early focus 

for new 

council

Firefighters, of course. 

When Zalda and Ralph Keall 

arrived for their weekly 10am 

mahjong game they realised 

something was missing – 

Zalda’s cellphone. 

So they went back to their 

car to look for it. Not there. 

Had Zalda dropped it? But it 

wasn’t on the footpath or in the 

gutter, the only likely places it 

could be. But there was a drain 

close by. 

Zalda then recalled she had 

heard something when she got 

out of the car. 

“I had it (phone) sitting on 

my lap. I had heard a clunk,” 

she said. 

They looked in the drain but 

the discoloured water obscured 

what might be in it. And the 

grill covering the drain was 

firmly wedged in place. 

So there was only one option, 

given they desperately needed 

to find the phone with all of 

Zalda’s contacts stored on it: 

Call 111 and ask if the fire service 

could help. 

The emergency operator said 

they could not dispatch firefighters 

to look for a cellphone 

in a drain. It was hardly a life 

or death scenario, usually the 

benchmark for 111 calls. 

But the Lincoln fire station 

was only a short distance away 

from the mahjong venue in 

the restaurant at The Famous 

Grouse Hotel. So the operator 

contacted the station to see 

how they might be placed. 

Lincoln station officer Ollie 

Rutland-Sims weighed up 

the request. On the basis it 

was quiet on Monday last 

week, being a public holiday 

when most volunteers on call 

wouldn’t be working, the siren 

was sounded. 

“We’re a one-stop emergency 

service. It was a classic 

feel good story,” he told 

Selwyn Times. 

Firefighter Jayne Henare 

first used her hands to fish for 

the phone, before tools were 

employed to sweep deeper 

into the drain. After several 

attempts it came up amongst 

the muck, very dirty and wet, 

but still working. 

The Kealls said they 

were very grateful for the 

firefighters retrieving the 

phone – a huge relief, said 

Ralph. 

The countdown has started for 

the new council to deliver on its 

promise to lower rates. 

Mayor Lydia Gliddon and 

councillors were sworn in last 

week, and have a busy schedule 

between now and Christmas. 

Councillors will have a meeting 

every week, where they will 

learn about the workings of 

council. 

Gliddon will be directing 

council staff to provide councillors 

for potential rates rises 

options which they can consider 

over the Christmas/New 

Year break. 

"I want to deliver Annual Plan 

information before Christmas 

so they can take it away and 

digest it over the break, and we 

will dive back into the new year. 

"There will definitely be 

some numbers on the table. It 

depends on what we do and 

don’t want to do to form the 

number.” 

Under the previous council, 

the estimated rates rise 

for 2026/27 is 13.3%. This was 

calculated before water and 

wastewater were transferred to 

Selwyn Water Ltd. 

From next year there will be 

no water or wastewater charges 

as part of rates bills.

Community helps fund life-changing therapy 


Five-year-old Cole Tudehope is 

the only person in New Zealand 

– and one of about 60 people 

worldwide – diagnosed with the 

extremely rare, non-hereditary 

genetic disorder Witteveen-Kolk 

Syndrome (WITKOS). 

Now, thanks to growing community 

support, the Darfield 

boy and his family will fly to 

Brisbane on Friday to access lifechanging 

physical therapy. 

The disorder means Cole is 

non-verbal, though he makes 

many different sounds. He is 

unable to walk unaided but can 

crawl, and is mostly tube-fed 

through a mechanical pump 

that delivers food directly to his 

stomach. 

It took about seven months 

after his birth for a diagnosis 

to be made, requiring his DNA 

to be sent to the rare diseases 

center at Helsinki University 

Hospital. 

“Because it is so rare, they 

have only done two or three 

research studies, and they have 

very small sample sizes,” Cole’s 

mum Anna Sheen said. 

Sheen said the family gets 

some information from a private 

Facebook group for other families 

affected by the condition, but 

much of what they’ve learned 

has been through experience. 

“We just follow (Cole’s) lead 

basically, and Cole will be Cole,” 

she said. 

Most of Cole’s medical challenges 

have centred around 

respiratory issues, particularly 

when he’s sleeping.

“He can be on CPAP sometimes, 

which he hates because it is a 

mask over the nose and mouth.” 

Despite his challenges, Cole 

attends Annabel’s Educare kindergarten 

three part-days a week 

and is due to start at Darfield Primary 

School next year. 

With the support of a $12,500 

donation from the Malvern Lions 

and other fundraising efforts 

– including a clothing sale in Lincoln 

over the weekend – Cole will 

be able to receive another three 

weeks of intensive therapy at the 

NAPA (Neurological and Physical 

Abilitation) Centre in Brisbane. 

Sheen said the total cost of 

treatment and travel is about 

$30,000, all of which they have to 

raise themselves. 

She is hoping to see more support 

for families like theirs. 

“We have a physio allocated to 

us, but she can only see us every 

three or four months.” 

Sheen said she was amazed 

when they first travelled to Australia 

in May and saw the level of 

support families received there. 

“The families going to NAPA 

had everything paid for, and they 

were going three to five times a 

year.” 

She met several families 

who had previously lived in 

New Zealand but relocated to 

Australia full-time to access 

better support. 

“Hopefully, with more people 

talking about these things, 

change might happen.”

to work together on fire 

prevention over summer. In 

2024, a large vegetation fire 

near Kirwee was triggered by 

sparks from a train. KiwiRail 

has also started its summer 

vegetation management plan 

in Selwyn, starting with highrisk 

areas along the Midland 

Line between Rolleston and 

Darfield. Fire safety checks 

on locomotives are also under 

way, and strict rules in place 

around any works which could 

cause sparks. 

Waste-to-energy plant 

consents clarification 

It was reported in last week’s 

Selwyn Times (October 29) 

that Environment Canterbury 

had granted resource consent 

for the planned Ecogas 

waste-to-energy plant to be 

built in South Hornby. It 

has since been clarified that 

ECan granted a discharge 

to air consent only, with 

conditions including no 

offensive odours or airborne 

deposits outside the site. 

Christchurch City Council 

granted land use consent for 

the plant in 2024.

New route for popular Christmas parade

Roadworks on Gerald St means 

there will be a new route for 

Lincoln Christmas Parade and 

Market on December 13. 

Lincoln Community Christmas 

Parade Association vice 

president Fiona Watson said 

they were expecting about 

10,000 people to the annual 

event, which will run along a 

new circuit. 

The roadworks are the 

start of the new town centre 

upgrade. 

Parade floats will leave 

the Lincoln Event Centre at 

10.30am and head down Meijer 

Dr, North Belt, James St, then 

over the Liffey bridge to Kildare 

Tce and back along North Belt 

to finish on Meijer Dr. 

“It’s a slightly smaller circuit, 

so it will take about one hour to 

get around it,” she said. 

Roads will be closed from 

8.30am-12.30pm on Roblyn 

Pl, Liffey Pl, Kildare Tce and 

North Belt to accommodate the 

market and parade. Residents 

who live along the roads on the 

route will have limited access 

from 7-8.30am. 

Watson said there would be 

up to 70 floats, tractors and 

trailers in the parade. 

She said the organising 

committee have offered an 

incentive for new floats – $500 

is on offer for the best float, 

with $200 for second and $100 

for third. 

“To me that makes the magic 

of the parade, just seeing 

people’s inventiveness,” she 

said. 

There will be music and 

entertainment, clowns, bouncy 

castles and horse rides, along 

with old favourites like the vintage 

tractors, pipe and brass 

bands. 

The Lincoln Farmers Market 

on Gerald St will be running 

an elf trail for people to follow 

along to get down to the main 

Market and Father Christmas 

Grotto on Liffey Pl. 

Said Watson: “It’s a real local

New councillors steep learning

Gliddon has promised a singledigit 

rate rise for next year and is 

aware that the public pressure is 

on her to deliver it. 

“I am very cognisant that is 

what I’ve been elected to deliver.” 

Delivering the lower rates rise 

was also a factor in her choosing 

Brendan Shefford as deputy 

mayor. 

"It’s a pretty hard decision to 

make, and it had consumed me 

for a good portion of three weeks. 

I looked at what assistance I 

needed to make financial and 

business changes, and he is that 

person,” said Gliddon. Shefford’s 

term will run until December 

next year, after which there 

will be a review of whether he 

continues or someone else gets 

the job. 

The Annual Plan, which sets 

the rates rise, normally goes out 

for public consultation in April 

for sign-off in June, with new 

rates taking effect from July 1. 

When Selwyn Times asked 

councillors if they had three 

specific projects that could be 

cut to reduce rates, most did not 

want to commit to anything. 

Before being sworn in, 

councillors spent two days getting 

to know each other, learning 

about the council. 

"It was so nice just to have 

everyone in the room together. 

I walked away from that with a 

large level of comfort,” Gliddon 

said. 

The first day was spent 

learning what governance was 

with leadership specialist Giselle 

McLachlan. Day two 

was spent getting an overview of 

the different departments, which 

will be followed by deeper dives 

into different departments with 

public briefings. 

At the inaugural meeting, Kā 

Puna Springs Ward councillor 

Aaron McGlinchy was confirmed 

as chair of the finance and 

performance committee. 

In his role as chair, McGlinchy 

said he wants to focus on 

ensuring the council has a 

handle on the finances and 

that it is accessible and easy to 

understand for councillors and 

the public. 

"I certainly want to make the 

information easy to understand 

and digest.” 

McGlinchy said he wants 

to also get assurances from 

council staff the development 

contributions, which were falling 

short in some areas, are meeting 

the required levels. 

The committee’s first meeting is 

scheduled for December 3. 

At large councillors Samuel 

Wilshire, Tracey Macleod and 

Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward 

councillor Sophie McInnes will 

sit on the council's audit and 

risk committee, which is due to 

receive the annual report this 

month, which will show what 

the council spent during the 

2024/25 financial year. Other 

pre-election council committees, 

which covered climate change 

and sustainability, economic 

development, and housing and 

urban development, are not 

making a return at this stage. 

Gliddon said it made more 

sense to have everyone involved 

at the beginning. 

"The stuff that’s gone in those 

other committees can just come 

to (full) council.”

Big Red marches in as deputy

Brendan ‘Big Red’ Shefford 

from newbie councillor to 

deputy mayor. 

The former soldier turned 

successful real estate agent was 

elected to Ka Mania Rolleston 

Ward and will be Mayor Lydia 

Gliddon’s deputy until at least 

December next year. 

Gliddon picked Shefford for 

the role due to his business 

experience and straightforward 

nature. 

"Big Red brings with him a 

wealth of local knowledge. He is 

straightforward and isn't afraid 

to roll up his sleeves and get to 

work,” she said. 

Shefford, 45, grew up in 

Geraldine and joined the army 

straight out of high school. He 

was based at Waiouru and later 

Burnham. 

He bought his first home in 

Rolleston in 2004 after selling 

shares he had in Auckland 

Airport. He then bought two 

rental properties in Hornby. 

"I bought my first house at 22, 

second house at 23 and third 

house at 24 while I was in the 

army,” Shefford said. 

"A lot of people think I made 

my money in real estate, but I 

had been in the property game 

long before I came into real 

estate.” 

While in the army, he trained 

as a cook and did a tour in 

Suai, East Timor, in 2001 and in 

Bamyan province, Afghanistan, 

in 2005. 

He would cook for small

The food would vary from 

basic meals to fine dining for 

visiting dignitaries or high-level 

officers. 

"I forget how many times I

(Helen Clark) and the governor 

general.” 

The army was where he got 

the nickname ‘Big Red’ due to 

being tall and having ginger 

hair. 

When he left the army, he 

started his real estate career, 

buying Ray White Rolleston 

in 2008. It has expanded to 

have offices in West Melton, 

Lincoln and Prebbleton. He 

also owns Red Chilli Property 

Management which employs 

more than 50 staff. 

Shefford has always been 

interested in politics and, when 

he saw a couple of open spots in 

the Rolleston Ward, he decided 

to run for election. 

"I saw an opportunity to take 

some of the skills I’ve developed 

over the years from running a 

sustainable business.” 

He is also an unabashed 

Donald Trump fan. His election 

billboards took on the Make 

Selwyn Great Again, a play on 

Trump's slogan ‘Make America 

Great Again’. 

He said his political views 

would not come into the 

council. 

"A lot of people as a result of 

that know where I stand.” 

Shefford said he will back 

Gliddon, but he may not always 

tow the line. 

"If I have a strong position 

on something, I’ll let it be 

known. You should be able to 

say I don’t agree with that and 

move on.” 

Retired farmer’s comeback 

Danny thought his active days 

were behind him. Retired from 

farming due to dodgy knees and 

hips, he’d been watching his wife 

handle the calves and drive the 

tractor. 

“Great woman,” he says with a 

grin. 

Then the incident ‘that October’ 

happened. 

“I fell off my chair while she 

was docking lambs and broke my 

arm,” Danny recalls. “Couldn’t 

even hold a bottle of draught, let 

alone get the top off.” 

His wife’s response? “She 

couldn’t stop laughing.” 

When the cast finally came off, 

Danny’s arm was weaker than 

before. 

He began searching for 

something to help online. That’s 

when he discovered Koru FX, a

What happened next has 

become legend at Danny’s 

local golf club - just like Danny 

himself. 

“My golf handicap improved 

by four strokes in the first week,”

club thought I was on something 

illegal!” 

The improvement wasn’t just 

about golf scores. Danny found 

his confidence returning with

Word spread through the 

clubhouse. An elderly couple

His enthusiasm even extended 

to the local priest, pulling Danny

Danny roared. “He’d heard I had 

some magic potion.” 

Danny gave his blessing along 

with two bottles of Koru FX. The 

result? “The fella beat me at golf 

on Saturday.” 

Now back from an extended 

hunting and fishing trip 

(“Couldn’t do that before” he 

claims), Danny’s discovered 

what thousands of other New 

Zealanders have found – that

So far, about 800 people have 

registered, but the low number 

is not worrying Rogers. 

“The culture in New Zealand 

is to hold onto the last minute 

before buying tickets, but we are 

starting to see movement now.”

Diwali have apologised after 

a combination of delays and 

noise complaints led to the final 

act being cut short. 

The event at Lincoln Domain 

on Saturday was meant to run 

until 9pm with a fireworks 

finish, but organiser Surinder 

Tandon said technical 

difficulties meant some 

performances had to be moved 

until after the fireworks. 

Just before 10pm the 

Bhangra Fitness group from 

Christchurch was called 

on stage, but during their 

performance the music was 

turned down and eventually 

switched off due to noise 

complaints. 

“We wish to express 

our sincere apology to the 

performing groups who faced 

delays and disruptions during 

the final segment of the event. 

Despite our best efforts, several 

unavoidable factors led to loss 

of stage time and performance 

interruptions,” Tandon said. 

“A significant portion of 

stage time was lost due to the 

extended setup and sound 

checks required for live 

musical performances, as well 

as unforeseen technical issues 

with the sound system. 

“A few performing groups 

or their members arrived late 

to the stage for the scheduled 

slots, contributing further to the 

accumulated delay.” 

Council was unable to 

confirm how many complaints 

were made. 

The Bhangra group blamed 

the event’s disorganisation 

for the delays in a post on 

Facebook. 

“What was meant to be a 

joyful and vibrant celebration 

of Selwyn Diwali, a festival 

of lights. turned into a night 

of deep disappointment and 

disrespect for our entire team.” 

Tandon said it was the first 

time they had issues of this kind 

in several years of running the 

event. 

Despite that, he still believed 

the event was a success with 

about 10,000 attending.

The Upper Selwyn Huts’ 130th 

anniversary was marked by former 

bach owner, 96-year-old Betty 

Greenslade cutting the cake. 

The celebration came after the council 

decided in September to extend 

occupation at the settlement near Te 

Waihora/Lake Ellesmere by at least 

another 30 years. 

The settlement started in 1895. The 

Greenslade family has owned a bach 

there since 1959, but can trace its connection 

back to 1900, when William 

Hopkins – Betty’s grandfather – visited 

by horse and trap. The bach was bought 

by Betty’s mother Winfred. Betty owned 

the bach with her husband Doug from 

1969 until 2021 when it transferred to 

her son David. 

Selwyn Hut Owners Association member 

Kirrily Fea said they were planning 

to celebrate the huts’ milestone regardless 

of the outcome with the council, but 

the result made the day more special. 

“There are some older people with 

some great oral stories who wouldn’t be 

here at the 150th. 

“In the end, it was a really lovely day 

of closure for the community.” 

Fea said a lot of people dressed up in 

heritage clothes for the Labour weekend 

celebration. 

“A lot of people got involved, some 

went op shopping, some of them hired 

(costumes), it was amazing really.” 

Alongside the celebration, a book 

was created from Underground Overground 

archaeological consultancy’s 

report, which was prepared to provide 

evidence of the settlement’s historical 

significance as part of the residents’ 

battle with the council.

into the district’s libraries and possibly

New Council sworn in, ready to lead Selwyn 

The new Selwyn District Council has begun its 

three-year term with elected members sworn in 

and ready to lead. 

At the inaugural Council meeting on Wednesday (29 

October) Mayor Lydia Gliddon spoke about her hopes for 

the new triennium and delivering for the long-term future 

of Waikirikiri Selwyn. 

“It’s an absolute privilege to be elected here to serve 

our community. The conversations we’ve had with our 

communities now become the work we do for them. 

“We are beginning to set our direction. And soon it’s 

about getting on with it, making sure projects are 

delivered, costs are managed, and people see progress.” 

The meeting also saw the appointment of Kā Mānia 

Rolleston Ward Councillor Big Red Shefford as deputy 

mayor for a period of 13 months, until December 2026. 

“This gives us time as a Council to review the structure 

and make sure it is still serving the needs of our Council 

and community,” said Mayor Gliddon. 

“Big Red brings with him a wealth of local knowledge, he 

is straightforward and isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and 

get to work. 

“I look forward to his support to keep our council 

grounded as we modernise, focus on fiscal responsibility 

for our district but never lose sight of the people and 

places that make Selwyn home.” 

Mayor Gliddon oversaw her fellow councillors as they 

took the oath. Two returning councillors and eight new 

councillors were sworn in, joined by their families and 

supporters. 

“Each of us has been elected to bring our best 

judgement to the table,” said Mayor Gliddon. 

Selwyn is growing, changing, and thriving, our job is to 

make sure that growth remains sustainable, affordable, 

and fair, she said. 

“To the people of Selwyn: we hear you. To this council: 

let’s get to work.” 

Rezoning request for 

Weedons Road 

Further submissions are open on the application by 

Yoursection Ltd to rezone approximately 17.3 hectares of 

land at 1/487, 2/487, 9/487 and 10/487 Weedons Road, 

Rolleston from General Rural Zone to Medium Density 

Residential Zone (MRZ). 

The initial submission period closed on 15 October and 

the Council received seven submissions. 

Further submissions can be made by anyone with an 

interest greater than the public in general (for example, 

if they own property that someone submitted to have 

rezoned), someone representing a public interest group, 

or the local authority. They must be limited to matters 

in support of, or in opposition to, an original submission 

made on V4. A summary of submissions and more 

information can be found at selwyn.govt.nz/V4.

This popular event will 

take place on the evening of 

Thursday 20th November at 

the Lincoln Event Centre. 

It has proved to be a successful 

and enjoyable event in 

previous years and once again

clothing items to be exchanged. 

People are encouraged to bring 

those clothes and shoes that we all 

have, unused in our cupboards, and 

drop them off at designated drop off 

points in Lincoln and Rolleston. The

Highland games return 

The pipes will call once again 

when the 14th Hororātā 

Highland Games return on 

Saturday for a celebration of 

Scottish culture with a uniquely 

Kiwi twist. 

Each year, more than 10,000 

people gather at Hororātā 

Domain to experience the 

colour, music, and excitement 

of Scotland being brought to 

life in Selwyn. 

“This isn’t the kind of event 

where you just stand back and 

watch,” said Cindy Driscoll 

from the Hororātā Community 

Trust, which runs the event. 

“People come to connect 

with their Scottish roots – or 

discover them for the first time 

– but what makes our event 

special is how involved you 

can be. You don’t just watch 

the games, you get to be part of 

them.” 

Spectators can cheer 

on world-class athletes in 

the Oceania Heavyweight 

Championship or watch a 

hundred dancers compete in 

New Zealand’s largest one-day 

highland dancing competition. 

More than 20 pipe 

bands will fill the air with 

music, culminating in the 

spine-tingling mass band 

performance. 

“When those bands play 

together, the sound just goes 

right through you,” Driscoll 

said. “It gives you goosebumps 

every time.” 

And it’s not all about 

watching – there will be 

loads of chances to have a go 

yourself. 

“You can try tossing a caber, 

join the kilted mile, or learn to 

play the pipes. Families love 

getting stuck into things like 

archery, watch sheep shearing 

or cuddle an animal in the 

Scottish farmyard, and meeting 

medieval knights. Get a team 

together to compete in the tug 

o’ war or for the kids the junior 

warriors.” 

There will also be more than 

120 market stalls, great food, 

and live entertainment. 

“The games are powered by 

and for our rural community,” 

Driscoll said. 

“Hundreds of volunteers, 

local groups, and businesses 

make it happen — and every 

dollar raised goes back into 

projects that support our 

people.”

"(Canterbury A) don't have 

any games until February so 

that's a bit of a shame.”

Rolleston’s Jack aces awards night 


Being crowned most valued 

female member of a team at 

the Zonta Secondary Schools 

Sports Awards was “surreal” 

for Rolleston College’s Hannah 

Jack. 

The year 13 student received 

the award for services to the 

school’s senior A netball team, 

which she captained and made 

more than 100 appearances for. 

“It was pretty surreal,” she 

said. 

“I didn’t really expect it, to be 

honest. But I’m grateful for the 

opportunity.” 

Jack was one of 13 winners 

across seven categories at last 

week’s awards night, run by 

the Zonta Club of Christchurch 

South and School Sport Canterbury. 

She was the only one from 

a school in Selwyn. 

“Coming from a smaller 

school I thought one of those 

other girls would get it,” the 

18-year-old said. 

“They looked like they were 

definitely competitive, but 

I’m grateful to be considered 

among those talented people.” 

The award capped off a successful 

week for her family 

– brother Liam Jack was part of 

the Canterbury team that lifted 

the NPC trophy last Saturday 

after beating Otago in the final. 

“I’m very proud to be his sister,” 

she said. 

Their father Graham is a former 

Crusaders and Canterbury 

lock, while Graham’s brother 

Chris Jack played 67 tests for

Jack joined Rolleston’s top

year, where Jack, a defender, 

played her 100th game. 

They also competed in the 

premier 1 grade in the Selwyn 

competition, finishing third and 

making the semi-finals. 

“We started in C grade, and 

we've been lucky enough to 

have an awesome coach, Denise 

Keno, who’s helped us grow,” 

Jack said. 

“We’ve moved all the way up 

to A grade in tournaments, and 

SuperNet Reserve in the school 

grades, so it’s a big step up from 

where we started.” 

Jack has played her last game 

for Rolleston and will finish 

school at the end of the year. 

She still wants to be involved in 

netball in the district. 

“I’m joining the air force, so 

my intentions would probably 

be to play in that team, as well 

as the Burnham (club) team. 

“I’d love to play at a high 

level, but I’ll just keep the love 

of the sport alive, just keep 

playing it.” 

Burnham are also coached by 

Keno. 

Jack said she would miss playing 

after she graduates from 

Rolleston College. 

“It was a really cool year this 

year.” 

“Everyone just really enjoyed 

themselves, it was a great team 

environment,” she said.

up for second 

Pro 2000 


Jacob Douglas will stay on for 

another season with Pabst 

Racing in the USF Pro 2000 

Championship in the United 

States. 

In his rookie season this year, 

the 20-year-oldfrom Lincoln 

finished fifth in the championship, 

with eight podium finishes 

and victory at the Indianapolis 

grand prix.

Rural Women NZ: Centennial celebration and re-set

Rural Women NZ is currently 

enjoying a yearlong centennial 

celebration, dubbed RWNZ 

100. Events throughout the 

year highlight 100 years 

of impact, leadership and 

legacy. At the same time as 

honouring the organisation’s 

significant contribution to 

rural and New Zealand life, a 

significant and deliberate re-set 

is also underway, to build the 

organisation for the next 100 

years. 

RWNZ began as the Women’s 

Division of the Farmers’ Union, 

evolved into the Women’s 

Division of Federated Farmers 

in 1946, and in 1999 took the 

identity of Rural Women New 

Zealand, symbolising independence and 

dedication to addressing the diverse 

needs of modern rural women. 

Over the decades, it has set up 

training and nursing schemes, 

purchased a Spitfire to support the war 

effort, protested for Equal Pay, fed the 

Farmy Army volunteers, fundraised 

for earthquake supports by creating 

“Aftersocks”, and lobbied strongly 

on matters such as school bus safety 

and proposed cuts to rural school bus 

“Rural Women” rose, bred for the centennial 

routes, policing and post. 

The organisation was at its height in 

1960 with 30,000 members: one in every 

24 rural New Zealanders. Numbers 

have now dropped to below 2,000, a 

situation the organisation is determined 

to transform. Research and analysis 

have highlighted the need to “show and 

tell” the organisation’s important and 

often behind-the-scenes work. There 

will be a new focus on the opportunities 

to attract women aged 30–49 who 

are community leaders, and 

adapt to audience needs and 

expectations through better 

use of social media and online 

platforms. 

RWNZ celebrates and 

uplifts rural women through 

strengthening, supporting and 

connecting. The fellowship 

opportunities on offer range 

from dinner groups to policy 

and advocacy action groups 

to leadership workshops and 

“The Sharing Shed” webinars. 

It’s also easy to stay connected 

through the Express magazine, 

e-newsletters and social media. 

The ever-strong commitment 

to community includes a 

very wide range of grants, 

scholarships and resources, 

covering everything from 

education to emergency support, to 

help local communities thrive. The 

organisation received $250,000 in 

Budget 2025 to help expand its reach

it does not feel as if this year’s 

winter has been completely 

shaken off. Yet from now until 

late next month is the best time 

for growing plants that will 

mature in autumn. 

Savoy cabbages, broccoli, 

brussels sprouts, silverbeet, 

parsnips, leeks, salsify and 

swedes can be sown for autumn 

and winter use. 

Asparagus beds should be 

starting to bear mature shoots. 

Cut them carefully or the young 

buds below the surface will be 

destroyed. Do not allow any of 

the shoots to grow a top or the 

plant will be finished for the 

season.

sown. Put them 15cm apart 

in double rows, with 20cm 

between rows. When the beans 

come through, stake them with

The general public is to be advised that a 

New Zealand Army Course will be conducted 

in vicinity of Castle Hill and Mistletoe Flat 

campsite area over the period above. 

The exercise will involve up to 35 personnel of 

2/1 Royal New Zealand Infantry Battalion from 

Burnham Military Camp. 

Training will involve soldiers on foot carrying 

weapons, packs, and utilising navigational 

aids moving to different points on the ground. 

Soldiers will use blank ammunition. Soldiers will 

be navigating by night on 19 November this 

will be completed no later than 11:59pm. Vehicles 

will be involved only to transport soldiers 

in and out of training areas. The course will be 

completed by 12:00pm on 22 November.

What’s my house really worth? 

When you’ve lived in a property for 

a while it can be hard to be rational 

about its worth. How can you put a 

price on the spot where you’ve built 

so many memories with family and 

friends? Someone will surely recognise 

the hours you spent sanding back the 

windows or digging out the agapanthus 

in the garden and reward you with a 

high price, won’t they? Unfortunately 

potential buyers may see things 

differently, especially in a slow housing 

market. 

There are several methods you 

can use to gauge the worth of your 

property. Remember that the rateable 

value or RV (formerly known as the 

government valuation, or GV) of your 

property doesn’t really provide any 

clues. These valuations are done by the 

local council to work out what share of 

rates a household should pay. They are 

only done every three years and don’t 

take any improvements into account – 

increasingly, properties that include an 

RV figure in the advertising will come 

with a disclaimer that it is not indicative 

of current market value. 

These days you can gather a lot of 

information for free thanks to websites 

like Trade Me and Homes.co.nz. Trade 

Me’s Property Insights has information 

on more than 1.5 million homes, 

including rateable value data, previous 

sale prices, when the property was built 

and what size it is. The site also provides 

an estimated value range, based on 

a melting pot of data from sales of 

comparable properties, listing details 

and user activity. Homes.co.nz operates 

similarly. Its estimate service is built 

on a complex set of valuation models, 

using around 30 million pieces of data 

bought from councils nationwide, plus 

sales values and a wide set of property 

features. Both sites recognise there are 

a number of factors at play, so they offer 

an estimated value range that can be 

quite broad. 

While both these sites are useful, 

they don’t show the full picture and 

should only be used as the starting 

point in determining value. They can’t 

take the condition of your property into 

account and they may not recognise 

any improvements you might have 

made (though homes.co.nz does allow 

owners to ‘claim’ their property and edit 

information about it). 

Let’s say you own a large property in 

an area where there have been some 

big-ticket sales in the last year. Your 

property might have some serious 

structural issues and be in generally 

poor condition, yet the algorithms 

may claim that it is worth a lot more 

than any sensible buyer would pay 

for it because other houses in the 

neighbourhood have sold for high 

prices. The impact of this is two-fold. 

Firstly, the seller could anticipate a big 

pay-day that may never arrive; and 

secondly, some buyers may be put off 

making an offer because they think it’s 

out of range. 

There are a couple of ways to combat 

this. When you start working with a 

real estate agent to sell your property 

they must supply you with a current 

market appraisal or CMA. This is based 

on similar information to the online 

versions, but it also comes with the 

agent’s real-time, real-life knowledge 

of the area, what similar properties 

have sold for and the condition and 

particular characteristics of your 

own property (such as whether it 

has been repainted recently or it’s in 

a state of disrepair). The agent will 

have had the chance to walk through 

your property and identify its unique 

selling propositions, such as good sun, 

proximity to desirable schools and other 

features that buyers like. It’s important 

to note that you may get varying CMA 

ranges from different real estate agents 

as they may each take a divergent 

perspective on your property that you 

will then need to consider. 

Your other option is to pay a 

registered valuer to provide you with 

an independent valuation. This service 

comes at a cost (the price will vary, 

depending on the level of detail), but 

it will be more accurate. The Property 

Institute, which represents valuers, says 

a registered valuation can help sellers 

be a little more clinical about their 

property’s worth. 

Even with all the information you 

can gather, the true indication of your 

property’s value is what a willing 

buyer will pay for it at the given time 

that it’s on the market. A valuation, a 

price range or a figure reached by an 

algorithm is not cash in the bank.

expired food and double-ups and then 

put them into the containers (labelled). 

Ensure that everything is put into 

appropriate containers and organised 

into categories. For example, have areas 

for baking goods, breakfast goods and 

cooking staples within easy reach and in 

a logical spot. Once it has its “home,” it’s 

easy for everyone to know where to find 

it and where to put it back. 

To keep on top of things, you can 

spend your time and effort elsewhere 

by putting systems and organisations 

in place. There is always the option of 

hiring a professional to make renovating, 

shifting, downsizing or dealing with a 

busy lifestyle much more manageable or 

check out their tips and ideas. 

By getting someone who doesn’t have 

a sentimental attachment, you will also 

discover your “why” for keeping items. 

Once you have a clean, tidy space with 

designated areas for items, you will feel 

calm, have a sense of accomplishment 

and feel less overwhelmed when 

grappling with the rest of the house. You 

also won’t get that urge to hide things 

away when someone pops in for a coffee.

Easier builds for granny 

flats are on their way

Recently, the government passed new 

legislation amending the Building Act, 

making it easier for homeowners to 

construct granny flats or small, selfcontained 

homes in their backyards. 

Under the Building and Construction 

(Small Standalone Dwellings) Bill, 

homeowners will soon be able to build 

standalone dwellings of up to 70 square 

meters without needing full building 

consent. Whether you need more space 

to accommodate aging parents, young 

adults, or even to create a rental unit, 

you will soon have greater affordability 

and choice. 

Removing the consent process, which 

is expected to happen in early 2026, 

will cut red tape, enable much-needed 

housing to be built more quickly, and 

give families more flexibility. 

Under the new exemption, the 

dwelling must still meet the New 

Zealand Building Code, ensuring safety 

and quality standards are upheld. 

It must also be a simple, single-story 

design, built or supervised by a 

licensed building professional (LBP). 

Homeowners will need to notify 

their local council before and after 

construction, but they won’t face the 

costly and time-consuming consent 

process currently required. 

While the legislative change will 

remove one major hassle, it doesn’t 

remove all of them. Local zoning and 

land-use rules will still apply, meaning 

some sites may need resource consent. 

As a homeowner, you might find a 

significant opportunity in the prospect 

of constructing a secondary dwelling 

on your property. It is expected that 

your property value will increase and 

that you will have more flexibility in 

how you use the additional unit. This 

new unit could take the form of a cosy 

guest house for visiting family and 

friends, a modern studio apartment 

generating rental income, or a dedicated 

home office. 

The exemption applies only to granny 

flats that are built after the law change 

takes effect next year. Now is the time to 

start planning the build if you have ever 

dreamed of adding a compact cottage, 

home office, space for extended family, 

a rental property, or a retirement retreat 

to keep your older family members. If 

you have questions about building or 

resource consent requirements, contact 

your local council.
