AIRBAG COIL SPRING FAILS

MORE THAN JUST A TOTAL FAILURE OF THE HORN AND STEERING

Horn, steering wheel buttons, airbag warning message – all of these

can fail if the airbag coil spring fails. It connects the rigid steering

column to the movable steering wheel and transmits not only the

airbag's trigger impulse, but also numerous control signals from the

horn, radio, cruise control and assistance functions.

This is often caused by material fatigue or

mechanical damage to the fine conductive

foil inside – often due to wear and tear,

incorrect installation or sudden stress. If a

conductor track breaks, the electrical connections

between the steering wheel and

the control unit fail – with possible warning

messages appearing on the display.

The consequences: In addition to the

failure of safety-related functions such as

airbag signalling, the horn will also stop

working. Steering wheel buttons no longer

respond. In rare cases, workshops report

noises or annoying scratching sounds when

steering.

Nevertheless: It’s more than just annoying

– in serious cases, it can be life-threatening.

The coil spring is a safety-related component

that plays a role in the airbag deployment

system. As such, if it is faulty, it must be

replaced – not repaired.

VEMO solutions in original equipment

quality – smart, secure and reliable

VEMO offers tailor-made, tested replacement

coil springs with OE quality that are precisely

matched to the model and steering column.

They ensure maximum operational reliability

and make repairs easier for you: no reworking,

no sources of error and no returns.

During installation, ensure that the ignition

is switched off, the steering wheel and

wheels are in the centre position, and the

existing coil spring is completely replaced –

do not reuse it. Be careful not to damage the

fixings and position the retaining elements

precisely.

V10-72-1615

Causes of a faulty

coil spring

These causes are most often responsible

for airbag coil spring failures:

Wear

Constant steering puts mechanical strain

on the coil spring. Over time, the conductor

tracks wear out, making interruptions

inevitable.

Corrosion

Moisture, salt and similar substances

attack the contacts. The result: Poor

conductivity – and in the worst case,

total failure of the airbag.

Vibrations and shocks

Uneven roads and hard knocks put

a strain on the sensitive mechanics.

This can loosen or even destroy the coil

spring.

Assembly errors

Improper installation? Devastating! Even

minor errors during installation can lead

to serious malfunctions.

Extreme temperatures

Hot, cold, hot again: temperature

fluctuations cause plastic parts to age

and can lead to tension or cracks in the

coil spring.

Symptoms of a faulty

coil spring

The symptoms of a faulty coil spring are

not just annoying, they can also be

extremely dangerous – especially if you

ignore them or take them lightly. That’s

why you should watch out for these

warning signs:

Is the airbag warning light permanently

on?

This is no coincidence, as it could mean

that the airbag will not deploy in an

emergency.

Signal horn not working?

It sounds harmless, but it is often a clear

sign of a problem in the slip ring.

Total failure at the wheel?

If the steering wheel buttons, paddle

shifters or cruise control no longer

respond, this is usually due to a loss of

signal caused by a faulty coil spring.

Cracking noises when steering?

Such mechanical noises may indicate

internal damage to the coil spring.

Does the steering wheel feel stiff

or uneven?

In some cases, a damaged coil spring can

also affect steering feel. This should not

be taken lightly.

With the VEMO coil spring, you are not only

offering your customers a spare part, but

also a measure of safety. A sustainable

solution you can really rely on.

HEAVY

UNDER LOAD

WHY ELECTRIC CARS PLACE HIGH DEMANDS ON SUSPENSION

Anyone who works on electric vehicles quickly notices that the chassis components are

subject to completely different stresses than those affecting a conventional combustion

engine. This is particularly evident in the suspension – not only does it carry more weight,

but it also has to cope with completely different force profiles.

The biggest issue is the high vehicle weight.

In most models, the battery is located in the

underbody and adds several hundred kilograms

of weight – permanently. This means

that shock absorbers, springs, strut bearings

and suspension components have to

support significantly more mass, resulting in

greater wear and tear and increased material

stress. A classic case for preventive maintenance

– and high-quality components.

Added to this is the change in weight

distribution. The flat battery base and the

new axle load distribution result in completely

different requirements for the front

and rear axles. The spring and shock

absorption characteristics must be precisely

matched to the model – otherwise, not only

will driving comfort suffer, but also durability.

An additional stress factor is the directly

adjacent torque. While a combustion engine

only develops its power as the revs increase,

electric vehicles deliver their full power right

from the start. These forces place enormous

strain on the wheel suspension and suspension,

especially when starting or accelerating

– particularly in heavy SUVs or sporty

models with four-wheel drive.

The situation also changes when braking:

Recuperation ensures that deceleration is

achieved via the electric motor rather than the

brake system. This has a direct effect on the

chassis – partly jerky, partly asymmetrical.

The load on bearings, shock absorbers and

axle guides increases further.

One thing is clear: the chassis of electric

cars operate under significantly harsher conditions

than we are used to seeing. Greater

weight, altered dynamics and aggressive

load changes demand precise tuning and

particularly durable components. That’s why

you mustn’t compromise on shock absorbers,

air suspension or bearings – and when it

comes to spare parts, it is best to rely on the

tested quality of VEMO and VAICO.

Recommendations for

workshop practice

When servicing the chassis of electric

vehicles, it is particularly important to

bear the following points in mind to

ensure long-term safety and functionality:

• Manufacturer's specifications

must be strictly observed

• Only use tested quality parts

(e.g. VAICO/VEMO)

• Always include wheel

alignment and calibration in

your planning

• High-voltage work may only

be carried out by trained staff

• Tightening torques must be

strictly adhered to

What you absolutely must remember when servicing the

chassis of electric vehicles

High-voltage safety is the top priority

Before working on the chassis, always:

• Disconnect vehicle from its power supply

• Perform high-voltage clearance (especially when working near the battery tunnel or on

landing gear)

• Only trained personnel (e.g. Level 2S) may work on HV-sensitive areas.

Without training, there is a risk of death and legal liability!

Wheel alignment is mandatory after every service

• After replacing springs, shock absorbers or bearings, precise wheel alignment with

calibration is mandatory

• Especially for vehicles with lane departure warning or steering assist systems: Without correct

calibration, there is a risk of malfunctions, false warnings and inaccurate driving behaviour

Don’t forget sensors and chassis control

Many electric vehicles have electronic level sensors and damping control

(often linked to recuperation management)

Once replaced: Check sensors for proper functioning and calibrate if necessary!

CONSEQUENCES OF ERRORS:

• Height deviations (esp. for air suspension)

• Error messages in the instrument cluster

• Unstable or unbalanced handling

3

5

6

2

4

Correct installation: Torque values, sequence, quality

ALWAYS:

• Adhere to manufacturer torque specifications

• Carry out the assembly in the specified order

COMMON MISTAKES CAUSED BY INCORRECT TIGHTENING:

• Creaking noises

• Material tension

• Component failure or premature wear

Always work in eights – no half measures

Always replace safety-related parts such as springs, shock absorbers or wishbones in pairs

on one axle. This way, you’ll avoid:

• Uneven suspension travel

• Tilting

• Tight bearings, uneven tyre wear

TIME BOMB?

TIMING BELT IN OIL BATH ON THE FORD 1.0 ECOBOOST

The oil-lubricated timing belt in Ford's 1.0

EcoBoost engine was considered innovative

when it was introduced: more durable,

quieter and more efficient. In practice,

however, the opposite is true. Many

workshops report premature wear, rubber

particles in the oil circuit and, in the worst

case, major engine damage.

The cause is the chemical reaction of modern

oil additives with the rubber compound

of the belt.

MORE ABOUT

BELT DRIVES

AND CO.

The result: Material fatigue, loose particles,

clogged oil channels and damaged pumps.

Excessively long replacement intervals are

particularly critical – damage often occurs

after just 80,000 kilometres. Symptoms

such as loss of performance or warning

lights are easily overlooked, leaving workshops

faced with time-consuming fault analysis

and disgruntled customers.

The solution: The VAICO timing belt kit

The specially developed VAICO timing belt

kit for 1.0 EcoBoost engines is resistant to

aggressive oil additives and significantly

more durable than many original parts. As

an EXPERT KIT+, it comes complete with

timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, seals

and – depending on the application – all

screw types.

All parts are manufactured to OE quality and

optimally matched to each other – for safe,

efficient repairs.

Prevention rather than engine failure

Instead of relying on manufacturer

specifications of 180,000 to 240,000

kilometres, many workshops recommend

replacing the timing belt as early as

80,000 kilometres.

Preventive repairs are particularly worthwhile

for frequently used vehicles such as

the Fiesta, Focus or Transit Courier: They

protect the engine and oil circuit – and save

workshops from unnecessary complaints

and costly returns.

With the VAICO timing belt kit, workshops

guarantee the right solution for sustainable

repairs and satisfied customers.

VAICO timing belt kits: Quality that protects

VAICO stands for OE-compliant repair solutions that you can feel in the workshop – and

recommend to your customers with a clear conscience. Our timing belt kits are precisely

tailored to the specific requirements of oil-lubricated systems.

Durability thanks to oil-resistant material

The specially developed rubber compound is permanently resistant to modern engine oil

additives – and provides reliable protection against premature belt ageing, which often

occurs with first-generation OE parts.

EXPERT KITS+: Everything in one box

The set includes: timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, seals and, depending on the

model, water pump, screws and even the appropriate oil. Perfectly matched for safe,

time-saving repairs without any nasty surprises.

Early replacement instead of costly consequential damage

Do not rely on long replacement intervals – preventive replacement with VAICO provides

reliable protection against major engine damage caused by worn BIO belts.

Less abrasion, more protection

Our material mix minimises abrasion in the oil bath, thereby reducing contamination,

blockages and oil pump wear – for maximum service life and a clean oil circuit.

WHEN SAFETY GOES

INTO A SPIN

FAULTY ACCELERATION SENSORS: A SAFETY RISK

A vehicle suddenly becomes unstable when taking a bend, the ESP does not intervene –

the ABS/ESP warning light illuminates in the cockpit. Sound familiar? In the workshop, it

quickly becomes clear that the fault lies in the driving dynamics system, or more precisely

in the longitudinal or lateral acceleration sensors.

These small but crucial vehicle sensors provide the data basis for systems such as ESP,

ABS and traction control. If a sensor fails, a routine journey becomes an incalculable

safety risk.

Modern vehicles feature numerous

assistance systems that work unnoticed in

the background to ensure safety and

stability. In order for these systems – in

particular the Electronic Stability

Programme (ESP) – to function correctly,

they rely on accurate information. One of the

most important sources of data here is the

acceleration sensors. They detect how the

vehicle is moving in the longitudinal and

lateral directions and transmit this

information to the control unit in real time. If

there are disruptions or faulty signals, this

has an immediate impact on driving

behaviour – as well as safety.

A faulty accelerometer is often not

immediately apparent. The ESP or ABS light

in the cockpit may occasionally illuminate,

and the vehicle may react unusually or

unsteadily when taking a bend or braking.

The symptoms are diffuse and cannot

always be directly attributed to a specific

component, which makes it difficult to

diagnose the fault. Often, the sensor does

not fail completely immediately, but instead

provides inaccurate or sporadically

intermittent values over a longer period of

time. Particularly in the case of electronic

stability programmes, which react with

millisecond precision, this is enough to

delay or prevent intervention in an

emergency.

The technology – what do longitudinal

and lateral acceleration sensors do?

These acceleration sensors detect the vehicle’s movements along two axes:

Longitudinal axis (acceleration/braking behaviour)

Transverse axis (cornering/drifting)

The measurement data is transmitted to the control unit in real time and is essential

for the proper functioning of the electronic stability control (ESC), ABS, traction control

and other driver assistance systems. They ensure that the vehicle is stable and

safe even in critical moments.

The causes of faulty sensors are manifold.

In addition to age-related wear and tear,

external influences such as extreme

temperature fluctuations, vibrations,

moisture, or corrosion also play a role.

Solder joints can break, housings can be

damaged, circuit boards can crack – and

suddenly functionality is impaired.

As a workshop, you should specifically

include the acceleration sensors in the

diagnosis if the corresponding symptoms or

warning messages occur. Modern testing

equipment usually provides clear indications

as to which sensor is affected – often

a distinction must be made between

transverse and longitudinal acceleration

sensors. Once replaced, many vehicle

models require precise calibration in order to

communicate the new reference values to the

ESP system. If this step is skipped, the

system may continue to operate using

incorrect data.

When it comes to spare parts, focus on

quality, especially for sensitive components

such as acceleration sensors. VEMO offers

AI INSTEAD OF KILOMETRES

HOW PIRELLI USES VIRTUAL TEST TRACKS

Tyres are high-tech products – and their

development is no longer pure workshop

work. With its Virtual Development Centre

(VDC) in Breuberg, Pirelli is focusing on

digital twins, simulations and artificial

intelligence. The aim is to develop tyres

faster, more precisely and more sustainably.

Digital twins instead of endless prototypes

The VDC not only simulates tyres, but also

entire vehicle models. On this basis, driving situations

can be realistically simulated – long

before a physical prototype is built. The simulator

recreates laser-measured routes, authentic

driving dynamics and even steering forces and

sound.

The advantage for vehicle manufacturers and

workshops: tyres are optimally tailored to the

respective model at an early stage of development.

This precision is particularly crucial for

electric vehicles, which place special demands

on load capacity, torque and rolling resistance.

AI makes the difference

Artificial intelligence is now in daily use and

around the clock. The possibilities of neural

networks are showing ever greater potential

when it comes to evaluating huge amounts of

data. This allows reliable predictions to be

made about how a tyre will behave in a wide

WHY THE CORRECT TYRE PRESSURE IS SO CRUCIAL

CHRISTIAN GRIMM

Racing driver & driving instructor

VEMO Porsche driver Christian Grimm on

the inconspicuous but crucial detail in the

GT3: Tyre pressure.

Christian, why does everyone in GT3

KLEINMOTOREN 1. constantly talk about tyre pressure?

SMALL-POWER MOTORS

Because it determines everything. If the

15601 | 23001 | 23002 | 27101

pressure isn’t right, you lose grip – and

without grip, you can’t do fast laps. Too high

or too low also means that the car becomes

unstable. So, it’s not just about speed, it’s

also about safety.

SENSOREN

SENSORS

11604 | 21502 | 23902

What distinguishes your racing tyres

2. from our road tyres?

A GT3 tyre is constructed differently

from the ground up. It has a much softer

rubber compound that reaches operating

temperature extremely quickly, delivering

maximum grip – but it doesn’t last nearly

as long as a road tyre. The carcass is also

stiffer so that the tyre can withstand

enormous lateral and longitudinal

forces on the race track. Tyre pressure

is completely different, too: We let air

out before driving because the tyre heats

up significantly during use and the

pressure automatically increases.

A road tyre never gets that hot in everyday

use, so its pressure remains relatively

constant.

How does incorrect pressure manifest

itself? 3.

The temperature determines the grip. If the

tyre is overloaded, it starts to ‘grain’ – i.e.

peel. This causes rubber fragments to form,

which impair the contact surface. The result:

less grip and slower lap times.

ABGASRÜCKFÜHRUNG

EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION

4.

11801

How do you ensure that the

pressure is correct?

Before every journey, we measure when

cold, adjust and observe how the pressure

rises as the temperature increases. After a

few laps, the optimum window is reached –

and from then on, the tyre works perfectly.

LUFTFEDERUNG

AIR SUSPENSION

5.

19401 | 19402 | 19403

And what do the regulations

say about this?

There are fixed minimum pressures that

must be maintained. This protects both the

tyre and the driver. However, you have to

react at lightning speed when the weather

changes: a rain tyre on a dry track or a slick

tyre in the rain – neither is acceptable.

Quality brand of VIEROL AG · Germany

Your personal tip?

6. Ultimately, the tyre is the only

component that makes contact with the

road – whether that’s in a GT3 racing car or

an everyday car. Keeping an eye on your tyre

pressure makes driving safer, protects your

equipment and gets more out of your

vehicle. In racing, a few tenths more or less

can mean the difference between victory

and defeat – and in road traffic, the

difference between control and risk.

4MATIC &

7G‐TRONIC

JENS REIMERS

Product Manager

HOW TO AVOID A COSTLY GEARBOX FAILURE

In many Mercedes 4MATIC models with 7-speed automatic transmission (7G-Tronic or

7G-Tronic Plus), damage to the transfer gearbox between the drive shaft and front axle

differential often results in total economic loss. For cost reasons or due to missing parts,

Mercedes-Benz only replaces the entire gearbox, which involves extremely high costs and

long workshop times.

A common scenario: The rubber sleeve on

the drive shaft tears, allowing water or road

salt to penetrate and cause corrosion. Over

time, play develops in the joint and the

cardan shaft hits against the gearbox, which

is accompanied by knocking noises. Without

intervention, there is ultimately a risk of

cardan shaft breakage or bearing damage.

Worn bearings inside can also damage

gear plates, rendering the entire gearbox

unusable.

Your solution: the VAICO EXPERT KIT+

VAICO has developed an economical

alternative for this vehicle configuration.

The VAICO EXPERT KIT+ for targeted repair

of the transfer gearbox in 7G-Tronic &

4MATIC. Instead of installing a complete

replacement gearbox, you only replace the

necessary components, thereby saving

a lot of money.

The kit has a modular design. You can

choose between the complete kit including

shaft and the BEK version ‘without shaft’ if

only the bearings are affected. All parts are

AI MEETS THE WORKSHOP:

PREMIÈRE FOR THE VIEROL MOBILITY TALK

How is artificial intelligence changing

everyday life in the workshop? This

question formed the focus of the première

for the new VIEROL MOBILITY TALK format,

which took place in mid-August at the

VIEROL ACADEMY in Rastede. The aim is to

promote exchange between workshops,

associations, educational institutions, trade

press, technology experts and VIEROL, and

to discuss future topics together.

Numerous representatives from regional

automotive guilds, training centres,

workshops and trade media attended the

première. For three hours, there was an

intensive discussion about the opportunities

and challenges presented by the use of AI in

everyday life.

A key topic was the EXPERT KIT FINDER:

This tool makes parts identification faster

and more precise. For workshops, this

means fewer incorrect deliveries, significant

time savings and always the right EXPERT

KITS+ from VEMO, VAICO and ACKOJA – a

clear contribution to process optimisation.

Education meets AI –

securing tomorrow’s skilled workers

The role of AI in education and training was

also a focus. Digital learning platforms

adapt to the learner’s pace and make it

easier to get started with complex topics.

AI-supported tools such as the EXPERT KIT

FINDER show trainees in practical terms how

to quickly find the right spare part. This

reduces errors, provides security and

increases the attractiveness of the profession.

VIEROL demonstrates that training is crucial:

For over 25 years, we have been training

young people in commercial and technical

professions, thereby securing skilled

workers for tomorrow – a contribution to the

future viability of the entire industry.

The first VIEROL MOBILITY TALK showed

that AI is no longer a topic for the future,

but is already creating real added value in

workshops today. The event marked

a successful start and is set to become

a permanent fixture at the VIEROL

ACADEMY in future.

STAY COOL,

PERFORM WELL –

LIKE ANTIFREEZE FOR

THE TEAM

In an interview with VIEROL, the two national players Luisa and

Carina talked about how they got into ice hockey – and why the

sport is so special to them. While Luisa picked up a racket more or

less by chance during a holiday in Heidelberg, Carina was determined

to wear the ‘cool kit’ even as a child – and has never taken it

off since.

Both emphasise that fun and team spirit are the basis. “We don’t

have lone wolves here – everyone fights for each other,” says

Carina. Luisa adds: “We just enjoy spending time together – on and

off the ice. You can feel it.”

A shared moment that gave us goosebumps: successfully qualifying

for the Olympics. “A dream we’ve had for years,” says Carina. “When

that decisive goal was scored, a huge weight was lifted.”

The role of sponsors was also discussed. Support from companies

such as VIEROL is "”worth its weight in gold,” emphasises

Luisa – precisely because many clubs would struggle to survive

without this assistance.

The Olympics are clearly the focus for the future. Both want not only

to participate, but also to “make an impact”. At the same time, they

have a message for young girls: ice hockey is a challenging but

incredibly rewarding sport – with highs, lows and lots of fun.

EIGHT QUESTIONS FOR

FRANZIMAUTO

ABOUT RUSTED LOVE, HONEST CARS AND

THE SMELL OF PETROL.

He is a presenter on the radio station

UNSERDING, has over 121,000 followers on

Instagram and spends every spare minute in

his garage – preferably with his

youngtimers: Mercedes W124, BMW E34 and

anything else that has character.

Franz Johann, better known by his handle

‘@franzimauto’, is all about attention to

detail, honest mechanics and a great deal of

passion for cars. Whether it’s a spare part, a

home-made solution or an improvised fix –

the main thing is that it works and remains

authentic.

We asked Franz eight questions – about his

favourite cars, oil-smeared moments spent

tinkering with engines, and the little

successes that you don’t find in the

showroom, but only under the car.

Powered by 34 | 35

VDRIVE: Franz, you host a morning show in

the morning and then you’re under the car in

the evening – what gives you more energy:

a microphone or a spanner?

This oldie has more character than a slice of

cheesecake wrapped in aluminium foil at a motorway

service station, but it drives like a sack of screws, is

always broken down – and yet it’s still a great car!

Franz: Actually, they complement each other

perfectly. Working in radio robs me of all my

mental energy, and the best way for me to

recharge my creative batteries is actually

with a spanner under the car. Doing such

hard, physical labour is the best way for me

to clear my head and recharge my batteries.

On the other hand, it’s not always easy when

you’re standing in the pit for what feels like

an eternity and having to do work above your

head. It’s also quite nice not to have to do

physical work on the radio.

VDRIVE: What is your definition of a ‘good

car’ – technology, character, condition or

simply gut feeling?

Franz: All FOUR! My Land Rover, for example,

is a really bad car, but it’s such a good car,

too! That makes sense, doesn’t it? This oldie

has more character than a slice of cheesecake

wrapped in aluminium foil at a motorway

service station, but it drives like a sack

of screws, is always broken down – and yet

it’s still a great car! I think character is the

most important thing about a car for me. And

if the technology is good, too – jackpot! Of

course, we cannot completely ignore what’s

going on at the moment. We are all engaged in

a relentless battle against pitting. And the

fewer crumbs there are under the car, the better.

But ultimately, everything can be

repaired. And those who are really passionate

about their cars will invest disproportionate

amounts of money in them. I must also clarify

one thing: I am only talking about young

classics and classic cars. Of course, there

are also some really good new cars. Cars that

drive superbly, are incredibly comfortable or

consume little fuel – but very few of them

have managed to retain the character of their

predecessors. Most of them are plastic

bombers “Made in China” and barely a means

of transport. My mate Manuel Huber once

said: “In the past, the journey was the destination,

but today, only the destination is the

destination.” Amen! Driving is so expensive, I

want to at least enjoy it!

VDRIVE: Your love for young timers such as

the W124 or E34 is immediately apparent –

what fascinates you about these particular

models?

Franz: These two cars are already incredibly

exciting. Both built in 1989, both roughly the

same size, both with similar price tags – and

both as different as two cars could possibly

be.

Let’s talk about my W124 230E first. Young

people are always asking me: “I want to buy

an old car too. What would you recommend?”

And my answer is always: “A 124 or 190, if the

garage is a bit tight.” My 124 was a panic buy.

I successfully drove my ‘77 Landy as my daily

driver for an entire season, but when it

started having engine problems, it was clear

that I needed to find a cheap winter car! For

days and weeks, my brother-in-law and I

leafed through the curious maze of classified

ads, battling our way through the thicket of

private listings, only to finally find a (far too

good) 124 in the Eifel region, which we took

home with us on the spot for three banknotes.

I’ve had it for almost two years now,

and it’s the most reliable daily driver I’ve ever

had!

After 36 years, the car is still as elegant and

majestic as ever. I’m travelling across Germany

in my ‘pensioner rocket’, and it’s every

bit as comfortable as you’d expect. And 1,000

km on a single tank of fuel – by then, the

electric car driver is already looking for their

third charging station.

The E34, on the other hand, is the complete

opposite! Okay, a little disclaimer: the car has

already been modified for racing, making it

harder, louder, faster and more aggressive

than the standard 525i. And yet: BMW builds

cars that are significantly sportier. While the

W124 glides majestically along the bends of

the country road, the E34 devours them like a

local football team devours currywurst at a

high street stall. Despite the size and weight

of the 5 Series, it drives much more sportily

and feels very modern in terms of handling.

I also love old saloon cars – guilty. And let’s

be honest: the E34 is the most beautiful car

in the E series. Now there’s an outcry among

E30 fans, but in my opinion, the E34 looks

much more aggressive, and the rear lights in

particular are more attractive and more in

keeping with BMW.

Continued on the next page.

VDRIVE

02 ||| 2025

Much ado about nothing: both the W124 and

E34 are cars with real character and could be

siblings. Siblings who are completely

different, bicker every ten minutes and are

not allowed to sit next to each other at

dinner. I just love them!

VDRIVE: What has been your biggest

mechanical mishap so far – and what did

you learn from it (apart from new swear

words)?

Franz: Touch wood: I haven’t had any really

serious mishaps when working on cars yet.

But that’s not because I’m such a good

handyman, it’s solely because I always do

difficult things with friends – and they have

an incredible amount of knowledge about

what they’re doing. None of my cars have had

any particularly tricky repairs so far either

(but let’s wait and see how things turn out

with the single throttle on the BMW).

Franz: I always find it strange when people

insist on ‘ORIGINAL’ when it comes to classic

cars. Many things were already great when

the car was invented back then – no question

about it – but it stands to reason that today

we can build some parts better than was possible

back then. Manufacturing processes

have changed and new materials have

entered the market. It goes without saying

that this has also led to improvements in

spare parts (with some exceptions). That’s

why I often opt for aftermarket parts, and so

far it’s worked out well for me!

VDRIVE: You reach over 116,000 people with

your car posts – can you explain why the

topic of “old cars” is inspiring so many

people?

Franz: It’s wonderful to see so many young

people suddenly developing an interest in tin

dinosaurs again. Time and again, people in

my DMs as me which classic car I would

recommend and which would be particularly

suitable as a first car after getting your

driving licence. I would like to give

everyone a hug!

New cars are increasingly merging into a bland

soup of equally boring-looking plastic bombers with

forced touchscreen marriages.

That said, I always end up forgetting

something. My memory could be an air filter

– there are so many little holes in it. And it’s

always only when I’ve finished putting

everything together that I realise I’ve

forgotten to include a part, and that’s when I

start dismantling.

VDRIVE: When it comes to replacements, do

you prefer used parts, original parts or

high-quality aftermarket parts such as those

from VEMO or VAICO? What has proven

most effective for you in practice?

An Old BMW, a cold garage and passion –

Franz and his E34.

Between his toolbox and spanner,

Franz embodies what true car love is all

about: oil, patience and a passion for old

bangers.

Powered by 36 | 37

I think there are quite a few reasons for this

trend. On the one hand, it’s because new cars

are virtually unaffordable. It’s unlikely that

anyone who has already paid over €2,000 for

their driving licence will have the money to go

out and buy a new BMW 1 Series unless they

have rich parents. Even lease returns and

year-old cars have price tags that should

really come with a side of therapy. Of course,

a young classic or classic car in the low

thousands is a bargain in comparison.

The character of old cars also impresses

many young people. New cars are

increasingly merging into a bland soup of

equally boring-looking plastic bombers with

forced touchscreen marriages. Many young

people remember old classics from their

childhood. Granddad picked us up from

nursery in his old Kadett C. Fortunately, a

connection to real cars was established at an

early age.

And what I also believe is a real reason: it’s

the new en-vogue hobby! While some people

are still baking banana bread or growing new

plants from avocado pits, which return to the

eternal vegan realm after two weeks on the

windowsill, there are many young people who

are taking an interest in craft hobbies. Which

cars are best to work on? If I can tinker with

vintage cars, then anyone can!

VDRIVE: If you could only drive one car for

the rest of your life, which one would it be

and why?

Franz: That sounds like a terrible idea. I

never want to lose the luxury of being able to

change cars every now and then. I look forward

to getting into my car every single time.

But well, if I have to choose: then I would be

the Benz! If it were a 500E, I would have absolutely

no problem driving it every day. It’s

comfy, sporty, timelessly beautiful – this car

is simply perfect!

VDRIVE: What would you say to someone

who thinks, “What an old car?” Far too much

work, I’m better off going for something new

with a warranty!

Franz: Yes, well, they’re just missing the

point. There are people out there who think

that a Margherita pizza is a good choice if

you can put spicy salami on the dough. I

enjoy driving a new car every now and then

and am often impressed by what some car

manufacturers are now capable of achieving.

But I didn’t want to own one. The fewer

features and things that can break, the

better. And even if a car has a warranty,

having to go to the authorised repair shop for

every little thing is as enjoyable as having a

stone in your shoe.

My girlfriend drives a more modern car than I

do and always says, “There’s never anything

wrong with your cars.” And my answer is

always: “There’s always something wrong

with every one of my cars!” Most of the

time, though, I know exactly what it is,

and I look forward to repairing the old

car with classic rock blaring from my

speakers and a cold beer in my

hand until the next defect rears its

head. It’s all a matter of attitude!

VDRIVE: Thank you very much,

Franz! For your time, your stories,

your humour – and for the

passion you share with us and

so many others when it comes

to cars. Whether under the car,

behind the microphone or in

front of the camera: please

stay exactly as you are – honest,

tinkering and with a big

heart for old bangers.

a go-kart at the age of eleven. A year later,

and he competed in his first races at the

ADAC Youngster Cup. With successes in

karting – including the championship title

in the Rotax DD2 class in 2016 – he paved

his way into professional GT racing. After a

successful test with Porsche, he made his

début at the one-make cup in 2019 and

impressed in 2020 at the ADAC GT4

Germany and at the 24-hour race at the

Nürburgring (2nd place in the SP10 class).

2021 saw his GT3 début at the 24-hour race

in Sebring. In the years that followed, he

achieved further successes in the GT World

Challenge Europe and the Nürburgring

Endurance Series. Dennis has been

competing in the ADAC GT Masters since

2024 and is setting his sights on the DTM

using the Road to DTM programme.

INTERVIEW WITH DENNIS FETZER

RACING DRIVER,

MECHANIC,

TAXI DRIVER –

ALL THAT’S MISSING IS THE INTERCHANGEABLE NUMBER PLATE

With 24 hours of flat-out racing on the Nordschleife, strong performances in the ADAC GT

Masters and the Ford Mustang GT3 behind him, Dennis Fetzer is no longer an unknown

quantity on the GT scene. In 2025, he will take on the next big hurdle as part of the

‘Road to DTM’ programme – and will be accompanied by VAICO, among others.

Born in Hesse, he not only has a knack for driving, but also for honest craftsmanship:

his family business has been using VAICO products for years. Whether as a driver in the

VAICO Porsche at the Track Experience or as a GT driver in fierce competition –

Dennis loves what he does. In the interview, he talks to us about pressure to perform,

team spirit, steep learning curves and why the right partners on and off the track make

all the difference.

VDRIVE: Dennis, you are part victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, which

of the "Road to DTM"

for me is the best race on the planet.

programme in 2025 and Partnerships such as this one with such

will be driving the new Ford Mustang GT3. a company and their presence in motorsport

With VAICO as a strong partner at your side, are excellent.

what does this combination mean for your

personal career development?

VDRIVE: As a long-standing GT driver with

successes in the ADAC GT Masters and

Dennis: First of all, I need to say that

endurance races, what particularly appeals

none of this would be possible without such to you about the ADAC GT Masters and how

strong partners as VAICO at our side.

does the preparation differ from previous

These are absolutely the best conditions for series?

advancing in this sport. The first half of the

season is already over, and it has not been as Dennis: The ADAC GT Masters is particularly

successful as we had hoped in the ADAC GT interesting to me because of its format, with

Masters. However, we were able to achieve a races usually lasting one hour, and the overall

very good fourth place overall and class schedule. Most of the events take place in

conjunction with the DTM and on the best

tracks. This fantastic package is always

a magnet for fans. What I enjoy most is when

you start the race as the second driver on

race day, and you haven’t driven a single

metre before the driver change so you’re

literally thrown in at the deep end. It’s an

exciting challenge to go straight from

0 to 100.

VDRIVE: You’ll be stepping onto the DTM

stage with VAICO as your official partner.

What role do sponsors such as VAICO play

in your everyday life as a professional –

both on and off the track?

Dennis: Another distinctive feature of this

partnership is the company's overall image

and presence. You see countless VAICO/

VIEROL banners along every route, which

naturally makes you particularly proud to

compete for the company and represent

it as an athlete.

I should also mention that at our company,

which has now been going for 95 years,

we have been relying on VAICO and

VIEROL products for many years, and I am

therefore in daily contact with the products.

VDRIVE: The DTM environment is

considered extremely competitive

– with its proximity to the

factory, TV presence and intense fan

loyalty. How does this additional pressure

motivate you – and what expectations do

you have of yourself for this new challenge?

Dennis: Fortunately, I’m now quite good at

blocking out external influences. But it took

a long time to learn these things. In the past,

interviews would have driven me absolutely

mad. Today, I’m appearing for five minutes on

the live broadcast of the 24-hour race, and

I’m delighted to see smiles on people’s faces

time and time again. I don’t pretend to be

someone I’m not, especially for the media. I

am always myself and I think it’s important to

be authentic.

VDRIVE: In 2024, you were already able to

deliver strong performances in the ADAC GT

Masters with the Haupt Racing Team How

did this experience prepare you for your

possible entry into the DTM – both in terms

of driving and mentally?

Dennis: The successful guest start with

Hubert Haupt was a test to see whether it

would work in sprint format as well as on the

Nordschleife in GT3. This test has made us

feel positive about taking this path.

VDRIVE: You are familiar with both sprint

and long-distance formats. Both the ADAC

GT Masters and the DTM combine sprint

racing with strategic depth. Which skills

from your previous career are particularly

helpful here?

Dennis: From long-distance running in

general, the ability to concentrate and adapt

quickly to the prevailing circumstances.

Also the direct retrieval of services. I find it

easy to get into the racing car and give it my

all. In some cases, it also helps to adopt a

more cautious driving style from the long

distance, as a race is not decided in the first

lap.

VDRIVE: In addition to your racing

commitments, you also drive for guests in the

VAICO Porsche. How do you feel when you

get to pass on that racing feeling to them –

and what makes this role special for you

personally?

Dennis: Personally, I love campaigns like

this. You have the opportunity to share your

passion with a guest in a completely different

way. When you see that your passenger is just

as enthusiastic as you are, the joy is even

greater. I myself am always amazed at how

great cars can drive, especially when you’re

pushing them to their limits. Being able to

share this enthusiasm on a 1:1 basis is

simply incredible. A great opportunity to be

right in the thick of things, rather than just

watching from the sidelines.

VDRIVE:We would like to thank you, Dennis,

for your honest insights and for giving us the

chance to take a look behind the visor.

Whether you’re in GT3, with VAICO Porsche

or on the way to DTM: we are delighted to

have you as a strong partner

at our side and wish you

continued success, speed

and safe laps!

the quality brands VEMO, VAICO and

services and expertise to workshops.

“We are bringing together two strong players

in the automotive aftermarket and providing

workshops in the network with a high level

of service and individual support so that

they can profitably exploit opportunities in

the maintenance business. These include

gearbox servicing and positioning in the

field of electromobility,” explains Ulf

Koschig, Deputy Chairman of the Board at

“VIEROL impressed us with its

well-thought-out concept for

supporting our workshops.”

VIEROL AG.

MOTOO is also delighted. “VIEROL

impressed us with its well-thought-out

concept for supporting our workshops. With

our strong product range, we can bundle as

many product areas as possible at our

partner companies, benefit from the

technology transfer of the VIEROL

ACADEMY and consolidate our position in

the workshop market with our range of

services,” says Jan Knoll, Managing Director

of MOTOO eG.

The cooperation is long-term and aims to

strengthen the competitiveness of the

affiliated companies. Close cooperation

should also generate practical ideas for the

further development of VIEROL’s range of

products and services. “Germany is a very

important market for us, and strengthening

independent workshops is of strategic

importance,” adds Ibrahim Chahrour, Head of

Marketing & Innovation Management at

VIEROL AG. “With a comprehensive allround

package, our experts support

workshop partners in actively developing

their market with marketing support, training

and a range of services.”

The partnership’s official launch took place

at the Nürburgring. The DTM race provided

the perfect backdrop to symbolically put the

collaboration in pole position.
