you find enough people.

make reading and singing the siddur comfortable and
friendly.

review everything, and work on reading and singing
from the Siddur.

A Message From Cantor Carl Sayres
Dear Friends,
I’m writing this during the week that we read parashat Noah, the story of Noah and
the Ark. However, by the time you read this, you’ll probably be thinking about
Thanksgiving and Hanukkah.
It might not be obvious on the surface that Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and the story of
Noah all have something in common. But I think they do - they all call upon us as leaders
to create the world that we want to live in!
The story of Noah is actually a cautionary tale about leadership. God gave Noah two missions. First, he
had to save lives. Second, he had to rebuild the world. The first mission he accomplished well and he
offered thanks to God. As for the second mission, Noah failed miserably. He did not have a vision for
the world that needed to be created following the flood. Prior to the flood, the Torah calls him a
tzaddik tamim, a righteous man in his generation. But after the flood, he is reduced to an ish ha’adamah,
a man of the land. Noah could save the world from the flood, but he could not envision what a new
world should look like.
The parashah ends by introducing Abraham. And the rabbis focus on the comparison of the two men.
The midrash comments that while Noah might have been righteous compared to the evil people of his
time, he would have been insignificant in the age of Abraham. Abraham is the leader who brings a vision
of loving kindness to the world. It is Abraham that will set the stage for the rest of the human story.
Thanksgiving, likewise, is a story about leadership and vision for the future. Immigrants, fleeing authoritarianism,
wanted to build the world they dreamed about. Of course, that story is also complex, shadowed
by the suffering of those who were already here. But even as we hold those truths at the same
time, Thanksgiving reminds us of the power of gratitude and the responsibility that comes with freedom.
It compels us to keep building a more just and compassionate society.
Hanukkah is also a story of self-determination and renewal. The Maccabees fought not just for survival,
but for the right to be Jewish openly and joyfully. Their victory wasn’t just military, it was spiritual. They
rekindled the Menorah, and with it, the hope that darkness can never extinguish our faith.
The story of Noah calls on each of us to move from survival to renewal. To rebuild the world around
us with the faith that the flood is never the end of the story. So may we, like Abraham, like our founding
fathers, and like the Maccabees, be leaders who rebuild the world - one act of compassion, one
spark of faith, one candle at a time.
Cantor Carl H. Sayres

A Message From Rabbi Douglas Kohn
Dear Friends,
It is Fall. The lulls of summer and the urgency of the High Holy Days have
passed. Synagogue life gets busy with learning and growing activities of all types.
Here some highlights!
Synagogue Leadership Series – Jewish Life for All!
Every other Sunday, November 9-May 21, noon-1:30pm
Ever wonder how Jewish and synagogue life work? How we do Shabbat Services? How relations
with other religions are worked out? How and why we do various life-cycle moments –
from birth to death? How a synagogue governs itself and manages resources and obligations?
There are myriad facets to the Jewish community. This Series leisurely looks at the gamut of
synagogue leadership – but it is designed for anyone: the leader, the Jew in the Pew, and the non
-Jewish person. Understand the Jewish world, from how it works! Come to any of the sessions
you like! Kindly express interest to the Temple Office.
The Sacred Struggle: Jewish Responses to Trauma – Dealing with Tough Stuff
Two Tuesday evenings, November 11 & 18, 7:00-8:30pm
Illness, violence, natural disaster, family and communal turmoil…
Using the new CCAR Press book, The Sacred Struggle: Jewish Responses to Trauma, as our base,
we will look for common denominators in dealing with tough stuff. How does Jewish Tradition
promote resilience, emotional honesty, feeling pain and loss rather than anger and dismay, and
how do we engage one another in the moments which life bring us. Participants are encouraged
to acquire a copy of the book (see the Temple Office for information) , peruse it, and bring it to
each session.
Fun, Conversational Hebrew! An easy, Interactive Ulpan for Us!
Ten Tuesday evenings, December 2-February 3, 7:00-8:30pm
Most of us only encounter Hebrew through the prayerbook, or perhaps in Torah study. But, it
is a lively, engaging living language! And, it has unique structure, distinct from familiar Western
or Romance languages. And, it is OUR language, as Jews of the 21 st century when Israel is 75
years old and has rebuilt a once-dead conversational language. In this Ulpan – shared conversational
Hebrew learning – we will speak with one another in easy Hebrew, develop some basic
vocabulary, learn some grammatical structures and have fun! Materials will be provided. No prior
skill needed, except patience!
Looking forward to learning with YOU!
Rabbi Douglas Kohn
