If percussion players are limited, the most important parts to include are Snare Drum,
Slapstick/Triangle, and Tambourine.

Program Note
Dragonfly Dance was inspired by my young niece, who became mesmerized by a
dragonfly while we were at the park. Her fascination revealed a childlike innocence,
while I experienced a very different response to the insect. The music reflects this dual
perspective, shifting continually between two sound worlds: a clear, diatonic melody
that has a bright quality and restless chromatic gestures that suggest tension.

Note to Conductor
Throughout the piece you will notice that accidentals are written consistently rather
than using enharmonic spellings. Chromatic notation is notated with sharps or flats
according to an internal logic within each part, even if the enharmonic spelling might
have been more conventional in another context. For example, the trumpet part always
uses G-sharp and never A-flat.
This decision was made to preserve a single key signature (Bb major) across the entire
work and to support younger players who may be encountering these notes for the first
time.
To support instruction, a set of chromatic exercises is provided. The notation in each
exercise is drawn directly from the chromatic material in the score, so students practice
the same notes they will perform. Directors are encouraged to adapt articulations and
dynamics in these studies to best suit the needs of their ensemble.
