneath, provided images
but lacked the detailed pressure and load distribution
data necessary for comprehensive analysis.
The solution: XSensor Dynamic Tyre
Pressure Mapping System
The XSensor Dynamic Tyre Pressure Mapping
System offers a portable and repeatable method for
recording tyre footprints at speeds up to 140km/h
(86mph). This system collects pressure distribution
data frame by frame as the vehicle passes over the
sensor, providing a wealth of information that can
be saved, replayed, analysed, and exported in
various formats.
System components
1) Sensor: Measuring 40.6 x 40.6cm with over
65,500 sensor points, capturing data at 450 frames
per second and up to 206Nm/cm² (300psi).
2) Sensor Packs: Four packs that scan the sensor
and connect to a high-speed data logger.
3) High-Speed Data Logger: Saves data to an
SD card.
4) Movement Sensor: Triggers the data logger to
start collecting data.
5) HS Pro V8 Software: A comprehensive
software package for live viewing, data analysis,
and export of numeric data, AVI files, and images.
Testing process
The tests were conducted over two days, with dry runs on
the first day and wet runs on the second. The goal was to
measure a current production tyre, a prototype tyre, and
a competitor’s tyre at three different inflation pressures
(100%, 75%, and 50% of normal inflation pressure) and
two speeds (40km/h and 80km/h). Each test run was
repeated to ensure accuracy and repeatability. See the
short video below, showing the two tests in slow motion.
Dynamic tyre testing in action – watch video
The video shows two consecutive tests – the XSensor
system collects pressure distribution data frame by
frame as the vehicle passes over the sensor: https://
youtu.be/hqXknDb3BlI?feature=shared
Key findings
The dynamic testing provided detailed insights into
how tyres perform under various conditions:
■ Load and speed: The system captured how the
tyre footprint changes shape under dynamic load
at different inflation pressures.
■ Pressure distribution: It measured the pressure
and force generated, offering a clear picture of
performance under different scenarios.
■ Water clearance: The wet tests highlighted the
effectiveness of different tread patterns in clearing
water, with visual evidence of water forming a
bow wave at lower inflation pressures.
Force Measurements
Benefits
The XSensor system offers several advantages:
■ Enhanced understanding: Manufacturers gain
a deeper understanding of tyre performance under
a wide range of conditions.
■ Informed development: Data-driven insights
enable informed decisions on changes to tyre
dimensions, compound, sidewall rigidity, and
tread patterns.
■ Cost and time efficiency: The ability to
conduct tests quickly and repeatedly speeds up
product development and reduces costs.
Conclusion
The XSensor Dynamic Tyre Pressure Mapping
System is a game-changer for tyre manufacturers,
providing unparalleled insights that drive innovation
and improve product performance. By adopting

Pressure mapping: Transforming helmet
impact testing for manufacturers
hen it comes to head protection, the stakes
Wcouldn’t be higher. Traditional helmet testing
methods – using drop tests and accelerometers –
measure peak acceleration forces during an impact.
While this provides valuable safety data, it doesn’t
reveal how those forces are distributed across the
head. A helmet might pass certification while still
allowing dangerous localised pressure ‘hot spots’
that increase the risk of injury.
This is where pressure mapping comes in. By
capturing detailed pressure distribution inside the
helmet during impact, manufacturers gain a deeper
understanding of how their designs perform – far
beyond the limits of standard testing.
Going beyond traditional testing
Conventional certification standards for helmets – whether
bicycle or motorcycle – focus on criteria such as peak
headform acceleration, chinstrap strength, penetration
resistance, and roll-off stability. While effective, these
tests often provide only part of the picture.
Pressure mapping, using systems such as the
XSensor High Speed (HS) Impact System combined
with thin, conformable sensor arrays, allows
engineers to measure:
■ Peak and mean pressure across the
headform surface.
■ Contact area and movement of high-pressure zones.
■ Pressure gradients, which can indicate areas
of concentrated load.
■ Pressure-time integrals, showing cumulative
load during impact.
Testing Bicycle vs Motorcycle Helmets
Bicycle Helmets
Standards such as CPSC (USA), EN 1078 (Europe),
and AS/NZS 2063 (Australia/New Zealand) require
impact testing at lower velocities (around 5–6 m/s).
Tests include drop impacts onto flat, hemispherical, or
kerbstone anvils, as well as retention and roll-off checks.
Motorcycle Helmets
Motorcycle helmets are subject to more demanding
standards, including DOT FMVSS 218 (USA), ECE 22.06
(Europe and beyond), Snell M2020, and JIS T 8133
(Japan). These involve higher-energy impacts (7–8 m/s),
penetration tests, multiple impact sites, rotational impact
studies, and environmental conditioning (hot, cold, wet).
Global standards snapshot
Helmet manufacturers face a wide landscape of
safety regulations:
■ CPSC (USA): Mandatory for all bicycle helmets
sold in the U.S.
■ EN 1078 (Europe): Covers bicycles,
skateboards, and roller skates.
■ AS/NZS 2063 (Australia/NZ): Generally
more stringent.
■ DOT FMVSS 218 (USA): Self-certified
motorcycle helmet standard.
■ ECE 22.06 (Europe/International): Includes
oblique/rotational testing.
■ Snell Standards (Voluntary): Stricter impact
and penetration criteria.
■ FIM Racing Homologation: For professional
racing, includes advanced rotational and
environmental tests.
Why Manufacturers Should Adopt Pressure
Mapping
For helmet makers, the benefits are clear:
■ Better product differentiation through
enhanced safety and comfort.
■ Faster R&D cycles, with accurate data guiding
design refinements.
■ Improved confidence when validating helmets
against global standards.
■ Insight into rotational and localised impact
behaviour that traditional methods cannot provide.

Compliance Solutions
SMARTER
COMPLIANCE
SOLUTIONS
heckedSafe is a software company based in
CBurnley, Lancashire and for over 10 years has
provided simple and inexpensive compliance solutions
to a range of different industries; from transport and
logistics; to construction and plumbing.
Founded in 2014, CheckedSafe was developed
with the goal to simplify compliance, making it
straightforward and affordable. Recognising tight
margins and confusing legal jargon can disrupt the
success of transport firms, CheckedSafe has been
praised for prioritising simplicity in its solutions.
The main role of CheckedSafe is to make compliance
simple, digital and cost-effective for businesses that
manage vehicles, drivers and workplace safety.
All services are fully integrated into one easy-to-use
management portal, helping businesses improve
safety, reduce risk, cut admin costs and stay
compliant with industry regulations.
The company’s award-winning vehicle compliance
system is designed for all types of fleets and is
complete with digitised vehicle defect reporting
allowing drivers to carry out and report on their
vehicle checks directly from their smartphone.
Compatible with iOS and Android systems, its app
features an intuitive, user-friendly interface, allowing
drivers to conduct vehicle walk-around checks with
ease. The reporting portal also enables users to access
detailed maintenance reports and view comprehensive
insights for all their vehicles in one convenient
location. Full integration with the DVSA Earned
Recognition Scheme, means users can also record
KPIs, as well as regularly share their reports directly
with the DVSA.
CheckedSafe also offers a driving license verification
service. Using innovative Optical Character
Recognition technology, with an accuracy rate of over
95%, CheckedSafe is able to verify licences directly
with the DVLA to confirm licence types and any
endorsements within seconds.
Drivers can simply log in to the app and submit
a driving license check, without the need to be
physically present. Licence verification is integrated
into CheckedSafe’s vehicle compliance platform and
this straightforward setup allows users to perform
checks quickly and efficiently, ensuring compliance
without hassle.
The company’s LoneWorking App allows users to
stay connected with their solo workers, no matter
where they’re located. The app is designed to
proactively protect workers and enables quick
response in emergencies. Critical information,
including the worker’s current location and contact
details, is sent instantly allowing users to verify the
alert and send help directly if necessary.
Workers can also confirm their welfare status
independently and the app’s motion-sensor feature
can detect if a lone worker has been inactive for
an extended period or has experienced a fall. This
customisable feature offers a critical safety net for
workers in high-risk situations.
CheckedSafe also offers dynamic risk assessments.
Its real-time smartphone app, designed for on-site,
actionable insights, can easily identify hazards,
assess risk, take action and review reports. Immediate
notifications and group messaging ensures teams
are always informed, allowing for quick action to
mitigate risks.
All data is securely stored and becomes tamper-proof
once submitted, guaranteeing reliability, compliance
and security. CheckedSafe’s close-call feature also
allows team members to report near-misses directly
through the app. Promoting safety awareness and
helping to identify training opportunities for continuous
improvement.
Compared to competitors CheckedSafe’s unique
edge comes from its tiered pricing system. Users
can customise the service they get from CheckedSafe.
Only paying for what they use. For example, the
company’s famed vehicle compliance service costs
only £1 per vehicle, per week; meaning clients can
scale effectively, ensuring their compliance in line
with their growth.
For its licence checking, CheckedSafe’s celebrated
simplicity is further bolstered by its pricing structure.
Usually, clients can expect to pay set up fees,
management costs and ‘credits’ for license checks,
but CheckedSafe is a pay as you go subscription
model meaning users only pay for what they need.
This tiered system combined with the company’s focus
on simplicity is paying off for CheckedSafe. Thousands
of companies streamline their safety and compliance
processes through its software and over 150,000
individual users throughout the UK and Europe rely
on the company’s compliance solutions every day.
CheckedSafe continues to expand and innovate its
offering in the market. Recently the company launched
its GB Domestic Hours App, the only company in the
UK to digitise this service. The new app allows users
to easily comply with GB Domestic Hours legislation
and the Working Time Directive by simplifying
record-keeping with CheckedSafe’s innovative,
digital working hours log system.
As CheckedSafe looks to the future it plans to continue
growth via innovation. The company releases three,
free weekly updates and hopes to build on this,
improving its services and providing further value
to clients.
CheckedSafe’s dedication to simplicity means users
can trust in its transparent and legitimate records of
activity. With over one billion individual data points
collected since CheckedSafe launched, the company
has built a reputation for precise and reliable
compliance data, which is helping businesses across
the UK reach their full potential and grow alongside
this innovative company.

Waterproofing, Fireproofing & Soundproofing
High-quality airtightness products at
unbeatable prices
ynergie is a wholesale distribution company,
Sproviding airtightness products into the construction
industry. With over 30 years of experience operating
in the construction sector, Synergie have built a
reputation for top quality products, attention to
detail and impressive customer service.
or solvents in construction or installation. This
sustainability also extends to the overall buildings
CO 2
emissions, as increased airtightness in
buildings helps to lower energy usage and
supports the building in attaining good Building
Energy Rating (BER).
The company offers a comprehensive range of wind
tightness membranes, airtight membranes, airtight tapes,
sealants and other products for achieving optimum
rain tightness, wind tightness and airtightness results.
All its products are manufactured in Germany to the
highest standards by manufacturers with over 20 years
of experience in the development of breathable roofing
membranes, airtightness membranes, airtightness
window and connection tape, adhesives and primer.
Especially celebrated is the company’s Synergie Sd
Variable Airtightness Membrane and Vapour Control
Layer. This product has the ability to change its water
vapour performance (SD value). The membrane
becomes more diffusion open depending on the
relative humidity (RH) in the area. In the colder,
winter months, the micropores of the membrane stay
diffusion tight, preventing vapour from the warm
interior of the building diffusing into the timber roof
or wall structure, or insulated layer. However, in the
summer months, the micropores of the membrane
open, allowing any vapour or moisture trapped in the
insulated material to escape back into the building
interior and ventilate naturally. In the long run, over
a few years, this ability to act as a barrier in winter
and a breathable membrane in summer, helps to
protect the building from structural damage caused
by excessive moisture trapped in the building fabric.
The Synergie Sd Variable membrane is ideally
suited to flat roof make-ups which are not adequately
ventilated or diffusion tight towards the outside.
The Sd Variable membrane is also suitable in new
buildings where excessive moisture accumulation has
occurred during the initial construction phase of the
building process where timber elements and thermal
insulation have suffered an unplanned wetting.
The Synergie airtightness system carries several
benefits for clients. Firstly the removal of draughts
helps to cut heating bills, prevents condensation and
protects and improves the performance of thermal
insulation. The effective use of Synergie products
also helps to protect against mould development and
allows ventilation systems to work more efficiently.
Synergie’s airtightness products are also
environmentally friendly. Using no harmful toxins
With these products being used extensively in both
residential and commercial construction projects,
the company carries a large range to cater for all
possible scenarios on a building project in traditional
masonry construction, timber frame construction,
steel frame construction and modular build.
Building companies of all sizes use Synergie to
achieve national building code standards and to
build energy efficient and passive buildings to the
highest of standards. All Synergie’s products are
built in line with European harmonised standards for
energy saving; as well as carry CE Markings, where
required, under the Construction Products Regulation.
Beyond providing the highest quality products,
certified across Europe; Synergie has also garnered
a reputation for impeccable customer service. Its
long tenure in the industry means the company has
a wealth of experience with a variety of different
products and the projects they could be used in.
Utilising this bank of knowledge allows Syngerie to
offer bespoke advice to clients and point them in the
right direction when it comes to airtightness.

Alarm Systems Company of Choice
Smarter safety, simplified: Fircroft Technologies’
ASYRA Wireless Lockdown Alarm System
ith more than 30 years of expertise in fire and
Wsafety signalling, Fircroft Technologies Ltd has
established itself as a UK leader in the design and
manufacture of audible and visual alarm systems.
Based in South Wales, the company delivers both its
own branded solutions and bespoke OEM designs,
combining innovation, reliability, and sustainability in
every product it produces.
In a world where safety demands
are evolving faster than ever,
Fircroft Technologies is
meeting the challenge headon
with a new generation of
wireless alarm solutions.
At the heart of Fircroft’s
reputation is its commitment
to technical excellence. Its
products are designed and
manufactured to the highest
standards, with many certified
to EN54 specifications for fire
safety. Their flagship innovation, the
ASYRA Wireless System, demonstrates
this expertise in action – a dual-channel,
high-integrity wireless alarm platform that provides
dedicated lockdown, fire, and industrial safety
solutions without the need for cabling or expensive
control panels. The ASYRA Wireless System, is
setting new standards for lockdown and emergency
alert applications for construction sites and
temporary buildings.
Dedicated Lockdown Security –
Without the complexity
At the heart of Fircroft’s current focus is the
Lockdown Alarm version of the ASYRA Wireless
System – a dedicated solution purpose-built for
rapid, secure lockdown signalling. Unlike systems
that rely on existing infrastructure, ASYRA operates
as a standalone network, making it fully resilient,
hacker-proof, and independent from other building
systems. Its wireless design means there’s no
need for cabling, enabling installation over a single
weekend – a huge advantage for live sites such as
schools or operational facilities where disruption
must be minimised. The result is a reliable, easy-todeploy
system that enhances on-site safety without
compromise.
Performance and sustainability hand in hand
ASYRA’s high-output signalling technology allows
large areas to be covered with fewer devices,
cutting material use and reducing
environmental impact. Systems can
scale from just two devices to 254
units, with coverage spanning up
to 2km in diameter – ideal for
large campuses, multibuilding
sites, and
open construction
environments.
Seamlessly
linking
systems
together can
provide even
larger system
solutions.
Powered by standard AA and
CR123 batteries with lifespans
of up to four years, the system is
operated by using a mobile phone app
allowing for easy detailed reporting and
routine status monitoring. This streamlined
approach delivers significant savings in both
cost and maintenance, without sacrificing reliability
or system integrity.
Monitoring, integration and control made simple
ASYRA’s extensive fault monitoring ensures
continuous system oversight, offering real-time
reassurance that your network is always fully
operational. Thanks to universal I/O modules, the
system can be easily integrated with existing fire
or security systems if required – providing flexible
options for both standalone and hybrid applications.
For even greater convenience, the ASYRA Android
App allows users to check system status and review
event logs directly from a smartphone, eliminating
the need for expensive control panels and offering a
user-friendly interface for maintenance teams.
A complete wireless safety platform
The full ASYRA Wireless product range includes
Manual Call Points, Detectors, I/O and Fault Modules,
Sounders, and Visual Alarm Devices (VADs) – all
designed to work seamlessly together within one
cohesive system. Beyond lockdown protection,
ASYRA also supports emergency and medical alert
functions, ensuring rapid communication in any
critical situation.
Partnering for safer sites
Fircroft Technologies understands that every site
is different. That’s why they encourage customers
to discuss their specific requirements directly –
whether for a full turnkey installation or a project
managed through an approved local contractor.
Fircroft’s team provides full technical
support, ensuring the same high
standards of reliability
and performance regardless
of who installs the system.
By combining British
manufacturing quality,
cutting-edge wireless
technology, and
decades of specialist
expertise, Fircroft
Technologies continues
to set new standards in
safety system design –
making workplaces, schools,
and public spaces safer,
smarter, and more sustainable.

SIMONBOX: Revolutionising
electrical installations
he SIMONBOX IP66 exemplifies
Toutstanding quality and
innovation, setting a new standard
in the industry by addressing the
design challenge of making a
waterproof floor outlet which is easy
to access and easy to use.
Designed for use in hard floor
areas which require occasional
power, data connection, and an IP
protection rating, the SIMONBOX
IP66 plays a significant role in the
advancement of electrical solutions.
For example, its ease of use is
remarkable. There are no lids to
unscrew or extra parts to assemble.
Users simply pop open the lid using
the standard slide or the Allen key
security mechanism. Inside, the
outlet can be fitted with either a
UK 13amp or 5amp socket. When
in use, the outlet meets the IP20
standard, and when closed, it
achieves IP66 protection.
The SIMONBOX is available in
two finishes: brushed stainless steel
and brass. Users have the option
of selecting waterproof sockets,
with choices for a flush floor or a
trimmed box finish. Depending on
the floor type, there are two back
box options: one for screed floors
and another for raised or suspended
floors.
When installed in a concrete floor,
the SIMONBOX is designed to sit
flush with the surrounding surface.
For raised floor installations,
commonly used in decking projects,
the SIMONBOX sits slightly elevated
to prevent water pooling around
it. Internally, the back box features
a self-drain opening for added
protection.

This is the ideal of recycling. It’s a closed loop.
All the plastic products we use as consumers should
be capable of recycling indefinitely making for a
sustainable future for our children and a cleaner less
toxic environment.
In some cases we also reuse rather than recycle.
For example, we have a Recycled Plastic
Compost Tumbler/Compost Bin – appropriately
named, ‘The Compost Creator.’ For this we reuse
a food grade plastic drum previously used to transport
food products.
Reuse is vastly superior to simply recycling
There is no significant consumption of energy, as there
is no manufacturing process involving heavy use of
energy. We just drill a few holes in the
drum and clean it up as best we can.
Both recycling plastic as well as
reusing it keeps large amounts of plastic waste out of
expensive and now difficult to find landfill.
This results in a lower carbon footprint and reduced
human contribution to global warming and climate
change.
Recycled Mixed Plastic Lumber, recycled HDPE and
recycled polystyrene (which is the primary waste
plastic in our recycled plastic wood or recycled plastic
timber) are what we make all our products out of.
These, often brightly coloured, Recycled plastic
products are extremely durable and attractive.
They will maintain their appearance for many years
to come.
Our highly acclaimed Compost Tumbler, or
Compost Bin, Raised Beds, Garden Planters,
2 and 3 Seater Garden Benches, Sports
Benches, Play Dens, and other Outdoor
Classroom products are not flimsy and light, but
robust and solid enough not to blow away in a gale.

service, leveraging their military engineering
experience. It quickly evolved into a leading
manufacturer of asphalt and bitumen equipment,
as well as civil engineering and highway
maintenance machinery.
Incorporated in 1961, the company was named
after their father William John Horrod Snr, whose
financial support made it possible. Over the years,
it remained a family business, with younger brothers

company, with third-generation apprenticing to
carry on the legacy.
For 75 years, W J Horrod Ltd has been at the

word at Horrods today, as many of the
larger products have moving parts using
LPG Propane Gas or electric elements,
and are heating vessels that
produce hot materials.
Working alongside AYM,
Horrods takes safeguarding
very seriously, prioritising safety
alongside quality. Every product

Service Sealing Solutions Ltd –
suppliers of DOYMA products
Service Sealing Solutions Ltd are the sole UK distributor of DOYMA
products. Wherever services are installed through walls, ceilings or
floors, penetrating water may cause damage to buildings. Lack of
attention to the points of entry of pipes and cables into the building
can have serious results: damp cellars, equipment damaged by
water ingress and high repair costs. Service sealing systems ensure
professional and perfect pipe sealing, thus presenting excellent
preventative measures against structural damage. The very best in
German engineering is used to seal penetration points to the wall
to permanently prevent any infiltration of gases and water into the
building, and the duct sealing systems are guaranteed for 25 years.

Industrial Gas Cleaning & Thermal Systems Odour
ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd cleans up
he ERG group has over 40 years’ experience
Tand operates through three divisions. The
powerhouse of the group is the first of these, ERG
(Air Pollution Control) Ltd. This division has highly
qualified and experienced teams of chemical,
mechanical and electrical engineers who,
together with project managers and procurement
professionals, design and supply bespoke gas
scrubbing systems and odour control plants to
meet their clients’ requirements.
ERG solves the full spectrum of gas cleaning
challenges facing its clients; whether it is a
requirement to remove foul odours from air
under ambient conditions prior to release into
the atmosphere, right up to scrubbing streams
of process gasses at high temperatures, high
pressures, or in explosive environments to remove
toxic or aggressive pollutants. The level of technical
sophistication and bespoke engineering content
in each project is specific to the clients’ needs,
with industrial applications typically demanding
the highest level.
The commercial driver leading clients to invest in ERG’s
systems might be a pressing requirement to comply
with government regulations or with the emission limits
set in an operating licence issued by an appropriate
agency. For other clients, ERG’s expertise is often
sought to clean up gas streams that form an integral
part of the client’s production process. For example, in
the green energy sector ERG’s systems purify biogas
or syngas that they have generated, so that the client’s
process runs more efficiently with lower pollution
levels. In some cases, ERG’s gas cleaning systems
can even generate by-products, which become
value added saleable side-streams.
Based in West Sussex, ERG has grown its business
strongly over the years to build up a global sales
network and client base.
An office in Jordan services ERG’s business
throughout the Middle East region, and is fully
staffed with design engineers, project managers
and local sales managers. A satellite sales office
in Dubai completes the Middle East structure.
Finally, the group includes ERG APC Maintenance
Ltd. This division’s mission is to provide servicing
and maintenance support to customers throughout
the lifetime of their air pollution control system.
Service can be provided under contract to include
a routine preventative maintenance servicing
schedule designed to maintain system performance.
Alternatively, maintenance can be provided on an
ad hoc basis as and when required.
ERG (Plastic Fabrication) Ltd is the manufacturing
division for the group and specialises in the
high-quality custom fabrication of tanks, vessels,
pipework and ducting from GRP and composite
plastic materials, and which are used in the
systems designed by ERG (Air Pollution Control).
ERG (Plastic Fabrication) Ltd also welcomes
commissions direct from 3rd party customers. It
has a vast arsenal of services to offer clients, and
has specialist experience in manufacturing using
a wide range of plastic materials including uPVC,
cPVC, Polypropylene, PVDF, and other speciality
plastics for harsh environments such as ECTFE.
All three-company divisions are now based in
superb new purpose-built office and factory facilities
in West Sussex, which were completed in 2021.
Having all divisions on the same site significantly
enhances working efficiency, design quality,
production quality, and production capacity.

Heating & Cooling Systems Company of Choice
How ESS is
transforming
commercial heating
and cooling
n this issue of Industrial Solutions, we are pleased
Ito feature ESS Air Con as our Heating & Cooling
Systems Company of Choice.
Established in 2000, ESS has evolved from a specialist
HVAC distributor into the UK’s leading supplier of
commercial heat pump systems. Partnering with global
brands such as Samsung and Panasonic, alongside
innovative manufacturers including Maxa and Volta,
ESS delivers tailored, high-performance solutions
to meet the complex needs of modern commercial
environments.
The demand for heat pumps across commercial and
industrial sectors continues to accelerate, driven by
the global push toward decarbonisation and net zero
targets. In both the UK and Europe, government policy
and corporate sustainability commitments are reshaping
the heating landscape. As organisations transition
away from gas and other fossil-fuel systems, ESS
stands at the forefront – providing efficient, low-carbon
alternatives that enable businesses to reduce emissions,
cut operating costs, and future-proof their operations.
Over recent months, ESS has intensified its focus
on deploying large-scale heat pump systems for
commercial and industrial properties – including
offices, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities.
With a deep understanding of the operational
demands and environmental challenges unique
to these sectors, ESS helps organisations enhance
building energy performance and transition seamlessly
to low-carbon heat pump technology. In doing so, the
company enables clients to cut energy costs, improve
efficiency, and meet their ESG and sustainability
commitments.
In the industrial and logistics sectors, the shift is
already underway. Businesses operating lowtemperature
industrial processes, distribution
centres, and temperature-controlled warehouses are
increasingly investing in large heat pump systems –
achieving measurable gains in energy efficiency, longterm
cost reduction, and carbon footprint reduction.
Maxa Heat Pumps represent one of ESS’s most
recent strategic partnerships, bringing cutting-edge
heating and cooling technology from Italy to the UK.
Manufactured by the Ferroli Group, Maxa products
are imported and distributed across the UK, offering
industrial, commercial, and residential clients highperformance
climate control solutions.
Founded in 1992 by Luciano Tredicesimo Ferroli,
the company has grown into one of Italy’s top five
heat pump manufacturers and a leading player in
the domestic air conditioning sector. Today, Maxa
is recognised globally for its expertise in residential,
commercial, and industrial air conditioning solutions.
At the core of Maxa’s mission are environmental
comfort, sustainable growth, and ecological
responsibility. These values underpin every stage of
their design and production processes, ensuring that
each system delivers efficiency, reliability, and longterm
value.
Maxa’s versatile portfolio of heating and cooling
solutions can be applied across a wide range of
environments – from domestic homes and commercial
offices to public facilities – whether for new-build
projects or retrofits. With a comprehensive selection
of heat pumps, Maxa provides reliable, adaptable
solutions tailored to every installation requirement.
Through ESS, these advanced systems can be supplied
and installed wherever high-quality climate control
is needed – from cold, temperate environments to
tropical conditions – ensuring environmental comfort
and human wellbeing wherever they are deployed.
ESS is also recognised for its deep expertise and
extensive product knowledge across a wide range of
air source heat pumps and air conditioning systems.
Companies looking to transition to advanced heating
and cooling solutions often face the challenge of
sourcing skilled installers and maintenance engineers.
ESS recognises that integrating new systems into
commercial buildings – particularly older properties
– can be complex. That’s why the company invests
heavily in customer support and comprehensive
training programs.
A key challenge across the industry is the shortage
of qualified installers and technical expertise.
ESS addresses this through its ongoing installer
training programs for heat pumps, equipping
professionals with the skills needed to optimise
system performance. By partnering with businesses,
ESS ensures that organisations get the maximum
efficiency and reliability from their heating and
air conditioning systems.
Its highly skilled technical team supports both complex
industrial installations and standard commercial
applications, ensuring businesses benefit from
seamless access to the latest high-performance,
energy-efficient technologies. Through strong
partnerships with leading brands such as Maxa,
ESS consistently delivers cutting-edge solutions to
the UK market.
Beyond supply, ESS provides end-to-end support,
including pre-sales consultations, expert system
design guidance, comprehensive after-sales technical
assistance, and some of the industry’s most respected
ongoing training programs. With a strong commitment
to low-carbon and eco-friendly solutions, ESS is
helping businesses – one heat pump at a time –
to achieve and exceed their net zero and
ESG objectives.

DOYMA have been developing
conduits cast into concrete without the
sleeves. They are supplied and ready to
use, requiring no site preparation work
prior to installation. With options such
as KE Socketless service conduits, KG
Wall Ducts and Floor Ducts, together
with KG Twin Sockets for installation in
pump sumps, HKD products are ideal for
situations where suitability for thin-walled
concrete structures is vital.

MANUFACTURERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF MACHINE KNIVES TO ALL INDUSTRIES
Maintenance in Balance
CMServices Global Ltd: At
the heart of Industry 5.0
or many industries, whilst Industry 4.0 is still
Fdominating with advancements in automation,
smart systems, robotics, big data analytics, AI, machine
learning and of course, the Internet of Things (IoT),
the focus for others is already on Industry 5.0. Defined
by the European Union as ‘placing the wellbeing of
the worker at the centre of the production process and
using new technologies to provide prosperity beyond
jobs and growth while respecting the production limits
of the planet.’ In short, we are shifting from economic
values to societal ones and embracing sustainability.
Condition monitoring is an important aspect of both
Industry 4.0 and 5.0 through the real-time tracking
of machine functionality but with the added bonus
of predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics
across a whole system.
AI now brings automated processing with faultless
accuracy, through seamless analysis of huge chunks of
data in real-time and identifying patterns proactively,
before a problem arises, such as pump cavitation. This
importantly allows on-site engineers to schedule checks
and repairs before a more costly machine failure or
malfunction occurs, later down the line, contributing
to the five Rs of the circular economy: reduce, reuse,
repair, refurbish and recycle.
CMServices Global Ltd is a market-leading
consultancy, offering AI condition monitoring to
diverse sectors from marine and offshore, automotive,
manufacturing, food and beverage, postal sorting
through to chemical, oil and gas. For decades, the
annual scheduling of manual maintenance has been
standard practice but with the advent of AI monitoring,
irregularities can be identified through early warning
prevention: smart analysis of sensor data and the
comparison to standard historical data.
The Maintenance in Balance (MiB) software service
from CMServices Global Ltd brings Machine Learning
and AI together to provide diagnostic support for
assets, through condition monitoring techniques that
identify irregularities and provide further diagnostic
guidance.
The MiB asset condition assessment software provides
a cutting-edge, integrated platform for foresighted ship
machinery maintenance and furthermore, drastically
reduces inspection and maintenance costs, up to £500
thousand per ship annually. Predictive fault monitoring
can decrease ship downtime from 7 to 1.5 days. With
existing shipping delays due to geopolitical conditions
in the Red Sea and Panama Canal, this is welcome
news for the shipping industry.
That’s not all: MiB helps shipping vessels meet
compliant seaworthy regulations, giving quality
assurance across the board. The real genius of MiB
is it supplies an extra layer of real-time prescriptive
maintenance outputs, based on accurate condition
and systems performance data and provides
next-level operational performance across safety,
regulatory, environmental and business areas.
With rising costs, the annual lifecycle costs of
operating one ship amounts to a staggering £60
million and a third of the annual budget is spent on
repair and maintenance, to keep ships buoyant and
operational. Research has found that as much as 60%
of all maintenance is in fact wholly unnecessary and
can even cause more issues going forward.
It’s no wonder then that MiB is in demand and when
we spoke to Simon, he said CMServices Global Ltd
was committed to ‘eight separate current pilot projects’
across cruise liners, container ships and oil and
gas industries, alongside a tender process in power
generation for three in Europe and two in the UK.

services, across any sector, please see the

MAINTENANCE IN BALANCE, THE ONLY SOFTWARE YOU’LL EVER NEED!
MiB is a product/service that builds in diagnostic support for multiple assets via Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
MiB incorporates the diagnostic knowledge of expert diagnosticians in the conventions of mature condition monitoring techniques and
aligns this with AI functionality to identify true outliers and then offer meaningful diagnostic advice.
As more assets are managed remotely and fewer onboard personnel are sufficiently experienced to deal with all scenarios, it is becoming
clear that a marriage of technology and experience is needed to balance the equation.
Objectives
Using our asset condition assessment software MIB, we will create an integrated software platform for undertaking prescriptive
maintenance on your ship’s machinery, structures, and auxiliary systems. This will be achieved by using data from existing condition
monitoring, diagnostic sensors and systems, the implementation of advanced predictive analytics and the integration of a maintenance
actions/prescription database.
Based upon advanced, artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning algorithms MIB will prescribe, the most appropriate maintenance strategy in
real-time for every asset under its control, based on the subtle but pre-alarm indications of emerging faults that will occur at a future time.
Specific objectives of MIB are to:
ä Establish the monitoring and maintenance needs of each vessel
ä Specify the software platform parameters based on each vessel’s requirements
ä Deploy our intelligent monitoring software module
ä Integrate the module into the MIB platform and provide routine updates to the crew
